Both current University of Helsinki doctoral candidates and new applicants planning doctoral studies are eligible to apply for these positions.

Please read the application instructions carefully before applying. If you are also planning to apply for the right to pursue a post-graduate doctoral degree, remember to read the instructions related to applying for a doctoral study right .

Salaried doctoral candidate positions are aimed at enabling full-time work on dissertations and postgraduate studies, with the goal of completing a doctoral degree in four years. The exact duration of employment, its’ start and end dates are determined in the employment contract.

The salary and other further details concerning the employment relationship are available in the call for applications .

Applications for a salaried position in a doctoral programme are submitted by completing an electronic form and enclosing the required attachments.

If you already have the right to pursue a post-graduate doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki and you are applying for a salaried position in your doctoral programme:

  • Read the application instructions regarding salaried positions
  • Complete the electronic application form

According to the guidelines of the University of Helsinki, individuals recruited to salaried doctoral candidate positions must gain admittance to doctoral studies (doctoral study right) within the six-month trial period of the employment.

If you already have the right to pursue a post-graduate doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, you may apply for a salaried position from another doctoral programme that suits your research profile. If you receive a salaried position from another doctoral programme, you will need to change your doctoral programme. Please note that you may need to reapply for post-graduate study rights if your faculty or target degree change in relation to an awarded salaried position. This application should be made in the spring at the latest, but please note that this may affect the start date of your potential employment.

If you are applying for a salaried position in more than one doctoral programme, please complete a separate application form for each one.

Research profile

Doctorate-level study is an opportunity to expand upon your interests and expertise in a community that really values research; and to make an original, positive contribution to learning in literature and related fields.

As the oldest department of English Literature in the UK, based in one of the largest and most diverse Schools in the University of Edinburgh, we are the ideal place for PhD study.

Our interdisciplinary environment brings together specialists in all periods and genres of literature and literary analysis.

Research excellence

Based on our performance in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF), over 90 per cent of our research and impact is classed as world-leading and internationally excellent by Research Professional. 69 per cent is graded at the world-leading level – the highest of REF’s four categories.

In Times Higher Education's REF analysis, English at Edinburgh is ranked fifth in the UK (out of more than 90 institutions) for:

  • the overall quality of our publications and other outputs
  • the impact of our research on people’s lives
  • our supportive research environment

Given the breadth and depth of our expertise, we are able to support students wishing to develop research projects in any field of Anglophone literary studies. These include American studies, literary and critical theory, the history of the book, gender and sexuality studies, and global Anglophone literatures - where our specialisms include Pacific, African, South Asian, and African-American writing.

We have particular strengths in each of the main periods of English and Scottish Literature:

  • Renaissance/early modern
  • Enlightenment
  • 21st century
  • Contemporary

Emergent research themes in the department include the digital humanities, the economic humanities, the environmental humanities and literature and medicine.

  • Explore our range of research centres, networks and projects in English and Scottish Literature

Working with colleagues elsewhere in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, and across the wider University, we are able to support PhD theses crossing boundaries between disciplines and/or languages.

  • Be inspired by the range of PhD research in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures

Over the course of your PhD, you’ll be expected to complete an original body of work under the expert guidance of your supervisors leading to a dissertation of usually between 80,000 and 100,000 words.

You will be awarded your doctorate if your thesis is judged to be of an appropriate standard, and your research makes a definite contribution to knowledge.

  • Read our pre-application guidance on writing a PhD research proposal

Go beyond the books

Beyond the Books is a podcast from the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (LLC) that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at research and the people who make it happen.

Listen to a mix of PhD, early career and established researchers talk about their journey to and through academia and about their current and recent research.

Leiden University Centre for Linguistics

PhD programme

The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) has a longstanding tradition in research in the world’s languages and features unique linguistic expertise. At LUCL, we help develop interdisciplinary approaches to linguistic phenomena by facilitating the interaction between data-driven and theory-driven linguistic research. Here you can study linguistic diversity from a wide variety of theoretical perspectives.

