essay about the effects of modern technology on communication

Effects of Technology on Communications Essay

In this speech, I would like to talk about how technology and communication have revolutionized the way we interact with one another. The digital platform has proven vital in maintaining mental health and social connections for many of the population. Moreover, it has provided us access to the latest news and information worldwide, enabling us to make informed decisions based on accurate data. Lastly, technology and communication have significantly impacted our personal and professional relationships, allowing us to maintain our connections with friends and family, regardless of distance. Technology and communication have become an essential part of our lives and have improved our quality of life.

With the emergence of various technologies, people can now easily and quickly communicate with each other through text messages, email, social networks, and instant messaging apps. For example, during the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic, digital technologies provided the necessary social connection (Bastoni et al. 3). Statistically speaking, the support of communication through digital means during COVID-19 has contributed to the maintenance of mental health for a large part of the population (Skałacka and Pajestka 278). Therefore, technologies help us significantly accelerate communication, even in another city, country, or continent.

Moreover, technology and communication allow us to access the latest news worldwide. Thus, satellite communications have many applications, including streaming services, media broadcasting, and news gathering (Kodheli et al. 1). We can analyze and share data and make more informed decisions based on accurate data. For example, information stored on digital datasets performs various societal functions, including process optimization and access to innovation (Richter et al. 5). Furthermore, technologies and communications significantly influence our professional and personal relationships. As technology helps people to be in closer contact with each other, it can improve relationships (Liu et al. 260). With the help of social networks and other available applications, we can maintain relationships with friends and family, regardless of distance.

In general, technology and communications have had a significant impact on people around the world. It allows us to communicate more effectively, access necessary information, and improve our quality of life. Technology and communication are unique tools for maintaining professional and personal relationships, searching for new opportunities, and making more informed decisions.

Impact of Technology on the Communication

Introduction, social networks, relationships altered, globalization due to the internet, works cited.

Communication technology happens to be the main breakthrough in the contemporary world of technology. Millions of people are connected via the Internet without even leaving their houses. This presents splendid opportunities for people to make foreign friends, develop businesses, and take part in globalization. The paper is going to unveil the main opportunities and the disadvantages presented by communication technologies. The communication in front of a computer makes it easier to trespass geographical boundaries and benefit economically while joys of social face-to-face communication become a reality of the past for contemporary youth which damages the social environment greatly.

Social networks nowadays are the main means for the youth to communicate, make friends, exchange information, and most importantly have their life tracked down online. While communication has long been limited to house boundaries (the development of phone cable connection), the Internet now gives an opportunity to showcase the personal life of an individual which significantly changes the social norms. While several decades ago it was somewhat improperly to expose one’s personal life, today the revealing pictures are not a surprise within the social networks. Moreover, this makes friends take another attitude towards friendship and communication. While a decade ago it was a common tradition to go out in the evening, come over to a friend’s house, or just talk about the problems bugging, today the social network status is enough to upgrade on the events in your life.

As such, the relationships between couples have to be elaborated on within the scope of contemporary communication technologies. People stopped going out as frequently as it was before – the dating websites have taken over largely (Tarbox 27). The invasion of online dating agencies has a great impact on people’s personal life. The couples do not get to have first eye contact and talk during the first meeting. They sit by their computer and talk to someone you do not even know the real name of. Teenagers use and frequently abuse modern technologies while parents often have no idea of the current problem because of the generation gap problem. Very often the experience that can be got due to real-life chats can be much richer than talking to a friend online. The non –verbal communication skills are lost, whereas a teenager will need to use those one day (Bast 57).

Globalization has been a great push for all countries all over the world to keep up to the high standards of education (Echezona et al., 078). This is a great opportunity for people to get abroad, for example, and study there for future higher goals setting. This is what globalization is all about – the economical growth of the entire country and its separately taken citizens. This way not only labor-seeking migration is exercised; new opportunities become available for people who want and are able to keep up to high global standards. An Internet connection makes it possible to exercise free research, phone calls, and more beneficial results for the seeker.

