Fortunately, there are a lot of scholarships out there for veterans, and all you have to do is apply for them. National Association of American Veterans

This organization is focused on giving back to the veterans that have served this country. The National Association of American Veterans offer several initiatives, one of them being sponsorship for ACT and SAT preparatory programs . Even going the extra mile to volunteer for societies and organizations like this one can prove to scholarship reviewers that you’re serious about this cause and set you apart from other applicants. 

The American Legion

The American Legion is a nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting veterans and their families through mentorship, advocacy, and support. They offer scholarships and programs, such as the Legion Riders and the Legacy Scholarship , to ensure veterans are taken care of on the homefront. 

Disabled American Veterans

Getting help from organizations like the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) can take a big load off of your shoulders. DAV offers services and opportunities to veterans young and old to receive benefits and transition into their next phase of life. This organization also hosts job fairs for veterans and free transportation to and from doctor’s appointments. Volunteers are also encouraged, and some of the benefits DAV offers even extend to family members!

The GI Bill helps veterans and active duty service people pay for school. If you have served on active duty after September 10, 2001, you may qualify for the educational benefits!

Notably, the GI Bill may cover the cost of public, in-state tuition and fees. The GI Bill rates for private and foreign colleges and universities is capped (this cap changes from year to year). The GI Bill also provides students with money for housing, books, supplies, and even moving expenses if they are moving from a rural part of the country.

The Yellow Ribbon Program is another financial aid program that the Department of Veterans Affairs runs. This program helps veterans pay for certain types of education that the Post-9/11 GI Bill that we discussed above does not cover. This includes out-of-state higher education, private school, or graduate school tuition. Students must ensure that their college or university participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program. About The Scholarship

The Veterans United Foundation Scholarship creates opportunities for family members of service members and Veterans to achieve their educational dreams. Launched in 2012, the scholarship program is funded by contributions from Veterans United Home Loans and its employees. Since our scholarship program was created, over $1 MILLION has been awarded to support the educational dreams of military families across the U.S.

Eligibility

To qualify for the scholarship program, you must meet one of the following conditions:

• The applicant is a veteran with 100% service connected disability
• The applicant is a surviving spouse of a deceased servicemember from a service-related death
• The applicant is a surviving child of a deceased servicemember from a service-related death

Other Requirements

• Currently enrolled or planning to enroll in an accredited college or university for the upcoming semester
• Pursuing an associate's, bachelor's, graduate, post-graduate or doctoral degree
• Comfortable with sharing personal stories and aspirations with Veterans United Foundation
• Deceased parent or spouse's military documents (DD214 and death certificate /or DD1300)
• Official benefit letter showing disability rating (if applicable)
• Full FAFSA submission
• Proof of enrollment from your accredited college or university
• Government-issued photo ID
• Able to provide Veterans United Foundation with receipts or invoices related to eligible educational costs as they are incurred in order to receive payment. Eligible costs include tuition, books, fees, school materials and some aspects of room and board as determined by Veterans United Foundation.
• Candidates may be required to complete a background check

Available to current dues paying (for past two years) member of the American Legion, Auxiliary, or Sons of The American Legion who is a student who has had at least one year of college and is in need of financial assistance to pursue an undergraduate degree.

America’s Child – Higher Education Assistance – americaschild.org – Established to provide college education and welfare assistance to the surviving children of military heroes who have already given their lives in patriotic service to their country fighting our nation’s war against terrorism as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and the Philippines, Operation Iraqi Freedom or future conflicts.

AMVETS Scholarships – Annually awards scholarships to Veterans/active military, their sons, daughters or grandchildren. A son, daughter or grandchild of a deceased Veteran is also eligible.

Army Women’s Foundation – The Army Women’s Foundation recognizes the importance of education and the role it plays in personal, professional and economic fulfillment. The Army Women’s Foundation Legacy Scholarship Program provides grants to women soldiers, past and present, and their lineal descendants to help them attain their educational goals. The Legacy Scholarship Program offers financial support in four areas: Certificate programs, Community College coursework, Undergraduate Degrees, and Graduate Degrees. Scholarships are awarded only for coursework from accredited institutions. Scholarships are based on merit, academic potential, community service, letters of recommendation, and need. Community College and Certificate Program Legacy Scholarships will be awarded up to $1,000. College, University, and Graduate Program Legacy Scholarships will be awarded up to $2,500.

Chief Petty Officer Scholarship Fund – cposf.org – For qualified family members of Chief Petty Officers including spouses and children (natural born, adopted or stepchildren).

Digital Workshop Center – digitalworkshopcenter.com/ – We are dedicated to supporting our veterans by offering a veterans tech skills scholarship designed to assist them in pursuing their educational goals.

Dolphin Scholarship Foundation – grants are available, on a competitive basis, to high school or college children/stepchildren (unmarried, under age 24 at time of deadline) of: (1) members or former members of the Submarine Force who have qualified in submarines and have served in the Submarine Force for at least eight years; or of (2) Navy members who have served in submarine support activities (e.g., submarine bases, tenders, and rescue vessels) for a minimum of ten years.

Earl Jennings Puckett Memorial Scholarship – patriotlegacyfund.org/scholarships – The scholarship is awarded annually in the amount of $5,000 to an eligible applicant that fully embodies the spirit of service in their community as determined by the Patriot Legacy Fund scholarship committee.

Educationconnection.com – educationconnection.com/online-colleges/scholarship-for-veterans – The scholarship is to help fund Veterans, Active Duty Members, and Military Spouses college education.

Fisher House Foundation Scholarship Programs – militaryscholar.org – Open to sons and daughters of active duty, reserve/guard, or retired military commissary customers.

Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund – Students are eligible if they are the dependent child of an active duty Service Member who was killed or permanently disabled (100%) rating as the result of an operational mission or training accident, or who is currently certified as POW or MIA.

Housing Scholarship – Provides students with an affordable living option. Recipients will live in a home-like setting where they work in cooperative partnership to purchase and prepare meals and assume responsibility for household tasks. Recipients are responsible for their fair share of household expenses such as food and utilities. Each student contributes approximately $950 per semester.

Liberty University’s Heroes Fund Scholarship -Provides scholarship assistance for qualifying disabled veterans, Purple Heart recipients, and spouses of veterans killed in action. For more information on this scholarship visit liberty.edu/online/heroes .

Marine Corps – Law Enforcement Foundation, Inc. – mclef.org – Assistance primarily rendered to children of Marines or Federal law enforcement personnel who were killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving our country at home or abroad. These funds enable us to provide these children with scholarships for their higher education. When a child of a United States Marine is afflicted with a physical or mental disability and requires special medical equipment or tutoring, our Foundation may grant financial assistance to that Family if their personal insurance does not cover the complete cost of treatment for this child.

Marine Corps League – Scholarship Program – mclfoundation.org/scholarship – Over three hundred scholarship grants are given annually to applicants. The foundation has started a blocked scholarship fund to build a trust to assist in the funding of its regular scholarship program. Scholarships are applied for and awarded by the Marine Corps League Scholarship Committee using applications and standards developed by that committee.

Marine Science Scholarship – Applicant must demonstrate financial need and academic excellence. Applicant must attend a Northeast Florida institution or reside in the area.

Military Family Scholarships – Visit the site to learn about a variety of scholarships and funding opportunities for military Families.

Military Order of the Purple Heart Scholarship – Available to the recipient of a Purple Heart; a direct descendant of a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart or of a Veteran killed in action or who died of wounds; or a spouse or widow(er) of a recipient of the Purple Heart.

Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts (MyCAA) – : mycaa.militaryonesource.mil – Provides up to $4,000 (over 2 years) of Financial Assistance for military spouses who are pursuing degree programs, licenses or credentials leading to employment in portable career fields.

