Understanding the Turnitin Interface

When students are enrolled in a course, their names appear in the assignment box. If they haven’t submitted their work, “No Submission” is displayed. Here’s how you can navigate through:

  • To view peers who also haven’t submitted, click the title column heading.
  • If no assignments are listed, ensure you’re accessing the correct course before reaching out to your instructor.
  • Accidentally enrolled multiple times? Click the author column to spot duplicates.
  • For better organization, refer to the “Getting your Students Started” section.

Quick Guide to Access Assignment Inbox:

  • Click on the “All Classes” tab to go to the Instructor homepage.
  • Select your class name to reach the class homepage.
  • Click the “Viewlink” in the Action column. Late submissions will be highlighted in red.

3 Strategies to Bypass Turnitin Deadlines

Submit to an assignment

Preparing to submit.

To submit a paper to an assignment on Turnitin, the user must log in and upload a file to an existing assignment.

Assignments in Turnitin cannot accept student submissions until the assignment start date and time has passed.

Assignments may also reject submissions after the due date and time set by the instructor.

To check the start date and due date information, either click on the name of the assignment in the class portfolio page or view the start and due dates located under the assignment name.

This action opens a pop-up window showing assignment preference information, including start and due dates/times as well as other assignment information or special instructions.

Log in to turnitin.com (or turnitinuk.com if you're in the UK).

See our logging in guide if you can't quite remember how to log in to Turnitin.

Once you've logged in, you should see your homepage listing the classes you enrolled in .

Select the name of the class where you'd like to upload a file.

This will take you to your Class Homepage for that class.

Select the Open button to the right of the assignment name.

This will take you to the file submission page.

Uploading a submission

Before you proceed, we advise checking that the file you'd like to submit will be accepted. Check out the accepted file types and sizes before you begin.

Only a single file may be submitted to a Turnitin assignment. Any second or subsequent submission will overwrite the original submission in this assignment. Contact your instructor if there is more than one file that must be submitted to complete the directions given by your instructor; additional assignments may be created or you may need to combine multiple documents into a single file of an acceptable file type to be uploaded into Turnitin.

Before you submit you will be able to check the assignment details by selecting the assignment title bar.

To submit, select Upload Submission .

The ‘Submit File’ screen allows you to submit your paper to the assignment in three different ways.

Upload Submission

The Upload Submission method allows you to upload a file directly to Turnitin.

Select the Browse button, or drag your file directly onto the modal.

Make sure that you are uploading an allowed file type .

Once you are happy with your selected file for submission, select Upload and Review .

The Text Input method allows you to submit just the text of your assignment directly to Turnitin.

Enter or paste your submission title into the Submission Title field and then enter or paste your submission text into the Submission Text field.

Once you are happy with the text of your submission, select Upload and Review .

Cloud Submission

The Cloud Submission method allows you to submit from a cloud drive.

Select your file within the cloud drive.

Review and submit

Before you submit you will have an opportunity to check that the file you are about to submit is correct.

If resubmissions are not enabled for this assignment, you may not be able to resolve any incorrect submissions.

If you are happy with the file, select Submit to Turnitin to submit your assignment.

You will see a submission complete notice if your submission was successful. Please don't leave the submission process until you have seen this notice.

If resubmissions are allowed for the assignment and you need to resubmit your paper, you can click the resubmission icon. If you resubmit an edited paper, it will not compare to the first submission you made (i.e. you will not match the text to the previous submission resulting in a 90% match score).

After the submission has completed, a digital receipt is displayed in your browser window. A copy is also sent via email. It is important to use a valid email address to receive this copy of the digital receipt. Save the receipt and the submission ID it contains, as this is proof of a completed submission. If the digital receipt is not shown on screen after submission, return to the class portfolio page and view the assignment to ensure the paper submission completed correctly. Submissions can be checked and viewed by clicking on the title of the paper under the title column to the right of the assignment name.

There are two main settings to consider for late submissions and authorised extensions to Turnitin assignments. These only apply to the first-sit assignment, not the re-sit assignment as the deadline for the re-sit is final. 

