  • Using Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) data, we factored student completion rates into our algorithm.
  • We also made sure to include data on acceptance rates and earnings for education doctorate graduates from each school.
  • Finally, we considered positive signals across these categories. Schools that only did well in one area didn’t necessarily make our rankings. Instead, schools that did well across the board earned the highest scores.

An Ed.D. program can be challenging to get into—you’ll need to draw upon all your professional and academic credentials to make it through the admissions process. Ed.D. degrees at well-known schools are highly competitive; even less competitive doctorates in education are intended for well-prepared candidates who have already accomplished a great deal academically. Here’s how to make sure you’re one of those candidates.

Typical Ed.D. Admission Requirements

  • Master’s Degree: Ed.D. programs generally require students to have earned at least a master’s degree (or an equivalent number of graduate credits). However, the master’s degree does not necessarily need to be in education. If you already hold an Ed.S. degree, you are often eligible for advanced placement.
  • Minimum GPA: Where a minimum GPA is specified, an overall 3.0 (B) or higher is generally preferred.
  • Work Experience: If you’ve never worked in the field of education before, it may limit your options. Because the Ed.D. is a practical degree intended for mid-career professionals, at least 3 years of relevant work experience is generally required. This is not always the case—Nova Southeastern University’s Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership is a notable exception—but it’s the norm.
  • Letters of Recommendation & Personal Essay: You’re going to need at least two letters of recommendation; most programs also require a personal essay (the format of the personal essay varies widely from program to program). Applicants often treat these two requirements as an afterthought. But in highly competitive programs, the identities of the people writing your letters of recommendation, and the content of your personal essay, can be the most important parts of your application.
  • GRE Scores Optional: If you hate the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), we have good news: many Ed.D. programs will accept the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) as a substitute for the GRE. Ed.D. Admissions Interview

In competitive Ed.D. degrees, it is common for the school to conduct an interview with a prospective Ed.D. student prior to accepting an application. This interview is sometimes conducted online.

In most cases, the purpose of the interview is more to check in with the student — verifying the person’s identity and identifying any obvious red flags — rather than a decisive part of the process. But if the Ed.D. program you’re applying for is especially competitive, we recommend you speak to students and alumni to get a sense of what might be expected.

Ed.D. Admissions Essay

For the doctorate in education, some schools also require an admissions essay, though the format can vary. Maryville Ed.D.’s personal statement essay is fairly complex, requiring both a detailed autobiography and a short dissertation proposal, whereas Northern Arizona University merely asks you to provide a writing sample where you summarize an article in your own words. But whether the required admissions essay is simple or complex, it’s likely to be short.

  • Some schools require a high minimum GPA (e.g. 3.0-3.5) and some don’t.

Since there are no universally accepted admission requirements, it’s wise to make a shortlist of regionally accredited Ed.D. programs and go from there.

Ed.D. Dissertation, Dissertation in Practice (DiP) or Capstone

All Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) programs will contain a large, research-based project. Some Ed.D. degrees opt for a traditional dissertation along the lines of a Ph.D. Other Ed.D. programs contain a Dissertation in Practice (DiP) or capstone project.

Traditional Dissertation

  • Doctorates in education that require a traditional dissertation include classes to assist students with each of the steps required to write one (e.g. how to come up with a dissertation topic, how to structure the dissertation, and how to conduct effective research).
  • After the dissertation is planned, proposed, and written, the final step is defending it. Typically, an Ed.D. committee will read the student’s dissertation, and—on a set date—faculty members will ask questions of the student to ensure they fully understand the focus area of their dissertation.
  • Questions will be open-ended so that Ed.D. students must think critically about their work. The thought of defending a thesis can be stressful, but students are given months to prepare. And committees generally want students to succeed, not fail!

DiP or Capstone Project

Northeastern University’s online Doctor of Education program provides experienced adult learners, working professionals, and scholar-practitioners from diverse backgrounds and perspectives with the practical knowledge and experience they need to transform the learning landscape. Students gain innovative approaches to create authentic change in their communities. The program was selected as the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate's Program of the Year for 2022-2023.

The Doctor of Education program is designed to be completed in three to four years of study—following a fast-paced quarter system in lieu of a traditional semester format. Students choose from five concentrations to create a curriculum that matches personal and professional interests. The program's dissertation in practice process will begin at the onset of your coursework as you identify your problem of practice and develop an action plan—incorporating cycles of data collection and analysis, collaboration, change work, and reflection—culminating in the dissemination of your action research findings. Our students come from diverse disciplines and professions, seeking more than just a degree. You'll gain a practical education that translates to your everyday working environment.

