Higher education analysis firm QS Quacquarelli Symonds has unveiled the 2021 edition of its QS World University Rankings by Subject list that, along with 50 other areas of study, analyzes and compiles the crème de la crème of universities across the world with architecture schools . The subject-based rankings consider each school/program’s academic reputation and employer reputation as well as its research impact. (The full methodology can be read here .)

As pointed out by Archinect , the top five universities with architecture schools for 2021 are pretty much the same as they’ve been for the past several years, with some slight repositioning within the very top of the list. Like in 2020 , the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) claimed the top spot followed by University College London (UCL), Delft University of Technology, ETH Zurich, and Harvard University. In 2019, the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, led by dean Hashim Sarkis since 2015, was bumped from the top spot to second by the Bartlett School at UCL but jumped back up to the front of the list last year.

Within the top ten, there are only two new entries, including the National University of Singapore (up to sixth place from twelfth) and Tsinghua University in Beijing (leaping to the eighth slot from the eleventh) while England’s Manchester School of Architecture and Switzerland’s École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) fell out of the top ten to the eleventh and twelfth positions, respectively. The University of California, Berkley (dropping from sixth to seventh place) and Italy’s Politecnico di Milano (dropping seventh to tenth place) both hold their ranks within the top ten as does the University of Cambridge, which maintains its spot at number nine. So all and all, there’s hasn’t been much dramatic movement between 2020 and 2021.

In addition to MIT, Harvard, and UC Berkley, the top fifty North American universities with architecture schools are as follows: Columbia University (14), the University of California, Los Angeles (17), the Georgia Institute of Technology (23), Cornell University (26), the University of Pennsylvania (28), the University of British Columbia (30), the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor (31), Stanford University (34), University of Texas at Austin (40), McGill University (45), and the University of Toronto (46). North American universities to slip out of the top 50 include the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

A total of 220 universities appear on the 2021 rankings.

In a different subject area, civil and structural engineering , the top-listed universities are nearly exactly the same as for architecture although the exact positioning varies. Only one unique school, Imperial College London, that is not on the architecture top ten is listed as one of the top-ten universities for civil and structural engineering. Politecnico di Milano, squeaking in as a top-ten university for architecture, is ranked thirteenth on the 2021 civil and structural engineering list.

Another newer, noted architecture school/program ranking published by the Spain-based educational architecture platform Best Architecture Master’s ( BAM ) draws its annual list of the world’s top-ranked master’s degree programs—29 in total—from universities that appear on the annual QS World University Rankings. As noted last August when the 2020 edition of BAM was released, the programs are compared, evaluated, and ranked by a 19-person committee composed of architecture professors using BAM’s point-system-based methodology that includes 11 educational performance indicators and 41 sub-indicators. The top five master’s degree in architecture programs per the BAM Ranking 2020 were: Master of Architecture II (Harvard University), Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design (Columbia University), Master of Advanced Studies in Collective Housing (MCH) (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid / ETH Zurich, Madrid, Spain), The Berlage Post-master degree in Architecture and Urban Design (TUDelft), and the Master of Science in Architecture and Urbanism (SMArch Urbanism) (MIT).

While the overlap is significant, the variation between the two rankings goes to show that some of the world’s most esteemed master’s degree programs in architecture aren’t exclusively offered at the top five—or even ten—universities with architecture schools per the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

UT Austin Arts and Humanities Ranked Among Best in the World

tower, fall, trees, campus, yellow leaves

AUSTIN, Texas — The University of Texas at Austin is No. 5 among U.S. public universities, No. 17 in the U.S. and No. 50 in the world for education in the arts and humanities, according to the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

More than 600 universities from around the world are included in the Times Higher Education rankings this year. The list highlights universities that are leading in the following disciplines: art, performing arts, design, languages, literature, linguistics, history, philosophy, theology, architecture and archaeology.

A number of factors were considered, including teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.