The first-sit Turnitin submission point should be set to allow late submissions, as described in the section of this guide 'Setting up a Turnitin submission point'.

If a student has already made a submission prior to the deadline and needs to submit late, or has an agreed extension, their previously submitted paper will need to be removed from the submission point before they are able to submit another once the deadline has passed. This is because once the due date is reached, all submitted work is locked and re-submissions are not allowed.

The steps to correct each scenario are listed below.

First-sit assignments should be set to allow submissions after the due date. The steps below show how to check that this is the case and how to make changes if necessary.

Navigate to the Submit your work area and locate the Turnitin Assignment.

Select the title of the assignment link.

Go to the settings page using the cog icon and expand the Optional Settings section.

Ensure the Allow late submissions option is ticked.

Use the Submit button to save changes. If you do not need to make changes, you can navigate away from this page.

Removing papers to allow extensions and late submissions.

On the due date, all submitted work is locked for assessment and re-submission is not allowed. If you have given a student an extension and they have submitted a draft assignment before the due date, you will need to remove that draft submission from the inbox.

NOTE: For anonymous assignments, you will need to know the paper ID from the student in order to remove the correct submission. Ask the student to provide you with their Turnitin receipt which has this information on.

From the assignment inbox, locate the submission by Paper ID and open the Options for that paper. Choose 'Remove From Inbox' from the menu and confirm the removal.

NOTE: It is advisable to first download a copy of the original file as a backup, using the download link in the same location. There is no need to request a permanent deletion for the purpose of resubmission

Turnitin is a 'text-matching' software which is designed to educate students regarding appropriate citation and referencing techniques. Turnitin is also used to provide the ANU with confidence in the academic integrity of students work. Turnitin does this by comparing a student submission against an archive of Internet documents, Internet data, a repository of previously submitted papers, and subscription repository of periodicals, journals, and publications. Turnitin then creates an 'Originality Report' which can be viewed by both lecturers and students, which identifies where the text within a student submission has matched another source.

It is important to note that Turnitin does not detect plagiarism. Turnitin will only match the text within a student's assignment to text located elsewhere (e.g. found on the Internet, within journals or on databases of student papers). Correct interpretation of these results by both lecturers and students is essential for the successful use of Turnitin.  

A large number of leading Universities across the world, including several members of the Group of Eight, are currently using Turnitin to enhance the education experience they provide to their students.

The ANU uses Turnitin both as a tool to educate students regarding appropriate citation and referencing techniques as well as to provide the ANU with confidence in the academic integrity of students work. Turnitin also provides lecturers and tutors with modern online grading capabilities and enhances the way in which students receive their grades and feedback on assessment items.

It is important to understand that Turnitin is not a punitive tool or a mechanism to 'catch students out'. The primary purpose of using Turnitin is to provide students with an interactive means of understanding and applying citation and referencing techniques in their work, and provide online grading to academic staff.

If misconduct is suspected as a result of using Turnitin, information provided through the use of Turnitin would not in itself determine any wrongdoing. This information would be considered within the wider context of the ANU Code of Practice for Student Academic Integrity. 

If a lecturer chooses to use Turnitin for a particular Course or Assignment, the lecturer will create a 'Turnitin Assignment' within Wattle. When a student submits a 'Turnitin Assignment' within Wattle, the assignment will then be submitted to Turnitin for text-matching.

Turnitin matches the text within an assignment by comparing a student's submission against an archive of internet documents, internet data, a repository of previously submitted papers, and subscription repository of periodicals, journals, and publications. Turnitin then creates an 'Originality Report' which can be viewed by both lecturers and students, which identifies where the text within a student submission has matched another source.

Turnitin also stores a record of all submitted assignments on central database. This is done so that future submissions, for example assignments submitted to the ANU in future years, will be checked against previously submitted assignments.