Affiliations

As you can see in this schematic overview , PhD-positions are divided into three different  categories:

An  employed PhD position constitutes a four-year full time (or five year 0,8 fte part-time) research position, with full funding (sufficient for general subsistence).

Application for an employed position is in response to advertisement by  Leiden university . Vacancies are advertised on the LUCL and Leiden University websites, and other online channels. They become available through external research funding (such as  NWO or the European Union) with the university acting as grant-holding institution and employer. Alternatively, positions will be made available through special projects on institute, faculty or university level. A third option is that you receive funding through the  NWO call ‘PhDs in the Humanities’ .

The research of many of our PhD candidates is self-funded, meaning that they bring their own funding for general subsistence, from sources other than Leiden University. Candidates applying for a contract position are required to pay an annual fee of €2,800. This fee entitles the PhD student to:

  • supervision by at least two LUCL members,
  • a personal teaching program with courses for didactics, academic writing, etc.
  • a personal budget for conference visits and/or field-work (under approval of the institute manager),
  • access to all courses within LUCL,
  • membership of  LOT  and access to LOT summer and LOT winter school,
  • a (shared) workspace, including a computer account and a University Library card,
  • yearly progress interviews
  • access to all professional and social meetings of LUCL,
  • contribution to the costs for the publication of the dissertation.

Besides this fee, there are several other financial matters that you may wish to consider (see Costs of living in the Netherlands ).

External PhD candidates  are not entitled to any facilities or financial support by LUCL, except for a contribution towards the publication of their dissertation.  Candidates applying for an external position are required to pay an annual fee of €400.

Application and Admission

If you are interested in starting your PhD at LUCL, you must apply via the Graduate School for Humanities , selecting LUCL as the institute of your choice. Please visit this website to find out more about application procedures and requirements. Once the Graduate School has made sure that your application is complete, it will be forwarded to LUCL. A  review committee at LUCL will then decide whether you will be accepted as a PhD candidate.

Please note, if you are applying for a contract or external PhD position , your prospective supervisor(s) should already have declared their availability and support of your work before  you start the formal application procedure.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program with 18 specialisations is a dual-degree program that combines the UK competency framework training system and the Université Libérale de Paris. The Ph.D. in specialised research is the highest degree program and academic degree.

The Doctor of Philosophy – PhD in 18 specialisations focuses on in-depth research knowledge in business administration and management. Students have access to research from the start, with highly practical and applied topics.

In contrast to the Doctor of Business Administration program, students must have at least one scientific article published in ISI/SCOPUS journals, journals owned by the Liberal University of Paris, or journals linked to.

The Doctor of Business Administration at the Université Libérale de Paris (Paris-U) is a dual degree program offered by France and the United Kingdom. Students will graduate with two independent degrees.

Research students can advance their careers as experts, theoretical and practical research specialists, lecturers, or senior positions in the industry.

If students want to conduct in-depth international research, publish more international articles on the ISI/SCOPUS system, and so on, they can enroll in PostDoc programs tailored to their research interests.

Graduate students can also publish books, studies developed during their studies, or research that comes up during their studies.

  • Students are full-time Université Libérale de Paris students (Paris-U).
  • Students pursue the original program as full-time students at Université Libérale de Paris in France (Paris-U).
  • The program is entirely taught in English. Université Libérale de Paris (Paris-U) does not adopt the education system for French-taught programs in France.

The amount of time an individual will spend on these projects will depend on their qualifications and the time they have to put into the project. There are several different types of English speaking graduate programs in Europe.

The most common type of graduate programs for UK expats is the short-term placement or paid graduate programs. These can range from one month to two years, depending on the level of training you have completed. Many graduate programs training in the UK offers paid training in return for work experience. An example of a short term paid graduate programs opportunity in the UK is the role of a translator.

Translators usually work in hotel or restaurant staff positions and are responsible for ensuring that all written documents are correct. They also help with understanding and correcting papers that may not be clearly understood. Translators in the hotel industry will usually have received some language experience through previous employment but may also have learnt enough through personal study to qualify. A popular type of language experience for translators is to work through an intermediary company that provides work experience for workers and allows them to gain the needed skills at a much quicker rate.

