Importance of a Good Essay Title

The journey of writing an essay is punctuated with various crucial steps, but perhaps none is as underestimated yet vital as crafting the perfect title. A title is more than just a heading; it’s the first impression, a decisive moment where readers decide whether to continue reading or move on. The significance of a good essay title cannot be overstressed, as it plays a pivotal role in the success and reception of your essay.

First Impressions Count

A title is the initial point of contact between your essay and its potential reader. Just as one dresses appropriately for an interview to make a good first impression, an essay must have a title that immediately captures attention. A compelling title acts like a window, offering a glimpse into the soul of your essay. It sets the tone and expectation, priming the reader for what lies ahead. A mundane or uninspiring title might lead to your essay being overlooked, regardless of the quality of its content.

Engagement and Curiosity

Engagement begins with curiosity, and a well-crafted title is a tool to pique the interest of the reader. It acts as a hook, intriguing the audience and sparking their curiosity. A title like “The Unseen Consequences of Climate Change” invites the reader to explore a possibly unconsidered aspect of a well-known issue. The title should entice the reader, promising them new insights and perspectives.

Reflecting the Content

A good title is a summary of your essay in a nutshell. It should be a distillation of the essence of your work. This doesn’t mean it has to be plain or direct; rather, it should encapsulate the central theme or argument in an engaging way. Titles that mislead or don’t align with the content can disappoint or confuse readers, detracting from the trustworthiness and credibility of the essay.

Keywords and Discoverability

In the digital age, where many essays are accessed online, titles play a crucial role in discoverability. Titles that incorporate relevant keywords improve the essay’s visibility on search engines and academic databases. This aspect is particularly important for students and researchers who want their work to be easily found and accessed.

Memorability

An effective title is memorable. It sticks in the reader’s mind, prompting them to think about the essay long after they’ve read it. Memorable titles often use literary devices such as alliteration, metaphors, or puns. For example, “Fahrenheit 451: The Temperature at Which Books Burn” by Ray Bradbury is not only descriptive but also intriguing and memorable.

Connection with Success

There is a direct correlation between a good title and the success of an essay. Academic essays with striking titles tend to be cited more often, as they catch the attention of other scholars and researchers. In more informal settings, a compelling title can be the difference between an essay that is widely read and shared and one that languishes in obscurity.

Tips for Essay Writing

Writing an essay can be a challenging yet rewarding process. Whether you are a student, a budding writer, or someone who needs to craft an essay for professional purposes, understanding the nuances of essay writing is essential. This comprehensive guide offers valuable tips, discusses different types of essays, and provides insights into structuring your essay effectively.

Understanding Different Types of Essays

  • Narrative Essays: These essays tell a story, usually from the writer’s perspective. The key is to engage the reader with a compelling narrative. Title Suggestion: “A Journey Unveiled: [Your Story Topic]”
  • Descriptive Essays: These focus on painting a picture with words, describing a person, place, thing, or event in vivid detail. Title Suggestion: “The Colors of [Your Description Topic]”
  • Expository Essays: These essays aim to inform or explain a topic clearly and logically. They are fact-based and devoid of personal feelings. Title Suggestion: “Unraveling the Facts: [Your Subject]”
  • Persuasive Essays: The goal here is to convince the reader to accept the writer’s point of view or recommendation. Title Suggestion: “The Case for [Your Argument]”
  • Argumentative Essays: Similar to persuasive essays but with a more balanced view, presenting both sides of an argument. Title Suggestion: “Navigating the Debate: [Your Topic]”
  • Compare and Contrast Essays: These essays examine the similarities and differences between two subjects. Title Suggestion: “Contrasting Worlds: [Subject 1] vs. [Subject 2]”

Essay Writing Tips

  • Start with Research: Before you begin writing, thoroughly research your topic. Gather all the necessary information and data to ensure your essay is well-informed and factually accurate.
  • Create an Outline: An outline helps organize your thoughts and structure your essay logically. It serves as a roadmap, guiding you through the writing process.
  • Craft a Strong Thesis Statement: Your thesis statement should clearly state your essay’s main idea or argument. It sets the direction and tone of your essay.
  • Engaging Introduction: Your introduction should capture the reader’s attention and provide a preview of what the essay will cover.
  • Body Paragraphs with Clear Arguments: Each paragraph should focus on a single idea or argument, supporting your thesis statement. Use evidence, examples, and explanations to substantiate your points.
  • Use Transition Words: Transition words help the flow of your essay, guiding readers smoothly from one idea to the next.
  • Conclude Effectively: Your conclusion should summarize the main points and restate the thesis in light of the evidence presented. It’s your final opportunity to leave a lasting impression.
  • Revise and Edit: Review your essay for any grammatical, spelling, or punctuation errors. Ensure that your essay flows logically and that your arguments are well-presented.
  • Avoid Plagiarism: Always credit your sources properly. Use citations and references to acknowledge the work of others.
  • Seek Feedback: If possible, have someone else read your essay and provide feedback. Fresh eyes can catch errors and provide a new perspective.

Structuring Your Essay

  • Introduction: Set the stage for your essay. Begin with a hook, provide background information, and end with your thesis statement.
  • Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence that relates to your thesis. Follow this with supporting sentences and concrete evidence.

How to Brainstorm Essay Titles

Brainstorming an essay title is a crucial step in the essay writing process. A title acts as the gateway to your content, setting the tone and expectation for the reader. Here are techniques and insights into how creativity, research, and the strategic use of keywords can lead to the creation of compelling essay titles.

Techniques for Brainstorming Essay Titles

  • Mind Mapping: Start by jotting down words or phrases related to your essay topic. This can include main themes, arguments, or any words that resonate with your subject. Mind maps help in visually organizing your thoughts and finding connections between ideas.
  • Use Writing Prompts: Writing prompts can stimulate creative thinking. For instance, if your essay is about climate change, prompts like “What if we fail to act?” or “The future of renewable energy” can lead to intriguing title ideas.
  • Play with Words: Experiment with alliterations, metaphors, and puns to make your title catchy and memorable. For example, a title like “Solar Saviors: Harnessing the Sun’s Power” uses alliteration effectively.
  • Ask Questions: Titles framed as questions can be very effective in engaging readers. They provoke thought and curiosity. For instance, “Is Artificial Intelligence the End of Human Creativity?” immediately piques interest.

The Role of Creativity and Research

  • Creativity in Titling: Creativity in titles involves thinking outside the box and experimenting with language. It’s about crafting a title that not only summarizes your essay but also captures the reader’s imagination.
  • Research for Relevance: Research ensures that your title is relevant and accurate. Look at existing literature on your topic, especially the titles of academic papers, books, and articles. Notice patterns, commonly used terms, and how titles are structured in your field.

Integrating Keywords Effectively in Titles

  • SEO-Friendly Titles: In the digital age, where many essays are accessed online, using keywords effectively in your title can boost the visibility of your work. Identify keywords that are most relevant to your topic and integrate them into your title in a way that feels natural.
  • Balancing Keywords with Creativity: While keywords help in SEO, it’s important not to sacrifice creativity. Your title should be a blend of SEO-friendly terms and creative expression. For example, “Green Revolution: The Future of Sustainable Energy” combines keywords with a creative element.
  • Keyword Positioning: Place important keywords toward the beginning of your title if possible. Titles are often truncated in search engine results, so placing keywords at the start ensures they are visible.

Example Scenarios

  • For an Argumentative Essay on Social Media: Start with keywords like ‘social media,’ ‘impact,’ ‘society.’ Brainstorm around these words to come up with titles like “Social Media: Society’s New Catalyst or Culprit?”
  • For a Descriptive Essay on a Personal Experience: Creativity takes the front seat. If your essay is about overcoming a challenge, a title like “Beyond the Abyss: My Journey of Resilience” can be compelling.
  • For an Expository Essay on Technology: Incorporate both technical terms and a layman-friendly approach. A title such as “The Digital Dawn: Explaining Blockchain Technology” strikes a balance between being informative and accessible.

  • If your story revolves around a central motif, object, or theme, it can be a great title candidate.
  • Engage readers’ curiosity by posing a question. For example: “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”
  • Keep the Genre in Mind :
  • Tailor your title to match the conventions or expectations of your story’s genre without being too on the nose.
  • Brainstorm and List :
  • Jot down multiple title ideas. This process can help you refine and combine words until the perfect title emerges.
  • Feedback is Gold :
  • Share your top title choices with friends, family, or writing peers. Fresh eyes might offer a perspective or preference you hadn’t considered.
  • Sit on It :

How To Write A Creation Myth in 10 Steps

Ever wondered how worlds come to life in stories? Learn how to write a creation myth in a few simple steps with examples. Writing a creation myth can seem daunting, but crafting an origin story for your fictional world doesn’t have to be hard. Let’s explore a few examples of creation myths and look at some key elements that make them work, like symbolism and explaining natural phenomena.

