50th Birthday Speech – Adult Child to Mother

A poignant speech dedicated to a caring mom. Could you customize this for your birthday party?

Tonight we celebrate the 50th birthday of a woman who’s been the light of all our lives for many years. She’s been a beacon for my brothers, my sisters, and me, and she’s always, always, always been there when we needed her.

Since her talents and kindness have touched us in such a special way, it seems only fitting to take the time to honor her with this party.

When I say talents, I’m referring to her culinary skills and the incredible pies she makes us. So good!

I’m also referring to her financial prowess and knowledge of tax law. Who needs Turbo Tax , when you have a mom like ours?

But as I said, Mom has always been there and when you live with someone, you really get to know them. You get to know their funny quirks like how they always double and triple-check that you remembered things like your books or your lunch before leaving the house for school in the morning.

In Mom’s case, she’d follow us down the street to make sure we had our things in hand. One time, one of our friends thought we were being stalked, but we assured them this was just how our Mom was.

Or how about the time I forgot my science project at home? She actually nearly pulled together a police escort to get the thing delivered to the school on time for the Science Fair. That was great, but all the other kids saw it and we didn’t hear the end of THAT for quite some time. I was always proud of her passion, even if some people thought it was a bit “obsessive.” (And I mean that in a good way, Mom!)

Another very cool thing was that Mom is/was also psychic. Whenever my sisters and I would come home just five minutes late, Mom would be standing inside the door as though she knew the exact moment we’d arrive. Sometimes we’d wonder if she’d been standing there all night! (My brother is nodding his head, yes. So maybe she really did hover near the door when we girls were on dates.)

I know all of these things make it seem that Mom was overly protective, but she really wasn’t. She was just very interested in her kids. In fact, she came to every one of our sports games, every school play, and every field trip. Of course, as a fantastic baker, she participated in every bake sale we had. It always kept her busy.

We are all so grateful for the love, the help, and the wonderful meals she made for us. Mom always took very good care of her family. Hopefully, this party will show her just how much we really love her.

Thank you, Mom! Love you!

50th Birthday Speech From Wife to Husband

This is a good idea if you want to give hubby a loving jab in the ribs and guests a good laugh…

He may be an old fart, but he’s still young at heart! I want to thank you all for being here. I’m going to use it … the ultimate “F” word: John’s turned fifty!! Even scarier is knowing I’m not far behind!

Though many years have passed, I can still remember every one I’ve spent with him like it was yesterday. He is truly one of a kind, and I am delivering this speech to honor him and the amazing memories he’s created that we cherish.

50 is a big number and I’ve been lucky to spend the last 30 of them with him:

  • 30 years and nothing has changed – except less hair and more love
  • 30 years to make the perfect butt indent in the couch
  • 30 year-long “honey-do” list … and I’m proud to say, it’s half done!
  • And we’ve had 30 years to grow more in love.

I can say the fishing tales continue as usual, but that fish that got away keeps getting bigger!

The “honey-do” list keeps getting longer.

And his ability to forget birthdays and anniversaries has never improved.

Even with all these quirks, he is still the most wonderful man, husband, and father. He can now add “wonderful grandfather” to that list, too!

He’s been teaching for 30 years and this passion will continue even after retirement with four grandchildren hanging on his every word.

He always makes us laugh – like the time he had that “big catch” of a fish that he attempted to reel in. He was concentrating so hard, he fell straight into the water! And after all that, including the wet clothes, he realized his big catch was a large tree stump!

He has always been the shoulder to bear the weight of my problems – ensuring that no matter what, his family and friends are happy.

Let’s take this night to celebrate John and all his amazing qualities, as well as the impact he has on our lives.

Raise your glasses and let’s toast to an amazing husband, loving father, caring grandfather, and great friend. And most of all … a precious gem we’re all grateful to have in our lives.

50th Birthday Speech for that Special Father

A very nice speech for Dad, whether you’re male or female.

First and foremost, Happy Birthday to the world’s greatest dad!

Thank you to everyone for joining me in celebrating my father’s 50th birthday. I hope you’re all enjoying the evening as much as we are.

When I think of my dad, I think of the person I look up to and always strive to be like. My dad has always made sure his loved ones were cared for (even if he wasn’t). He always made sure even in the roughest times, we kids never knew about or “felt” the struggles.

Like everyone else, my childhood was less than perfect, but dad always made the best of it and made it perfect for us.

Dad has always been known for his calm and soothing demeanor. A running joke is that dad has two speeds “slow” and “reverse.” He always takes every day one at a time and doesn’t sweat the small stuff. I swear dad will live to be 150 because he never stresses about anything.

If any of you have spent enough time with dad, you know what I mean when I say dad has an amazing sense of humor, though his jokes are, shall we say … different. But I admit, I laugh so hard I almost cry. The famous dad joke … wait for it…

What is orange and green and red all over?? A wounded cheezie hopping in the grass!

It goes without saying, but my dad means the world to me and I will always be daddy’s little girl!!

Hopefully, these 50th birthday speech samples give you some great ideas for your very own speech. Good luck and get creating!!

Toast Your Dad’s 50th Speeches

These are best for a son to use to toast his dad.

A Funny idea to toast your dad’s 50th

Dad, you’re always there when I need you.  You managed to make all my football games and only got thrown out once!  But don’t worry about that. That ref didn’t know what he was talking about. You weren’t swearing … you were just being … passionate!

Seriously, Dad, you’ve been a wonderful father all these years.  You’ve helped me through thick and thin and I’m not even referring to my recent weight loss! You’ve always given a kind word of support at just the right time and your encouragement has gotten me countless things in my life.

  • Like the time my science project blew up and you stayed up all night fixing it for me, so I’d have something to take to school the next day.
  • Or the time my girlfriend broke up with me and you took me out that entire weekend to get my mind off of it.

Yeah, sometimes you were more like a friend than a father.

  • Like that fishing trip where we tipped over in the boat and showed up at home soaking wet from head to toe.

Mom’s a good sport. She puts up with us both. Thanks, Mom!

Now that you’re 50, Dad, I don’t want you thinking you’re old. Even though your birthdate looks like something out of a history book, you’re not old at all. You can still play basketball better than me, although it does help that you’re 6 inches taller.

And as long as you have a nap you can stay up all night, just like me!  Some people might think you’re old, but not me. I know I can still count on you to go camping, even if we have to camp closer to the bathrooms now.

