MA in Leadership and Management

Degrees offered.

Ethical, constructive leaders consider broad social implications of their decisions as they encourage individuals, teams, and organizations to attain personal and organizational objectives. The Master of Arts in Leadership and Management Program of Study promotes flexible, rational approaches and greater capacity to integrate different perspectives in responsible, creative, planning and problem-solving.

Program Objectives

In a fast-paced world, competitive organizations require good management and strong leadership at every level. The Master of Arts in Leadership and Management at Notre Dame of Maryland University prepares leaders to master challenges and to effect change through discernment and ethics. While the practice of management and leadership are closely related, they are distinguishable. Both entail influence and goal accomplishment. Management is commonly seen in terms of reducing chaos in organizations and running them more effectively and efficiently through planning and budgeting, organizing and staffing, controlling and problem-solving. Leadership emphasizes establishing direction and aligning people as well as motivating, empowering and inspiring individuals. Ethical, positive leaders consider broad social implications of their decisions as they encourage individuals, teams, and organizations to attain personal and corporate objectives.

The Master of Arts in Leadership and Management offers a mindful approach to excellence in directing organizational resources and people. The Program of Study is designed for professional women and men in any field who are or who expect to assume organizational leadership responsibilities. The mission of the Program is to prepare leaders who act from an ethical base to master challenges and effect change toward the realization of individual and organizational potential.

The Program of Study emphasizes understanding the human dimension of organizations. The leadership and management of complex organizations must be practiced within the broader context of life itself: Why do people work, and what gives meaning and value to their work? What inspires women and men to higher levels of achievement through cooperative teamwork? Fundamental questions such as these have immediate relevance to those in positions of leadership. The needs and aspirations of individual women and men are woven into the daily activity of all organizations, regardless of their size or purpose.

Therefore, this Program of Study examines both the science and art of leadership and management. Effective leadership calls for the self-management and self-motivation in addition to requiring technical expertise in business administration. The practice of management requires significant human skills and resources in our complex, ever-changing world. As articulated in this degree program, leadership speaks to the heart of the organization's most important resource: its people.

A distinctive feature of this program is its multidisciplinary foundation in business and the liberal arts. The required curriculum includes courses in business communications, ethics, economics, management, leadership, decision-making, technology, and various other facets of business administration. Active participation in the program develops competence in using flexible yet rational approaches to leadership and management which result in greater capacity to integrate different perspectives in responsible, creative planning and problem-solving. Students graduate with a balanced set of leadership and managerial skills and values enabling them to develop the resources of an organization for greater productivity and benefit to society.

Program of Study

The Program of Study leading to the Master of Arts in Leadership and Management requires completion of a minimum of 39 credits of course work. The core curriculum of 27 credits develops the essential foundation for the Program. The required core curriculum encourages breadth of learning in general leadership and management without technical specialization.

Students may select an area of concentration or create an individualized specialization for their remaining 12 credits. The areas of concentration are Health Care Administration, Human Resource Management, Information Systems, Principled Leadership, and Project Management. The concentrations provide depth in the subject areas.

A baccalaureate degree is required for admission. Computer competency in word processing, presentation software and spreadsheet applications is required. However, there are no undergraduate prerequisites in Business. Applicants who have recently earned a baccalaureate in Business, with a superior academic record, may be granted advanced standing upon admission into the Program. Students with advanced standing may waive up to nine credits from the core curriculum. All requirements for the degree must be completed within seven years from the date of admission. Students must maintain a 3.0 (B) Cumulative Grade Point Average to remain in Academic Good Standing. Students whose Cumulative Grade Point Average falls below 3.0 will be placed on Academic Probation status. Students on Academic Probation will be given three semesters (in which they register for a course) to raise their Cumulative Grade Point Average to 3.0. Failure to do so, or receiving more than two grades below a B, will result in Academic Dismissal from the graduate program. These provisions do not apply to students admitted provisionally; provisions governing that status are identified in the Letter of Admission.

Courses are scheduled primarily on weekday evenings for the convenience of students. Part-time graduate Leadership and Management students may enroll in a maximum of six credits during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Students who wish to study full-time (more than six credits per semester must receive permission from the Dean of the School of Arts, Sciences, and Business). All graduate students are restricted to three credits during the Winterim semester.

