For health or personal reasons, you may need to take a leave of absence from school. Whether this is planned or unplanned, it’s important to fill out any necessary paperwork and include a letter explaining your leave request. It’s also possible you may need to create a leave request for a child. By filling out a leave application, crafting the content of your letter, and formatting your leave letter, you can ensure the leave request is approved promptly.

Filling Out a Leave Application

Step 1 Contact the school registrar to secure a leave of absence form.

  • Note that your academic standing may affect your ability to take leave.

Step 3 Find out any visa implications.

  • Some student visas may only allow for so many entries and exits into your country of study. If you plan on going back to your home country for your leave or taking an extended break, this may be an issue.
  • Your school can help you work with your local consulate to renew your visa as necessary.

Step 4 Determine if your financial aid eligibility will be affected.

  • Financial aid eligibility is often unaffected for leaves of 90 days or fewer. This varies from university to university. Talk with a school guidance counselor about strategies to take leave while retaining your aid eligibility.

Step 5 Submit a leave letter with the application.

  • A leave letter helps the recipient understand fully why you need a leave request granted. It will help ensure your request is approved.

Step 6 Proofread your letter and double check that the application is complete.

  • Checking your work is especially important if you are feeling unwell.

Crafting the Content of Your Letter

Step 1 Say what grade and class you are in.

  • For example, “With due respect, I am a 12th grade student in Mrs. Williams’ homeroom.” Or “I’m a part-time sophomore living in Fox Hall.”
  • If you are a parent writing on behalf of a student, introduce yourself and your relationship. You might say, “I’m writing on behalf of my daughter, Molly Walsh, a 4th grade student in Mr. Belden’s class.”

Step 2 Explain the reason you needs leave and for how long.

  • For example, “Due to some recently discovered kidney stones, I will need surgery this month. My doctor recommends that I miss class for 3 days, from September 9-11, to have this procedure and recover.
  • For example, “Following the recent death of my mother, I respectfully request one month bereavement leave from school, from September 10 to October 10.”
  • If you are a parent writing on behalf of a child, you might say, “Due to a stomach virus, I am respectfully requesting that Molly be allowed to recover at home for the next two days, September 10 and 11.”

Step 3 Know that mental health is a valid reason to take leave.

  • For example, you might say, “My declining mental health is disrupting my ability to participate in academic and campus life. I am respectfully requesting 1 month of leave, from September 8 to October 8, to address my depression in therapy at home.”
  • If you are a parent writing on behalf of a student, you might say, “James is currently experiencing a mental health crisis and is not able to access needed services on campus. I am respectfully requesting 60 days of medical leave on his behalf, from October 17 to December 16, to receive treatment at an in-patient facility.”

Step 4 Ask to be granted leave.

  • For example, “Therefore, I ask for you to please consider my leave request as outlined above. I am enclosing a letter from my doctor for your reference.”
  • If you are a parent writing on behalf of your child with a mental illness, you might say, “I kindly ask for you to consider this leave request due to these extenuating circumstances. I am enclosing a note from our family psychiatrist for your reference.”

Step 5 Enclose any relevant supporting materials.

  • Ask your doctor or mental health professional to write a statement for you to attach.

Formatting a Leave Letter

Step 1 Date the letter.

  • For example: “September 2, 2017.”

Step 2 Include your mailing address in the top right corner.

  • For example: “Ms. Violet Jones 25 Maxine Street Chicago, IL 60661.”
  • It can be helpful to include a phone number or email address where you can be reached.
  • If you are a parent writing on behalf of a younger student, write your name rather than the student’s name.

Step 3 Type the principal’s address.

  • If you are at a university rather than a middle or high school, ask the registrar to whom your letter should be address. It will likely be an administrator or department head rather than the school president.
  • For example: “Principal David Smith George Washington High School 800 River Road Cleveland, Ohio 44106”

Step 4 Create a short subject line that makes the leave request obvious.

  • For example, “Subject: School Leave Request for Violet Jones.”

Step 5 Use a respectful, formal salutation to open your letter.

  • “Madam Headmistress,” or “Respected Sir,” for example.

Step 6 Make the letter succinct.

To apply for leave from school, you will typically need to submit a written request to your principal or other school administrator.

This request should include the dates of the leave, the reason for the leave, and any other relevant information, such as whether you will be able to complete your assignments while you are away. In some cases, you may also need to provide documentation, such as a doctor's note, to support your request for leave.

It is generally a good idea to apply for leave as far in advance as possible, to allow the school time to make any necessary arrangements. The specific timing will depend on the policies of your school and the reason for the leave. For example, if you are requesting leave due to a medical emergency, you may need to apply on shorter notice.