While Turnitin retains a copy of submitted assignments, it does not reproduce these assignments or disclose them to third parties. This means that while a copy of your student's assignment is stored, it is never shown to a third party and the student retains ownership of their assignment.

The 'Originality Report' is the report Turnitin creates after it has assessed a student submission against the Internet, repositories of previously submitted papers, and subscription repositories of periodicals, journals, and publications.

The 'Originality Report' identifies where content in a student's submission has been 'text-matched' to other sources. The 'Originality Report' shows the overall 'similarity index' percentage (the total percent of the submission matched against other sources), and provides a detailed breakdown of what text within the submission has been matched against what source (e.g. internet sites, journals or previous submissions).

Please refer to the detailed reference guide 'How to Interpret an Originality Report' for additional information. 

Once a lecturer has created a Turnitin assignment within a Course you are enrolled in, you will be able to access the assignment and submit your assignment via Wattle.

The following Reference Sheets have been developed to assist students in using Turnitin:

This will depend on how your Lecturer has created your 'Turnitin Assignment'. The default approach of the ANU will be to allow students to submit their assignments to Turnitin, review their Original Reports, make any necessary modifications to their assignments, and then resubmit. This approach ensures ongoing education and feedback for students regarding the 'text-matches' identified within their submission, and any missing or potentially incorrect citations or referencing can be corrected prior to final submission.

Your Lecturer however may choose to take a different approach for a variety of reasons. If you have any concerns, you should discuss them with your Lecturer in the first instance. 

Turnitin will only provide one Originality Report in any given 24 hour period. This means that when you first submit an assignment to Turnitin, you will receive an Originality Report in a matter of minutes. If you then resubmit that assignment, you will not see the new Originality Report for 24 hours. This is designed to prevent abuse of the Turnitin system. Remember, the aim is not to try and get as low a 'similarity index' as possible, and a moderate to high 'similarity index' may not be an issue depending on the nature of your particular assignment.

If you are unable to view an Originality Report it is likely that you have resubmitted your assignment. Don't worry if this happens close to the assignment due date – even though you will not be able to see a new Originality Report for 24 hours, your most recently submitted assignment will have been submitted to your lecturer. 

For Microsoft Word files, Turnitin uses the a similar word count used by MS Word and does not count the words in text-boxes, footnotes, and endnotes.

For PDF files, a different algorithm is used, as there is no inbuilt word count tool in Adobe PDF. As such, PDF submissions will result in inflated word count as all the text will be counted as regular word count, including footnotes, endnotes and words in text-boxes.

GradeMark is an additional feature within Turnitin which allows Lecturers and Tutors to mark student submissions completely online. Within an Originality Report, Lecturers and Tutors can use GradeMark to provide feedback through inserting digital comments, voice comments and Rubrics as well as provide an overall assignment grade. 

If your Lecturer and/or Tutors have used GradeMark to mark your assignment, you will be able to view your marks and the comments and feedback provided once the 'Post date' has passed for the relevant assignment. The 'Post Date' refers to the date your Lecturer has specified as the date from which grades for a particular assignment will become visible to students.

The following Reference Sheet has been developed to assist students in using GradeMark:

PeerMark is an addition feature available from Turnitin which enables students to view, review, score and evaluate papers submitted by their classmates. This function is not currently available at the ANU, but is being assessed and may become available at a later date.

The use of Turnitin at the ANU will be integrated with our existing learning management system Wattle. In order to protect student's privacy, additional functionality has been incorporated into this integration which will transform each student's email address into a unique identifier (e.g. [email protected]) before the student's submission is sent to Turnitin.

This will effectively remove a student's name or 'U' number from their email address, so there is no information stored on the Turnitin database which can connect a student to their submission.

If you do not want your name to be stored on the Turnitin database, you should remove your name and 'U' number from the content of your assignment (e.g. remove from your cover sheet or from the document header or footer). As described above, your email address will not be stored on the Turnitin database.

From a legal perspective, when a student submits their assignment to Turnitin and the assignment is stored on the Turnitin database, the student provides Turnitin with a perpetual license to store and use their assignment for the purposes of textual similarity review only.