Students completing this Program of Study will understand:

  • theory and practice of effective leadership and management;
  • applications of economic theory and financial analysis in effective decision-making; and,
  • concepts and principles of effective communication

Students will be able to:

  • create holistic, systems-thinking approaches to decision-making grounded in leadership and business principles;
  • express critical thinking through strategic, ethical, socially responsible, well-reasoned action and communication;
  • demonstrate objectivity in gathering and analyzing information in management and leadership decision-making processes;
  • examine organizational problems, develop sound solutions, and evaluate consequences of actions; and,
  • integrate scholarship into personal and professional leadership capacities that transform individual lives, organizations and society.

Students will recognize the importance of:

  • taking ethical approaches to leadership and management decisions;
  • maintaining personal integrity;
  • respecting the integrity, individuality and potential of colleagues; and,
  • fulfilling social responsibility.

Are you a professional with a topic you wish to research to the highest academic level? The University of Notre Dame Australia is proud to offer the opportunity to work on a PhD to students who have achieved outstanding results in their Honours or Masters. Completed over three years of full-time study, your PhD will require you to work closely with two academic supervisors as you undertake a significant piece of research, which may include a substantial new discovery or an original adaptation, application or interpretation of existing knowledge. Start your learning journey today.

Why study this degree?

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a thesis-based research degree. It has been individually designed and built around the research methodology required, the nature of your thesis topic and the candidate’s background. If necessary, you may also be required to undertake research training or further coursework as part of your PhD program. Candidates will benefit from ongoing support, mentoring or involvement in our research culture.

A PhD may be completed as a traditional thesis or a thesis by publication or as a non-traditional thesis (exegesis) and creative artefact. Your PhD should be based on an advanced investigation into a significant question related to your current field. The thesis should make an original and substantial contribution to the humanities, social sciences, applied sciences or Aboriginal studies.

Before submitting your application to enrol in a Doctor of Philosophy, you must discuss your application with a suitably qualified member of the academic staff, preferably one you wish to be your principal research supervisor.

The Commonwealth Government’s Research Training Program (RTP) provides financial support for domestic candidates. Meanwhile, international students are required to pay full fees but may apply for a wide range of scholarships made available to candidates of exceptional potential.

Program summary

Notre Dame Law School alumnae Kari Lorentson ’19 J.D. and Elizabeth Totzke ’22 J.D. to clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett

Published: May 20, 2024 Author: Denise Wager

Two Notre Dame Law School graduates, Kari Lorentson ’19 J.D. and Elizabeth Totzke ’22 J.D. will clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett during the 2024-25 term.

Justice Barrett graduated from Notre Dame Law School in 1997. She joined the faculty in 2002 and remained a faculty member until her confirmation to the Supreme Court.

Kari Lorenston

Kari Lorentson  is a 2019 graduate of Notre Dame Law School.

“Clerking for Justice Barrett is a dream come true,” Lorentson said. “My very first class at Notre Dame Law School was civil procedure on a Monday morning — taught by then-Professor Barrett. I ended up taking several of her classes during law school and served as her research assistant.”

In fact, this is Lorentson’s second clerkship with Justice Barrett. She clerked for then-Judge Barrett on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in 2020. However, her clerkship was cut short when Barrett was confirmed to the Supreme Court in October 2020 .

“I am thrilled to spend an entire year learning from Justice Barrett at the Supreme Court,” Lorentson said.

Lorentson completed her clerkship at the Seventh Circuit with Judge Michael Y. Scudder, Jr. She also clerked for Judge Gerald J. Pappert ’88 J.D. of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania immediately after she graduated.

“I’m grateful to have clerked for all three judges. They are sharp thinkers, generous mentors, and models of integrity,” Lorentson said. “My experiences clerking at both district and appellate courts allowed for a front-row seat in witnessing the litigation process play out from start to finish. I’m excited to spend another year absorbing as much as possible from our nation’s top legal minds.”

As a law student, Lorentson served as executive editor of the Notre Dame Law Review and was a member of the Moot Court Board. She received the Colonel William J. Hoynes Award, which is presented to one member of each graduating class and is Notre Dame Law School’s highest academic honor.

Lorentson said that several professors, along with her classmates, were especially supportive in preparing her to clerk during law school.

“The professors at the Law School are not only talented in their teaching and scholarship, but they are also deeply devoted to developing the next generation of lawyers. I’m also grateful for my classmates and for the collegial and supportive environment that the Law School fosters,” said Lorentson. “My professors at Notre Dame and the judges for whom I clerked instilled in me the importance of using my education to serve the public, and it is a privilege and honor to be able to do so at the Supreme Court.”