In conclusion, it must be said that communication technologies are changing social environments greatly. The teenagers – the most active participants – are altering the social norms currently. This is going to be a social communication revolution when there will be no need to leave the house except for groceries supplies. Communication online expands geographical boundaries but lacks personal contact that making it impossible to notice different hidden meanings through non-verbal communication.

The Impact of Modern Technology on Communication

1. introduction.

Technology controls the way we interpret and understand our present and future communication with increasingly broad means and different methods of communication or contact. It is a complicated science that inevitably requires improvement and change. In line with the rapid development of technology and the wide range of technology use, it is seen that both the communication devices and the quality of the use are affected by both positive and negative effects. While the prevailing point of view attributed to the developing technology emphasizes the positive aspects of communication such as communication speed, sharing, and reaching a large audience, the challenges focusing on the quality of communication and the demographic factors of the communication process reveal the existence of both. As a result, it is important to explain how these situations emerged, how they developed, and what form they took. In this study, the effects on communication caused by technology use were discussed in terms of the main sources of technological communication influencing our lives, as written and visually. With this study, the progress of technology in communication was tackled from a historical perspective, changing communication traits over time were disclosed, and the place of communication between individuals was handled. Technological communication sources, such as the internet, social media, mobile communication, etc., were discussed, and their effects on people in both negative and positive directions were emphasized. As a result of the research, it was concluded that the positive effect of communication technology is to exceed many people on many issues, the understanding and easiness of the communication exchange, the contributions made to the geographically separated individuals are beyond the negative aspects of communication networks such as a decrease in face-to-face communication, the loss of privacy in the individual, the creation of virtual enemies, and the increase in the violation of copyright rules.

2. Evolution of Communication Technologies

Introduction Communication technologies have evolved over time from the Sumerian and Babylonian forms to the contemporary internet devices. There are two forms of media that tend to attract scholars' attention. In modern communication, mass media consist mainly of movies, television, and radio, while oral media include the telephone and face-to-face communication. Communication technologies affect how people interact with their surroundings and with other individuals. Scholars argue that technological determinism is observed when the new technology causes individuals to adapt, resulting in changes in human behavior. As technologies evolve, improved body performances are observed as they change human body functionalities. Mobile devices have evolved in a manner that shows the ability of people to multitask or work simultaneously with various media. This creates concerns about possibilities of additional distractions or fragmented conversations. Consumer Use of Texting, Mobile Phone Calls, Face-to-Face, and Social Network Communication Additionally, mobile devices are adopted as a way of connecting individuals to the internet and social media platforms, hence increasing the ability of people to connect to other social spaces. Text messaging presents itself as the communication method that people consider as an immediate reaction compared to email, which is considered as the method that people use when responses are not immediately expected. There seems to be little evidence of younger users using mobile communication to come together. However, they appear to be using technology to better engage with particular peer audiences on an intimate basis. Rumors that technological devices reduce the private messages exchanged between friends are therefore not supported. In fact, personality differences, including being able to be alone and desiring solitude, seem to lead youths to use interpersonal technological devices in order to maintain their privacy; younger people with higher ability to switch communication can preserve relationships using mobile communication tools.

2.1. Historical Overview

The concept of communication dates back to prehistory, with significant changes over the years. Since humans began to express themselves, there is evidence of communication. In its early days, humans had to use military means to communicate, starting initially with the use of fire. Later, Cro-Magnon created cave paintings. In later millennia, graphic symbols developed by the Egyptians and Mesopotamians contributed to the codification of accepted meanings by a society. The invention of paper and print helped to multiply the effects of graphic communication. After these developments, considerable time passed before electrical communication became a reality. The telegraph, invented by Samuel Morse, was a step forward because it transmitted information by electrical impulses over a mile of cable. The telephone used a voice melodically module that the telegraph did not have to convey information and was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. This invention allowed us to eliminate the travel time of a telegram in exchange for a phone call. The fax machine allowed, for the first time, the transmission of textual information and the reproduction of images by means of the electrical impulse emitted by a photocell, a way to communicate in written form also by written (handwritten) form.

