Waldorf and Presentation Teach Out

Waldorf University is pleased to announce a Teach Out agreement for Presentation College students. Presentation College students may complete their degree plans using Waldorf University’s on-campus or online courses in combination with the availability of independent study or consortium courses if the course is not available in time for graduation.

There are guarantees for Presentation College students in institutionally negotiated Teach-Out agreements that typically significantly exceed what transfer institutions provide directly to students. Therefore, it is often in the best interest of students to transition to a designated Teach-Out institution. The chart below outlines these provisions that advantage students.

Many of Waldorf University’s academic courses and programs are available both in person on the main campus in Forest City, Iowa and online. Waldorf University advisors will work with Presentation College students to review programs and delivery modality options available. 

Teach-Out Programs available include:

• Sport Management – on campus
• Business - on campus or Business Administration online
• Health Promotion and Exercise Science – on campus
• Psychology - on campus or online
• Criminal Justice - on campus and online – Criminal Justice Administration online
• Communications – on campus and online
• Not applicable

Teach-Out Program terms:

• For each student transitioning to Waldorf University from Presentation College, the applicable undergraduate or graduate net tuition to complete required courses for graduation will cost the same or less than what the student paid at Presentation College in their last year of enrollment, with an annual tuition rate increase of no more than 5% in all subsequent years.  Room/Board as well as Course/Program/Other fees beyond the tuition will be charged at the published undergraduate or graduate rate.
• With the exception of some requirements in Waldorf University’s professional preparation programs that result in certification or licensure, Waldorf University’s approach to individualized degree planning will allow Presentation College degree plans to be used more or less “as is” on Waldorf University’s degree plans.
• Waldorf University’s staff will make reasonable recommendations to Presentation College students regarding either on-campus housing (on a first come first-serve basis) or nearby off-campus housing.
• Waldorf University will commit athletics coaching and other staff time to work with Presentation College student athletes to describe the opportunities for Presentation College student athletes to join Waldorf University teams and offer personal consultations with students to determine athletic eligibility to compete in his/her respective sport. Student-athletes from Presentation College will be afforded the same opportunities to join Waldorf University athletic teams as any other new student.

Presentation College Teach-Out Details

Thank you for your interest in entering the Teach-Out agreement with Mount Marty University. We want to provide all necessary information for you to make an informed decision. The highlights of our Teach-out for transferring from Presentation College include meeting your total costs and  waiving the on-campus living requirement . Please read below carefully for other details. You can find our full Teach-Out agreement here .

Applying to Mount Marty:

• Submit admission application .
• Submit official Presentation College transcript. We will guarantee admission to all students transferring with a 2.0 Presentation GPA or higher.
• Submit official transcripts from all institutions where you earned college credit.
• Submit Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) & add Mount Marty.
• Please send your Presentation College awards statement to Britta True during your admission process.
• Review credit evaluation with Britta True , Assistant Director of Admission. This will determine how many credits you need to earn at Mount Marty before graduating.
• Review financial aid awards. Your direct costs at Mount Marty will be the same as your direct costs at Presentation College, with the understanding that Mount Marty can only award up to the cost of tuition, $30,250.  Please send your Presentation College awards statement to Britta True during your admission process.
• If you like the results of your transcript evaluation and financial aid awards, submit your enrollment agreement  on your student portal. We will waive the $100 enrollment fee .
• Decide on your housing. Campus housing is available at Mount Marty. We are waiving the on-campus living requirement for all Presentation students.  
• Sign up for class-registration appointment (you will receive an invitation via email after submitting the enrollment agreement).
• August 15: last day to apply to Mount Marty for fall 2023.
• August 30: first day of courses for fall semester.
• September 6: Last day to add/drop courses.

Mount Marty, NSU reach teach-out agreements with Presentation College

Students attending Presentation College now have more in-state options to continue their degrees after the Aberdeen school closes later this year.

Mount Marty University and Northern State University have both reached teach-out agreements with Presentation, according to a press release.

That means students can transfer between the institutions with minimal fees.

Initially, Presentation announced three teach-out partners – all out-of-state.

Dakota Wesleyan was named a partner last week. The addition of Mount Marty and NSU means Presentation students now have six options.

Mount Marty University Announces Teach-Out Agreement with Presentation College

Mount Marty University (MMU) announces a teach-out agreement with Presentation College (PC) to ensure students have a Catholic Benedictine option in South Dakota.

Last week, Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD, announced its plans to close at the end of the 2023 summer term.