"Kari Lorentson is a superb lawyer and a person of exceptional judgment. From her early days as a law student, she had an extraordinary ability to identify the core issues in complex legal problems, and to appreciate the broader significance of those issues for the legal system as a whole,” said O’Toole Professor of Constitutional Law Anthony J. Bellia . “She will serve Justice Barrett and the Supreme Court very well."

Lorentson is currently an associate at Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, D.C.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from American University.

Lorentson’s time at Notre Dame made a lasting impact on her personal life as well. She met her husband, Matt Razzano ’19 J.D., while in law school, and they have a young daughter, Charlotte.

Elizabeth Totzke

Elizabeth Totzke is a 2022 graduate of the Notre Dame Law School. After graduating, she clerked for Chief Judge Diane Sykes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit during the 2022-23 term. Totzke is just completing her second clerkship with Judge David Stras of the U.S. Court of Appeals for Eighth Circuit.

“Clerking has been such an enriching, meaningful experience. It has exposed me to new areas of the law, helped me to grow as a legal thinker and writer, and introduced me to lifelong friends. I am so grateful to both Judge Sykes and Judge Stras for giving me these opportunities and for mentoring me along the way,” said Totzke.

Reflecting on her selection to clerk for Justice Barrett, Totzke also expressed deep admiration for Justice Barrett.

“It is the honor of a lifetime to have been selected to clerk for Justice Barrett, whom I have admired since the start of my time at Notre Dame Law,” said Totzke. “She is a brilliant jurist, and perhaps even more importantly, she is an excellent role model with paramount integrity and a deep commitment to her faith and family. I am thrilled to have the chance to learn from her.”

Totzke sees her clerkship with Justice Barrett as a significant opportunity for professional and personal growth.

“It is an immense privilege to have the opportunity to assist Justice Barrett as she and the rest of the Court resolve the important cases of next term. I hope to serve well,” said Totzke. “I also am looking forward to learning from Justice Barrett, the other Justices, my co-clerks, and the country’s best advocates—both through observation and instruction. Whether it be at oral argument, in chambers, or otherwise, I have no doubt that next year will be filled with opportunities to hone my skills as a young lawyer.”

While at ND Law Totzke served as the managing articles editor for the Notre Dame Law Review and as a student fellow in the Notre Dame Law School Religious Liberty Initiative .

Totzke received the Dean Joseph O’Meara Award, one of the three highest academic awards, presented annually to a member of the Law School graduating class for outstanding academic achievement.

“I feel so fortunate for my time at Notre Dame Law School. Not only did I receive a top-notch legal education, but I was also consistently reminded of the importance of leading a virtuous and meaningful life,” said Totzke. “My professors taught by example; they are as kind and generous as they are accomplished. I am so grateful for their mentorship and guidance.”

“Elizabeth was an exceptional student and a leader among her peers. I had the privilege of working with her on a Supreme Court amicus brief in an important religious liberty case, as well as co-authoring an op-ed with her about the case, and her contributions were outstanding,” said Nicole Stelle Garnett, associate dean for external engagement and John P. Murphy Foundation Professor of Law. “The opportunity to form young lawyers like Elizabeth, who will go on to do great things, is an immense privilege. I know that she'll make Notre Dame proud.”

Totzke received her undergraduate degree from St. Norbert College. Her husband, Hunter Van Asten, is also a 2022 ND Law graduate.

Two members of Notre Dame Law School’s faculty will join Lorentson and Totzke as clerks for the October 2024 term.

Professor of Law Christian Burset will clerk for Justice Neil Gorsuch, and Associate Professor of Law Rev. Patrick Reidy, C.S.C., will clerk for Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Lorentson and Totzke will be the fifth and sixth graduates of Notre Dame Law School to clerk at the Supreme Court since the 2019-20 term.

Laura Wolk ’16 J.D. clerked for Justice Clarence Thomas during the 2019-20 term.

Audrey Beck ’17 J.D. clerked for Justice Brett Kavanaugh during the 2019-20 term.

Alexa Baltes ’17 J.D. clerked for Justice Brett Kavanaugh during the 2021-22 term.

Timothy Bradley ’20 J.D . clerked for Justice Amy Coney Barrett during the 2022-2023 term.