While all EdD courses can be completed online (except for hybrid courses in Seattle and Charlotte), annual in-person two-day residencies are held on campus. Residencies focus on networking and tools for career success and allow you to connect with faculty and fellow scholars to share knowledge and experience. You'll attend residencies* in your first and second years of the program at one of our campuses in Boston, Charlotte, or Seattle.

The Northeastern Doctor of Education degree is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) and was selected as Program of the Year by the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate Program for 2022-2023.

  • You'll begin dissertation in practice work at the onset of your program. You'll select a compelling educational/organizational challenge and will be assigned a faculty advisor to support your research throughout the program.
  • All coursework is online—providing flexibility for working professionals. Your residencies will be fulfilled in person*, at one of our campuses in Boston, Charlotte, or Seattle.
  • You'll learn alongside faculty practitioners—engaging with respected leaders who contribute to the field as authors, journal editors, school board members, bloggers, and podcasters.

  • Higher Education Administration: The higher education administration concentration provides an opportunity for experienced higher education professionals to expand their previous understanding of practices within all sectors of postsecondary education—and also advance their professional practice by developing and deepening their understanding of the roles of colleges and universities in our society. Sectors examined include community colleges, four-year colleges, for-profit institutions, and research universities.
  • Innovative Teaching and Learning: The innovative teaching and learning concentration focuses on transforming education through innovation, justice, and policy, by providing engaging opportunities for current and aspiring teaching and learning specialists working in various education spaces. The concentration focuses on teaching and learning both inside and outside the bounds of P-20 schools and focuses on developing and leading innovative curricula as well as professional development.
  • Transformative School Leadership: The transformative school leadership concentration provides innovative opportunities for experienced education professionals who are current and aspiring leaders of early childhood centers, public or private schools, or school districts. The concentration prepares students to lead and transform educational spaces and be equipped to shape the needs of education in K-12, higher education, organizational contexts, and beyond.
  • Workplace Learning: The workplace learning concentration helps professionals gain a deeper understanding of, recognize, and influence real-life social inequalities faced by marginalized populations in the workplace. Courses allow students to advance their professional practice by developing and deepening their knowledge of workplace learning, organizational dynamics, learning strategy, and ethics.
  • Integrative Studies: The integrative studies concentration provides an opportunity for students to design a program of study that fits their own professional goals and includes the required foundation and research courses, concentration courses from any EdD concentration, and electives from the Doctor of Education or Doctor of Law and Policy programs.

Our Ph.D. program critically engages students in contemporary issues that impact education research, policy and practice.  Emphasizing collaboration, the program is an interdisciplinary graduate group that draws its faculty from diverse fields of education, humanities, social science, physical and biological sciences, mathematics, and medicine, and engages with key campus centers and programs, such as the M.I.N.D. Institute and the Poverty Center.

Program Breakdown

OU Online’s Doctor of Education in Education Administration program is structured to prepare students for job advancement and leadership by cultivating a deeper understanding of challenges in today’s educational settings. Students will learn how to lead change in their careers and gain the tools necessary to make positive and lasting changes in the organizations and educational settings in which they interact.

The program hosts monthly coffee chats each Friday where students can network with faculty and industry leaders. After completing year two, students will have the option to attend an immersion experience on campus.

This program offers two tracks – PK-12 Educational Leadership or Higher Education Leadership. Students can begin their curriculum in summer or fall terms. Courses will contain both asynchronous and synchronous components. Synchronous sessions are optional and will be recorded for playback.

How to Apply

Admissions to the online Doctor of Education in Education Administration are selective. To be considered, you must have a conferred master’s degree from an accredited institution.

To apply, students must:

  • Provide official college transcripts from all institutions for both undergraduate and graduate degrees
  • Background on the setting (e.g., school district, higher education institution, or non-profit organization)
  • Description of the problem of the practice
  • Importance of your problem of practice
  • It is understood that the dissertation topic/interests may change, so you are not locked into this proposal if you are accepted into the program.  
  • International students must demonstrate English proficiency.

The admissions committee operates under a rolling admissions process, and admissions may continue until two weeks before classes start. The program strives to respond to applicants within one week of submitting a completed application.

School of education.

The School of Education will pause admission to the Doctor of Philosophy in Education (PhD) program for the 2025-26 academic year while we add several programmatic improvements. The next intake for admission to the PhD program will be for students who want to matriculate in the Fall 2026 semester. The online application will open in August 2025 to begin accepting submissions, and the application completion deadline will be December 16, 2025.