“We at Mount Marty are sad to lose our longtime NAIA rival in sports and our Catholic sister institution in South Dakota,” said President Marc Long. “This agreement will ensure that Presentation students can easily transfer and feel welcome at our campus.”

A teach-out is an arrangement between two educational institutions to provide students with the opportunity to complete their course of study when one institution closes. Highlights of the agreement are:

• MMU will accept any currently enrolled Presentation College student with automatic admission and will meet the direct costs of PC students up to the cost of tuition, ensuring that net student/family contribution will be the same.
• The agreement will ensure that all academic credits receiving a grade of C- or higher will be accepted and will waive institutional credit requirements for Presentation College students.
• Presentation College students have the option of living on- or off-campus at MMU in Yankton.
• Presentation College student-athletes have the option to continue their sporting career at MMU.

Mount Marty and Presentation have a long history of working together.

“The Benedictine Sisters of Yankton and the Presentation Sisters of Aberdeen both came to the Dakota Territory in the late 1800s with the mission to serve early settlers through education and health care, founding what is now Avera Health and our institutions,” said President Long. “We are thankful to have the opportunity to continue that mission for these students at MMU.”

Presentation College students and their families are welcome to a reception at Minervas Restaurant in Aberdeen, Monday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. to visit with MMU representatives from Academics, Admission, Financial Aid, Student Success and Athletics. MMU is also offering one-to-one admission counseling sessions with students on PC’s campus Tuesday, Jan. 31.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University signed a teach-out agreement with Presentation College today to help students complete their degrees at Northern.

Northern has been working toward an academic agreement with PC for quite some time, prior to Presentation’s recent announcement. Now, Northern has received approval from the Higher Learning Commission to move forward with the agreement.

“Northern has always valued the mission of the Presentation Sisters and College and their significant role in the community and region,” said Northern President Neal Schnoor. “Northern is working with the college to support students in any way possible during this difficult time of transition.”

Northern will accept coursework from Presentation College for current students and students who have stopped out since 2013. Northern will provide personalized academic advising to help students complete their major programs and identify a mix of minors, certificates, and experiential learning opportunities to meet their professional goals.

Current Presentation students and those who have stopped out are invited to visit with Northern at the teach-out fair in Lantern Hall on PC’s campus from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, and Tuesday, Jan. 31. Representatives from Academics, Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Success Center, and Athletics will be in attendance at the teach-out fair to meet with Presentation College students.

Presentation President Paula Langteau said, “We’re so pleased to be partnering with Northern State University with this agreement. We know that having the ability to continue to take courses right here in Aberdeen will be a huge benefit for many of our students, and we’re grateful for the opportunity.”

The teach-out agreement applies to students in all majors at Presentation College except nursing and radiologic technology.

Northern will also assist Presentation students with orientation, housing, and invitations to student clubs and activities while connecting students with support from the Student Success Center, Career Services, Native American Circle Program, Multicultural Student Affairs, Tutoring, Counseling, and Accessibility Services.

On January 27, Northern State University announced a teach-out agreement with Presentation College to help current PC students complete their degrees at Northern.

Later that week, Northern held a teach-out fair on PC’s campus where Saints students browsed the options Northern has to offer in the agreement.

Lasting three hours on both days, Associate Provost, Dr. Erin Fouberg, claims that “quite a variety of Northern staff attended, folks from admissions, student success center, student affairs, faculty, deans, coaches, and professional advisors.”

Fouberg explains that when Presentation decided they needed to close, they had to work with their creditor, the Higher Learning Commission, to take measures allowing them to set up teach-out agreements with other colleges.

Northern had been working toward an academic agreement with PC for a considerable amount of time prior to Presentation’s announcement of closing. Northern has finally received approval from the Higher Learning Commission to move forward with the agreement.

Northern is the sixth school to join the chain of teach-out agreements with PC. Other universities participating in the agreement include Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell,, Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D., St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D. and Olivet College in Olivet, Mich.

A teach-out agreement is an official agreement between presidents of a closing institution and an active institution. The agreement states that if a student is unable to finish their degree at the school that is closing, they may attend the active school within the terms of the agreement in order to finish their degree with tuition rates that are equal to or lesser than the rates that the student had paid to their first university.

All credits are transferable to the active school. The active school – in this case, Northern – must agree to allow students to finish within the same time frame that they would have finished at their previous school.

The teach-out agreement with Northern applies to Presentation College students of all majors with the exception of nursing and radiologic technology.