I know I tease and poke fun, but you really mean a lot to me…to all of us.  We hope you enjoy your party because we had a great time putting it together. We did it to show you how much we love you and to make sure you didn’t get depressed!

Here’s to Dad, everyone! [Raises glass]

A More Serious Idea to toast your dad’s 50th

Dad, we’ve gathered here tonight to honor you as an individual.  You are a special person to everyone in this room and too often, we don’t get around to telling you that. We hope you enjoy everything we’ve done for you here and take it in the spirit it was intended: a light-hearted expression of how we feel about you.

It’s also time to reflect and appreciate all the things you’ve accomplished in your life, including raising three great kids and making our mom so happy.  We all appreciate what you’ve done for us.

You’ve worked for 30 years at the same job, lost sleep over our teenage antics, and in the end, still liked us enough to help pay for our college education.

I don’t know where this family would be without you.  Who in the world is willing to put up this crazy family? You have one daughter who’s a rock musician, another daughter who’s a bookworm, and me, a nut for obscure computer programming languages.

With such a diverse interest base, it’s hard to figure out what any of us have in common, yet we all get along great! That is mostly due to you and your diplomatic ways. Not to mention your talent for conversation.

Anyway, Dad, this party is to thank you for everything and to let you know we appreciate you. Have a great time tonight and know that we love you!

50th Birthday Speech Writing Ideas

A 50th birthday party is a perfect time for a great speech to honor the birthday guest of honor. We’ve got all the tricks and tips you need to write great 50th birthday speeches. The best way to show how much you care about the birthday “girl/boy” is to write a speech to share at their birthday celebration. When you want to share best wishes, reminisce over past memories, and highlight the many years of the awesomeness of having them in your life, a birthday speech is a great way to do it. But what if you can’t find the right words to say what you want to say? I’ve got some great speech writing ideas to help you out.

These speeches can be:

  • Sentimental
  • A walk down memory lane
  • Stories of experiences you have had together
  • A tear-jerker

You can use lines like “From the bottom of my heart” when talking about a great friend or beautiful child. You could also work some 50th birthday poems into your speech and recite them for everyone.

Step by Step Guide to Birthday Speeches

  • Decide on what kind of birthday speech you want to present (from our list above or any other you can think of).
  • Brainstorm the main points you want to cover in this speech. Make some form of notes with these ideas.
  • Decide how long you want to talk. Keep in mind what kind of setting you will be in to give this 50th birthday speech. Remember one page would probably take about 3-5 minutes depending on how quickly you speak (You may speak more quickly when you’re nervous, so keep this in mind as you estimate the time.)
  • Decide if you need to write out your speech word for word, or if you can just use bullet points and “wing it” from there.
  • Get out the paper and start writing!
  • Practice! You want this to be perfect, so sit with a friend and practice – or a mirror can work too. Practice in your car and record yourself if you are not comfortable practicing with someone else.

Some other tips when writing birthday speeches:

  • If it’s shorter, you can always memorize it so you’re not holding paper while presenting.
  • If you are good on the spot, you can just improvise while you’re presenting and you won’t need to write it out.
  • Make the speech a keepsake. Write out your speech on fancy paper to give something tangible to the birthday person, which they will cherish.

With these easy steps, you can create the perfect 50th birthday speech.

50th Birthday Speech Writing Tips

Looking at a sample speech is a great way to help you get started on writing your own. Now that you have some great speech ideas and 50th birthday speech examples, let’s take a look at some speech writing tips to help you write your own. If someone special to you is celebrating a milestone birthday like the half-century mark, that deserves a very special speech. But don’t worry if you don’t know what to say, or if you get nervous about giving speeches because I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about it below.

How to write a 50th birthday speech

Do you need to write a 50th birthday speech, but don’t know where to start?

To help you do your part and create an awesome birthday celebration, I’ve created this helpful guide with tips and tricks for writing your perfect speech.

Writing a speech isn’t as difficult as you might think. The key is to break it down into easy-to-do steps and then do first things first. So, let’s do it, shall we?

First Step: Brainstorm

This is where you’ll decide on the theme and direction of your speech.  It’s a list of ideas you can add to as you go.  You’ll do this brainstorming step before anything else, then plug these ideas into the rest of the steps below.

So how do you do this?

Well, you’re going to write down all the important points you want to convey in this 50th birthday speech.

Ask yourself these questions and write them down.  If doing this brings to mind other things, by all means, include them as well:

  • Who is the speech for? (A spouse, parent, sibling, friend, or another relative?)
  • What style do you want to attain? (Funny, serious, inspirational, etc.)
  • And how long do you want your speech to be?  (Short and sweet, or more lengthy because you have a lot to say?)
  • What do you know about the person?  What are their notable characteristics? Do they have any charming personality quirks?  High life achievements? Admirable habits?
  • What is the funniest situation you’ve shared with that person?
  • What is the most serious situation you’ve shared with that person? (Also, you can list the most outrageous, touching, challenging, etc. Whatever stands out in your memories of them.)
  • If you had one chance to tell this person anything, what would it be? (Because guess what? Here’s your chance!)
  • Write down anything else that comes to your mind.

You can make these items bullet points for now. You can flesh everything out later. Think about how you want to wish them good health, happy times with the ones they love, and what other types of beautiful things you may want to say. This is a happy day to express yourself and how much this person means to you in more than you can squeeze onto a birthday card. This is the type of birthday greeting that will be cherished for many years to come.

Now that you have a big list of items that are personalized to your birthday person, let’s look at the next step.

The 50th Birthday Speech Structure

This part is a flash from the past, going back to school days when we, as students, had to do some writing as part of the curriculum.  Hopefully, you have fond memories of this from your growing-up years!

Back in those days, we students had to write essays and book reports.  We didn’t just blurt out our reports any old way we chose. We used a structure.  That same structure can be applied to writing a speech.

Here it is. Does it ring any bells from your schoolday memories?

  • Introduction
  • Body Idea #1
  • Body Idea #2
  • Body Idea #3, etc.  (As many or as few of these as you wish.)

Using this basic arrangement will help you know what to write.  You’ll plug in the ideas from your brainstorm list and simply write each section — separately, if necessary.  Then tie each section together.  Plus, since your oration will be well-organized, your audience will be very impressed with your public speaking skills!