What is a creation myth?

A creation myth is a symbolic story that explains how the world and everything in it was created. Creation myths are found in nearly all cultures and religions throughout history. They help make sense of where we came from and why the world is the way it is.

The most well-known creation myth is probably the Biblical story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden. But creation stories come in all shapes and sizes with a wide variety of beliefs. Common themes involve one or more creator gods, earliest chaos, creatures being shaped from clay or emerging from a cosmic egg, and the separation of various natural realms like the heavens, earth, and underworld.

No matter the tradition, creation myths give insight into a culture’s fundamental values and understanding of the universe. As an author crafting your own fictional realm, thinking about its origins through a creation myth can reveal a lot about its inhabitants, environment, and belief systems. The key is tapping into timeless archetypes that resonate with readers while putting your own fresh spin on the genre.

See our post on how to write a myth for more details on the different types of myths .

Types of Creation Myths

There are many ways to classify creation myths, but one common method is to identify the main theme or motif that connects them. For example, some creation myths involve a creator god or goddess who makes the world out of nothing, while others involve a primordial being or force that is divided or separated into different parts. Here are some examples of different types of creation myths based on this method:

  • Creation from chaos : This type of myth describes how the world came from a state of disorder or nothingness, and how order was established by a powerful being or force. For example, in the Babylonian creation myth, EnĂťma EliĹĄ, Marduk defeated Tiamat, the primordial sea monster, and created the heavens and the earth from her body.
  • Creation by emergence : This type of myth describes how the world emerged from a primordial substance or element, such as water, fire, or air. For example, in the Chinese creation myth, Pangu was a giant who separated heaven and earth by his body. He died after 18 days and his body parts became different features of nature.
  • Creation by world parents : This type of myth describes how the world was created by a pair of deities who represented different aspects of nature or life. For example, in the Greek cosmogonical myth, Heliopolis creation myth, Uranus (sky) and Gaia (earth) were separated by their children Cronus (time) and Rhea (motherhood). They gave birth to other gods and goddesses who shaped the world.
  • Creation from the cosmic egg : This type of myth describes how the world was created from an egg that contained all living things. The egg hatched or broke open to reveal a new world. For example, in the Hindu creation myth, Hiranyagarbha creation (India), Brahma (the creator god) emerged from a lotus that grew from Vishnu’s navel. He created various worlds with his breath.
  • Creation ex nihilo: This type of myth describes how the world was created out of nothing by a single deity or a group of deities. The deity(s) then shaped the world according to their will and imagination. For example, in the Genesis creation myth (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Rastafari), God created the heavens and the earth in six days and rested on the seventh.
  • Earth-diver: This type of myth describes how the world was created by a deity or a group of deities who plunged into the primordial waters and brought up different elements or features of nature. For example, in the Chinese creation myth, Pangu was a giant who separated heaven and earth by his body. He died after 18 days and his body parts became different features of nature.
  • Division: This type of myth describes how the world was created by a primordial being or force that was divided into two halves or joined together by another being or force. The two halves then became different realms or aspects of reality. For example, in the Greek cosmogonical myth, Uranus (sky) and Gaia (earth) were separated by their children Cronus (time) and Rhea (motherhood). They gave birth to other gods and goddesses who shaped the world.
  • Dismemberment : This type of myth describes how the world was created by a primordial being or force that was dismembered into different parts by another being or force. The parts then became different realms or aspects of reality. For example, in the Norse cosmogonical myth, Ymir was a giant who was killed by Odin and his brothers. His body parts became different features of nature.

These are just some examples of creation myths from different cultures and religions. Keep on reading to learn how to write a creation myth yourself.

Examples of Famous Creation Myths

Before diving into how to craft your own creation myth, let’s look at a few popular creation myths from various cultures around the world to inspire your imagination:

  • Ancient Greek Creation Myth : In ancient Greek mythology, first there was only chaos in the form of a primordial void known as Gaia. The Titans emerged out of Gaia, including the sky god Uranus and earth goddess Gaea. They gave birth to the first gods like Cronus, who later produced the Olympian gods such as Zeus and Poseidon who shaped the cosmos. Zeus would defeat Cronus and the Titans to usher in mankind along with the other creations of the gods.
  • Aboriginal Australian Creation Myth: According to Aboriginal Australian beliefs, in the beginning, the world was flat, barren, and dark. The Rainbow Serpent emerged from the ground and gave life to plants, animals, and the first people. The travels of the Rainbow Serpent shaped the earth itself, forming mountains, valleys and waterways. The stars were embodiment of ancestral spirits. Tjukurrpa stories detail their creative acts.
  • Mayan Creation Myth: The Mayans told that originally the world was covered only by the primordial sea. Then the feathered serpent god Kukulkan built land in the sea and created sky to separate realms. Kukulkan constructed people out of maize then set the sun, moon, stars and planets in motion. Other gods finished details like mountains, rivers, plants and animals to finish creation.
  • Norse Creation Myth: According to Norse mythology, in the beginning, there was only a vast abyss called Ginnungagap, between the realms of fire and ice. When the fire and ice met, they formed a giant being named Ymir, who was the ancestor of all the frost giants. From Ymir’s sweat, a cow named Audhumla emerged, who nourished Ymir with her milk. Audhumla licked the ice and revealed a god named Buri, who had a son named Bor. Bor married a frost giantess named Bestla, and they had three sons: Odin, Vili, and Ve. The three brothers killed Ymir and used his body to create the world. His flesh became the land, his blood became the sea, his bones became the mountains, his teeth became the rocks, his hair became the trees, and his skull became the sky. They also created the first humans, Ask and Embla, from two pieces of wood.
  • Chinese Creation Myth: According to Chinese mythology, in the beginning, there was only a chaotic mass of energy called Hundun, which contained the seeds of all things. A cosmic egg formed within Hundun, and a giant being named Pangu emerged from it. Pangu held the eggshell above him and the earth below him, separating the sky and the land. He grew taller every day for 18,000 years until the sky and the earth were fully apart. When he died, his body parts transformed into various elements of nature. His breath became the wind, his voice became the thunder, his eyes became the sun and the moon, his blood became the rivers, his hair became the stars, his flesh became the soil, his bones became the minerals, his sweat became the rain, and his parasites became the humans and animals.

Crafting an imaginative origin story for your fictional world can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. Follow these 10 key steps on how to write a creation myth and give a deeper meaning to your fictional world’s lands, creatures, and beliefs.

Step 1: Define the Purpose of the Myth

Before embarking on the creation of a myth, it’s essential to clarify the purpose behind it. Consider what you want the myth to achieve and the message you aim to convey to your audience. This step involves introspection on the broader goals and themes you wish to explore in your myth. Here are key questions to help guide this process:

  • Define the core idea or moral lesson you intend your myth to communicate. This could be a lesson about courage, the consequences of hubris, the cyclical nature of life, or any other theme.
  • Clarify whether your myth will focus on cosmogony (the origin of the universe), theogony (the origin of gods), anthropogony (the origin of humans), or a combination of these.
  • Decide if your myth will serve as a vehicle for conveying moral principles, ethical guidelines, or cultural norms.
  • Consider if the myth will play a role in preserving cultural identity, offering solace during challenging times, or instilling hope in the face of adversity.

If you need some inspiration, take a look at this post on 56+ myth ideas .

Example:

Let’s say the purpose of your myth is to convey the importance of environmental stewardship and the consequences of neglecting the natural world. Your message could revolve around the interconnectedness of all living things and the responsibility humans have to care for the planet. This purpose will guide the development of themes, characters, and events in your myth, ensuring they align with the overarching message of environmental harmony.

Step 2: Establish the First State

In this step, you define the formless initial state of your fictional world before creation. This setting provides the canvas upon which the rest of your myth will unfold. The first (or primordial) state could be chaos, oblivion, darkness, a void, or even a cosmic egg. It sets the stage for the transformative journey from the formless to the formed.

Let’s imagine your myth begins with the description of a cosmic egg hovering in the dark vastness of chaos. The egg symbolizes the potential for creation, containing within it the essence of all that will come into existence. The chaos represents the undifferentiated and unstructured state before order and life emerge. This cosmic egg becomes the focal point from which the entire universe will hatch and evolve. In your myth, you might describe the cosmic egg as a luminous orb, pulsating with energy. The darkness surrounding it is impenetrable, emphasizing the mystery and limitless possibilities contained within the egg. As your myth progresses, the cosmic egg will play a pivotal role in the creation process, acting as the catalyst for the birth of stars, planets, and life forms.

Step 3: Introduce the Creator/s

This step involves introducing the entities or forces responsible for bringing your world into existence. Consider whether they are gods, demigods, spirits, early human beings, or something entirely different. Understand their powers, limitations, intentions, and how they shape the narrative. The nature of your creators will significantly influence the tone, themes, and messages conveyed by your myth.

