An essay outline is a way of planning the structure of your essay before you start writing. It involves writing quick summary sentences or phrases for every point you will cover in each paragraph , giving you a picture of how your argument will unfold.

At the stage where you’re writing an essay outline, your ideas are probably still not fully formed. You should know your topic  and have already done some preliminary research to find relevant sources , but now you need to shape your ideas into a structured argument.

Creating categories

Look over any information, quotes and ideas you’ve noted down from your research and consider the central point you want to make in the essay—this will be the basis of your thesis statement . Once you have an idea of your overall argument, you can begin to organize your material in a way that serves that argument.

Try to arrange your material into categories related to different aspects of your argument. If you’re writing about a literary text, you might group your ideas into themes; in a history essay, it might be several key trends or turning points from the period you’re discussing.

Three main themes or subjects is a common structure for essays. Depending on the length of the essay, you could split the themes into three body paragraphs, or three longer sections with several paragraphs covering each theme.

As you create the outline, look critically at your categories and points: Are any of them irrelevant or redundant? Make sure every topic you cover is clearly related to your thesis statement.

Order of information

When you have your material organized into several categories, consider what order they should appear in.

Your essay will always begin and end with an introduction and conclusion , but the organization of the body is up to you.

Consider these questions to order your material:

• Is there an obvious starting point for your argument?
• Is there one subject that provides an easy transition into another?
• Do some points need to be set up by discussing other points first?

Receive feedback on language, structure, and formatting

Within each paragraph, you’ll discuss a single idea related to your overall topic or argument, using several points of evidence or analysis to do so.

In your outline, you present these points as a few short numbered sentences or phrases.They can be split into sub-points when more detail is needed.

The template below shows how you might structure an outline for a five-paragraph essay.

• Thesis statement
• First piece of evidence
• Second piece of evidence
• Summary/synthesis
• Importance of topic
• Strong closing statement

You can choose whether to write your outline in full sentences or short phrases. Be consistent in your choice; don’t randomly write some points as full sentences and others as short phrases.

Examples of outlines for different types of essays are presented below: an argumentative, expository, and literary analysis essay.

Argumentative essay outline

This outline is for a short argumentative essay evaluating the internet’s impact on education. It uses short phrases to summarize each point.

Its body is split into three paragraphs, each presenting arguments about a different aspect of the internet’s effects on education.

• Importance of the internet
• Concerns about internet use
• Thesis statement: Internet use a net positive
• Data exploring this effect
• Analysis indicating it is overstated
• Students’ reading levels over time
• Why this data is questionable
• Video media
• Interactive media
• Speed and simplicity of online research
• Questions about reliability (transitioning into next topic)
• Evidence indicating its ubiquity
• Claims that it discourages engagement with academic writing
• Evidence that Wikipedia warns students not to cite it
• Argument that it introduces students to citation
• Summary of key points
• Value of digital education for students
• Need for optimism to embrace advantages of the internet

Expository essay outline

This is the outline for an expository essay describing how the invention of the printing press affected life and politics in Europe.

The paragraphs are still summarized in short phrases here, but individual points are described with full sentences.

• Claim that the printing press marks the end of the Middle Ages.
• Provide background on the low levels of literacy before the printing press.
• Present the thesis statement: The invention of the printing press increased circulation of information in Europe, paving the way for the Reformation.
• Discuss the very high levels of illiteracy in medieval Europe.
• Describe how literacy and thus knowledge and education were mainly the domain of religious and political elites.
• Indicate how this discouraged political and religious change.
• Describe the invention of the printing press in 1440 by Johannes Gutenberg.
• Show the implications of the new technology for book production.
• Describe the rapid spread of the technology and the printing of the Gutenberg Bible.
• Link to the Reformation.
• Discuss the trend for translating the Bible into vernacular languages during the years following the printing press’s invention.
• Describe Luther’s own translation of the Bible during the Reformation.
• Sketch out the large-scale effects the Reformation would have on religion and politics.

Literary analysis essay outline

The literary analysis essay outlined below discusses the role of theater in Jane Austen’s novel Mansfield Park .

The body of the essay is divided into three different themes, each of which is explored through examples from the book.

• Describe the theatricality of Austen’s works
• Outline the role theater plays in Mansfield Park
• Introduce the research question : How does Austen use theater to express the characters’ morality in Mansfield Park ?
• Discuss Austen’s depiction of the performance at the end of the first volume

Modern technology has infiltrated the education sector and as a result, many college students now prefer taking online classes, as opposed to attending the traditional regular classes. This is because online classes are convenient for such students, and more so for those who have to both work and attend classes.