“We’re proud to see the incredible work and impact of the creative and scholarly research of our faculty and students recognized in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings,” said College of Fine Arts Dean Ramón H. Rivera-Servera. “These rankings validate what we already know — that our students receive a world-class education in the arts and humanities at The University of Texas at Austin.”

Technology-focused universities saw a rise across the board in the 2022 rankings, potentially signaling increases in collaboration between the two disciplines. Interdisciplinary study and research are priorities for arts and humanities colleges at UT Austin, including the School of Architecture.

“With disciplines spanning all scales of the built environment, the UT School of Architecture offers students an environment that couples individual exploration with collaborative problem solving to build their capacity to plan, design, and effect change in the world around us,” said Michelle Addington, dean of the School of Architecture. “We never lose sight that our disciplines’ primary role is to serve the public through our professions, and over the years, we have developed a strong curriculum that fosters dialogue, interdisciplinary collaboration, risk-taking, and hands-on learning to give our students and our school a competitive edge.”

UT Austin is the only university in Texas included in the global top 50 for the arts and humanities. Rice University and Texas A&M University rank in the 201-250 range.

“This is a wonderful affirmation of the value of arts and humanities degrees at UT Austin,” said Ann Stevens, dean of the College of Liberal Arts. “Our faculty, staff and students are at the heart of what makes the university and the city of Austin such a dynamic and exciting place to be.”

This is just one of several recent rankings that recognize the university’s academic and research strengths. The university ranked No. 38 among all U.S. universities in U.S. News & World Report’s latest undergraduate rankings. Earlier this year, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed UT Austin No. 47 overall in the world and No. 7 among U.S. public universities.

Times Higher Education names MIT No. 2 university worldwide for the arts and humanities

The Times Higher Education 2018 World University Rankings has named MIT the No. 2 university in the world for arts and humanities. The two top ranked universities — Stanford University and MIT — are closely aligned in the evaluation metrics, which assess the arts and humanities at research-intensive universities across core missions, including research, teaching, and international outlook.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings by Times Higher Education, a leading British education magazine. This ranking of MIT’s global role in the arts and humanities follows other recent recognition for the Institute’s contributions to individual fields and disciplines. The 2018 QS World University rankings, for example, name MIT as the world’s top university for architecture, economics, engineering, linguistics, and natural sciences, as well as the No. 1 university in the world overall.

Of the Times Higher Education ranking, MIT President L. Rafael Reif said, “Perhaps because 'TECHNOLOGY' is carved in stone above MIT's front door, outsiders are not always prepared for the caliber of our research and education in the humanities and the arts. But it is the wisdom of the remarkable scholars in these fields, and lessons from their disciplines, that help our students develop fully into the creative citizens and inspired leaders they seek to become.”

“The arts and humanities are deeply embedded at MIT, throughout our schools and departments and across the curriculum,” said Hashim Sarkis, dean of the School of Architecture and Planning. “I am delighted to see this broad strength recognized not only for its importance to MIT but for what it offers to the world.” Outstanding programs in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences — including linguistics, history, philosophy, music and theater arts, literature, global studies and languages, media studies, and writing — sit alongside equally strong initiatives within the School of Architecture and Planning in the visual arts, architecture, design, and history, theory, and criticism. These disciplines are complemented by the Center for Art, Society and Technology (CAST), the office of the Arts at MIT, the MIT LIST Visual Arts Center, and the MIT Museum.

“At MIT, we view the humanities and arts as essential for advancing knowledge, for educating young students, and for solving global issues,” said Melissa Nobles, Kenan Sahin dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. “The world’s problems are so complex they’re not only scientific and technological problems. They are as much human and moral problems.”

MIT placed second in Times Higher Ed ’s 2018 arts and humanities ranking, reports Ellie Bothwell. “The multidisciplinary nature of the institute is certainly invaluable – not only for educating citizens, engineers, scholars, artists and scientists, but for sustaining the institute’s capacity to tackle challenges,” explains Melissa Nobles, dean of the MIT School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences.

University Rankings

Competition among universities is increasing. University rankings are, therefore, being followed more closely than ever. Here is a selection of rankings:

Worldwide rankings

Times higher education world university rankings (great britain).

