Why to study at ntu singapore, about phd at ntu singapore , admission requirements to study phd at ntu singapore , intakes to study phd at ntu singapore , application process, popular scholarships, career scope.

Here are some of the reasons why to study at NTU, Singapore:

  • Programs and Schools: NTU offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines. The university organizes several schools, including the Nanyang Business School, School of Computer Science and Engineering, College of Engineering, and College of Science, among others.
  • Research Excellence: NTU has earned recognition for its research contributions and has established research centres focusing on areas such as sustainability, advanced materials, and artificial intelligence . The university actively engages in collaborative research projects with global partners.

  • Student Life: NTU provides a vibrant campus life with a variety of student organizations, clubs, and activities. The university places importance on holistic development and offers opportunities for students to engage in sports, arts, and cultural activities.
  • Global Recognition: NTU consistently ranks among the top universities globally in various university rankings. It has gained recognition for its commitment to excellence in education, research, and innovation.
  • The NTU PhD program has a duration of four years. Starting from the Academic Year 2020, Semester 1 intake onward, the university mandates that students fulfil 18 Academic Units (AUs) of classes throughout their PhD journey, equivalent to approximately six courses.
  • Following a qualifying examination in the third semester, students concentrate on their doctoral project, collaborating closely with a faculty advisor.
  • Those holding a Master’s degree in related fields have the option to request course exemption for up to one course (3 AUs) based on similar courses completed during their MSc studies at their respective universities.

Individuals considering the possibility of being a suitable fit for the program should take their initial step by familiarizing themselves with the ongoing research at the institution. Prospective applicants should peruse the faculty research webpages and identify faculty members whose research interests align with their own.

The first stage of the application process includes reaching out to potential faculty mentors to learn more about their research programs and to assess potential compatibility. Once a potential faculty mentor is identified, applicants can collaborate with them, along with the graduate services officer, to complete and submit their application.

Here is the application process in detail:

  • The minimum admission requirement is a Bachelor’s degree with 2nd Class Honors Upper (or an equivalent, e.g., CGPA >3.2). The degree does not necessarily have to be in Geo Science/Earth Science, and a Master’s degree is not a prerequisite for pursuing a PhD.
  • All applicants are obligated to submit their GRE test scores for the general test (GATE is accepted instead of GRE for applicants from India) in support of their applications. The test dates must fall within 5 years or less from the date of the application. Selected applicants may, in certain cases, be allowed to take the Technical Proficiency Test (TPT) instead of the GRE.
  • International applicants, for whom English is not their first language, must submit their TOEFL/IELTS test scores. The test dates must be within 2 years or less from the application date. Selected applicants may be permitted to take NTU’s English Proficiency Test (EPT) instead of TOEFL/IELTS.
  • The program considers only full-time candidates, and students are expected to complete it within 5 years. Extensions of up to 2 years may be granted in special circumstances, pending the recommendation of the Academic Committee and the approval of the Division Head.

The program has two intakes of graduate students each year, in January and August. The application deadline is January 31st for the August intake and July 31st for the following January intake. All applications must be submitted through the online system of the Office of Admission.

Applicants should select “Asian School of the Environment: Programme code [221] Doctor of Philosophy (ASoE)” under Program Applied For > Program Applied. For the Interdisciplinary Graduate Programme, they should select IGPA.

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to visit the project site of the ASE and contact faculty members to discuss potential PhD topics.

Prospective candidates are strongly advised to explore the project site of the Asian School of the Environment (ASE) and initiate contact with faculty members to discuss potential PhD topics. Failure to engage with faculty before applying may reduce the likelihood of acceptance into the program.

Applicants have the option to apply to both the Asian School of the Environment and the Interdisciplinary Graduate Programme. Collaboration exists between EOS and both schools, and the scholarships offered by these institutions are identical. To submit an online application for research-based graduate programs:

For the PhD program under the Asian School of the Environment:

  • Access the Graduate Research Admission System.
  • Under “Program Applied For,” select “[221] Doctor of Philosophy (ASoE).”
  • In the ‘proposed supervisor’ section, you can specify the name of the professor whose research group you are interested in joining. However, the assignment of your application materials to a specific professor is at the discretion of the Selection Committee.

