A Short Para on Cricket Match

Cricket is a game between two teams of eleven players. Each team bats once to score as many runs as possible, while the other team bowls to restrict the number of runs scored. Cricket is usually played on a circular or an oval field with a pitch placed in the middle of the field. The pitch has three sticks at each end, known as the wickets. The pitch is 22 yards in length. The bowler bowls from one end of the pitch while the batsman (striker) tries to hit the ball from the other end. There is another batsman (non-striker) waiting at the bowler’s end. The batsman scores the run by hitting the ball. The aim of the bowler is to get the batsman out while giving away the least runs possible. At the same time, the batsmen want to make as many runs as possible. The team which makes the most runs wins.

Some Renowned Cricketers and Their Contributions

Paragraph on Some renowned cricketers and their contributions should talk about cricketers of different times and eras. Initially, cricket was a sport dominated by players from British countries and their colonies. Back then famous cricketers were Don Bradman, Jack Hobbs, Jim Laker, and many more. Don Bradman continues to hold the record of highest average of 99.9 in a test match. Jim Laker was the first player to capture all 10 wickets in an inning in a test match and also capture 19 wickets in an inning.

a short essay on cricket

Cricket is played with a bat and ball and involves two competing sides (teams) of 11 players. The field is oval with a rectangular area in the middle, known as the pitch , that is 22 yards (20.12 metres) by 10 feet (3.04 metres) wide. Two sets of three sticks, called wickets , are set in the ground at each end of the pitch. Across the top of each wicket lie horizontal pieces called bails. The sides take turns at batting and bowling (pitching); each turn is called an “innings” (always plural). Sides have one or two innings each, depending on the prearranged duration of the match, the object being to score the most runs. The bowlers, delivering the ball with a straight arm, try to break (hit) the wicket with the ball so that the bails fall. This is one of several ways that the batsman is dismissed, or put out. A bowler delivers six balls at one wicket (thus completing an “over”), then a different player from his side bowls six balls to the opposite wicket. The batting side defends its wicket.

There are two batsman up at a time, and the batsman being bowled to (the striker) tries to hit the ball away from the wicket. A hit may be defensive or offensive. A defensive hit may protect the wicket but leave the batsmen no time to run to the opposite wicket. In that case the batsmen need not run, and play will resume with another bowl. If the batsman can make an offensive hit, he and the second batsman (the nonstriker) at the other wicket change places. Each time both batsmen can reach the opposite wicket, one run is scored. Providing they have enough time without being caught out and dismissed, the batsmen may continue to cross back and forth between the wickets, earning an additional run for each time both reach the opposite side. There is an outside boundary around the cricket field. A ball hit to or beyond the boundary scores four points if it hits the ground and then reaches the boundary, six points if it reaches the boundary from the air (a fly ball). The team with the highest number of runs wins a match. Should both teams be unable to complete their number of innings before the time allotted , the match is declared a draw. Scores in the hundreds are common in cricket.

Matches in cricket can range from informal weekend afternoon encounters on village greens to top-level international contests spread over five days in Test matches and played by leading professional players in grand stadiums.

During the 1st Nat West t20 cricket match between England women's team and West Indies women's and played at Emirate Riverside Cricket Ground, Durham.

Cricket is believed to have begun possibly as early as the 13th century as a game in which country boys bowled at a tree stump or at the hurdle gate into a sheep pen. This gate consisted of two uprights and a crossbar resting on the slotted tops; the crossbar was called a bail and the entire gate a wicket . The fact that the bail could be dislodged when the wicket was struck made this preferable to the stump , which name was later applied to the hurdle uprights. Early manuscripts differ about the size of the wicket, which acquired a third stump in the 1770s, but by 1706 the pitch—the area between the wickets—was 22 yards long.

The ball , once presumably a stone, has remained much the same since the 17th century. Its modern weight of between 5.5 and 5.75 ounces (156 and 163 grams) was established in 1774.

The primitive bat was no doubt a shaped branch of a tree, resembling a modern hockey stick but considerably longer and heavier. The change to a straight bat was made to defend against length bowling, which had evolved with cricketers in Hambledon, a small village in southern England. The bat was shortened in the handle and straightened and broadened in the blade, which led to forward play, driving, and cutting . As bowling technique was not very advanced during this period, batting dominated bowling through the 18th century.