In your creation myth, let’s say the creators are ancient celestial beings known as the Luminara. These divine entities are beings of light, each representing different aspects of creation. They possess the power to mould reality, shape cosmic forces, and breathe life into the void. The Luminara exist beyond mortal comprehension, and their intentions for creating the world are rooted in a desire for balance and harmony. You can describe the Luminara as radiant beings, shimmering with ethereal energy. Each deity has a unique role: one governs the celestial realms, another oversees the natural world, and a third is the guardian of the cosmic order. The limitations of the Luminara might include their inability to directly interfere in the affairs of the mortal world, emphasizing the need for mediators in the creation process. Understanding the Luminara’s motivations and characteristics will guide the subsequent stages of your myth.

Step 4: The First Creations

In this step, you define the earliest realms formed out of primordial chaos or the initial state you established. Typically, these creations represent fundamental elements like light/dark, sky/earth, and land/sea. Consider the symbolic significance of each creation and how they contribute to the overall structure of your fictional world.

Continuing with the myth of the Luminara, the first creations could include the division of the cosmic elements. One deity, associated with radiant light, manifests the celestial realm, where stars and galaxies form. Another deity shapes the earthly domain, sculpting mountains, valleys, and seas. A third deity is responsible for the ethereal space between, crafting the atmospheres and cosmic energies that connect the celestial and earthly realms. The light and dark paradox may be introduced at this stage, symbolizing the cosmic balance maintained by the Luminara. The celestial realm shines with eternal brilliance, while the earthly realm experiences the ebb and flow of day and night. This sets the stage for the subsequent steps in the creation process, illustrating the interconnectedness of these elemental realms and their importance in the unfolding myth.

Step 5:  Describe the Creation Process

In this step, you delve into how your creators brought the world into existence. Consider the method they used, the challenges they faced, and the setbacks they overcame. This is an opportunity to inject excitement, drama, and conflict into your myth, making the creation process dynamic and engaging.

In the Luminara myth, the creators embark on a harmonious dance, weaving cosmic energies with their divine powers to shape the realms. As they perform this cosmic ballet, challenges arise—conflicting forces seeking to disrupt the balance. A disgraceful deity, jealous of the Luminara’s creation, attempts to plant chaos. The creators face the challenge of maintaining cosmic order against these destructive forces. The dance becomes a metaphorical battleground, with each step countering the disruptive energies. Setbacks occur as the evil deity temporarily throws the realms into turmoil. The Luminara respond with resilience, devising ingenious solutions to restore equilibrium. This step adds depth to the myth, portraying the creation process as a struggle against opposing forces, reinforcing the themes of balance and resilience.

Step 6: Create a Cosmic Structure

This step involves outlining the establishment of cosmic order within your mythological world. Define the celestial elements such as stars, planets , moons, and seasons. This cosmic structure shapes the framework of your universe and influences the life within it.

In the myth, as the Luminara harmonize the cosmic forces, they sculpt a breathtaking celestial panorama. Seven planets, each infused with unique essences, orbit in perfect synchrony. Gaianthos, the green orb, symbolizes life and growth, while Lunathria, bathed in silver luminescence, embodies wisdom and reflection. And Celestria, the yellow orb symbolises everything that is light and positive. Each planet becomes a testament to the Luminara’s intention for a diverse and thriving cosmos. Three moons gracefully dance around the planets. Selentara, with its gentle glow, influences dreams and emotions. Umbraforge, the shadowed companion, governs the ebb and flow of magical energies. Lastly, Aetherion, the radiant moon, bestows blessings upon the creatures below. The moons’ celestial choreography weaves an intricate tapestry of energy that resonates through the mythic realms. The seasons unfold as a divine symphony, orchestrated by the Luminara. Spring brings a burst of life, with blossoms unfurling in the wake of Gaianthos. Summer bathes the cosmos in a warm glow from Celestria, while autumn heralds a time of reflection under Lunathria’s silver gaze. Winter, guided by the ethereal dance of the moons, is a season of rest and introspection. This detailed cosmic structure enriches the myth, intertwining natural elements with symbolic significance, reinforcing themes of balance and interconnectedness.

Step 7: Introduce the World

Mark the point where humans enter the world, often after everything else is prepared for them. What is the physical appearance of your world? Is it a vast expanse of stars and planets, a lush and verdant planet filled with life, or something else entirely? What creatures inhabit your world? Are they humans, animals, spirits, or something else entirely? What is their relationship to the creators and the world itself?

See our guide on 112+ World-Building Questions for more ideas.

The Luminara’s cosmic symphony gives birth to Celestria. The world has endless sunshine, floating islands adorned with vibrant flora, and crystalline rivers that weave through the landscape. Celestria, along with the six other planets, all orbit a radiant sun casting a kaleidoscope of colours across the cosmic universe. Three moons—Umbraforge, Selentara, and Aetherion— rotate the world, influencing the ebb and flow of magic in the realm. As the planets and moons collaborated, they birthed the first inhabitants: the Celestrians. These beings possessed ethereal beauty and a deep connection to the cosmic energies surrounding them. The Celestrians lived in harmony with the enchanted flora and fauna that adorned Celestria. Beyond the Celestrians, mythical creatures roamed the land. Majestic Gryphons soared through the starlit skies, their wings trailing stardust. Luminescent Faewings flittered among the floating islands, spreading magical pollen that gave life to vibrant, floating blossoms. Enigmatic Meriphins, beings with the tail of a dolphin and the grace of a celestial dancer, inhabited the crystal-clear waters of Celestria. The land also echoed with the calls of Celestial Songbirds, their melodies harmonizing with the cosmic energies. These creatures, with feathers that shimmered like the night sky, brought messages of harmony and unity to all corners of the realm. Celestria, a world of wonders, where Celestrians coexisted with enchanting creatures, embodying the magic and harmony instilled by their cosmic creators.

Step 8: Establish the Moral

If your myth is intended to teach moral lessons, now is the time to introduce them. What are the values and principles that the creators instilled in their creation? What actions are considered right or wrong? What are the consequences of breaking these codes? This will help to shape the culture and society of your fictional world.

Celestria’s creation myth revolves around the moral teachings bestowed by the Luminara, the creators of the world. They emphasized virtues such as compassion, enlightenment, and cosmic balance. The Celestrians were entrusted with the duty of upholding these virtues, fostering an enlightened society that respected the diversity of all cosmic beings and maintained harmony on  Celestria as well as the entire universe.  The gatherings in Celestria are marked by celestial festivals, where the Celestrians come together to celebrate cosmic diversity. During these luminous events, they engage in celestial dances, exchanging stories of enlightenment, and participating in rituals that symbolize the interconnectedness of all beings. Holidays in Celestria align with events such as the Great Conjunctions and Nova Unions. These moments are revered as sacred, prompting Celestrians to reflect on the celestial order and renew their commitment to the moral teachings of the Luminara. Actions considered right in Celestria involve fostering unity, seeking enlightenment, and maintaining cosmic balance. Celestrians are encouraged to assist fellow beings in their cosmic journeys and contribute to the collective enlightenment of the world. Conversely, actions that disrupt cosmic harmony or show disregard for the diversity of beings are deemed wrong. Celestrians who deviate from the moral code may experience a temporary dimming of their celestial essence, symbolizing a disconnection from the cosmic wisdom imparted by the Luminara. Serious consequences involve the permanent removal of the celestial light that surrounds them exiling them into eternal darkness. Through these consequences, the myth emphasizes the enduring importance of upholding moral teachings.

Step 9: Convey a Sense of Wonder

Remember, your creation myth is not a scientific explanation of the universe. It is a symbolic story that is meant to inspire awe and wonder. Use vivid language, imagery, and metaphors to create a sense of mystery and enchantment.

As the Celestrians engage in their celestial dances during the Great Conjunction, the myth describes the celestial bodies swirling in harmonious choreography, casting ethereal glows that illuminate the entire universe. The celestial music, a symphony of energies, resonates through the heavens, captivating the senses of all who partake in the celestial celebration. The celestial realm itself is described as a tapestry of cosmic hues, where stars paint trails of radiant colours across the vast canvas of space. Nebulas unfurl their tendrils, weaving tales of ancient cosmic events, and the gentle hum of energies provides a soothing backdrop to the cosmic wonders. Metaphors and vivid language abound, describing the celestial bodies as poets and the cosmic winds as storytellers whispering secrets across the celestial plane. The narrative is infused with a sense of mystique, urging Celestrians to look upon their cosmic home with ever-renewed wonder and appreciation. Through such poetic imagery and metaphorical language, the creation myth transports its audience to a realm where the boundaries of reality blur, inviting them to experience the cosmic wonders with a childlike sense of awe.