It is important to understand however, that students retain the ownership of the content of their submissions, including their intellectual property. It is also important to understand that Turnitin will not provide or display the content of a student's submission to any third party.  

Q. Why do I have to accept a Turnitin 'User Agreement' the first time I use Turnitin?

ANU staff and students are licensed to use the Turnitin service as part of the agreement between the ANU and Turnitin. However staff and students, as the end-users of the service, are required to confirm that they agree to the terms set out in the 'User Agreement'.

Q.  Am I required to use Turnitin?

If Turnitin is being used in a Course you are enrolled in, the ANU highly recommends that students use Turnitin, however, it is not mandatory for either lecturers or students. If a student does not want to submit an assignment to Turnitin, the student may 'opt-out' of using Turnitin for that assignment.  

If a student does not want to submit an assignment to Turnitin, the student may 'opt-out' by approaching their lecturer and explaining they do not want to use Turnitin. Please contact your lecturer to discuss alternative submission methods within a reasonable time prior to your submission date. Many lecturers require this to take place before the end of Week 3.

Some students may see an error message which states: "Loading Error  This paper is not available  Error M14:11." The error can be caused by multiple reasons, such as internet connectivity issue or server issue, etc.

If you experience this issue, the following are the available options:

1. If it's before the due date, please return to your document, open it and save it in a different format (see below) before re-submitting the assignment. When re-submitting, it may be useful to upload a version of the paper in a different document type. This may improve the chances of the paper being processed correctly. 

In general, the use of PDF submissions may assist in lowering the chance of M14:11 issues.

Note: It is important to note that the original submission date and time will be overwritten when re-submitting. If the due date for the assignment has already passed, the resubmitted paper will appear as 'late' (highlighted in red) in the Submission Inbox. Students are advised to contact the lecturers or tutors before re-submitting if the due date has passed.

2. If it's after the due date and resubmission is not suitable, please contact Wattle Support. We can request Turnitin support to regenerate the originality report.

Some students may see an error message which states: "There was an error trying to create the submission in Turnitin. Please consult your tutor or Moodle administrator for further details." It also lists Fault Code: failure with more details.

This error occurs due to the use of the Safari browser. Please switch to another browser, such as Firefox or Chrome and it should resolve the issue.

You should not need to log into Turnitin when you access the Originality Report through Wattle.

Students enrolled in a certain class appear in the assignment box and in case one has not submitted their paper ‘’No Submission’’ appears as the paper title. To view your classmates who have also not submitted their assignment, click the title column heading to categorize the inbox by paper title.

It is worth noting if there is no assignment listed; neither you nor your classmates will be in a position to submit the assignment until that assignment is created. Therefore make sure, you access the right course before contacting your instructor. Only the professor in charge of the class can create assignments.

  • To use the assignment inbox, go the ‘’All Classes’’ tab and it will take you to the Instructor homepage
  • From there, go to your desired class name and you will be in a position to access the class homepage
  • Then click the ‘’Viewlink’’ found in the Action column
  • If the assignment was submitted late the submission date will be red and in case no delivery has been made by the due date the word ‘’Late” will appear in red in the date column.

Viewing Late Submissions on Turnitin

Once you have successfully beaten the deadline using either of the above tricks, you can now turn in a late assignment via Turnitin with peace. To submit your assignment on Turnitin, you have to log in and then upload the file to the existing assignment.

1. File upload submission

  • Once you login to Turnitin, locate your desired class name

  • From Submit (pull-down menu), select single file upload

Submitting to Turnitin (including resubmission) – Student Guide

The majority of assignments at Roehampton are submitted through Turnitin via Moodle. Most assignment deadlines are 2pm which means your file must be uploaded before the world clock  changes from 1:59 to 2:00pm. Your computer clock being set to a different time will not be accepted as a reason for late submission.

You must allow plenty of time to submit to Turnitin. There may be a technical problem with your file or the server may be slow. If this happens, contact Moodle Support . Late submissions will be capped. Changes to files are allowed up until the due date.

