Best ways to help with math homework

The math your child brings home may look different from the math you remember doing as a child. How can you help if you don’t understand it? And if you do understand it, how can you guide him without just giving him the answer?

Here are some helpful tips to guide your child:

  • Go over the directions with her and find out what she does and doesn’t understand about the assignment.
  • Encourage him to find another math student he can call for help if he’s unclear about the assignment or wants to review a class lesson.
  • Ask her where she thinks she should begin.
  • Ask him if he can find information in his notes to solve the problem.
  • Ask if there is a similar problem in her textbook or one she did in class.
  • Suggest that he draw or make a model to explain his thinking.
  • Ask more guiding questions as she progresses, such as “What should you do next?” “Is this answer reasonable?” “Did you answer the question?” “Can you solve it another way?”
  • If he struggles to understand the subject matter or has trouble keeping up with the amount of homework assigned, ask his teacher for recommendations.
  • Suggest looking for homework help online . Math.com has math help for parents and students.
  • Remember to resist the temptation to do the homework for her.
  • The greatest impact on a child’s attitude about math is the parent’s attitude about math. Show an interest in math and point out to your child the many ways you use math in your everyday life. Help your child understand that every parent is a mathematician.

10 Best FREE Websites to Help Parents with Math Homework

Holy crap .

That math homework is H-A-R-D! The last time that you tried to do that kind of math, you were the same age as your kid.

And equally lost.

But your child need help, and you have no clue. Now what?

Check out these FREE websites for math help, grades K-12!

Khan academy.

This is the BEST website , in my opinion. Not only can you learn about your child’s math homework, you can watch a video on it. Your child can also join their FREE learning program. It helps kids (and parents) to learn new math skills, or practice things they already know.

Ms. Munafo’s YouTube Channel

This teacher’s YouTube channel is simple, clean and basic. Ms. Munafo explains all things fourth grade math using easy to understand language and visuals. She gives clear explanations, and shows several examples. Even if your child is past fourth grade, getting some insight on the easier things might help everyone learn more!

Check out this video on fractions:

Homeschool Math

This website offers FREE lessons from PreK-Middle/High School across many core concepts. There are visuals with clear written explanations, free worksheets, and ideas for games or activities. If you need something to print, this might be the place.

SoftSchools

This is another great all-in-one website: concepts broken down, online games, free worksheets. Seriously awesome! I use worksheets from here in my classroom regularly.

This won’t help YOU explain math, but it will help your child get a good foundation in the basic skills (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing). Yes, it is a drill website, but I love it! The “drills” are set up like video games: fun and engaging. Kids are racing only against themselves or the clock. And students can’t move on until they have mastered the current concept. Plus, it’s FREE!

Free Math Help

This is more for the middle and high school crowd, and it’s great. The explanations are written out, so you could print out pages to serve as reminders. There are also visuals to help students understand what a certain kind of problem might look like.

Doctor Genius

This site covers students in grade K-6, and hits on the big concepts. It’s not so much explanations for parents as it is online practice for kids. Once you choose a topic, you can select a difficulty level (noted by the dots to the left of each option).

Algebra.Help

For kids (and parents) in grade 7-12, this is where it’s at. The front page has all the topics listed based on concept. When you click on a topic, like Factoring, it gives you a quick overview. And then walks you through the concept, step-by-step. With examples. LOVE this!

Sheppard Software

Also not a website to LEARN, but to practice. This is a great way to gamify tough concepts and make math a little bit more fun.

Cliff’s Notes

You might remember these for SAT prep or helping you through AP English, but now it’s so much more! These are definitely aimed at people with a good grasp of language. So, maybe not for your elementary aged child to read, but for you to read before helping your kiddo. The guides start right around when the math really gets tough: fourth/fifth grade.

Did I miss something? If your fav math site or YouTube channel is not listed, leave it in the comments!

As a bonus, all the sites listed above are FREE. Yes, FREE! And you can use them at home or (hooray!) in the classroom.

Common Core Math: How to Help When Your Child's Homework Gives You Anxiety

Common Core Math: How to Help When Your Child's Homework Gives You Anxiety

FamilyEducation Editorial Staff

familyeducation logo

Number bonding? Skip counting? Does your child's Common Core math homework make your head spin ? You're not alone.

Plenty of parents who grew up learning how to add and subtract with older teaching methods now look at their children's Common Core homework with a sense of panic, or at least mild bewilderment. Rest assured, you have not forgotten how to do first-grade math.

The concepts themselves haven't changed (two plus two will always equal four, no matter which way it's taught) — merely the method of explaining and presenting them has. So, take a deep breath, relax, and follow these tips to help your child with his Common Core math homework problems, even when you're not quite sure what's going on.

Study Up on Basic Math Concepts

Mom Stressed Out By Common Core

Yes, you may have to do a little homework yourself in order to help your child with his own, but it will be worth it. Many school districts now offer Common Core workshops specially geared toward parents who want to be able to help their kids with their homework. There are also books and online guides where you can learn all about the new standards and see sample homework problems.