In the current issue of this ranking, the TU Berlin was placed 136th. In Germany, it achieved 13th place, and 3rd when compared to Germany’s other major technical universities. The annual ranking from the British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) is based on the five core categories of teaching, international outlook, industry income, research, and citations. For the current issue, about 1900 universities worldwide were included; 52 of those universities are in Germany. (Sept. 2023) In the subject-specific "THE World University Rankings by subject", the TU Berlin achieved the distinction of being ranked among the 100 best universities in the world for Computer Science (56th), Engineering and Technology (75th) as well as physical sciences (89th). (Oct. 2023) Furthermore, TU Berlin placed 10th in the "Digital Leaders in Higher Education" ranking. (April 2023)

QS Top Universities Ranking (Great Britain)

In the current ranking, the TU Berlin is now in 154th place worldwide. Within Germany, the TU achieved 8th place, and 4th among Germany's major technical universities. (June 2023) The subject-specific QS World University Rankings by Subject also award the TU Berlin top scores, especially in technical and engineering areas. In these subject groups, it was ranked 52nd globally and 3rd in Germany. The best individual ratings were achieved by Architecture (ranked 18th globally and 1st nationally). (March 2023)

Academic Ranking of World Universities (China)

In the worldwide TOP 500 ranking from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the TU Berlin is currently listed among the best 400 universities in the world. In Germany, it was placed in the 20th to 25th place category, and 5th among Germany's technical universities. (2022)

U-Multirank (Germany/Netherlands)

In contrast to other rankings, in the "U-Multirank" there are no set best lists. Instead, each user defines their most important criteria and then receives an individually created ranking. The EU-funded project is supervised by the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) and includes more than 2200 universities worldwide.

German rankings

Humboldt ranking.

The Humboldt Ranking counts the research stays of fellowship recipients and award winners from the Humboldt Foundation at German research institutions. Between 2018 and 2022, a total of 129 international researchers chose the TU Berlin for their research stays, putting it in 8th place in the ranking. In engineering sciences, it was ranked an impressive 2nd, and 6th in natural sciences. (Nov. 2023)

German Research Foundation (DFG) Funding Atlas

The funding atlas offers key figures for publicly funded research in Germany. Every three years, it gives an overview of external funding from the DFG, the German Federal Government, and the EU as well as funding of individuals from the AvH, the DAAD, and the ERC and evaluates these funding sources for universities and non-university research institutions. The current ranking states which universities received the most DFG funds between 2017 and 2019. With a total of EUR 141.8 million, TU Berlin was ranked 26th. In natural sciences and in engineering it was ranked 9th. For engineering scientists with AvH or DAAD funding, the TU Berlin is the second and third most popular host university respectively, for natural scientists it is fourth and fifth most popular. (2021)

DAAD Funding Ranking

According to the latest statistics published by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the TU Berlin received 10,146,393 euros in funding in 2021. This means fourth place among all the universities in Germany. (June 2022)

Academic subjects

Che university ranking.

The University Ranking from the Centre for Higher Education (CHE) helps prospective students find the right university. The overview includes both bachelor and master degrees. Each subject is re-evaluated every three years.

Surveys of companies

The ranking was carried out by the consulting firm Universum Communications and published in the magazine WirtschaftsWoche. According to the assessment of about 500 HR officers across Germany, TU Berlin came in 1st place in computer science and 2nd place in mechanical engineering. (May 2023)

QS Graduate Employability Ranking

The ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) in Great Britain links several thematically relevant issues. Besides assessments from 44,000 employers worldwide, the ranking includes (research) cooperation with the industrial sector, the presence of companies on campus (at career fairs, career workshops, and similar offers for students), the alumni employment rate, and information concerning where some 29,000 internationally influential people were educated. In total, the TU Berlin ranked 111-120th globally and 34th in Europe, with the numerous and diverse contacts between companies and students being given particular prominence. Among the 14 German universities that were evaluated, the TU Berlin came in 4th place. (Sept. 2021)