The decision to approve or deny a request for leave is ultimately up to the school administration.

Factors that may be considered include the length of the leave, the reason for the leave, and the potential impact on the student's academic progress.

In some cases, the school may require the student to make up missed work or may have other requirements in order to grant the leave.

If your request for leave is denied, you may have the option to appeal the decision. The process for appealing a decision will vary depending on the policies of your school and the reason for the denial. It may be helpful to speak with a school administrator or guidance counselor to discuss your options.

It is generally acceptable to request leave for the purpose of traveling or vacationing, as long as the request is made in advance and the dates of the leave do not conflict with important school events or exams. However, the school may have specific policies in place regarding the timing and length of such leaves, and may require the student to make up missed work upon their return.

Taking a leave of absence may affect your academic standing or eligibility for extracurricular activities, depending on the length of the leave and the school's policies. It is important to discuss any potential impacts with the school administration before making a request for leave, and to follow any specific requirements for making up missed work or staying current with coursework.

In some cases, the school may require documentation to support a request for leave.

This could include a doctor's note if the leave is due to illness, or other documentation such as a letter from an employer or a court order if the leave is related to a personal or family emergency.

It is important to provide any requested documentation in a timely manner, as this can help to support your request and ensure that it is processed smoothly.

In some cases, it may be possible to request a leave of absence for the purpose of taking online classes or pursuing other educational opportunities.

The school may have specific policies in place regarding the timing and length of such leaves, and may require the student to make up missed work or meet other requirements upon their return.

It is important to discuss the request with the school administration in advance, and to provide any necessary documentation to support the request.

If you need to extend your leave of absence after it has already been approved, it is important to communicate the situation to the school as soon as possible.

The school may be able to grant an extension, but may also have specific requirements in place for making up missed work or staying current with coursework.

It is important to follow any specific procedures for requesting an extension and to provide any necessary documentation to support the request.

application letter to leave the school

A leave letter for school, also known as a leave application for school, is a formal document used by students to request a temporary absence from their educational institution. Such letters are typically addressed to the school principal and follow a specific format to ensure clarity and professionalism. Writing a leave letter is an essential skill for students and should be done with care and respect.

The principal application for leave should include the following key components: the sender's name and contact details, the date of writing, the recipient's name and designation, a polite salutation, a clear and concise reason for requesting leave, the dates of the leave period, and a closing statement expressing gratitude and respect.

When crafting a leave letter, students must follow a formal letter format. It should start with their address, date, and then the school's address. A respectful salutation should be used, such as "Respected Principal," followed by a brief and honest explanation for the leave. This could be due to illness, a family emergency, or any other valid reason.

If the leave is for only one day, a one-day leave application for school should be written, specifying the date in question. Students should be sure to express their commitment to catching up on missed lessons and assignments upon their return.

In some cases, students may need to request a school leaving certificate. To do so, they should write an application for a school leaving certificate, stating their reason for leaving and the date on which they intend to do so. It's essential to be respectful and appreciative when making this request.

Leave Letter Format

Leave letters are a type of formal letter, and they follow the same format as other formal letters. When writing a leave letter in English, it's important to use formal and professional language.

Start with the receiver's address, as it's usually delivered directly to the concerned person.

Mention the date to show when you wrote the letter.

Next, include a precise subject line.

Use a respectful greeting or salutation.

In the body of the letter, clearly state the reason for your leave and the duration of your absence.

Maintain a neutral and professional tone throughout the letter.

Be concise and avoid long, confusing sentences.

Before submitting the letter, proofread it and correct any spelling or grammar mistakes.

Attach any necessary documents, such as medical certificates or on-duty certificates.

In addition, we will talk about some special considerations when asking or requesting a leave of absence from school and how to avoid incurring in a penalty.

Application for leave of absence from school by parents

Parents sometimes know them excuse letters and write them, usually directed to the class teacher or the principal when there are exceptional circumstances such as a death in the family or if their child is sick (e.g. fever or stomach bug) and need to notify the school so there won’t be an unauthorized absence that can be detrimental to a student’s academic performance.

All schools must comply and follow the education regulations where Head Teachers can’t authorize leave for holidays, and they may grant leave of absence if exceptional circumstances apply.

Here is an example from Rugby Free Primary School “The Supreme Court recently reached a decision in the case of Platt v Isle of Wight Council which has clarified the law on unauthorized leave, including holidays, during term time. The parents of children of compulsory school age are required to ensure that they attend school on a regular basis. The Supreme Court has made clear that attending school ‘regularly’ means that the children must attend school on every day that they are required to do so. As such, the parents of any child who are absent from school without authorization for any length of time are likely to be considered as committing an offence under s444 of the Education Act 1996.”

