She had him begging not to leave, but turned out to ending their relationship- to rest, to get away from everything and to be better. It was one of the painful break up and goodbye.
On her return, after almost four years, as the CEO, she crossed the path again with one of the famous engineers of the country, her ex-boyfriend, Engr. Camero. Love is sweeter the second time around. It never faded. They just belong in each otherâs arms! Theyâre the cutest couple before, and the best couple in their best version now!

Book Review: Chasing Billy the Kid / Frank Stewart and the Untold Story of the Manhunt
Billy the Kidââunquestionably New Mexicoâs best-known citizen, past or present,â note authors Kurt House and Roy B. Youngâis a name that flavors this book and so many others the way chile verde does Southwestern cuisine. But Chasing Billy the Kid is far more than another Kid book or, for that matter, another book featuring Pat Garrett, the lawman best known for chasing Billy, catching him at Stinking Spring in December 1880 and shooting him down in Fort Sumner in July 1881. House and Young, both members of the Wild West History Association (WWHA), argue that unsung lawman Frank Stewart co-led the posse that caught Billy and gang at Stinking Spring. Furthermore, they contend, that recognition was stolen from Stewart âby glory-seeking associates Garrett, Charlie Siringo and certain lesser lightsâ in the hunt for the infamous outlaw also known as William H. Bonney, Kid Antrim and Henry McCarty.
This impressive book came to fruition because House, a firearms expert and collector, acquired a factory-engraved, pearl-handled Colt revolver once presented to Stewart by a grateful hotel owner in Las Vegas, New Mexico Territory. House wanted to learn more about the man behind that prized Colt, so he and WWHA compatriot Young went about the challenging five-year task of discovering as much as possible about Stewartâs long and eventful life. For starters they learned âFrank Stewartâ was an alias of German immigrant John Wallace Green, who was born Oct. 23, 1852, and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1858. Why he took an alias is uncertain, but perhaps heâd wanted to keep his identity secret while working as a stock detective. Stewart received accolades for his prominent role in the pursuit and capture of the Kid, but that gratitude faded fast. His name was all but forgotten for 140 years, despite having served New Mexicans in many different roles, as detailed by the authors. Among other occupations, Stewart worked as a railroad detective, a deputy sheriff and a ranch foreman. He was also arrested for horse theft in 1887 and lived to tell the tale. He married at age 48 in September 1903. By then heâd returned to using his given name. Green died at age 83 on May 11, 1935, and lies in an unmarked grave.
With this 423-page tome the authors may have succeeded in restoring John Green/Frank Stewart to his rightful place in Western history. While the book serves well as the first biography of a fascinating Westerner, it also includes a wealth of information about the Kid and nuggets of information (much new) about a cast of Lincoln County War characters, including Secret Service Agent Azariah Faxon Wild and Billyâs pals Charlie Bowdre and Billie Wilson. In a valuable 45-page appendix the authors have something to say about many of the people involved in the lives of the Kid and Stewart/Green. Another interesting appendix covers the guns used by participants in the Lincoln County War. The book is loaded with photographs and documents, many from the vast collection of the late Bob McCubbin, to whom the authors dedicate the volume.

Reel Rundown: ‘Killer Lies: Chasing a True Crime Con Man’ gives true crime followers everything they need to know and more about con man
Itâs clear that we live in a culture obsessed with crime. Stories about crime are all over the daily headlines, they make favorite themes for best-selling-book lists and they serve as common plotlines for movies and television shows.
In recent years, the interest in true-crime reporting has risen appreciably. Shows such as âDateline,â âForensic Files,â âSnappedâ and so many others attract a large share of the TV audience. And letâs not even get started on true-crime podcasts, the number of which â according to one 2024 report â amounts to, amazingly enough, some 23,000.
How many of these, though, are based on credible science? TVâs âForensic Filesâ works hard to prove its credentials. Still, with guys such as StĂ©phane Bourgoin out there providing media fodder, it should make any true-crime fan think twice about trusting so-called experts, especially those the media rely on.
Frenchman Bourgoin is the focus of the three-part documentary series âKiller Lies: Chasing a True Crime Con Man,â which was directed by Ben Selkow. The National Geographic Channel streaming series is based on a 2022 New Yorker magazine article written by Lauren Collins.
