“Long ago, long ago. The simple things come back to us. They rest for a moment by our ribcages then suddenly reach in and twist our hearts a notch backward”, this quote from McCann’s Let The Great World Spin  tells so much about how he wants to present his characters to his readers as he desires for each of these individuals to impact the thinking of his readers. Relatively, McCann focuses on how each character’s being is established as they are able to create a manifestation that the target readers would be easily able to relate to. To do this, he makes sure that each character’s being is realistic and somewhat relative to what the general public might be able to understand from their own personal standpoint.

From the quotation noted above, it is indicated by McCann that it is but natural for humans to learn from the past. The experiences they undergo does leave a mark hence has the capability to either make them better or drive them into a worse case. Considerably the condition by which a human develops depends on how he himself intends to interpret the lesson life offers him. This fact is shown all throughout the written work of McCann as he tries to develop his characters’ value as humans who are able to comprehend and learn from the experiences they get in life. Realizing the mark that each of these experiences have on them, the characters used by McCann in his story strongly portrays the actuality on how humans respond to life’s most important lessons shared and established through incurred experiences. Holding on this theme, the quotation above further points out the possibility by which several human individuals intend to respond to what life offers them as a sense of opportunity that could mark them for life. From a novelist’s standpoint, this is how McCann tries to create a foundation for his characters as they are affected and influenced by the overall plot and theme of his story,

Basketball legend Bill Walton dies at 71 after fight with cancer

MARY LOUISE KELLY, HOST:

Basketball legend Bill Walton, one of the sport's most colorful personalities, has died. The NBA announced today that the 71-year-old had a prolonged fight with cancer. Walton was known as one of the best big men to play the game, winning two national championships with UCLA and two NBA titles with Portland and Boston. Walton later shifted to broadcasting, where he became known for wearing tie dye T-shirts courtside, also his love for the band the Grateful Dead. NPR's Scott Simon talked with Walton back in 2016 about the physical price he paid to play the game he loved.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED NPR BROADCAST)

BILL WALTON: Academics and athletics have always been the easiest part of my life. My challenges in a life that has been defined by meteoric rises and climbs to the top, the top of the highest mountains, and then these catastrophic health crises that would just take me down. I was born with structural, congenital defects in my feet. I tore up my knee for the first time when I was 14.

And then when I was 21, Scott, I was playing for UCLA. And I was high above the basket, making a play on the ball. We hadn't lost a game in five years. And a guy on the other team, in a despicable act of violence and dirty play, he comes across the court and takes my legs out from underneath me and flips me over, and I land flat on my back. I broke my spine that day. And I lived with these orthopedic challenges and problems and pain and limitations.

SCOTT SIMON: I opened your book, "Back From The Dead," thinking that was a reference to the Grateful Dead - and so it may be. But I closed the book thinking "Back From The Dead" really talks about your spinal problems and the health challenges you've had.

WALTON: So I've lived with these forever. And then with the lifestyle that I had of being super tall, being on the road 200 nights a year, which basically means 280 to 300 days a year, and living in a world built for preschool children where you can't stand up anywhere, you can't sit in the furniture, you can't use any of the normal chairs, desk cars, airplanes, you name it - none of it fits.

And so here I was on that road, chasing the dream, trying to be part of something special. And then in February of 2008, my spine finally collapsed. I was flying 600,000 miles a year, every year. And I got off the plane one day at home, intending to go, and I could no longer move. And everything fell apart. And I spent the next years along - this is the longest stretch of my life.

SIMON: You couldn't get off the floor, essentially.

WALTON: I couldn't move. I couldn't think. I couldn't eat. I couldn't drink. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't do anything. And then I had my spine surgery - seven years, six weeks and four days ago. And now I am back from the dead. And I am back to life. And so I live by these constant songs that are playing through my mind and my heart and my spirit and my soul all the time.

And the things that come to mind right now - I'm going to just throw out four different lyrics from the Grateful Dead. When you get confused, listen to the music play. We used to play for silver, now we play for life. Once in a while, you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right. It all rolls into one, but nothing comes for free.