The earliest reference to an 11-a-side match, played in Sussex for a stake of 50 guineas, dates from 1697. In 1709 Kent met Surrey in the first recorded intercounty match at Dartford , and it is probable that about this time a code of laws (rules) existed for the conduct of the game, although the earliest known version of such rules is dated 1744. Sources suggest that cricket was limited to the southern counties of England during the early 18th century, but its popularity grew and eventually spread to London , notably to the Artillery Ground, Finsbury, which saw a famous match between Kent and All-England in 1744. Heavy betting and disorderly crowds were common at matches.

The aforementioned Hambledon Club, playing in Hampshire on Broadhalfpenny Down, was the predominant cricket force in the second half of the 18th century before the rise of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in London. Formed from a cricket club that played at White Conduit Fields, the club moved to Lord’s Cricket Ground in St. Marylebone borough in 1787 and became the MCC and in the following year published its first revised code of laws. Lord’s, which was named after its founder, Thomas Lord, has had three locations over its history. Moving to the current ground in St. John’s Wood in 1814, Lord’s became the headquarters of world cricket.

In 1836 the first match of North counties versus South counties was played, providing clear evidence of the spread of cricket. In 1846 the All-England XI, founded by William Clarke of Nottingham , began touring the country, and from 1852, when some of the leading professionals (including John Wisden, who later compiled the first of the famous Wisden almanacs on cricketing) seceded to form the United All-England XI, these two teams monopolized the best cricket talent until the rise of county cricket. They supplied the players for the first English touring team overseas in 1859.

500 Words Essay On A Cricket Match

Cricket is the second-most popular sport in the world. There are 2.5 billion cricket fans worldwide, spread across 180 nations. The ICC Cricket World Cup is the most viewed cricket event. The governing body in charge of planning world cup competitions for international cricket is the International Cricket Council (ICC).

History Of Cricket

Cricket originated in England as a sport for royals in the 16th century; later, during the colonial period, it was adapted by the rajas and nawabs of India as they came into contact with the British. Eventually, the royals of India started organising matches for their own entertainment in which common people were allowed to participate, which started the enthusiasm for this sport in the country.

How It Is Played

In cricket, two teams of 11 players face off against each other, one batting and one bowling and fielding. The batting and bowling teams are chosen through a coin toss. The field is circular to oval, with the main batting and bowling taking place in the middle of the field, involving two batsmen from one team and a bowler and wicket-keeper from the opposing team, while the remaining nine players hold the ground to prevent the batsmen from scoring. There are two umpires on the ground who judge the decisions.

Cricket In India

In India, cricket is more of a festival than a sport; some even call it a religion. From young to old, men and women, everybody is a fan of cricket in our country. The players that represent our country at the international level and our states and schools at the national and regional level are paid so much respect by everybody. The fanaticism of cricket is so deep that if you ask a child what he wants to be when he grows up, the obvious answer will be that he wants to play cricket.

My Experience Of A Cricket Match

Recently, an inter-school tournament was held, and we got the chance to see our team play. The stadium was packed with both our team's and the opposing team's supporters. Everybody was cheering for their teams.

The Game | The game began with a coin toss to determine which team would bat first. Our team won the toss and chose to bat first, and the opponent team bowled first. Both teams were on the ground as the game began, and on the very first ball, our team captain, who was the opening player, hit a six, and the ball flew out of the boundary. This continued throughout the game; whenever a batsman hit a six or four, the entire stadium and cricket ground erupted in raucous cheers from the crowd.

The Excitement | The match was exciting because it had ups and downs; players got clean hits; there were catches; sneak runs; boundaries; everything enthralled the audience. Even the bowling part of our team was much more exciting than the batting part. Our team scored 150 runs and was successful in stopping the opposing team at 120 runs, so we won. The players were appreciated a lot, and everybody talked about the game for more than a week. The team members later got awarded by our principal and the chief guest.

Contesting over a piece of land, John Derrick, who was a coroner by profession, testified that he used to play cricket on that piece of land with his mates, almost 50 years back. Obviously, he didn’t invent the game and it was probably being played before that time.

Amid all the uncertainty regarding the origin of cricket, one thing is certain that it was originated before 1550, probably played by the children in south-east England.

