Become a qualified heavy goods vehicle (HGV) or bus driver

Driver cpc part 2 test: case studies.

You can book the part 2 case studies test of the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence ( CPC ) as soon as you’ve got your provisional licence. You do not need to have passed the Driver CPC part 1 theory test.

If you’re requalifying as a heavy goods vehicle ( HGV ) or bus driver by taking parts 2 and 4 of the test, you cannot book your test online. You have to book by phone instead.

Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency customer services Telephone: 0300 200 1122 (choose option 01) Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm Find out about call charges

What to take to your test

You must bring one of the following:

  • a Great Britain photocard driving licence
  • a Northern Ireland photocard driving licence and paper counterpart
  • an EU photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart, if you have one)

If you do not have a photocard driving licence, bring your paper licence and a valid passport.

Your test will be cancelled and you’ll lose your fee if you do not bring the right documents.

Revision and practice

You can use books or software to revise for the test and take practice tests.

You can buy:

  • Driver CPC : the Official DVSA Guide for Professional Goods Vehicle Drivers online if you’re learning to drive a lorry
  • Driver CPC : the Official DVSA Guide for Bus and Coach Drivers online if you’re learning to drive a bus or coach

How the test works

The test is made up of 7 case studies you work through on a computer. The case studies are short stories based on situations that you’re likely to come across in your working life.

You’ll be asked between 6 and 8 multiple-choice questions on each case study.

The test lasts for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the pass mark is 40 out of 50.

Your test result

You’ll get a letter with the results at the test centre.

You need the test pass reference number when you book your Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test.

The pass letter is valid for 2 years.

You need to pass the Driver CPC part 4 practical demonstration test within 2 years, otherwise you’ll have to pass the part 2 case studies test again.

If you fail the test

You’ll get a result letter with feedback telling you why you’ve failed.

You can book another case studies test straight away, but you cannot take it for another 3 clear working days.

Cancelled tests

You can apply for a refund of out-of-pocket expenses if DVSA cancels your test at short notice.

Initial Driver CPC Training

All professional LGV and PCV (lorry and bus) drivers legally must hold a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence certificate / Driver CPC qualification before they drive for living. Bains Training Services is one stop leading Driver CPC training provider in London to train you for Driver CPC qualifacations.

There are four modules in the Driver CPC: two are the same as the tests you’ll take for getting your LGV, PCV licence.

  • Theory test is the same test as for your LGV licence
  • Driver CPC case study test
  • Driving ability test: this is the same as the practical test for your LGV licence
  • Driver CPC demonstration test / Driver CPC Module 4

You can find more information about Driver CPC on GOV.UK or you can watch this DVSA video for an overview of the Driver CPC. You can also access the HGV and PCV industry guide to driver CPC.

As soon as you’ve passed all four modules, you’ll get a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) which you must carry with you while you’re driving a LGV / Truck or PCV / Bus.

Module 2 Driver CPC Case study

Candidates must pass the case study test before they take the practical D emonstration test. Like the theory test, it is a computer based test. There are different case studies for LGV drivers and PCV drivers. Case studies are short scenarios that you may face in your daily practice. We deliver Module 2 Driver CPC training in our office or you can buy study material from us and parctice at home on your computer. For module 2 training we sell DVDs and books to read and practice.

The case study test lasts 75 minutes and covers 7 case studies, 6 - 8 multiple choice questions from each case study with a possible maximum score of 50. Candidates need to score at least 40 out of 50 to pass the test. Before you start the test, you can have a practice session of up to 15 minutes.

Please watch the Driver CPC Module 2 case study video for an overview of test.

Module 4 Driver CPC Demonstration Test

Driver CPC Module 4 training is all about the safety and security of the vehicle. It is the second part of Driver CPC. Once you have passed your Module 2 (Case study test) you will need to go ahead with the Module 4 (Demonstration test). It lasts for 30 minutes with a pass mark of 80% with 15 out of 20 in each subject. Once you have passed, you will receive your Driver Qualification Card (DQC). The card will be valid for 5 years and you will then have to complete 35 hours Driver CPC Periodic training (Classroom training).