Step 10: Share your Myth

Once you have written your myth, share it with others. Let them interpret its meaning and draw their own lessons from it. The more people who hear your myth, the more it will become part of your fictional world’s culture and history.

In the vast expanse of nothingness, where darkness reigned supreme, an ethereal orb pulsated with an otherworldly glow. This was the cosmic egg, the cradle of all creation. Within its shimmering depths, the seeds of existence lay dormant, waiting to be awakened by the Luminara, the celestial beings who had sculpted the cosmos with their divine light. The Luminara, a triad of radiant beings, each representing a facet of creation – Zenith, the celestial architect, Solaris, the guardian of life, and Umbra, the weaver of harmony – converged upon the cosmic egg. Their combined brilliance illuminated the surrounding darkness, heralding the dawn of a new era. Zenith, with a touch as gentle as a star’s caress, moulded the cosmic egg into a swirling vortex of energy. Solaris, with her warm embrace, infused the vortex with life’s essence, and Umbra, with his gentle touch, wove the threads of harmony into the fabric of creation. As the Luminara worked, strong opposing forces emerged seeking to disrupt their work. A sinister entity blanketed sections of space in shadow, suppressing light and life. The Luminara persevered, countering darkness with galaxies of dazzling stars. But the shadow would not be easily defeated. It was cunning, unpredictable – a worthy cosmic adversary. The struggle between light and dark turned into an elegant dance – creation countering destruction in an eternal interplay of forces. Matter and antimatter were borne. From this dance seven celestial bodies emerged – planets of vibrant hues, each with its unique essence. Gaianthos, the verdant gem, was a beacon of life, teeming with lush flora and diverse creatures. Lunathria, the silver sphere, exuded wisdom and tranquillity, its ethereal glow illuminating the cosmos. Celestria, the golden orb, pulsed with warmth and enlightenment, embodying the divine principles of balance and harmony. Encircling these celestial gems, three moons – Selentara, the gentle guardian of dreams and emotions, Umbraforge, the shadowed protector of magic, and Aetherion, the radiant bestower of blessings – danced in perfect harmony, their celestial ballet weaving a tapestry of cosmic energies. As the Luminara continued their creation, they brought forth the seasons, each with its distinct character. Spring, awakened by Gaianthos, ushered forth a burst of life, with blossoms unfurling in a riot of colours. Summer, bathed in Celestria’s golden glow, brought warmth and vitality, while autumn, under Lunathria’s silver gaze, inspired reflection and introspection. Winter, guided by the moons’ ethereal dance, was a time of rest, rejuvenation, and inner peace. From the celestial symphony, the world of Celestria emerged, a paradise of endless sunshine, floating islands adorned with vibrant flora, and crystalline rivers that wove through the landscape. Its inhabitants, the Celestrians, were beings of ethereal beauty, their hearts attuned to the cosmic energies that permeated their world. With the Celestrians came a harmonious society, where humans, mythical creatures, and the natural world coexisted in perfect balance. Majestic Gryphons soared through the skies, their wings trailing stardust, while Luminescent Faewings flittered among the floating islands, spreading magical pollen that gave life to vibrant, floating blossoms. Enigmatic Meriphins, beings with the tail of a dolphin and the grace of a celestial dancer, inhabited the crystal-clear waters of Celestria, while Celestial Songbirds, their melodies harmonizing with the cosmic energies, brought messages of harmony and unity from the sky. Celestria, a world of wonder and magic, exemplified the principles of harmony, balance, and interconnectedness, a testament to the Luminara’s divine creation. The Celestrians, guided by the moral teachings of the Luminara, fostered a society that respected the diversity of all beings and maintained harmony on Celestria and throughout the cosmos. Through celestial festivals, gatherings, and rituals, the Celestrians celebrated their cosmic heritage, reinforcing the importance of unity, enlightenment, and the interconnectedness of all beings. The Great Conjunctions, when the celestial bodies aligned in perfect harmony, and the Nova Unions, when new stars were born, were considered sacred occasions, prompting Celestrians to reflect on their cosmic journey and renew their commitment to the Luminara’s teachings. Celestria’s creation myth served as a guiding force, emphasizing the importance of upholding the moral principles instilled by the Luminara. Celestrians who strayed from the path of righteousness faced consequences, their celestial essence dimming as a reminder of their connection to the cosmic wisdom. Those who committed acts of disharmony or disregard for the diversity of beings were exiled into eternal darkness, a stark reminder of the consequences of disrupting the cosmic order. Through the creation myth, the Celestrians were reminded of their responsibility to cherish their world, to foster harmony among all beings, and to uphold the principles of enlightenment and compassion. The myth served as a constant beacon, guiding Celestrians towards a future filled with cosmic harmony and wisdom.

And that’s how to write a creation myth in just 10 easy steps. Follow each step and create a spectacular origin story for your fantasy world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an example of a creation myth.

A famous creation myth comes from Ancient Greek mythology. This story explains how the god Chaos was the first thing to exist. The Ancient Greeks thought Chaos was an empty, black nothingness.

Then Gaia, the Earth goddess, emerged from Chaos. Next came Eros, the god of love. Gaia and Eros created Uranus, the sky, and Pontus, the sea. Together, Gaia and Uranus made the Titans, who were the parents of the Olympian gods like Zeus and Athena.

There was a big battle between Zeus and the Titans. Zeus won and then became the chief god. Under Zeus, the Olympian gods created humans and the world as the Ancient Greeks knew it.

This Greek myth shows how creation stories try to explain where everything originally came from. They often involve supernatural beings with magical powers that form lands, seas, skies and living creatures. By sharing these tales, people aim to understand cosmic forces shaping the universe and the world around them.

What Is The Structure Of A Creation Myth?

A creation myth has a similar structure to any good story. There’s a beginning, middle and end. But there are also some key elements that most creation tales include:

  • The First State: This sets up the formless initial situation, like a void, chaos or darkness.
  • Introducing Creators: Next, gods, magical beings or cosmic forces arrive to start shaping things.
  • First Creations: The most basic parts of reality are formed first, like night and day, water and land.
  • Shaping the World: The creators make landscapes, plants , animals and humans.
  • Cosmic Structure: Heavenly features like stars, planets and moons are established.
  • Introducing Inhabitants: Creatures, spirits and people emerge to inhabit the world.
  • Initiating Actions: The creators instruct inhabitants how to act or make mistakes that affect what happens next.
  • Imparting Meaning: By the end, readers understand the beliefs behind the myth and the lessons it teaches.

So most creation stories follow a logical order where the cosmos originates from some initial state and then evolves bit by bit. Scenes where the gods use their powers to craft different natural elements are very common. Adding vivid imagery for each step makes myths even more engaging!

How To Write A Creation Myth Story?

A creation myth is all about imagining a fictional origin tale for your fantasy world. Here are some tips on how to write a creation myth:

  • Brainstorm Ideas: First, jot down any concepts, images or creatures that you want to include. Cosmic eggs? Mysterious gods? Dragon ancestors? Let your ideas run wild!
  • Build the World: Outline the geography, environments and beings that will populate your world. Decide if events will take place on an Earth-like planet, in magical dimensions, or across multiple realms.
  • Develop a Plot: Structure your myth into a narrative with a beginning, middle and climax. Maintain continuity by listing each major step in the creation process.
  • Characterise the Creators: Give your cosmic creators clear identities and abilities that influence how they shape reality. Are they benevolent goddesses or mischievous sorcerers?
  • Incorporate Symbolism: Embed symbolic elements that hint at deeper meanings about life, death, human nature or spirituality.
  • Use Description: Choose emotive, vivid language to immerse readers in your world and leave a strong impression.
  • Add Your Own Flair: Make your story distinctive by putting a spin on common myth tropes. Surprise your audience and stir their imaginations!

Once you have a draft, re-read your myth and fine-tune anything unclear or contradictory. Polish any rough patches. Then bring your fictional creation epic to life! Crafting creation stories takes creativity but yields epic world-building rewards.

And there you have the foundation you need to start crafting an imaginative creation myth for your own fantasy realm! We explored creation myths by covering the essential steps – establishing the first state, introducing supernatural creators, shaping domains out of the void, populating your world with wondrous inhabitants, and instilling deeper meaning.

