Former President Donald Trump told his followers on Truth Social on Wednesday that he would be posting throughout Kamala Harris' DNC speech, when she formally accepted the party's nomination for president.

Here are some of the issues Trump commented on while Harris spoke, with some quick fact-checking.

On abortion: "Everybody, Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, and Conservatives, wanted Roe v. Wade TERMINATED , and brought back to the States."

False:  According to a Gallup poll from June 2023 , one year after Roe v. Wade was overturned, 61% of respondents said overturning Roe  was a "bad thing," while 38% said it was a "good thing."

Additionally, an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll  from earlier this year showed that most Americans believe criminalizing abortion is wrong.

Former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, speaks during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Aug. 8.

162 lies and distortions in a news conference. NPR fact-checks former President Trump

On immigration:  "She just called to give all Illegals CITIZENSHIP , SAY GOODBYE TO THE U.S.A.! SHE IS A RADICAL MARXIST!"

False:  During her acceptance speech tonight, Harris said she would support a bipartisan border bill on immigration. There is nothing in the text of the bill that would give all undocumented immigrants automatic American citizenship.

Additionally, while Harris mentioned that pathways to citizenship should exist, this does not equate to automatic citizenship for those in the country illegally.

On his legal troubles:  " These Prosecutions were all started by her and Biden against their Political Opponent, ME!"

False: The White House has nothing to do with the cases brought against former President Trump, whose four current criminal cases were brought against him by the New York state court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the Georgia state court and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, respectively.

Yankees boost lineup with star utilityman’s return from injury.

The New York Yankees are set to activate Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the injured list on Friday ahead of their series opener against the Colorado Rockies. There was an initial fear that Chisolm, who was diagnosed with a left UCL sprain earlier this month, could potentially require season-ending surgery. But all along, the 26-year-old super utilityman was confident he could avoid surgery and return after the 10-day minimum.

Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees reinstated INF/OF Jazz Chisholm Jr. (#13) from the 10-day injured list. — New York Yankees (@Yankees) August 23, 2024

“We’re definitely going to avoid surgery,” Chisholm told the New York Post’s Greg Joyce. “It’s 100 percent realistic in my mind that at the end of the 10 days, I’ll be back.”

Yankees Reinstate Jazz Chisholm from 10-Day IL

Chisholm has given the Yankees’ offense a major spark since coming over from the Marlins ahead of the trade deadline. In 14 games in pinstripes, Chisholm slashed .316/.361/.702 with a 1.063 OPS, seven homers and 11 RBI. He also stepped up as the Yankees’ new third baseman, a position he has no experience playing in the majors. After a few days of rest and rehab, Chisholm started playing catch during the Yankees three-game series in Detroit. He was fielding grounders over the weekend before getting back outside for batting practice on Wednesday.

Chisholm’s swift recovery is a great sign for the Yankees amid a tight race with the Orioles for the division. Barring a last-minute change of plans, Chisholm will slot back in at third base for Friday’s series opener against Colorado. Oswald Peraza , who New York optioned back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, and Oswaldo Cabrera have held down the hot corner in Chisholm’s absence.

Chisholm is just the first of the reinforcements expected to return to a depleted Yankee infield soon. Both Anthony Rizzo and Jon Berti are scheduled to begin rehab assignments at some point this weekend. New York will need the extra offensive firepower as they set their sights on a deep run in October.

Fact-Checking Harris’s Speech and More: Day 4 of the D.N.C.

We followed the developments and fact-checked the speakers, providing context and explanation.

  • Share full article

Vice President Kamala Harris speaking at a lectern with a crowd behind her.

Vice President Kamala Harris accepted her party’s nomination for president on the last night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Thursday.

Ms. Harris outlined her biography and warned that her opponent, former President Donald J. Trump, was an “unserious man” who was seeking to return to power and bring the United States back to the past. Like the speakers who preceded her on Thursday night and earlier this week, Ms. Harris focused largely on aspirations and ideals and generally did not stray far from the facts.

Here’s an assessment of a few claims made by Ms. Harris and other speakers.

Linda Qiu

“Donald Trump was asked what he would do about Social Security and Medicare, and he said, and I quote, ‘There is a lot you can do in terms of cutting.’”

— Senator Tammy Baldwin, Democrat of Wisconsin

This needs context.

Ms. Baldwin referred accurately to comments Mr. Trump made in a March interview with CNBC , in which he said, “There is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting and in terms of also the theft and the bad management of entitlements.” But Mr. Trump and his campaign clarified that he would not seek to cut the programs, and that he was speaking about “waste.” In rallies and other interviews during this campaign season, he has said that if he is elected president again he will not make cuts to either program.