Consider forming a support group with other parents in your child's class where you can all help each other out — parents who have been there before with their older children may be able to lend some expert advice!

Have Your Child Explain It to You

If your child is having trouble understanding her homework and you have no clue where to begin, start by looking over any of her notes or tutorials from the teacher on the lesson together. Then, ask your child to explain the concept to you. After all, when it comes to the Common Core, she's the expert!

Putting your child in the role of teacher might help her think about the material in a new way and come to a better understanding of it (or at the very least, it will help YOU understand it better so you can help her!). Once you're able to get a handle on what's going on with all the new terminology, it will be easier to help your child.

Don't Be Overly Involved with Homework Help

Child Doing Common Core Math Homework

It's one thing if you have a six-year-old struggling with number bonding. It's another thing entirely if you have an older child who is doing math you don't even remember existing. When it's not just the teaching methods but the concepts themselves that feel like a foreign language, sometimes the best you can do as a parent is to keep your child relaxed and focused on the assignment.

In fact, with any homework in general, experts have found that the more responsibility a parent takes in their child's homework, the less responsibility that child develops . Help him get started by reviewing the directions together and discussing the plan he'll take to complete the assignment, but let him do most of the work independently. If you notice signs of stress getting to him, have him walk away for a quick five-minute break.

If there's a problem he simply cannot solve, have him email the teacher with a question or leave a note on it to ask the teacher in class the next day. You can help him manage the anxiety of getting his homework done even if you're not quite an expert on the work itself.

Plan a Common Core Study Group Beyond the Classroom

Child Stressed Out By Common Core Math

A big part of the Common Core is learning to communicate with your peers and come up with solutions in groups. So, why not extend that practice into the homework?

If your child is stuck on a problem and you have no idea how to solve it, have her call a friend from class. They can work on finding the solution together, and they can each explain things that the other might be struggling with. If talking to a friend seems like it will be too likely to turn into social hour, there's also a plethora of homework help apps and websites available, like Khan Academy, which offers free videos and tutorials on just about every subject.

The more familiar you become with the terminology and methods used in Common Core math homework, the less intimidating it will feel. Though it can feel frustrating when your kids have no idea who My Dear Aunt Sally i,s and yet insist that you learn something called the "forgiveness method," it does become easier with a little practice. And who knows, maybe you'll even grow to love counting up and drawing arrays!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Get answers to common questions to resolve basic outstanding concerns without speaking to someone.

Do you specialize exclusively in mathematics?

Yes, we do. Mathnasium was established in 2002 and now operates nearly 1,000 learning centers nationwide, providing the best personalized math tutoring nearby. Larry, a teacher, a curriculum consultant, and Mathnasium’s expert on the team, spent years refining math teaching methods. We have designed fun and engaging techniques to help children understand math easily. And we have highly experienced and qualified math tutors who teach our after-school mathematics programs.

Will my child receive face-to-face instruction?

Yes! Not only does your child get the best math tutoring nearby, but they also receive face-to-face instruction. Whether your child takes online or in-center classes, our math tutors focus on the individual. There are no group lectures or classes. We assess each child’s math skills and abilities and customize the math curriculum to help them reach their goals. Your child will get targeted lessons, allowing them to master new material in the way they learn best.

How do you help students?

Our proven teaching method helps students build a strong base and expand their math understanding. Our math tutors encourage children to develop mental math abilities, number sense, and problem-solving skills. Mathnasium uses modern techniques and fun methods to help children fall in love with math instead of getting bored or terrified by lessons. We tailor our instruction to your child’s learning style and needs.

How will you address my child’s specific learning needs?

After our comprehensive assessment process, your child receives a fully customized learning plan. Our math experts will tailor their instruction to your child's individual learning needs and style.

Who develops your curriculum?

Mathnasium’s proprietary curriculum was created by qualified teachers and curriculum consultants whose goal was to make learning easy and approachable for students. Our techniques are different from traditional methods of using schoolbooks to teach children. All children are different, and we will adjust our techniques to provide the best math tutoring nearby. Mathnasium’s curriculum focuses on foundational understanding that helps students learn advanced methods. We also use games, activities, and rewards to make learning math fun for your child.

Will my child enjoy attending?

Of course! Children love to engage in fun activities that don’t require them to go through traditional math learning methods. Our math tutors capitalize on everyday experiences to allow children to learn concepts in a way that makes sense to them. Mathnasium’s teaching methods challenge children and encourage them to learn skills quickly. Our in-center activities and reward incentives also help to make Mathnasium a favorite tutoring system.

How does this approach compare with private tutoring?

Math tutors nearby might help children do homework and practice daily school lessons, but they aren’t always able to develop the important building blocks in students’ minds. Mathnasium uses a curriculum and methodology that has been proven through the success of thousands of students. The resources of a global organization and extensive training back our teaching methods. Mathnasium’s experts provide better and more focused instruction at an affordable cost.

Will you help my child with their math homework?