Tips and Tricks to Create Catchy and Original Essay Titles

Creating catchy and original essay titles is crucial for capturing the interest of your target audience and enticing them to read your essay. Here are some tips and tricks to help you generate compelling essay titles:

  • Understand Your Topic: Know your main argument and the purpose of your essay. Tailor your titles to reflect the main theme or idea of your essay.
  • Keep it Short and Sweet: Remember, first impressions matter! Aim for titles under 15 words for maximum impact.
  • Use Active Voice: Ditch the passive and make your title sound dynamic. Instead of "The Power of Education," try "Unlocking Potential: Why Education Matters."
  • Use Creative Words: Incorporate words that are creative, descriptive, or unusual in your titles to spark curiosity and stand out from the crowd. For example, use words like “Uncover,” “Reveal,” “Explore,” or “Examine.”
  • Keyword Optimization: Think of words people might search for related to your topic. Including them helps your essay get discovered.
  • Ask a Question: Curiosity piqued! Titles like "How Did the Internet Change the World?" draw readers in.
  • Highlight Your Perspective: Convey your point of view or stance on the topic. Let readers know what you are going to argue or prove in your essay.
  • Personalization: Tailor your titles to your audience's interests and preferences. Use “you” or “your” to make readers feel directly addressed.
  • Punny, But Not Too Cheesy: A well-placed pun can be memorable, like "The Write Stuff: Tips for Crafting Stellar Essays."
  • Numbers Are Eye-Catching: "5 Ways to Combat Climate Change" visually stands out and suggests a clear structure.
  • Be Specific: Give readers a clear idea of what your essay is about. "The Rise of Artificial Intelligence" is more informative than "Technology's Impact."

How to come up with book title ideas.

Need an original book title, and fast? We got you. Here are 8 ways to come up with book title ideas.

1. Start free writing to find keywords

Write absolutely anything that comes into your head: words, phrases, names, places, adjectives — the works. You’ll be surprised how much workable content comes out from such a strange exercise.

2. Experiment with word patterns

Obviously, we’re not advocating plagiarism, but try playing around with formats like:

“The _____ of _______”
“______ and the _____”

These will work for certain genres, though they are by no means the only patterns you can play around with. Have you noticed how many blockbuster thrillers these days feature the word “woman” or “ girl” somewhere in the title?

3. Draw inspiration from your characters

If your central character has a quirky name or a title (like Doctor or Detective) you can definitely incorporate this into your book title. Just look at Jane Eyre, Percy Jackson, or Harry Potter, for instance — working with one or more or your characters’ names is a surefire way to get some title ideas down. Equally, you can add a little detail, like Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure, to add a little color to a name and make it title-worthy.

4. Keep your setting in mind

Is your book set somewhere particularly interesting or significant? Even if your title isn’t just where the action takes place (like Middlemarch by George Eliot), it’s something to have in the back of your mind. You can include other details, like The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum or Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay, to give your readers a sense of action and character, as well as setting (which tend to be linked).

5. Look for book title ideas in famous phrases

Think Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird here — this is a central symbol and significant piece of dialogue in the novel. It’s enigmatic (what does it even mean? Is it a warning? An instruction?) and makes us really sit up when these words appear in the text itself. Try and think of your inspiration for writing your book or sum up your central theme in a few words, and see if these inspire anything.

6. Analyze the book titles of other books

You might be surprised at how many books refer to other works in their titles ( The Fault in Our Stars by John Green comes from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar , and Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men takes its inspiration from a Robert Burns poem). Going this route allows authors to use an already beautiful and poetic turn of phrase that alludes to a theme in their own book. From Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls to Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials , so many books have used this technique that might also work for you.

7. Don’t forget the subtitle

In non-fiction publishing, there’s a trend of evocative or abstract titles, followed by a subtitle that communicates the content (and is packed with delicious keywords that the Amazon search engine can’t resist). This is also another way to get around long titles — and to add a little panache to an otherwise dry subject matter. In the United States, it’s also quite common to have “A Novel” as a subtitle (if, you know, it’s a novel). In the United Kingdom, this practice is much rarer.

8. Generate a book name through a book title generator

If you’ve gone through all of the above and are still wringing out your brain trying to come up with the golden formula — fear not! There are other ways to get the cogs whirring and inspiration brewing, such as title generators.

And speaking of cogs whirring, let us present you with the...

15 best book titles of all time

Witty, eye-catching, memorable — these famous book titles have it all. Without further ado, here are 15 best book titles you can take inspiration from.

  • I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
  • East of Eden by John Steinbeck
  • The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
  • Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick
  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett
  • Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith
  • The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton
  • Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler
  • And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
  • Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
  • The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger
  • Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  • Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown
  • The Man Who Was Thursday by G.K. Chesterton

Looking for even more story title ideas?

If you’re agonizing over your book title, you’re not alone! Some of the best book titles today emerged only after much teeth gnashing. The Sun Also Rises was once titled Fiesta ; Pride and Prejudice was once First Impressions . Then there was F. Scott Fitzgerald, who reportedly took forever to think of a good title. He ultimately discarded a dozen ( Gold-Hatted Gatsby , The High-Bouncing Lover , and Trimalchio in West Egg included) before reluctantly picking The Great Gatsby .

So it’s tough out there for a novelist, which is why we built this generator: to try and give you some inspiration. Any of the titles that you score through it are yours to use. We’d be even more delighted if you dropped us the success story at [email protected] ! If you find that you need even more of a spark beyond our generator, the Internet’s got you covered. Here are some of our other favorite generators on the web:

Fantasy Book Title Generators : Fantasy Name Generator , Serendipity: Fantasy Novel Titles

  • Sci-Fi Novel Title Generators : Book Title Creator , Story Title Generator

Romance Book Title Generators : Romance Title Generator

Crime Book Title Generators : Tara Sparling’s Crime Thriller Titles , Ruddenberg’s Generator

Mystery Novel Title Generators : The Generator .

Or if you think that generators are fun and all — but that you’d rather create your own book title? Great 👍 Kick off with this post, which is all about how to choose your book title . And once you've got the words down, make sure you capitalize your title correctly .

💡 Creativity in Academic Essay Titles: Is It Appropriate?

Students who prefer creative self-expression may find it challenging to adhere to the formality of academic writing as it may seem incompatible with creativity. However, creativity is essential to academic essays since it helps you convey your thoughts in original ways.

You are free to choose a creative title for your academic paper but ensure it reflects your essay's subject and central argument. To do so, entitle your work according to the following scheme:

  • Add the creative part to your main heading . The creative element can be a witty remark, a play on words , or a reference to a famous quotation.
  • Include a descriptive part in your subtitle . The descriptive element should clarify your essay's topic.

Here is an example of using this scheme:

Cracks in the Story: The Plausible Depiction of Post-Apocalyptic Nature in The Last of Us .

✍️ How to Write a Creative Title for an Essay

The title is the first thing that gets readers' attention when reading your essay. Follow these 4 steps to come up with a great headline.

Step 1: Write Out Key Terms

Keywords are words and phrases that reflect the essay's main idea. Scholars usually choose specific terms to make their articles easily identifiable in research databases. Although your essay might not appear in a scholarly database, you should use the same approach. After all, keywords in the title are like a brief summary: they help the reader understand what to expect from your paper.

Step 2: Search the Web for Creative Ideas

You can get ideas online if you need more inspiration to make a creative title. For example, you can look for the wordplay that can be used with your key terms. You may use a line from a song or a phrase from your favorite book as the basis of your catchy headline. Additionally, you can find a metaphor or use ambiguous words to make a witty essay title.

Step 3: Make up a List of Titles

It is hard to create a perfect title on the first try. That is why we recommend listing 4 to 10 possible headlines. Then you can experiment with them, change their structure or format. The more headlines you put in the list, the more likely you will find the perfect one. Also, you can combine several short titles if one can complement the other.

Step 4: Choose the Title That Suits You Best

Finally, look through your list of titles and pick the one that suits your essay best. Your headline must meet the following criteria:

  • Be catchy . Including a catchy statement in your paper's title will pique your readers' curiosity.
  • Reflect on the contents of your essay . Giving readers some information in your title can help them understand what you have prepared.
  • Be short . Be straightforward when selecting your phrasing. Use phrases that are easy to understand for ordinary people.
  • Avoid over-provocative wording . Controversial statements can sometimes be offensive. If you use provocative terms in your essay name, ensure you have a solid and apparent reason for doing so.
  • Suggest an inquiry or analysis . Avoid selecting a headline that does not allow in-depth research. In other words, do not choose general knowledge facts or unprovable claims as your title.

📝 Creative Essay Titles: Examples

Here, we can notice the reference to a quotation from the American TV series that originally sounds like "to boldly go where no man has gone before." Also, the authors used a wordplay: no — NO (nitric oxide).
"Is the EU an Economic Giant and a Political Dwarf?" This title uses a metaphor: the European Union is compared to a giant and a dwarf. But the meaning of the essay is clear: it elaborates on the role of the EU in economics and politics.

Here are some more examples of creative essay titles for your inspiration:

How to Write Your Own Creation Myth

  • Author: M. T. Dremer

Tips to create your own creation myth

Tips to create your own creation myth

Creation Myth Ideas

If there is one thing I’ve learned about writing fantasy, it’s that you need to know absolutely everything about the world you create. This ranges from the forest your main character walks through to the ‘old war’ that your mentor frequently refers to. The reader may not ever know the scope of what you created, but you need to know every detail.