Reasons why the application won’t be granted

As mentioned, schools need to comply with the current laws established so here are some reasons why the application will not be granted:

Keep an eye on your inbox: 25 million student loan borrowers to get email on forgiveness

Keep a sharp eye on your email inbox in the coming days and weeks, student loan borrowers. Buried amongst the spam mail and coupons may be the latest information on debt forgiveness.

The Biden administration has taken its next steps toward a solution for borrowers after his initial forgiveness plan was struck down in the Supreme Court in June 2023. The new initiative could provide relief for millions of Americans and even total cancelation of repayment for some.

Originally announced back in April, the White House said that , if implemented as proposed, the plan "would bring the total number of borrowers getting relief under the Biden-Harris Administration to more than 30 million."

Now, roughly 25 million borrowers are expected to receive emails with the next steps starting this week, the U.S. Department of Education announced on Wednesday.

“Starting tomorrow, the U.S. Department of Education will begin emailing all borrowers with at least one outstanding federally held student loan to provide updates on potential student debt relief,” the department said in an announcement.

The emails will also provide information on how to opt out if they do not want to receive relief. People looking to opt out will have until Aug. 30 to contact their loan servicer and will not be able to opt back in, according to the department. They will also be temporarily opted out of forgiveness due to enrollment in income-driven repayment plans until the department can automatically assess their eligibility for further benefits.

Eligible Americans will receive a follow-up email with additional information after the rules of eligibility and forgiveness are finalized in the fall.

"The rules that would provide this relief are not yet finalized, and the email does not guarantee specific borrowers will be eligible," the announcement also warned.

Student loan forgiveness: What Kamala Harris has said (and done) about student loans during her career

How will be eligible for relief?

Under the rules drafted in April, the Biden administration named four specific classes of borrowers who would be eligible for relief under the proposed plan. These include:

◾ Borrowers who owe more now than they did at the start of repayment.  Borrowers would be eligible for relief if they have a current balance on certain types of Federal student loans that is greater than the balance of that loan when it entered repayment due to runaway interest. The Department of Education estimates that this debt relief would impact nearly 23 million borrowers, the majority of whom are Pell Grant recipients.

◾ Borrowers who have been in repayment for decades.  If a borrower with only undergraduate loans has been in repayment for more than 20 years (received on or before July 1, 2005), they would be eligible for this relief. Borrowers with at least one graduate loan who have been in repayment for more than 25 years (received on or before July 1, 2000) would also be eligible.

◾ Borrowers who are otherwise eligible for loan forgiveness but have not yet applied.  If a borrower hasn’t successfully enrolled in an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan but would be eligible for immediate forgiveness, they would be eligible for relief. Borrowers who would be eligible for closed school discharge or other types of forgiveness opportunities but haven’t successfully applied would also be eligible for this relief.

◾ Borrowers who enrolled in low-financial value programs . If a borrower attended an institution that failed to provide sufficient financial value, or that failed one of the Department of Education's accountability standards for institutions, those borrowers would also be eligible for debt relief.

“No application will be needed for borrowers to receive this relief if these plans are implemented as proposed,” said the announcement.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement that the current administration made a commitment to deliver relief to followers and the department nearing the "end of the lengthy rulemaking process," leading them "one step closer to keeping that promise.”

“Today, the Biden-Harris administration takes another step forward in our drive to deliver student debt relief to borrowers who’ve been failed by a broken system,” he said. “These latest steps will mark the next milestone in our efforts to help millions of borrowers who’ve been buried under a mountain of student loan interest, or who took on debt to pay for college programs that left them worse off financially, those who have been paying their loans for twenty or more years, and many others."

Best Teacher Intro Letter to Parents – with Examples

July 30, 2024

As many teachers know, a successful school year involves clear communication between teachers and their students’ parents and guardians. To open communication from the very start, there is the teacher introduction letters to parents, letting them know a bit about what to expect. In general, these letters introduce the teachers and provide basic information on how the parents can best engage with the learning experience. They can range in length and tone, from serious, to sincere, to silly. The tone often depends on the grade level, since an overly serious preschool intro letter or a cutesy high school letter may feel out of place. Continue reading for some tips on what to include in your intro letters to parents, as well as examples by grade level (plus an example of an intro letter from a student teacher).

Tips for Writing a Teacher Intro Letter to Parents

Before we get started with examples, here are some tips for writing your intro letter to parents. While you don’t always need all of these elements, they can be great starting points for structuring your letter.