An alternative option is a placement working in a similar environment. This can be anything from a language school to a grocery store. Companies that place workers in these positions do so as a way of testing potential. If the placement is successful, the worker will get a lot more responsibility, a significant salary increase and benefits such as sick pay. Placement in this type of position will usually last anywhere from three to six months. During this time, the worker will go to the location where they work and practice their new skills with other employees.

Language schools usually require their trainees to take a placement test in which they are assessed on their knowledge of the English language. The school will provide the test, and if the student passes, they will receive a certificate. This certification may be required to get a job in this field, and the employer will look at it in conjunction with other criteria. For example, some companies prefer applicants who have taken further language training. Some may require people to have previous experience in a similar position, and others will not accept those who have not worked within the industry for some time.

Agencies also place workers in translation and interpretation positions. These positions require a great deal of knowledge of the language and a wide range of skills. People put in these types of jobs will usually receive on-the-job training and sometimes on-site-site on-siteon-site experience. On-siteOn-site experience may be as little as one day or as long as a week or two.

The primary role of an English teaching graduate program is to work in a classroom. Most graduate programs will require workers to complete a graduate program that lasts between six and twelve months. During this time, students will complete a substantial amount of work in an on-siteon-site training centre. Upon completion of this work, these workers will apply for jobs in language agencies and translation and interpretation firms.

These positions do not require extensive training, although the more skilled language professionals may be required to undergo training to gain access to higher-paying jobs. Generally, most workers do not receive any actual work experience but instead learn essential language skills through on-site, on-site graduate programs. Companies that place workers in these positions need workers who can communicate effectively and get a lot of work done quickly. In addition to receiving valuable work experience, those who participate in these programs will also gain practical life skills to carry with them after their employment.

Yes, you can study at a German university in English. This is not a rumor, it’s not a myth, it’s a fact! Some of our study counselors at MyGermanUniversity have studied in Germany as international students from Peru, the United States, Brazil and Georgia and have first-hand experience at universities in Germany which teach in English.

German universities are well aware of the fact that if they want to attract international students, offering programs in English is a must. While international students are also welcome to apply to German-taught programs, it’s rare that students from abroad are fluent in German at an academic level. Moreover, universities that offer English-taught programs also usually have English-speaking staff at admissions offices, registration offices, and all appropriate and important facilities on campus.

English-taught programs at German universities are a standard and offered even at Germany’s internationally top-ranked universities . Because all of these universities are public, it means that they do not charge tuition fees, even for non-EU students! So don’t think you are settling for a second-class degree, Germany ranks third in the world for top-ranked universities, so be sure to check them out and see if one of them is right for you. For more information on tuition fees at German universities, read our article about “ Tuition-free Universities in Germany taught in English ”.

Simply put, no! To study at a German university, you don’t need to speak German as long as you meet the minimum language requirements for your desired degree program. However, you will have more options if you consider programs that are taught in English AND German. Therefore, speaking German will give you a greater selection of study programs available to you. Furthermore, your integration into daily life will be better and you will have more options on the job market.

Generally, you should be able to get by with little to no German. However, we encourage students looking to come to Germany, to explore some free online German language courses to have some basics in German. Depending on the city you are planning to study in, you may need more German skills. Additionally, if you plan on searching for a shared flat with other students off-campus or communicating with doctors and locals, having some basic German is very helpful.

We strongly encourage international students to seek out some resources to study a bit of German but know that if you are applying to an English-taught program, that your university will have resources available to you in English regarding admissions, registration, visa details, and more. Many German universities also have German courses available which you can sign up for once in Germany. Alternatively, you can seek out courses from a German language school.

Simply put, yes, there are free universities in Germany. There are no tricks or hidden fees, public universities in Germany are FREE. This applies to all students, even non-EU students, who choose to attend a public university. As previously mentioned, even top-ranked universities in Germany are tuition-free.