This is an exhausting process, and I admit that creating the perfect world will probably elude all of us because we simply cannot think of everything or we don’t have the time to create a fully realistic world. At some point, we have to stop creating and start writing a story. But one of the most important and certainly the most fun historical aspects of your fantasy world is the creation myth.

Most, if not all, fantasy stories have a creation myth. Sometimes authors use it prominently to describe a religion or historical account to the reader/main character, and sometimes they don’t. Still, it’s unquestionable that making one will enrich your story and solidify your world that much more.

Influences and Examples

Tolkien’s name always comes up when discussing fantasy, and sure enough, he had his own creation myth for middle earth. It centered around a deity known as Iluvatar, who wove the world out of a song with the Ainur (similar to angels). It was through the efforts of Melkor, who decided to change the song based on his own whims, that evil was allowed to exist in the world that was created. The whole story is considerably more detailed than my summary, and it can be read in its entirety in the Silmarillion (usually right next to the lord of the rings trilogy in bookstores).

From that brief description, however, one can see that Tolkien borrowed from more recognizable religious mythologies. For example, in Christianity, the patron deity is just called God, and he has his angels below him, of which Lucifer defected. There are certainly deviations that Tolkien took, and the result was an original creation that fueled the events of his famous novels.

However, Christian creation myths are not the only sources one can use for inspiration. Greek mythology is particularly popular, opting instead for multiple deities ruling over the Earth, with Titans being their predecessors. In that regard, many creation myths revolve around pieces of supernatural beings creating parts of the world (like an arm becoming a mountain or blood becoming rivers).

Just recently, I began learning more about Norse mythology and Yggdrasil; the world tree which has branches in all aspects of the cosmos. But, as you can see, there are many influences from which to draw. Whether it is a more traditional deity or alien beings with powers beyond our imaginings, there is a wealth of material to help influence how your creation myth comes about. That isn’t to say you have to use any of these examples, but we’re all influenced by something, and these creation myths offer a framework from which to get started.

Where to Start

When writing my fantasy novel, the creation myth was not the first thing I wrote. In fact, I don’t think I came up with it until after I had gone through several drafts. So don’t feel bad if you’ve started writing your book and don’t have a creation myth yet. You could probably get away without writing one, but as I said above, having one, even if no one sees it, will positively affect your work. So, whether you’re deep in your story or not, it’s never a bad time to get started.

What Is Your World?

First, you’ll need to figure out what your world ‘is’ and what created it. Most people think of worlds in terms of planets, but Terry Pratchett proved that you don’t need the traditional globe to make it work (his fantasy world is disc-shaped, sitting on the backs of four elephants, who are standing on top of a giant flying space turtle). So brainstorm about what you want yours to be.

Maybe it’s a realm that exists outside of traditional space and time; you’re not restricted to a solar system, but don’t feel bad if you do use the traditional planet structure, as it is a good fallback. (You don’t need to be totally original on every aspect of the story. Trying to do so will only exhaust you.)

What or Who Created It?

So, once you figure out what your world is, now you need to figure out who or what created it. If you’re not a huge fan of the whole deity thing, then using scientific explanations (such as the big bang) is totally acceptable as well. A number of fantasy stories use the modern world as a jump-off point, saying that our lust for technology and war led to our destruction, and from the ashes rose up an entirely new fantasy world. You may be wondering how it is a creation myth if you use scientific explanations or a post-apocalyptic Earth, but regardless of how it is created, you still will have some work to do.

Why Is There Magic?

There are a lot of questions you’ll need to answer when creating your myth, but none are as important as the existence of magic. This is, of course, assuming you have magic in your fantasy world. Many fantasy novels don’t incorporate magic at all, but there is something that sets your world apart from the Earth we all know and love; otherwise, you’re just writing historical fiction.

So you need to figure out why it is different. Did the deity that created your world see fit to give magic to humans? Did a council of deities kill one of their out-of-line comrades, and their body/blood seeped into the world, inadvertently giving the humans magic? Did cosmic rays break through the atmosphere and give everyone radioactive superpowers? The explanation you come up with will influence your story.

For example, if the gods didn’t want your characters to have magic, then those who use magic will be despised, and the gods might work in opposition to them. As opposed to a world where the gods want humans to have powers and thus would help those with abilities. But it’s most important to explain why your world is different because all the things that are similar can be assumed by you and/or the reader with far less description.

Where Are the Creators Now?

Another way that creation myths influence your story is the question of where the creators are now. If it was a deity, what happened to them, and why aren’t they still influencing this world? If they are still around, then maybe that will introduce a new character. If they’re not, then the reason why they aren’t could influence the narrative.

For example, what if the gods left because the humans became corrupt? Then, maybe a religion your character encounters seeks to fix that corruption in hopes that the gods will come back. Or, on the opposite side, another religion doesn’t want the gods to come back because they were so quick to ditch the humans. These beliefs will heavily influence your cast of characters and potentially give more backstory to some you haven’t fleshed out yet.

If your creation story is more scientific, then maybe the way it influences your current story is by how the ‘differences’ are affecting your characters. Like I said in the example above, maybe your world has magic because of cosmic radiation. Well, does that radiation cut short the lives of the people in this world? Are there people trying to protect themselves from radiation?

All of the answers you come up with to these questions will influence your story without even describing the creation myth to the reader. You may find that it is beneficial to describe that myth, but everything you create in the background enriches the foreground.

Is Evil Necessary?

A lot of creation myths also involve the creation of an ultimate evil, the most obvious being the devil. But I wouldn’t say this is a requirement of all creation myths. It is a requirement, however, that there be some form of conflict. If the god that created your world is super nice and sticks around to help the humans, then you run the risk of losing the sense of potential doom. The conflict doesn’t need to come from an external source.

As I said above, maybe the gods didn’t want humans to have magic, so they left. The conflict, then, is that the gods aren’t necessarily going to help you, and you can’t be certain which way they’re going to swing. Or, like in the radiation example, the creation of magic comes at the cost of people’s health. Some sort of balance must be struck, otherwise, your story will be one-sided. Conflict is the lifeblood of any good story.

How Do I Know When I'm Done?

Unless you’ve published every book in your series and a prequel novel that describes your creation myth, then you’ll never really be ‘done.’ Most fantasy worlds continue to evolve even after parts of them are in print. But this isn’t a bad thing. The purpose of a creation myth is to strengthen the framework of your fantasy world and be used in conjunction with histories and legends already enriching the present.

Focus on answering the big questions, and the rest will fill in as you go. These mythologies might also work for other genres of writing, but since I am most familiar with fantasy, that’s really the only one I can vouch for. But hopefully, this guide gets you thinking about the nuts and bolts of the world you thought you knew and turns it into something that much more interesting.

Poppy from Enoshima, Japan on December 15, 2018:

The questions and prompts you provide in the article spark ideas. Thank you for sharing this, I got a lot of ideas even while writing it! Characters need a creation myth to fall back on, to believe there's a greater power. Thank you for your insights.

Catherine Giordano from Orlando Florida on January 07, 2017:

This is very interesting. I don't have the imagination to write fantasy, but I love to read it.

Tisha on November 28, 2016:

When writing a myth essay, your essay needs to show that you have an in-depth understanding of the topic at hand and can formulate an opinion about the myth.

• Choose a theme for your essay and formulate a thesis statement

• Research the mythology within your topic thoroughly

• Take notes on your chosen topic as you research from your references

• Outline your paper

• Write the body of your essay first

• Incorporate other myths into your paper

• Add in historical references for the mythology

Amber Lim on May 19, 2016:

I am applying the knowledge from this hub to my own creation myth for a novel I'm writing right now. I'm new at hubpages and I'm glad I stumbled upon your hub. I have so many stories stashed upon in my closet that I will never publish, and most of them was because I couldn't get it to make sense. So thanks for this hub. I am now working on a book I aim to publish.

Ian Stuart Robertson from London England on December 21, 2015:

I've been pondering the reality of this subject a lot lately. Infinity, other realms, the end time. It just overwealms the imagination!

Ian Stuart Robertson from London England on June 12, 2014:

Now this is where it becomes rather difficult. I looked up the profile of Fredrich Nietzche and although i understand his philosophy this will take some length of tyme to absorb.

limpet - Thank you for the comment! You're off to a great start already. ;-)

Ian Stuart Robertson from London England on June 07, 2014:

Beyond time and space there once was a cosmological void before our existance. Humanity is merely a pinprick of conscience amid abstrant thinking.

M. T. Dremer (author) from United States on March 04, 2012:

Pumpkin - Sounds like a great creation myth you've started there. Having a good foundation for a world will make telling stories in it that much easier. Thanks for commenting!

