English Dub Season Review: The Case Study of Vanitas Season One

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Long ago, a vampire named Vanitas was born under a blue moon and was thus called a curse-bearer. Legend tells that he wrote a grimoire called the Book of Vanitas and that its powers can be used on those vampires who are of the crimson moon. Fast-forward to the present day and a human named Vanitas has possession of the book. He partners up with a vampire called Noe, and the two of them work together to advance Vanitas’s agenda. From evading the church’s vampire hunting agents to falling in love, the two of them are up to something wild each week as they make their way through 19th century France.

Set in 19th century Paris, The Case Study of Vanitas tells the story of an eccentric man child called Vanitas and the vampires and humans he meets throughout his travels. It’s a trippy road trip through Paris, England, and otherworldly vampiric realms—and it’s also very sexy (if you’re into vampires of course). Whether it’s good or not is another story, and it’s a little hard to answer because it’s going to depend very much on your ability to overlook how annoying Vanitas is.

The basic plot is that Vanitas is a human who’s goal is to find the so-called curse bearing vampires who have been afflicted by the misfortune. He does this via a magical tome called the Book of Vanitas, which was written by a long-gone vampire also named Vanitas who was born under a blue moon. He meets up with a vampire named Noe, and the two of them form a kind of frenemy bond. From then on, it’s the two of them going on new adventures each week. The quality varies depending on the episode. The show does action fairly well, and some of the more fight-oriented scenes are fun to watch. The romantic arcs are much less well done, although I might be biased since I’m not a huge fan of vampiric romance, which at least according to this show, involves a lot of blood.

The anime is based on a manga by Jun Mochizuki. It’s been said that one the trademarks of the original manga was the tension-filled drip of information and backstory, but I don’t feel like the anime really did this justice. Instead of a slow build, the series seems to mostly ignore questions of logic and backstory—until it doesn’t, and then it force feeds you flashbacks for entire episodes. This makes it hard to keep the pace interesting, and I often found that I would lose what little excitement I was feeling because the show would suddenly take a detour, like when it abandons Vanitas and Noe at the party with Charlatan in favor a melodramatic tale from Noe’s past.

The production quality of the show is fine, but nothing special. Bones is the studio that worked on it, and they’ve made a lot of very well respected series in the past. Vanitas probably won’t go down in history as one of them. It doesn’t look bad, but it none of its visuals really appealed to me very much and I couldn’t really get a feel for the art direction of the show. Some of the character designs are fun, especially Ronaldo and Dr. Moreau, but those were the highlights for me. The English dub is serviceable, but some of the dialogue can sound stilted and off—although that might just be part of the show itself, since The Case Study of Vanitas is certainly one to lean into weirdness.

All in all, Vanitas isn’t really the kind of show that appeals to me. It takes its ingredients (vampires, 19th century Paris, romance) and kind of throws them around in hopes that something will be born out of the chaos. Chaotic shows are well and good, but usually there has to be at least one character to sort of anchor the plot, and none of the characters here really did that for me. Noe is presumably the one who we should be rooting for alongside Vanitas, but his blind loyalty and odd naivety toward Vanitas didn’t really endear him to me as our main character. About half of the character in the show suck blood, and I would have to say the show itself also sucks.

The Case Study of Vanitas is a 2021 anime series from Tokyo MX. Directed by Tomoyuki Itamura and produced by Studio Bones, the show is an adaptation of a manga series written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. Set in 19th century Paris, The Case Study of Vanitas follows the adventures of a young vampire known as Noé Archiviste. Despite being a vampire, Noé is unlike many others of his kind, as he was born with the ability to read objects and memories. He has come to Paris to find his Grimoire, the magical book that holds all of his knowledge and powers.

One day, while wandering the streets of Paris, Noé meets a mysterious, charismatic vampire named Vanitas. Vanitas is a man with a mission, and he claims to have the power to cure vampires of their curse. He carries with him a magical book called the Book of Vanitas, which he claims is the key to curing vampirism.

Despite being skeptical, Noé agrees to help Vanitas on his mission. Along the way, they encounter many other vampires, including the wealthy and powerful members of the aristocracy. They also encounter other powerful beings, such as werewolves and demons.

The Case Study of Vanitas is not just a story about vampires and their quests for power and immortality. It is also a story about friendship, loyalty, and the search for meaning and purpose in life. Noé and Vanitas have a complicated relationship, with plenty of teasing and bickering, but they ultimately come to respect and rely on each other.

The show features an all-star cast of voice actors, including Kaito Ishikawa as Noé Archiviste, Natsuki Hanae as Vanitas, and Inori Minase as Jeanne, a young woman who becomes entangled in their adventures. Ishikawa and Hanae are both well-known for their work in popular anime series such as Haikyu!! and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, respectively.

The animation in The Case Study of Vanitas is top-notch, with beautiful backgrounds and character designs. The show's action scenes are well-animated and exciting, and the character interactions are always engaging. The show's soundtrack is also worth mentioning, featuring a mix of classical and modern music that perfectly complements the show's Victorian setting.

