How did the International Women’s Day celebrations start?

The predecessor of International Women’s Day, previously known as National Women’s Day , was first observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, at the suggestion of activist Theresa Malkiel.

4. How did Women’s Day come into consideration?

International Women's Day originated from the efforts of labor organizations across North America and Europe at the start of the twentieth century. The Socialist Party of America established the inaugural National Woman's Day on February 28, 1909, in remembrance of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, during which Women protested against poor working conditions. On the final Sunday in February in 1917, Russian Women opted to protest and strike under the slogan "Bread and Peace" (which fell on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar). Their campaign eventually resulted in the implementation of Women's suffrage in Russia.

5. How was International Women’s Day adopted by the United Nations?

The United Nations Charter became the first International accord to recognize the ideal of gender equality in 1945. In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations commemorated the first official International Women's Day on March 8th. Two years later, in December 1977, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution declaring a United Nations Day for Women's Rights and International Peace, to be marked by the Member States on any day of the year in line with their historical and national traditions.

Photos: A look at International Women’s Day marches around the world

On International Women’s Day, women around the world celebrated by marching in more than 50 countries , taking off from work to make clear what “ A Day Without A Woman ” would look like and wearing red in solidarity. In New York, a bronze statue of a girl was installed to stare down the iconic  Wall Street Bull  over gender inequality.

The day was first observed in 1908  in New York City, where women marched for suffrage and workplace improvements. After several years of continuous demonstrations across the U.S. and Europe, March 8 was officially designated as International Women’s Day. The date is significant because it was the day a  women’s march in Pretograd , Russia led to the start of the Russian Revolution.

This year, the United Nations used the day to shine a light on the 2030 Agenda , an ambitious plan to ensure girls and boys have equal access to education, that discrimination and violence against women are halted, and that forced marriage and female genital mutilation end.

HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

The history of International Women’s Day (IWD), though comparatively short is as bold and brilliant as its founders themselves.

Long before the Feminist Movement of the 1960s, International Women’s Day’s genesis goes back to February 28, 1909,  New York, U.S.A., with a prophetic focus on women’s rights.

Known originally as “National Woman’s Day” it was first proposed by Theresa Malkiel and loosely based on the urban legend commemorating a protest by women garment workers in New York City, on March 8, 1857.

Inspired by Malkeil and other American activists, German Socialist Luise Zietz suggested there be an annual Women’s Day which was quickly seconded by sister activist, Clara Zetkin and supported by Kate Duncker.  One hundred women delegates from 17 countries agreed with the suggestion as a means to continue promoting the rights of women, including suffrage (the right to vote).

On March 19, 1911, International Women’s Day was officially marked for the first time.  More than one million people celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.  Women demanded the right to vote, to fight against sex discrimination in the workplace, and to hold public office.

In 1913, International Women’s Day was recognized in Russia for the first time, where it catapulted to become part of what led to the Russian Revolution in 1917. At that time, in St. Petersburg, women went on strike for “Bread and Peace” demanding the end to World War I, Czarism, and the shortage of food in Russia.

That day was March 8 (February 23 on the Gregorian calendar). Though ordered back to work the next day, workers walked out of factories leading to mass strikes and the abdication of Nicholas II just 7 days later, resulting in Russian women being given the right to vote.

In further recognition of the role Russian women played in defense of their Fatherland and their heroism and selflessness, International Women’s Day was declared a non-working holiday.

Initially celebrated in, and supported by, Communist countries and organizations, International Women’s Day began to spread. In 1922, it reached China where March 8th was declared an office “half-day of work” for women in 1949.

The demand for women’s rights continued to grow, gain support, and shine a much- needed light on the poor conditions under which too many women continued to live.

In 1967, the notion of women’s rights was taken up by the next generation of feminists who called for equal pay, equal economic opportunity, equal legal rights, reproductive rights, subsidized child care and the prevention of violence against women.

The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day in 1975, which was declared “International Women’s Year”. In 1977, the United Nations invited members to proclaim March 8th as the UN Day for Women’s Rights and World Peace .

             International Women’s Day continues to be celebrated worldwide on March 8th.

This International Women’s Day, 8 March 2023, join UN Women and the United Nations in celebrating under the theme DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality .

Women make up only 22 per cent of artificial intelligence workers globally.  

A global analysis of 133 AI systems across industries found that 44.2 per cent demonstrate gender bias.  

A survey of women journalists from 125 countries found that 73 per cent had suffered online violence in the course of their work.

From gender-responsive digital learning to tech-facilitated sexual and reproductive healthcare, the digital age represents an unprecedented opportunity to eliminate all forms of disparity and inequality.

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987. Women’s History Month 2024 will take place from Friday, March 1 - Sunday, March 31, 2024. 

Why Do We Celebrate Women’s History Month?

Women’s History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to U.S. history. From Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony , Sojourner Truth to Rosa Parks , the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States.

The actual celebration of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California , in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa.

A few years later, the idea caught on within communities, school districts and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.

International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day , a global celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women, took place for the first time on March 8, 1911. Many countries around the world celebrate the holiday with demonstrations, educational initiatives and customs such as presenting women with gifts and flowers. 

The United Nations has sponsored International Women’s Day since 1975. When adopting its resolution on the observance of International Women’s Day, the United Nations General Assembly cited the following reasons: “To recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.”