Now I’ll cover some tips and tricks for each section of your 50th birthday speech.

Content Ideas

Okay, now you have some idea of messages you want to convey or things to include from the brainstorm above. They can be married together into an overall theme or simply included as a body idea item. The good news is, you’re part of the way there already!

Here might be some examples:

  • You want to honor and convey your love for that person.
  • They’ve had a significant impact on your life and you want to thank them.
  • You want to express the joy they bring to your life.
  • You want to take the opportunity to give them a hard time.  😉
  • Anything else you might think of.

Moving on, if you completed the brainstorming step and feel okay about it, you have numerous ideas of sentiments and ideas to cover in your speech.

Beyond that, if you want to take it to the next level, here are some ideas to make your speech more interesting or even entertaining:

  • Use some famous quotes, funny birthday quotes, or sayings.
  • Personal milestones they have achieved in their life.
  • Highlight their endearing characteristics and qualities.
  • Mention or focus on special goals they wish to achieve in the future.
  • Touch on their hobbies and pastimes.
  • What did they want to be when they grew up, and what did they actually become?
  • What are some special memories and experiences you’ve had with that person?
  • What does this person mean to you?
  • What historical events happened on their birthday?
  • What popular songs or movies were out the day they were born?
  • Extraordinary adventures they’ve been on.
  • The story of how you two met.

Okay, now that we’ve covered all of that, let’s put this all together.

Writing Your 50th Birthday Speech

Here’s a suggestion on how to get this masterpiece to take shape:

  • Write the body of your speech first. Once you have a solid body, you can complement it with the introduction and conclusion.
  • After your body is ready, write the conclusion.
  • And once the conclusion is completed, move on to the introduction. (Notice the intro is at the end.  That is so you can get your main ideas down, then create a really nice lead-in introduction that works nicely with the body.)

But!  Let’s say things are just not flowing. What do you do?

  • If things just aren’t flowing well, write what does flow first.  Just get it down on paper. Then, take the next thing that comes to mind and write that.
  • There is no perfect plan for everyone, it’s whatever works that matters. You’re not going to be graded on this.
  • If in doubt, ask a friend or loved one to read it. They can advise you on how it sounds and where might be going off track.

Once you get through your draft, make sure to:

  • Read it out loud.  Listen to how the words flow and if the ideas are cohesive.  How does it sound?
  • Have someone else read it, as I said above.  What may sound good to you, might sound funny to someone else or it may sound great and you’re just too close to it to tell.

Rehearse Your 50th Birthday Speech

Even if you’re an expert public speaker, it never hurts to rehearse.  And if you’re a novice, you will especially want to practice.  Why?  Because practicing your speech will make you feel more relaxed and comfortable.  A lot of what will make your speech a success is how you deliver it, so practice!

  • Say your speech in the mirror. This gives you a chance to make sure it flows, the grammar and language are okay, and you’ve covered everything you wanted.
  • If you can, try to recruit an audience of friends or family members to critique what you have to say.
  • Incorporate any reasonable changes.

Now for some extra tips for putting the polish on your work.

Writing the introduction

  • Make sure your intro is something that grabs everyone’s attention.
  • Small jokes or good-natured pokes at their age may be appropriate.
  • Your introduction is the first impression.
  • Use a hook – something that catches attention.

How about your speech’s conclusion?

  • End with a thank you for having the opportunity to present your speech.
  • Use a call to action – something like a toast to the guest of honor.
  • Make your 50th birthday speech conclusion highly memorable.
  • If applicable, introduce the next person.

Other Tips and Hints for a Winning 50th Birthday Speech

  • Make your speech between 3 to 5 minutes in length.
  • Must be appropriate to your audience, should there be children make sure it’s family-friendly.
  • Light-hearted humor works well.
  • Be sincere. Don’t make stuff up that you don’t truly believe, people will see through a lie – and that can ruin a party.

I hope these guidelines on how to write a 50th birthday speech make your task easier.  I also hope it helps you write a memorable speech for your guest of honor. It’s their big day, make their celebration great by making them feel special!

Good luck to you. I know you can do it!

You can give your birthday speech right before you cut the birthday cake, or before dinner, if there’s going to be a fancy birthday dinner. Whenever you do it, and whatever you say, just know that a special milestone birthday like this is worth celebrating in all the most beautiful ways you can. Enjoy!

16th Birthday Speech Sample

This 16th birthday speech sample really hits the mark.

The mother of the 16-year-old birthday girl called to tell me that not only did the audience react the right way in all the right places, but also her daughter loved the speech, from beginning to end.

You can't ask for more than that kind of response. Better yet, it's the type of speech that you can easily adapt for your daughter. Talk about a sweet sixteen!

[Facing Rhonda*]

Sweet 16. I can hardly believe it. Today is your 16th birthday celebration. I find that incredible. I find you incredible. Don't worry, I won't get all gushy about how great you are. I'll only talk about how beautiful you are.

Don’t cringe and roll your eyes just yet. I promise not to embarrass you with the kind of things that go on greeting cards and "Hang in there" kitty posters.

But turning 16 is something else. You're no longer a child. This I know well. I have watched you grow up — literally. Now, today, filled with hopes and dreams, you stand on the verge of becoming a woman. A beautiful woman. And it warms my heart to see you, my beautiful daughter, blossom before my eyes. You amaze me.

Rhonda , today will likely go down as one of the best days of your life.

I hope that, one day years from now, you will look back and remember this special birthday as a bright and happy moment in your life, with your family and friends there to share wholeheartedly in your joy.

[Motioning to the family and friends in the room]

Your entire family and friends are the most precious gifts you have in life, something you'll clearly see a little bit later, when you open your 16th birthday presents. Kidding aside, we are your biggest fans and only wish you the best life has to offer. Nothing less, because today is the start of a fun, exciting and rewarding journey for you.

[Turning back to Rhonda ]

It’s an honor for me to be a major part your life. You are an extraordinary 16-year-old girl. You have a wonderful quality of independence that I value and respect. The power to achieve is in every nerdy fiber of you, whether you're spending hours at the "Math Club" or obsessing over every aspect of any school project.

You are a unique individual with unique tastes, so it gives me great pleasure to know that you love everything Hollywood, because I also think you have great taste — lots of it, in fact — especially when it comes to fine cuisine or traveling around the world with a bunch of middle-aged women like me, your Mom, and all my friends.