Military Spouse Fellowship Program for Financial Counseling – afcpe.org – FINRA Investor Education Foundation’s 2010 Military Spouse Fellowship gives spouses the training they need to earn the Accredited Financial Counselor® (AFC®) designation, which gives them marketable job skills and provides them with the knowledge and tools they need to help military Families overcome financial challenges.

“The DRS Guardian Scholarship Fund drsfoundation.net/guard is open to any high school or college student who is a son or daughter of a Guardsman killed in an operational or training mission in support of operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom or New Dawn.

Navy League of the United States – Currently, the Navy League Foundation has a total of 25 endowed scholarships. Navy League Councils across the United States provide additional scholarships to students and Sea Cadets in their cities and regions.

Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Education Programs – NBCC Foundation – The NBCC Foundation Military Scholarship Program is designed to encourage Service Members and Veterans to pursue careers in professional counseling. The program provides financial support to students who enroll, or seek to enroll, in a CACREP accredited counseling program during or after military service, and who commit to serving military personnel.

North American Van Lines – Offers an annual military scholarship for current or former active-duty military and their dependents interested in logistics/supply chain management or operational management studies.

NTA Florida Undergraduate Scholarship – Applicant must be a permanent resident of Florida who is enrolled in an accredited two- or four-year college or university in the State of Florida and is entering the second year of a two-year school, or junior or senior year of undergraduate study in the fall of the calendar year of application.

Operation Mom scholarships.com/financial-aid – Our Military Kids provides tangible support to the children of deployed and severely injured National Guard and Military Reserve personnel through grants for sports, fine arts and tutoring that nurture and sustain the children during the time a parent is away in service to our country.

Paralyzed Veterans of America Scholarship –  Paralyzed Veterans’ Educational Scholarship Program was established in 1986 to help members and their immediate Families gain post-secondary education from accredited colleges and universities across America. Since the program’s inception, the organization has funded $319,000 in scholarship awards.

Patriot Scholarship divinemercy.edu/financial-aid –This 10% tuition scholarship is for students enrolling in a new program of study at Divine Mercy University who are eligible veterans, active duty military, reservists, retired military, and/or spouse/dependents of the same.

Pat Tillman Foundation – Individuals eligible for the Leadership Through Action – Tillman Military Scholars program include Veterans and active Service Members of both pre- and post- 9/11 service; Service Members who wish to start, finish, or further their education; Service Members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve); Service Members pursuing undergraduate, graduate, post-graduate, two-year, four-year, public, private, vocational, and trade degrees or certifications; and dependents of Service Members (children and spouses).

Rosewood Family Scholarship – Applicant must be a direct descendant of Rosewood Families affected by the incidents of January 1924. Initial Student Florida Financial Aid Application is required for verification. Applicant must not owe a repayment or be in default under any state or federal grant, loan, or scholarship program unless satisfactory arrangements to repay have been made. Tuition and fees up to $4,000. Scholarship awards are $5,000 to be made co-payable to the scholarship recipient’s institution for payment of tuition, books and supplies and may be reapplied for up to four years for a maximum of $20,000. The application process is the same for new applicants and renewals.

Scholarships for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans and Service Members – The Scholarships for Children and Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans and Service Members (CSDDV) provides scholarships for dependent children or un-remarried spouses of Florida Veterans or Service Members who died as a result of service-connected injuries, diseases, or disabilities sustained while on active duty or who have been certified by the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs as having service connected 100% permanent and total disabilities. CSDDV also provides funds for dependent children whose parent is classified as a prisoner of war or missing in action by the Armed Forces of the United States or as civilian personnel captured while serving with the consent or authorization of the United States Government during wartime service. CSDDV provides funding for tuition and registration fees at an eligible postsecondary institution or the equivalent at an eligible private postsecondary institution in Florida.

Scholarships for Military Children – The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created to recognize the contributions of military Families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military Family community. If your mother or father is active duty, reserve/guard, or retired military personnel or you are the survivor of a deceased member, and you have a military dependent I.D. card you can apply!.

Selby Scholarship – Applicant must be a resident of DeSoto, Manatee, or Sarasota County in Florida, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be eligible for financial aid.

Society of the First Infantry Division – – 1stid.org/foundation – for children of Service Members killed in combat or training accidents while serving in a unit assigned or attached to the 1st Infantry Division and authorized to wear the 1st Infantry Division patch.

Spouse Tuition Assistance Program (STAP) – militarybenefits.info – partial tuition assistance for spouses of Active Duty airmen or officers, who accompany members to overseas locations and wihttp://www.afas.org/Education/STAP.cfmll be attending college programs. The focus of the program is on the completion of degree or certificate programs that provide increased occupational opportunities for spouses.

Tailhook Education Foundation – tailhook.org/Foundation – must be a high school graduate and the natural, step, or adopted son, daughter or grandchild of a current or former Naval Aviator, Naval Flight Officer, or Naval Aircrewman. Also eligible are individuals or children of individuals who are serving or have served on board a U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier in ship’s company or the air wing.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant (TEACH Grant) – teach-ats.ed.gov/ – TEACH Grant Initial and Subsequent Counseling and A TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve (ATS) so that you may receive one or more TEACH Grants to pay for your education.

TFS Scholarships – tuitionfundingsources.com – Veterans should use scholarship funds like “gap insurance” to pay for any tuition, housing, fees or books not covered by their benefits. Dependents of veterans may or may not be covered by the benefit programs making scholarship funds even more important for them. The Fund for Veterans Education – To help meet the cost associated with higher education for Veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan or Iraq since September 11, 2001 and who are now enrolled in college or vocational-technical school.

Tillman Military Scholarships – VeteransScholarships – To support educational opportunities for Veteran and active Service Members and their dependents (children and spouses). Intended to cover direct study-related expenses such as tuition, fees, and books, as well as other needs such as room and board and child care.

Undergraduate Scholarship Program – CIA – www.cia.gov/careers/student-opportunities -If you are a high school senior planning to enroll in a 4-or 5-year college program, or you are a college freshman or sophomore enrolled in a 4-or 5-year college program, who is looking for career experience in a dynamic environment, apply to the CIA’s Undergraduate Scholar Program and contribute to the work of the nation before you graduate.

VA Mortgage Center Scholarship – An ongoing scholarship offer for students with military affiliation, ROTC, and children of military members.

Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Scholarship Programs – The Veterans of Foreign Wars has several scholarship programs across the nation. Visit the site to learn more or contact your local VFW.

VFW Military Scholarships – The VFW’s Military Scholarship program provides 25 $3,000 scholarships annually to VFW members who are currently serving in uniform or have been discharged within the 36 months before the December 31 deadline.

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MILITARY FAMILIES

Florida Department of Education Eligibility Requirements for Children & Spouses of Deceased or Disabled Veterans & Service Members (CSDDV).

Veteran or Service Member: CSDDV provides scholarships for Florida resident dependent children and un-remarried spouses of Florida Veterans and Service Members whose official military and residency status have been certified by the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs.

Scholarship Funding for Children and Spouses: CSDDV provides funding for tuition and registration fees at an eligible Florida public postsecondary institution or an equivalent amount at an eligible Florida private postsecondary institution.

Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program – gibill.va.gov – This program allows institutions of higher learning (degree granting institutions) in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. The institution can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution.

15 Scholarships for Military Children, Spouses, and Veterans

Serving as a member in the U.S. Military is one of the greatest sacrifices that an American can make. Not only are soldiers placed in dangerous circumstances, but they also must make a gigantic sacrifice in regards to their families.

The military life affects not only the soldier, but also the husband or wife, and children that belong to the service member. They must also make sacrifices by not having a loved one around for substantial periods of time.