Times Higher Education Global University Employability Ranking

The question which graduates were especially well-prepared for the job market is the central focus of trendence's global ranking, which included surveys of employers in 24 countries. In international comparison, TU Berlin graduates are well-prepared and helped their alma mater achieve a place among the top 100 universities (53rd) worldwide. In Germany, the TU Berlin was ranked 3rd. (Nov. 2022)

F.A.Z. Economists Ranking

For their economists ranking, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (F.A.Z.) determined the level of influence scientists have in the media, politics and research. For the detailed ranking of economic researchers, the F.A.Z. counted citations in science and the most important media, a survey was conducted of politicians at both federal and state level, and the individual's twitter ranking was evaluated. In the ranking, Ottmar Edenhofer, professor for the economics of climate change at the TU Berlin, director of the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) and chief economist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), was ranked 15th, and Gert G. Wagner, professor of empirical economic research and economic policy at the TU Berlin and member of the board at the DIW Berlin, was 25th. (Sept. 2021)

Business Administration Ranking by Wirtschaftswoche

The ranking commissioned by the magazine "WirtschaftsWoche" examines the performance of business administration professors in the German-speaking region based on their publications in international journals. In the "lifetime" category, which evaluates the scholarly achievements of business economists, three professors from TU Berlin were ranked: Prof. Dr. Knut Blind (Chair of Innovation Economics) achieved the 100th position, closely followed by Prof. Dr. Reinhard Busse (Chair of Health Care Management) at 104th place. Prof. Dr. Axel von Werder (Chair of Organization and Corporate Management) secured the 137th position. In the "under 40" category, Prof. Dr. Timm Teubner (Chair of Trust in Digital Services) achieved 29th place. (Nov. 2022)

Participate in next year’s impact rankings.

It is the sixth year of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, and they show clearly that the university sector is having an outsized impact on the world’s progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) .

That said, some institutions and regions are making more progress than others. Oceania, in particular Australia, is a region that takes sustainability extremely seriously. We see this each year when the tables are published, and 2024 is no different. Looking at the overall table, Australian universities now take four of the top 10 spots, up from three in 2023.

This year, another trend has begun to emerge: some countries are showing great leadership when it comes to particular SDGs. Here, we explore those beacons of excellence and the strategies behind the success.

Industry, innovation and infrastructure: a German story

Investment in infrastructure is crucial to achieving sustainable development, and German universities are world leaders in this area.

As well as measuring research output linked to industry, the table for SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure) tracks the patents that cite a university’s work, university spin-offs and the amount of research income that comes from industry .

Five German universities have perfect scores in this table: RWTH Aachen University , the Technical University of Munich , TU Dresden , the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the University of Stuttgart .

“One key factor why German universities generally perform well in SDG 9 can be attributed to the strong tradition of technically oriented universities, with particularly numerous strong engineering institutes. Here, alongside basic research, collaborative research with industry partners has long been strongly promoted,” says Peter Middendorf, vice-rector for knowledge and technology transfer at the University of Stuttgart.

One particularly successful initiative at Stuttgart is a campus called ARENA2036, which enables joint research and collaboration between people from industry and academia on-site, “on an equal footing”. Several large regional and national companies, as well as smaller firms and start-ups, contribute their expertise and outline their needs. Crucially, the collaboration is underpinned by a legal framework that means “the question of who owns what is developed is clearly regulated”.

The university also invests in the development of spin-offs, from teaching about the process and offering coaching and consulting to providing nationally and internationally oriented accelerator programmes.

The University of Erlangen-Nuremberg also credits a focus on innovation for its high score in this table. The institution says its location is helpful – it is right next door to large companies such as Siemens and Adidas – and Erlangen was recently rated the best German city for innovation.

The university co-founded an innovation hub called ZOLLHOF , which was recently ranked among Europe’s top 50 by the Financial Times . It also invests heavily in in-house consulting services for business founders.

“We [initiate] competitive formats, from hackathons to elevator pitches, and accompany our students on their way towards a successful business plan, seed money and business angel support,” says Joachim Hornegger, the university’s president.