And you are wonderfully tenacious when you want something, like whenever you try to persuade me to give you a credit card or get you a dog, which you finally did…after years and years of trying.

Seriously, though, your friends and your family — me, your sister, your brother and, if he was here today, your Dad — are so proud of you, because we see so much potential in you and we know that you can do anything you really want, because unlike so many other kids your age, you know what you want to do in life. You really want to sink your teeth into a whole world of possibilities, and that makes us happy because we know you will never leave anyone down in the mouth, just a trail of infectious smiles.

Rhonda , although you know 100% what path you will ultimately choose in life, we hold you in our hearts for not what you will do but for the way you will do it.

We know you will be yourself. You will be brave. You will be honest. You will be kind. You will never give up. You are — and will be — an inspiration to all of us.

[Facing the birthday party guests again]

I’m sure everyone here shares my sense of joy in watching her wonderful soul and kind spirit we all love watching her spread your wings, take flight and reach for the sky. We've all seen what her heart and beautiful soul can do.

You are a gift to all the lives you've touched. You fill my heart with happiness. I'm so grateful I've been blessed to know a wonderful person like you. If you were a jewel, you would be the most radiant and precious the world over.

Always be that shiny and loving person you are now! Remember that you always have me, your family and your friends to support you.

[Facing the birthday party guests again — and raising your glass towards your Rhonda, so others will follow you]

Now, ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses and join me in a toast to this remarkable, young woman.

[Facing Rhonda again]

We've gathered here to tell you, Just how much you mean to us, That's why we're toasting you today, And why we're making such a fuss. Today we wish you all the best, You deserve it more than most, Here's to a very beautiful soul, Our love and this happy birthday toast.

Rhonda , may your 16th birthday be as unforgettable as you've made all our lives with your kindness and joy (in other words, as unforgettable as you).

Now let's all drink up and enjoy the rest of the night!

* Not her real name.

40th Birthday Speech Sample

There's a very simple reason I like this 40th birthday speech sample: it's truly a gift of love from husband to wife, without a hint of condescension.

The husband's sincere appreciation of his wife's inner and outer beauty is, I think, a wonderful ode to the couple's love and his wife's 40th year on this earth.

You can simply change some of the facts to write a 40th birthday speech worthy of your loved one. Let the 40th birthday party begin!

Plus, the husband let me know (via email) that his wife thoroughly enjoyed his speech, which only made him (and me, as the speechwriter) all the happier.

Welcome, everybody. Before I say a few words about my beautiful wife, I would like to thank you for helping us celebrate her 40th birthday. We are so grateful that you took some time out of your busy week to join us here. Tonight wouldn't be nearly as amazing without you!

[Looking at Joyce and around the room]

Joyce*, it is hard to find the right words to express how much Joyce has added to my life all these years…but that won't stop me from going on and on about her.

It's incredible to think that we met at a bar for singles in 1995, got engaged in 1996, were married in 1997 and became first-time parents in 2004. How time flies…but not for my beautiful wife.

[Looking only at your wife]

Joyce, wishing you a "Happy 40th Birthday" just doesn't seem right. Happy 20th birthday for the second time is more like it. It's not only because you still have the face of an angel, the body of a goddess and the spunk of a teenager. It's also because you’re a beautiful, strong, sexy, funny, upbeat person with so much love in your heart and a zest for life that's simply contagious.

For me, your 40th birthday is a chance to say proudly that I am so fortunate and grateful to have you as my wife and best friend. I think it's fair to say that for me, our children Stuart* and Donna*, our families and our friends, you’ve always brought so much joy, positivity and fulfillment to all our lives.   Your smile, your patience, your optimism, your creativity and, most of all, your free spirit have always been an example of what it means to be the best kind of daughter, wife, friend and, most importantly, a wonderful mother, what with the hours upon hours of after-school ballet, gymnastics, baseball and soccer under your belt. You have definitely set the "how to be a super woman" bar very, very high.

I know I speak for everyone here when I say we have all learned so much from you over the past years. Along with the immense love, joy and adventure you've brought into our lives, you've taught us all, by example, the real value of love, family, friendship, kindness and honesty. You've shown us how to appreciate what we have and never take it for granted. You have always been, and always will be, an inspiration to all of us here, especially me.

[Raising your glass toward Joyce, so others will follow you] Now, ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses and do me the honor of joining me in a toast to Joyce.

[Turning back to Joyce]

Joyce, may your 40th birthday be as unforgettable as our first kiss, our wedding day or the birth of our children (in other words, as unforgettable as you). And may you celebrate many, many more birthdays — [mock whispering under her breath] under the radar, of course.

Darling, I love you even more today than when we first met. Again, happy 40th birthday, my love!

50th Birthday Speech Samples

Here are different types of 50th birthday speech samples you can use as inspiration when you craft your 50th birthday speech. Feel free to mix it up a little, combining elements from all three 50th birthday speeches below.

Short 50th Birthday Speech

Short 50th Birthday Speech - Free Birthday Speech Sample

Here's to someone who has reached the pinnacle of true wisdom and the very prime of life! Cheers to every lesson you take from your past and all the adventures you have yet to take. Let's raise our glasses to your 50 years of beautiful memories and many more to come. Happy 50th birthday!

50th Birthday Speech from Daughter to Mother

When it comes to birthday speech samples, it's important to show "range" (how far you can go).

For example, below is one birthday speech for a young woman, a daughter who wanted to commemorate her mother's 50th birthday in a cool way.

That doesn't mean throwing a bunch of the latest buzz words into the speech. It means capturing how a young person speaks (not what he or she actually says). Take a look for yourself...

[Looking at your mother]

Mom, wishing you a "happy 50th birthday" doesn't seem right. Happy 25th birthday for the second time is more like it. It's not only because you still have the legs and face of an airline stewardess. It's also because you're a whirlwind of pure love, passion, enthusiasm, warmth and humor that's, well, simply contagious. I see you in the laughter and kindness of our precious family and your many friends. And I see you in me—the best part of me.

For me, today is a chance to say proudly that I feel so fortunate and honored to have you not only as my mother but also as my inspiration. Along with your tremendous love and support, you've brought, by example, immense joy and purpose into my life.