As a result, the U.S. government has always attempted to help reward service member families with financial benefits in order to compensate them for their sacrifice.

There are many military scholarships that exist. Scholarships for military spouses, children, and veterans are abundant, you just have to know where to look.

Below you’ll find 15 of the best scholarships that are available both for veterans themselves, as well as their dependents.

7 Scholarships For Military Children

There are over 1.3 million active duty military personnel in the United States. When you consider the even larger number of spouses and children, there are millions of individuals each year impacted by military service.

What scholarships exist specifically for children and grandchildren of U.S. service members, both active duty and veterans?

#1 – AMVETS Scholarship

Amount: $4,000

The AMVETS scholarship is awarded annually to students for four years in the amount of $1,000 each year. The scholarship is specifically designed and reserved for children as well as grandchildren of active duty military or veterans.

The program has other scholarships that children may apply for that are a little more selective, including the Dr. Aurelio M. Caccomo Family Foundation Memorial Scholarship ($12,000).

How to apply: Applicants are required to be current high school seniors. They also must be United States citizens and provide evidence that the father or mother served in the military honorably.

The AMVETS scholarship considers GPA and financial need. The deadline to enter is January.

#2 – Scholarships for Military Children

Amount: $2,000

The Scholarships for Military Children is funded by Fisher House and its contributors. In nearly two decades the scholarship has raised $18 million dollars for recipients.

In 2018, a total of 500 scholarship grants (each for $2,000) were awarded to recent high school graduates. It is currently closed for this year but will open up once again in mid-December 2023.

How to apply: The application process is conducted online. In addition to factoring in academic achievement and community involvement, the scholarship also requires a short, 500-word essay. The essay topic will be announced when applications open in December.

Applicants must also validate their eligibility as a military dependent by entering the benefits number found on the reverse of the DD Form 1173 Identification Privilege card.

#3 – Chief Petty Officer Scholarship Fund

Amount: Varies

The Chief Petty Office Scholarship Fund grants various funds to numerous recipients every year. All children of active duty, retired, or reserve Chief Petty  Officers are eligible for the award, including adopted and step-children.

The non-profit organization established the scholarship to generate and distribute funds specifically for educational opportunities. Candidates eligible for scholarship awards are non-uniformed spouses or dependent children of all Chief Petty Officers in the U.S. Navy.

How to apply: The guidelines for applying include:

• Be about to graduate or have graduated from high school or earned a General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
• Must intend to enter or currently be enrolled in a community college, vocational college, or university.
• Be immediate family members of Chief Petty Officers, or adopted or step-children.

The deadline to enter is April 1.

#4 – Frederick C. Branch Scholarship Program

The Fredrick C. Branch scholarship is named after the first black officer to serve in the United States Marine Corps. The NROTC scholarship is awarded to military children that plan to attend one of the 17 historically black colleges in the United States.

Each year, the Fredrick C. Branch scholarship awards nearly 70 Branch scholarships to recipients. Each awardee receives two, four-year installments, or one, three-year installment.

The scholarship fund is open to all children of military personnel as long as they plan to attend one of the 17 black historical colleges.

#5 – Hero’s Legacy Scholarship

The Hero’s Legacy Scholarship was created to provide funds for the children of a parent that has fallen in battle or receives full disability compensation. It honors not only those that have served but have had their life significantly altered as a result.

The scholarship is funded by tax proceeds from the book “Of Thee I Sing. A Letter to My Daughters” by former U.S. President Barack Obama, as well as private donations. The amount to be donated is based on funds received.

How to apply: The program is open to dependent, unmarried children under the age of 23 of a service member who died or was disabled since 9/11. 

You need to apply online. You will also need a transcript of your grades, documents that verify death or TSGLI eligibility, as well as the DD214 or DD1300 Form.

#6 – Dolphin Scholarship Fund

Amount: $1,500, $2,600, or $4,000

The Dolphin Scholarship Fund is provided each year to unmarried children or stepchildren of the US Navy Submarine Force. Children must be under the age of 24 and considered dependent to active duty members of the Navy. A total of 115 awards are granted each year.

The financial award is renewable and based on academic proficiency, need for financial assistance, as well as a commitment to extra-curricular activities in or outside school.

#7 – Freedom Alliance

To help those who have sacrificed for our country, Freedom Alliance is accepting applications from college-age children of military heroes for the 2022-2023 school year.

Students are eligible if they are the dependent child of a U.S. Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, or Guardsman who was killed or permanently disabled (100 percent VA disability rating) in a combat mission or training accident.

To date, Freedom Alliance has provided more than $20 million worth of college scholarships to children with a parent wounded or killed while defending our country.

The top five areas of study among scholarship students are nursing, psychology, biology, business, and mechanical engineering – it’s an incredible program that has helped so many who otherwise may not have been able to continue their education after high school.

4 Scholarships For Military Spouses

In addition to children of military personnel, there are a variety of scholarships specifically reserved for spouses. Some scholarships are open to both spouses and children (posted above), while others are restricted to spouses.

#1 –  Hope for the Warriors Spouse/Caregiver Scholarship

The Hope for the Warriors Spouse/Caregiver scholarship was created to provide varying amounts to military spouses and caregivers for their strength and resolve despite adversity.

This scholarship is for the spouses of disabled post-9/11 service members that have sustained a combat injury or are 100% VA rated disbled.

The financial assistance for continuing education is supported at accredited U.S. institutions. There are a number of different scholarships offered under the Warriors Spouse/Caregiver program including the New Beginnings Scholarship, Restoring Family Scholarship, Restoring Hope Scholarship, and Honorary Scholarship.

#2 – Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship

Amount: $500 to $1,000

The Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship is sponsored by the National Military Family Association. It awards up to $1,000 to spouses of all active duty, national guard, or reserve members. It also considers spouses of retired uniformed service members as well.

The scholarship is designed to provide funds for furthering education in vocational training or degree-seeking undergraduate programs.

How to apply:  The Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship will only consider online applications. In order to qualify, military spouses must provide a copy of their marriage certificate as well as a military verification document.

The deadline to apply is early February.

#3 – Military Spouse FINRA Fellowship Program

The Military Spouse Fellowship program is sponsored by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) Investor Education Foundation. The program produces a monthly stipend to military spouses that participate in a training program that makes them an Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC).

The training helps teach marketable job skills, knowledge, tools, and resources that help a military family overcome financial struggles.

How to apply:  The Military Spouse FINRA Fellowship Program is a little different from other scholarships listed in this article since it deals with certification training as opposed to receiving a vocational or undergraduate degree. Please check with a qualifying AFC certificate program for more information.

#4 – Wings Over America Foundation Scholarship

Amount: $5,000

The Wings Over American Foundation scholarship was created to provide financial relief for spouses as well as dependent children of U.S. Navy Aviation personnel that are on active duty, retired, honorably discharged, or deceased.

Awardees are selected based on scholastic merit, financial need, and community service involvement. The mission of the scholarship fund is to help spouses and children of military personnel to pursue educational dreams and ambitions.

How to apply: Scholarships are awarded to 50 individuals each year. It is funded solely through generous contributions. The money is applicable to use at community colleges, trade and technical schools, as well as traditional college scholarships.

Spouses must be enrolled or plan to enroll as full or part-time students with a load of at least 6 credit hours a semester. The service member must have served at least 8 years in the Navy unless they perished on duty while serving in a Navy Aviation capacity.

4 Scholarships For Military Veterans

Veterans deserve to receive numerous benefits when they return from duty. One way to help veterans adjust back to society is to provide funds for new educational opportunities. Thankfully, there are many scholarships that exist for the brave men and women that have retired from military service.