1)  Address parents and caregivers

It can be thoughtful to address parents and caregivers directly, even if much of your letter is copied and pasted between families. For example, you might begin with “Dear Brown Family,” “Dear Parents of Sofia Miller,” or “Dear Mr. and Ms. Garcia-Jones.” You can also address all families together, for example, “Dear 7 th Grade Families.”

2)    Introduce yourself

This is perhaps the most important part of the letter (it’s an “intro letter” after all). Introducing yourself turns you from an abstract teacher figure to a relatable human being from the perspective of the families. It doesn’t hurt to add a few “fun facts” to the mix (where you’re from, your favorite color, things you like to do in your free time, etc.) in order to communicate your warmth and unique personality.

Teacher Intro Letter to Parents (Continued)

3)  describe your background and experience.

The purpose of including your experience is to gain the trust of parents and guardians receiving your letter. It can include how long you’ve taught, where you earned your degree, and any other relevant experience. For example, if you are a 5th grade music teacher, you might say, “I became certified as a music instructor after 7 years of playing in a professional orchestra, and I’ve been teaching children the basics of string instruments since 2015. I also help to run the Hamilton County Orchestra Camp each summer.”

4)  Include a bit of your teaching philosophy

This does not need to be a long statement, but a few sentences about how you run your classroom. What beliefs about education guide your teaching? In addition to course material, how do you create a healthy learning environment? Check out this University of San Diego resource for teaching philosophy prompts to pull from).

Teacher Introduction Letter to Parents (Continued)

5)    guide how parents and caregivers should participate.

How much should parents participate? While some teachers expect parents and guardians to be active participants in their students’ education (particularly teachers of younger grade levels), other teachers prefer if parents only involve themselves when necessary. Make sure it’s clear how you expect parents to support your students. Should they provide homework help? Chaperone field trips? Let you know when difficulties arise? Communicating your expectations helps parents and caretakers best support your students, and it lowers the likelihood of conflict or misunderstanding later on.

6)    Share your contact information

When it’s necessary for parents to get in touch, make sure they know how to reach you. Provide an email and/or phone number, and let them know how to schedule a private conference or phone call if needed.

7)    Show enthusiasm

Throughout the letter, it’s important to show your excitement about teaching your students. Even a simple “I’m excited to get to know this new class and begin the year” to can leave parents and caregivers feeling confident that their students are in good hands.

Example 1: Teacher Introduction Letter to Parents of Preschool Students

Dear families of Ms. Lee’s pre-K students,

Welcome to Pre-K, a year for your young learners to shine as they make the leap from preschool to kindergarten. I believe that pre-K students can blossom when offered a balance of challenge and play, and I’ve prepared a year full of lovely learning, cheerful challenges, amazing adventures, and glistening growth for your student. I can’t wait to meet this new class and letting the excitement begin.

Communication is key when it comes to teaching students of this age, and I hope to foster an open and honest parent/teacher relationship. I will communicate with you each week by sending home a communication folder with updates on Friday, which your students can return to the classroom on Monday. You can also email me any time at ___________ if you have any questions or concerns. I am happy to set up individual meetings over email.

Lastly, here’s a bit about me:

  • My name is Erica Lee
  • My favorite color is red.
  • My favorite food is ravioli.
  • My favorite season is fall.
  • One day, I want to hike in the mountains of Colorado.

If you wouldn’t mind emailing me back with your student’s answers to these questions, I will prepare special name cards for the first day of school. Feel free to include any other information you’d like to share and questions you’d like to ask.

  • My name is:
  • My favorite color is:
  • My favorite food is:
  • My favorite season is:
  • One day, I want to:

Until next week!

Example 2: Teacher Introduction Letter to Parents of Elementary School Students

Dear Mr. Brown and Dr. Anderson,

As his homeroom teacher, it is my pleasure to welcome Drew to 4th grade for an exciting year of learning. I’m Ms. Katz and I teach 4th grade social studies. I began teaching because of my love for learning about historical civilizations and most importantly, the joy I receive from working with elementary school students.

In addition to teaching about world cultures, religions, and governments, each year I look forward to creating a warm and welcoming home-base for my homeroom students. I believe that this “home-base” should extend to families as well.

To start the year of right, I’m pleased to welcome you and Drew to our 4th Grade Open House (August 25th, 5-7 PM), an evening for students, guardians, and teachers to gather and learn a bit about each other before the school year begins. On this day, I will share a bit about the curriculum and homework expectations, as well as events and fieldtrips throughout the year. You are welcome to bring Drew’s school supplies to this event if it would be helpful for reducing the first-day-of-school hassle.