Titled âThe Unravelling of an Expert on Serial Killers,â Collinsâ article put forth a simple thesis: Bourgoin, a man who had built his reputation over decades, is a liar. Even worse, heâs a con man. And Selkowâs three-part documentary details every step of her investigation â albeit maybe a bit too slavishly.
Bourgoin emerged in the 1990s, claiming that an incident in 1976 had been the inspiration for his obsession with serial killers. That incident involved the murder of what, at various times, he identified as his âwifeâ or âpartner,â whose butchered body he had discovered.
He used that story to ingratiate himself to other crime victims. And then he claimed not just to have been trained by the FBI but to have used that training to interview a number of serial killers â 77 by one account. His subsequent career saw him write some 75 best-selling books while participating in numerous TV, radio, online and in-person interviews.
And during each, he told much the same story. Several of his fans, though, began to doubt what he was saying. And a group of them combined to form what they called the 4th Eye Corporation, which published YouTube videos pointing to Bourgoinâs inconsistencies.
Pretty soon the media began to catch up as well. In 2020, the French magazine Paris Match published an article in which Bourgoin owned up to at least some of his fabrications. Other publications, including the New Yorker, followed suit.
All of this is documented in Selkowâs series, which resorts to the over-dramatized effect of having some of the 4th Eye members appear in disguise (one woman in a Mardi Gras-type mask) to protect their identities. Collins and several others, including Bourgoin himself, participate in talking-head interviews
The problem is that there is little need for âKiller Liesâ to be spread over three installments. Selkow could easily have covered everything in a single one-hour episode.
And, too, the series fails in its attempts is to get at the heart of why Bourgoin lied in the first place. Even when Selkow and Collins confront Bourgoin on camera, he never really explains his motivations. Yes, he admits, he did make up things. But all writers do the same. And, he insists, at heart he is an honest man.
Of course, maybe itâs too much to expect something so definitive. It may be enough that âKiller Liesâ makes it clear that con-man Bourgoin, even beyond his obsession with murder, can be considered a sad symbol of our time
âWe are in the era of scams,â Selkow told a Vanity Fair magazine interviewer, âand thatâs not going anywhere.â

Chapter 1. The Mistress Had a Miscarriage
At the hospital, where the air was filled with the smell of disinfectant, Amber Stone was in high spirits. She left the doctorâs office with a laboratory test report in her hands. Just when she was planning to make a phone call, her phone rang first. She picked it up and heard her uncleâs voice on the other side of the line. âAmber, is everything alright between you and Rodney Barron?â he asked.
âYeah, weâre good, I guess? Why do you ask?â Amber asked in return.
âWell, because Iâve just heard that Rodney brought a pregnant woman to an antenatal check-up on the day before yesterday,â he answered frankly.
Amber burst out laughing and said, âAre you thinking that Rodney has a mistress out there?â
âYes!â he responded.
âDonât worry, even if all men in the world cheated, Rodney wouldnât!â She was completely positive about it.
Amber ended the conversation with her uncle and proceeded to call Rodney. The phone rang for some time before it was picked up. âIâm extremely busy, so donât bother me if thereâs nothing. Thatâs it!â His voice sounded cold and emotionless. Before Amber could speak, he hung up the phone. Her heart froze while her hand gripped the lab test report. Her enthusiasm had wholly dissipated.
Amber and Rodney had since been married for three years. He had always been gentle with her, but there had been a drastic change in his attitude lately. Not only was he cold, he also became very impatient while answering her calls. What exactly changed Rodney so much?
She turned around while still absorbed in her thoughts. Then, a figure swayed before her and a soft voice sounded in her ear. âHey, sister.â Amber turned her gaze in the direction of the voice and saw Celia Black, who had appeared next to her with a middle-aged woman.
Upon seeing Celia, the daughter of her fatherâs mistress, Amber frowned. âDonât simply address me as your sister. Iâm the only child my mother has ever given birth to!â Amber responded coldly with a look of disgust.
Unaffected by her demeanor, Celia smiled and gently asked, âAre you here to treat your infertility again, dear sister?â
âThatâs none of your business,â retorted Amber.