2.2. Key Technological Advancements

The advent of the digital computer: probably the single most important event in the past half-century of the technological process in the context of human affairs, which is the relationship with information. The digital computer as a device is important primarily in the sense that it has, coupled with the enabled precursor devices, vastly extended the capability of human society to process information. Seen but under a microscopic lens, it often appears that this device has created more problem than it has solved. A graphical display system which could automatically identify words in a sentence does not turn that sentence into a better story. 3. Effects of Technology on Communication

In an academic essay, please define and examine the impact of modern technology on communication. All communication technologies define the ways and types of relationships facilitated by them. This essay explores how the relationships between media and society embrace and are shaped by two-way communication technologies. We illustrate these points with an examination of the latter part of the first wave of innovation of seamless telecommunications technologies. The study has implications for future waves of pervasive computing. Consumers use communication media in ways beyond the function for which they were originally intended. Consequently, attempts to forecast the adoption of new media can be replete with uncertainty. At the same time, all communication technologies define the ways and types of relationships facilitated by them. Hence, media are inexorably related to the societies in which they are embedded. The first commercial news service based on telecommunication was established in 1849. By 1851, the use of five-thread wires was allowing five messages to be sent and received at the same time. The most striking innovation of the time was the New York Herald's Bloomberg. The latter model of wired telegraph made communication between individuals installed at both ends of the wire easy: this model was based on two-way communication links. The Herald's commercial success lay in preventing news from its competitors in Europe, allowing its readers to purchase the freshest information available on European news. As well, it gave its stock subscribers access to movements in the New York and London Stock Exchanges and the New Orleans Cotton Exchange, an almost instantaneous service unparalleled in the other stock exchanges in New York at the time.

3.1. Positive Impacts

There are three distinct positive impacts modern technology has had on the communication process. First, advanced electronic devices, especially cell phones and palm pilots, have dramatically reduced the potential for communication failure due to the inability to connect with others (although, as indicated, a new potential exists for miscommunication). Second, modern technology has rendered galaxies of data available for virtually instant retrieval by individuals around the world. Although this potential for access to vast amounts of information in an instant has an attendant potential for information overload, it is clear that the potential to gain vital information has been expanded to an unprecedented across-border extent. Third, modern technology has effectively eliminated the need for an individual or organization to be concerned with the problems and hazards created by the international mobility of the hands-on people delivering direct services to the end users. Although many common impediments to successful intercultural communication processes have been eliminated by modern technology, geography and time are the two key elements that continue to create significant obstacles to successful intercultural communications. While many advanced computer applications significantly reduce the considerations of both space (waiting lists dependent on geographic locality) and time (personal competition or conflict based on geographical translocation), two electronic applications, commonly referred to as non-real-time and real-time interactive modes, are distinctly depicted as the only communicative channels with international capabilities. Information or data may be transmitted from one location to another in an instant of non-real-time. Information cannot be processed, viewed, or sorted via non-real-time applications while an expert who can interpret, translate, or generate data remains a non-geographically fixed entity. In contrast, real-time applications of modern technology can fill the voids of both time and geography. The real-time applications usually demand the use of telecommunications technology. In addition to computerized capabilities, telecommunications gadgets must be connected into a system. The relationship or rapport between the communicative parties, including negotiational or confrontational dynamics, may be influenced by various adjuncts to the visual or verbal messages. In real-time interactive applications, required participants are connected physically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally to the task and associated communications.