Initially, during the late 16th-century cricket was played by the children over a piece of land cleared by cattle grazing. In the coming century, it became popular and was now also played by adults.

The earliest known proper match was held at Circa, England in 1611. Evidence is also found to substantiate that in the next 11 years at least 30 matches were played between recognized teams.

With the invention of the newspaper industry, cricket gained more popularity during the 18 th century. Gradually, the players started getting popular and became huge crowd pullers. Today, the popularity of cricket has reached its pinnacle with over 2.5 billion fans throughout the world.

Teams around the World

As of August 2022, there are 108 ICC members including 12 full members and 96 associate members.

All full member nations are qualified to play ODIs (One Day International) and the Twenty20. The 12 full member countries, in the increasing order of their year of membership, are – South Africa (1909), England (1909), Australia (1909), West Indies (1926), New Zealand (1926), India (1926), Pakistan (1952), Sri Lanka (1981), Zimbabwe (1992), Bangladesh (2000), Afghanistan (2017) and Ireland (2017).

Associate members, a group of 96 countries are eligible to play ICC World Cricket League. However, there are certain prerequisites for a country to qualify as an associate member. Firstly it must have at least 16 senior and 16 junior teams and secondly, it must have an access to at least 8 cricket grounds with 4 of them as permanent pitch.

Beginning as a ball and stick game played by the village children in England, some five centuries ago; cricket has progressed immensely in popularity. Though the rules and techniques of the game have evolved over years, the basic form of the game has stood the test of time and remains mostly unaltered.

Essay on Cricket

Essay generator.

Cricket, more than just a sport, is a passion that unites millions worldwide. Originating in England, it has evolved into a global phenomenon, revered across continents. This essay delves into cricket’s essence, exploring its history, rules, formats, and the profound impact it has on its aficionados and nations.

History and Evolution

The origins of cricket can be traced back to England in the late 16th century. Initially a children’s game, it gradually gained popularity among adults, becoming the national sport of England by the 18th century. The formation of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 1787 marked a significant milestone, as it established the first standardized rules. Cricket’s legacy is a testament to its adaptability and enduring appeal, having spread from the British Empire to the rest of the world.

The Basic Rules of Cricket

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players each. The game’s objective is to score more runs than the opponent. It unfolds on a circular field, at the center of which lies the pitch—a 22-yard-long strip. The match begins with a coin toss to decide which team bats or bowls first.

A team’s innings involves two batsmen at the pitch, aiming to score runs by hitting the ball bowled at them, while the fielding team tries to limit these runs and dismiss the batsmen. The bowler delivers the ball overarm from one end of the pitch to the batsman at the other. Runs are scored by hitting the ball and running between the wickets or by hitting the ball to the boundary.

Key to the game are the methods of dismissal, such as being bowled, caught, leg before wicket (LBW), run out, and stumped. Each team takes turns to bat and field, and the match’s outcome is decided by the total runs scored.

Formats of the Game

Cricket is celebrated in various formats, each offering a unique blend of strategy, skill, and duration:

  • Test Cricket : The oldest and most traditional form, Test cricket, epitomizes the game’s strategic depth. Played over five days, it allows for the ebb and flow of fortunes, demanding endurance, skill, and resilience.
  • One Day International (ODI) : Introduced in the 1970s, ODI cricket is a one-day format with 50 overs per side. It strikes a balance between the enduring test of skills and the need for a quicker outcome, making it immensely popular.
  • Twenty20 (T20) : The latest format, T20 cricket, condenses the game into 20 overs per side, creating a fast-paced, explosive version of the game that has attracted a new generation of fans and players alike.

The Significance of Major Tournaments

Cricket’s allure is magnified by its prestigious tournaments, which showcase the sport’s highest levels of competition and camaraderie:

  • The Cricket World Cup : Held every four years, this pinnacle of ODI cricket determines the world champion, drawing teams and fans from across the globe.
  • The T20 World Cup : Reflecting the modern game’s dynamism, this tournament crowns the world’s best in the shortest format, highlighting cricket’s evolution.
  • The Ashes : A series steeped in history, The Ashes epitomize the fierce but respectful rivalry between England and Australia, dating back to 1882.