If you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, you can contact me at ______________. I check my emails on a daily basis, and I will respond to you within 24 hours.

I look forward to meeting you and Drew in a just a few short weeks!

Example 3: Teacher Introduction Letter to Parents of Middle School Students

Dear 6th Grade Families,

Welcome to middle school! I am Mx. Davis, your student’s homeroom teacher and math instructor for the year. A bit about me: I’ve been teaching at Newtown Middle School for 10 years. I graduated from Penn State University in 09’ with a Bachelor’s in Physics, and continued on to pursue my Master’s in Education with a specialization in Mathematics Education. When I’m not teaching, I love cooking, watching stand-up comedy, and playing piano.

I look forward to getting to know this new group of young mathematicians. Though middle school can be a stressful time for many students and families, I want to assure you that I will work to foster a welcoming community for your students. I take great care to emphasize kindness and inclusion while teaching middle school students.

In my 10 years of teaching, I’ve found that each student learns differently. Nobody is “bad at math” in my class, and I recognize and respect individual learning styles of my students. That said, I also ask that parents and guardians help to make sure that students complete their weekly homework assignments, which will be assigned each Tuesday and Thursday. While you should not need to help them with the math itself, I recommend setting aside 30-60 minutes for daily math practice at home. I am also open to meeting about any special needs throughout the school year (as is our excellent school guidance counselor, Mrs. Williams). Please email me with any questions or concerns.

I will also be at the Newtown Middle School welcome night for new families (August 18th, 7-9pm), and I hope to meet you there!

With great excitement,

Example 4: Teacher Introduction Letter to Parents of High School Students

Buongiorno e benvenuti!

My name is Signor Rossi, and I teach introductory and intermediate Italian at Riverview High School. I grew up outside of Rome, and I’ve been teaching Italian in the United States for over 20 years.

As you might know, we have a unique language program here at Riverview, with special opportunities to take languages not always offered (including Italian, of course). In addition to practicing written and conversational skills, I believe it’s important that students learn about Italian culture, from opera, to literature, to cooking.

In this class, we only speak Italian. When it comes to language learning, practice makes perfect, and mistakes lead to greater understanding. Because of this, I ask my students not to use online tools such as Google Translate and ChatGPT for Italian learning, unless specified in an assignment. Though I hold my students accountable for their own homework assignments, I request that, when possible, you also discourage them from using these tools at home.

As all students will soon be informed, I will hold office hours every Wednesday and Thursday from 3-4:30 PM, as well as lunchtime Italian conversation practice on Fridays. I’m also happy to be in touch with parents regarding any concerns. I hope that we will meet at the school-wide Riverview Family Open House on September 14th, as well as parent-teacher conferences on October 21 st . In the meantime, don’t hesitate to email me at ____________.

As we say in Italy, “non vedo l’ora” (I can’t wait) to begin the year.

Signor Rossi

Example 5: Teacher Introduction Letter to Parents from a Student Teacher

Dear 2nd Grade Parents and Guardians,

My name is Alexis Jackson, and I’m thrilled to be a student teacher in your child’s classroom, where I will be working closely with Mrs. Martin. Since I will be seeing your child daily over these next four months, I wanted to tell you a bit about myself.

I’m a Master of Science in Education student at Johns Hopkins University, with focus on elementary education, special education, and reading. I’m a Maryland local, having graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County three years ago. It wasn’t long before I realized that I had a passion for elementary education and decided to pursue my Master’s degree. In my free time, I enjoy riding my bicycle, watching films, and volunteering at a local animal shelter.

I look forward to helping your children learn as I learn how to become an excellent teacher. I can already tell that this will be an amazing group of students. If you have any questions, you can direct them to my graduate school email address, __________, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

PhD Letter of Intent Template

Updated August 2, 2024 Written by Yassin Qanbar | Reviewed by Susan Chai, Esq.

A PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) Letter of Intent , also known as a Statement of Purpose, is a pivotal document in your PhD application. It introduces you to the admissions committee, detailing your academic interests, career objectives, and motivations for pursuing a PhD in your chosen field. This letter is crucial in offering a comprehensive view of your qualifications and aspirations, helping the committee determine your fit for their program.

