Aim: The following experiment is conducted to check what happens to sound waves by creating a visual model of what happens when a vehicle passes by. 

Theory: The explanation for the Doppler effect is that each successive wave crest is produced from a position closer to the observer than the crest of the previous wave, as the source of the waves is heading towards the observer. A visual simulation of what happens to the sound waves is created by this project to make them sound very different as the vehicle approaches than when it exits.

Requirements: Ruler, Scissors, Tape, Toy car, Two pieces of coloured construction paper, Some plain paper, and a marker or a camera. 

Aim: The following experiment is to check and determine whether a rise in water density would cause a boat hull to sink deeper in the water to an observable degree as its temperature is elevated from 5 degrees C to 95 degrees C.

Theory:  This showed that increasing water temperature allows water molecules to move further out, decreasing upthrust in turn, and causing more water to be displaced by a floating mass as its buoyancy is decreased. If the water molecules spread outward due to high temperature, a large rise in water temperature can produce a noticeable difference in the water’s surface or even a small floating point

Requirements: 10 Identical Styrene Model Boats, 128 grams of steel, and a Digital Thermometer

Aim: How much of the electrical power supply of an incandescent lamp is lost by thermionic emission from the filament? If these damages are large, the operational performance of incandescent lamps could be substantially increased by their elimination.

Theory: The power output can be decomposed into thermionic emission and thermal-radiation elements using electricity, filament temperature, and ambient temperature details. The conduction is sequentially dependent upon the temperature of the filament (Fourier’s Law), but the exposure is proportional to the fourth power of the temperature of the filament (Stefan-Boltzmann Law).

Requirements: 25-watt evacuated light bulb, programmable power supply, two high-precision digital meters, and a precise digital thermometer.

Aim: The experiment is to equate straw insulation with traditional forms of insulation, which are fibreglass and rigid foam panels, which are widely used today.

Theory:  The most critical element in building an energy-effective contribution is adequate insulation. Insulation will hold the heat inside during cold days. Isolation will trap the sun outdoors on hot days. Insulation materials are structures that avoid the transmission of heat from a house inside and outside. To insulate walls, floors, and pipes, various materials may be used.

Aim:  This project aimed to research the effect of gas chemical properties on its ability to process and transmit infrared radiation ts the transmission of infrared light. The primary aim was to mask a transmissive gas heating element.

Theory:  The molecular structure of gas that specifically influences transmissivity in the infrared spectrum is confirmed by the evidence from both forms of the est. The air has high absorption zones, allowing areas of low transmittance that cause some obstructing in the infrared spectrum.

Aim: The aim of the project is that the houses be painted in both solid colours (red, blue, green, and orange) and mixed colours (red/blue and green/orange), this project examined the interior and exterior temperatures of houses and their insulation rates.

Theory: Data revealed that the order of internal temperature readings from peak to lowest matched the wavelengths of colour from longest to shortest fairly closely. Combination colour houses fell between their stable counterparts in general. Exterior temperature data shows that followed by red, red/blue, grey, blue, orange, and control, the green/orange house was the warmest. The highest insulation rate, followed by green, green/orange, red/blue, red, orange, and control, was obtained from the blue home.

Requirements: Oil paints, Control house painted white, and Digital and Infrared Thermometers.

Aim: Fiberglass, pine shavings, polystyrene, polyurethane, cellulose, perlite, polyethene foil, or bubble wrap where the goal of this experiment is to find which recycling process would be an effective electricity insulator.

Theory: This could be an asset in the summer, but even time would be spent on heating the house in the winter. It also took a bit longer than the other materials to cool fibreglass and only averaged around 12 minutes to heat it. As it warmed easily and also trapped heat to save energy, fibreglass was by far the most powerful insulator.

Requirements: Particle Board, Digital thermometer, Light Bulb, and Cardboard boxes. 

Aim: The following project is conducted to learn about the first-hand force of water.

Theory: At the foot of dams, hydropower plants are designed to take advantage of higher water pressure at the edge of a dam. The excess water is funnelled into a tube called a penstock into the dam. The water is then concentrated on a turbine’s blades. The water pressure of the water transforms the engine, and a power generator turns the turbine.

Requirements: Half gallon paper milk carton, Gallon of Water, Awl or 10p nail, Masking Tape, Ruler, Magic Marker, Pair of Scissors and Pad of Paper and Pencil to Make Notes

Aim: This experiment would be about magnets and water. Since water is diamagnetic, I used the magnets to transfer water, which means it appears to move further from magnets and electromagnets. A cookie tray with the magnets equally spread along the inside circumference of it.

Theory: Someone who studies water is a hydrologist . The study of the dynamics of electrically conducting fluids is called magnetohydrodynamics (MHD for short). One of them is salt water. You could levitate a frog if you had a powerful enough magnet. Diamagnetic and paramagnetic are also compounds. In addition, this may be the data that I require. To see whether the water is flowing or not, I would have to use rubber duckies or food colouring

Requirements: Rubber, Magnets, Angel food pie tin, Food colouring Timer, and Tape.