âArenât you going to ask me why Iâm here as well?â Celia smirked at Amber and continued, âIâm pregnant! The baby is Rodneyâs!â
Only then did Amber noticed that Celiaâs belly was a little rounder than before. Celiaâs feelings for Rodney had always been extremely obvious. She did everything possible to seduce him before he tied the knot with Amber. âIt seems to me that youâre not quite right in the head,â Amber sneered.
âYou donât believe me? How about you take a look at this then?â Celia showed her a medical consent form and her face turned pale as soon as she recognized the familiar handwriting on it. âRodneyâs signature? How could that be?â Amber was stupefied.
âRodney and I got to spend the night together four months ago. He was so vigorous that he kept me up all night and then, I was pregnant!â Celia smirked proudly. âHe really likes this child, you know. Let me give birth to this baby, then, you may resign as his wife!â
âB*tch!â Amber slapped Celia across the face as her body trembled with rage. All of a sudden, Celia fell to the ground and groaned, âOuch, my belly!â Amber was shocked, she had only hit Celiaâs face, but fresh blood could be seen leaking along her trousers. âHow could it be?â Amber thought.
Celia was taken to the emergency room by the medical staffs. Having no courage to leave, Amber went after them as well.
After a few moments at the emergency unit, Amber heard footsteps coming towards her direction. It was Rachel Grant, Amberâs mother-in-law. Rachelâs eyes narrowed as she saw Amber. âWhat happened? Celia had been fine, but why is she in the emergency room now?â
âIt was Miss. Stone. No, it was Mrs. Barron, she pushed her!â answered the middle-aged woman who was accompanying Celia earlier.
âYou infertile b*tch! You yourself canât give birth and are you not letting others do it too?â Rachel gave Amber a hard slap across the face, she had never liked her since the beginning. That slap was so strong that Amberâs face became swollen in a moment.
Before this, Amber had still thought that Celia was making up a story, but her mother-in-lawâs attitude had made everything clear.
A sense of despair crept through Amberâs heart. She felt so suffocated as if she was about to faint. But at the same moment, the door of the operating room opened. A nurse came out and reported that Celia had a miscarriage.
The news made Rachel extremely furious. She charged towards Amber, punched and kicked her while grabbing her hair.
Amber was beaten till her vision became blurry and soon, she lost her consciousness.
When she woke up, all she could see was white. She tried to sit up, but it was uncomfortable because her body was aching so badly. Nevertheless, she managed to position herself to lean against the bedside. While she was still catching her breath, the door was pushed open and a man wearing gold-rimmed glasses entered the room.
âHow do you do, Miss. Stone. Iâm Mr. Barronâs lawyer.â
âA lawyer?â Amber looked at the man before her in astonishment.
âPrecisely. I am Mr. Barronâs personal lawyer. Mr. Barron has entrusted me to discuss with you, Miss. Stone, about the divorce.â
âA divorce? Rodney wants a divorce?â Amber thought she must have misheard him.
The lawyer walked towards her and handed her a document. âThis is the divorce settlement agreement. Do have a look.â
Amberâs hands were shaking. Never in her wildest dreams had she imagined that Rodney would give her a divorce agreement one day. She refused to look at it. Instead, she turned her gaze to the lawyer and said, âInform Rodney Barron to meet me and let him tell me in person!â
âMr. Barron is a busy man, heâs not available!â stated the lawyer coldly.
âHeâs busy? Unavailable?â Amber scoffed. Since when did her relationship with Rodney declined to this extent? Sheâs even prohibited from meeting him?
She grabbed her phone on the bedside table, dialed Rodneyâs number, and waited with her eyes shut. To her surprise, the call couldnât get through.
Since when did she and Rodney reached such a state? First, an affair and now, a divorce?
The lawyer was still there, waiting impatiently. âMiss. Stone, please take a look at the agreement. Iâm very busy!â
The lawyerâs attitude said it all. During her marriage of three years, everyone associated with Rodney had treated her with respect. But now, the lawyerâs attitude was hard and cold. It was obvious that this was indeed Rodneyâs intent.
Amber grabbed the divorce agreement and swept her gaze to the part regarding property division. Tears started welling up in her eyes as she read what was stated, âAll property belonged to Rodney Barron before the marriage and so shall be excluded from the division.â
Rodney had once said that she was his everything and everything he possessed were hers. However, within just three years, their love was no more. Had Rodney finally revealed his true colors?