The overarching goal of the School of Education’s PhD in Education program is to develop scholars who will have advanced research skills for improving education practice, with specific emphases on policy analysis and education improvement. The program strives to prepare candidates that are equipped to:

  • meet the myriad challenges associated with systemic education change;
  • apply exceptional content area expertise contextualized within a comprehensive multidisciplinary frame of reference;
  • successfully bridge the theory and research to evidence-based practice gap;
  • be actively involved in public policy development and evaluation;
  • conduct research on complex databases linking educational practices to student outcomes, or lead laboratory- or school-based research programs that inform efforts to improve educational practices and student outcomes; and
  • develop national models of educational practice that guide curriculum development and educator preparation.

Admission Requirements

At minimum, applicants to the PhD program should hold a master’s degree from an accredited college or university. Previous degrees must document outstanding academic achievement in an area of study closely associated with the objectives of the program. Applicants must submit the online admission application form, application fee, and official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. If the earned degree or credit is from an educational institution abroad, the candidate’s academic record must be evaluated by a credential evaluation agency before consideration for admission. Applicants are required to earn superior scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (taken within the past five years), present acceptable TOEFL or IELTS scores (if an international student), and demonstrate potential to become top scholars. Additionally, applicants are required to submit a curriculum vitae, a personal statement (outlining professional plans, goals, and expectations related to the PhD program), dispositions survey, and three letters of reference affirming the applicant’s qualifications for advanced graduate study and potential for professional development in the field. Selected applicants who meet the entrance requirements will be invited to interview with the doctoral admissions committee.

In addition to successfully completing all the coursework requirements, candidates must also satisfy the following program benchmarks:

Each student will receive an annual written evaluation from the School of Education’s Doctoral Studies Committee detailing their progress in meeting the required benchmarks at the end of each spring semester.

All School of Education PhD students will devote at least four years to full-time study and research as a resident student. This period of time will provide opportunity for full engagement and participation in the academic community and allow students to develop and demonstrate the scholarly capabilities required of the degree. The typical program of study is eight semesters, with six semesters devoted to coursework and research/teaching intensive experiences and two semesters devoted primarily to independent dissertation research. Students will typically enroll in 12 hours per semester for the first three years of their program and 9 hours per semester during the fourth year of their program, for a total of 90 credit hours. All students are expected to maintain enrollment as full-time graduate students over the course of the program. With the approval of their major adviser and director of the PhD program, students may transfer up to 12 credit hours of previously completed graduate-level coursework to substitute for selected required courses in the program.

Typically, each year four-to-eight PhD students will be admitted each year to begin classes in the fall semester. The majority of required courses will be delivered on the Baltimore Homewood campus in a face-to-face format, although students may (with approval) enroll in selected elective courses in divisions throughout the university.

Students must complete qualifying exams after completing two years of study. The successful completion of the written documents and oral defense of those documents allows the student to proceed to the dissertation proposal.

Dissertation

The program is designed as an apprenticeship model leading to a traditional research dissertation. The expectation is that students will be developing the skills and background knowledge throughout the program required to pursue a traditional research dissertation. Although the dissertation is not part of the formal coursework, the program is designed to put a student on track to develop an area of expertise as the foundation for an independent research project directed by the adviser. Students are expected to complete and defend a dissertation proposal by the end of the third year of study and use the final year of the program to complete and defend the dissertation. The dissertation is expected to demonstrate mastery of the relevant literature and scholarship in the collection and interpretation of data. The work should be appropriate for publication in high impact journals in the student’s area of expertise. The dissertation will be presented at a final oral defense before the student’s Dissertation Advisory Committee.

EdD in Teaching & Curriculum

Chapter 4 – Ph.D. Programs

The Iowa State University School of Education Ph.D. in Education is bound by a commitment to preparing graduates who engage in methodologically rigorous, substantively rich, and socially meaningful work in the field of education. This document outlines the milestones in the Ph.D. program in Education and situates these in the process of pursuing the degree. It is intended to provide guidance to doctoral students and School of Education faculty.

4.1 – Coursework for the Ph.D.

The Ph.D. program is designed to offer students both the rigorous methodological preparation required to undertake educational inquiry at the highest levels and the flexibility for students to work with their Program of Study Committees (POSCs) to pursue coursework and experiences that support the students’ individual research interests and professional paths.

The Ph.D. requires a minimum of 72 credits.

4.2 – Ph.D. Competencies

Graduates of the program will demonstrate the following doctoral competencies:

  • Working knowledge of the field, including its research, prominent individuals and their contributions, and its issues and trends
  • Synthesize knowledge and demonstrate skills associated with the field
  • Communicate orally and in writing at a level of sophistication commensurate with the dissertation
  • Contribute to scholarly conversations in the field and/or create a viable solution to problems in the field.

Iowa State University expects that the requirements for a Ph.D. will be completed within seven years. The average time to completion for students in the School of Education is 4-6 years.