As such, online learning gives them the flexibility that they needed. In addition, online learning also gives an opportunity to students and professionals who would not have otherwise gone back to school to get the necessary qualifications. However, students who have enrolled for online learning do not benefit from the one-on-one interaction with their peers and teachers. The essay shall endeavor to examine the differences between online classes and the traditional classes, with a preference for the later.

Online classes mainly take place through the internet. As such, online classes lack the regular student teacher interaction that is common with traditional learning. On the other hand, learning in traditional classes involves direct interaction between the student and the instructors (Donovan, Mader and Shinsky 286).

This is beneficial to both the leaner and the instructors because both can be bale to establish a bond. In addition, student attending the traditional classroom often have to adhere to strict guidelines that have been established by the learning institution. As such, students have to adhere to the established time schedules. On the other hand, students attending online classes can learn at their own time and pace.

One advantage of the traditional classes over online classes is that students who are not disciplined enough may not be able to sail through successfully because there is nobody to push them around. With traditional classes however, there are rules to put them in check. As such, students attending traditional classes are more likely to be committed to their education (Donovan et al 286).

Another advantage of the traditional classes is all the doubts that students might be having regarding a given course content can be cleared by the instructor on the spot, unlike online learning whereby such explanations might not be as coherent as the student would have wished.

With the traditional classes, students are rarely provided with the course materials by their instructors, and they are therefore expected to take their own notes. This is important because they are likely to preserve such note and use them later on in their studies. In contrast, online students are provided with course materials in the form of video or audio texts (Sorenson and Johnson 116).

They can also download such course materials online. Such learning materials can be deleted or lost easily compared with handwritten class notes, and this is a risk. Although the basic requirements for a student attending online classes are comparatively les in comparison to students attending traditional classes, nonetheless, it is important to note that online students are also expected to be internet savvy because all learning takes place online.

This would be a disadvantage for the regular student; only that internet savvy is not a requirement. Students undertaking online learning are likely to be withdrawn because they hardly interact one-on-one with their fellow online students or even their instructors. The only form of interaction is online. As such, it becomes hard for them to develop a special bond with other students and instructors. With traditional learning however, students have the freedom to interact freely and this helps to strengthen their existing bond.

Online learning is convenient and has less basic requirements compared with traditional learning. It also allows learners who would have ordinarily not gone back to school to access an education. However, online students do not benefit from a close interaction with their peers and instructors as do their regular counterparts. Also, regular students can engage their instructors more easily and relatively faster in case they want to have certain sections of the course explained, unlike online students.

The current paper attempts to afford an evidence-based background on the prevalence, benefits, cons, challenges, and importance of online student assessment at higher educational level. This study is significant as it would assist teachers when applying online assessment. The COVID-19 pandemic compelled almost most universities and higher institutions to suddenly adopt online learning and assessment. In this spectrum, this research paper tries to answer the following question: to what extent the application of the appropriate online assessment is challenging in higher educational institutions? The central set hypothesis states that adopting the practical online assessment meets several challenges that hinder its application in higher educational institutions; however, they do not make its use impossible. To gain empirical data, an emailed questionnaire was sent to the sample. The sample of this research comprises 183 higher education teachers from Algeria. They belong to different faculties and departments. Their selection was based on cluster sampling techniques. The obtained results were treated using the statistical package for social sciences SPSS. The findings prove the existence of some hindrances that harden the application of the online assessment. Also, teachers reveal that they adopted several online assessing techniques and both formative and summative assessments. Ultimately, teachers recommend the organization of courses to improve their use of the online assessment in general. Besides, teachers highly approve of using anti-plagiarism detectors to ensure academic integrity and limit learners' potential misconduct in online assessment.