Fans of the manga series will be pleased to know that the anime adaptation stays faithful to the source material. The show covers the first six volumes of the manga, and while it does take some liberties with the pacing and structure, it does a good job of capturing the spirit of the original story.

Overall, The Case Study of Vanitas is a must-watch for fans of vampire stories, action-adventure anime, and beautiful animation. The manga went on hiatus in June 2022, and resumed in May 2023.

Yen Press has been publishing the manga simultaneously in English since its debut, and it describes the first volume:

Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend's salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him...in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind?

Mochizuki ( Pandora Hearts , Crimson-Shell ) launched the manga in Gangan Joker in December 2015. Square Enix published the 11th volume on April 22.

Netflix, Ava DuVernay settle defamation lawsuit brought by 'When They See Us' prosecutor

A va DuVernay and Netflix have settled a defamation lawsuit filed by a former New York City prosecutor who disapproved of her portrayal in the acclaimed limited series "When They See Us."

Defendants Netflix and DuVernay released a joint statement Tuesday with the plaintiff, Linda Fairstein, outlining the terms of the settlement. As part of the deal, Netflix has agreed to relocate the following disclaimer from the end credits to the beginning of the show.

“While the motion picture is inspired by actual events and persons, certain characters, incidents, locations, dialogue, and names are fictionalized for the purposes of dramatization," the disclaimer reads.

The Los Gatos, Calif.-based streaming giant has also promised to donate $1 million to the Innocence Project, a social justice organization that advocates for people who are wrongly incarcerated. Fairstein will not receive any money as part of the agreement.

DuVernay issued her own statement saying that Fairstein "had her husband call to pull the plug" on the lawsuit days before they were scheduled to appear in front of a New York City jury. The filmmaker said that she and Netflix rejected Fairstein's original demands, which included "a cash payout" and a disclaimer stating that "everything to do with her in the show was fabricated."

"I believe that Linda Fairstein was responsible for the investigation and prosecution of the Central Park Jogger case that resulted in the wrongful conviction of five innocent Black and Brown boys," DuVernay said in her statement.

"Linda Fairstein decided that she was not willing to face a jury of her peers. It’s a phenomenon that often happens with bullies. When you stand up to them, unafraid, they often take their ball and go home."

Fairstein said in a statement that "the decision to conclude this fight was not an easy one" and that in the end, the defamation case "was not about 'winning' or about any financial restitution" but about defending her reputation.

"It was about setting the historical record straight that the villainous caricature invented by the defendants and portrayed on screen was not me," Fairstein said.

"That truth will be reinforced every time a viewer goes to watch the series ever again due to Netflix’s agreement in the settlement to place a disclaimer at the front of the series."

Created and directed by DuVernay , "When They See Us" tells the story of the Central Park Five, a group of Black and Brown teenage boys wrongfully convicted in 1989 of raping and attacking a female jogger in New York City. The quintet was exonerated and released from prison in 2002.

Fairstein, who worked for the prosecution in the Central Park Five case, is played in the Emmy-winning courtroom drama by Felicity Huffman. The ex-attorney sued Netflix and DuVernay in March 2020 for allegedly depicting her "in a false and defamatory manner in nearly every scene ... in which she appears."

The complaint further alleged that "When They See Us" unfairly portrayed Fairstein "as a racist, unethical villain who is determined to jail innocent children of color at any cost."

At the time it was filed, Netflix dismissed the complaint as "frivolous" while pledging to "vigorously defend" the show, DuVernay and writer Attica Locke.

After "When They See Us" debuted on Netflix, Fairstein was dropped by her literary and film agency, as well as her publishers in the United States and the United Kingdom. The lawsuit also said that Fairstein lost consulting and public speaking jobs because of the series.

"When They See Us" was nominated for 16 Emmy Awards and nine NAACP Image Awards.

Linda Fairstein , the controversial former prosecutor involved in the Central Park Five case, has settled her defamation lawsuit against Netflix and Ava DuVernay over the 2019 docuseries “ When They See Us .”

Fairstein sued in 2020, alleging that she was falsely portrayed as a racist villain who orchestrated the convictions of five innocent young men. The case was set to go to trial next week in federal court in Manhattan.

In the settlement, Netflix agreed to donate $1 million to the Innocence Project. Fairstein will not receive money.

Fairstein said in a statement that the litigation has revealed the truth about the case. She cited a judge’s ruling last fall denying Netflix’s motion for summary judgment, which held that several scenes in the series were not backed up by the historical record, and that a reasonable jury could find them defamatory.

“This is what this case was all about — not about ‘winning’ or about any financial restitution, but about my reputation and that of my colleagues,” Fairstein said. “It was about setting the historical record straight that the villainous caricature invented by the defendants and portrayed on screen was not me.”

DuVernay also issued a statement , saying that Fairstein’s husband reached out to “pull the plug” on the lawsuit just days before trial was to begin.

“After years of legal wrangling and millions of dollars spent, she walked away with no payment to her or her lawyers of any kind, rather than face cross examination before a New York jury as to her conduct and character,” DuVernay said.

Netflix also issued a brief statement, joined by DuVernay, Fairstein and co-writer Attica Locke.