4.3 – School of Education Core Requirements for Students Entering Summer 2018 or Later

All Ph.D. students in the SOE are required to take the following three courses:

  • EDUC 601 : Foundations of Educational Inquiry (3 credits)
  • ResEv 603 : Foundations of Qualitative Inquiry in Education (3 credits)
  • ResEv 604 : Advanced Qualitative Inquiry in Education (3 credits)

All Ph.D. students must also take statistics up through multiple regression. The SOE strongly prefers that students take the following courses, which are SOE educational statistics classes that will ground students in educational research and design.

  • ResEv 552:  Basic Educational Statistics
  • ResEv 553:  Intermediate Educational Statistics

There are, however, other pathways to meet the statistics requirement, including 404 and 568 (formerly STAT 401) in the Department of Statistics. If you are entering the Ph.D. program already versed in multiple regression, please discuss with your POSC in order to determine whether the requirement has been met.

In addition to these SOE-wide core requirements, both the Division of Teaching, Learning, Leadership & Policy and the Division of Higher Education have division-specific requirements. Some areas of emphasis (e.g. Educational Technology) also have area-specific requirements.

All additional coursework is determined in consultation with the student’s POS Committee. While not required, all students are strongly encouraged to take coursework outside the School of Education.

Note:  Students who started prior to Summer 2018 may have different requirements. Consult with your major professor about your core requirements. 

4.4 – Ph.D. Annual Review

All Ph.D. students in the School of Education are required to complete an annual report summarizing their academic and professional accomplishments of the past calendar year as well as to outline goals for the upcoming year. The student completes the form online.  You will receive an email from the graduate support specialist in January with the link to complete the form . The form should be submitted electronically  no later than March 1 .  The student and major professor should then meet between March 1 and May 1 to discuss the advisor evaluation and mutually agreed upon goals. The major professor will share the completed Ph.D. student annual review form with the DOGE by May 1. Students must complete an annual review to be eligible for SOE travel funding in the subsequent academic year.

Steps to complete annual review:

  • All students should have a current CV prepared and be ready to upload CV to annual review form. The CV will be reviewed with your major professor when you meet.
  • Schedule a time to meet with your major professor(s) to discuss the annual review before May 1

Note : Students should plan for at least 30 minutes to complete the online annual review form.

4.5 – Temporary Advisor and Major Professor 

When students are admitted to the Ph.D. program in education they are assigned temporary advisors who will guide them through the initial selection of courses. In most cases, the temporary advisor is a faculty member who has a particular interest in working with the new student.

Once students have begun coursework and had an opportunity to interact with several faculty members in the school, they will need to choose a major professor. We recommend that students make this decision no later than their third semester in the program. While students may choose to ask their temporary advisor to serve in this capacity, students are not required to do so. Students who wish to seek a major professor other than their temporary advisor are encouraged to discuss this with their temporary advisor. Once students have decided whom they would like to serve as major professor, they need to contact this individual and invite the faculty member to serve in this role.

Note:  Some faculty may not be able to take on additional advisees at the present time and students may need to select another faculty member.

Once identified, students should maintain regular contact (at least once per semester) with the major professor to review their progress and obtain guidance for any advising needs.

4.6 – Ph.D. Milestones & Timelines

Five milestones (and their associated meetings with the POSC) mark the pathway to completing a Ph.D. in Education. At each of these, students will meet with their committee. Milestones 3 and 5 (preliminary oral examination and final oral examination) represent formal requirements of Iowa State University’s Graduate College. As such, they require advance scheduling and are governed by specific policies and associated documentation. One of these requirements includes face-to-face meetings between students and their POSCs (see the  Graduate College handbook  for guidance regarding participation of students or committee members from a distance). In the School of Education, the other three meetings should be synchronous but may involve the use of conferencing technology. The milestone meetings allow students to engage in ongoing conversations with the POSC as they progress in the program and shape and refine an area of inquiry. Students are responsible for scheduling the milestone meetings. Once a date and time has been agreed upon, students can initiate the room scheduling process with the graduate support specialist.

Milestone 1: Program of Study and Committee (Completed by End of Third Semester)

This milestone marks students’ determination of their committees, as well as the coursework they will complete as part of their graduate studies. Students should hold a meeting of their committee to review and approve the planned set of coursework. Students should complete and submit their  POSCs  no later than the third semester of doctoral study. Students  must  have an approved POSC the semester prior to the preliminary oral examination (see Graduate College  deadlines for specific dates ).