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "STELLA BLUE")

THE GRATEFUL DEAD: (Singing) It all rolls into one.

KELLY: That was Basketball Hall of Famer and broadcaster Bill Walton in conversation with my colleague Scott Simon back in 2016. Bill Walton died today at the age of 71. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.

Belgium has pledged to send more than two dozen F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine as part of a near €1 billion (£832 million) military support package.

The aid was announced as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Brussels for discussions with the prime minister, Alexander De Croo.

In a later statement, Mr Zelensky confirmed that they had signed a “bilateral security and long-term support agreement” worth €977 million. It included 30 US-made F-16 fighter jets that will be delivered to Ukraine incrementally until 2028.

Kyiv has asked its Western supporters to donate F-16 jets since the start of the war more than two years ago. They view them as vital to countering Russia’s aerial threat.

It comes as Russian troops are reportedly gathering on the Ukrainian border as they prepare for fresh offensive operations .

War-monitoring think tank The Institue for the Study of War said this concentration of forces are likely to be used to draw Ukrainian troops into the area and prepare to expand the Russian foothold in the northeastern border area of Kharkiv.

Zelensky issues statement after Belgium F-16 deal

Ukrainian President Voldoymyr Zelensky has issued a statement confirming earlier reports that Belgium had agreed to supply 30 F-16 fighter jets to Kyiv.

The US-made jets have long been sought after by Ukraine, with many believing they are the only way of stopping Russia’s use of deadly glide bombs, which have killed hundreds this year.

The explosives are fired from Russia’s own fighter jets beyond the range of Ukraine’s air defence systems.

“Today in Brussels, Prime Minister AlexanderDeCroo and I signed a bilateral security and long-term support agreement between Ukraine and Belgium,” Mr Zelensky wrote.

“The document includes at least €977 million (£832m) in Belgian military aid to Ukraine this year, as well as Belgium’s commitment to providing our country with support over the course of the agreement’s ten-year term.

“For the first time, such an agreement specifies the exact number of F-16 fighter jets - 30 - that will be delivered to Ukraine until 2028, with the first arriving already this year.”

Ukraine PM to meet some EU leaders in Prague for military aid talks, Czech PM says

Ukraine‘s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal will meet a group of European Union leaders in Prague on Tuesday to discuss military aid to Kyiv for its fight against a Russian invasion, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has said.

Speaking ahead of the meeting later in the day, Mr Fiala reiterated the first deliveries of ammunition procured in a Czech-led initiative, which sources supplies from outside the EU, would reach Ukraine in June.

Mr Shmyhal’s meetings come as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues his tour around Europe. He is expected in Brussels today and Portugal later in the week, having already visited Spain yesterday.

Netherlands pledges parts of Patriot air defence system to Ukraine

The Netherlands will deliver parts of a Patriot air defence system to Ukraine and is talking to other countries in order to assemble a complete system, the Dutch defence minister Kajsa Ollongren has said.

“With our offer, and if other potential partner countries are able to deliver parts and ammunition, we would be able to supply at least one complete system to Ukraine in the short term,” Ms Ollongren said.

Mapped: Russia make advances in Vovchansk

Russian forces have pushed further into the northeastern town of Vovchansk, in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, updated maps have shown.

The town, which had a prewar population of 17,000 but is now home to just a couple of hundred people, has become the primary defensive line for Ukraine’s forces in that region.

Poland should not rule out sending troops to Ukraine, says foreign minister

Poland should not rule out sending troops to Ukraine, foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski has said, as Kyiv struggles to repel Russian advances.

While Ukraine‘s Nato allies have vowed to supply the war-torn nation with money and weapons for as long as it takes to repel a Russian invasion, they have generally ruled out the possibility of sending soldiers to the country.

Asked in an interview whether Poland was ready to send troops to Ukraine, Mr Sikorski said: “We shouldn’t rule it out. We should leave Putin guessing as to our intentions.”

However, he did not specify what role Polish troops would play.

The interview was published in Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza, Italy’s La Repubblica and Spain’s El Pais.