Research-oriented graduate programs, such as Master’s and PhD degrees, often require applicants to submit a letter of intent. This letter serves multiple purposes in the application process:

  • Alignment with Program Goals: Admissions committees use the letter to assess if your academic and career goals align with the program’s objectives and the expertise of its faculty.
  • Matching with Supervisors: The letter helps in pairing successful applicants with suitable supervisors whose research interests match yours.
  • Showcasing Fit: It demonstrates how well you fit within the program’s academic community and how your research interests complement the department’s strengths.
  • Highlighting Your Vision: Your letter provides an opportunity to outline your long-term vision and how the program will help you achieve your academic and professional aspirations.
  • Demonstrating Preparation: It shows that you have researched the program thoroughly and understand how it aligns with your research interests and career goals.

How to Apply for a PhD Program

  • Research Potential Advisors: Investigate faculty members whose research aligns with your interests. Review their profiles, publications, and current projects.

  • Faculty Expertise: Ensure the faculty has a strong background in your area of interest.
  • Research Facilities: Check the availability of necessary research facilities and resources.
  • Funding Opportunities: Investigate funding options such as scholarships, assistantships, and grants.
  • Program Curriculum and Academic Environment: Assess the curriculum and overall academic culture of the institution.

Step 3 – Prepare for Standardized Tests (if required) (12-18 Months Before Application Deadline)

  • Verify Test Requirements: Check if the programs you’re interested in require standardized tests like the GRE .
  • Test Preparation: Prepare thoroughly, focusing on sections relevant to your field.
  • Schedule Tests: Book your test well in advance to ensure your scores are available by application deadlines.

ETS offers free online GRE prep resources, including webinars, two practice exams, sample questions, and section guides.

Step 4 – Gather Required Documents (9-12 Months Before Application  Deadline)

  • Transcripts: Obtain official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended.
  • Letters of Recommendation : Request letters from professors or research supervisors who can vouch for your academic and research capabilities. Provide them with ample time and necessary information.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): Compile a detailed CV highlighting your academic achievements, research experience, publications, presentations, and relevant work experience.
  • Writing Samples: Include samples of your academic writing or publications to showcase your research and writing skills.
  • Draft Research Proposal: Outline your research interests and potential projects.

Step 5 – Write a PhD Letter of Intent (6-9 Months Before Application Deadline)

  • Decision and Acceptance: Await responses, prepare for possible waitlist scenarios, and finalize decisions.

1. Use Specific Metrics to Showcase Impact

When discussing your research and career goals, include specific metrics to illustrate the impact of your work. Instead of saying, “My research improved data processing efficiency,” say, “My research reduced data processing time by 35%, enabling faster data analysis and saving $50,000 annually.” This demonstrates a clear, quantifiable benefit of your work, making your contributions tangible and impressive to the admissions committee.

2. Highlight Interdisciplinary Knowledge

Emphasize any interdisciplinary knowledge or experience. For example, if your research combines computer science and biology, detail how this unique blend enhances your ability to tackle complex problems and contributes to the program’s diversity.

3. Cite Influential Works

Mention specific influential works or researchers that have inspired your proposed dissertation. This shows you are well-versed in the current literature and helps align your interests with those of potential supervisors.

4. Demonstrate Long-Term Vision

Articulate a long-term vision for your research and career beyond the Ph.D. Explain how your dissertation will lay the groundwork for future projects and how you plan to contribute to your field over the next 10-20 years.

5. Include Soft Skills

Don’t just focus on technical skills and achievements. Highlight soft skills such as leadership, communication, and teamwork, which are crucial for successful collaboration and project management in research.

6. Tailor to the Program’s Strengths

Customize your letter to reflect the specific strengths and resources of the program you are applying to. Mention particular labs, facilities, or faculty members whose work aligns with your interests and explain how these will support your research goals.

7. Align Your Thesis with Program Goals

Ensure that your proposed thesis aligns with the goals and research focus of the program. Explain how your research topic fits within the broader objectives of the department and contributes to ongoing projects or future initiatives. This demonstrates that you have thoughtfully considered how your work integrates with the program’s mission.

Grants and other types of financial aid for single parents.

application letter to leave the school

If you’re a single parent exploring your financial aid options for college, you might be on the hunt for grants that you’re eligible for. Since grants typically don’t need to be paid back, it’s a form of financial aid that’ll help reduce future financial hardship.

Of note, in addition to grants, single parents — like other students — also might have access to financial aid opportunities like work-study programs and scholarships they can take advantage of.

Let’s look at the various grants, scholarships, and other financial aid opportunities available to single parents.

How can a single parent pay for college?

For any student — including single moms or dads — a good first step to getting financial aid for college is to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ® ) . This application helps students qualify for aid like grants, scholarships, work-study programs, and federal student loans.

It’s important to remember that the only way to qualify for many types of aid is to file the FAFSA ® before the deadline and to ensure you list all the schools you’re planning to apply to on the application.