An event which started as a political affair has evolved over the years and is now celebrated by gifting flowers, greeting cards and gifts to women in most regions. International Women’s Day is also an official holiday in several countries like Belarus, Armenia, Albania, Brazil, and Cameroon. On this occasion, we should endeavor building a better world where men and women live harmoniously, free of violence and discrimination.”

4. Women a Full Circle!! A heart-warming Good morning to everybody present here, here we have all gathered to celebrate women’s day and to celebrate the achievement of women and the strength to fight with whatever comes in her way. Over the years the essence of women’s day celebration has evolved and has taken up an all together novel form. A woman in herself is a full circle and complete within herself she has inside her the potency to fight for whatever is right! Her strength, I would like to illustrate her statement with an anecdote. There was a warm egg in the nest of an eagle which was about to hatch, and then a farmer who lived nearby took out the egg and kept it with his hen’s eggs which were also about to hatch. After quite some time the gets hatched and they started following their mother and tried as much as to be the way their mother was. The point here to note is that that the baby eagle never knew that it was from eagle family. Though their mother had realised the eagle’s different behaviour but she never acknowledged it. One day the baby eagle saw an eagle flying powerfully high into the sky and it was amazed at the strength she was possessing and wished to be an eagle in the next birth so as to have such unwavering strength. The baby eagle never realised its strength for it always believed that it belonged to the hen’s family. The, gist of the story says that we women are the baby eagles born to an eagle’s family not knowing that we possess the same strength as that of the eagle’s family. Stop believing women, Start living; Living your life on your terms, it’s high time!!

6. Unite to Fight: The Cause of Women Empowerment! Hello everyone, I am feeling obliged to have got an opportunity to speak on this auspicious and encouraging day of the year. The first lesson that all of us learn start only at home and the rest follows with the kind of attitude we have got instilled in us. Inclusive support if we say, that includes each one of us including the men. We together can start with the empowerment right at home, you don’t need to learn a lesson for it. For instance we can encourage the ladies at our home, our mother, sisters, and wives to pursue their dreams and excel in their career. A wholehearted support, be it however trivial, will boost their self confidence and will have a transforming impact on the women’ way of life. They can only come out of the pathetic situations that we humans have created. Let’s fight it together!! Together we will over any big problem!!

Achieving gender equality and women’s well-being in all aspects of life is more crucial than ever if we want to create prosperous economies and a healthy planet. However, we are facing a key challenge: the alarming $360 billion annual deficit in gender-equality measures by 2030.

• Investing in women, a human rights issue: Time is running out. Gender equality is the greatest human rights challenge, benefiting everyone.

• Shifting to a green economy and care society: The current economic system disproportionately affects women. Advocates propose a shift to a green economy and care society to amplify women's voices.

Making investment in violence prevention a priority

The theme for UN Women's Day 2024 is aligned with the demands of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2023 : ending gender-based violence through adequate funding. Without ambitious investments to scale-up prevention programmes, implement effective policies, and provide support services to address violence against women and girls,  countries will fail to end gender-based violence by 2030 .

In Russia’s Far East, the Nanai community are adapting to new ways of life

Yakutia-based photographer, alexey pavlov, travels to the nanai district in khabarovsk krai to document how the native inhabitants of russia’s far east keep their culture alive..

Khabarovsk Krai in Russia’s Far East is best known for its nature. From orchids to tigers, the region boasts an amazing variety of flora and fauna. The banks of the Amur are also home to the indigenous Nanai population (the ethnonym translates simply as “people of this land”). In May 2019, I was lucky enough to visit the Nanai District for St Petersburg’s School of Modern Photography, Docdodoc , where I am currently studying.

Modern-day Nanais represent a complex historical community. They are the descendents of the Tungus, Turks, Mongols, and Machus who at different times settled in the Lower Amur basin. Since ancient times, the Nanai people have relied on fishing not only for sustenance but as a way of life. Today, pollution and overfishing has led to a decline of Amur salmon among other fish on the river. This has devastating repercussions for the livelihood of the Nanai people.

I arrived in Troitskoye, the district’s capital, which is easily accessible by bus from the regional centre of Khabarovsk. From Troitskoye, I visited the villages of Djari, Naikhin, Dayerga, and Dada. When I arrived in Troitskoye, it transpired that the only hotel there was almost full. Some workers at the Nanai Culture Centre, located in nearby Djari, kindly allowed me to stay in one of the rooms there, and even provided a fold-out bed and bedding, which I was very grateful for.

Before I set off, I looked at projects by photographers who have worked on similar themes, including Oleg Ponomarev, Tatiana Plotnikova, Ikuru Kuwajima, Oleg Klimov, Fyodor Telkov , and many others. I tried to read and watch as much as I could about the culture and traditions of the Nanais, the places they live, their modern lifestyle, but found there was little information readily available.

I was struck by was the optimism and hospitality of the Nanai people. Despite the fact that life in these small villages is very restricted, and fishing remains the main occupation, I did not meet a single person who voiced any complaints. Everywhere I went, I was treated as a dear guest.

Locals are worried that fish have become scarce over the last few years. many are outraged that this is happening as a result of exploitative fishing methods used by larger enterprises on the amur river.

The native language continues to be taught at schools, but, according to the people I spoke to, it is given no special priority and is taught “in the same way as other foreign languages”. Only some of the older generation speak their native language to a proficient degree, and nobody else speaks it in everyday life.

In spite of this, the Nanai community are passionate about preserving their culture. More than a dozen national ensembles work in the Nanaian villages: the work of the Nanaian masters of arts and crafts is truly diverse and known far beyond the borders of Russia.