Students wishing to continue their majors in nursing and radiologic technology have the option to attend St. Ambrose University’s state-of-the-art nursing program. This program is a natural fit with Presentation College as the two have worked together to create the Nano Nagle Online School of Nursing.

Northern claims that they will also assist Presentation students with orientation, housing and invitations to student clubs and activities while connecting students with support centers. This includes the Student Success Center, Career Services, Native American Circle Program, Multicultural Student Affairs, Tutoring, Counseling and Accessibility Services.

Fouberg states that Northern has taken extraordinary measures to ensure this agreement will be as positive as possible for Presentation students.

“This is not an agreement Northern is taking lightly. This is a commitment to Presentation College students that we will help them graduate from their desired program,” Fouberg says.

Northern will accept all credits from current Presentation College students, as well as any student who paused their degree through Presentation since 2013.

“Northern has always valued the mission of the Presentation Sisters and College, and their significant role in the community and region,” NSU President Dr. Neal Schnoor explains.

With the amount of support the community gives to Northern and to college students in general, Fouberg states that it is plausible that we will see a considerable   amount of student transfers next fall – with a good percentage of those being former PC students.

Community members have already offered one-time scholarships to students who choose to utilize the teach-out agreement by transferring to Northern.

PC President, Dr. Paula Langteau stated in a press release “Having the ability to continue to take courses right here in Aberdeen will be a huge benefit for many of our students, and we’re grateful for the opportunity.”

Presentation and Northern have had a strong relationship over the years, and with this agreement, they hope to continue that legacy.

“Northern has worked with Presentation for quite a while, states Schnoor. “These agreements are very detailed. You want to make sure you get it right so when you announce it, the students and everyone know that this is a solid plan to help us help them reach their goals.”

Northern is interested in keeping Presentation staff in Aberdeen as well. Schnoor recognizes that there is a lot of talent on staff at Presentation, and believes that for Aberdeen, it is critical to continue to utilize this talent in the region. Fouberg closes by stating Northern’s teach-out agreement with Presentation College is ”the right thing to do.”

DWU named as Teach-Out partner with Presentation College

MITCHELL – Dakota Wesleyan University has announced that it will enter into a Teach-Out agreement with Presentation College, becoming a South Dakota option for involved students. Presentation announced earlier this week that it will close operations at the end of the 2023 summer term.

A Teach-Out is an arrangement through which two educational institutions provide students with the opportunity to complete their course of study when one institution closes. Dakota Wesleyan will accept any currently enrolled Presentation student with automatic admission and no application fee. The agreement will ensure that all academic credits will be accepted and that students will be able to graduate on the same timeline. Additionally, new students to DWU who come from Presentation will be guaranteed comparable net tuition, ensuring that their net student/family contribution will be the same.

DWU President Dan Kittle was pleased with the agreement. “Although the closure of Presentation College is a difficult circumstance, as it would be for any institution, its faculty, staff and students, we at Dakota Wesleyan are positioned to assist students in any way we can. We are grateful to be selected for the Teach-Out and we will work with the students, their families and the supportive staff at Presentation to ensure that students’ transitions are as seamless and easy as possible.”

Publications, nsu and presentation college enter into a teach-out agreement​ | 3/31/23, lakynn haak, march 31, 2023.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – With the announcement of the upcoming closure of Presentation College (PC), Northern State University (NSU) entered into a teach-out agreement for Presentation students. Both Aberdeen institutions approved terms to foster student success with no disruption in education.

Presentation College students may finish the remainder of their college program at NSU as approved by the agreement. The arrangement between the two institutions ensures a smooth and seamless transition for students to complete their studies. Due to BOR policy, the Executive Director has the authority to ensure a transfer articulation may be entered between a South Dakota university and another institution.

“We want to welcome former Presentation College students into the Board of Regent system,” said BOR Executive Director Dr. Brian Maher. “Hopefully, the students will feel at home on Northern’s campus and immerse themselves in the NSU community.”

Take some time to plan out how information will be displayed on your PowerPoint. Titles should be at the top, and bullets underneath. You may want to add title slides if you are changing to a new topic.

Choose an easy-to-read font that isn’t stylized. Sans serif fonts tend to be easier to read when they are large. Try to stick to only two different fonts as well to keep the presentation clean.