Theory: Hydropower plants at the foot of dams are built to take advantage of higher water pressure at the dam’s edge. The excess water is channeled into the dam via a tube known as a penstock. The water is then focussed on the blades of a turbine. The engine is transformed by the water pressure, and a power generator turns the turbine.

Requirements: Half gallon paper milk carton, a gallon of water, an awl or a 10p nail, masking tape, a ruler, a magic marker, a pair of scissors, a pad of paper, and a pencil to make notes are all required.

Physics Investigatory Project Class 12- Use and Impact of Recycled Materials in Thermal Insulation

Objective: To determine which recycling procedure would be an efficient electricity insulator, experiment with Fiberglass, Pine Shavings, Polyurethane, Polystyrene, Perlite, Cellulose, Polyethylene foil, or Bubble Wrap.

Theory: This project could be useful in the summer while saving time on heating the house in the winter. Physics Investigatory Project Class 12- Heat Transfer in an Incandescent Lamp

Objective: How much of an incandescent lamp’s electrical power supply is lost due to thermionic emission from the filament? If the damages are significant, the deletion of incandescent lamps could significantly improve their operating performance.

Theory: Using electricity, filament temperature, and ambient temperature details, the power output may be split into thermionic emission and thermal-radiation parts. Conduction is progressively dependent on filament temperature (Fourier’s Law), but exposure is proportional to the fourth power of filament temperature (Stefan-Boltzmann Law).

Requirements: A 25-watt evacuated light bulb, a programmable power source, two high-precision digital meters, and a precise digital thermometer are all required.

Physics Investigatory Project Class 12- Colors with Long and Short Wavelengths

Objective: The project’s goal is to measure the exterior and interior temperatures of buildings, as well as the insulation rates when the houses are painted in solid and mixed colors.

Theory: Data analysis showed that the order of internal temperature measurements from highest to lowest corresponded reasonably and precisely to the wavelengths of colors from longest to shortest. Physics Investigatory Project Class 12- Observations of Gas in the Infrared Spectrum

Objective; The goal of this project was to investigate the effect of a gas’s chemical characteristics on its ability to process and transmit infrared radiation. The main goal was to conceal a transmissive gas heating element.

Theory: Evidence from both forms of the test confirms the molecular structure of gas, which specifically determines transmissivity in the infrared spectrum. The air contains strong absorption zones, which allow for areas of limited transmittance, resulting in some obstruction in the infrared spectrum.

Requirements: PVC pipe, spectroradiometer, 8-12 micron infrared camera with digital imaging, Blackbody, and gases are required.

Physics Investigatory Project Class 12- Doppler effect

Objective: The following experiment is carried out to investigate what happens to sound waves by developing a visual model of what happens as a vehicle goes by.

Theory: The Doppler effect is explained by the fact that each subsequent wave crest is created from a place closer to the observer than the crest of the preceding wave, because the source of the waves is moving towards the observer. This project creates a visual simulation of what happens to the sound waves to make them sound substantially different as the car approaches than when it exits.

Requirements: Ruler, scissors, tape, toy car, two pieces of colored construction paper, some plain paper, and a marker or camera are required.

Objective: The goal of the insulation value experiment is to compare straw insulation to standard forms of insulation, such as fiberglass and rigid foam panels, which are extensively used today.

The distribution of marks for CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical 2024 is as follows:

CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical 2024: List of Experiments and Activities

CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical is divided into two sections - Section A and Section B. Students can check the complete list of experiments in each section here.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical Section A

In Section A, students have to study the following experiments:

  • To determine resistance per cm of a given wire by plotting a graph for potential difference versus current.
  • To find the resistance of a given wire using a meter bridge and hence determine the resistivity (specific resistance) of its material.
  • To verify the laws of combination (series) of resistances using a meter bridge.
  • To verify the laws of combination (parallel) of resistances using a meter bridge.
  • To compare the EMF of two given primary cells using a potentiometer.
  • To determine the internal resistance of a given primary cell using a potentiometer.
  • To determine the resistance of a galvanometer by the half-deflection method and to find its figure of merit.
  • To convert the given galvanometer (of known resistance and figure of merit) into a voltmeter of the desired range and to verify the same.
  • To convert the given galvanometer (of known resistance and figure of merit) into an ammeter of the desired range and to verify the same.
  • To find the frequency of AC mains with a sonometer.