Pumpkin on March 03, 2012:

Really useful for a project I'm working on atm. My favourite is the idea of cosmic radiation, which I evolved into Divine Radiation, the idea that God's presence itself is toxic/poisonous to humanity's phyiscal form, and humans cannot rejoin God until they have shed their physicality and ascended to a higher level of consciousness.

M. T. Dremer (author) from United States on January 31, 2012:

ananceleste - I'm glad I could help renew old projects. I know the feeling of thinking a piece is dead and gone, then suddenly having it revitalized. It's an important lesson that, as a writer, you should never throw anything away. You never know when something old will be useful in what you're doing now. My biggest writing fear is being misinterpreted, which has driven me to edit like a crazy person (which isn't always beneficial to the story). I wish you luck in your writing and thanks for the comment!

Anan Celeste from California on January 31, 2012:

Thank you for taking the time and effort to write this article. Is a spring of inspiration and it has motivated me to pick up past proyects. That has been one of my biggest fears, to leave empty spaces in the story. Tolkien is a great example of an author dedicated to his story, taking the time to create a world that has density and depth. I wish that someday, I can paint a detailed picture of the world that only I know to share it with others as well. voted up!

M. T. Dremer (author) from United States on December 20, 2011:

Jeri Sheppard - It can definitely work for science fiction. Any time that you want to delve into the back story of a new world, a creation myth is a great place to start. Thanks for the comment!

Jeri Sheppard on December 20, 2011:

Just stumbled across this Hub, and I have to say it's very useful. I lean more towards science fiction in my own writing, and I find that this can be applied to that genre as well. You didn't just magically have a ship in space without something happening to put it there, after all. Especially helpful for creating alien worlds as well.

M. T. Dremer (author) from United States on September 07, 2011:

kdupree - You're welcome, thanks for the comment!

kdupree on September 07, 2011:

Entertaining hub. Thanks for sharing this information.

M. T. Dremer (author) from United States on June 17, 2011:

Spock7418880 - Thank you. A lot of ideas I come up with for long term stories and mythologies revolve around human corruption, or at least the perception that humans are corrupt. I'm not sure how a psychologist would interpret that, but I think it has served me well in writing. :D Thanks for the comment!

Spock7418880 from Canada on June 16, 2011:

I like the idea of gods leaving because humanity became corrupt. That's a great way to justify the existence of gods despite their absence from the actual story.

M. T. Dremer (author) from United States on May 22, 2011:

Brett.Tesol - It definitely helps to make writing flow when you already have back stories to draw from. And, like you said, it also makes it more believable (readers can see when you're just making stuff up on the spot). Thanks for the compliment!

Brett C from Asia on May 22, 2011:

Great article, good info for developing a story, adding twists and making it all seem believable to the reader.

Brian Patry - I'm glad I could help. The nice thing about writing a creation myth (or any detailed back story) is that it fills in future story holes that you might never even have thought of. Thanks for the comment!

Brian Patry from Montreal, Canada on May 22, 2011:

Great article. It'll help me flesh out some holes in a story I'm writing.

M. T. Dremer (author) from United States on May 12, 2011:

Rusty - Thank you. I try to give good examples so people can see how the techniques would be applied. The last thing I want to do is make the process sound boring.

Rusty C. Adore on May 11, 2011:

Some of the examples you list in this article would make awesome stories. Good article. Voted up.

M. T. Dremer (author) from United States on May 11, 2011:

CJ Andrews - Thank you for the compliment!

Garrett Mickley - Glad I could help. There are definitely many applications for a creation myth and a well developed video game is definitely one of them. Thanks for the comment!

Garrett Mickley from Jupiter, Florida on May 11, 2011:

I used to write fiction for fun and I got out of it, but I'd really like to get back in to it in the form of video game writing. This helps a lot. Thanks! Great hub

Crafting an essay title is like designing the cover of a book – it's the first thing your professors see, setting the stage for what's inside. As such, the title is crucial because it's the reader's first impression. In this guide, we'll explore why a good essay title matters, offer tips to help you learn how to title an essay and provide examples to illustrate which titles work and which don't.

The Importance of a Good Essay Title

The significance of a good essay title cannot be overstated. Beyond its role as a mere label, a compelling title serves as a powerful tool for drawing your professor’s attention. A good title not only encapsulates the essence of the essay but also reflects the author's voice and perspective. It sets the tone for the entire piece, guiding readers in their interpretation and understanding of the content. Moreover, a well-crafted title can enhance the credibility and authority of the essay, signalling that the author has invested thought and care into their work.

How to Write a Good Title for Your Essay

Crafting a good title requires a blend of creativity, precision, and strategic thinking. To create an effective title, consider the following tips:

  • Brainstorm Ideas : Begin by brainstorming keywords, phrases, and concepts related to your essay topic. Explore different angles and perspectives that encapsulate the essence of your argument or analysis.
  • Consider the Audience : Reflect on your target audience and their interests, preferences, and expectations. Tailor your title to resonate with your intended readership, striking a balance between familiarity and intrigue.
  • Capture the Essence : Reports often incorporate tables, charts, graphs, and other visual aids to enhance the presentation of data and facilitate understanding.
  • Evoke Emotion or Intrigue : Tap into the emotional or intellectual curiosity of your readers by crafting a title that evokes emotion, prompts reflection, or poses a compelling question. Consider using provocative language, vivid imagery, or rhetorical devices to capture readers' attention.
  • Revise and Refine: : Once you've generated potential titles, take time to revise and refine them. Experiment with different word choices, phrasings, and structures until you find a title that resonates and feels cohesive with the content of your essay.

Characteristics of a Good Title

A good title shares several key characteristics:

Descriptive : Clearly communicates the topic or main idea of the essay. Engaging : Captures the reader's attention and sparks curiosity. Concise : Succinctly summarises the content without being overly long or verbose. Relevant : Directly relates to the content and theme of the essay. Original : Avoids clichĂŠs and generic phrases. Try to strive for originality and creativity.

Essay Title Examples (Good vs. Bad)

Let's examine additional examples of good and bad essay titles to illustrate these principles:

Good Title : "Exploring Identity: The Intersection of Culture and Self-Perception" Bad Title : "Essay on Identity"

The good title invites readers to explore complex questions surrounding identity and self-perception, fostering curiosity and engagement. In contrast, the bad title lacks specificity and fails to capture the richness and depth of the essay's subject matter.

Good Title : "Breaking Barriers: The Evolution of Women's Rights in the 21st Century" Bad Title : "Essay on Women's Rights"

The good title is engaging and suggests a narrative, while the bad title is a little bland and lacks imagination.

Writing a Catchy Title for Your Essay

To craft a catchy title, consider employing the following strategies:

Wordplay and Alliteration : Incorporate puns, alliteration, or clever wordplay to make your title memorable and attention-grabbing.

Question or Provocation : Pose a thought-provoking question or statement that challenges readers' assumptions or prompts them to reconsider their perspectives.

Use of Imagery and Metaphor : Invoke vivid imagery or metaphorical language that evokes emotion, stimulates the senses, or conveys abstract concepts in concrete terms.

Surprise Element : Introduce an unexpected twist or element of surprise that captures readers' attention and leaves them eager to learn more.

Getting your wording just right.

Paraphrasing is a natural part of the writing process as it helps you clarify your thinking and suit your words to your audience. Using a Paraphrase Tool helps structure and streamline this work, and our paraphrase tool offers 20 modes, many of them free, for accomplishing just this. The 20 modes we offer are diverse, including a summarize tool, a free grammar checker, a mode to simplify text, and a sentence shortener. There are sentence rephrasers and paraphrase rephrase tools, and we pride ourselves on having both, since our reword generator accounts for context at both the sentence and paragraph levels.

When you google paraphrase you will get a variety of results, from a free Paraphrase Tool , to an article spinner, to a general phrase tool, and it can be hard to determine which of these rephrase tools will best help you complete your work. If you simply need to get a word rephrase, that is, reword only small elements within the sentence, many tools will suffice, but there is the risk that you end up with a tool that does not consider context and produces very awkward and ungrammatical sentences. Rephrasing is very much an art, and we’ve built our paraphrase bot to produce the most correct results in 20 modes in over 100 languages, making it the best paraphrasing tool at an exceptionally low cost. So whether you need to paraphrase deutsch, paraphrase greek, or paraphrase bahasa melayu, the next time you think, I need something to paraphrase this for me, you’ll know where to turn.

From keywords to paragraphs

Generating paragraphs with unique ideas can be challenging, and too often writers get stuck at this stage of the writing process. With our paragraph tool, you can enter keywords and let our AI generate paragraphs for you, so that you can have something to work with, refine the output, and become more engaged in your writing.

A paragraph generator creates links between your ideas, such that the output is sensible, unique, and stimulating, very close to what you would expect a thoughtful human paragraph writer to produce.