Driver CPC Module 4 training has two different versions. One for truck drivers called Driver CPC Module 4 Training for LGV . Driver CPC Module 4 Training for bus drivers called as Driver CPC Module 4 training for PCV . Module 4 needs to be completed by both LGV and PCV drivers. LGV drivers will need to demonstrate the use of the DVSA Load Securing Demonstration Trolley. Please watch the video that meets your needs.

Candidates will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge and ability in the following subject areas:

  • Ability to load the vehicle with due regard for safety rules and proper vehicle use
  • Security of the vehicle and contents
  • Ability to prevent criminality and trafficking in illegal immigrants
  • Ability to assess emergency situations
  • Ability to prevent physical risk

Initial CPC Driving Licence

Who Needs Initial CPC?

Initial CPC is for lorry drivers that didn’t hold a lorry entitlement (7.5t or above) on 9th September 2009.

This means the lorry driver must have either passed a UK car driving test before 1st January 1997 or have passed a Cat C1, C, or CE test before 10th September 2009.

Initial CPC is only undertaken once for lorries and once for buses if required. All subsequent training will be Periodic Driver CPC.

Module 2 is a computer-based assessment taken at a DSA theory test centre. Module 2 contains 7 case studies based on situations that drivers are likely to encounter. The test examines your ability to apply knowledge to work-based driving situations. Questions are in ‘short’ formats such as multiple-choice, clicking on an area of a photograph, or by typing in a short answer.

Module 4 is a practical test where the driver demonstrates their ability to keep a vehicle roadworthy, safe, and secure whilst ensuring personal safety.

The driver will be asked to demonstrate a knowledge of performing daily maintenance vehicle checks by conducting a physical walk round vehicle safety check. To pass, the candidate has to score 15 out of a possible 20 points in each topic area (75%) and an overall score of 80%.

If you require Periodic CPC, click here for more information.

GET STARTED!

Frequently asked questions.

No, you can’t.

The process is the same as it is for a driving test. Theory tests first, then practical test.

Yes, you can.

Some drivers complete Initial CPC before their driving lessons so that they can start work as soon as they’ve passed their practical driving test.

We would generally advise leaving the Module 4 until after you have undertaken some driving lessons. It is a practical test where you demonstrate familiarity with a vehicle, so most candidates prefer to wait until they have some experience in a vehicle.

Immediately.

There is no requirement to wait. Enterprise offers Module 4 tests at least once every week, so any wait should be minimal.

A Module 2 pass is valid for 2 years. To gain a DQC, you must pass a Module 4 test within 2 years of passing a Module 2 test.

Initial Driver CPC Training is compulsory training for new professional bus and truck drivers in the European Union. It is designed to ensure that drivers have the knowledge and skills to begin their professional career.

Initial CPC Training covers the fundamentals of professional driving. The training covers topics such as safe driving practices, vehicle maintenance, hazard perception, understanding UK road laws, and more. The course is designed to help drivers gain the necessary skills and knowledge to take on the responsibility of driving professionally in the UK.

The knowledge is tested in 2 methods. Firstly a case study based multiple choice test (Module 2). Secondly, a practical ‘show me – tell me’ Module 4 test.

The Module 2 Driver CPC case studies cover a variety of topics related to the professional driver. These include topics such as driver health and wellbeing, vehicle safety and security, customer service, driver’s hours and working time, loading and unloading, road safety awareness, and the legal aspects of driving.

There are 5 main elements: 1. Loading the vehicle following safety rules and to keep it secure 2. Preventing trafficking in illegal immigrants 3. Assessing emergency situations 4. Reducing physical risks to yourself or others 5. Performing a walkaround vehicle safety check

You must score at least 15 out of 20 marks for each topic and a total mark of at least 80 out of 100.