#1 – AFCEA War Veterans Scholarship

Amount: $2,500

The War Veterans Scholarship is awarded by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA). It provides financial relief to active duty uniformed military service members as well as honorably discharged veterans that served in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

The scholarship is open twice a year and provides merit-based scholarships of $2,500.

How to apply: The primary stipulation is the veteran must be enrolled in an accredited STEM-related degree program at an accredited 4-year college or university.

Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens, a sophomore or junior at the time of application, have either part-time or full-time status at a four-year university, have served in Afghanistan and/or Iraq War, and have an overall GPA of 3.0.

Additionally, you must provide proof that you served in the form of a DD214 or Certificate of Service.

Lastly, you must be majoring in any one of the following related degree programs:

Biometry/Biometrics, Computer Engineering, Computer Forensics Science, Computer Programming, Computer Science, Computer Systems, Cybersecurity, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geospatial Science, Information Science, Information Technology, Information Resource Management, Intelligence, Mathematics, Network Engineering, Network Security, Operations, Research, Physics, Robotics Engineering, Robotics Technology, Statistics, Strategic Intelligence, and Telecommunications Engineering.

Brainstorming

Before writing your essays, reflect on your unique experiences, identities, interests, goals, and values. Write a list that you can refer to as you draft various essays. 

Due Diligence

Read through ALL of the instructions the application gives so that you don’t miss anything. Create a checklist of everything to include in the essay. Is there a specific word limit? Stick to it. Do they ask you to answer four different questions? Underline where you answer each question in your draft to make sure you have clearly responded to their specific asks.

Devil is in the Details

Do you know what I mean when I say that I am hard working and organized? Sure, vaguely. How about if I say that I set up daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly schedules on a calendar synced to all my devices to stay on track with specific projects? The more specific you can be about yourself, the better. Instead of saying “I learned so much from _______ experience,” tell your reader what specifically you learned. 

Unlike other essays you may write in college, scholarship essays are the place to get personal. Use “I” and talk about yourself. The resume lists all of the things you have accomplished; the essay shows who you are and why the reader would want to have coffee with you (or give you a lot of money).

Giving specifics will help bring the story to life. While you do this, try to avoid clichés—what did you specifically feel? What did you learn: the good, the bad, and the ugly? Authenticity in storytelling goes a long way, and the folks reading your essay will appreciate the time you took to convey your experiences with nuance. This leads to the next to-do…

Storytelling

Show your reader your experiences by telling them a story. Stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end, and so should your essay. Start your essay with “the good stuff”—grab your reader’s attention right away so they keep reading. Remember, they have a pile of these on their desks or in their inboxes. Like any essay, your scholarship essay should have a thesis statement to which you connect all of your ideas. Think of this as your one-sentence answer to the essay question. The rest of your essay supports and elaborates on that point with transitions between each body paragraph. In the end, rather than restating your original thesis, give your reader a “So What?”: why this essay matters. Why did they read about your love for your local taco truck and its place in the community for three pages? A take-home message will leave your reader with something to chew on long after they have finished reading.

Connect the Dots

Read the scholarship program’s mission and what they are looking for in an applicant. Circle key words and phrases. Connect your essay or personal statement back to these specific goals and values so the reader knows exactly how you fit in with their program. Your essay should demonstrate how you would specifically benefit from and contribute to the program and its mission. Using their key words and phrases in your thesis statement is a great way to show how you are the best choice for their funding. 

Start Early and Revise

Writing scholarship essays is a tough business. You will want time in between writing a draft and submitting it to read through, not only for spelling and grammar issues (which matter a lot!), but to ensure that you are addressing that program’s goals and answering the questions they pose. Your essay may make perfect sense to you, but a reader might need clarification or more information to understand your ideas. Make an appointment to take your first draft to the University Writing Center or ask someone you trust to ask clarifying questions to read through it for you. Then, revise with their questions in mind.

As part of our commitment to military veterans, Google established the Google SVA Scholarship in partnership with Student Veterans of America . The scholarship provides assistance to student veterans who are pursuing university degrees in the field of computer science in the U.S. Selected students will receive 10,000 USD for the 2024-2025 school year.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate at a college or university
• Intend to be enrolled in or accepted as a full-time student at a university in the United States for the 2024-2025 academic year
• Maintain a strong academic performance
• Pursuing a computer science or computer engineering degree, or a degree in a closely related technical field
• A current student veteran (includes members of the National Guard or Reserve) as proven by a DD-214 and transcript, or a student on Active Duty as proven by submission of Active Duty orders and a Memorandum of Understanding from your commanding officer indicating that you are currently in good standing with your unit and transcript
• Has received an honorable discharge, or is in good standing with his/her branch of service

You will be asked to complete an online application through Student Veterans of America which includes:

• General background information (e.g. contact information and details about your current and intended universities)
• Academic transcripts from your current and prior institutions (if you have earned a prior degree)

There are currently 1.4 million active-duty service members in the United States and 2.28 million retired service members. 

If you are the child of a service member, there are a host of scholarships specifically geared toward you. These scholarships can help you cut down on college costs so you can graduate college with less debt to worry about. We’ve compiled a list of the 10 best scholarships for military children, including all application requirements and deadlines. With some options laid out, you’ll have a better idea of which scholarships you want to apply for and can begin making a plan for submitting your applications on time.

9 Scholarships for Military Children

1. marine gunnery sergeant john david fry scholarship (fry scholarship).

Amount: Full tuition at in-state public universities or up to $22,805.34 at private, foreign, or out-of-state schools. 

Deadline: After you have committed to a university but before matriculation.

Eligibility: If your parent died in the line of duty during or after September 11, 2001. Applicants must be between 18-33 years old.

Application Requirements: Choose the school you wish to attend on the Veterans Affairs website to see what benefits you will receive. Then, fill out an eligibility form online that requires your:

• Social Security number
• Social Security number of your sponsor
• Bank account information
• Educational history

You will receive a decision within 30 days. 

The Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship was established in memory of Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry who died in the line of duty in 2006. This scholarship covers tuition and offers a stipend for housing and textbooks for the children and spouses of service members who have died in the line of duty. Tuition and benefits are dependent on the specific university of the applicant’s choice.

2. AMVETS Scholarships

Amount: $4,000

Deadline: The application opens annually on January 20 and closes on April 30.

Eligibility: 

• Child or grandchild of a veteran, active duty member, or Guard/Reserves with honorable discharge papers.
• U.S. citizen
• High school senior with financial need
• Minimum GPA of 3.0

Application Requirements: 

• 1 essay between 350-400 words
• ACT/SAT scores
• Transcript 
• Student Aid Report (SAR) from the FAFSA
• Acceptance letter from the school you will be attending

The AMVETS Scholarship provides supplementary financial assistance to veterans, their spouses, children, and grandchildren after all federal and state means have been used. Six students receive the scholarship annually.

3. The 9/11 Promise Scholarship

Amount: Between $5,000-15,000. The award can be used for any academic expenses.

Deadline: The application opens November 1 and closes March 15.

• Students who have lost a parent who was a first responder or military service member, or whose parents have become disabled and are unable to work.
• Under the age of 25
• High school senior
• Minimum GPA of 2.0
• Planning on attending a trade school or accredited college

Application Requirements:

• Two letters of recommendation
• Proof of dependency
• Official notice of death of family member
• Paperwork defining the eligible family member as a first responder or military service member.

The 9/11 Promise Scholarship was established in 2019 with the goal of helping students whose parents have become injured or died in service. 9/11 Promise started out as a marathon and bike trip beginning at the Pentagon and ending at Ground Zero in New York City to remember the victims of 9/11. Today, the organization also provides scholarships for students.