I'm so glad that you've always had my back, even when you told me to keep my back (and the rest of my body) at school, not at home. I know I have caused you—and still cause you—a little bit of stress. It's not on purpose. It's actually payback for all the times you've embarrassed me in front of my friends. Seriously, though, I will try my best to be a better me, Daughter 2.0, a version of me that's modeled on the best of you. You are so special to me, to our family and all your BFFs.

Many, many, many thanks for all you do. You truly live by the motto of giving everything and expecting nothing in return. I don't think I know a more thoughtful and generous person. For everyone who knows and loves you, you are our resourceful, loving matriarch and health nut, devoted to family and friends, over whom you fuss, spoil and most definitely feed—hungry or not—whenever we come to visit you.

[Holding the hand of your mother or still looking at her]

Happy 50th birthday, Mom! May you celebrate many, many more birthdays—under the radar, of course. I love you, Mom! After 22 years of living under your roof, I can honestly say two things: (1) You are an amazing mother and (2) I plan to live another 22 years under your roof. Live with it.

[Turning to your guests]

On behalf of my Mom and myself, I want to thank all of you for coming here to celebrate her 25th-for-the-second-time birthday. Tonight wouldn't be nearly as special without you. Now let's all raise our glasses to our birthday girl, drink up and enjoy the rest of the party!

50th Birthday Speech from Brother to Brother

The 50th birthday speech below is a more solemn speech for the brother of the 50th birthday boy, who is a very pious man. This template is ideal for anybody who must pay tribute to a religious birthday boy or girl.

Welcome, everybody. Before I say a few words about my wonderful brother, Peter*, I would like to thank you for helping us celebrate his 50th birthday. We really appreciate that you took the time to be here. Tonight wouldn't be nearly as amazing without you!

[Looking at Peter and around the room]

It is hard to find the right words to express how much Peter has added to my life, all our lives, in fact, for so many years…but that won't stop me from going on and on about him.

Today, Peter celebrates his 50th birthday. Instead of embarking on the proverbial mid-life crisis in which so many of us find ourselves, he is a force of a man. The sparkle in his eyes and the divine love in his heart have not been dulled by the 18,250 days he has lived on this earth. I hope that never changes because it’s just one of the many things I admire about him.

For me, Peter, your 50th birthday is a chance to say proudly that I am so grateful and honored to have you as my brother and as a friend. I think it's fair to say that for me, Mom, our sisters, your wife, your son, your grandson, the whole family and your friends, you’ve always brought so much joy to all our lives.

The Lord brought you into this world 50 years ago — on a Sunday — spiritually, a day of rest, a day of worship, a day of great joy, a day of solidarity, a gift from God. An important day, to say the least.

Peter's day of birth is worth mentioning since, for him, giving his heart to God has meant a new life, a new purpose, a new sense of self. It has meant washing his earthly worries away, day after day, and trusting in God to guide him. Peter has chosen to trust in God's plan and will. He now knows that no matter what happens, good or bad, God is watching over him and bringing him to where he's supposed to be…at home, around the corner or on the road.

A good man in so many ways, Peter has shown his love for God by observing God's commandments and applying God's principles. And this has not been in vain. By living in harmony with God's guidance, Peter has shown our heavenly Father that he truly appreciates all that he has done for him. And I can definitely say that we here have been the main beneficiaries of Peter's love and kindness.

[Looking at Peter]

Yes, Peter, today not only marks a major milestone for you, but also for us. I know I speak for everyone here when I say it's such a joy to celebrate you and your life, and wish you the best of health and happiness. And what a celebration it is. I'm sure you must be quite moved by the presence of so many loved ones, a clear sign that you are cherished by many.

Indeed, we are here to celebrate your smile, your patience, your optimism, your caring and, most of all, your steadfastness, which has always been an example of what it means to be the best kind of son, father, grandfather, brother and friend. You have definitely set the "how to be a God-loving man" bar very, very high.

Everybody here has learned so much from you over the years. Along with the immense love, joy and kindness you've brought into our lives, you've taught us all, by example, the real value of love, family, friendship, caring, honesty and the Lord's ever-present care and power in their lives. You've shown us how to appreciate what we have and never take it for granted. You have always been, and always will be, an inspiration to all of us here.

For you, today must be bittersweet. Sweet because you can look back on your 50 years of life with satisfaction and pride, knowing that everyone here, including me, consider you a treasure, a best friend and a man who loves God — and bitter because many of your loved ones are not here to share it with you. But I know you find comfort from knowing they are all in the Lord's loving arms.

For me, well, today is a chance to say thank you on behalf of our family and friends. Thank you for serving as a shining example of God's goodness and grace. Of course, these amazing qualities of yours are timeless and ageless — they radiate from your very essence. They come from your heart and cast a beautiful light around you and us. We have all been lucky to be near enough to step into that light.

[Facing the audience]

It would be difficult for me to list the many, many ways Peter has graced our lives, so I won't even try. We would be here for hours upon hours, if I did. Suffice to say, we feel so fortunate and honored to have you as family, a friend and, most importantly, our inspiration. Along with your contagious love of life, people and all living things, you've inspired us, by example, to look for every opportunity to bring God's love, immense joy and purpose to our lives.

More than anything else, we here feel blessed to have you in our lives. You are an amazing soul who never hesitates for even a second to be compassionate and kind. You are so special to everyone in this room. Again, happy 50th birthday, Peter!

Now, everyone, please raise your glasses in a toast to Peter.

[Turning back to Peter]

Peter, may you celebrate many more birthdays in great health and spirits as you embark upon your retirement years. May you also continue to find solace in God's word, love and His plan for you.

[Turning back to your guests]

Now, everyone, drink up and enjoy the rest of the party!

A toast to six decades of your loving, caring and inspiring ways. To the stories you shared, the memories you made, and the adventures that still lie ahead for you. You're not getting older, just becoming a genuine classic. Happy 60th birthday to the most inspiring person I know!

60th Birthday Speech from Sister to Sister-in-Law

Birthday speech samples like the one below show that even a sister-in-law can deliver a heartfelt birthday speech (with a little tongue-in-cheek to add some fun and whimsy to this tribute).

[Looking at your sister-in-law]

Susan*...dear, dear, Susan. From the moment I met you, I knew you were a keeper. You still are. You light up every room you enter with your loving, caring, happy, silly, funny, life-of-the-party ways. My brother, Gary*, is lucky to have you. I'm lucky to have you. In fact, our whole family is lucky to have you. I honestly don't know what we'd do without you.