Every university in Germany charges a so-called semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag) which averages from 200 - 300 € per semester (there are also few colleges that charge higher or lower amounts). This contribution pays for administrative costs, social services, and your public transportation ticket which provides you with unlimited use of the local public transportation system.

There are some important exceptions to the tuition-free rule for you to keep in mind:

Professional/Executive Programs:

Executive study programs are professional degree programs that are offered at many universities in Germany may charge a marginal tuition fee, some examples being an L.LM, MBA, MPA, or the Erasmus Mundus joint master’s degree.

The state of Baden-Württemberg:

The state of Baden-Württemberg in the south of Germany has a mandatory tuition fee of 1,500 € per semester to all non-EU students. Some of the state’s more well known cities such as Heidelberg, Freiburg, Stuttgart, and Constance, will all charge this non-EU tuition fee at their universities.

Private Universities:

Germany has a great selection of private universities to choose from. It is important to note that private universities charge tuition to all of their students (not just non-EU students), though the tuition cost is generally lower than tuition fees at other private universities abroad, averaging between 5,000 and 7,000 € per semester.

While more than 200 universities in Germany offer degree programs taught in English, there are some which are more popular among international students. This can be due to their location in large cities or their top-ranking status. Regardless, we have compiled just a few universities that students from abroad show great interest in and listed them below. Keep in mind that this list is not comprehensive and does not include all universities with English-taught programs .

Best English-Taught Universities in Europe

See the best Bachelor’s universities in Europe for international students, ranking for the most engaging, affordable, and powerful English-taught programs for you.

english speaking phd programs in europe

Our undergraduate rankings for the best universities in Europe list may feel a bit scandalous or novel, given it hasn’t been influenced by external factors like sponsors and other rankings, nor is it based on disingenuous factors like research.

The rankings for best universities in Europe for international students reflect many years of on-the-ground research, vetting, and experience by ourselves and our members, and speaks directly to what really matters to US students pursuing an English-taught undergraduate degree in Europe.

Why Study Abroad in European Universities

Studying abroad has its own set of commonly mentioned roadblocks, like knowing the official language of the country. But there’s  good news: there are thousands of bachelors and master’s degree options in Europe without foreign language requirements, meaning these are all taught 100% in English.  You can find all the programs from the top colleges them listed in  our database .

Check out our Ultimate Guide to Bachelor’s Degrees in Europe while you’re here.

Culture at Universities in Europe

This isn’t to say that you won’t step out of your comfort zone when ordering a beer at the pub, but this should be seen as a one of the main benefits of studying abroad. If you don’t speak the local language (yet), you will quickly learn to read body language while avoiding jargon or slang that isn’t useful. Also, your direct communication will improve because you will learn to choose your words carefully and with maximum impact.

Lower Tuition Fees

This will come as no surprise to you: In recent years, college tuition has skyrocketed to levels that just a few decades ago would have seemed inconceivable. Like many parents, we had squirreled away what we could in our children’s college funds. Though the national average for private university tuition is reported to be $32,000, most of the schools I looked into were closer to a jaw-dropping $50,000 a year! With that price tag, most middle-class families have no choice but to take on considerable debt if they want their children to obtain that four-year degree. A recent study showed that  only 38% of recent college graduates felt that their education was worth the cost .

Have you seen  this recent news article ? Some US schools are on the cusp of charging $100,000 per year for tuition.

Compare that to the more than 500 schools in Europe that offer more than 4,000 English-taught bachelor’s degree programs. On average, international students would pay $8,000 per year to attend one of these schools. One of the reasons tuition is so reasonable across Europe is because it is subsidized by each country. There are almost 800 hundred programs alone with tuition less than $4,000 per year and even a number that are tuition-free—even for international students. The savings are further increased when you factor in that many bachelor’s programs take 3 years (vs 4 years) to complete. In many cases, it  costs less to obtain a full bachelor’s degree in Europe , including the cost of travel, than ONE year of US out-of-state or private school tuition.

All of the schools in our rankings pages offer a real degree of tuition affordability, especially when compared to counterpart programs in the States.