4. Folds of Honor Scholarship

Amount: Up to $5,000 per year for approved college expenses.

Deadline: The application opens February 1 and closes March 31.

• Child of a fallen or disabled veteran
• Parent must have at least a 10% combined service-connected evaluation from the Veterans Administration
• Attending an accredited college or university
• Demonstrate an unmet financial need
• Minimum GPA of 2.0 for the last year of high school
• Proof of service paperwork from parent
• Proof of service member’s disability

Folds of Honor was established in 2007 to help the families of military service members who have died or become injured during their service. The organization provides funding for children and for those pursuing higher education as well.

5. Fisher House Foundation Scholarship

Amount: $2,000 for a maximum of 4 years

Deadline: February 17

Eligibility:

• Children of active or retired service members with a valid I.D.
• Planning on enrolling in a 4-year program or community college that allows transfer to 4-year programs
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 for high school applicants 
• Minimum GPA of 2.5 for college applicants 
• 500-word essay
• Extracurricular and/or volunteer activities preferred 

The Fisher House scholarship was developed to aid the educational goals of military children. 500 grants of $2,000 are offered each year. Fisher House is an organization that builds homes near VA and military medical centers so that families have a place to stay when they visit a loved one in a hospital.

6. Children of Warriors National Presidents’ Scholarship

Amount: $5,000

Deadline: March 1

• Children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren of veterans between April 6, 1917-November 11, 1918 or anytime after December 7, 1941.
• High school senior or accredited college student
• 50 hours of volunteer service throughout high school
• Four letters of recommendation are required
• Application questions
• 3 essays, no more than 1,000 words
• Letter from volunteer organization certifying 50 hours of community service
• Copy of the FAFSA
• Description of parent or grandparent’s military service

The American Legion Auxiliary was founded in 1919 in order to promote patriotism and provide support for veterans and their families. The organization sponsors several different scholarships for veterans and families in different stages of their lives, including children, college students, and non-traditional students. This scholarship is awarded to 15 students each year.

7. Bonsai Finance Veteran’s Scholarship

Amount: $1,000

Deadline: September 30

• Have served in the military or are a dependent of a military member
• Not yet have a bachelor’s degree

The Bonsai Finance Veteran’s Scholarship celebrates high-achieving veteran and dependent students. The scholarship provides a one-time payment of $1,000 for current or future education costs. Bonsai Finance is a veteran-owned company.

8. Military Commanders Scholarship Fund

Deadline: Only the first 100 applications are considered with a final deadline of February 16. 

• Dependents of active-duty or retired military service members
• Minimum GPA of 3.5 
• Parent DD214 form
• Support of Service form

The Military Commanders Scholarship Fund has awarded over $660,000 to children of active and retired military service members. The scholarship itself is administered by Scholarship America and assists children of select active duty, reserve, National Guard or retired members of the United States military who plan to continue post-secondary education.

9. Fleet Reserve Association Scholarship  

Amount: Up to $5,000

Deadline: Opens September 1 and closes April 15.

• Child of an active duty or retired military service member affiliated with the Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, or Coast Guard.
• Matriculating into a university for full-time study
• List of all extracurricular activities and work experience
• 2 recommendation letters
• Application requiring family financial information

The Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) provides funding for military service dependents, and several different scholarships exist depending on eligibility. FRA’s mission is to help service members of the Marine Corps, U.S. Navy, and Coast Guard as well as their families achieve higher education degrees.

1. Prepare Early

Many of the scholarships listed above like the Children of Warriors National Presidents Scholarship require significant background information as well as recommendation letters and essays. We recommend you gather all materials you need well in advance of deadlines. Additionally, some scholarships like the Military Commanders Scholarship Fund are awarded to the first students that apply, so be sure to look into the details of each process.

2. Be Genuine

If you have to write essays in your application, do your best to tell your story in an authentic way. Don’t write what you think someone else will want to hear — instead, write what is genuine and true. Remember, scholarship committees are typically made up of a diverse panel of readers who want to get to know their applicants.

3. Pick Solid Recommenders 

When picking a recommender, try to pick someone who knows you both personally and professionally. If you’re picking a teacher, don’t just pick a teacher whose class you did well in. Pick someone who can also talk about your character as a student, not just the grade you received in a class. 

4. Create a Resume

It might be hard for you to remember every single activity that you’ve participated in, especially if you need to write about your extracurricular activities. Creating a brief resume before starting your application can help you remember the various activities you’ve been involved in throughout the year. This can help you brainstorm essay topics as well.

5. Show Impact 

In your application, make sure to “show, don’t tell.” For your essays, use vivid descriptions and specific examples from your experiences to bring your story to life. If you have to list extracurricular activities, don’t just describe them. Instead, tell the committee why they are significant and what impact your involvement had on other people, your community, etc.

The Citadel’s Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships provides support for Veteran scholarships that provide assistance for tuition and more. Visit the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships website for more information.

Blue Ribbon Program

The Citadel is proud to offer up to 25 tuition grants to Active Duty service members that are enrolled in one of The Citadel’s online undergraduate programs. There are an additional 25 tuition grants for Active Duty enrolled in one of The Citadel’s online Graduate Degree programs. Blue Ribbon Program for Active Duty  

Yellow Ribbon Program

The Yellow Ribbon Program that was established by the Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008.  Yellow Ribbon allows institutions of higher learning (degree granting) to voluntarily enter into an agreement with the Department of Veterans Affairs to fund tuition and fee expenses that exceed the public in-state tuition and fee amounts payable under the Post-9/11 GI Bill®. 

Students who have been declared by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as maximum benefit rate (100%) and have entitlement under the Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) benefit are eligible to apply for the Yellow Ribbon Program contribution.  Under the Yellow Ribbon Program agreement, The Citadel offers $7500 a year to 10 undergraduate students, $3000 a year for graduate students. This selection is on a first come, first serve basis and students who are classified as out-of-state residency.

The application is for nonresident students who have been accepted to The Citadel. Under the Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-315), any student who is entitled to and receiving Post-9/11 Benefits is entitled to be charged the in-state tuition rate at a public university or college. South Carolina Free Tuition

Provides for free tuition to the children of certain war veterans attending South Carolina state supported colleges and universities, as well as state supported technical education institutions. Certain residency requirements apply. For questions or to apply contact 803.647.2434.

External Scholarships

The scholarships below are provided by external organizations, please contact the organization providing the scholarship if you have any questions or need additional information.

Award: $2,500

The AFCEA Educational Foundation is dedicated to providing academic support to U.S. military personnel. The AFCEA NOVA chapter has partnered with the AFCEA Educational Foundation to make these awards possible.

Merit-based scholarships of $2,500 will be awarded to: 

• Persons on active duty in the uniformed military services
• Honorably discharged U.S. military veterans (including Reservists and National Guard personnel) who deployed abroad in support of one of the Overseas Contingency Operations (Operation Enduring Freedom; Operation Iraqi Freedom; Operation New Dawn; Operation Inherent Resolve; Operation Freedom’s Sentinel).
• Recipients must be currently enrolled and attending classes in an undergraduate program part time or full time in an eligible STEM major degree program at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States (see eligibility section paragraph 4 for list of acceptable STEM majors).

Distance learning or online programs affiliated with a major U.S. institution are eligible.