If you’re accepted by schools that you have applied to, they’ll send you aid award letters after you complete the FAFSA ® , which will outline what financial aid, if any, they’re making available to you. Aid offerings will vary from school to school.

If you still need more financial assistance after you’ve received award letters, you can apply for other types of aid to assist with your goal of attending college.

How much can a single parent get from FAFSA ® ?

How much you receive from FAFSA ® depends on your financial situation, including your income and assets, like how much is in your bank account. As a single parent filling out the application, one key thing to note is that you'll likely be able to include your children on the form as dependents, which could impact how much financial aid you’re offered.

Financial aid appeal letter for single parents

If you received financial aid award letters and the aid offered to you is not enough to help you afford college, in certain circumstances it might be worth submitting an aid appeal. A financial aid appeal could be beneficial if you’ve had a substantial change in your financial situation, such as having a baby or unforeseen medical bills since the tax year asked for on the FAFSA ® .

Filing for an aid appeal shows your school that your financial situation differs from what they see on the FAFSA ® and could help prove your case that you need more financial aid. has a different process for its aid appeals, but generally, you need to fill out a form and write a letter stating your circumstances and financial impacts.

Schools typically set aside money for students who file aid appeals. If you’re going to appeal your aid package, it’s best to do it as soon as possible, when those additional funds are more likely to be available.

Filing for an aid appeal doesn't guarantee more aid, but based on your individual situation it might be worth a shot.

Grants for single parents

As we highlighted above, grants are a valuable form of financial aid because, for the most part, they don’t need to be paid back. Here’s some of the grants that may be available for single parents, including single moms.

Pell Grants

Federal Pell Grants, a need-based grant provided by the federal government, is a type of aid that undergraduate students who demonstrate exceptional financial need may be awarded, including single parents. The maximum award for the 2024-25 academic year (July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025) is $7,395. The U.S. Department of Education announces the amount for the upcoming academic year every February.

Other grants for single parents

In addition to the Pell Grant, many grants are open to single parents nationwide. They’re offered at the state and federal levels, as well as through private organizations and companies.

The best way to find grants for single parents is to contact the financial aid office at your school and ask if they know of any specific grant opportunities for students like yourself. They should be able to provide a list of available grants.

State grants for single parents

Many states offer grants and other financial aid programs for single parents. A great way to find grants that fit your needs is to check your state’s website, or the state website of the area you’re going to school in and see what’s available.

Hardship grants for single parents

If you’re going through a financial hardship and need additional help paying for college, contact the financial aid office at your school. They should be able to help point you toward financial aid opportunities to help you.

Being a single parent who's also attending school can be tough, especially if you’re already facing financial issues. There may be hardship grants or assistance programs out there to help.

The financial aid office is there to help students access the aid they need to complete their college education. Don’t hesitate to utilize this resource if you’re in need of help.

Scholarships for single parents

Like grants, scholarships are generally funds you don’t have to pay back . Luckily, there’re many scholarships available to single parents.

Some scholarships are accessible outside of the FAFSA ® and require their own applications and qualifications (although you may be required to also fill out the FAFSA ® in addition to their unique applications). It’s vital to read through each scholarship application and ensure you meet the qualifications.

The best way to find scholarships is to do an online search through a trustworthy scholarship database, such as the U.S. Department of Labor's scholarship search tool. Beware of scams , and make sure as you search that you’re on the lookout for scholarships available in the years you’re looking to attend school.

Final thoughts

There're many opportunities for single moms and dads to get financial aid for college. While it often takes research and dedication to secure aid, several resources are available to help you through the process, including your school’s financial aid office and other counseling services. As a single parent, don’t be afraid to use these resources to help you get the aid you need.

application letter to leave the school

Blog The Education Hub

https://educationhub.blog.gov.uk/2024/07/26/how-to-claim-15-hours-free-childcare-code/

How to apply for 15 hours free childcare for parents of 9-month- olds

application letter to leave the school

Since April, eligible working parents of 2-year-olds have been able to access 15 hours of childcare support as part of the expansion of childcare in England.

This comes on top of the pre-existing offer for eligible working parents of 3- and 4-year-olds, who can access 30 hours of government-funded childcare by combining the universal 15 hours, which is available to all families, with a further 15-hour entitlement for working parents.

From  September 2024 , 15 hours of childcare support will be extended to eligible working parents with a child from age 9-months-old. Applications are now open – more on this below.

It's worth noting that some providers may charge for extra services, such as providing lunch and nappies in addition to the government funded childcare. Visit  childcarechoices.gov.uk  for further information.