Paragraph makers are nice, but what about a short story generator? Because our AI is generalized, it serves a story generator, an essay generator, a poem generator, and much more. To generate compelling stories, you should provide the story generator with useful keywords from which it can develop plot elements, including characters, setting details, and any situational information. To generate reasonably good essays, you should likewise provide the essay maker with details around argumentative positions and any other pertinent ideas. If you more specifically want an introduction paragraph generator or conclusion paragraph generator, you can provide starter text and keywords that will best enable our essay creator to produce them.

You may well ask, “is this essay generator free?” Everything on this site is free within a 3-day trial, so you can test and develop confidence in our products. You may also be wondering where this is an essay automatic writer or if it will take a while to get results. All results appear within a matter of seconds, so you can move through your work as quickly as possible.

You may have professional needs for creating paragraphs as well, such as those needed for cover letter. Most of the time a cover letter template includes information that is not relevant to you; by using your own keywords, we can produce cover letter examples that are relevant to your use case and often require very little editing. By using this service, you can also learn how to write a cover letter and achieve the cover letter format you need.

Plagiarism checker free

Like everything else on our site, you can check plagiarism free within a trial, which is a great opportunity for those who want to check a paper for plagiarism without committing to paying before they see results. This free plagiarism checker is great for students and clearly indicates how to check for plagiarism by highlighting areas of similarity between the two texts. Just to be sure you are not accidentally plagiarizing, be sure to check all of your paraphrases as well.

On Tech: A.I.

Applying to college here’s how a.i. tools might hurt, or help..

ChatGPT might change the application essay forever.

title for creation story essay

By Natasha Singer

I spent the last week talking with university officials, teachers and high school seniors about the dreaded college admissions essay.

I cover education technology at The Times. And I’ve been thinking a lot about how artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, which can manufacture school essays and other texts, might reshape the college application process.

I was particularly interested to learn whether admissions officials were rejiggering their essay questions — or even reconsidering personal essays altogether.

Amid a deluge of high school transcripts and teacher recommendations, admissions officers often use students’ writing samples to identify applicants with unique voices, experiences, ideas and potential. How might that change now that many students are using A.I. chatbots to brainstorm topics, generate rough drafts and hone their essays?

To find out, I contacted admissions officials at more than a dozen large state universities, Ivy League schools and small private colleges, including Juan Espinoza , the director of undergraduate admissions at Virginia Tech.

Right now, he told me, many universities are still trying to figure out how the A.I. technologies work and what they mean for the admissions process.

Pride Month has started but what does that mean? A look at what it is, how it's celebrated

Pride Month has officially started as of June 1 and there’s a lot to celebrate.

Throughout history, people who identify with the LGBTQ+ community have struggled to gain equal rights within and to overcome adversity and discrimination.

But what is Pride Month exactly? Here's a look at the history of how it came to be and how it is celebrated.

Rainbow flag meaning: A brief history lesson on how the Pride flag came to be

What is Pride Month?

Pride Month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York and celebrates the LGBTQ community and the fight for equal rights.

The Stonewall Uprising began on June 28, 1969 , when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a prominent gay bar in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. The protests that followed are credited with a shift in LGBTQ+ activism in the U.S.

The following year saw some of the first Pride parades in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. Despite the pivotal role transgender people and women of color played in the riots, including trans activist Marsha P. Johnson , they were largely excluded from early Pride celebrations.

"The reality is that most of the folks on the front lines at the Stonewall uprising were trans women, trans women of color, other people of color, butch lesbians,” Cathy Renna, Communications Director for the National LGBTQ Task Force, told USA TODAY in 2022. “And yet somehow, the power that was coming together ... to put together Pride events was from cisgender , gay white men.”

Today, Pride Month presents an opportunity for visibility and community. In addition to celebrating LGBTQ love and joy, it’s also a time to highlight important policy and resource issues the community faces. In 2021, NYC Pride banned law enforcement presence at Pride events through 2025 because of escalating violence "against marginalized groups, specifically BIPOC and trans communities."

This year, anti-trans legislation is growing across the country. Anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric online has also lead to threats at schools and hospitals and to trans communities , USA TODAY found.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, 130 bills targeting trans rights have been filed and 325 anti-LGBTQ+ bills have been proposed in 2024. More than 650 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in 2023.

When was Pride Month created?

The first Pride marches in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago happened on June 28, 1970, the first anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

In New York, thousands marched from Greenwich Village to Central Park in what is widely considered the first Pride parade in the U.S.

But even before the first Pride parades, the gay rights movement was beginning to gain traction all over the country. In 1950, for example, activist Harry Hay founded the Mattachine Society, the first national gay rights organization. And in 1955, the first lesbian rights organization, the Daught ers of Bilitis , was founded.

The year 1965 saw the first “Reminder Day,” an annual picketing event outside of Philadelphia’s Independence Hall calling attention to the lack of civil rights for the LGBTQ+ community. In 1966, the Mattachine Society staged a “sip-in” at a Greenwich Village bar after the New York Liquor Authority banned serving gay patrons because they were “disorderly,” PBS reports. And in 1966, the Compton's Cafeteria riot began when a police officer manhandled a transgender customer at a San Francisco eatery. This led to the founding of the National Transsexual Counseling Unit. As the LGBTQ+ rights movement grew, the community turned away from outdated terms like transsexual and homosexual to transgender, gay and lesbian. While many consider these terms offensive, some still use them to describe their identities.

The Christopher Street Liberation Day March on June 28, 1970 , marked a shift from politeness to pride. In earlier protests, the “Homophile Movement” of the 1950s and 1960s focused on respectability – dressing in suits and skirts and carrying signs in protest. Post-Stonewall riots didn’t come with a dress code or tone requirement.

“A new spirit has entered the struggle for homosexual freedom – a new spirit both militant in tone and revolutionary in orientation,” a 1970 Gay Liberation Front flyer reads. “Homosexuals at last have realized that they will never be able to be liberated by politely asking the system. Freedom is never given – it must be taken.”

What does LGBTQ+ stand for?

  • B: Bisexual
  • T: Transgender
  • Q: Queer, or sometimes questioning
  • +: Encompasses other identities under the rainbow umbrella

Major Pride parades across the U.S.

Here’s a glimpse at the dates and themes of some of the country’s biggest pride celebrations:

  • Provincetown, MA: May 31-June 2
  • Washington, D.C.: June 8 ( Parade ) and June 9 (Festival). The 2024 theme is "Totally Radical."
  • Los Angeles: June 9 (Parade) and June 8 (LA Pride Festival). The 2024 theme is “Power in Pride.”

Lawmakers mark the start to Pride Month on social media

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, President Joe Biden writes a message to the LGBTQ+ community.

For generations, LGBTQI+ Americans have summoned the courage to live proudly – even when it meant putting their lives at risk. This Pride Month, we recommit to realizing the promise of America for all, to celebrating LGBTQI+ people, and to taking pride in the example they set. pic.twitter.com/d9cBiGoKCr — President Biden (@POTUS) June 1, 2024

“For generations, LGBTQI+ Americans have summoned the courage to live proudly – even when it meant putting their lives at risk,” Biden wrote in the post. “This Pride Month, we recommit to realizing the promise of America for all, to celebrating LGBTQI+ people, and to taking pride in the example they set.”

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) shares the progress that California has made regarding LGBTQ+ rights on X.

Always proud to represent San Francisco, especially during #PrideMonth as we mark our progress from Compton’s Cafeteria to City Hall, fighting HIV/AIDS to uplifting trans rights. We embrace love, advance freedoms and - when we win - will enshrine LGBTQ+ Equality into law. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ pic.twitter.com/1XqeBZSb4U — Nancy Pelosi (@TeamPelosi) June 1, 2024

“Always proud to represent San Francisco, especially during #PrideMonth as we mark our progress from Compton’s Cafeteria to City Hall, fighting HIV/AIDS to uplifting trans rights,” Pelosi wrote. “We embrace love, advance freedoms and - when we win - will enshrine LGBTQ+ Equality into law. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️”

In a X post, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) posted a video discussing Pride Month and things that have happened in recent years.

Happy Pride Month, Georgia! Let’s take the month of June to recognize the strides we’ve made for equality, as well as the contributions, resilience, and joy of our LGBTQ+ brothers & sisters. 🏳️‍🌈 pic.twitter.com/1y854C9trS — Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (@SenatorWarnock) June 1, 2024

“While we have made incredible progress since the Stonewall riots over 50 years ago, including codifying marriage equality law. It is important to remember that that progress isn’t linear. Over the past few years we have sadly seen terrible attacks at the state and local level towards transgender Americans. We’ve seen members of the LGBTQ community ostracized and persecuted, often by craven politicians, for short term, political purposes," Warnock said. "All the while they are simply living as their most authentic selves. But that cannot weaken our resolve to keep working to build what Dr. King called the ‘beloved community’ where all of God’s children are embraced, no matter who they are, where they come from or who they love.”