Scholarship awards are subject to availability of funding. Scholarship awards are restricted to tuition and course-related expenses, such as fees, books, supplies and equipment that are required for the courses at the university.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

• U.S. citizen currently enrolled and attending a four-year accredited college or university in the United States as a sophomore or junior at the time of application. Freshman and senior level students are ineligible to apply. You cannot apply the year you are graduating.
• Enrolled part time or full time in an eligible undergraduate degree program.
• Have an overall 3.0 GPA.
• Candidates must be majoring in the following C4I-related fields related to the mission of AFCEA:  astronomy, biometry/biometrics, computer engineering, computer forensics science, computer programming, computer science, computer systems, cybersecurity, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, geospatial science, industrial engineering, information science, information technology, information resource management, intelligence, mathematics, mechanical engineering, network engineering, network security, operations, research, physics, robotics engineering, robotics technology, statistics, strategic intelligence and telecommunications engineering.
• Served in Overseas Contingency Operations (from 2003 to present) – provide DD214 or Certificate of Service. Paperwork must verify deployment. Remove SSN.

War Veteran Teacher Certification Program

• Students actively pursuing a credential/licensure for the purpose of teaching science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) subjects at a U.S. elementary, middle/intermediate and high schools are eligible. Current credential and licensure students must have completed a bachelor’s of science degree. Expected graduation/completion date cannot be in the year the scholarship is awarded.

Application Process

In addition to the online application, other required documents include:

• Current official transcript(s) issued by the school registrar’s office reflecting ALL undergraduate-level study
• At least two letters of recommendation from field-of-study professors. If that is not possible, we will accept recommendations from commanding officers/employers in the related field of study.
• DD214 or current service paperwork showing OCO service. Do not submit with SSN.

The AMF conducts scholarship programs to financially assist the undergraduate studies of eligible dependents of military personnel. AMF/CMSAF/AFSA scholarships are valued from $1,000 to $5,000 to students age 23 or younger attending an accredited academic institution.

• Unmarried child/adopted or stepchild of active duty, retired or veteran member of USAF, ANG or AFRC. No Officer dependents!
• Must be age 23 years or younger and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher
• 12th-year high school student or full-time college undergraduate student
• Enrolled/accepted to an accredited college/university
• No membership requirements on the part of the applicant or sponsor
• Applicant must be dependent upon their parent or guardian for over 1/2 of his/her support
• Applications for the upcoming academic year are available between January 1 and MARCH 31.

AMERICAN LEGION LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP

Award: $20,000 for dependents of the fallen; $5,000 for dependents of disabled veterans for undergrad and grad school

The American Legion Legacy Scholarship is a needs-based scholarship designed to fulfill a financial gap remaining after all federal and state educational grants/scholarships available to an eligible applicant have been utilized.

Children of U.S. military members who died while on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001.

Children of post-9/11 veterans having been assigned a combined disability rating of 50 percent or greater by the Department of Veterans Affairs also qualify.

Children of fallen post-9/11 servicemembers:

• Child/children or legally adopted child/children or the child of a spouse by prior marriage or dependent child as defined by the United States Armed Services of active duty United States military and National Guard and military reservists, who were federalized and died on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001

Children of post-9/11 veterans VA-rated 50% or higher disabled

• Child/children or legally adopted child/children or the child of a spouse by prior marriage or dependent child as defined by the United States Armed Services of active duty United States military and National Guard and military reservists, who were federalized and received an injury while on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001 leading to a Department of Veteran Affairs disability rating of 50 percent or higher

Application Process:

• Official (Form DD1300) military death certificate
• FAFSA Summary showing Expected Family Contribution
• If applicable, any award notifications from federal or state veteran benefits programs (for example, The Gunnery Sergeant Fry Scholarship, GI-Bill benefits, etc.)
• Financial Aid Package notification from their prospective/current institution of higher education for the upcoming school year
• Breakdown of all education-related expenses to include but not limited to tuition, fees, books, program costs, meal plan, housing and transportation
• High school senior or high school graduate currently accepted or attending an accredited institution of higher education within the United States
• Official disability rating paperwork from VA
• If applicable, any award notifications from federal or state veteran benefits programs (for example, GI-Bill benefits, etc.)
• DD214 showing dates of service and condition of discharge

ARMY WOMEN’S FOUNDATION LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP

Award: Varies

The Army Women’s Foundation (AWF) recognizes the importance of education and the role it plays in personal, professional, and economic fulfillment. The Army Women’s Foundation Legacy Scholarship Program provides grants to women soldiers, past and present, and their lineal descendants to help them attain their educational goals. The AWF Legacy Scholarship Program offers financial support in four areas: Certificate Programs, Community College coursework, Undergraduate Degrees, and Graduate Degrees. Scholarships are awarded only for coursework from accredited institutions. Scholarships are based on merit, academic potential, personal essay, community service, letters of recommendation, and financial need.

• Certificate Programs and Community College coursework scholarships are awarded for $1,000.
• Undergraduate and Graduate Degree Program scholarships are awarded in the amounts of $2,500 and $3,000.
• Applicant must be a woman who has served or is serving honorably in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard or the lineal descendant of a woman who has served or is serving honorably in the U.S. Army, U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard . Eligibility requirements are non-negotiable, and appropriate evidence of Army service must be provided (e.g. DD214, discharge papers, letter from commander, etc.)
• Certificate Program AWF Legacy Scholarships: Applicant must be a high school graduate with a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) or GED and must be currently enrolled in or accepted into an accredited certificate granting institution.
• Community College AWF Legacy Scholarships: Applicant must be a high school graduate with a 2.5 Grade Point Average (GPA) or GED and must be currently accepted into or enrolled in an accredited community college.
• Undergraduate AWF Legacy Scholarships: Applicant must be currently enrolled at or accepted into an accredited college or university and have completed 30 credit hours of course work with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. Credit hours must be completed prior to application deadline.

The Berkman Foundation was founded by Harold W. This scholarship has been established to honor Col. Kathleen Swacina, USA (Ret.), and her accomplishments throughout her career and her affiliation with AFCEA. The Col. Kathleen Swacina Scholarship is funded by the generous donation provided by Col. Kathleen Swacina and Lt. Col. Daniel Swacina, USA (Ret.). This scholarship will recognize one outstanding female college student who has shown the potential to excel in college studies in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and attends college full-time.

The Col. Kathleen Swacina Scholarship Fund awards one female college student a $1,500 scholarship to be applied toward the student’s ongoing higher-level academic education at an accredited four-year school. Community college students in their first two years are eligible if they will continue on to an accredited four-year college or university.

• Must be a member of the U.S. armed forces or enrolled in a ROTC program; an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. armed forces; or a direct descendant of an AFCEA member or an honorably discharged member of the armed forces.
• Must be enrolled as a full-time college/university student at an accredited institution attending schools in or residing in the states of Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida and Alabama, including community colleges.

• Students must maintain an overall 2.8 GPA.

The Caccomo Memorial Scholarship is in memory and honoring Dr. Aurelio M. Caccomo, who immigrated from Rome to the United States in the 1950’s and became a physician, orthopedic surgeon, and Army Reservist. He served his adopted country in the Special Forces and retired as a Colonel. Dr. Caccomo spent the last fifteen year of his life serving at the University of Illinois in Chicago under the Department of Orthopedics and establishing his Family Foundation, which provides these meaningful and impactful scholarships for our veterans.

• Two (2) scholarships of $12,000 awarded annually.
• Must be a United States veteran or member of the National Guard or Reserves.

Mercer Scholarship

• Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard personnel, their spouses and dependent biological, step or adoptive children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren.

Individual Contributions Scholarship

• Students may apply for Foundation scholarships if they are affiliated with the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard through their own service or that of a spouse, parent, grandparent or great-grandparent. FRA members in good standing, their spouses, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren are eligible for a wider range of Foundation scholarships. Scholarship recipients must be U.S. citizens and full-time students at an accredited U.S. trade school, community college, college or university.

The Freedom Alliance Scholarship fund is for the children of military personnel who have been killed or permanently disabled in an combat mission or training accident.