When I tell people about my incredible sister-in-law, Susan, I always say, "I have the best sister-in-law in the world. She's my best friend." And this always gets the same response: disbelief. They look at me as if I'm trying to sell them dragon eggs or something and say, "Those are words that will never, ever come out of my mouth." I guess we live in a scary, post-Solange Knowles world. But I will say it right here and now: I have the best sister-in-law in the world.

It gives me and everyone in this room, I'm sure, immense pleasure to be here tonight and celebrate you on your 60th birthday. Happy 60th birthday, Susan. I love you.

[Turning to the guests]

Now let's all raise our glasses to the sweetest and youngest 60 year old we know!

[Turning back to your sister-in-law]

Susan, may you celebrate many more birthdays in great health and even greater spirits.

[Turning back to the guests]

Everyone, drink up and enjoy the rest of the party!

80th Birthday Speech Samples

Here's a variety of 80th birthday speech samples that you can draw from when you put together your own 80th birthday speech. To express exactly how you feel about the birthday boy or girl, simply incorporate parts from each of the 80th birthday speech examples below that feel right to you.

Short 80th Birthday Speech

Short 80th Birthday Speech - Free Birthday Speech Sample

To a true gem who has redefined and elevated what 80 years of life should look like! Your spirit shines brighter with each passing year. Let's toast to your wonderful journey, your invaluable wisdom, and the memories you have yet to create. Here's to your incredible 80 years and many more!

80th Birthday Speech from Friend to Friend

This birthday speech sample is different from the others on this page in one very important respect: it's delivered by a platonic friend, not a family member or sweetheart.

This type of speech requires a certain tact. A friend should not try to appropriate what's a big celebration for, in this case, the 80th birthday boy and his family, stealing the scene (so to speak) and ending up as the lead in this major "birthday" production.

A friend's speech should just serve as a complement to the evening. That's exactly what the speech sample below does.

Welcome, everybody. Thank you for being here and sharing David's 80th birthday celebration. I must say that I feel 50 years younger as I gaze around the room! OK, maybe 10 years younger.

[Facing David*]

So here we are together to celebrate you and your 80 well-lived, well-loved years—golden years full of energy, achievement, commitment, joie de vivre, adventure, fulfillment in marriage and family life and happiness. And you've seen sadness and tough times too, finding the inner strength to rise above them.

David, we hold you in our hearts for not what you've done for us but for the way you have done it. Being yourself. Being gutsy. Being honest. Being kind. Working hard. Never giving up. Your wisdom, your experience, your insight, your authenticity—are inspiring.

Today, we offer you our gratitude and our loving best wishes. Personally, I feel very privileged to have a friend like you in my life for so long. You've been an amazing role model, supporter, adviser, confidant and, when there's a game of Rummy Cube afoot, a worthy opponent. I can only hope that the rest of my journey on Earth is as full of love, joy, happiness and travel as yours.

David, all your family and friends here tonight pay tribute to the wonderful, generous and loving person you are.

[Facing the birthday party guests]

Before we toast this incredible man, I would like to leave you with a poem by Helen Steiner Rice that I adapted to capture what makes David so special as a friend.

[Turning back to David]

David, your friendship is a golden chain,

The links are shared moments so dear,

And like a rare and precious jewel,

I treasure you more each year.

Your friendship is clasped together firmly,

With a love that's deep and true,

And it's rich with happy memories,

and fond recollections, too.

Time can't destroy its beauty,

For, as long as memory lives,

Years can't erase the pleasure,

That the joy of your friendship gives.

For your friendship is a priceless gift

That can't be bought or sold,

But to have a friend like you,

Is worth far more than gold.

And the golden chain of friendship,

Is a strong and blessed tie,

Binding kindred hearts together,

As the years go passing by.

Now, ladies and gentlemen, please raise your glasses and join me in a toast to this remarkable man [raising your glass towards your David, so others will follow you].

[Facing David]

David, may your 80th birthday be as unforgettable as your first kiss, your wedding day or the birth of your children and grandchildren (in other words, as unforgettable as you).

* Not his real name.

100th Birthday Speech Samples

Here are examples of 100th birthday speeches that can serve as your muse when you create your own 100th birthday speech. Don't hesitate to incorporate aspects from each of the 100th birthday speech samples below to make it unique.

Short 100th Birthday Speech

Short 100th Birthday Speech - Free Birthday Speech Sample

To a century of your utmost grace, strength and kindness. You've witnessed a lifetime of history, yet your spirit remains timeless. As we raise our glasses, we celebrate your remarkable journey, honor your wisdom, and anticipate more chapters in your extraordinary story. Happy 100th birthday!

100th Birthday Speech from Son to Mother

This is one of those classic 100th birthday speech samples. It has all the ingredients of a heartfelt 100th birthday tribute: a trip down memory lane, recognition of a life well lived, a big show of respect and inspiring words for the future (whatever it holds).

[Facing the audience]

I would like to thank everyone for coming here today to celebrate our mother's special birthday.

To say I'm delighted to toast my mother on her 100th birthday is an understatement. I feel very fortunate to have this honor — but I'm not very surprised. Long ago, I realized that my mother had discovered the secret to living longer. She hasn't shared all of it with me yet but has hinted that it has something to do with her Atlantic City junkets, weekly doses of the local Senior Center and Eggplant Parmesan.

Mom, living to 100 is a blessing but I don't have to tell you. You bring new meaning to the "word" blessing.

For everyone who knows and loves you, you are our resourceful, loving matriarch and master chef, devoted to family and friends, over whom you fuss, spoil and most definitely feed — hungry or not — whenever we come to visit you.

For your four children who grew up in your warm and loving home, you are more than a mother — you're an inspiration. You're as sharp and feisty as ever with a true passion for cooking, sewing, gardening and everything life has to offer — plus you're an independent woman who has lived happily ever after in the same house for 65 years. If we're only half as sharp, feisty and passionate as you at 100, we will still be sharper, feistier and more passionate than anyone I know.

For your 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren who can see beyond your white hair, you are not only a repository of memories, from every family and holiday occasion or party — you are someone as alive and vibrant as they are.

Yes, living to 100 is a blessing and we are thrilled, to say the least, to celebrate the blessing we have in you. What a privilege to have you here today, what a treat to love you and what a joy to be loved by you.

