ஐ.டி நிறுவனத்தில் பணியாற்றும் உத்தமன் பிரதீப்பும் (பிரதீப் ரங்கநாதன்), நிகிதாவும் (இவனா) காதலிக்கிறார்கள். ‘உன்னை எனக்கு நல்லாத் தெரியும்’ என்று நம்பிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள், இருவரும். காதல் விவகாரம் நிகிதாவின் அப்பா வேணு சாஸ்திரிக்கு (சத்யராஜ்) தெரியவர, அவர் உத்தமனை அழைத்துப் பேசுகிறார். இருவரும் தங்கள் ஃபோனை ஒரே ஒரு நாள் மாற்றிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும், பிறகு சுமூகமாக எல்லாம் சென்றால் திருமணம் என நிபந்தனை விதிக்கிறார். அதன்படி மாற்றிக்கொள்கிறார்கள். இருவர் ஃபோனுக்குள்ளும் இருந்து பூதமாகக் கிளம்புகிறது, அவரவர் ரகசியங்கள். அது பெரும் மோதலாகிவிட, இறுதியில் ஒன்று சேர்ந்தார்களா, இல்லையா என்பதுதான் படம்.

அத்தியாவசியமாகிவிட்ட செல்ஃபோன்தான் பல அனாவசியங்களையும் அள்ளி வைத்திருக்கிறது என்பதையும் அதனால் ஏற்படும் அக்கப்போர்கள், வாழ்க்கையில் உண்டாக்கும் அராஜகங்களையும் ஆர்ப்பாட்டமில்லாத காட்சிகளின் மூலம் ரசனையாகச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார், இயக்குநர் பிரதீப் ரங்கநாதன். ‘மாடர்ன் டே’ காதலையும் நம்பிக்கையற்றுத் தடுமாறும் சந்தேகத்தையும் ஆழமாகவே பேசியிருக்கிறது, படம். அதற்குச் சுவாரசியமான, தெளிவான திரைக்கதையும் கதாபாத்திரத் தேர்வும் பலமாக உதவி இருக்கின்றன.

செல்ஃபோன்தான் ‘கான்செப்ட்’ என்பதால், அதன் உருவாக்கத்தில் தொடங்கும் ‘டைட்டில் கார்ட்’, மண்ணுக்குள் பூத்து வைக்கும் மாங்கொட்டை ‘இன்னும் வளரலையே’ என்று அடிக்கடிதோண்டி பார்க்கும் சிறுவன், அவனைப் போலவே வளர்ந்து கிளைமாக்ஸில் மரமாகி நின்று நம்பிக்கையைச் சொல்லும் விஷயத்தில், தன்னைத் தேர்ந்த இயக்குநராகவும் நிரூபித்திருக்கிறார், பிரதீப்.

‘கோமாளி’ மூலம் இயக்குநரான அவர், இதில் நாயகனாகவும் தன்னை வளர்த்திருக்கிறார். சில இடங்களில் தனுஷ் சாயல் தெரிந்தாலும், ‘இவர் வேற மாதிரி’ என புரிய வைத்து விடுகிறார் பல காட்சிகளில். காதலியின் தந்தை முன் பவ்யமாக அமர்ந்து பேசும்போது தெரிகிற கூச்சமும் தவிப்பும் பிறகு அதே காட்சி அவர் வீட்டில் ‘ரிபீட்’ ஆகும் போது வெளிக்காட்டும் தெனாவட்டும் மொத்தக் கவலையையும் அம்மாவிடம் கொட்டிக் கதறும்போதும் ஒரு நம்பிக்கை நட்சத்திரம் என்பதை எளிதாக உணர்த்துகிறது அவர் நடிப்பு.

காதலி என்பதைத் தாண்டி, இன்றைய இளம் பெண்களின் பிரதிபலிப்பாக இவானா, கவனிக்க வைக்கிறார். காதலன் பற்றிய ரகசியங்கள் அறிந்து, எரிந்து விழும்போது அவர் நடிப்பில் அத்தனை யதார்த்தம்.