He had an affair behind her back and even got the mistress pregnant! Therefore, as the barren wife, she should make way, shouldnât she? Amberâs heart was bitter to the uttermost. She stopped reading the agreement and shifted her gaze towards the lawyer who had been staring at her. âGive me a pen!â
The lawyer took out a pen from his briefcase and handed it to Amber. As she took the pen, he added, âMr. Barron has said that you canât take away any of the jewelry he bought for you!â
Amber stared ahead blankly and remained motionless for a long time. Just when the lawyer thought that she would refuse, she slowly said, âOkay!â
Immediately, she picked up the pen and signed her name on the divorce agreement.
The lawyer took the divorce agreement and examined it briefly before proceeding to leave.
In the parking lot of the hospital, there parked a luxurious Aston Martin. The window rolled down, revealing an extremely handsome face. The lawyer scurried towards the car and said respectfully, âMr. Barron, madam has signed it!â
âShe signed it?â The man articulated the words slowly, staring at the lawyerâs face with his brooding eyes.
Observing his uncertain expression, the lawyer felt a little nervous and thought he should reply something. However, he couldnât say a word. The man shifted his gaze from the lawyer and turned to look at the night sky. After a while, he uttered, âYou may leave!â

'the dictionary story' is a kids' book that defies definition.
Samantha Balaban
Have you ever read a children's book where the main character is⊠the book?
Dictionary has noticed that even though her pages contain all the words that exist, she doesnât really tell a story like all the other books on the shelf do. So one day, Dictionary decides to change that and bring her contents â guts? pages? definitions? â to life.
A hungry alligator bursts out of the pages ready for a snack â and finds a donut several pages later. But Donut doesnât particularly want to be eaten, so he rolls off further into the alphabet. Alligator gives chase and the story soon goes off the rails â they crash into Queen who slips on Soap. And thatâs all before Tornado shows up! Definitions go flying, no one is in the right place. Can Dictionary put herself back together again?
"It's a book about chaos. Chaos and order. Fine line," says Oliver Jeffers who â along with Sam Winston â wrote and illustrated The Dictionary Story. The two previously worked together on 2016âs A Child of Books (where the main character is a child, not a book). Theyâve been working on The Dictionary Story pretty much ever since.
"But not working on it full time, seven years total" clarifies Oliver Jeffers. âMaybe if you were to add it all up, I don't know. I don't even want to think about that.â
(Sam Winston likes to joke that they knocked this one out in a week but heâs very much kidding â this book took work ).
For example, how do you make a book into a character that the children and adults reading the book can have a relationship with? "It was a real challenge because we had to literally make a book," explains Sam Winston. Luckily, his partner Haein Song is a bookbinder . "We had her literally make us two physical copies, which we then photographed and drew on and aged and then distressed in different ways." While the prop dictionary starts out all nice and new, by the end of the book sheâs looking very beat up. "But itâs told a pretty wild story," says Winston.
Haein Song also sent Jeffers the paper that she used to bind the dummy book. "She sent enough of that to me that I was able to do the paintings on the same paper. So it looked seamless," Jeffers explains. Then he scanned the sheets of paper with his illustrations on them. The end result is a combination of photography, painting, ink handwriting, and typography, for the dictionary definitions.
Author Interviews
In this 'alphabet,' 'o' is for helpful owl and 'c' is for escapist cup.
"It looks like a real dictionary," says Jeffers. "But if you pay close attention, you'll see that all of the definitions have been rewritten." Like:
zero /ËzÉȘÉrÉÊ/ Zero is a word that means nothing . Nothing is a word that means nothing . Even though zero is a different word for nothing , both mean nothing . This definition has just told you nothing .
miracle /Ë mÉȘr.É.kl / Something that is amazing or magical for which there seems to be no scientific or common-sense explanation. Often associated with finding a parking space or getting homework done.
The definitions are not not true, but they are a little sideways.
The Dictionary Story Copyright © 2024 by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston hide caption
As the characters in the book â like puddle /ËpÊd.Él/ A small pool of water. Puddles are often made by rain and they love to look up at the sky â come to life (and, in Puddleâs case, make friends with Ghost), they disrupt the text on the page. Puddle, who Cloud made by crying, soaks through the definition for "power." Alligator makes a hole in the "a"s as he escapes from inside the book. When Queen slips on Soap, some of the "s" words go tumbling off the page entirely. Letters end up out of order, or jumbled up in a pile. Definitions are in the wrong column. Sentences go all wonky.
