The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is responsible and accountable for the direction and supervision of the area specific orientation, training, development of staff, and evaluation of individual staff performance. They function as a role model educator, practitioner, and supervisor providing leadership to the team. They support factors that impact customer satisfaction considering the client population, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. The ANM influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include management of unit/program level quality improvement processes and initiatives as well as customer service programs. The ANM of the Hematology/Oncology Unit is a supervisory level RN who assists the Nurse Manager (NM) with clinical and administrative functions and provides direct patient care as needed. At the direction of the NM, acts as a supervisor and assumes accountability for the management and operation of the Hematology/Oncology Unit. The ANM assists the NM in the daily functions of the Hematology/Oncology Unit and collaboratively plans and assigns work to subordinate staff members to ensure care is provided through setting of priorities and scheduling assignments for completion of work. He/she provides input on evaluation of the performance of subordinates as well as input on recommendations for appointments, advancements, or reassignments of subordinates. He/she provides instruction and guidance to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters including hearing and resolving complaints and referring more serious issues not resolved to higher level supervisors. He/she assists the NM in data collection and inquiry, Unit level training and identification of training needs of subordinates as well as providing or making provision for such development and training. Qualifications

  • English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware ( ICD ).
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
Nurse I, Level I Delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned clients while developing technical competencies. An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional professional nursing required.
Nurse I, Level II Demonstrates integration of biopsychosocial concepts, cognitive skills and technically competent practice in providing care to clients with basic or complex. An ADN or Diploma in Nursing 1 year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 1 ; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional professional nursing experience required.
Nurse I, Level III Demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning. Self-directed in goal setting for managing complex client situations. An ADN or Diploma in Nursing 2 years of professional nursing experience in which one year is equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2; a BSN and 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the Nurse I, Level 2; a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) and no additional professional nursing experience; a Master's degree in a *related field with a BSN and no additional professional nursing experience.
Nurse II Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. A BSN with 2 years of professional nursing equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3; an MSN with one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3; a Master's degree in a *related field with a BSN and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse I, Level 3; a Doctoral degree in Nursing with no professional nursing experience; a Doctoral degree in a *related field with a BSN with no additional professional nursing experience.
Nurse III Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience and creative approaches to management of complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting. MSN and 2 years of specialized nursing experience, one of which is equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III; a Master's degree in *related field with BSN and two years of specialized nursing experience, one of which is equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III; a Doctoral degree in Nursing with and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III; a Doctoral degree in a *related field with a BSN and one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse II and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse III.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of successful Oncology clinical practice required, with at least one (1) year of recent nursing charge/leadership experience in the unit for which you are applying strongly preferred.
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy lmmunotherapy Certificate accredited by Oncology Nurse Society preferred; must be obtained within 90 days of start date
  • Demonstrated skills in effectively managing human resources in previous assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability in previous assignments to make critical decisions in stressful environments.
  • Demonstrated dependability for duty and flexibility in work assignments and shift hours in previous assignments.

DESCRIPTION

The 6th Floor is a 45 bed acute care progressive care unit at UC San Diego Health's Hillcrest Campus located near downtown San Diego. The unit provides care for a population of high acuity adult medical-surgical patients, oncology and infectious disease.

Team members demonstrate self-determination, an ability to adapt to complex and rapidly changing environments, possess excellent oral and written communication skills, provide care that is patient and family centered, participate in shared governance councils and committees, and are committed to contributing to professional practice that generates quality outcomes and improves the Experience of both our patients and our team members. The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable for providing administrative and clinical leadership. Develops standards of care coordination that demonstrates success in: promoting high quality, cost effective delivery of care; ensuring effective utilization of resources across the continuum; excellent customer service; and compliance with regulatory and internal UCSD requirements. Spearheads innovative projects and approaches involving multi-disciplinary factions for systems improvement that affects patient outcomes across the organization. Plans, schedules and organizes work for departments ensuring proper distribution of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space and facilities.

The Assistant Nurse Manager supervises staff involved in providing clinical patient care. The Assistant Nurse Manger assists in ensuring the quality of patient care delivery in a specific patient care area and serves as a role model for professional nursing practice. Assists with the administration and management of personnel, fiscal, and material resources. May assume full responsibility for the unit in delegated areas and in the absence of the manager.

The position is 40 hours/week, including regular coverage for the night shift. Must be flexible in schedule and can quickly adapt to pressing needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's Degree of Science in Nursing (BSN).

RN license issued by the State of California.

BLS/CPR and ACLS certification at time of hire with commitment to get ART within six (6) months of hire date.

Minimum of two (2) years of recent PCU acute care RN experience.

Charge nurse and/or supervisory experience.

Demonstrated skills to supervise clinicians effectively and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a patient care unit.

In-depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations, and internal policies.

Strong knowledge of human resources management policies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, and document human resources matters and employee performance. Provides input to decision-makers on human resources matters.

A Master’s Degree of Science in Nursing (MSN).

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $128,800 - $252,200 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $61.69 - $120.79

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