Selection of the Program of Study Committee (POSC)

ISU requires that the doctoral POSC consist of five members, though larger committees are permissible. A majority must come from the major or program (within your division, Higher Education or TLLP). In addition, at least one member must serve as an “outside” member of the committee, representing a field outside the area of emphasis ( note : this person may be “inside” the School as long as they are not in the student’s area of emphasis). Students should discuss potential members of the POSC with their major professor and then invite these individuals to serve on the committee. When selecting the major professor, students should be aware that faculty members are not always able to accept additional student committee responsibilities. Students are encouraged to discuss any availability and scheduling constraints (such as professional development leaves, international travel, etc.) with faculty when forming their POSC.

Program of Study

The  POSC  lists the courses students will complete to meet the requirements of the degree. Students will consult with their major professors for assistance in planning the Program of Study. It will need to include the core courses required of all students within the School, as well as any other courses required for the program the student is pursuing. Students are advised to be aware of and comply with Graduate College and School of Education policies for over-age (expired) and transfer courses.

The  POSC  is completed online through AccessPlus. Additional information about the  POSC  process, including a  paper worksheet  that can be used with the committee, is available on the Graduate College website. Once the committee has reviewed and approved the Program of Study, students submit the  POSC  form via AccessPlus for electronic routing to the committee members and the director of graduate education (DOGE) for approval.

Non-Degree Courses Policy :  With the approval of the POSC, Ph.D. students may use up to 9 credits taken at ISU as a non-degree seeking student on a Ph.D. POSC.

Transfer Courses Policy:  With the approval of the POS Committee, the School of Education allows up to 24 credits of coursework taken at other institutions to be used on a doctoral program of study. The parameters of these credits can be found in the Expired Courses Policy below and in  the Graduate College transfer requirements . Students may NOT transfer in credits for courses that are explicitly named in the SOE core requirements (i.e., C I 601; ResEv 603, 604) that are in effect at the time of the student’s admission to the program.

Expired Courses   Policy:  Maximum numbers of expired credits that may be included on School of Education programs of study (with the approval of the POS Committee) are listed below. The age of the course is dependent on the date of expected graduation provided in the POSC. If the student does not complete the degree by the expected date, additional current coursework may be required to conform to the limits established below.

Doctoral Students may use any number of credits up to ten tears old and up to 36 credits that are 11 years old or more at the discretion of their POS committee and the DOGE, so long as no more than 12 of those credits are more than 16 years old. An Expired Course Petition must be completed to justify the use of these credits beyond their expiration year. Credits more than 16 years old have been earned in the completion of a previous graduate degree. Coursework that does not meet these stipulations may not be used without documented extenuating circumstances and petition to the Graduate College (visit chapter 6 of the Graduate College Handbook for information about the Expired Course Petition).

Changes in the Committee or to the Program of Study

On occasion, students will need to make changes to their committees or to their Programs of Study (visit  chapter 6 of the School of Education graduate program handbook  for further guidance on making committee changes). These changes are made through AccessPlus and routed electronically for approval by the committee members, the DOGE, and the Graduate College.

The POSC serves as a guide for completing the doctoral coursework POSC. If students find they want to take additional coursework as part of their graduate studies, these courses do not need to be added to the POSC document once it has been approved, unless you are replacing a course on the POSC or it is deemed appropriate to add to the POSC by your committee. As students approach the end of their coursework, they should begin planning for the preliminary exam with their major professor and committee.

Milestone 2: Preliminary Examination Proposal (Completed by No Later Than the Semester Prior to the Preliminary Examination)

The purpose of the second milestone is to prepare for the preliminary examination. The preliminary examination in the School of Education, which has both a written and an oral component, is intended to determine the student’s readiness to continue on to the dissertation phase. The preliminary exam should provide the student with an opportunity to demonstrate that he/she has met the doctoral competencies. Students work with their major professor and committee to choose one of the three formats (outlined below) allowed for the written component in the School of Education. Students will then develop a written document outlining the proposed format and content for the written component. The proposal provides documentation of the agreed upon parameters for the written component. This maintains the integrity of the examination process.

The proposal is shared with the POSC prior to the meeting (two weeks is the expected timeline for faculty review of materials; deviations should be discussed and approved by the committee in advance). At the Preliminary Proposal meeting, the committee reviews and approves the proposal (modifications may result). In addition to determining the content of the written component, the POSC should also determine the procedures and timeline that will be used to evaluate the written materials.

If the preliminary exam will involve completing a capstone project or conducting a pilot/pre-dissertation study, students are required to obtain  Institutional Review Board  (human subjects) approval.

The three format options for the written component are outlined below:

Option 1: Capstone Project

The capstone format requires students to use their knowledge, skills, and abilities in a specific problem-based situation in a public or private sector organization. The purpose of the capstone is twofold. First, to engage students in doing educational leadership and second, to collaboratively support educational organizations with assistance in addressing a need.