For the PhD program under the Interdisciplinary Graduate School (IGS):

  • All IGS students must have main and co-supervisors from different schools.
  • Navigate to the Graduate Research Admission System.
  • Under “Program Applied For,” select “[IGPA] Doctor of Philosophy IGPA – Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS).”
  • In the ‘proposed supervisor’ section, indicate the name of the professor whose research group you wish to join. However, the assignment of your application materials to a specific professor is subject to the discretion of the Selection Committee.
  • Please specify “Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS)” under ‘proposed field of research’ on the online application form.

How to apply

How to apply for a phd.

At NTU we offer opportunities for self-funded, part-funded and fully-funded PhDs, as well as Professional Doctorates. How you apply differs slightly depending on the type of Research Degree you are applying for.

Preparing a PhD application

Researcher working at desk

You can either apply for one of our PhD projects or submit your own proposal.

Our advertised projects will list the supervisors and how the PhD will be funded. If you are proposing your own project, you will need to find a supervisor and secure your own funding.

On the PhD application form there is a section for your research proposal. When applying for an advertised project, the title has already been developed. The research proposal section of your application should therefore focus on your understanding of the project’s significance and impact, along with the approach you would take.

In all cases, we recommend you discuss your research ideas with a potential supervisor before submitting your PhD application.

Ready to apply now? Head over to our application portal .

Preparing a Professional Doctorate application

If you are applying for a Professional Doctorate you don't need to find a supervisor, but you will need to produce a research proposal. Read your course page carefully as this details advice on what to include. You will need to outline how your research topic will be applied to your professional practice. If you are thinking about studying part-time, contact the Doctoral School and course leader for advice on whether a part-time PhD or Professional Doctorate would be best for you.

Learn more about Professional Doctorates at NTU

Can you do a PhD without a masters degree?

Applicants for PhD should normally hold a first or upper second-class honours degree of a UK university or an equivalent qualification, or a lower second-class honours degree with a master’s degree at Merit level from a UK university or an equivalent qualification.

An applicant not meeting the certificated requirement may be considered on merit using evidence of ability and background knowledge in relation to the proposed programme of research. Professional experience, publications, written reports or other appropriate evidence of accomplishment are taken into consideration.

  • Professional experience: include any relevant certification of professional experience, publications, written reports or other appropriate evidence of accomplishment.

Step 6: equal opportunities data

We are firmly committed to a diverse and inclusive research culture that is characterised by fairness and equality of opportunity for all. We are actively seeking applications from groups that are currently under-represented in research.

Any data that you provide in this section will not be used in the assessment of your application, but is a requirement of the application process.

New ntu programme to develop student talent in championing causes.

phd in education ntu

Image: NTU’s new Student Talent Development Programme (STDP) was launched at the University’s inaugural OneNTU Day. (L-R) Assoc Prof Jesvin Yeo, Deputy Associate Provost (Strategy);  Assoc Prof Andy Khong, Deputy Associate Provost (Student Life); Ms Tan Aik Na, NTU Senior Vice President (Administration); Prof Ho Teck Hua, NTU President; Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Education; Prof Ling San, NTU Deputy President and Provost; Prof Gan Chee Lip, Associate Provost (Undergraduate Education) and Assoc Prof Victor Yeo, Associate Provost (Student Life).

Calling all aspiring changemakers – NTU has launched a new programme aimed at empowering students to turn their passion into purposeful action, while nurturing their unique strengths and talents in non-academic fields.

The new Student Talent Development Programme (STDP) is designed to help students use their non-academic strengths to champion worthy causes and drive positive change in society.

Open to all NTU Singapore undergraduates, the programme comprises curated learning opportunities aligned to students’ interests, as well as leadership and capability development modules.

The STDP was launched today by Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Education as part of the inaugural OneNTU Day, an event that honours and celebrates the contributions of the NTU community.

STDP participants can expand their potential in five thematic learning domains, which are in technology, environment, innovation/entrepreneurship, well-being and healthcare, and culture and society.

The STDP goes hand in hand with the NTU Talent Scholarship, which was first awarded in February this year to undergraduates who are outstanding in their own fields and have made significant societal impact representing the University or the country.

At the end of the programme, participants will come up with an ‘impact initiative’, a project that addresses a specific gap or pain point, with the goal of positively impacting the NTU community and beyond.