Happy 100th birthday, Mom. Here's to you and the truly special legacy you leave us every day.

How to Write a Memorable 40-60th Birthday Toast : Ideas and Examples

Last updated on August 11, 2023 - © Free-Sample-Letter.com

The 40th, 50th, and 60th Birthdays: A Time of Reflection and Celebration

Life's milestone birthdays , namely the 40th, 50th, and 60th, are special occasions that symbolize more than just the passing of time. They are gateways to new chapters, opportunities to pause and reflect on the paths we've taken, the challenges we've overcome, and the dreams we've fulfilled. As we reach these significant ages, we don't merely celebrate the years that have gone by; we rejoice in the wisdom, resilience, and sense of purpose that have grown within us.

The 40th birthday heralds a season of maturity, self-confidence, and often, a renewed pursuit of passions and goals. The 50th birthday invites us to take stock of our accomplishments, cherish the relationships we've nurtured, and seek new adventures with the wisdom of experience. The 60th birthday marks a graceful transition into a time of reflection, fulfillment, and anticipation of the richness that the coming years may bring.

Friends, family, and loved ones often join us in commemorating these landmark birthdays. Whether it's an intimate dinner with close family, a lively party with friends, or a soul-searching retreat to a favorite place, the celebration of these milestones is as unique as the individual whose life we're honoring.

These ages are not just numbers; they're badges of life's journey, tangible proof of growth, transformation, and the pursuit of dreams. They remind us to embrace the present, honor the past, and boldly step into the uncharted future that beckons us with promise and potential. Whether you're throwing a vibrant bash or indulging in quiet contemplation, the 40th, 50th, and 60th birthdays are profound moments to celebrate the beautiful complexity of life and the exciting possibilities that still await.

Crafting a 40-60th Birthday Speech: Our Writing Tips

Creating a speech for a 40th, 50th or 60th birthday celebration is a delightful opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and inspire. Here are some tailored tips and thoughtful strategies to help you craft a memorable toast for these milestone occasions:

Choose Your Theme Thoughtfully

Consider the tone and direction you want your speech to take. Will you journey through life's chapters, highlighting key memories and lessons, or focus on celebrating achievements and envisioning the future? Your theme sets the stage for your speech, so select one that resonates with your audience and your own personal journey.

Personalize with Anecdotes and Stories

Engage your audience by sharing unique memories, humorous encounters, or touching moments from different stages of life. Whether it's a childhood adventure, a professional milestone, or a cherished friendship, these personal touches add warmth and authenticity to your speech.

Balance Humor with Sensitivity

Humor can add a delightful spark to your speech but wield it with care. Celebrate life's quirks and joys without crossing lines that might make guests uncomfortable. A gentle, self-deprecating humor often works well, as it creates a connection without alienating anyone.

Maintain Focus and Brevity

While it's tempting to cover every significant life event, a concise and focused speech often leaves a more lasting impression. Aim for 5-10 minutes, structuring your speech in a way that flows smoothly and keeps your audience engaged.

End with Gratitude and Inspiration

Conclude your speech by expressing heartfelt appreciation to those who have enriched your life. Share reflections or wisdom that encourages others to cherish life's journey. A well-chosen ending resonates with listeners and adds a poignant touch to the celebration.

Rehearse with Intention

Familiarize yourself with your speech through repeated practice. Consider rehearsing in front of a trusted friend or family member who can provide feedback. Confidence in delivery can turn a good speech into an unforgettable one.

Consider the Audience

Remember who you are speaking to. Customize your speech to appeal to your guests, considering their relationship to you and what would make the celebration meaningful for everyone.

Embrace Authenticity

Speak from the heart. Your sincerity, joy, and love for life will shine through if you allow yourself to be genuine. It's your celebration, so let your personality guide your words.

Remember, the best speeches are not merely read; they are felt. Your 40th, 50th or 60th birthday speech is an opportunity to weave a narrative that captures the essence of your life thus far and inspires those celebrating with you. Approach it with creativity, compassion, and celebration, and you'll create a moment that you and your guests will cherish for years to come.

Celebrating 40-60 Years of Life: A Sample of Toast to Say on Birthday's

Embracing the milestone: a jubilant reflection on turning 50.

Hey everyone!

I'd like to say a few words....it's not everyday that we turn 50 after all!

First off, I would like to thank everyone for coming today to celebrate this special occasion with me. It is and will remain a milestone for me in my life and what better way to remember it than with all of you here with me.

50 years old...sounds like quite a feat, especially as I hear myself say it. Life is interesting, we don't feel the years pass us by, we feel as young as we did in our 20's...sometimes act that way and yet....people think we should "act our age" !....

But why I say!! Why when we feel like a young spring chicken, full of energy as always, enjoying every day for the challenges it brings as well as the moments full of love and happiness like this one (tonight/today).

All of you hear (tonight/today) with me are precious for me and one that without you all would not have been a birthday worth celebrating like this!

I look here at you all, all of you here for me...and the words become hard to voice...

Many of you, we go way back....some of you here tonight we have been friends for (20) years or more, others, you are some of what we "old folks" might call "newer friends", ...but not any less important to me!

You newer friends that are here, when we met we just seemed to get along as if we had known each other for at least 20 years anyways so you see...there really is not differentiation!

You are all special to me and I am so happy that you are all here with me to celebrate me getting older! I need all the help I can get!!

Thank you everyone!

Cherishing Five Decades: A Grateful Celebration of Life at 50

Hello, everyone!

I stand before you today on a remarkable occasion, one that happens only once: my 50th birthday. A day filled with reflection, celebration, and perhaps a hint of disbelief!

First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you for being here. You've not only gathered to mark a milestone in my life but have enriched the journey that brought me to this day. Your presence here is the greatest gift I could ask for.

Turning 50, as I've discovered, is less about "getting old" and more about embracing the wisdom and joy that comes with time. Yes, it might sound like quite an accomplishment, but I don't feel any older, nor do I wish to "act my age"! After all, age is but a number, and I still feel the vibrant energy of my younger self, ready to dance the night away.

Tonight, I look around this room and see faces that have been a part of my life for decades, and others that have recently joined this incredible journey. Each one of you holds a special place in my heart, whether we've shared (20) years of friendship or just a few unforgettable moments.

To my lifelong friends, thank you for standing by me, growing with me, and enduring every up and down. Our shared memories are the threads that weave the fabric of my life.