If you have mitigating circumstances/extensions then you may need to submit to the mitigating circumstances inbox. If you are submitting resits they will need to be submitted to a resit inbox to the same module in the year you studied on the module.

Its important that you format your work correctly so that it is readable , professional and can be processed by Turnitin.

You should check if your School has specific formatting requirements such as font size, margin, size, line spacing. If there are no specific instructions about formatting or presentation, you should submit your work with the following:

  • Create your written assignment using Microsoft products where possible e.g Microsoft Word, PowerPoint but other supported file types are listed here.  (When you are using other software applications to produce your written file, you can go to Save as… > PDF to convert the file to a PDF, which is compatible with Turnitin).
  • Use a clear, readable, standard common font type. If you use downloaded fonts, you may encounter an error when you submit to Turnitin or issues with formatting. Suggested fonts are: – Arial – Calibri – Helvetica – Times New Roman – Verdana
  • Use black text on a white background.
  • Use 11 or 12 point font for the body of your assessment.
  • Insert graphics, photos or charts as images that are in either png or jpeg format.
  • Avoid using text boxes and WordArt in Microsoft Office applications.
  • If you are copying and pasting text into your document from another source (e.g. a website), paste text into your file as ‘plain text’ to remove any hidden code.
  • Ensure your document contains at least 20 words
  • Ensure your document does not exceed the 100 MB maximum allowed size
  • Use the referencing system recommended by your department (for clear and accurate guidance, see the Library Guidance Site )

2. For your first submission only , you must accept the Turnitin user agreement to be able to submit. Click the banner at the top of the assignment to read through the agreement and click ‘ I agree’ .

3. Usually you will be required to submit one file but some inboxes may be set up to accept multiple files (or parts as it is referred to in Turnitin). If multiple parts have been set up then each part needs to be submitted separately by clicking on the separate tabs.

4. Check the separate dates set for the inbox:

  •  Start date : you can’t submit before this time
  •  Due date : the deadline for your assignment. Late submissions or those with mitigating circumstances will need to submitted to the mitigating circumstances assignment link
  •  Post date : when your grades and feedback are due to be released

5. Click Submit Paper to make a submission. If you don’t see the submit paper icon, this guide will help you.

6. To submit a file ensure Submission Type is set to File Upload. To submit plain text only, select the option from the drop-down menu.

7. Enter your Submission Title . Don’t include your name or student number.

8. Upload your file into the File to Submit box, either by the file upload or drag-and-drop method

Simply drag and drop the file from the file manager into the box and wait for it to upload.

  • Open the file explorer/manager on your computer to find your file
  • Resize the explorer window, so that you can view the assignment submission page
  • Select and hold on the file for submission and drag it into the file submissions box
  • Drop your file onto into the box by releasing the selection
  • Once uploaded the file will display in the File to Submit box
  • Click the Add button
  • To upload from your computer, click Upload this file and click Browse to locate your file.
  • Follow our guide if you wish to upload from Google Drive or Dropbox
  • Click Upload this file.
  • The file picker will close and you will see an icon of the file appear.

9. Tick the student declaration box

10. Click Add Submission – A page will appear informing you that your submission is in progress.

11. A screen displaying your Digital receipt will then appear.

12. Click outside the digital receipt window to close it. Your submission will now appear in the My Submissions  page.

  •  You can review your submission by clicking the title
  •  A Paper ID number and the date and time of submission will display
  •  On most Turnitin inboxes a similarity report will be available.  The similarity report can be used to help you check whether you have correctly added citations and references in your work. The similarity report may take a short while to process following submission and when it is ready, your similarity score will show on the page and you can click on it to review your paper. Papers showing ‘Pending’ similarity reports after the due date will not be considered late if the paper was uploaded on time. Please note, similarity reports for the FIRST THREE submissions to a Turnitin inbox will normally generate within 5-15 minutes. Further submissions will generate similarity reports after 24 hours. 13. After submitting to a Turnitin Assignment inbox, you will automatically receive a digital receipt email to your Roehampton email account, confirming a successful submission. Find more information about the digital receipt .