Notre Dame Law School has 14 former Supreme Court clerks on its faculty, which amounts to more than one-third of the Law School’s tenured and tenure-track faculty members.

In addition, the Law School is ranked #4 in the nation in placing graduates in federal clerkships, which are typically considered a stepping stone to clerking at the Supreme Court.

Notre Dame lacrosse lands program record 11 USILA All-Americans

N otre Dame has the best men’s lacrosse team in the country. So obviously that means South Bend is home to some of the best men’s lacrosse players in the country, too.

Just shy of a dozen nationally recognized ones, in fact.

The No. 1 Fighting Irish (14-1) landed 11 USILA All-Americans on Thursday — two days before facing No. 5 Denver (13-3) in the Final Four in Philadelphia — a new program record.

Here’s a look at all 11 of Notre Dame’s honorees. A full list of every winner can be found here .

2024 USILA All-Americans from Notre Dame

• Graduate senior attackman Pat Kavanagh

• Junior midfielder Ben Ramsey

• Graduate senior goalie Liam Entenmann

SECOND TEAM

• Senior midfielder Eric Dobson

• Freshman midfielder Will Donovan

• Freshman defenseman Shawn Lyght

• Junior attackman Chris Kavanagh

• Graduate senior attackman Jake Taylor

• Graduate senior midfielder Devon McLane

• Junior midfielder Will Lynch

• Graduate senior defenseman Chris Conlin

Entenmann was also named the National Goalie of the Year on Thursday in addition to his first-team All-America nod. He’s the first Notre Dame goalie to win the award multiple times. Entenmann has a 9.39 goals against average, which ranks fourth nationally, and a .551 save percentage, which ranks 14th in the country.

The Kavanagh brothers pace Notre Dame in scoring. Chris has 72 points while Pat, who is a finalist for the Tewaaraton Award along with Entenmann, has 69. Chris also leads the team in goals with 36 while Pat has the most assists at 41.

Having two freshmen not named Jordan Faison make the second-team All-America cut goes to show just how talented the Fighting Irish are moving forward. Sure, there are a lot of graduate seniors departing the program at the end of what they hope will be another national championship season, but the future is bright with Donovan, Lyght and others — including juniors like the younger Kavanagh, Ramsey and Lynch.

Lynch has the second-best face-off percentage in the country at .625. Notre Dame has the No. 1 offense in the land, averaging 15.87 goals per game, and much of that can be attributed to the extra possessions given to the Irish by Lynch’s prowess in the center circle.

The Irish’s title defense continues against the Pioneers at noon ET Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The winner of that national semifinal will take on the winner of No. 6 Virginia vs. No. 7 Maryland on Monday at 1 p.m. ET.

Alumni Profile: Meet Business Grad Melanie Maggine '23

Published: May 29, 2024

Author: Elizabeth Prater

Melanie Maggine

Originally hailing from El Paso, Texas, Melanie Maggine is a graduate of Notre Dame’s Class of 2023. During her time at Notre Dame, she studied marketing through the Mendoza College of Business and completed a Spanish supplementary major and an innovation and entrepreneurship minor .

Maggine was also involved in a myriad of business organizations as well as ND Listens, and she was active in her residence hall, Breen-Phillips Hall.

Coming to Notre Dame, Maggine did not necessarily have her sights set on her chosen academic disciplines. “I came in just knowing I wanted to do business,” she says. “I decided to do marketing because it was creative and analytical.”

She added Spanish to regain some of her language skills and finally added the innovation and entrepreneurship minor when she discovered her aptitude in this field.

Currently, Maggine works as a Business Development Representative at G2 in Chicago.

She describes how she leverages her degree in her day-to-day role: “Sales is housed under marketing at ND to a degree; however, in the real world, marketing and sales are two totally different things. I like that sales is both creative and analytical just like marketing, but it’s a higher-stress environment and more competitive since you have a quota to reach.”

When reflecting on her coursework at Notre Dame, Maggine has difficulty pinning down a few favorites. “The professors care so much, so I had great experiences in almost all of [my classes],” Maggine shares. “The most unique class I took was Acting for the Non-Major with Sir Anton Juan, and the one I think about the most post-grad is Why Business with Professor Otteson and Professor Hirschfeld.”