"The idea behind the book is that youâve got this very rigid structure," Sam Winston says, of a typical dictionary. "So where some of the humor and the playfulness and the fun comes from is that this is a book doing something it shouldnât do." Essentially, coming alive.
And to circle back to why it took Winston and Jeffers so many years to make this book: thereâs not much software designed to do this in the way they needed it to be done. "Imagine a column of type in a newspaper accidentally becoming a waterfall of type," says Winston. "Everything gets knocked off its grid and its axis and out that waterfall emerges, say, a crocodile."
From 'F-Bomb' To 'Photobomb,' How The Dictionary Keeps Up With English
You'll probably never see that in a newspaper â or a normal, boring dictionary â because that is not what publishing software typically does. "We have all of these typographic structures that are not meant to be bent and then to bend them is like cutting out thousands of single letters and then sticking them back on the page," Winston says.
There was a lot of back and forth to get to the finished product â a lot of half completing drawings and half writing definitions, and then a lot of destroying an illustration and or a definition and sending it back again.
"It's a dance," says Sam Winston. "But you know, we like it. There's a lot of trust in the room, so we have fun."
And, by the way, the story itself is fun. While a lot of thought and work and planning went into making it, at its heart The Dictionary Story is just a good old fashioned chase story with a lot of chaos and a heartwarming ending (can Dictionary put herself back together? Maybe with a little help from some friends!)
"I think what you're looking at when you see these books are two individuals who have a deep respect for storytelling and the physical objects of books. Having fun together and playing well together and sharing that with the world," agrees Oliver Jeffers. "It's a pure joy."

Nicole Kidmanâs Sexy, Prickly Babygirl Is Utterly Thrilling
You have to hand it to Nicole Kidman: in recent months, she (along with The Idea of You âs Anne Hathaway) has been spearheading the current renaissance of May-December relationship movies involving glamorous older women and dashing young menâand, in her case, doing double duty. First came Netflixâs A Family Affair with Zac Efron, and now thereâs Babygirl , Halina Reijnâs sultry workplace thriller co-starring the always excellent Harris Dickinson, which just debuted at the Venice Film Festival . Both films are deeply and wonderfully unserious but, beyond that, itâs probably unfair to compare them. The first is disposable fluff, while the second is a mile-a-minute romp which thrills and unsettles in equal measure, and provides plenty to get your teeth into.
I would hesitate to call it a romance , thoughâ Babygirl is about lust , pure and simple. It opensâand endsâwith an orgasm, delivered with complete commitment and lack of self-consciousness by our leading lady, who is simply sensational here, in one of the meatiest parts sheâs had in years. But, we quickly realize, sheâs faking it. After her doting husband (Antonio Banderas) finishes, she rushes to the other room, opens her laptop, and watches some porn involving a girl with a baby voice calling a guy âdaddyâ before bringing herself to climax.
In a way, it makes sense. She is Romy Mathis, the high-powered CEO of a robotics company, forever glued to her phone, chairing meetings, and making crucial decisions, while also raising two young daughters and constantly reassuring her husband about his abilities as a theater director. So, itâs understandable that she might not always feel like taking charge in the bedroom, tooâshe wants to be taken .
Enter: Dickinsonâs Samuel, one of the new interns at Romyâs company whom she spots outside the building. When a rabid dog runs towards her on the street, everyone steps back, but he steps forward. As he holds, strokes, and calms her, Romy looks on, intrigued. From the outset, he proves to be different from the rest of his cohortâa somewhat contradictory yet entirely believable and uniquely Gen Z combination of bullishness and acute social awareness. He asks difficult questions; he keeps interrupting her; he takes it upon himself to choose her as his company mentor and arrange meetings with her.
She, in turn, begins fantasizing about him. She watches him dance with girls his own age at the office Christmas party and, the morning after, finds his tie lying on the floor. She takes it to her office and stuffs it into her mouth, hungry for danger, transgression, and the rush that comes with knowing that, in one swift move, you could blow up your entire life.