He adds that his institution does “not draw the line too strictly between fundamental research and application”.

“Both are in our focus, and basic research is heavily driven by questions in applied research,” he says.

Responsible consumption and production: the UK dominates

The efficient use of resources and the minimisation of waste will never be achieved without the support of the university sector, but which regions are setting the pace globally? When it comes to SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production) , the UK is especially strong, taking eight of the top 10 places, as well as one-third of the top 100 positions.

Bournemouth University and King’s College London jointly top the table, followed by the University of Reading in third. The universities of Sheffield, Plymouth , Exeter  and Manchester and Swansea University also make the top 10.

As well as measuring research on the topic, this table looks at operational measures in relation to responsible consumption and production, a university’s proportion of recycled waste, and whether the institution publishes a sustainability report .

THE spoke to some of the universities leading the pack, and a few themes emerged: one is the importance of having someone senior take a lead on the strategy; another is being meticulous about setting targets and tracking progress with data.

At Bournemouth, for example, the institution knows “exactly how much [waste] we produce and where it goes”, says Lois Betts, its sustainability manager.

UK universities are especially good at ensuring that their supply chains, as well as their own institutions, are as sustainable as possible, and all emphasise the importance of applying principles of the circular economy in their policies.

“The carbon emissions in our supply chain come from all over the world,” says Rosalind Farrow, carbon data manager at the University of Sheffield . “Materials may be grown or mined on one continent, refined on another and turned into a finished product somewhere else, before finally being shipped to the UK. Supply chain carbon emissions are, therefore, our opportunity to influence global carbon emissions, rather than just those from our own operations.”

Using unique initiatives to tackle specific types of waste was also a common activity. At Swansea, for example, there are separate recycling facilities for less commonly reused items such as stationery. And at King’s, staff who need furniture must check if the item they want is available in an internal furniture reuse platform before they can purchase something new. So far, this has diverted 1,855kg of waste from landfill, reduced emissions by 4,909kg of CO 2 e and saved the university £12,514.

Making it easy for students and staff to reuse or recycle is another key factor. Swansea has an app that incentivises daily recycling and waste avoidance, while the climate and sustainability delivery team at King’s is about to launch a two-year behavioural change campaign focusing on waste.

“The aim is to double down on efforts to reduce single-use plastics and change staff and student behaviours on campus through an extensive series of communications [and] educational and informative events,” says Frans Berkhout, assistant principal of King’s Climate & Sustainability.

Several of the universities combine food waste reduction with local community outreach. Bournemouth, for example, is the UK research partner for FoodMAPP, a project that helps consumers find and buy local food supplies, reducing waste and supporting sustainable purchasing.

According to Julian Skyrme, director of social responsibility at the University of Manchester , “the UK does comparatively well due to the quality of its research on consumption and production, and perhaps due to national environmental legislation that may employ relatively more carrots and sticks to prompt action in this area”.

Decent work and economic growth: South Korea tops the table

The top four spots in the SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) table all go to institutions in South Korea. The country has three more in the top 100.

This table reveals a university’s success as an engine of economic growth and its role as a responsible employer . It tracks institutions’ economic research, their employment practices, their expenditure per employee, the share of students taking work placements and the share of employees on secure contracts.

Pusan National University , which ranks third in the table, has a high proportion of staff on secure contracts. Eunjin Kim, from the university’s division of planning and evaluation, attributes this to national policy, as faculty and staff are national public officials.

When it comes to spending per staff, Pusan is “implementing a stronger investment policy to improve the academic environment for students and the education, research and welfare environment for faculty and staff”, she says. “As a result, the expenditure per employee has been increasing every year.”

The university has also placed a big emphasis on student work experience through its Field Training Support Centre, and it is “making efforts to enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of field training by collecting opinions from trainee students and domestic and international companies”.

“As a result, the number of participating students is gradually increasing, leading to an increase in employment rates,” says Kim.