Apart from the above experiments, students also have to study the following activities (for demonstration only):

  • To measure the resistance and impedance of an inductor with or without an iron core.
  • To measure resistance, voltage (AC/DC), and current (AC) and check the continuity of a given circuit using a multimeter.
  • To assemble a household circuit comprising three bulbs, three (on/off) switches, a fuse, and a power source.
  • To assemble the components of a given electrical circuit.
  • To study the variation in potential drop with the length of a wire for a steady current.
  • To draw the diagram of a given open circuit comprising at least a battery, resistor/rheostat, key, ammeter, and voltmeter. Mark the components that are not connected in proper order and correct the circuit and also the circuit diagram.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical Section B

The list of experiments and activities in CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical 2024 Section B is provided below:

  • To find the value of v for different values of u in the case of a concave mirror and to find the focal length.
  • To find the focal length of a convex mirror, using a convex lens.
  • To find the focal length of a convex lens by plotting graphs between u and v or between 1/u and 1/v.
  • To find the focal length of a concave lens, using a convex lens.
  • To determine the angle of minimum deviation for a given prism by plotting a graph between the angle of incidence and the angle of deviation.
  • To determine the refractive index of a glass slab using a traveling microscope.
  • To find the refractive index of a liquid by using the convex lens and plane mirror.
  • To draw the I-V characteristic curve for a p-n junction in forward bias and reverse bias.
  • To draw the characteristic curve of a Zener diode and to determine its reverse breaks down voltage.
  • To determine the wavelength of a laser beam by diffraction.

The activities (for demonstration only) include the following:

  • To identify a diode, an LED, a resistor, and a capacitor from a mixed collection of such items.
  • Use of a multimeter to see the unidirectional flow of current in the case of a diode and an LED and check whether a given electronic component (e.g., diode) is in working order.
  • To study the effect of intensity of light (by varying distance of the source) on an LDR.
  • To observe refraction and lateral deviation of a beam of light incident obliquely on a glass slab.
  • To observe the polarization of light using two Polaroids.
  • To observe the diffraction of light due to a thin slit.
  • To study the nature and size of the image formed by a (i) convex lens, and (ii) concave mirror, on a screen by using a candle and a screen (for different distances of the candle from the lens/mirror).
  • To obtain a lens combination with the specified focal length by using two lenses from the given set of lenses.

Suggested Investigatory Projects

The following are the suggested investigatory projects for CBSE Class 12 Physics:

  • To study various factors on which the internal resistance/EMF of a cell depends.
  • To study the variations in current flowing in a circuit containing an LDR because of a variation in (a) the power of the incandescent lamp, used to 'illuminate' the LDR (keeping all the lamps at a fixed distance), (b) the distance of an incandescent lamp (of fixed power) used to 'illuminate' the LDR.
  • To find the refractive indices of (a) water and (b) oil (transparent) using a plane mirror, an equi convex lens (made from a glass of known refractive index), and an adjustable object needle.
  • To design an appropriate logic gate combination for a given truth table.
  • To investigate the relation between the ratio of (i) output and input voltage and (ii) the number of turns in the secondary coil and primary coil of a self-designed transformer.
  • To investigate the dependence of the angle of deviation on the angle of incidence using a hollow prism filled one by one, with different transparent fluids.
  • To estimate the charge induced on each one of the two identical styrofoam (or pith) balls suspended in a vertical plane by making use of Coulomb's law.
  • To study the factor on which the self-inductance of a coil depends by observing the effect of this coil when put in series with a resistor/(bulb) in a circuit fed up by an A.C. source of adjustable frequency.
  • To study the earth's magnetic field using a tangent galvanometer.

CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical Guidelines for Visually Impaired Students

CBSE has specified certain guidelines for CBSE Class 12 Physics Practical for visually impaired students. Students can check the guidelines below:

  • The practical examination will last for two hours.
  • A distinct list of ten experiments will be provided.
  • The written practical examination for visually impaired students will coincide with the regular practical examination for all other students.
  • The written test for visually impaired students will be 30 minutes in duration.
  • The question paper provided to visually impaired students must be neatly typed and comprise 15 practical skill-based very short answer-type questions. Students are required to answer any 10 of these questions.
  • Visually impaired students may be permitted to have a writer as per CBSE examination regulations.
  • All questions in the question papers should pertain to the experiments listed, and each question should be designed to be answerable within about two minutes.
  • Visually impaired students are obligated to maintain a practical file, in which they should document at least five of the listed experiments, following specific guidelines provided for each subject. These practicals must be reviewed and signed by the internal examiner.
  • The format for documenting any experiment in the practical file should encompass details such as the aim, necessary apparatus, a brief explanation of the theory, the procedure employed, practical skills demonstrated, and precautions taken, among other relevant information.
  • Questions for the examination may be collaboratively generated by external and internal examiners to ensure equitable assessment.
  • VIVA voce questions may encompass topics related to fundamental theories, principles, concepts, required apparatus and materials, chemicals, experimental procedures, precautions, and potential sources of error.

  • Electromagnetic Induction Working Model

The name of this project is Wireless Power Transmitter. It works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. In this project a changing magnetic flux generated in the primary coil and due to this changing magnetic flux a charge induced in the secondary coil. And due to this induced charge the led glows. It is a very interesting project which you can make for your practical examination or for your science exhibitions. A well prepared investigatory project files also available with this model.

2. Thermoelectric Generator Working Model

Thermoelectric generator is a device which convert thermal energy in to electric energy. It is best project for science Exhibition. The total cost for making this project is somewhere between 300-400 (INR). A well prepared investigatory project pdf is also available with is Model.