யோகிபாபுவை சரியான ‘மீட்டரில்’ பயன்படுத்தி இருப்பதும், திருமணம் நிச்சயிக்கப்பட்ட ரவீனாவுக்கும் அவருக்குமானப் புரிதல் காட்சிகளும் தெளிவாக எழுதப்பட்ட திரைக்கதையின் தீராத பலம். வாட்ஸ் அப் குரூப்புக்கு ‘கிளி வெர்சஸ் கிங்காங்’ என டைட்டில் வைத்து உருவக் கேலி செய்யும் மனநிலைக்கு அவர் காட்டும் ரியாக்‌ஷனும் விளக்கமும் சென்டிமென்டாகவும் அமைந்துவிடுகிறது.

நாயகியின் கட்டுப்பாடான ‘ஆர்தோடக்ஸ்’ அப்பா சத்யராஜ், ‘எப்ப பாரு செல்போனு’ என்று செல்ல எரிச்சல் காட்டும் அம்மா ராதிகா உட்பட அனைவரும் பாத்திரம் உணர்ந்து நடித்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

காட்சிகளோடு ஒன்றிவிடச் செய்யும் யுவன் சங்கர் ராஜாவின் பின்னணி இசையும், கிளைமாக்ஸில் சித் ஸ்ரீராம் குரலில் வரும், ‘என்னை விட்டு உயிர் போனாலும்’ பாடலும் படத்துக்கு மேலும் உயிர் கொடுக்கின்றன. தினேஷ் புருஷோத்தமனின் நேர்த்தியான ஒளிப்பதிவு, காட்சிகளை நின்று கவனிக்க வைக்கின்றன.

காமெடி என்ற பெயரில் வரும் சில ஆபாச வசனங்கள் மற்றும் ‘கிளிஷே’ காட்சிகளைத் தவிர்த்திருந்தாலும் ரசிக்கும் படமாகவே இருந்திருக்கும். மேக்கிங்கில் இன்னும் கவனம் செலுத்தி இருக்கலாம். ஆனாலும் 2கே கிட்ஸ், தியேட்டரில் காண்பிக்கும் திருவிழா ‘மூடில்’ குறைகள் கரைந்து போகின்றன.

Love Today Review: Fun-filled Youthful Entertainer

"Love Today," a Tamil film, was a smash hit in Tamilnadu. Producer Dil Raju has released the film in Telugu after being impressed by its success.

Let us examine its advantages and disadvantages. 

Story: Pradeep (Pradeep Ranganathan) and Nikitha (Ivana), both IT employees, are deeply in love. Pradeep's sister Divya (Raveena) recently got engaged to a dentist (Yogi Babu), and wedding plans are in the works. Pradeep agrees to meet with Nikitha's father to ask for her hand after his sister's wedding is over.

However, Nikitha's father Venu Sastry (Sathyaraj) detects their love and invites Pradeep to their home. Sastry agrees to their marriage if they agree to his condition of exchanging mobile phones for one day. They agree to it half-heartedly and exchange their phones.

Will they check each other's phones? What difficulties would they face as a result of this unusual condition?

Artistes’ Performances: Pradeep Ranganathan not only wrote and directed the film, but also starred as the protagonist. He resembles the boy next door. His performance is relatable. His conversations, frustrations, and emotional outbursts are completely natural.

Ivana, the female lead, is attractive and has good acting skills. She does a good job in her role. Yogi Babu, who also plays an important role, adds dignity to the proceedings. He demonstrates the maturity required for the role.

Raveena as his wife-to-be is excellent. Radhika Sarath Kumar and Sathya Raj are fantastic.

Technical Excellence: The cinematography, editing, and music of the film reflect its trendy setting. Editing is crazy and creative.

Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is an additional asset, particularly his background score, which has elevated the proceedings. The Telugu dialogues are excellent.

Drawback: Certain portions in second half Predictable ending

Analysis "Love Today," as the title suggests, is about two modern-day lovers. The two lovers use their phones for everything from chatting to making Insta Reels. Mobile phones are more like a personal diary where all their secrets are kept for them. Naturally, the problems begin when they are forced to exchange their phones for a day. Tamil director Pradeep Ranganathan had a brilliant idea involving mobile phones and social media apps.

You might be wondering what problems this phone exchange would cause. It does. The heroine goes on a night ride with her ex without informing her current lover. The hero messages women on Instagram and speaks nicely to telemarketing women. These are just a few of the many secrets revealed by their phones.

The film is full of hilarious scenes that anyone can relate to today. First, the director reveals that the heroine is still in contact with her ex-boyfriend, and one of her friends proposed to her via mobile chatting. The director then sheds light on the hero's dirty secrets in the second half. Both of these threads come together at one point. There are numerous plot twists and turns that both entertain and engage us.