Resolving submission errors

If your file upload has not worked, you will most likely see one of these common error messages on the submission page:

  •   You must upload a supported file type for this assignment
  •   Your submission exceeds the 100 MB maximum allowed size
  •   Your submission must contain 20 words or more (or 100 characters or more)

For any other error messages please check the following:

  •  Remove punctuations in the file name and keep it under 40 characters
  •  Remove headers and footers in your file
  •  Sometimes, simply changing the file name and resubmitting can help
  •  In some cases saving Powerpoint and Word files with images and tables as PDF’s can help .

If you are unable to resolve the issue please contact the Moodle Support for assistance.

To resubmit, click the  submit paper  icon and go through the same steps. Normally you can resubmit as many times as you like until the deadline.

Please note that similarity reports for resubmissions will take 24 hours to generate if you have already submitted your work to the inbox three times.

If you choose to have your students register independently they will have to create a user profile using the link provided on our homepage. You will need to provide them with the class ID and the enrollment password so that they can join your class. If your students are not able to use valid e-mail addresses for registration purposes, please have them create a user profile using a fake e-mail address. To avoid accidentally using a real e-mail address belonging to someone else, make sure you choose a domain that you know does not exist. Do not use real email domains such as yahoo or hotmail. For example, [email protected] is good because there is no such domain your-school.Turnitincom. Make sure students remember the email address they used to create an account with so they can sign on in the future.

Please note that students using fake email addresses cannot be sent any information through email, including digital receipts and emailed links to reset their passwords. Students can submit papers; they will also have the opportunity to print their digital receipts after they submit their paper.

Once you have added a student to your list, our system will send the student an e-mail with a temporary password. All students that you add will be able to log in to an established account and will not need any further assistance from you. Please note that emails may be filtered as spam, so have your students check their spam/bulk mail folders as well.

It is important to remember that if a student has used Turnitin in the past, our system will not generate a temporary password for him or her. Rather, the student should proceed to login with his or her existing login. Forgotten passwords may be reset using the "password help" link on our homepage.

  • Log in to your Turnitin account.
  • Once you are logged in, select "user type" from the red navigation bar at the top of the screen.
  • Choose your user type accordingly and click "submit".

You can also set your default user type to "instructor" so that you will always log in as an instructor.

  • Once you are logged in, select "user info" from the red navigation bar at the top of the screen.
  • Locate the pull down menu labeled "default user type." Choose instructor as your user type and click "submit".

If you have multiple user types, you will want to choose the user type you use most often as your default user type. You can then switch user types using the method outlined above.

  • Log in to your Turnitin account and enter your class by clicking on its title.
  • Select the "submit" icon to the right of the assignment you wish to submit to.
  • Use the pull-down menu labeled "submit a paper by" to choose your submission method.
  • If you are submitting a paper for a student who is already enrolled in your class, you may select his or her e-mail address using the pull-down menu labeled "author's user name". Complete the form and submit.

Upon submission you will receive a confirmation message. If you do not receive this confirmation message it is an indication that your paper has not been submitted properly.

  • Log in and enter the appropriate class by clicking on its title.
  • Click the "submit" icon to the right of your assignment title.
  • On the following page, use the pull-down menu labeled "submit a paper by" and select "cut & paste." Copy and paste your paper into your browser and click submit.
  • Use the pull-down menu labeled "submit a paper by:" and select "bulk upload". Attach as many files as desired and click "submit" to finish.

If you have already created an assignment you may allow for late submissions by clicking on your class and then clicking on the appropriate assignment title to get to the assignment options page. From this page follow the instructions above.