The dependent son or daughter of a U.S. Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Guardsman or Marine who has:

• Been killed in action.
• Become 100% total & permanently disabled as a direct result of a combat mission, with priority given to those who have a single combat-related disability rated at 70% or more. This does not apply to Servicemembers who are Silver Star or Purple Heart Medal recipients as they only need and combined 100% Total and Permanent disability rating. (Qualifying parent must have received an Honorable Discharge.)
• Suffered a major limb amputation due to enemy action
• Been classified as a Prisoner of War (POW) or Missing in Action (MIA).
• Been awarded the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Air Force Cross, or the Coast Guard Cross.
• Been involved in a training accident that resulted in the death of the service member or caused an immediate inability to continue serving (100% total and permanently disabled).

ALL APPLICANTS MUST ALSO MEET THE FOLLOWING ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR A FREEDOM ALLIANCE SCHOLARSHIP:

The General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant program, also known as the Hap Arnold Grant, is the centerpiece of AFAS education support. The application process for the Arnold Education Grant serves as the platform for other key education support opportunities at the Society.

The Hap Arnold Grant is competitive in its need-based selection criteria and is uniquely tailored to recognize the proper weighing of family income and education costs.

Grants ranging from $500 to $2,000 are awarded to eligible Air Force and Space Force dependents each year. The specific amount awarded correlates to a student’s particular level of financial need.

The Arnold Education Grant is available to applicants who fit one of the 3 following established criteria at time of application and throughout the award year:

• Dependent* sons and daughters of U.S. Air Force and Space Force members in one of the following categories:
• Active Duty, Title 10 Reservists on extended active duty, and Title 32 Guard performing full-time active duty. All members must be on active duty through December 1 of the academic year to be awarded
• Retired due to length of active duty service or disability, or retired AGR/Reserve with 20+ satisfactory service years creditable for retired pay and placed on the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force Reserve Retired List (no other retired classifications are considered eligible)
• Deceased while on active duty or in retired status

*For financial aid purposes, a “dependent” student is one who will not reach age 24 during the award year; will not be a graduate or professional student; will not be a veteran; will not be in legal guardianship; will not be an orphan or ward of the court; will not be married or have legal dependents other than a spouse.

*For a student applying as a stepchild of a sponsoring member to be considered a “dependent”, student must either reside with the sponsoring member, or sponsoring member must provide more than half of student’s financial support. Proof of support will be required.

• Spouses of active duty U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force members and Title 10 AGR/Reserve on extended active duty. Member’s active duty must extend through December 1 of the academic year to be awarded. To be eligible, a spouse must be legally married to the member (not separated or pending divorce) at the time of application and disbursement of award.
• Surviving spouses of U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force members who died while on active duty or in retired status

• Will be a high school graduate enrolled or accepted as a full-time undergraduate student in the upcoming academic year

Most Americans assume that the G.I. Bill guarantees U.S. Armed Forces personnel access to free post-secondary education. They are surprised to learn that active duty personnel, reservists, and Veterans have had to take out student loans to pay for higher education.

Shortfalls in the new Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, lingering exclusions from the old Montgomery G.I. Bill, and educational debt acquired prior to service compromise the lives of thousands. Retroactive Scholarship

Leave No Veteran Behind addresses Veteran student debt head on with its Retroactive Scholarship Program. Like most scholarships this Leave No Veteran Behind Program is highly sought. Hundreds of qualified Veterans apply each year, but only a handful are awarded annually based on need and available funds. Unlike most scholarships, this award is given after higher education has been completed and student loans have been made because the Veteran was not covered under existing educational programs. Each year, the Leave No Veteran Behind Scholarship Committee selects Veteran recipients. Recipients get their student loan accounts paid off in full. Veterans  must have completed  some form of higher education, suffer from  economic hardship , and have student loans because they were  not fully covered  by existing educational programs. In return,  all awardees commit to 100-400 hours of community service  that leverages their military skills, civilian education, and lack of indebtedness to help solve the most pressing issues facing their communities.

The Maj. Gen. James Ursano Scholarship Program is based on applicants’ financial needs and was established to assist Children of Soldiers in obtaining their first undergraduate degrees. Applicants may receive assistance for up to four academic years but must meet eligibility criteria and reapply each year.

• Student must be a dependent of a Soldier on federal active duty, a retired Soldier, or a deceased active or deceased retired Soldier. Children of National Guard/Reserve Soldiers are eligible if the Soldier is on Title 10 Orders for the entire academic year.
• Student must be registered as a dependent of the Soldier in DEERS (Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System).
• Student must be under the age of 24 (eligibility ends at the end of the semester/term in which the student reaches their 24th birthday. Example – turning 24 in December would mean the scholarship would be awarded for fall term ONLY.)
• Student must remain unmarried for the entire academic year.
• Student must not be a member of the National Guard, Reserves, or other military branch.
• Student must be enrolled, accepted, or pending acceptance as a full-time student in an accredited post-secondary or vocational institution listed in the US Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions (http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/Search.aspx). Because financial need is already met, students attending Military Service Academies are not eligible.
• Student must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

The Financial Aid Office at each school will determine the recipient’s final eligibility based on the student’s complete financial aid package. No student can receive funding above the school’s established Cost of Attendance – once all costs are covered, the school must return any remaining funds to AER.

The Mrs. Patty Shinseki Spouse Scholarship Program provides Spouses of active duty or retired Soldiers, and widows(ers) of Soldiers who died either on active duty or in a retired status, with financial assistance to pursue their first undergraduate college degree. Spouses of National Guard/Reserve Soldiers activated on Title 10 Orders are also eligible. Spouses of Soldiers who have separated from the Army without retiring are not eligible.

Student must be a dependent Spouse and registered as the Spouse of the Soldier in DEERS (Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System).

• Enrolled and registered as a full-time student for the entire year (Aug-May) at the same institution and pursuing an undergraduate or master’s degree at a post-secondary, technical, or vocational institution that is:
• Located in the United States and accredited by a regional/national accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education
• A participant in the U.S. Department of Education Title IV Financial Aid Programs
• Have a cumulative 2.0 (or higher) GPA on a 4.0 grade scale

Eligibility Requirements:

• U.S. Citizen (or permanent resident).
• Enrolled (or enrolling) as a full time student of an accredited college/university within the United States for completion of an undergraduate degree in Logistics or equivalent field.
• Limit of one (1) entry per contestant.
• An honorably discharged veteran or current member of the active military (including National Guard and Reserves).
• A spouse of a current military service member or honorably discharged veteran.
• A child (under age 21 or full-time student under age 23) of a current military service member or honorably discharged veteran.
• Employees, professional affiliates, and agents of North American Van Lines (and their immediate families) are not eligible.
• It does not exceed your expenses;
• It is not designated or earmarked for other purposes (such as room and board), and does not require (by its terms) that it cannot be used for qualified education expense; and
• It does not represent payment for teaching, research, or other services required as a condition for receiving the scholarship.
• Attend a primary or secondary school or are pursuing a degree at a college or university, or
• Provides a program that is acceptable for full credit toward a bachelor’s or higher degree, or offers a program of training to prepare students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation; and
• Is authorized under federal or state law to provide such a program and is accredited by a nationally recognized accreditation agency
• Eligible educational institution. An eligible educational institution is one whose primary function is the presentation of formal instruction and that normally maintains a regular faculty and curriculum and normally has a regularly enrolled body of students in attendance at the place where it carries on its educational activities. 
• Tuition and fees required to enroll at or attend an eligible educational institution; and
• Course-related expenses, such as fees, books, supplies, and equipment that are required for the courses at the eligible educational institution. These items must be required of all students in your course of instruction.
• Room and board, Travel, Research, Clerical help, or  Equipment and other expenses that are not required for enrollment in or attendance at an eligible educational institution.
• Complete all required sections of our application form below.
• Applicants must submit a copy of their DD214 (member 4) or a signed letter from Command certifying active duty status.
• Be sure to attach the following documents to your application form:
• Submit a brief essay of between 400 and 800 words, detailing why a career in logistics/supply chain management is your college major of choice. A personalized tone, referencing sincere firsthand experience and sentiment, is best—no need to be too formal. We want to know why you truly believe in logistics as the best career path for you!
• Total award – $1,000; Number of awards given – 2.
• Maximum award – $1,000 per winner.
• Award amount will be made out to your school in the form of a check, and mailed to your personal address.
• Winners will be notified via email, and on our official Logistics Scholarship homepage at (NorthAmerican.com/Scholarship/LogisticsEdu).