3.2. Negative Impacts

In a time of exponentially growing technological advancements, a direct correlation can be observed between the change of human behavior and the continuously changing communication sphere. Technology has had a meaningful impact on the way people communicate with one another. At present, people have the ability to communicate via telephone, email, along with text and video messaging. The impact of technology on communication involves both positive and negative influences. It is the intention of the research to explore both of these aspects. While it cannot be claimed that the technology of the future is entirely negative, it is also true that in a world of tough environmental problems, many lack of human interaction and the decreased ability to read body language all play increasingly significant roles in the way people communicate. Thus, the decline in human interaction is a direct result of a lack of face-to-face communication. People are becoming increasingly inept at interacting with others in person, to the detriment of their interpersonal skills. In an age of instant responses, many fail to see the benefits of having to think through a response and engage in meaningful, articulate conversation. Reduced person-to-person interaction can have various consequences, from the shrinking of overall effectiveness to undermining the ability to interpret nonverbal cues and body language. The latter can seriously impact our ability to communicate objectively with another person, negating the chance to read for emotional clues and practice empathy or understanding.

4. Future Trends and Implications

The communication-oriented trends that we discussed in the preceding sections - corporate and public-sector policies, the growing use of telephone services, and computer bulletin boards - are likely to continue, or even perhaps accelerate, in the future. The apparent success of some American phone companies in lobbying for more favorable regulatory treatment of new services or approaches to pricing indicates an enduring upward momentum in the service direction. The manufacturers of private branch exchanges (PBXs) and comparable telephone systems, and the software companies that increase public access to the technical gains of the private branch exchanges, argue for a more decentralized approach. In the micro direction, the market for saddle or shoulder-sized cellular-phone systems far exceeded the most optimistic sales forecasts of the hardware firms that sell this rapidly evolving equipment. One other example of a growing demand for communications services, air transportation, will also drive the size and the schedules of the coming generation of communication satellites. Another force, in addition to the growing demand for computing machinery, the increasing size of mail bulletin boards, and the remarkable growth in the host computer-terminal trade of telephone services. Intelligent - within the limitations of the topic I can - of the growth in microprocessor power and the demand for mail service, the likely structure of the communication satellite industry of the 1980s, and the investment and research implications of these and other communication trends.

5. Conclusion

The rapid change in technology is impacting the characteristics of young learners, according to the OECD. Similar findings have been found for adult learners. Digital communication tools, with their constant updates and new gadgets, have changed the way citizens interact in the 21st century, disseminating culture and revitalizing cities. In university settings, the use of blogging as a reflection tool has known to be beneficial in nursing programs. Other models, such as the use of mobile phones, internships, and blogs boost students' communication and writing. New university courses that focus on broadcasting and advertising in technological environments are appearing on the international scene due to the conversion of traditional content. To what extent have we been successful in developing leaders with the habits and performance levels required by current job and business market requirements? Should we reconsider the identification of the most important communication skills required by graduates and what should the international content be? The future of the human resources and development components of international programs will revolve around such questions as the impact of technology is both a real and virtual setting, and on the overall environment in which we want our future leaders to be educated, work and live.

IELTS Essay:

Topic: Impact of technology on communication. (Advantages & Disadvantages).

Sample Answer: It is a true fact to consider that in the present day the world has become a global village. As a result technology has main impact to the contemporary world. Considering this, some analysts consider the positive impacts of technology on our communication while others shows the negative aspects of it. However, there are some pros and cons behind implementation of said proposal.

There are some significant advantages of the influences of technology on communication and time saving could be a significant fact to be considered. It is generally seen that few decades ago people used to send letters to exchange a few words and ideas with others and waited a long time to get reply from them. However, as the development of technology people use modern equipment for communication to each other. For example, telephone, mobile phones, internet and e-mails etc.  Moreover, building relationship easily and across the boundary with each other may be another merit of the technological advancement. Therefore, people are not getting alone anymore because closed families and friends get chance to find out their loved ones.

Despite, the advantages pointed out above regarding immense benefit of communication, there are some disadvantages that cannot be neglected without any careful consideration. Unstable cyber relationships could be a detrimental fact. It may be defined as that nowadays social media has brought people together and made new relationships possible. As result some relationships led to many crimes For instance, internet frauds, lying deceiving have become very common nowadays.