A few days after the CNBC interview, he told the right-wing website Breitbart that he would “never do anything that will jeopardize or hurt Social Security or Medicare.” In a campaign event on Thursday , he vowed to “not touch Social Security.”

Still, Mr. Trump has not outlined a clear plan for keeping the programs solvent. And during his time in office, Mr. Trump did propose some cuts to Medicare — though experts said the cost reductions would not have significantly affected benefits — and to Social Security’s programs for people with disabilities.

“A serial liar, cheater, thief who looked soldiers in the eye, then turned around and called fallen heroes suckers and losers.”

— Representative Pat Ryan, Democrat of New York

The claim that Donald J. Trump, as president, called veterans “suckers” and “losers” stems from a 2020 article in The Atlantic about his relationship to the military.

Mr. Trump has emphatically denied making the remarks since the article was published. While it relied on anonymous sources, many of the accounts it contained have been corroborated by other outlets, including The New York Times, and by John F. Kelly, a retired four-star Marine general who served as Mr. Trump’s White House chief of staff. Here’s a breakdown .

“He invited Russia to do — and these are his words, not mine — ‘whatever the hell they want.’”

— Senator Mark Kelly, Democrat of Arizona

Mr. Kelly omitted a caveat in quoting Donald J. Trump, who, as president, said he told a NATO member nation that Russia could do “whatever the hell they want” to any country that did not meet the alliance’s military spending targets. But the remark was not a blanket invitation for Russia to act with abandon.

Mr. Trump, at a campaign rally in February , repeated his misleading claim that some members of NATO “owed” money to the alliance, referring to informal commitments made by member nations to spend 2 percent of their gross domestic products on their own militaries. In Mr. Trump’s telling, after he had delivered a speech urging members to “pay out,” the president of “one of the big countries” asked if the United States would come to its defense if President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia invaded, but it had failed to meet that 2 percent target. “I said, ‘You didn’t pay. You’re delinquent?’ He said, ‘Yes, let’s say that happened.’ ‘No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want,’” Mr. Trump said.

When criticized for his remarks, Mr. Trump repeated his stance later that month at another rally: “Look, if they’re not going to pay, we’re not going to protect.”

More than 20 member nations currently meet the 2 percent target, the secretary general of the alliance recently announced.

Kamala Harris “has achieved the lowest veteran unemployment rate in history.”

— Representative Ruben Gallego, Democrat of Arizona

The unemployment rate for veterans reached 2.2 percent in April 2023, under the Biden-Harris administration. That is indeed the lowest rate recorded since 2003, the earliest year for which the Bureau of Labor Statistics has available data. The rate has since increased; it was 3 percent in July.

Andrew Duehren

Andrew Duehren

“He doesn’t actually fight for the middle class. Instead, he fights for himself and his billionaire friends. And he will give them another round of tax breaks that will add up to $5 trillion to the national debt.”

— Vice President Kamala Harris

This is misleading.

Former President Donald J. Trump has called for a number of tax cuts during his presidential campaign, including extending the cuts in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that will expire next year. Continuing those tax cuts beyond 2025 would cost about $4.6 trillion in lower tax revenue and greater interest costs over 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office .

But those tax cuts — including a larger standard deduction — benefit middle-income Americans, not just billionaires. Mr. Trump has also called for other costly tax cuts on the campaign trail, including cutting the corporate tax rate to 15 percent, exempting tips from taxes and not taxing Social Security benefits. Those tax cuts would not exclusively benefit billionaires and would not cost $5 trillion.

“He intends to enact what is, in effect, a national sales tax — call it a Trump tax — that would raise prices on middle-class families by almost $4,000 a year.”

Ms. Harris was referring to Mr. Trump’s proposals to place a 10 to 20 percent tariff on most imports, and a 60 percent tariff on Chinese goods. She accurately cited one estimate of the cost. Other estimates are lower, while some are higher.

An analysis by the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a liberal think tank, found that tariffs at those levels would cost the average family $3,900 annually.

The Peterson Institute for International Economics estimated that the proposals would cost the average middle-class household $2,600 annually under a 20 percent tariff and $1,700 annually under a 10 percent tariff. The Tax Policy Center estimated $320 more annually for the lowest-income households and $1,350 more for middle class households under a 10 percent tariff. And the right-leaning American Action Forum put the cost of the broad tariff at $1,700 to $2,350 annually, and the China-specific one at $1,950.

Mr. Trump has also suggested that he would replace income taxes with tariffs to minimize their impact, though tax policy experts say this is impossible as tariff levels would have to be implausibly high to replace the revenue from income taxes.

Twins’ Byron Buxton tests right hip in hopes of returning to roster this week

Byron Buxton came out of the Twins’ game Aug. 12 with a sore hip that resulted from, doctors believe, scar tissue that built up after a similar injury in 2022. He is eligible to be activated Friday.

