Admission to the PhD Programmes: Admission to the Ph.D. programmes is normally made on the basis of an interview conducted by the Department/Centre concerned through its Department Research Committee (DRC) / Centre Research Committee (CRC). DRC/CRC may decide to conduct a written test as well to screen the candidates. Applications are invited from candidates by advertising the programmes in Employment News/leading newspapers in March for the first semester and in October for the second semester every year.

Admission schedule: Normally, Ph.D. programmes are advertised in the month of March and October each year in the Employment news as well as in leading newspapers and admissions are carried out in the months of May and December. Further, admission to Ph.D programme is possible any time in the year through DRC/CRC. Ph.D. scholars can join the institute at any time of the year though the course registration will be possible only at the beginning of the subsequent semester. Such candidates must also fulfill the required academic qualification/ experience at the time of interview. They must join the institute within 4 weeks after the issue of admission offer unless specifically permitted otherwise. Hostel Accommodation

For pg/ph.d full time students only.

There is a severe hostel crunch in the campus due to which it is NOT possible to provide hostel accommodation to postgraduate (PG) students (including PhD).

However, the Institute strives to provide a hostel seat (normally on sharing basis only) on priority, if available, to admitted female students, students with special needs (SwD - Students with Disabilities, formally admitted as PwD) and foreign nationals.

Hence, it is to be noted that the offer of admission at IIT Delhi does not guarantee on-campus accommodation.

The best support, pertaining to accommodation, is in form of providing the contact information of some off-campus accommodation that may be available within walking distance of the campus.

Please note that these off-campus accommodations, if available, operate independent of IIT Delhi.

Further, while staying off-campus, there are provisions for making one of our on-campus messes available to students for food on monthly subscription basis.

For any query in this regard, you may contact [email protected], Tel. 011-26591784 .

Iit bombay has announced the result of gate 2021 at its official website, gate.iitb.ac.in, on march 19. the exam is held primarily for admission to mtech programmes and selection for psu jobs, but direct entry to phd with the pmrf in top engineering colleges is also via the gate..

With GATE Scores, Candidates Can Apply For PhD Fellowships At IITs, IISc

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced the result of the Graduate Aptitude Test For Engineering ( GATE 2021 ) at its official website, gate.iitb.ac.in, on March 19. A total of 1,26,813 candidates have qualified the test this year. The exam is held primarily for admission to MTech programmes and selection for PSU jobs, but direct entry to PhD with the Prime Minister's Research Fellowships (PMRF) in top engineering colleges is also via the GATE.

Institutes offering PMRF include all Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, all Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) and a section of the other centrally-funded technical institutions. In May 2020, Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' had announced significant amendments in the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF) scheme. Two channels of entry to the PhD and fellowship programme were created -- direct and lateral. One requires the candidate to have qualified GATE, the other doesn't.

The eligibility criteria for the two paths into PhD with PMRF at the IITs, IISc, IISERs and other CFTIs are given below.

With GATE 2021: Direct Entry

To apply for PMRF through direct entry channel, a candidate must meet the criteria relevant for their group to be eligible:

The candidate should have completed or be in the final year of a Bachelors or Masters degree programme in science and technology at recognised institute or university in India with CGPA of 8 or above and should have attained a GATE score of 650 or above in the relevant subject in the previous three years. GATE 2021 was conducted in 27 subjects.

However, if the candidate obtained their degree from a CFTI, a GATE score is not necessary.

The candidate should have qualified GATE and completed or be pursuing MTech or MS by research at one of the PMRF-granting institutes and must have a minimum CGPA of 8 or above at the end of the first semester with a minimum of four courses.

Without GATE 2021: Lateral Entry

In the lateral entry path, students who are pursuing PhD in PMRF-granting institutions can also apply to become a fellow under the scheme. However, they need to have spent 12 months or 24 months -- depending on whether they joined with a Bachelor's or Master's degree -- in the PhD programme before becoming eligible.

Reduced GATE Score

For students from any recognised institute or university other than IISc, IITs, NITs, IISERs, IIEST, IIITs and CFTIs, the requirement of GATE score is reduced to 650 from 750 apart from a minimum CGPA of 8 or equivalent.

The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) among the top 25 institutions as per NIRF ranking will also be eligible to grant the fellowship.

Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering

Students typically complete the Ph.D. degree requirements in three to five years. Early in the program, students focus on course-work that enhances their knowledge as they prepare to conduct research.

Within one year, students must pass the departmental qualifying exam, an oral exam that tests research skills and knowledge of a core mechanical engineering subject area.

Student research forms the core of the Ph.D. program. Research involves active student-directed inquiry into an engineering problem, culminating in a written thesis and oral defense.

Ph.D. Financial Support

The majority of full-time Ph.D. students accepted through the standard application process receive fellowships that cover full tuition, the technology fee, and a stipend for living expenses for up to five years, as long as sufficient progress is made toward degree completion. These awards are sufficient to cover all expenses for the year (including summers). Students are required to pay for health insurance, the transportation fee, the activity fee, books, and course supplies. Off-campus housing is available within walking distance of campus. At least one year of residency is required for the Ph.D. We offer two ways to enter the Ph.D. program.