The plot of the film is similar to that of most romantic dramas, but with a unique twist.

The use of memes, viral songs, and jokes is brilliant. One of the dialogues also includes a reference to the recent "Jaru Mithaya" song. 

Another thread involves Yogi Babu and Raveena, which adds another dimension to the story.

On the downside, the second half of the film is not as amusing as the first. Revi's character and his thread are not adequately explained. Other issues arise in the second half as well. 

All of this, however, has no effect on the film's flow and it never stops providing entertainment.

On the whole, “Love Today” depicts the lifestyle of today’s youth and their dating culture through a lot of fun-filled moments. The film makes a time pass watch and provides paisa vasool entertainment.

Love Today Movie Review (2022)

Pradeep ranganathan's 'love today' has a great theme that is let down by the writing, which settles for easy jokes and easy sentimentality.

On the surface, Pradeep Ranganathan's Love Today is about the apparent shallowness of… love today. When people in earlier generations fell in love, there was the automatic assumption that the couple either fell for each other and then got to know all about each other, or they got to know about each other and then fell in love. I am not saying that the love in those generations was "pure". There was porn. When guys got together, there were extensive discussions about the anatomy of actresses. When girls got together, there was talk about the hotness-quotient of guys. And yet, as far as the couple in love was concerned, they stayed true to one another, and the relationship was based on trust.

I don't want to get all sociological on you, but maybe one of the reasons for that true-ness and trust was the fact that there wasn't as much pressure on people who were single. Even if you didn't land a boyfriend or girlfriend, you knew you'd end up with an arranged marriage – and there was no harm in that. But today, almost twenty years after Shankar's Boys had the hero sing " Enakkoru girlfriend venumada… girlfriend illa vaazhkai waste allava… ", I think there is a lot of pressure among youngsters to be partnered. And that's the point we see Uthaman and Nikitha at, played by the director and Ivana. They do some sweet-talking by the beach. They get matching jewellery and matching love songs as ring tones. But they hardly seem to know anything about each other. Even the topic of exes – which is usually something people in love always talk about – seems to have been unexplored.

Now, add to this "shallow love" concept the presence of the smartphone - and you get a theme that is pure genius. It's no accident that the first time we see Uthaman, it's through his reflection on the screen of a new phone. Because that is the "mirror" through which everyone sees and evaluates themselves today. But unlike a mirror, there's more beneath the surface of a smartphone. It is possibly the most accurate record of who you really are. So when Sathyaraj, the girl's father, asks Uthaman and Nikitha to exchange their phones – that's his condition for their marriage – he is really asking them to know each other beyond the surface.

But like in Comali , Pradeep Ranganathan is better at coming up with concepts than in fleshing them out. I am not asking for a deep examination of love today, but almost every point is steered towards a joke or a cuss word or a bit of sensationalism or a urinating kid. Take Thiruchitrambalam . The premise was dark: a boy has a dysfunctional relationship with his father, he screws up his own career to spite his father, and so on. But there was also a balance of humour. The film juggled both layers beautifully. The writing in Love Today is all over the place (and also way too long). The scenes are more like set-ups for punchlines. And that's not wrong – but if you just want easy Tom-and-Jerry style gender jokes, then why pick this theme?

For a film made for today's "youth", there is a lot of surprisingly conservative material. The hero brings up the topic of virginity. The heroine seems shocked when she realises guys watch porn. A giant metaphor about a mango seed seems right of the 1960s. And the gigantically emotional climax seems to belong in another movie altogether. Another aspect that bothered me was that the hero and heroine seem so shady in some ways. He says he is making a short film and asks women to send him pictures. She has other men she calls "baby" and "darling", which is not wrong but just seems weird in the context of this movie and her character. The hero is part of a fake Instagram account used by many others to harass women. Where does one draw the line between being young and foolish, and having some kind of inner moral code?

There's a very touching scene where Uthaman's mother, played by Radhika Sarathkumar, asks him why he's chatting with other girls even after he's with Nikitha. He says the reason is that if she leaves him or cheats on him, at least he won't feel like a loser – because he has been "cheating" too. I was both shocked and saddened by this revelation. Is this what love today is like? Is this the immense pressure today's youngsters find themselves under? Is this how they reassure themselves about their self-worth? Man, it must be insane to live like that – saying that you are in love and yet sensing that you may be dumped, and therefore pursuing other openings on the side!