The devastating effect of Covid-19 have prompted educational practitioners to maximise efforts for ensuring continuous teaching, learning and assessment, by making use of instructional and assessment methods that do not involve human contact. The use of eLearning has since gained momentum, used for curriculum instruction and assessment. The purpose of this study was to establish the authenticity online assessment as used in higher education institutions, with the aim of advancing a model for ensuring an effective online assessment of curriculum content during and post-Covid-19 era. A desktop research methodology was used to gather data for the study. Published research articles on the challenges and effectiveness of online assessment were traced, reviewed and analysed according to predetermined topics of research interests. The findings from the review informed the themes that were interpreted and discussed as ultimate answers for the study. The interpretation of the themes draws insights from literature evidence and current observations in the field of online assessment. The study established that online assessment was characterised by challenges that compromised its authenticity, thus not contributing to the effective mastery of learning outcomes by students. As students attempt assessment tasks on their own, it was difficult to establish if the submitted work was indeed their own or not. In addition, assessment tasks were too many and impractical for students to handle in a given time. Covid-19 pandemic requires that higher education institutions consider employing online instruction and assessment. However, online assessment methods should be authentic in design and implementation to reflect good quality teaching and learning. The study recommends that higher educational institutions should use online assessment methods that enhance objective and credible assessment such as administering synchronous activities and by customising assessment tasks for students. This study explored students’ opinion towards the opportunities and inhibitive factors for online formative assessment. A Google form survey questionnaire was administered to 124 students to generate the information regarding the opportunities of online assessment. Suddenly and unplanned, the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in Spring 2020 required teaching courses pass from physical classroom to the online alternative, posing numerous didactical challenges, assessment being one of the crucial among them. As the choice of assessment methods can result in different measures of learning outcomes, the choice of the appropriate online options in a short time, became demanding as they should have conveyed reliability, validity and uniqueness. On the one hand, one of teachers' greatest concerns was to ensure that genuine students' knowledge and skills were assessed, and to reduce the probability of their cheating. On the other hand, teachers were aware that students needed time and effort to adapt to the new learning situation. Focusing on the unexpected and quick shift from face-to-face education to the online variant, this paper explored techniques employed in assessment of students' achievement, as well as students' experience with the changed circumstances in the assessment processes. The objectives of this research were 1) to examine the assessment methods used in the online higher education, and 2) to compare written and oral/performing online assessment methods with the usual face-to-face assessment methods, specifically depending on the level of students' adjustment to online education. The sample comprised 272 university students, and the questionnaire was administered online in June 2020 referring to the semester that had begun in March and ended in June. In order to explore the first objective, students were asked what types of assessment they had experienced and how vastly they had been used. To answer the second objective students compared eight features between online and face-to-face assessment. More specifically, answers were compared among three groups of students: those who reported to have not adjusted to online education; those that admitted to have had difficulties at the beginning, but mastered it; and students that had found it easy to cope from the start. Regarding the first objective, results revealed that in most courses they had written assessment, shorter written assessments being most frequently applied, followed by the longer ones, and then oral assessments. For the oral/performing assessment the most frequent platform was Big Blue Button, and for the written assessment it was Moodle. Concerning the second objective, students reported that oral/performing assessment and short-time written exams were more stressful than the usual face-to-face assessment. However, in other features they estimated that online and usual face-to-face assessment were alike: providing time, level of difficulty, easiness in checking knowledge, skills and attitudes, objectivity, and taking time to get feedback. The effect of students' adjustment was significant in some of the comparisons of online and face-to-face assessment. To conclude, students' experience with the shift from face-to-face to online assessment revealed that the existing online learning platforms could serve the assessment purposes to a great measure, allowing teachers to employ methods that provide many similarities with the usual face-to-face practice. The most pronounced disadvantage of online assessment was higher level of provoked stress when oral/performing and shorter written exams were implemented. It should probably be ascribed to the unexpected circumstances and a lack of teachers' and students' gradual preparation.

Election latest: Farage urged to 'get a grip' of Reform UK amid racism row

John Healey, the shadow defence secretary, has urged Nigel Farage to "get a grip" of Reform UK after a racism row involving the prime minister. It comes as a Reform UK canvasser who used a racial slur against Rishi Sunak called himself a "total fool" and said he has learned his lesson.

Reform UK has withdrawn support from three of its candidates, the party has confirmed.

Nigel Farage's party is no longer backing Edward Oakenfull, Robert Lomas, and Leslie Lilley - who were all previously candidates for Reform.

Mr Oakenfull reportedly penned social media posts about the IQ of sub-Saharan Africans - which he told the BBC were "taken out of context".

Meanwhile, Mr Lomas allegedly said black people should "get off [their] lazy arses" and stop acting "like savages".

Ms Lilley is accused of describing people arriving on small boats as "scum".

The candidates will remain on the ballot paper, but are no longer endorsed by Reform UK.

It comes as Sky News identified two additional Reform UK parliamentary candidates who shared material deemed "vile" and in breach of the internationally-recognised definition of antisemitism.

The Welsh electorate has travelled in one direction for the last 100 years.

Labour always win more votes and seats than their rivals in Wales but, floating our parliamentary bench on a barge across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, we discover not everything is as tranquil as it seems in this stunning beauty spot.

The 20mph speed limit, wind farms and waiting times on the NHS are all matters raised by people who are not happy with Labour's record in the Senedd.

The first person we meet is Reuben Jones, who works at the local barge hire company adjacent to the aqueduct.

"I'm a transgender person," says Reuben. "I'm very unhappy with the state of the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts at the moment. There are a lot of issues with the education system, a lot of problems with the health care system."