The capstone can be completed individually or in a team of students working in the same organizational setting. The length of time is variable, depending on the nature of the experience. Students work within the framework of their organizations, assist in carrying out their mission, and engage in reflective and scholarly endeavors suitable to advanced graduate studies.

In completing this requirement, students:

  • Work with the major professor or an approved mentor to identify an experience in a public or private, profit or non-profit organization
  • Develop a capstone (preliminary examination) proposal and present it to the POSC for review and approval
  • Complete the experience
  • Prepare a report for both the organization and the POSC
  • Are examined over the capstone experience at the time of the preliminary oral exam

The primary responsibility for the organizational placement for the capstone experience rests with the student and the major professor. If more than one doctoral student is to be working with the same organization, each student must have a line of inquiry (not necessarily the problem itself) and scholarly, analytical work that is independent of and clearly identifiable as separate and distinct from other students. The primary capstone mentor may be the major professor or suitable designee as determined by the POSC. A site supervisor who occupies a position in the host organization where the capstone experience occurs should also be identified. The site supervisor is encouraged to be involved in the preliminary oral examination either in person, via video conference, or phone.

Option 2: Traditional Sit-Down Exam

This format involves identifying a series of topics that will frame the examination, as well as determining question authors from among the committee. This format involves students responding to questions during a specified time frame (e.g., 2 to 3 hours per question) and specified conditions (e.g., whether access to notes or the Internet is allowed), as determined by the committee. Once the parameters for the preliminary written component are established and agreed upon by the POSC, the question authors may provide students with a reading list and/or guidance in preparing for the exam. The major professor generally acts as the proctor for the examination, arranging the location, monitoring the agreed upon access to resources, and collecting students’ responses after each examination session.

Option 3: Alternative Format

There are two common alternative approaches to the written component. One involves developing a set of questions or topics with the POSC and a fixed period of time (e.g., 3 or 4 weeks) to develop a paper for each. Generally, the papers provide students with an opportunity to synthesize scholarly ideas across topics and/or to deepen their knowledge in preparation for undertaking the dissertation. The POS committee will determine the number, content, and evaluation process for the papers.

Another alternative approach involves creating and compiling a collection of artifacts that demonstrate the student’s proficiency. The collection should  not  consist solely of a compilation of previously completed course assignments. The collection of artifacts may include a report or manuscript reporting the results of a small-scale or pilot study, critiques of research articles, products developed (technology applications, professional development materials), or a range of other possibilities. The POSC will determine the number, content, and evaluation process for the collection of artifacts.

Evaluation of the Written Component

After students have completed the written component, the major professor will share the written component with the POSC. Members will apply the agreed upon evaluation procedures to determine if students’ written work is acceptable to move on to the preliminary oral examination. If members of the committee have concerns about the written component, the committee will confer to determine an appropriate course of action. This may include requiring students to revise or redo portions of the written component before moving on to the oral examination.

Milestone 3: Preliminary Oral Examination (Completed by the End of the Third Year, No Later than the Fourth Year)

The purpose of the third milestone is to determine eligibility for doctoral candidacy. Within the School of Education, faculty expect that students pursuing their degrees on a full-time basis will generally reach the candidacy stage by the end of their third year and no later than their fourth year.

For the preliminary oral examination, students meet with the full committee (see note below about scheduling the examination) and may be questioned over all aspects of the doctoral experience. Typically, students will be asked to clarify/defend aspects of the written component. At the end of this examination, the committee determines whether the student has passed or failed the preliminary oral examination. The POSC members sign the preliminary examination report form, which indicates the outcome of the examination. If students pass they are officially considered Ph.D. or doctoral candidates, rather than doctoral students. If a student fails the preliminary oral exam, he/she may be allowed to retake the exam, but at least six months must elapse between the failed attempt and the next exam.

Students must pass the preliminary oral examination before beginning dissertation work, except in very rare circumstances and with the approval of the full committee. The Graduate College requires a minimum of six months from the time of the preliminary oral examination until the time of the final oral examination (i.e., dissertation defense).

Note : Once you have confirmed a date and time for your preliminary examination with your committee, contact the  graduate support specialist   at least three weeks in advance of the exam date  to reserve a room and then submit online the  final oral examination request form  to the Graduate College. Also, please let the  graduate support specialist  know if you have a committee member who intends to participate in the exam from a distance.