Impact and Influence

Cricket’s impact transcends the boundaries of the field, influencing cultures, economies, and societies:

  • Cultural Integration : Cricket has been a unifying force, bringing together diverse nations and fostering a sense of national pride and identity.
  • Economic Contributions : Major tournaments significantly impact host countries’ economies, generating revenue through tourism, broadcasting rights, and merchandise.
  • Social Influence : Cricket heroes are revered, their conduct both on and off the field inspiring young aspirants. Charitable activities and social campaigns led by cricketers have further cemented the sport’s role in societal development.

Cricket is not just a sport; it’s a celebration of endurance, skill, and unity. From its humble beginnings to the global stage, cricket has woven itself into the fabric of societies, embodying the spirit of competition and camaraderie. As it continues to evolve, cricket remains a testament to human spirit and ingenuity, captivating hearts and inspiring millions around the world to strive for excellence, both on and off the field. For students participating in essay writing competitions, understanding cricket’s multifaceted nature offers a rich tapestry of themes to explore, from historical evolution and rules to its profound impact on global culture and society.

September 22, 2019 by Study Mentor 1 Comment

The whole family would gather around the T.V. when the Indian team would be playing. Everything from our favorite batsman hitting a six, to the anticipation of the last overs, made the whole cricket watching experience enjoyable.

It is a major sport of our country, with the cricketers being treated as no less than celebrities. Every kid could name most if not all of the top 11 players of the cricket team. It is phenomenon that has swept the country since it was first introduced.

India has produced many legends in the game of cricket, considered as among the international bests and greatest.

A Brief History

England was the birthplace of the sport of cricket. The exact year or date of its inception has yet to be documented.

It is speculated that the first reference to the sport of cricket can be traced back to 13th where a document refers to an incident where a game of ‘cricket’ was played. It was earlier observed that cricket was initially a game played only by children.

Then reported adults started playing it as it seemed pretty interesting and exciting. The earliest of cricket matches was played between parishes in a village and teams of unknown number of players.

A newspaper report from the 1600’s, tells of a cricket game of high significance and having 11 players on each side. This is one of the oldest documented instances of a high profile game in cricket history.

Important facts and figures

This  game universally consists of two teams that comprise of 11 members each who play the field. A toss is carried out at the start of the match, to determine which team gets to make the choice between batting and fielding.

A normal match consists of 13 players present on the field. 11 players from the bowling side and 2 players from the batting side.

Substitutes are also present who are used when a player is injured or cannot play. But the limitations are that a substitute cannot bowl, act as captain or Bat. He can only hold the role of a fieldsman.

cricket essay

A size of a field varies with the location and the size of the stadium. There are as such no fixed dimensions for the size and shape of the field but its diameter usually varies between 450 feet (137 m) and 500 feet (150 m).

Cricket is one of the few major sports that do not require its field to be of a constant specified size or predetermined shape. One thing that is mandatory to be maintained is the pitch, rectangular patch in the middle of the cricket field where the batman and bowler interact.

It is predetermined the wickets, a pair of 3 wooden stumps will wooden bails balanced on top of them, be placed 22 yards apart from each other. The Batsman stands on one end and the bowler and the umpire on the other.

Spirit of the Game

We bleed blue! Is a common slogan every Indian knows about? It represents the amount of respect, dedication and passion we have for the sport of cricket.

Great players like, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly , Mahindra Singh Dhoni , Virat Kholi are household names that Indians will not forget for a long, long time. There people so passionate about the game, that never miss their beloved country’s game, even if it means they have to fly abroad for watching it.

We also are very defensive about our cricketers, which lead to disputes and arguments with those who don’t watch cricket.

But the love for the game takes a wrong turn, when fans get unnecessarily heated up over a loss, for example, when the cricketer Yuvraj Singh failed to perform well in a world cup match, which inadvertently lead India losing the match, frenzied fans took to shouting slogans and throwing rocks at the cricketer’s house.

This was a wrong and shameful act from cricket fans, and greatly shunned by people all over the country. Despite how our team performs, or if we win or lose, every Indian is proud of the passion we have for this game.

Short Paragraph on Cricket

Cricket is my favourite game and Sachin Tendulkar is my ideal star. Though I like to play badminton, table tennis, and volleyball too. But they are all secondary for me.