The Problem With Other Rankings for Best Universities in Europe

While there are many rankings of international universities, college rankings usually refer to those that are most influential like US News, Times Higher Education, QS World University Rankings, and the ShanghaiRanking (ARWU). We spend a good amount of time cautioning against using this factor as a major criterion. All ranking systems have different strengths, weaknesses, and biases. A school that is on one list may not appear at all on another. Further, not all schools are eligible for the rankings which rely on research and Ph.D. programs heavily. If we ever reference this factor in our materials it’s because we realize it’s such a major part of the American mindset.

Research Universities

While the domestic US News rankings have their issues, their Global Rankings are truly flawed. The most important limitation to note is that, while there are a number of quality indicators US News uses in ranking US schools, their international rankings look exclusively at factors around research (such as global research reputation, number of publications, number of books published, number of citations, percentage of total publications that are among the 10 percent most cited, etc.).

An Irrelevant High Standard

So what does that really tell you about your educational experience? Nothing. Further, since the rankings are based solely on research related factors, small schools, specialized schools, and schools with an emphasis on applied and practical knowledge will not even be eligible for these rankings, though many of these schools are excellent with very reputable programs.

The New Way to Rank the Best Universities in Europe

We are sometimes asked if college in Europe is as “good” as in the US. People assume a high degree of educational quality in the states simply because of the standard ratings, which are more-or-less unrelated to the educational experience or outcomes of the students. Honestly, the fact that our college graduates test only as high school grads from the Netherlands and Finland is quite telling…

The Beyond the States Ranking System

This is why we’ve created a new kind of Ranking system, authored exclusively by Beyond the States, focusing primarily on school/program factors that really matter to US students choosing a degree in Europe:

  • Accessibility and availability of English-taught degrees
  • Affordability for international students
  • Notable employability record and economic mobility
  • Quality of international student life on campus/in the city
  • Ample international student supports in place
  • Availability of study abroad and internship opportunities
  • Strong student reviews
  • International exposure

2. Vrije University of Amsterdam

Vrije University of Amsterdam is no stranger to international Ranked lists, since it is a world-renowned research university in Europe. Located in the vibrant city of Amsterdam, VU has a notable international staff and student body. Thirty English-taught programs for study abroad here, spanning many areas of study, and like many Dutch research universities, it has liberal arts programs as well. For US students, it has a FAFSA number.

3. University of Pecs

Study abroad in Europe at the UNESCO-recognized ancient city of Pecs, Hungary at the oldest university in the country, founded in 1367. A lively, cultured city, Pecs University was once the European Capital of Culture. The internationally recognized University of Pecs has had a long history of offering many and varied English-taught programs, and therefore familiar with international students, for which the school/city has a large population. Exceptional student supports offered here, such as a mentor program strictly for international students that assists with acclimation.

4. Erasmus University of Rotterdam

Located in the bustling and urban port city of Rotterdam, Netherlands, EUR attracts students from around 37 different countries world-wide. Boasting a vibrant student scene, EUR has a modern and “true” campus that’s a 15-minute bike ride or 20-minute tram ride from the city center. There is a strong student support system in place, and many student associations and clubs to take part in.

5. Toulouse Business School

Although Toulouse Business School has only a single English-taught bachelor’s offering in Management: Business Administration, Management and Operations, it is one of our favorite undergraduate business options in Europe. TBS is a multi-campus school, with locations in Toulouse, Barcelona, Casablanca, and students have the option to study in all of these cities. Incredibly impressive curriculum, student supports, internationalization, employability #’s, and safe and affordable tuition and cost of living options. TBS emphasizes learning through experience with applied learning techniques, small groups, and work experience placements.

6. Maastricht University

Maastricht University is known for being one of the most international and fully bilingual schools, and the youngest university in the Netherlands. There is an incredibly large international student (50%) and faculty (40%) population, leading to excellent international student resources with a wider range of study abroad programs. Practical learning is emphasized at UM, something that is often missing at research universities, and study abroad is a requirement for many of their programs. You’ll find stunning and modern facilities that rest within a city that strikes a unique balance between old and new. For those looking at business programs, UM has the rare “triple crown” accreditation, and for US students, there is a FAFSA #.