Milestone 4: Dissertation Proposal (Completed by No Later than Semester Prior to Final Oral Examination)

The dissertation proposal and the proposed study will reflect the nature of the question(s) central to the student’s inquiry and the methodological and disciplinary tradition(s) in which the inquiry is situated. The proposal is submitted to the full committee at least two weeks prior to the dissertation proposal meeting. Students must submit these materials to the major professor for approval prior to submitting to the full committee. In most cases, this is an iterative process of drafts and revisions. The major professor must approve the materials that go to the full committee. Students are required to obtain  Institutional Review Board  (human subjects) approval for all dissertations. This approval may occur before or after the POSC approves the proposal. Students are advised, however, that it is  not  uncommon for the POSC to require changes to the study as part of the approval process.

At the proposal meeting, the committee provides the student with feedback on the proposal and may recommend changes to the study. Students should not begin data collection activities until the POSC has approved the proposed study and the student has obtained Institutional Review Board approval for the study. At the conclusion of the dissertation proposal meeting, the committee will have reached consensus about the parameters of the proposed study or determined that further work is needed on the proposal and requested a future proposal meeting be held to review the revised proposal.

Dissertation

Students conduct the dissertation research and write the dissertation with guidance from the major professor. This is an iterative process that typically entails multiple drafts and revisions. Once the major professor has approved the final draft, the student may schedule the final oral examination (two hours).

Students submit the dissertation to the full committee at least two weeks prior to the final oral examination. (Be aware there are other  deadlines  involving the Graduate College and the thesis office.)

Milestone 5: Final Oral Examination/Dissertation Defense (Completed by the End of the Fifth Year)

Students meet with the full committee and are questioned/examined on their dissertation research. Typically, students are asked to begin the meeting with a brief overview of the dissertation research and the written product. At the end of this examination/meeting, the committee determines whether the student passes. The possible outcomes of the final oral examination are  pass ,  conditional pass , and  fail . The POSC will record the outcome of the examination and sign the report of final oral examination, which is submitted to the Graduate College.

Students who earn a  p ass  may still have to complete minor revisions to the written dissertation before it is submitted. If students earn a  co nditional pass , the POSC establishes additional criteria that must meet prior to earning a pass and determines who (major professor, some committee members, full committee) is responsible for reviewing and evaluating students’ work on the additional criteria; these are documented on the examination report form. If a student earns a  fail  on the examination, the committee will determine (and note on the form) whether the student is allowed to retake the final oral examination (at least two months must elapse before the exam can be retaken.

If students pass the final oral examination and resolve any outstanding issues identified by the Graduate College, they have officially completed their doctoral studies. Be aware of Graduate College  deadlines  and requirements for  submission  of the final dissertation.

Note : Once you have confirmed a date and time for your final oral examination with your committee, contact the  graduate support specialist   at least three weeks in advance of the exam date  to reserve a room and then submit online the  final oral examination request form  to the Graduate College. Also, please let the  graduate support specialist  know if you have a committee member who intends to participate in the exam from a distance.

Job Summary:

The GME Program Manager functions as a member of the Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation Education team. In conjunction with the Program Directors, the position has primary responsibility for managing all aspects of the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation residency and Pain Management fellowship programs within the Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation. The position will coordinate and manage a wide variety of duties that directly impact the residents, fellows, medical students and faculty of the department, working collaboratively and collegially with each. This role will ensure that programs comply with requirements set forthby the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the UW Health Graduate Medical Education (UWH GME) Office. A strong background in graduate medical education is essential. This position requires an individual with strong communication and interpersonal skills, excellent organizational skills, careful attention to detail, the ability to work as a team player and the capability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced and often stressful environment. This position is expected to demonstrate well-developed assessment skills and decision making abilities and judgment.

Responsibilities:

  • 40% Maintains a thorough understanding of accreditation program requirements and related policies, regulatory requirements, and hospital and program policies to provide expert consult to the Program Director to maintain accreditation and compliance with regulatory bodies and pertinent policies
  • 15% Collaborates with the Program Director to assess curriculum and evaluations, developing the structure and delivery mechanism, and maintaining accurate records of curriculum, evaluations, and participation
  • 10% Provides guidance for resident/fellow recruitment, credentialing, and onboarding to maintain compliance with regulatory bodies and hospital policies
  • 15% Serves as the primary contact for the program, liaising with those directly associated with the program, the Institutional GME Office, and regulatory agencies. Advises residents/fellows, program staff/faculty of program and institutional policies and procedures
  • 5% Regularly attends monthly program coordinator meetings and GME educational offerings. Collaborates with other colleagues to develop best practices, and serves as an administrative reviewer of other GME programs. Should regularly attend national GME or specialty conference(s)
  • 5% Maintains the resident/fellow and program expenditures. Advises fiscal leadership on program budgetary needs and monitors program expenses within budget constraints
  • 5% Responsible for ensuring resident/fellow and program compliance with policy, accreditation, and regulatory requirements and that appropriate documentation is maintained
  • 5% May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees

A stark social divide: Adults without college degrees more likely to have no close friends, survey finds

  • People without college degrees also reported less participation in social activities like going to parks or restaurants than college-educated adults.
  • The findings come amid a documented rise in loneliness and social isolation.