French President Emmanuel Macron opened the door to sending troops to Ukraine and at a conference in Paris in February, suggesting that one area Western troops could help with would be to train Ukrainians in Ukraine.

Mr Sikorski himself has previously said that the presence of Nato troops in Ukraine is “not unthinkable”.

Belgium to provide 30 F-16 jets to Ukraine

Belgium will commit to equip Ukraine with 30 F-16 fighter jets with first deliveries planned for this year, news agency Belga has reported, citing the country’s foreign minister Hadja Lahbib.

The announcement comes hours before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy is due to meet with the government in Brussels later today.

Before invasion, Putin told Germany’s Scholz Russia can change Ukraine’s borders

Before rolling out Russian forces into Ukraine in February 2022, Vladimir Putin had warned German chancellor Olaf Scholz that Russia could change Ukraine’s borders forcibly.

The Russian president had claimed that Ukraine is not an independent state and that Russia can unilaterally and forcibly change its smaller neighbour’s borders.

His remarks were mentioned by Mr Scholz at the Freedom for Democracy Festival in Berlin on Sunday.

Putin had said "Ukraine and Belarus are parts of Russia" and the German chancellor’s discussion with Putin demonstrated that Putin thinks that one can change borders "with the help of force."

“Putin has consistently demonstrated that he does not consider Ukraine an independent state with its own history, identity, and culture separate from Russia, as evidenced by his 2021 essay, "On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians”; that his war aims include the total defeat of Ukraine; and that he has expansive territorial ambitions in Ukraine,” said The Institute for the Study of War in its assessment.

Spain provides more air defence missiles to defend against Russian glide bombs

On a visit to Madrid, Volodymyr Zelensky has secured a pledge of additional air defence missiles from Spain to help fight the about 3,000 bombs that he says Russia launches every month at Ukraine.

The Ukrainian war-time president said the country still urgently needs another seven US-made Patriot air defence systems to stop Russia hitting the power grid and civilian areas, as well as military targets, with devastating glide bombs that wreak wide destruction, Mr Zelensky said.

“If we had these modern Patriot systems, (Russian) airplanes wouldn’t be able to fly close enough to drop the (glide) bombs on the civilian population and the military,” he told a news conference in the Spanish capital.

Glide bombs are heavy Soviet-era bombs fitted with precision guidance systems and launched from aircraft flying out of range of air defences. The bombs weigh more than a ton and blast targets to smithereens, leaving a huge crater.

Kyiv says it will invite French military instructors to train troops in Ukraine

Ukraine’s top military commander Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi said he has signed documents that will allow French military instructors to visit Ukrainian training centres.

General Syrskyi said he and Ukrainian defence minister Rustem Umerov had a video call with French defence minister Sebastien Lecornu.

Paris has not confirmed any timeline for sending French military instructors to Ukraine.

The French defence ministry said it has been discussing sending French military instructors to Ukraine since president Emmanuel Macron met with European leaders in February this year to discuss European support for Ukraine, but did not explicitly confirm that France would send French military instructors to Ukraine.

Ukraine Steps Up Attacks With U.S. Long-Range Missiles

The assaults have hit military targets in Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine. Pressure is now mounting on Washington to let Kyiv fire the missiles into Russia itself.

Reporting from Kyiv, Ukraine

The Ukrainian army has increasingly used U.S.-supplied long-range missiles to target Russian airfields and warships deep inside Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, but it has been barred by Washington from extending its attacks into Russia proper, limiting its ability to repel enemy assaults.

In the past week, Kyiv’s forces launched three attacks using Army Tactical Missile Systems, known as ATACMS. The air assaults — which hit an air-defense system and a missile ship in Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine’s east and south — were reported by both sides, and their impact was confirmed by independent groups that analyze geolocated footage of the battlefield.

Ukraine hopes that the strikes, by hurting Moscow’s ability to conduct military operations, will ultimately help relieve troops struggling to contain Russian advances on the ground. But the United States and other Western allies have permitted only the firing of Western weapons into Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine, not into Russia itself, for fear of escalating the war.