Cricket started first in England. Later this game spread too many other countries of the world, including India , Pakistan , Australia , New Zealand , South Africa , Kenya and Bangladesh .

In a cricket team, there are eleven players. The team has a captain and a vice-captain and a vice-captain. There are two kinds of cricket matches- a test match and a one-day match. In a one day match, each team plays fifty overs.

Each over has six balls and bowler can bowl a maximum of ten overs. The captain, who wins the toss, decides whether his team will bowl first to bat.

Test matches are played for five days. In a test match, both team as; have to play two innings to get the result. But five days are not enough to play two innings. So, most of the test matches end in a draw.

Last Saturday, our school cricket team played a one-day match against the team of Holy cross School. I was member of my school team. Our captain, Mr. Rohit, won the toss and decided to bat first. We made a big score 250 runs. The team Holy cross was all out at the score of 183 runs.

We won the match by 67 runs with a huge margin. Our captain, who is best bowler of our team, bowled out four players and was declared the Man of the Match.

The game of cricket is really exciting and fascinating. It keeps the spectators spell-bound. Those who cannot make it to the stadium enjoy the game on their television set.

I wish I play in an international match of cricket from India one day, or the other.

Professionally, a cricket match consists of two competing teams with their playing eleven. The matches are set in a stadium filled with crowd, commentators, umpires and cameras for their live telecast. There are different formats and championships for the game including:

  • Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20 Internationals which are unlimited, 50 and 20 over matches respectively
  • There are many teams from across the continents representing their own country
  • Distinguished cricket tournaments include the World Cup played after every 4 years in both 20 and 50 over formats, the Ashes played between the cricket teams of England and Australia, Tri-series played by three nations and the Asia Cup played between India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Paragraph on Cricket – 250 to 300 Words for Classes 9, 10, 11, 12 and Competitive Exams

Initially popular as the “Gentleman’s Game,” cricket, over the years has emerged as a sport beyond the borders of gender, race and countries. Every time we hear words like “How was that?” or “Bowled out,” we can only think of the heartbeats, the cheering, the pressure and the amazement of a cricket match.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) governs matches globally whereas the rules of the game are laid down in a code called Laws of Cricket. Every cricket match is played between two teams of 15 players out of which the best and fittest 11 play the match. The match equipment including bat’s weight, usage of the ball, wicket dimensions, position of umpires, etc. are strictly monitored on the field.

The format has changed considerably with matches in both limited and unlimited overs. In addition to large scale tournaments like the World Cup, country-based premier leagues such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), Big Bash League (BBL) and Champions League (CLT20) have gained popularity. The major national team rivalries in cricket are seen between England and Australia, India and Pakistan, South Africa and England with nail-biting matches.

Although cricket is not the national game of India, it is definitely the most followed and played. The Men’s national team has won the cricket world cup in all formats under the leadership of captains like Kapil Dev and M.S. Dhoni. The Women’s national team is prospering and has reached world cup finals with players like Mithali Raj, Smriti Mandhana, Jhulan Goswami and so on. Even the under 19 and blind cricket teams of India have brought home several trophies.

Since cricket, as a sport drives so many emotions, it is the responsibility of every player to keep its spirit alive. Gambling and illegal practices must completely be stopped in the game. Cricket should be cherished as the childhood dream and adulthood celebration if not reality of a thousand hearts!

India Wins Cricket World Cup, Stamping Its Domination of the Sport

In India, cricket has become immensely profitable and a destination for the world’s best players. But a tournament victory had eluded it for many years.

Ticker tape rains down as the India team, in orange and blue uniforms and medals round their necks, wave and cheer and hold a trophy aloft.

By Mujib Mashal

Reporting from New Delhi

India won the men’s Cricket World Cup on Saturday, defeating South Africa to end a dry spell in tournament victories that had lasted over a decade, even as the nation was dominating the sport globally in other measures like talent, cash and influence.

The tournament was played across several Caribbean islands, with a few of the matches hosted in the United States, including at a pop-up stadium in New York. When the final, in Barbados, ended with India declared the champion, it was close to midnight back home, where joyful crowds poured into the streets across several cities.

“Maybe in a couple hours it will sink in, but it is a great feeling,” said Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, who took a tour of the stadium with his daughter propped on his shoulders to thank the crowd. “To cross the line — it feels great for everyone.”