Clean water and sanitation: Australia leads again

When it comes to contributing to SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation) , Australian universities are among the very best globally, with seven in the top 10. UNSW Sydney , the University of Newcastle , the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Macquarie University , Griffith University , Western Sydney University and RMIT University all feature in the elite group.

This table measures universities’ research on water, their water consumption, their water usage and care, their water reuse and their work relating to water in the community .

As with the UK universities’ approach to waste management, a common theme is meticulous data collection and analysis, especially when it comes to water reuse and recycling. Another is strong partnerships with other types of organisations, as might be expected when dealing with a resource such as water. UTS, for example, partners with Melbourne water businesses to help cut demand and reduce the pressure on natural water supplies, while Macquarie has been collaborating with Sydney Water for more than two decades to help ensure the cleanliness of the city’s drinking water.

Universities cite numerous impactful initiatives on their own campuses, such as Macquarie’s Mars Creek project to restore a creek that runs through the campus by introducing thousands of native plants.

A common element is a community-led approach and the involvement of multidisciplinary teams. Several institutions also mention working with local Indigenous communities. One example is Western Sydney’s involvement as a founding member in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Waterkeeper Alliance, which works with Dharug people. At Newcastle, “the impacts [of climate variability] on Indigenous and developing communities in the region are a particular focus”, says Jennifer Milam, its pro vice-chancellor (academic excellence).

These institutions also contribute to water management in neighbouring countries and further afield, often leveraging their local successes. For example, Western Sydney is the Australian lead of the Australia India Water Centre, a collaboration of Australian and Indian universities, research institutions and water businesses in water research, education, training and capacity-building.

“Western recognises that research which breaks new ground and offers solutions to the challenges faced by the modern world can often start as a hyperlocal project,” says Deborah Sweeney, Western Sydney’s deputy vice-chancellor and vice-president (research, enterprise and international).

Australian universities credit a strong policy framework and funding initiatives at the national, regional and local government levels – such as the Australian Water Partnership, launched by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2015 to share Australia’s water expertise – for their success in this area. This has come about, they say, because of the changing climate, which has amplified the extremes of drought and floods in Australia and its Pacific neighbours.

Nicole Marchhart, head of sustainability at Macquarie, says: “In Australia, a country well versed in drought and its devastating impact, water conservation is a glaring issue. The commitment of Australian universities in this area is a case of necessity.”

the 2

Manchester Met has made a significant leap in the  Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024 , climbing 22 places to 44th. This puts the University in the top 3% of ranked institutions globally and 9th in the UK.

This overall ranking reflects the University’s growing influence and commitment to sustainability and tackling social inequalities on a global scale.

The THE Impact Rankings assess universities around the world against the  United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , measuring institutions’ contributions to society through their research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.

The rise in the THE Impact Rankings reflects a strategic commitment to addressing global challenges through excellent education and delivering research with impact – two of the core goals of our Road to 2030 Strategy.

In this year’s rankings, Manchester Met reached the top 20 in the world for SDG12  Responsible Consumption and Production  andSDG17  Partnership for the Goals,  and top 100 for SDG8  Decent Work and Economic Growth  andSDG15  Life on Land.

In 2023, Manchester Met celebrated 11 years as a top three sustainable university in the  People and Planet University League * and has pledged to integrate Education for Sustainable Development and Carbon Literacy across all courses by 2026.

Professor Liz Price, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor Sustainability at Manchester Met, said:

“This significant rise of 22 places in the THE Impact Rankings is a testament to our collective efforts and unwavering dedication to sustainability and tackling social inequality. It reinforces our position as a leading institution committed to making a positive difference.

“As we continue to enhance our contributions across the SDGs, we aim to build on this result; fostering innovation, inclusivity and sustainability, driving transformative change, and using our impactful research to tackle the grand challenges of our time on a global scale.”

In 2022, Manchester Met published its  Leadership in Sustainability Strategy,  detailing ambitious targets and aiming to set an example of sustainability for universities around the world. The strategy builds on the University’s work in shaping a greener, zero-carbon campus and sustainable practices.