Award: $10,000

Student Veterans of America and Raytheon Missiles and Defense (RMD) have partnered to provide two (2) $10,000 scholarships to student veterans demonstrating a commitment to and passion for their chosen field of study, as well as demonstrated leadership and engagement within their community. The Patriot Scholarship is offered exclusively to U.S. Army veterans, and is named after RMD’s Patriot Air and Missile Defense System.

Army student veterans pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited four-year college or university may apply with the following qualifications:

• A U.S. Army veteran
• Entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year of undergraduate study, or be enrolled in a graduate program for the current academic year
• Attending full-time at an accredited four-year college or university in the U.S.
• Demonstrate a commitment to and passion for their chosen field of study
• Demonstrate leadership and engagement in their community
• Be a current student veteran (includes members of the National Guard or Reserve), as demonstrated by a DD 214 (Member – Copy 4) and current transcript
• Have received an honorable discharge; must be a veteran in good standing
• Your application should include your transcripts and a 1-2-minute video that captures the following information:
• Tell us about your background, why did you join the military, and if applicable what is your experience using the Patriot system during your service.
• What are you studying now and what do you want to do with your career?

The Raytheon Missiles & Defense SPY-6 Scholarship, named for the U.S. Navy’s SPY-6 Family of Radars, provides returning sailors an opportunity to achieve educational goals and position themselves for success in civilian professions. Two $10,000 scholarships will be awarded to sailors who pursue an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited university and demonstrate leadership in their local community.

• Student veterans must meet the following criteria to apply for the Raytheon Missiles & Defense SPY-6 Scholarship:
• Navy/Navy Reserve Veteran
• Be a current student veteran, as demonstrated by a current transcript
• Entering your sophomore, junior, or senior year of undergraduate study, or be enrolled in a graduate program for the academic year

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MILITARY CHILDREN: FISHER HOUSE

Award: $2,000

The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created to recognize the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military family community.

Five hundred (500) scholarship grants, each for $2,000, will be awarded for the academic school year 2023-2024. There is at least one recipient selected at every commissary location where qualified applications are received. Additional recipients are chosen on a prorated basis. Therefore, more applicants may be selected from those commissaries with more significant numbers of applicants.

• Only students with valid Uniformed Services Identification (USID) card may apply for a scholarship. In addition, a student’s parent(s) must be one of the following: active duty, reserve/guard, deceased, or retired from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, or Space Force.
• Must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree or a community/junior college designed to allow for a direct transfer into a four-year program.
• High school applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 basis).
• College applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. College freshmen must submit a first-semester college transcript.
• Applicants or sponsors do not need to live at an installation with a commissary – simply select the commissary where you shop or the one nearest to you.
• Write a short 500-word essay – the essay topic will be announced when the scholarship opens.
• Submit transcripts
• High school applicants – transcript indicating a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale (unweighted)
• College applicants – transcript indicating a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale (unweighted)
• You must validate your eligibility as a military dependent by entering the benefits number found on the reverse of the Uniformed Services Identification (USID) card. If you qualify for an ID card but do not have one, immediately schedule a visit to a military personnel office with the proper documentation.

The VFW’s “Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship” provides service members and veterans with the financial assistance they need to complete their educational goals without incurring excessive student loan debt. It’s just another way for us to say “thank you” to those who fought for our freedoms.   

• Fall semester scholarships will be awarded in August, and spring semester scholarships will be awarded in January.
• Scholarships must be used by the end of the school semester for which the veteran is applying or they will become null and void.
• Scholarships are restricted for tuition and fees only and will be paid directly to accredited schools.
• Be a citizen of the United States.
• Be retired, honorably discharged, active duty, or a member of the National Guard or Reserve.
• Have completed Basic Training and follow-on training (Advanced Individual Training, technical school, etc.).
• Separated with or currently hold a military rank of E-5 or below.
• Demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
• Participate in, be accepted to or currently enrolled in a VA-approved program or school at an accredited post-secondary institution.

VFW Crowns 2023 National Youth Scholarship Winners

Tennessee high school sophomore takes home first place $35,000 scholarship.

WASHINGTON – Tonight, during the 76th annual Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Parade of Winners ceremony, the organization proudly presented more than $171,000 in scholarships and awards as it named the national winners of its 2023 Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen youth scholarship competitions.

Sponsored by Twisted X, the Parade of Winners event featured the 53 national VFW Department (state) winners, along with Twisted X CEO and president, Prasad Reddy.

Second place winner Siri Corson, a junior at Fillmore Central High School in Harmony, Minnesota, sponsored by VFW Post 6893 and its Auxiliary in Preston, Minnesota, was awarded the $21,000 Charles Kuralt Memorial Scholarship. Gina Wierzbowski, a senior at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, Massachusetts, sponsored by VFW Post 620 located in Stoneham, Massachusetts, was named the third place winner and awarded the $15,000 VFW Scholarship. Also featured during tonight’s awards ceremony was the 2023 Patriot’s Pen first place winner, Leighton Peters. Sponsored by VFW Post 2204 and its Auxiliary in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Peters was awarded the top Patriot’s Pen prize of $5,000. Watch as she delivered her winning essay  during this evening's ceremony on this year’s theme, “My Pledge to Our Veterans.”

The Patriot’s Pen second place winner, Nolan Green, sponsored by VFW Post 8731 in Monticello, Minnesota, will receive a $4,000 award, while third place winner Makayla Cole, sponsored by VFW Post 5675 and its Auxiliary in Odessa, Missouri, will receive a $3,500 award. Youth Scholarships

The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

Voice of Democracy

Established in 1947, our  Voice of Democracy  audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay.  Each year, nearly 25,000 ninth through 12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program. 

The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$21,000, and the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins at least a scholarship of $1,000. Before submitting your essay, download the  2024-2025 entry form here  and find your sponsoring  local VFW Post  as applications must be turned in by  midnight, Oct. 31 . 

The 2024-25 theme is:  "Is America Today Our Forefathers' Vision?"

Sophia Lin, a high school junior at BASIS Scottsdale in Scottsdale, Arizona, was named the 2023-2024 Voice of Democracy first place winner. Sophia's speech on the theme, "What Are the Greatest Attributes of Our Democracy?" won her a $35,000 college scholarship. Patriot's Pen

Each year, nearly 68,800 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s  Patriot’s Pen  youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of nearly $1 million in state and national awards. Each first place state winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000! 

The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Before submitting your essay,  download the 2024-2025 entry form here  and  find your sponsoring  local VFW Post  as applications must be turned in by  midnight, Oct. 31 . 

The 2024-25 theme is:  "My Voice in America's Democracy?"

Bryant Day, an eighth grade student from Ashland, Ohio, was named the 2023-2024 Patriot's Pen first place winner. His essay on the theme, "How Are You Inspired by America?" won the national first place $5,000 award. Bryant was sponsored by VFW Post 9943 and its Auxiliary in Mansfield, Ohio.