Nearly all U.S. adults used to have close friends.

In 1990, the share of the population that said they didn’t was low and roughly the same no matter one’s education level: just 2% for people with college degrees and 3% for those without.

But a recent survey suggests that share has risen overall, particularly among those who did not graduate from college — creating a kind of class divide in people’s level of social engagement and connection. Nearly a quarter of U.S. adults with a high school diploma or lower education level said they had no close friends. The number was even higher for Black adults in that group: 35%.

Just 10% of those with college degrees said the same.

The findings come from a survey of around 6,600 adults conducted by the Survey Center on American Life, a nonprofit that researches how people’s lives are shaped by culture, politics and technology.

“Our social fabric seems to have two layers now,” said Daniel Cox, the center’s director and a co-author of a report published this week summarizing the findings. “It has one for college-educated folks that seems to be relatively intact, and then one for those without college degrees, which seems to be in tatters.”

The findings come amid a documented rise in social isolation nationwide . Around 30% of adults say they’ve felt lonely at least once per week over the past year, and 10% say they’re lonely every day, according to a January poll from the American Psychiatric Association.

The U.S. surgeon general declared loneliness an epidemic last year, citing its links to heart disease, stroke, dementia and premature death. San Mateo County, California, which includes part of Silicon Valley, subsequently declared a public health emergency over high rates of loneliness among residents.

“There’s been considerable decline and atrophy in American social connection,” said Cox, who is also a senior fellow of polling and public opinion at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative Washington think tank, adding that although the pandemic helped bring the issue to light, “this decline had gone on for decades before.”

He offered a few ideas that might explain the trend. One is that being alone is less boring now, thanks to video games and streaming services, so people may be less likely to join social groups or spend time with friends or family. Another is that for those without college degrees, there are fewer opportunities to engage in social activities, perhaps because their access to free public spaces is more limited or they lack the time or money to frequent venues like bars and restaurants.

Cox’s survey found that college-educated adults were more likely to go to restaurants or coffee shops and to strike up conversations with neighbors, compared to people without college degrees. They were also more likely to be members of a neighborhood association, sports league or hobby group (like a book club or regular poker game).

“We put so much of the onus of creating and maintaining friends on individuals instead of institutions,” Cox said. “We’ve shifted all the work, all the effort, onto individuals who now have to coordinate, organize, schedule their social engagements, as opposed to having them occur organically out of the things that they’re already doing.”

People with college degrees were also more likely to be part of a labor union or to regularly attend church, the survey found — two venues that have historically given people with less formal education opportunities to socialize.

The survey even found an educational divide when it comes to free public venues like libraries and parks. Nearly 4 in 10 college-educated adults said they had visited a park or community garden at least once a month in the past year, compared to less than a quarter of those without a college education. And nearly half of college graduates said they had visited a library at least a few times in the past year, compared with a quarter of adults with a high school diploma or less.

“The places that are legitimately free — community centers and libraries — their hours of operation aren’t regular enough for a lot of folks,” Cox said. “Many of those places are closed in the evenings, and then there’s just not enough of them to meet the need.”

Part of the issue may have to do with geography: A 2022 study found that neighborhoods with higher poverty rates have fewer public gathering spaces. And many communities don’t have the money to invest in their public spaces, Cox said.

Limited free time and poor access to transportation likely play a role, as well, said Adam Roth, an assistant professor of sociology at Oklahoma State University, who wasn’t involved in the survey.

“If you live out in the suburbs and you have to change buses or trains or get in your car and do that however-long commute, that is going to be a prohibitive factor,” Roth said.

The story isn’t entirely bleak, though. A collection of surveys from 2022 and 2023 found that even though people in the U.S. desired to be closer to their friends, less than 3% reported having no friends at all. The surveys looked at both close friendships and casual acquaintances.

“Our data didn’t really spell doom and gloom,” said Amanda Holmstrom, a communication professor at Michigan State University who conducted that research. “People have friends — they feel like they don’t necessarily have the time to nurture those friends.”

Casual friendships still offer benefits, of course. Roth said that people report better psychological well-being on days when they have more interactions with a wider variety of people , including ones they barely know. Social interactions in general help reduce or stave off symptoms of anxiety and depression . Face-to-face interactions and engagement in community events have even been linked to lower levels of inflammation .

“The bottom line is, all types of social interactions and relationships matter, particularly for health and well-being,” Roth said. “But the probability of actually experiencing certain types of social interactions is at least partially dependent on the communities we live in.”