To create a revision assignment:

  • Log into your account.
  • Click the class name where the assignment is located.
  • Click the "create a new assignment" link.
  • On the assignment creation page, select "revision assignment" using the assignment pull-down at the top of the form.
  • Fill in the necessary information.
  • Click the "submit" button.
  • Click on a class name that contains the paper you wish to delete.
  • Click the inbox icon for the assignment under the inbox column.
  • You will see a list of submitted papers and the name of the authors.
  • Check the checkboxes to the left of the papers you wish to delete.
  • Click the delete button located above the author column.

To access your report, log in to your account and enter the appropriate class by clicking on its title. On the following page you will find the list of your assignments for this class. Click on the inbox icon to the right of the appropriate assignment title. After entering the inbox you will find Originality Report icons displayed to the right of each submission title.

  • Click on the green update button next to the name of the appropriate class.
  • Select "yes" from the pull-down menu for the question "Let students view their own Originality Reports for all paper assignments in this class?"

Repeat for other classes if needed.

If you have already created a Peer Review or have begun to use GradeMark without having designated a rubric set, you can select a rubric set for your assignment by following these steps:

  • From your class homepage, click on the title of your assignment that is being used for Peer Review or that contains papers you want to GradeMark.
  • Select a rubric set using the pulldown menu at the bottom of the assignment form. Click "submit" to save your changes.

The rubric set you selected will now be available for use with Peer Review and GradeMark. Please note that if you do not have any rubric sets available, you can create your own rubrics and rubric sets from your class library.

  • Go to your instructor homepage and locate the class you wish to deactivate.
  • Click on the green update button to the right of the class title.
  • Expire the class by setting its end date to a date that has passed. Click "submit" to save your changes.

Upon completing the steps above your class will disappear from your list of active classes and reappear on your list of expired classes. To access your list of expired classes, use the pull-down menu on your class homepage labeled "show".

You may also wish to look for and delete multiple enrollments of the same student by doing the following:

  • Sign in to their accounts.
  • Click on the class name.
  • Click on the "students" tab (upper left).
  • Click where it says "student name" above the list of student names to alphabetize the list.
  • Look for doubles in the newly alphabetized list.
  • Look at the dates next to the duplicate students' names.
  • Drop all duplicates of each student except the version with the latest date (drop by clicking on the little red box with an x at the end of each row).

When you convert a class to a master class, all students and assignments are pushed into the first section. TA's will have the same capabilities as instructors for the sections they are in charge of.

To convert a class to a master class, you must first log in. On the screen with the list of your classes, click on the green update button next to your class name. This will take you to an update form. Click on the box next to the question "convert to master class?"

Please note that students are not actually enrolled in the master class. They are each enrolled in a section, and must submit papers to their respective sections.

  • Log in to your account.
  • Click on your school's name.

The next screen has a list of all the Turnitin products and shows their status in your school's account.

Everything you need to know about late submissions.

There’s nothing worse than working really hard on a piece of coursework and accidentally missing the deadline, especially if you’re just a few minutes late. Universities have strict rules around coursework deadlines and turnitin submissions and if you do submit a piece of coursework late, you will have to deal with the penalties, which can be really scary if the coursework makes up a large part of your degree.

Whether you’ve actually submitted a piece of coursework late, or you just want to know what to expect in case you ever find yourself in that situation, here’s what you need to know about late submissions.

What’s the reason for the late submission?

Ok, so you’ve known about this piece of coursework for weeks but when it comes to the deadline, you’re late. There could be a few reasons why you’re submitting coursework late, and some of them are more acceptable than others.

Universities are pretty strict when it comes to deadlines, but let’s say there were genuine factors that prevented you from handing your work in on time. For example, your wifi cut out meaning you missed the deadline by a minute, or there was traffic on the way to hand in your coursework in person, or there’s been a genuine emergency involving you or a family member. These reasons are obviously, much more valid than you just simply woke up late, forgot the time, or hadn’t finished your coursework in time.

If you do have a genuine reason for late submission, you’re going to need some form of evidence to back up your claims and some lecturers may be more forgiving than others. In-person late submissions may be accepted, but turnitin normally shuts off from accepting submissions after the deadline, which could land you in trouble.