“The parties announce that they have resolved this lawsuit. Netflix will donate $1 million to the Innocence Project. Ms. Fairstein will not receive any money as part of this settlement.”

Fairstein was featured most prominently in the first episode, where she said that “every young Black male who was in the park last night is a suspect” in the attack.

“Let’s get an army of blue up in Harlem,” her character says at one point. “You go into those projects and you stop every little thug you see.”

Fairstein argued that the show falsely portrayed her as directing the law enforcement response, and that it was defamatory to allege that she led a racist roundup.

Robin Swicord, the screenwriter who wrote drafts of some of the scenes, said in a declaration that the criminal justice system was set up as the antagonist in the show, and that Fairstein was “the face of that system.”

Fairstein was also portrayed as creating a timeline of the crime, and then shoehorning facts to fit the timeline, with the implication that she was the driving force behind the wrongful prosecution.

In his summary judgment ruling, Judge P. Kevin Castel noted that there is no evidence in the record suggesting that Fairstein created the timeline.

When asked about her source for the claim during a deposition, DuVernay noted that the show “is not a documentary.”

“So the movements, dialogue, actions of the characters are not pinned to, connected to, backed up by specific pieces of information,” DuVernay said.

Netflix argued in its summary judgment motion that the portrayal was “substantially true,” and that dramatizations should be afforded some “leeway” and should not be held to journalistic standards of accuracy.

In his ruling, the judge rejected that argument, finding that a jury could interpret the filmmakers’ actions as deliberately twisting the record to defame Fairstein.

“There is evidence that, by opting to portray Fairstein as the series villain who was intended to embody the perceived injustices of a broader system, defendants reverse-engineered plot points to attribute actions, responsibilities and viewpoints to Fairstein that were not hers and are unsupported in defendants’ substantial body of research materials,” Castel wrote.

Fairstein continued to defend the Central Park Five prosecution even after DNA evidence showed another man was culpable, and the five were exonerated. The five defendants — Korey Wise, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam and Antron McCray — were awarded a $41 million civil settlement in 2014.

DuVernay said in her statement that Fairstein’s settlement proposal included a payout to Fairstein, as well as a disclaimer stating that “everything to do with her in the show was fabricated.”

“We refused both,” DuVernay said.

She added that the two sides did not agree on a confidentiality provision, which she said, “allows me to share what I feel about her claims for the first time.”

Andrew Miltenberg, an attorney who represented Fairstein, said that DuVernary’s account of the settlement discussions was misleading. He said DuVernay’s attorney was not directly involved.

“There was a typical back and forth over a few days about a potential settlement,” he said. “Initial discussions included a request for Linda’s attorneys’ fees and expenses. Not money for Linda.”

After the series was released, Fairstein was dropped by her literary agency and the publisher of her crime novels. She also faced significant online backlash and was forced to resign from several boards.

Kara Gorycki, another attorney who represented Fairstein, said in a statement that her client had stood up against “one of the world’s largest and most powerful media companies.”

“It is our sincere hope that this settlement serves as a wakeup call to Netflix and other media companies that they have a responsibility to show fidelity to the truth when portraying real human beings and should not attempt to profit from the utterly false villainization of people, as they did in Linda’s case,” Gorycki said.

The disclaimer, stating that certain elements had been fictionalized, was already included in the end credits of the show. Fairstein’s lawyers had argued that it passed briefly, and that viewers watching on “autoplay” would not see it.

Had the case gone to trial, Fairstein, DuVernay, Swicord and others likely would have been called to testify, offering their perspectives on the boundaries of fictionalization of real-world events.

Because Fairstein is a public figure, her lawyers would have been required to prove not only that the depictions were false, but also that the filmmakers knew they were false or recklessly disregarded the truth. They would also have had to show that the series did appreciable harm to Fairstein’s reputation.

“We are confident that we would have won,” Miltenberg said in a statement.

He argued that the case was “precedent setting,” and that its impact “will be heard throughout the media industry, as Netflix and others feel compelled to take far greater care to represent real people with truthfulness and integrity, rather than dehumanizing them and turning them into fake caricatures.”

Bart Williams and Natalie Spears, the attorneys who represented Netflix, DuVernay and Locke, countered in a statement of their own that any claim that Fairstein was vindicated is “ludicrous.”

“The outcome was a total victory for Netflix and its creative partners,” the attorneys said.

In her statement, DuVernay said that Fairstein had “painted herself as the victim.”

In response, Miltenberg said that DuVernay was avoiding the key issue in the defamation case.

“The key fact, which Ms. DuVernay regrettably does not contend with, is that the court found that she reverse engineered facts to ‘invent’ a villainous character,” he said. “Instead, she insists the portrayal in the film is fact, which stands in contrast to the disclaimer that will now be displayed before each episode of the series acknowledging that elements of the film are ‘fictionalized.'”

DuVernary also thanked Netflix “for its unwavering support of artists” and for making the contribution to the Innocence Project.

“I hope that one day Linda Fairstein can come to terms with the part she played in this miscarriage of justice and finally accept responsibility,” she said.