It all comes to a head in their one-to-one, when Samuel offers Romy his assessment of her: âI think you like being told what to do.â Sheâs outraged and electrified, they kiss, and neither knows exactly where they stand. A game of cat and mouse ensues: Samuel sends Romy a glass of milk at a work drinks, she downs it, and when she picks up the check for the whole team, he whispers âGood girlâ into her earâthe same phrase he used to soothe that agitated dog. He then invites her to a hotel room for their next âmeeting.â She obliges, but when she begins a speech about how inappropriate their relationship has become, it almost sounds like foreplayâlike the dialogue from the porn she consumes so ravenously.
What follows is as hot as it is hilariously confusing. Neither know exactly what to do or what they want; Romy attempts to leave but then comes back; they try things and, before you know it, sheâs on all fours. After her orgasm, she clings to Samuel like a baby. Itâs unclear whoâs actually in chargeâRomy tells Samuel that she doesnât want to hurt him, and he insists that he has power over her. He only has to say the word, and sheâd be fired.
And thus a torrid affair begins, further complicated by Samuelâs increasing interactions with Romyâs family, as well as his budding romance with another colleague, Romyâs ambitious assistant (Sophie Wilde). In one of the filmâs funniest scenes, a jealous Romy warns her young protĂ©gĂ© against the relationship, saying it could be perceived as an abuse of power. Thereâs also, of course, the constant, simmering threat of Samuel changing his mind, reporting Romy for real, and destroying her careerâa notion which seems to both horrify and excite her.
I fear Kidmanâs audacious turnâslippery, insatiable, reckless and then painfully vulnerableâmight prove too much for the Academy, but itâs one that demands to be seen. Yes, she crouches down on the floor to drink milk from a saucer and performs a striptease for her 20-something subordinate, but she somehow does it all while also making Romy feel like a conflicted, flawed, flesh-and-blood woman when it could all so easily have been parodic.
And she leaves absolutely nothing on the table. Much will (and should) be written about her utterly fearless sex scenes, but there are plenty of other sequences which leave her equally exposed: In one, Romy is shown getting botox, and in another, her teenage daughter (Esther McGregor) tells her she looks like a dead fish, pushing her own lips together in an exaggerated pout to mimic her. Later, we see Romy nervously scrutinizing her own reflection. There is certainly a sense of validation that she gets from being desired by Samuel, but to Reijnâs credit, her razor-sharp script resists spelling this out. Commendably, it also refrains from using a specific childhood trauma to explain away Romyâs proclivities. We learn that she was raised in a cultâand there are brief, disorientating flashbacks to that chaotic periodâbut that adds texture, rather than offering answers.
Dickinson is just as difficult to pin down. His domineering, self-assured Samuel is no victim, but as he gets to know Romy better, a strange and unexpected tenderness emerges, too. In one moment, heâs shown dancing in slow motion, his tattoos exposed and his innate swagger intoxicating; in another, he gently asks Romy to hold him. In one of the filmâs final scenes, Banderasâs beleaguered husband laments that female masochism is a male fantasy. Samuel scoffs. âThatâs a dated idea,â he counters, ever that indelible mix of brash and sensitive. He, Kidman, and Reijn deserve all the plaudits, as does Cristobal Tapia de Veer for his expertly tension-building score. (As I waited for the water bus after my screening, I heard someone humming it in front of me in the queueâalways the highest compliment.)
Admittedly, Babygirl isnât for everyone. It has divided critics and, even at the glittering premiere, as throngs cheered for the cast as the credits rolled, there were many others who slipped out, shaking their heads. Like all the other May-December films before it, itâs guaranteed to spark debate and inspire derision when it hits screens later this yearâbut, rest assured, it knows exactly what itâs doing. This is a thorny, unflinching declaration of raw female desireâand it is entirely shameless.

Wild Houses Kindle Edition
The riotous, raucous and deeply resonant debut novel from âone of the best story writers in the English language todayâ ( Financial Times ) Wild Houses follows two outsiders caught in the crosshairs of a small-town revenge kidnapping gone awry
With his acclaimed and award-winning collections Young Skins and Homesickness Colin Barrett cemented his reputation as one of contemporary Irish literatureâs most daring stylists. Praised by the Oprah Daily as âa doyen of the sentence,â and by the Los Angeles Times as a writer of âunique genius,â Barrett now expands his canvas with a debut novel that contains as much grit, plot, and linguistic energy as any of his celebrated short stories.