We have all experienced the pain of a bad PowerPoint presentation. And even though we promise ourselves never to make the same mistakes, we can still fall prey to common design pitfalls.  The good news is that your PowerPoint presentation doesn’t have to be ordinary. By keeping in mind a few guidelines, your classroom presentations can stand above the crowd!

“It is easy to dismiss design – to relegate it to mere ornament, the prettifying of places and objects to disguise their banality. But that is a serious misunderstanding of what design is and why it matters.” Daniel Pink

One framework that can be useful when making design decisions about your PowerPoint slide design is Baddeley and Hitch’s model of working memory .

As illustrated in the diagram above, the Central Executive coordinates the work of three systems by organizing the information we hear, see, and store into working memory.

The Phonological Loop deals with any auditory information. Students in a classroom are potentially listening to a variety of things: the instructor, questions from their peers, sound effects or audio from the PowerPoint presentation, and their own “inner voice.”

The Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad deals with information we see. This involves such aspects as form, color, size, space between objects, and their movement. For students this would include: the size and color of fonts, the relationship between images and text on the screen, the motion path of text animation and slide transitions, as well as any hand gestures, facial expressions, or classroom demonstrations made by the instructor.

The Episodic Buffer integrates the information across these sensory domains and communicates with long-term memory. All of these elements are being deposited into a holding tank called the “episodic buffer.” This buffer has a limited capacity and can become “overloaded” thereby, setting limits on how much information students can take in at once.

Laura Edelman and Kathleen Harring from Muhlenberg College , Allentown, Pennsylvania have developed an approach to PowerPoint design using Baddeley and Hitch’s model. During the course of their work, they conducted a survey of students at the college asking what they liked and didn’t like about their professor’s PowerPoint presentations. They discovered the following:

Characteristics students don’t like about professors’ PowerPoint slides

• Too many words on a slide
• Movement (slide transitions or word animations)
• Templates with too many colors

Characteristics students like like about professors’ PowerPoint slides

• Graphs increase understanding of content
• Bulleted lists help them organize ideas
• PowerPoint can help to structure lectures
• Verbal explanations of pictures/graphs help more than written clarifications

According to Edelman and Harring, some conclusions from the research at Muhlenberg are that students learn more when:

• material is presented in short phrases rather than full paragraphs.
• the professor talks about the information on the slide rather than having students read it on their own.
• relevant pictures are used. Irrelevant pictures decrease learning compared to PowerPoint slides with no picture
• they take notes (if the professor is not talking). But if the professor is lecturing, note-taking and listening decreased learning.
• they are given the PowerPoint slides before the class.

Advice from Edelman and Harring on leveraging the working memory with PowerPoint:

• Leverage the working memory by dividing the information between the visual and auditory modality.  Doing this reduces the likelihood of one system becoming overloaded. For instance, spoken words with pictures are better than pictures with text, as integrating an image and narration takes less cognitive effort than integrating an image and text.
• Minimize the opportunity for distraction by removing any irrelevant material such as music, sound effects, animations, and background images.
• Use simple cues to direct learners to important points or content. Using text size, bolding, italics, or placing content in a highlighted or shaded text box is all that is required to convey the significance of key ideas in your presentation.
• Don’t put every word you intend to speak on your PowerPoint slide. Instead, keep information displayed in short chunks that are easily read and comprehended.
• One of the mostly widely accessed websites about PowerPoint design is Garr Reynolds’ blog, Presentation Zen . In his blog entry:  “ What is Good PowerPoint Design? ” Reynolds explains how to keep the slide design simple, yet not simplistic, and includes a few slide examples that he has ‘made-over’ to demonstrate how to improve its readability and effectiveness. He also includes sample slides from his own presentation about PowerPoint slide design.
• Another presentation guru, David Paradi, author of “ The Visual Slide Revolution: Transforming Overloaded Text Slides into Persuasive Presentations ” maintains a video podcast series called “ Think Outside the Slide ” where he also demonstrates PowerPoint slide makeovers. Examples on this site are typically from the corporate perspective, but the process by which content decisions are made is still relevant for higher education. Paradi has also developed a five step method, called KWICK , that can be used as a simple guide when designing PowerPoint presentations.
• In the video clip below, Comedian Don McMillan talks about some of the common misuses of PowerPoint in his routine called “Life After Death by PowerPoint.”

• This article from The Chronicle of Higher Education highlights a blog moderated by Microsoft’s Doug Thomas that compiles practical PowerPoint advice gathered from presentation masters like Seth Godin , Guy Kawasaki , and Garr Reynolds .