Initial Driver CPC Qualification

Initial Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is required for all new drivers of C1 or above who wish to drive for a living, or where the vehicle use would be classed as “hire & reward”. If you are a new LGV driver but passed your actual driving test before January 1997 and therefore hold “implied” or “grandfather rights” for C1 then you will require the Periodic Driver CPC.

Any current driver with C1 as “acquired rights” who is either considering looking for C1 7.5ton work to utilise their “grandfather entitlement” or are beginning the process of training for LGV Cat C will require 35 hours of Periodic CPC in order to drive commercially. Recent changes to Driver CPC means that a driver with “acquired rights” (category C1 or C) gained prior to 10th September 2009, can now do either the 35 hours of CPC training, or can now take the Initial Driver CPC Qualification route instead (modules 2 & 4) in order to gain their first Driver Qualification Card (DQC) after this they will require the periodic training, 35 hours over 5 years, in order to renew their DQC card at the end of the 5 year period. This change now makes it easier for those with acquired rights to get their first DQC where time to complete 35 hours of periodic training may be limited or difficult.

The LGV test process involves 4 separate modules, all these modules must be passed by any new driver who wishes to drive for a living.

  • Module 1 – LGV theory test, this module incorporates 2 separate tests, the LGV Theory test and the Hazard Perception test
  • Module 2 – Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) case studies test
  • Module 3 – Practical driving ability test
  • Module 4 – Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) practical demonstration test

The tests can be taken as above, but you must:

  • Pass module 1 before you can take module 3
  • Pass module 2 before you can take module 4
  • Modules 1 & 2 can be taken in any order, and you can take modules 3 & 4 in any order.

It is recommended that  Module 2  is taken  after passing Module 1  or at the same time, as most of the case study scenarios will refer to knowledge you will have gained through studying for the LGV theory test.  Module 2  is a case of self-study for the candidates in the same way as revision for  Module 1 Theory/hazard perception test would be conducted.

If you have successfully passed Module 1 and Module 2  before taking your practical LGV driving test course, then we can build the training for the  Module 4 practical demonstration test into your practical LGV driving test course or it can be done separately (subject to available test dates)

The case study questions are based around a scenario or picture, questions are then asked based on these, the answers to which should be know from the knowledge gained through the Theory test, essentially Module 2 is designed to assess:

  • Knowledge  (basic recall of facts)
  • Comprehension (basic understanding)
  • Application (practical use of knowledge and understanding)

The case studies part of the initial Driver CPC qualification lasts for 90 minutes, 15 minutes to acquaint yourself with the system and 75 minutes to answer questions.

The case studies test is conducted on a VDU, essentially the same as you did your Theory Test on, you will be presented with between 6-8 different case studies based around real-life scenarios, you will then get between 5-10 questions relating to each case study. You will need to answer 50 questions in total and achieve a pass mark of 40.

Module 4 – Driver CPC practical demonstration test

The test itself consists of 5 topic areas, to pass you need to score 15 out of a possible 20 points in each topic area (75%) but achieve an overall score of 80%

In all the topic areas the examiners will be looking for you to identify and mention key elements relating to the question asked. The Practical CPC demonstration test is conducted at the DVSA test centre, with the vehicle.

TOPIC AREAS

  • Ability to load the vehicle with due regard for safety rules and proper vehicle use
  • Security of your vehicle and its contents
  • Demonstrate an ability to prevent criminality and trafficking in illegal immigrants and contraband
  • Demonstrate an ability to assess emergency situations
  • Demonstrate an ability to prevent physical risk

On this page you are able to login and practice the LGV theory test. The cost is ÂŁ24+VAT which can be paid for over the phone. Within 24 hours you will receive your user name and password and will be able to access your portal. Your account will be available for 90 days and can be used as many times as you need. After 90 days if you require an extension you can do so for ÂŁ10+VAT. You will also have our full phone support for anything you might be having trouble with.