By Phil Miller

SAN DIEGO – Green Day and Journey are gone, so Byron Buxton was back in the outfield Tuesday at Target Field, testing his right hip in hopes of returning to the Twins ’ roster when they return home to face the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

“Today was the first day we had a chance to get him on the ground” because of the huge stages that occupied the ballpark for concerts while the Twins were in San Diego and in Texas, said Nick Paparesta , the Twins’ head athletic trainer. “He’s been hitting in the cage, throwing, doing outfield work. Things are going well, progressing along nicely.”

Buxton, who came out of the Twins’ game Aug. 12 with a sore hip that resulted from, doctors believe, scar tissue that built up after a similar injury in 2022, is eligible to be activated Friday.

“I would never rule that out,” Paparesta said. “The off day on Thursday gives us a chance to reconvene. I get a chance to talk to him and see face-to-face how things are going. I wouldn’t rule that out.”

Progress is coming more slowly for Carlos Correa , who on Friday will mark six weeks since a case of plantar fasciitis in his right foot knocked him out of action.

Correa also ran Tuesday at Target Field, Paparesta said, and said his foot felt better than it did Sunday.

“We’re just kind of in a pain-management situation with Carlos, trying to make sure that we can keep him comfortable, see how each day goes,” Paparesta said. “He’s still having some discomfort. As cliché as it sounds, it’s truly day-to-day on how he’s going to feel and what we can do with him.”

Still, the trainer said, Correa has been hitting and fielding to stay as sharp as possible without putting too much pressure on his sore right foot.

Meanwhile, outfielder/first baseman Alex Kirilloff ’s sore lower back had improved enough that the Twins planned to send him on a rehabilitation assignment this week. But Kirilloff suffered a sprained ankle last week while doing a change-of-direction drill, delaying that assignment.

“He’s done well coming back from that, so we’re hoping to get him out [on a rehab] this weekend,” Paparesta said. “He’s been able to swing. He’s going to get on the bases in the next couple of days, and if that goes well, he’ll be ready to move along.”

Brooks Lee is throwing pain-free, Paparesta said, and now can hit from both sides of the plate as his strained right shoulder has healed. Lee will work out with the Class AAA St. Paul Saints on Thursday, and the Twins will figure out his timeline after that.

Martin clever on the bases

When Willi Castro hit a sharp ground ball toward second baseman Xander Bogaerts during the second inning Monday night, the Twins’ scoring chances appeared gone. The bases were loaded with one out, but Castro’s grounder gave the San Diego Padres an opportunity to turn a double play.

Austin Martin prevented it.

The rookie outfielder broke toward second when the ball was hit and neared Bogaerts as he fielded the ball. The Padres infielder, seeing Martin nearby, decided to speed up the play by tagging Martin out and flipping the ball to first base.

But Martin anticipated the play and stopped in the base path, then backpedaled toward first. Now committed, Bogaerts chased Martin and tagged him — too late to get Castro at first base. Christian Vázquez scored on the play, a run that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

“Exceptional baserunning,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “These are the things that you talk about many times in spring training — you sit down and discuss these scenarios. Baserunning, it’s more of a mental exercise than a physical one. You have to know that something might happen and play it out in your head, then recognize it quickly.”

Not bad for a rookie, Baldelli said.

“You can’t do it better than that. That’s the difference between winning a game sometimes and losing,” he said. “It was actually the way you would draw it up.”

Baldelli was less impressed with Martin when told that the rookie is “naturally ambidextrous,” able to write, throw and perform many other function with both hands.

“He’s an ambidextrous player who decided not to bat lefthanded? What?” Baldelli said in mock horror. “You can quote me on that.”

Saints lose to RailRiders

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with the help of a home run and fielding error, and the RailRiders never trailed in defeating the St. Paul Saints 9-4 Tuesday night at CHS Field. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. hit a three-run homer for the Saints.

With three outs to go and down one run, Florida would scratch out a run and force extras thanks to a bloop single from DeMarcos Mieses.

After a scoreless 7th inning, Chinese Taipei was unable to get the automatic runner home from second in the top of the 8th, setting the table for Florida to capture the title.

On the first pitch of the bottom of the 8th, Hunter Alexander dropped down a bunt to the right side.

Pitcher Chiu Wei-Che fielded the ball cleanly, but his throw to first sailed into right field after no one was at the bag, letting the runner from second score and giving Florida the win.

Texas vs. Venezuela in Little League World Series final score: Southwest falls to Latin America in 3rd-place game

assignment synonym beat

A promising Little League Baseball World Series ended with Texas finishing in fourth place, with Boerne falling to Venezuela 4-3 in the third-place game Sunday.