As Ballina prepares for its biggest weekend of the year, introspective loner Dev answers his door on Friday night to find Doll Englishâ younger brother of small-time local dealer Cillian Englishâbruised and in the clutches of Gabe and Sketch Ferdia, County Mayoâs fraternal enforcers and Devâs cousins. Devâs quiet homelife is upturned as he is quickly and unwillingly drawn headlong into the Ferdias' frenetic revenge plot against Cillian. Meanwhile, Dollâs girlfriend, seventeen-year-old Nicky, reeling from a fractious Friday and plagued by ghosts and tragedy of her own, sets out on a feverish mission to save Doll, even as she questions her future in Ballina.
Set against Barrettâs trademark depictions of small town Irish life, Wild Houses is thrillingly-told story of two outsiders striving to find themselves as their worlds collapse in chaos and violence.

Editorial Reviews
Praise for Wild Houses
âBarrettâs dialogue, spiked with the timbre of Irish speech and shards of local slang, makes these characters sound so close youâll be wiping their spittle off your face⊠Despite moments of violence that tear through the plot, the most arresting scenes are those of anticipated brutality, perfectly drawn vignettes that capture the lives of people caught in this deadly trade⊠Clearly, those years of writing short stories have given Barrett an appreciation for how fit every sentence must be; there isnât a slacker in this trim book. Even the asides and flashbacks hurtle the whole project forward toward a climax that feels equally tensile and poignant, like some strange cloak woven from wire and wool.â â Ron Charles, Washington Post
âA heartbreaker of a debut novel⊠Nicky â and her quest â is the soul of this fine novel. In Colin Barrettâs nimble hands⊠the lives of a small collective of mournful souls become vibrant before us, and their yearning is depicted with wistfulness, no small amount of humor and one dangerously ill-tempered goat.â â Dennis Lehane, New York Times Book Review
â[A] short, deftly written novel⊠The kidnapping serves as a binding device, bringing together a small, carefully drawn cast of characters under unusual, high-pressure circumstances⊠The release of that pressure is sometimes violent, but it is also revelatory.â â New Yorker
âBarrett soars into the tier of Kevin Barry and Sally Rooney, both influences, but his grim yet tender vision of humanity distinguishes his tale⊠Wild Houses is akin to a Yo-Yo Ma concert at Carnegie Hall: Barrett's pitch is perfect, the acoustics divine. He metes out his dialogue in syncopated bits, reminiscent of Barry but less slapstick. While a cheeky humor thrums throughout the novel, Barrett isn't particularly interested in redemption or even plain decency⊠Unfurls like a controlled detonation, rich with wonder and catharsis.â â Hamilton Cain, Minneapolis Star Tribune
âMemorable, character driven, and distinguished by the author's beautiful style⊠This carefully plotted novel, with its superbly realized Irish setting, is a generous gift to readers.â â Booklist (starred review)
âIrish writing is on fire and full of ballsy young upstarts like Barrett. This dark, raucous debut novel is about two outsiders who get caught up in a kidnapping in small-town Ireland. Expect drugs, wild parties and revenge, as well as rich language and vibrant characters.â â Sunday Times
âEver since Barrettâs short-story collection Young Skins appeared in 2014, the publishing world has been awaiting his novel. Edgy and sharp, itâs a tale of a kidnap and small-time drug dealers in County Mayo. Sally Rooney and Anne Enright are fans, which tells you something.â â Financial Times
âAnother year, another rush of novels by hot Irish talent. Barrett has already produced two rapturously received short story collections. This, his debut novel, centres on the kidnapping of a teenage boy in a west Ireland town, before spooling outwards to explore its impact on those who know him. His short stories prove Barrett knows how to craft a beautiful sentence that simmers with impending violence. This nastily slow-burn chiller is shaping up to be one of the novels of the year.â â Daily Mail
âAnother much-anticipated Irish debut is Colin Barrettâs raucous Wild Houses , about two unfortunate recluses who are dragged into the surreal and violent underbelly of their small town.â â I-D
âA humour-inflected revenge fantasy involving interactions between dealers, enforcers and various other locals in a small Irish town.â â Globe and Mail
âA remarkably resonant portrait of everyday lives in Ireland. Barrettâs gritty and raucous first novel features the hallmarks of his acclaimed short story collections Homesickness (a New York Times Best Book) and Young Skins : linguistic dexterity in the service of fully realized characters and vivid depictions of hard-scrabble small-town Irish life.â â Library Journal