7. Charles University

Situated in the famously beautiful European city of Prague, Charles University was founded in 1348, making it one of the oldest universities in the world. Yet, it is also renowned as a modern, dynamic, cosmopolitan and prestigious research institution. CU provides a variety of undergraduate options for students who want to take advantage of the affordable tuition and cost of living in Eastern Europe, while studying in a truly livable city with a high quality of life. For US students, CU has a FAFSA #.

8. Carlos III University of Madrid

Carlos III University of Madrid is one of our standout universities, with a dedication to internationalization, true affordability of its many English-taught programs, notable accreditation (AACSB) for its business programs, and has strong student supports. UC3M allows and encourages its students to study abroad for up to two years at one of its partner schools, many of which are in the US, like Boston College, Tulane University, Duke University, Vassar and Middlebury. A US student could study abroad at any of these schools, but still pay the relatively small (6,000-7,000 euros) UC3M tuition, versus the high price tags of these schools, if they were so inclined. Admission can be competitive here, but they offer a foundation program that can give a boost to those who don’t initially make the cut.

9. Central European University

No other school on our list has both their own country’s accreditation and US accreditation, but CEU offers this double-accreditation. Located in one of the most “livable” cities in the world, Vienna, Central European University claims that the majority of its student body is international. Small class sizes, remarkable facilities, and uniquely dynamic and multidisciplinary degrees, like Philosophy, Politics, and Economy, for instance. Admissions can be competitive here, but it may be worth your while. This school has a FAFSA # for US students.

8. Riga Technical University

Riga Technical University really impressed our founder, Jenn Viemont, when she visited the school a few years ago. This internationally recognized polytechnic university – the largest in Latvia – has 24 English-taught programs that are truly rigorous, hands-on, and usually include lab work and internships. RTU offers really good value, a large and well-supported international student body, and even has an international student council. For those choosing more technical vocations, this school is a gem.

Discovering the Best Universities in Europe

To shape a top 10 list of anything is risky and difficult, especially when there are, in our case, oh so many good options. For instance, we set aside schools this time in countries like Norway, Sweden, Germany, Italy, and Ireland. Not that there aren’t a slew of prestigious and internationally recognized schools in these locations, but because they each have their own set of admissions obstacles, or in the case of Ireland, their programs tend to comparatively have higher price tags. Of course, these hurdles are certainly achievable, and we know many students who have successfully attended programs in these countries. But our rankings criteria, in this case, demand that a school is largely accessible and affordable for US students.

Notable Mentions for Best Colleges in Europe

I can’t walk away without recognizing a few schools in these countries that may be worth going the extra mile to attend, like The University of Oslo in Norway, or Lund University or Uppsala University in Sweden, or University of Freiberg and Technical University of Munich in Germany, or Bocconi University in Italy, and many in Ireland like University of College Cork and Trinity College Dublin. I mean…I could go on.

You may have noticed that this Ranked list is heavy on Dutch schools, and this is because the Netherlands has more English-taught degrees for international students than any other country in our database, and many of the schools here are internationally-recognized. With this representation in mind, our list takes into account otherwise variety among types of universities and locations.

All in all, the best universities on our ranked list made it there because they seem to come up again and again for us, either when we’re creating Best Fit Lists or as features for our Programs of the Month, or they generally appeal to a large number of our members and international students. And there’s a reason for this – they uniquely, consistently meet the criteria above we’ve carefully devised after years of experience in the field of English-taught degrees in Europe.

Why You Should Consider Studying in Europe

Studying in the US can be a great experience, but it’s not the only option out there. If you’re looking for something different than what American colleges can offer, studying in Europe might be the perfect choice. Beyond the States offers students a unique opportunity to get a degree from a top-ranking European university while still being able to study in English.  We’ll match you with your best fit college and your ideal degree , all without the need to learn a new language.