Ukrainian officials have complained that the policy allows Moscow to launch attacks from inside Russia without risk and handcuffs Ukraine’s ability to repel them. “They proceed calmly, understanding that our partners do not give us permission” to strike, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said in an interview with The New York Times this past week. “This is their huge advantage.”

Now, pressure is mounting on the Biden administration to reverse that policy in the face of Ukraine’s difficulties on the battlefield. The latest call came on Friday, with NATO’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, telling The Economist that denying “Ukraine the possibility of using these weapons against legitimate military targets on Russian territory makes it very hard for them to defend themselves.”

Reinforcing Kyiv’s case that hitting targets inside Russia is a matter of life and death, Ukrainian officials said that Russia hit a shopping center on Saturday in Kharkiv with powerful glide bombs, killing at least six people and injuring at least 40 others. The bombs can fly several dozen miles, allowing Russian warplanes to launch them with relative impunity from inside Russia.

“If Ukraine had sufficient air defense systems and modern combat aircraft, Russian strikes like this one would have been impossible,” Mr. Zelensky said in a post on social media that included a video showing plumes of black smoke billowing from the shopping center, as firefighters scrambled to extinguish the blaze.

Ukraine does not produce powerful long-range weapons, leaving it dependent on its Western allies to obtain them. But Washington had long refused to even provide ATACMS — pronounced “attack ems” — fearing that doing so could cross one of the Kremlin’s “red lines” that would lead to escalation.

That changed late last year, when President Biden approved sending Ukraine a version of the ATACMS that can hit targets 100 miles away . Then, in April, Washington secretly gave Kyiv a new version of the weapon , with a range of about 190 miles.

And on Friday, the United States announced a $275 million military package for Kyiv that includes ammunition for HIMARS, a rocket launcher that can fire the ATACMS missiles. Mr. Zelensky thanked the White House, saying on social media that the package included “much-needed long-range missiles.”

The missiles have allowed Ukraine to hit logistics and command posts deep behind Russian lines. Kyiv has targeted airfields, ammunition depots, antiaircraft missile launchers and concentrations of troops.

A particular target has been the Russian-occupied peninsula of Crimea, a supply hub for Moscow’s forces in the southeast and a launchpad for missile and drone attacks. Moscow reported several attacks involving ATACMS missiles this month.

This past week, the Ukrainian army said it had hit the Crimean port of Sevastopol and damaged a small missile ship. The Institute for the Study of War , a Washington-based think tank, said that satellite imagery from the attack’s aftermath showed likely damage to the ship.

Earlier in May, Ukrainian forces hit a Russian air-defense system near an air base in Crimea, according to Oryx, a military analysis website that counts losses based on visual evidence.

But Ukraine’s inability to fire the weapons into Russia itself has given Moscow a significant advantage, Ukrainian officials say, which became clearer when Russian forces opened a new front this month in the Kharkiv region of northeastern Ukraine. Leading up to the offensive, Moscow had built up troops and equipment near the border, but the allies’ policy barred Ukraine from targeting them with Western weapons.

After about two weeks of fierce fighting, Mr. Zelensky said on Friday that the Russian advance there had stalled and that the situation was under control. Still, the offensive has given Moscow its biggest territorial gains in Ukraine since late 2022.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

U.S. and allied intelligence officials are tracking an increase in low-level sabotage operations in Europe  that they say are part of a Russian campaign to undermine support for Ukraine’s war effort.

Some American-made, precision-guided weapons supplied to Ukraine have proved ineffective on the battlefield , their accuracy badly diminished by Russian jamming efforts.

Ukraine has begun releasing prisoners to serve in its army , part of a wider effort to rebuild a military that has been depleted by more than two years of war and is strained by relentless Russian assaults.

Striking a Chord: A play based on a classic 19th-century novel, “The Witch of Konotop,” is a smash hit among Ukrainians who see cultural and historical echoes  in the story of what they face after two years of war.

Europe’s Defense Industry: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine jolted Europe out of complacency about military spending. But the challenges are about more than just money .

Putin’s Victory Narrative: The Russian leader’s message to his country appears to be taking hold : that Russia is fighting against the whole Western world — and winning.