Lecturers have probably heard every excuse in the book when it comes to late coursework, but if you do have a genuine and valid reason it’s best to talk to them straight away to explain what happened. If you don’t have a genuine reason, you can still attempt to hand in your coursework late, but you will have to face the penalties.

In-person vs. online submission rules

The golden rule of coursework, check whether it needs to be submitted in person as well as online.

Unfortunately, if you submit your coursework online but fail to do it in person and visa versa, many universities will still consider this as a late submission and may automatically fail you. Some universities aren’t too bothered about in-person submissions anymore and only want you to do it online, whereas others want both a physical and digital copy. This is normally because the digital copy submitted on turnitin is scanned for plagiarism , and the physical copy may be marked and annotated and given back to you afterwards.

Online and in-person submissions may have different rules and be due at different times, so on submission day you’re going to want to make sure you’re prepared. If you do need to do a in-person submission, it’s probably best to print it out the day before (lecturers won’t care if you ran out of printing credits or the printers weren’t working) on the day, and to get to the submission desk bright and early to avoid oversleeping or traffic.

If you need to submit online, it’s best not to leave it until the last minute. You can normally submit coursework as soon as it’s done, so as soon as you’ve completed a piece and you’re happy with it, upload it before you forget. Yes, your wifi could genuinely cut out 30 seconds before the deadline, but your lecturers will just ask you why you left it until the last minute or didn’t go to the library to use the public and more reliable wifi there.

Triple check deadline dates and times

You might have multiple pieces of coursework due in the same week that all require physical and digital submissions, so the only way to make sure you’re sticking to deadlines is to triple check.

Unfortunately, it is easy to accidentally mess up the days or misread the time but as easy as it is, universities probably aren’t going to be very lenient if you miss a deadline purely because you thought it was due at 1pm and it was actually 12pm. Being a student is all about being accountable for yourself, and if you do mix up the deadline date it will be your own fault even if it is a super easy mistake. So, we can’t stress enough double and triple check your deadlines! Write them on post it notes on your wall, set timers on your phone an hour before, and don’t leave it until the last half an hour to try and get everything done.

Speak to your tutors or university

If you do submit a piece of coursework late, the first thing you need to do is email your tutors or go and speak to them in person. If you’re too late to submit via turnitin, you need to email them as soon as possible to let them know what’s happened and with a copy of your work in case they’re willing to accept it late and they will be able to advise on next steps.

Sometimes, genuine emergencies can come up last minute which are definitely more important than a coursework deadline. If on the day before, or the day of your submission something comes up, for example a family member is rushed to hospital, email your tutors as soon as possible before the deadline to let them know what’s happening and to ask for an extension. Your tutors are much more likely to be lenient about late submissions if you’ve already told them in advance that it’s going to be late.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with your coursework and don’t think you’ll make the deadline or are really struggling with your mental health, try and let them know a few days in advance and request a possible deadline. Your tutors want you to do well and if they know there’s something going on, they will be much more likely to grant an extension or hold off on penalties for late submission if you’ve given them a heads up in advance.

What’s the penalty for late submission?

Unfortunately, late submissions are treated quite seriously by universities. The penalty will depend on your university, your reason for late submission and by how late you were at submitting, eg. were you one minute late to your in-person hand in or are you 4 hours late? It’s best to check on your universities website to find out the exact penalties for late submission, but some universities will deduct marks.

Your work could be reduced by anywhere from 5-10%, or if you’re really late capped at the pass mark, so you won’t receive a grade higher than 40. You might also fail the whole module. Penalties and mark deductions are normally based on how late you submitted your work, so if you leave it a few days you’re much more likely to have your work capped at a pass mark, but if you’re only a few minutes behind your mark might just be reduced by 5%. This is why it’s best to let your tutors know as soon as possible that you need an extension or that your coursework is going to be late, as the longer you leave it to submit the more severe the penalty will be.

Your tutors and Students’ Union should be able to help you out and offer advice on what to do based on your personal circumstances if you do submit a piece of coursework late.