The alumni network plays a large role in Maggine’s life. “I connect with ND alums all the time to talk about their careers to get a better idea of where I want to take mine. Having started sales right out of college with no prior experience, I’ve recently been leaning on my ND sales network a lot,” she says. “ND alums are always willing to help, which has been so fun. The best part about being post-grad is when students start to reach out to you as well and you can help them in the way others have helped you; so rewarding!”

Maggine describes her post-grad campus visits as nostalgic. “It still feels like home but also feels like a lifetime ago. Almost a frozen-in-time kind of quality,” she says.

Luckily, living so close to campus, she has plenty of reasons to go back and visit, especially with her friends and family still nearby. “The people are really what makes ND,” she says.

You can connect with Melanie Maggine on LinkedIn . For more content about her time at Notre Dame, she has a YouTube channel where she documented her four years at the University.

USC football must find a sensible path forward for future scheduling

LOS ANGELES — Three months from tomorrow, USC will walk onto the field at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and kick off its 2024 season against LSU in a highly anticipated matchup with significant stakes for both programs.

It’s the Trojans’ most high-profile non- Notre Dame nonconference game since a home-and-home series with Texas in 2017 and 2018. It’s certainly exciting for Trojans fans who have witnessed few matchups like this since the Pete Carroll days when the program often played marquee opponents from outside its region.

It also might be a detriment to USC, which faces a brutal schedule that also includes a potential top-10 Notre Dame team, defending national champion Michigan as well as Penn State , which has finished in the top 15 the past two seasons.

There’s been a lot of noise about USC’s scheduling desires this week, including reports and speculation about whether it wanted to actually play the LSU game . Some believe the Trojans shouldn’t continue the Notre Dame series moving forward.

That’s good offseason fodder, but the simple reality is USC has to thoroughly evaluate how it wants to handle nonconference scheduling moving forward.

The Trojans find themselves in a tough spot. Nonconference games against teams like LSU drum up plenty of excitement for the fans and create great discussions over a long offseason. But the goal is to win a national championship and playing games like that when Notre Dame, which has been a top-15 program for the past decade, is already on the schedule only makes the path toward a potential College Football Playoff berth more difficult.

There’s some early evidence that USC’s current leadership, led by athletic director Jen Cohen, is already taking this into consideration. The program scheduled a home-and-home series with Ole Miss in the spring of 2020 — three-plus years before Cohen’s arrival — for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. USC and Ole Miss’ respective conference schedules have been dramatically altered since then — the Trojans have moved to the Big Ten while the Rebels’ league, the SEC, now includes Texas and Oklahoma . No official announcement has been made, but the series seems dead in the water.

“There are some matchups we have on the books that may not be around in the future. We may have some announcements coming shortly.” Keith Carter didn’t clarify which games, but the lingering scuttlebutt is that the USC home and home is mutually kaput. https://t.co/c6w8zYCdnP — Chase Parham (@ChaseParham) March 27, 2024

The incentive for playing such games is low these days. USC was still in the Pac-12 when it scheduled the LSU game and the Ole Miss series. Because the league faced perception issues, the Trojans needed to schedule those sorts of games. Now that USC is in the Big Ten, if it goes 9-3 or 10-2 in a given season, it’ll likely receive the benefit of the doubt and earn a Playoff bid. But what about 8-4? That likely won’t be good enough.

One alternative is scheduling tough nonconference games and examining the Notre Dame series — a hypothetical Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd brought up this week.

"I'm going to ask a question. Why does USC have to keep playing Notre Dame? College football punted on history last year." — @ColinCowherd pic.twitter.com/PojBgM9ZOY — Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) May 29, 2024

In theory, USC could play Notre Dame twice every four years, but that’s easier said than done. While the Trojans have bucked tradition recently — leaving the Pac-12 after a century in the conference — discontinuing that series would be one hell of a mess to navigate politically for any administration.

The two programs first played in 1926 and have taken breaks only for World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of now, the Trojans are under contract to play the Fighting Irish for only two more years, through 2026. But there is no indication that USC is interested in altering how often the rivalry is played, per program sources.

So it would be a surprise to see something happen with that series. It’s much easier to envision a different USC tradition coming to an end.

The Trojans are the last FBS program to never have played an FCS school. UCLA and Notre Dame, USC’s chief rivals, were part of that club, but the Bruins played Alabama State in 2022 while the Fighting Irish played Tennessee State in 2023.