Pradeep Ranganathan wants to say a lot – he wants to say so much that the script spills over with flab. In a scene with a beggar, he wants to show that smartphones contribute to hypocrisy in society. In the scenes with Yogi Babu, he wants to milk easy tears from the audience by showing how smartphones can damage your self-esteem, first through an overheard conference call and later through a friends' Whatsapp group. There are  a few laughs, sure, but the real hero of the film is Yuvan Shankar Raja, whose wonderfully featherlight score makes the jokes seem better, and makes the serious scenes seem more weighty. This is also a much better production than Comali , and it has been directed better, too. But the writing is where everything stops. The film's real conflict is not the one between Boy and Girl, but the one between the theme and the way it's been fleshed out as a screenplay.

Love Today review: An enjoyable feature-length meme with a moral science lesson

Love today review: an enjoyable comedy-drama that fails in its attempt to be an emotional love story..

Would you exchange your mobile phone with your significant other for a day? The lead couple of director Pradeep Ranganathan’s sophomore film – Uttaman Pradeep (Pradeep Ranganathan) and Nikitha (Ivana) – are forced to do so by the latter’s dad, which comes across as a sly ploy to pry them apart. And it works. The couple, who keep telling each other corny lines like “Enaku unna pathi ellam theriyum, baby (I know everything about you, baby)”, realise the truth in that one day. Like how Nikitha is still in touch with her ex-boyfriend, who she still fondly calls “Mamakutttyyyy” or how Uttaman Pradeep keeps sliding into the DMs of women under the pretext of approaching them for his short film. As they dig deep into each other’s phones, trust issues creep up and put a question mark on their relationship.

Like his debut film Comali, Love Today also centres around a quirky idea that makes director’s job easy. It also makes the film feel like a string of scenes rather than a seamless story; even the screenplay is segmented. The first half deals with revelations of Ivana’s secrets and then we move on to Pradeep’s. The humour works big time because it is in perfect sync with our pop culture. Maybe, that’s why it feels like you are watching a YouTube channel that’s hilarious, but still YouTube. The characters also serve a single purpose. Take Ravi, sorry Revi, for instance, the purpose of the character is to diss ‘boy besties’, and if you have to ask what a boy bestie is, you are too old for the movie.

“Fun…fun…” a catchphrase of sorts in the film also happens to be an apt description of the film, where every problem is dealt with in a rather juvenile fashion and receive shallow solutions. The film conveniently deals only with softcore issues that are palatable for the mainstream audience. Pradeep doesn’t actually cheat, he just flirts. Nikitha was just helping her distressed ex-boyfriend by going on a car ride with him. Things get whitewashed as we see only the deleted chats and hidden conversations. But what about their search history, their kinks, and our truths that only our mobile phones know? Maybe, those are too dark for this film, which wants to end on a rosy note.

The film may want to be modern at its heart, but there’s a Boomer-ish vibe that seems to be at the core of it. A case in point is the characterizations of Revi and Mammakutty. Though the film pretends to be accepting of the idea of the heroine having other guys as friends, the gaze it has towards such relationships is outdated. It doesn’t see its hero or heroine with the same lens. At the end of the day, he is another ‘Momma’s boy’ and she is ‘Daddy’s little princess’. I wish the film had just been a long string of comedy sequences, instead of becoming another moral science lesson, just like Comali.

Love Today is a film written and directed by Pradeep Ranganathan and produced by Kalpathi S Aghoram, Kalpathi S Ganesh and Kalpathi S Suresh under the banner AGS Entertainment. The film has Pradeep Ranganathan and Ivana in the lead roles while Sathyaraj, Radhika Sarathkumar, Yogi Babu, Aajeedh, Bhaarath and others play supporting roles. It has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja and cinematography by Dinesh Purushothaman.

Uthaman Pradeep (Pradeep Ranganathan) is a happy engineering graduate and is in a relationship with Nikitha (Ivana). One day, Ivana's father (Sathyaraj) finds out about their love and asks Uthaman to meet him. During the meeting, he asks the couple to exchange their phones. The rest of the film deals with what they get to know about each other through the phones and how it affects their relationship.