We recommend that everyone who is seeking a childcare place for September 2024 and has not yet done so, speaks to their chosen provider and applies for a code as soon as possible.

It may be difficult at this stage to secure your first-place provider. If you are struggling to find a place you should contact your local authority, who will be able to help source a local provider offering the entitlements.

When can I apply and how do I get my code?

Applications are open for eligible working parents whose children will be aged at least 9-months-old on or before 31 August, to receive 15 hours childcare starting from September.

This can be combined with the universal 15 hours to make 30 hours childcare when your child turns 3 or 4.

When you apply, you’ll receive a code to give to your childcare provider.

It’s important to remember that codes need to be renewed every three months . To do this, you’ll need to remember to login to your childcare account to check when your reconfirmation dates are, so that you can renew your code on time. If you don’t renew it on time, you will need to reapply.

You can claim your place the term after your child turns the relevant age. This gives local authorities and childcare providers enough time to prepare.

There is no limit on the number of codes available. However, if you’re applying for childcare to start in September 2024, we recommend that you reach out to your preferred provider now to check when they will need your code.

How do I apply?

You apply online here on  gov.uk  once you have checked our  eligibility criteria .

You’ll need to make sure you have the following information to hand before starting the application:

  • your national insurance number (or unique taxpayer reference if you are self-employed)
  • the date you started or are due to start work
  • details of any government support or benefits you receive
  • the UK birth certificate reference number (if you have one) for your child.

You may find out if you’re eligible straight away, but it can take up to 7 days.

Once your application has been approved, you’ll get a code to give to your childcare provider.

Eligible parents are also able to access Tax-Free Childcare through the same application system. You can apply for Tax-Free Childcare at any time. However, you don't need to apply for Tax-Free Childcare to be eligible to apply for the 15 hours childcare scheme.

Can I apply for government-funded childcare if I’m on parental leave?

Yes, you can.

If you’re applying for childcare for an older child, who is not the reason for your parental leave, you can continue to apply in the usual way.

For parents applying for funded childcare for the child who is the reason for your parental leave, you can apply for a childcare code at the same time as everyone else as long as you plan to return to work from parental leave or start a new job by the end of September 2024.

Parents on parental leave will need to apply online. They may be told their application is ‘pending’ if it is more than 31 days before they return to work, but they will still receive a letter in the post within 1 to 2 weeks so they can access their childcare entitlement.

Parents starting new work before 30 September can call HMRC on 0300 123 4097 to receive a code.

What if I’m on parental leave and returning to work after 1 October 2024?

Parents who plan to start or return to work between 1 October 2024 and 31 January 2025 will be able to apply for a code from 1 September 2024 to use from 1 January 2025.

After 1 October 2024, the following dates will apply:

1 October to 31 January 1 September to 31 December 1 January
1 February to 30 April 1 January to 31 March 1 April
1 May to 30 September 1 April to 31 August 1 September

It is important to remember that if you are applying for childcare for an older child, who is not the reason for your parental leave, you can apply regardless of your return-to-work date.

What happens once I receive my code?

Once you receive your code, you’ll need to take it to your childcare provider, along with your National Insurance number and your child’s date of birth.

Your childcare provider will process the code to provide your place.

Your local authority can provide support for finding a government-funded place in your area. You can find out who your local authority is here .

If I receive a code in a letter from HMRC, does this make my code on my Childcare Account invalid?

No. Both codes will be valid.

If you have two codes, one from your letter beginning with 11 and one from the website beginning with 50, please give your provider the code from the website, as this is the permanent digital code for your child.

If you only have one code (beginning with 11) then you can use this code to start using your government-funded hours.

Please remember that once your reconfirmation window opens, you will still need to reconfirm your eligibility through your Childcare Account and share the digital code you receive with your provider.

Do I need to wait for my reconfirmation window to add another child to my account?

A parent who is already using the childcare service for another child can add a new child to their account at any time.

Your reconfirmation cycle for your current Tax-Free Childcare won’t affect this.

What happens if I’m using an entitlement for my 2-year-old when they become 3?

Parents are able to access the universal 15 hours childcare support from the term after the child’s third birthday through to when they start school.

If your child is accessing the 15 hours entitlement for 2-year-olds and you remain eligible, your child will automatically be moved onto 30 hours (universal 15 hours + 15 hours for working parents) from the term after your child turns 3.

You will just need to keep reconfirming your code as normal, and it will become usable to claim 30 hours.

You should also speak to your provider to let them know you intend to take up 30 hours.

If you are accessing disadvantaged entitlement childcare for, you will also able to access the universal entitlement from the term after your child turns 3.