It was a closely fought match, and a deeply emotional one for India, in part because many of its senior players, including Sharma, 37, were near the end of their careers. India last won the World Cup in T20, the shortest format of cricket, in 2007, when Sharma was just getting started. The top prize had also evaded Virat Kohli, 35, one of cricket’s most recognized icons. Rahul Dravid, India’s coach, had never won a World Cup during his long and illustrious career as a player.

All three men ended the night on a happy note, with Sharma and Kohli announcing their retirement from the fast-paced short form of the game. Dravid, who finished his stint as India’s coach, is normally a quiet, stoic presence. But after the win, he was screaming and celebrating.

The team’s rise is extraordinary given the chaos embroiling Afghanistan over the past four and a half decades, as well as how international sporting success usually requires deep cultural roots and sophisticated domestic structures. Within the span of around 15 years, Afghanistan has gone from the lower echelons of the cricketing world – playing Division 5 with Vanuatu and Mozambique – to comfortably beating heavyweights Australia and New Zealand in recent weeks.

Afghanistan’s trajectory has been a byproduct of their recent troubled history. Following the United States-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 and the initial ouster of the Taliban, refugees from the previous Soviet invasion came flowing back into Afghanistan from Pakistan. Having been exposed to the cricket-mad streets of Peshawar, they brought with them not just a love of the game, but the desire to embed it as part of Afghanistan’s culture.

They have been extraordinarily successful. Cricket has now become the country’s most popular sport , and it is the only sport in which Afghanistan can compete at the elite level. While soccer is also popular, Afghanistan’s men’s team currently ranks a lowly 151st and is unlikely to qualify for that sport’s World Cup any time soon.

However, the return of the Taliban complicated Afghanistan’s ability to navigate cricket’s international framework, despite the team’s recent success. While the Taliban have realized that aligning with the men’s cricket team can bring their government greater domestic legitimacy, they outlawed the game for women upon returning to power. This has created problems for how Afghanistan plays bilateral series against other countries.

It is a requirement for membership of the International Cricket Council (ICC) that “ satisfactory women’s pathway structures [are] in place.” Currently the ICC is overlooking this provision given the extraordinary circumstances in Afghanistan, stating that it “will not penalize the [Afghanistan Cricket Board], or its players for abiding by the laws set by the government of their country.”

However, both Australia and England have disagreed with the ICC’s position and refused to play Afghanistan outside of multilateral events like the T20 World Cup. Both have cited the deteriorating conditions for women and girls in the country, and Afghanistan Cricket Board’s inability to field a women’s team. Technically, the Afghanistan women’s cricket team still exists in exile in Australia , although it lacks the support of the Afghanistan Cricket Board.

It remains to be seen whether Australia and England’s position can create enough pressure for the Taliban to change their behavior. Given their ideological fervor, it seems unlikely. And with the Afghanistan team’s ascent, pressure might flow the other way on Australia and England to relinquish their position and organize games against Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan cricket team exists in an odd position in relation to the current Taliban government. Due to Taliban rule lacking international recognition – and no sporting ground in the world willing to fly the Taliban’s flag – the team still represents the fallen Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and uses its flag and national anthem, rather than the symbols of the Taliban-led Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

This may also be a sign of hope – for that is what the Afghanistan cricket team represents at the moment . For many young Afghan men, cricket is seen as the only real career opportunity out of poverty, as success can bring financial reward beyond the imaginations of most Afghans. Players receive around $3,600 per game played at the T20 World Cup, as well as being paid a monthly salary of between $1,200 and $3,300. In a country where the GDP per capita is $355 per year, this is money that can transform a family’s opportunities.

Alongside this, there is the opportunity to play in the international leagues. Eight players in the current Afghan squad have contracts with teams in the highly lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL).  The country’s captain, Rashid Khan, earned $1.8 million for this year’s IPL season – an astonishing sum for anyone for just two month’s work.

With the success of these cricket players there needs to be an acknowledgement of what they have achieved in such a short period of time within an extraordinarily difficult political landscape. There is resilience and determination on display in their efforts, as well as a natural skill and flair for the game. The hope has to be that one day the country’s women will have the freedom to emulate that success.