Our experts will provide homework help to your child during sessions. However, our core curriculum is centered around establishing a better understanding of math, which will enable kids to complete homework on their own in the future. Most of their time at Mathnasium will be spent on our curriculum, but time is set aside for help with homework at every session, as needed. Our math tutoring ensures that your child understands their homework instead of just getting through it. This takes the burden off parents and allows children to stay on track in school and score higher marks.

Will you give my child homework?

No! We don’t burden students with extra homework. Our expert instructors build a strong relationship with students, giving them efficient and effective guidance in their math tutoring sessions every day as they work on specific skills and make good progress during their time in the center. Adding homework would risk frustration and overload.

What happens during the initial assessment at Mathnasium?

At Mathnasium, we understand that assessments can sometimes feel stressful for students. That’s why we take a personalized and engaging approach to each assessment. We start by building rapport with your child, giving them a short center tour, and setting expectations. We conduct both a verbal and written assessment to identify your child’s strengths and areas for improvement as well as to gain a true understanding of how each student approaches and thinks about math. More importantly, our assessments don’t feel like a test – we use interactive methods to ensure your child feels comfortable and confident.

What type of questions are on the assessment?

We carefully craft our assessment questions to evaluate specific skills that are critical for success in math. Our assessments cover a wide range of math skills and concepts, including grade-level or subject-specific skills, number sense, and concepts unique to Mathnasium. We use a combination of verbal and written questions, and it's possible that some of the questions may cover topics your child hasn't yet learned in school. Our goal is to get a comprehensive understanding of your child's current math abilities, so we can create a personalized learning plan that meets their unique needs and goals.

A great set up to support and advance a child’s maths skills. David, Anna and the team are all incredibly friendly, helpful and more importantly engaging with the children. Highly recommend Mathnasium in Fulham.

100% recommend this! My son not only understood math but became of fan of it! However, overall I’m so amazed at how much of a confidence boost this gave him… he finally came out of his shell.

I would recommend Mathnasium milton keynes at the Countess Way to any parent whose child is struggling with maths , I have seen a massive improvement with my daughter in only a couple of months. Her confidence and enthusiasm to do maths has significantly improved and she is always more than happy to go to the centre. I am happy as a parent. Thank you guys for this amazing job.

We love the Dedicated tutors and individual curriculum that is offered by Mathnasium. Mr Eric is always quick to respond and ready to help. My some love learning math here.

We are fairly new to Mathnasium but it’s been great so far!

Best Math center and best teachers

We had a wonderful experience at Mathnasium, signed up for a summer program and are now looking to keep our daughter in weekly sessions as support for the school year. Johnathan and Vanessa were always thoughtful in their instructions and communication to us. Thank you all very much. It made a difference in our daughter’s confidence as she starts 5th grade and continues to build the right foundation on her way to middle school and beyond.

While the tutoring is not cheap, it has improved my daughter's understanding of chunking instructions and basic math that she did not learn during COVID-19. Rick is the best!!!

More than amazing! My 9 year old is excited to go and the hours are really flexible.

wonderful experience - my son loves to go!

Great instructors to challenge your student

The staff is awesome. Seem attentive and give parents updates. My daughter never says she doesn't want yo go.

We’ve been here almost 2 years and love the progress.

We were on in Portland for a short period of time, but my granddaughter learned a lot in math. The teachers are patient and very focused. They want the students to succeed. I hightly recommend the Portland Main Mathnasium program.

Mathnasium has helped our son reach a new level of confidence with math. We highly recommend!

My 8 year old daughter was already advanced for her age in maths. But realizing this is the time to help her develop skills that will last a lifetime, as well as have her competent well beyond classmates academically, made Mathnasium an easy decision. I am very, very happy with Mathnasium's assistance they're provided my daughter. The only thing I would change is, enrolling her sooner.

Outstanding teachers and management. They truly care! They always provide feedback and you can actually see the progress your child is making!

My son was being told to count on his fingers for addition in class. While this is valid start to math it isn't where you expect your 3rd grade child to be at. Especially when he tests in the top 2% of the school district for intelligence. He has an IEP but he isn't rated as needing assistance since he tested within his peers. To assist him we talked to family and friends. My brother in Illinois uses Mathnasium for his son and has seen amazing results. A friend from work who I admire told me about where his daughter worked as a tutor in Tulsa... Mathnasium again! After almost 2 years my son is going to be starting in a new math program for 5th grade that teaches math at an accelerated rate. I attribute this to South Tulsa Mathnasium. I love having multiple tutors available whenever we are there. This allows for multiple explanations and teaching methods that you see the light bulb when a child understands the way to work the problem themselves.

My daughter had fun while learning Great tutors

Our son was behind grade level and struggling with math throughout elementary school. We’d tried other types of tutoring before coming to Mathnasium in NW Reno. He’s been there 8 months and already made some significant improvements. The best part is that he enjoys going, where it was a struggle with our other attempts. They make it fun and effective, and we are very relieved and thankful.