The trailer itself revealed the crux of the film, so whether the film works or not depends solely on how Pradeep chooses to present this story. Right from the word go, the film is filled with a lot of jokes. And this is what makes an already known story completely engaging.

Although Pradeep's acting is thoroughly enjoyable, it does remind us of Dhanush in terms of the body language. The star of the show is however Ivana, who aces her role as Nikitha. In the emotional scenes, she scores well and lifts those scenes several notches above. Among the other actors, Sathyaraj and Radhika Sarathkumar stamp their authority and prove their acting skills one more time, and Yogi Babu also chips in with a lot of punches.

Another big advantage for Love Today is the fact that it doesn't depend solely on the counters for laughter. The situations are also funny in a lot of scenes and Pradeep chooses to milk the potential in each scene to evoke laughter. There are a few scenes where the jokes don't land, but mostly they're extreme fun.

The spine of the film is Yuvan Shankar Raja's background score. When Yuvan's music was used as a promotion tool for the film, a few were skeptical, but the film tells us why the man is worth every bit of the hype. The choice of using Pyaar Prema Kaadhal 's BGM in one of the scenes also worked really well.

The cinematography and editing also go hand in hand to give us a fantastic visual experience. DOP Dinesh Purushothaman has played with the colours and framing as much as possible, while the edits to a lot of reaction shots aid in creating humour out of ordinary scenes.

Overall the film is technically fantastic and the actors' performances are also highly convincing. Despite a predictable plot, Love Today majorly engages and entertains because of the treatment. It is like your most favourite dish that you always order from a restaurant. You know how it is going to taste, but that is exactly why you order it. Love Today is one such fun film.

Pradeep Ranganathan made an impressive debut with the 2019 comedy-drama Comali, starring Jayam Ravi and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles. He chose a unique plotline once again and came up with his second outing, Love Today. Apart from directing, he also played the lead hero in it. The film features Ivana as the female lead. Radhika Sarathkumar and Satyaraj played pivotal roles in it. Let’s see how it turned out to be.

Love Today explores the love story of two millennial kids, Uthaman (Pradeep) and Nikita (Ivana). Just like the most present-day couple, this pair fall in love and decide to get married without really ‘knowing’ each other. That’s when Nikita’s father (Satyaraj) comes up with a condition for their marriage. He asks Uthaman and Nikita to exchange their phone for a day. He says that he will agree to this marriage only if they manage to love each other after exchanging their phones. What happens when the couple exchanges their mobile phones forms the main crux of the film.

This is a unique idea that will appeal to the youngsters of this generation. Pradeep not only gets his idea right but also explores the entire screenplay by targeting the millennials. Even the film’s making style reminds you of TikTok videos and Instagram reels. The youngsters can relate to every scene, whether it is the sequence where the heroine goes on a night ride with her ex without her lover’s (hero) knowledge or the hero messaging other women on Instagram.

Pradeep Ranganathan is not only good as a writer and a director but he also scores brownie points with his acting too. His guy-next-door looks work for him big time. Ivana also impresses as the female lead. The lead pair’s chemistry is one of the major highlights of this romantic comedy. Satyaraj gives a settled performance. Radhika is good too and most of the time, she has been used to preach morals and values. Yogi Babu impresses with a heart-warming character. Raveena also shines as Yogi Babu’s wife.

Love Today’s writing follows the ‘template’ of every romantic drama. But Pradeep brings freshness through his screenplay and the usage of music and editing. Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja works big time. It is one of the major assets of this film. The production values are great. The technical brilliance of the film can be seen in many scenes, be it the title cards or funky transitions.

If a director knows the sensibilities of his target audience, he can come up with a winner of a subject. Pradeep has done exactly that. Love Today will be relatable to all youngsters out there and it will engage them right from the beginning to the end. Towards the end, the film falls into the typical ‘message-conveying’ zone but that doesn’t take away the fun at all.

On the whole, Love Today showcases how a hormone-charged couple turns into an emotional couple. It is the ultimate fun ride, especially for the youth. You can watch it without any inhibitions.

Love Today Telugu release by Varisu producers!

Tamil film Love Today written, directed and starring Pradeep Ranganathan has been doing extremely well at the box-office despite being a mid size film with no big names attached to it. The movie first released on November 4, 2022 and now it has been officially announced that the film's dubbed version will be presented in Telugu by Dil Raju of Sri Venkateswara Creations.