To see the top Master’s degrees at universities in Europe, visit our  rankings page .

If packing up your whole life and moving sounds more exciting than terrifying, then you’ll love what colleges in Europe have to offer you. These are 5 reasons why going to college in Europe will be the best decision you’ll ever make:

1. Tuition is much more affordable than the US.

In continental Europe, the average cost of all the English-taught bachelor’s programs is just $7,390 per year. Since 1985, US college costs have surged by about 1000 percent, and tuition and fees continue to rise. Even when you factor in the cost of travel, going to college in Europe if often cheaper than one year of tuition at a state college in the US.

2. There are thousands of English-taught degrees.

Choice is another key issue. When cost is a chief consideration, you may be limited to only in-state schools, where tuition is lower. What if your in-state schools aren’t a good option for your chosen field of study? In Europe there are thousands of programs to choose from across 212 areas of study, and they are all taught 100% in English, so there’s no need to worry about learning a new language.

3. International exposure is essential and highly valued.

Students who studied abroad stand out from the crowd when seeking jobs after college. The very act of leaving their comfort zone to make a fresh start in a new place builds skills and confidence that will be carried throughout a student’s life. Silicon Valley billionaire investor, Chris Sacca, describes international study experience as a critical differentiating characteristic among candidates. According to former General Electric CEO Jack Welch, “The Jack Welch of the future cannot be like me. I spent my entire career in the United States. The next head of [General Electric] will be somebody who spent time in Bombay, in Hong Kong, in Buenos Aires.”

4. You’ll avoid the US admissions rat race.

The college admissions process in the US has become a race to the bottom as students compete with their peers for a single spot in a liberal arts college, convinced by parents and guidance counselors that their survival rests on playing a musical instrument or varsity sport. Many smart kids don’t do well on standardized tests. This doesn’t limit them as much when looking outside of the US, as many colleges in Europe do not require standardized tests. Many countries see entry into universities as a right, rather than a privilege, so admission standards are not as stringent.

5. Spend your weekends & breaks exploring the world.

Travel opportunities abound when attending college in Europe. For example, Lille, a city in northern France with multiple universities, is close to major cities such as Brussels, London, and Paris via high-speed rail. Air travel, especially with the rise of affordable airlines like Ryanair, EasyJet, and Transavia, can be comparable in price to rail travel, so many more destinations open up for short-term travel.

How to Get Into the World’s Top Universities

When you also factor in the many problems with US higher education, it is imprudent not to consider other possibilities. It is true there are many excellent schools in the United States—I don’t think anyone would argue that. There are some that have managed to look at applicants as people, and not just a checklist of achievements. Some even have reasonable tuition rates, and/or professors that actively teach and have highly engaged students. Despite this, I have yet to find a school in the United States that addresses all of these issues: allows students to opt out of the rat race the admissions process has become, have reasonable tuition, AND have positive results around the educational experience and post-graduation outcomes. Not every school in Europe provides all this either, but the schools listed in  our database  do.

The University does not require that applicants major in a particular field. In fact, the University seeks individuals with broad educational backgrounds. Nevertheless, each candidate must demonstrate a record of academic achievement. Ability to master scientific concepts and employ them with confidence is essential for success in this program. In this connection.

Apart from these academic characteristics, the Admissions Committee recognizes a responsibility to consider applicants as individuals; particularly in the evaluation of the breadth of their educational experience, their personality traits, maturity level, and appropriate motivation and commitment to a career in medicine.

The University also conducts “preliminary interviews” of students contemplating medical school. Specific actions and courses which enhance applications in the future are discussed with the admissions staff. Furthermore, previously unsuccessful candidates for medical school may wish to take advantage of this service to solicit advice in the improvement of their applications.

Of particular importance to some applicants, is the early admissions procedure (EAP) according to which candidates may apply for early acceptance on a preferred basis. Successful candidates in this ongoing procedure may reserve their place in the class commencing in the following September, thus eliminating a great deal of uncertainty in their academic plans and prospects.