âThis strange and beautiful novel brings to life an entire world. Wild Houses is a book not just to read but to live inside.ââ Sally Rooney
âVivid, controlled, very funny, and very moving - Barrett has the kind of pure writing chops that are vanishingly rare.â â Kevin Barry
"Colin Barrett quietly, insistently, writes so deeply into his characters you could reach out and touch them. Wild Houses is a gift of true storytelling and Barrettâs talent burns up the page.ââ Anne Enright
"Wild Houses is swift, tender, and honest. Itâs been a long time since Iâve been so worried, so heartbroken, so moved by a set of funny misfits. Barrett is one of our keenest observers of the miraculous amid the everyday and of the uncommon beauty of common things, the power of attention. When I finished this novel, I desperately wanted to call Dev, Doll, or Nicky, just to see if they were okay, to see if everything had turned out alright. A brilliant novel." â Brandon Taylor
â Wild Houses has a rare momentum that comes from the rhythms of the sentences, the vivid descriptions and the brilliantly chosen details. The momentum emerges also from the depth and complexity of the main characters and the wide sweep of the narrative. In a small town in the west of Ireland over a few days, a whole world, memorable and edgy, is captured for the reader.â â Colm TĂłibĂn
âVivid and wild, funny and chilling â Wild Houses is the business.â â Roddy Doyle
âColin Barrett proved with his short stories that he's not only one of the most stylistically gifted writers working now, but also one of the most generous. His first novel, Wild Houses , is deft, intricate, unique â restorative in its refusal to be anything but itself. He is a talent of the rarest kind.â â Nicole Flattery
âColin Barrett made us wait for this one, and it was worth it. Sharp and affecting, expansive and playful, Barrett has written a gorgeous novel filled with gorgeous sentences. A dream to read, and no doubt destined to be one of the novels of the year.â âMichael Magee, author of Close to Home
Praise for Colin Barrett
â[Barrett] writes what he knows, but he also writes to discover what he doesnât know, a simple but crucial distinction you can sense instinctively, no matter how many of his compatriots youâve already read.ââ Los Angeles Times
âExact and poetic⊠One sign of [Barrettâs] striking maturity as a writer is that his characters stay in character⊠Mr. Barrett does foundational things exceedingly well â structure, choices of (and switches in) perspective â without drawing attention to them⊠His judgment is better than authoritative; it is imaginative and enlarging.â â New York Times
âSuperb⊠There is an utterness to his attention, a devotion to the lives of his characters, that shifts the work into some more lasting place. Barrett is already one of the leading writers of the Irish short story, which is to braggingly say, one of the leading writers of the short story anywhere. He means every word and regrets every word. He just kills it.â â Guardian
âBarrettâs voice, though bolstered by Irish tradition, is entirely his own.â â New Yorker
âMany a writer claims mastery of technique, but few deliver at the level of Colin Barrett, whose roving perspectives, lopped-off endings and Kevin Barry-esque dialogue dazzleâŠBarrett is a doyen of the sentence; each snaps and sings like a bullwhip.ââ Oprah Daily
âNo matter how grim a given scene by Barrett can get, itâs a thrill to be alive to hear him.â â Paris Review
âBarrett proves that writing what you know can yield subversive and innovative results.ââ Bustle
âBarrett simply outwrites many of his peers with a chilling confidence that suggests there is far more beneath the surface than merely the viciously effective black humour.â â Irish Times
âMesmerizingly powerful⊠Iâve learned so much from Colin Barrettâs work as a reader and writer.â â Sally Rooney
âColin Barrett, like all great storytellers, has the ability to weave a broader chronicle of Ireland out of stories that remain intimate, powerful and regional. Out of the local, the universal appears. He defines the many shades of the present time and suggests a compelling future. He is a writer to savour and look out for.â â Colum McCann
âLanguage, structure, style â Colin Barrett has all the weapons at his disposal.â â Kevin Barry
âNo story writer at work today thrills me more than Colin Barrett, whose characters feel immediately so familiar and true in their capacity to maim and love.â â Brandon Taylor