How India Defeated South Africa In T20 World Cup 2024 Final - Five Turning Points

Star all-rounder hardik pandya provided india with crucial breakthroughs throughout the match to help them defend 176 against south africa in the t20 world cup 2024 final..

a short essay on cricket

The Indian cricket team ended their 11-year wait for an ICC trophy after they defeated South Africa by seven runs in a thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 final at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on June 29, 2024. India and South Africa named an unchanged playing XI after captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first. India got off to a flying start as openers Rohit and Virat Kohli added 23 runs before Keshav Maharaj removed the Indian captain (9) in the second over.

The Men in Blue then suffered massive blows as Rishabh Pant (0) and Suryakumar Yadav (3) departed in quick succession.

Kohli (76) later stitched crucial partnerships with Axar Patel (47) and Shivam Dube (27) to propel India to 176/7 in their 20 overs.

Defending 176, Jasprit Bumrah provided India an early breakthrough as he cleaned up Reeza Hendricks (4) with a sensational delivery.

Arshdeep Singh later bagged the huge wicket of captain Aiden Markram (4) to reduce South Africa to 12/2.

Wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock (39) and Tristan Stubbs (31) then stitched a crucial 58-run stand to bring the Proteas back into the game.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel ended the partnership as he castled Stubbs (31) before Arshdeep removed de Kock (39).

Batting at No.5, Heinrich Klaasen later slammed a blitzkrieg fifty to put South Africa in a great position.

However, Hardik Pandya dismissed Klaasen (52) in the 17th over to change the fortune in India's favour.

At the other end, Bumrah continued his brilliant spell as he removed Marco Jansen (2).

As South Africa needed 16 off the final over, Pandya bagged the huge wicket of David Miller (21) courtesy of an incredible catch by Suryakumar Yadav.

Pandya later kept his calm to guide India to their second T20 World Cup title.

With a nail-biting win, we take a look at five points that helped India clinch the T20 World Cup in the West Indies.

Jasprit Bumrah's match-defining spell

Jasprit Bumrah produced a spell for the ages to help India clinch their second T20 World Cup title after 17 years. With 30 required off 30 balls, Rohit Sharma once again showed his faith in Bumrah. The India's bowling spearhead responded as he conceded just four runs in the 16th over and later gave away only two runs in the 18th over including picking up Jansen's wicket to pull things for the Men in Blue. Bumrah ended with figures of 4-0-18-2 to guide India to the coveted title.

Suryakumar Yadav's stunning catch

Suryakumar Yadav took a breathtaking catch in the final over of the T20 World Cup 2024 final as he played a pivotal role in helping India clinch the title. As South Africa needed 16 off the final six deliveries, Pandya removed the dangerous David Miller after he miscued a huge hit over long off. Suryakumar later produced an incredible fielding effort to help dismiss Miller and claim a crucial wicket.

Axar Patel's all-round effort

Axar Patel was one of the standout performers for India in their thrilling win over South Africa. Reeling at 34/3, Axar stitched an important partnership with Kohli to bring India back into the game. Axar and Kohli forged a 72-run stand for the fourth wicket before he departed in an unfortunate run-out. The southpaw scored 47 off 31 balls, laced with one four and four sixes. Later, Axar also contributed with the bowl and claimed the huge wicket of Tristan Stubbs.

Virat Kohli's match-winning fifty

Virat Kohli played another match-winning knock as he helped India post a fighting total at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. While Kohli was short on runs heading into the final, the Indian talisman once again rose to the occasion when the team needed the most. After India were reduced to 34/3, Kohli established important partnerships with Axar and Dube to guide India to over 170. Kohli scored 59-ball 76 which included six fours and two sixes.

Hardik Pandya's crucial spell

Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya provided India with crucial breakthroughs throughout the match to help them defend 176 against South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2024 final. After the Indian spin duo of Axar Patel (1/49) and Kuldeep Yadav (0/45) were expensive on the day, the Rohit Sharma-led side needed someone to step up with the ball. Hardik was given the responsibility and he grabbed it with both hands. The right-arm pacer first bagged the massive wicket of Heinrich Klaasen and later removed David Miller and Kagiso Rabada in the final over of the game to finish with figures of 3-0-20-3. Hardik's impressive spell was one of the standout performances that guided India to their second T20 World Cup title after 17 years.