Never playing an FCS program is a point of pride for a vocal segment of USC’s fan base. In 2019, the Trojans’ decision to schedule UC Davis for the 2021 season was met with some outcry — enough that then-athletic director Mike Bohn’s first move was to cancel that series and replace UC Davis with San Jose State .

That was at a different time for the program and the athletic department. Fans were extremely upset Clay Helton was still the head coach, and Bohn was a surprise hire who needed some political victories early in his tenure.

Current coach Lincoln Riley has much more support from the fan base — though another disappointing season could start testing that a bit — and Cohen’s hire was viewed much more positively than Bohn’s. So scheduling an FCS school may be easier to pull off now.

Just take a look at Riley and Cohen’s backgrounds as well. At Oklahoma, Riley played FCS programs later in his tenure, in 2019 and 2021, when he theoretically would’ve had more influence on the schedule. When Cohen was the athletic director at Washington, the Huskies followed a fairly straightforward scheduling model for nonconference games — one Power 5 program, one Group of 5 program and one FCS school.

Notre Dame essentially serves as the power-conference program on USC’s schedule, and the Trojans already have a Group of 5 oppponent scheduled for 2025 (Georgia Southern) 2026 (Fresno State), 2027 ( UNLV and Nevada) and 2028 (Fresno State). It wouldn’t be a shock if USC scheduled FCS programs to fill the gaps on the schedule and to make things a bit easier now that the program will be playing a more challenging conference slate.

Some fans would be upset, but everyone plays FCS programs. There isn’t a banner hanging in the Coliseum to commemorate the fact that the Trojans have never played an FCS school. It doesn’t go in the NCAA record books either.

USC’s stated goal is to win national championships. There’s a lot the program has to do in order to get there. Riley has to figure out the defensive side of the equation. The coaching staff needs to recruit better. The NIL setup has to continue to evolve and take positive steps forward. The program has to finish its facility upgrades.

Finding a sensible path forward with the schedule is another important part of the process.

Two new Trustees — Cathy Molnar and Ryan McInerney — have been elected to serve on the University of Notre Dame’s Board of Trustees, and Trustee Stephanie Gallo has been elected to the University’s Board of Fellows, effective July 1.

Cathy Molnar wearing white blazer and black top

Molnar is the executive director of CHS Management Group LLC, a single-family office. She has served previously as a shareholder and wealth manager at Wetherby Asset Management, as a vice president at Goldman Sachs and as a CPA at Ernst & Young.

Molnar holds an undergraduate degree in accounting from Notre Dame and a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Carey Law School. She has served on Notre Dame’s Provost’s Leadership Group, been involved with the University’s Women’s Investing Summit and assisted with the design of and served as a guest lecturer in a new MBA course at the Mendoza College of Business regarding family enterprises. Her husband, Mike, also earned an undergraduate degree from Notre Dame, and they have two children, one of whom is a current Notre Dame student.

Ryan McInerney wearing dark blazer and blue shirt

McInerney serves as the chief executive officer of Visa. Before being named CEO in February 2023, he served as the company’s president since 2013. Prior to joining Visa, he served as CEO of consumer banking for JPMorgan Chase, as well as other roles, and before that he was a principal at McKinsey and Company.

McInerney earned an undergraduate degree in finance from Notre Dame in 1997. He has served as a member of Notre Dame’s Undergraduate Experience Advisory Council since 2019 and is a member of the University’s For Good Cabinet. He and his wife, Angela, have three children.

Stephanie Gallo wearing black jacket and white top

Gallo has been a University Trustee since 2002 and is the chief marketing officer for GALLO, a family-owned company and global leader in the total alcohol beverage category. She earned a bachelor’s degree in government and international studies from Notre Dame and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. She and her husband, Chris Tyler, have two children, one of whom is a current student.

Composed of six laywomen and men and six priests of Notre Dame’s founding religious community, the Congregation of Holy Cross, the Board of Fellows is the University’s ultimate governing body. The Fellows elect the Trustees, adopt and amend the bylaws and are specifically charged with maintaining Notre Dame’s Catholic character.

Additionally, Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C., assumes the role of University president and John Veihmeyer becomes Board chair effective June 1. On Dec. 4, 2023, Father Dowd was elected Notre Dame’s 18th president by the University’s Board of Trustees after Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., announced he was stepping down to return to teaching and ministry after leading the University for 19 years. Veihmeyer, who is the retired chairman and CEO of KPMG and has served as vice Board chair since October 2023, succeeds John J. Brennan as Board chair.