After losing to Florida Saturday, Texas found itself against one of the deepest teams in the tournament. Despite a hot start that saw Texas jump out to a 3-0 lead, Venezuela kept traffic on the base-paths all morning, ultimately plating four. The first of those runs came off the bat of Diego Biarreta, who doubled to left center to push across Venezuela's first run of the game.

Caden Guffey went 3 2/3 for Texas, and he successfully battled his way out of multiple jams. However, despite several threats from the Texas bats, Boerne wasn't able to score the all-important fourth run of the game.

5th inning: Venezuela 4, Texas 3

10:46 a.m.: It worked! Texas turns a double play to get out of the inning unscathed, and both teams continue to grind this game out.

10:44 a.m.: With runners at the corners and no one out, Justin Newsome makes a mound visit.

10:37 a.m.: Venezuela once again gets out of the inning, and will get a chance to hit.

10:36 a.m.: Texas is threatening here in the top of the fifth. Runners at second and third with two outs as it tries to push the tying run in.

4th inning: Venezuela 4, Texas 4th inning: Venezuela 4, Texas 3

10:25 a.m.: Replay overturns the call, and the score remains 4-3.

10:23 a.m.: A ground ball hits off the bag for Venezuela and a run apparently scores, but review may well overturn this.

10:19 a.m.: A walk is going to end Guffey's day at 80-plus pitches. He worked in and out of a lot of traffic but ultimately goes 3 2/3.

10:15 a.m.: Venezuela has a runner on first with one out after a ground ball up the middle. There has been a baserunner every inning.

10:08 a.m.: That's now 11 straight Texas batters retired, as a great play at second gets Venezuela out of the inning. Huge turnaround after a tough first inning.

3rd inning: Venezuela 4, Texas 3

10:02 a.m.: Venezuela scores another run, but Guffey gets the next batter swinging. It's been a grind, but the game is still in reach. Texas bats have to wake up.

9:58 a.m.: The bases load up with one out after a Bermuda Triangle base hit and a hit batter. Guffey has to work himself out of another jam.

9:55 a.m.: For the third inning in a row, Venezuela got a runner in scoring position with no one out. A sacrifice bunt gets thrown away, and the game is now tied with a runner on second and no one out. Texas' defensive struggles continue.

9:49 a.m.: Texas again goes down 1-2-3. Bats have cooled off after a strong first inning.

2nd inning: Texas 3, Venezuela 2

9:44 a.m.: A ground ball over to first gets Texas out of the inning with a one-run lead, but Venezuela is on the board.

9:43 a.m.: A fielder's choice on a weak ground ball scores one for Venezuela, and there are once again runners at the corners. This time with two out.

9:41 a.m.: Venezuela now has the bases loaded with one out, and they're cooking with gas. Guffey throws a pitch away but the short backstop saves him from a run.

9:38 a.m.: A Venezuela double now drives in a run, and Venezuela is now on the board. Great piece of hitting there going the other way as a left-handed bat.

9:36 a.m.: An error at third has the leadoff runner on for Venezuela, and a passed ball advances him to second with nobody out. And a wild pitch then moves him to third.

9:34 a.m.: A much quieter frame here, as Venezuela holds Texas scoreless in the top half of the second.

1st inning: Texas 3, Venezuela 0

9:26 a.m.: Guffey gets out of the inning with a ground ball up the middle in a 6-3 double play. Texas keeps its 3-0 lead after one.

9:26 a.m.: Guffey gets a sword on a fastball high and tight for a big early strikeout. That brings up the pitcher Mora with runners on first and third and an out.

9:24 a.m.: A great piece of hitting puts runners at the corners. A breaking ball deep in the zone gets taken the other way and Venezuela is threatening itself early here.

9:23 a.m.: The Venezuela bats have also awoken early. Yepez takes Guffey the other way for a leadoff hit and there's a runner on with nobody out.

9:22 a.m.: Caden Guffey is on the mound for Texas.

9:18 a.m.: Venezuela gets out of the inning and will get a chance to hit in the bottom hit of the frame.

9:14 a.m.: A passed ball scores a third run for Texas, which has come out extremely aggressive here early.

9:13 a.m.: A ground ball back to the mound gets airmailed to third going for the lead runner, and two runs score while the batter ends up at third.

9:12 a.m.: Gray scorched one the other way for Texas but it was knocked down at first for a force out. The next batter singles on a pulled line drive, and the Texas bats have started out hot.

9:10 a.m.: Willian's Mora is in the mound for Venezuela, and Julian Hurst leads things off with a first-pitch single the other way. Looked like it got lost in the sun.

9:08 a.m.: Venezuela has taken the field, and we're very nearly underway.

9:03 a.m.: Players are lined up along the baseline as they get ready to play their final game of the tournament.

8:43 a.m.: Both teams take a quiet moment ahead of the LLWS third-place game.