First Minister of Scotland John Swinney has joined criticism of "racist and homophobic comments" allegedly made by Reform UK campaigners.

Despite this, he said they are "not a surprise to me".

Mr Swinney, also the leader of the SNP, said: "I think this is where the politics of Reform ends up and I deplore it. I deprecate it. I want nothing to do with it. 

"We will always rail against racist and homophobic comments, and I can't believe that there's a single thing Nigel Farage can do to control a problem that he himself has started."

The SNP leader goes on to claim that this is not a case of bad apples, but "an ingrained problem of Reform".

He says: "Nigel Farage has set this all up. He has stoked it all.

"With every word over all these years, he has incited all that intolerance and prejudice in our society. 

"I want to have nothing to do with it. 

"And I don't think there's anything Nigel Farage can do to stop it, because he created it."

Reform UK has reported Channel 4 to the elections watchdog for alleged "scandalous... interference" over what the party claims was a fake rant planted by the broadcaster.

Footage from an undercover Channel 4 reporter showed Reform campaigner Andrew Parker using a discriminatory term about the prime minister, as well as saying the army should "just shoot" migrants crossing the Channel.

Police are now assessing the comments to establish if an offence has been committed, while Mr Sunak  said the insult directed at him "hurts and it makes me angry".

Mr Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has since suggested that Channel 4 may have paid an actor to make racist comments about the prime minister, posing as a canvasser for Reform.

In a letter to the Electoral Commission, party secretary and leading barrister Adam Richardson claimed that "Mr Parker is not a property developer as he has alleged but a jobbing actor".

He added it was "entirely evident that Mr Parker was a plant within the Channel 4 news piece". 

The letter said: "It is wholly unbelievable that by complete coincidence Channel 4 were performing an undercover investigation and by chance were paired up to go canvassing with a man who was pretending to be someone else, using a false voice and saying almost exclusively racist and bigoted remarks."

Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK, has said he is refusing to appear on Laura Kuenssberg's Sunday morning politics show until the BBC apologise for a "dishonest" audience.  

He claimed this audience existed during his appearance on Question Time.

Mr Farage says: "I have just been invited to appear on Laura Kuenssberg. 

"I'm refusing until the BBC apologises for their dishonest QT audience. 

"Our state broadcaster has behaved like a political actor throughout this election. 

"Reform will be campaigning vigorously to abolish the license fee."

Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has insisted that his party shares "no values with Nigel Farage" in the wake of a new racism row.

It comes after Mr Farage, the leader of Reform UK, suggested that Channel 4 may have paid an actor to make racist comments about the prime minister, posing as a canvasser for Reform.

Sir Ed says: "Liberal Democrats share no values with Mr. Farage. He can sort himself out. My job as a Liberal Democrat leader is to tell you what we're about. 

"I want to fight a positive campaign about how we rescue our NHS and make sure we get the investment in health and care. Make sure we sort out the cost of living problems that people are really suffering under, and deal with things like the environmental issues, like sewage. 

"You know, and I think people get fed up in this campaign when there's all these diversions and nastiness. They want to know what you're going to do for them. 

"And that's what the Liberal Democrats are going to say."

The Archbishop of Canterbury urged people to avoid "personalised abuse" in the closing stages of the election campaign as he encouraged voters to go to the ballot box.

The Most Reverend Justin Welby said: "In these last few days before the election, let us pray for all candidates taking part in this most essential act of democracy.

"Let us encourage courteous and kind debate and not use personalised abuse.

"Let us carefully consider issues and the common good, and above all vote."

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told former soldiers of his plans for a veterans' bill, if the Tories are re-elected, during a campaign visit in his North Yorkshire constituency.

Mr Sunak drunk tea and munched on a cake at the Ellerton Lakeside Cafe, near Northallerton, as he chatted with about a dozen veterans who had gathered for Armed Forces Day, joking that: "You need a lot of sugar to get through my day."

Listening to the men, he said: "That's why we now have, like they do in the US, we have a dedicated office for veteran's affairs, a minister in the cabinet, funding. 

"So, we're at the start of that journey."

He said: "If we're re-elected, we're actually going to have a veteran's bill, we're going to pass our first ever veteran's bill in parliament. 

"That will bring together all the things that we need to do - put some things in law that will improve the service that we've providing. 

"That hasn't happened before - a flagship veteran's bill that (veterans' minister) Johnny Mercer's been working on which will just continue to improve the support."

Mr Sunak listened as he was told about initiatives to tackle veterans' homelessness, mental health problems and issues facing service families at the nearby Catterick Garrison.

He said: "We want to make sure all of you get the support you are entitled to."