To my newer friends, you've brought fresh perspectives, laughter, and joy into my world. Our connection feels timeless, as though we've known each other forever.

As I stand at this unique crossroads, looking back at the road I've traveled and forward to new adventures, I am filled with gratitude for every challenge and triumph, every tear and laughter. Each has shaped me, taught me, and prepared me for the years ahead.

So here's to being 50, to embracing life with all its beautiful complexity, to cherishing old friendships, and welcoming new ones. Here's to us, to love, to laughter, and to many more years of making memories together.

Thank you, everyone, for making this day unforgettable! Let's celebrate!

40th Birthday Speech for a Spouse or Partner

Good evening everyone,

I stand before you not just as the husband/wife/partner of the birthday person, but as their most ardent admirer, greatest supporter, and of course, the person who has borne witness to the quirks, follies, and those idiosyncrasies that make them, well, unique.

When [Partner's Name] turned 20, they were vibrant, adventurous, and fearless. At 30, wise, focused, and still a bit reckless. Now, at the grand age of 40, what are they? Absolutely fabulous, and somehow, more adventurous than ever!

40 years, ladies and gentlemen. That's the time it took for [Partner's Name] to perfect that secret family recipe, finally agree that my favorite TV show might be worth watching, and accept that no, the socks don't magically end up in the laundry basket. And oh, what a glorious 40 years it has been!

It's the years of shared glances, understanding smiles, crazy vacations, unexpected dance-offs in the living room, and those serene moments when a simple hug would be worth a thousand words.

60th Birthday Speech for a Parent: A Tribute from a Child

Ladies and Gentlemen, family and friends,

Today we gather to celebrate not just a birthday, but a life filled with wisdom, love, and endless support. Today, we honor my parent as they reach the beautiful age of 60, a milestone that's as significant as it is rich in memories and experiences.

As I stand here, memories of my childhood flood my mind, memories that are wrapped in the warmth and comfort of my parent's embrace. From teaching me to ride a bike to guiding me through the complex labyrinth of life, [Parent's Name] has been my unwavering compass.

In my parent's eyes, I saw the spark of endless possibilities, a belief that I could achieve anything, be anyone. They taught me that failure is not the opposite of success; it's a stepping stone towards it. Through their actions, their patience, and their tireless faith, they sculpted not just my life, but the lives of everyone they touched.

60 years is a long time, but for my parent, it seems to have been a journey filled with joy, learning, and constant growth. They've been a loving spouse, a doting parent, a caring friend, and a wise mentor.

I've learned kindness from their compassion, wisdom from their words, and strength from their character. I've seen them face challenges with grace and celebrate victories with humility. They've shown me that love isn't just a word; it's a series of deliberate actions.

But let's not forget the fun times! Whether it was family vacations, weekend outings, or simply playing games in the living room, [Parent's Name] always knew how to bring laughter and joy into our lives.

As we celebrate these wonderful 60 years, I want to say, "Thank you." Thank you for the stories, the lessons, the hugs, and the unwavering love. Thank you for being my parent.

Happy 60th birthday, [Parent's Name]. May this new chapter be filled with health, happiness, and continued inspiration.

Here's to you, and here's to a lifetime of memories that we've shared and many more that we will create together.

Speech for a Long-Time Friend: Reflecting on a Friendship Spanning Decades

Ladies and Gentlemen, friends, family, and most importantly, my dear friend [Friend's Name],

Today, I have the distinct honor of standing before you to celebrate the life and the heart of someone who has not only been a friend but a true companion for many decades. As we raise our glasses to toast [Friend's Name]'s 50th/60th birthday, we also salute a friendship that has withstood the test of time.

When I look back on the tapestry of our shared memories, I'm transported to a place where time stands still. A place filled with laughter, adventures, dreams, and sometimes tears. From the days of youthful exuberance to the wisdom of maturity, our friendship has been a constant, a beacon in the storm, a source of unending joy.

[Friend's Name], you have been there in the best and worst of times. Through triumphs and tribulations, celebrations and sorrows, we've navigated life's complex journey hand in hand. Our bond is not just a friendship; it's a shared life, a shared history.

You have been the confidante who listened without judgment, the cheerleader who believed in me even when I didn't, the guide who led me when I was lost. You've been a sibling in all but blood.

We've created not only memories but also traditions. The way we celebrate our victories, the way we console each other in defeats, our favorite jokes that never grow old, and our understanding of each other's quirks - these are the threads that knit our unique friendship tapestry.

But most importantly, we've grown together. We've shaped each other's lives, influenced each other's characters, and enriched each other's hearts. You've taught me that true friendship isn't about being inseparable; it's about being separated and knowing nothing will change.

As we gather to celebrate your 50th/60th year, I look forward to many more years of laughter, late-night talks, shared dreams, and endless support. I look forward to growing old together as friends who know that age is merely a number, and true friendship is timeless.

Happy birthday, dear friend. Here's to the past that has shaped us, the present that unites us, and the future that awaits us.

Cheers to you, [Friend's Name], and to a friendship that will last forever.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Humorous Speech on Aging: A Light-hearted Take on the Realities of Growing Older

Ladies and Gentlemen, and [Celebrant's Name],

Let me just start by saying, age is just a number. Unfortunately, in this case, that number is alarmingly close to a three-digit figure, but who's counting?

Yes, friends, we're here to celebrate a birthday. And not just any birthday. It's [Celebrant's Name]'s big one, a momentous occasion that reminds us all that growing older isn't for sissies.

They say that 60 is the new 40, and 50 is the new 30. By that math, [Celebrant's Name], you're practically a teenager, so don't be surprised if we ground you for staying out too late tonight.

Now, let's talk about the gifts of aging. And no, I'm not referring to those discount coupons for the early bird special at the local diner.

First and foremost, let's embrace those silver strands of wisdom. Who needs hair dye when your natural highlights come free of charge? That's not gray; it's "platinum experience."

Then there's the memory. They say it's the first thing to go, but what were we talking about again?

Ah yes, the "Golden Years." They're golden for a reason. You can finally chase your dreams, whether it's becoming a rockstar, a famous painter, or just the person who yells at those darn kids to get off your lawn.

You might notice that things start to creak and groan a little more, but don't worry, that's not the house settling, that's just your joints joining the conversation.

They also say that with age comes wisdom. I'm still waiting for that to kick in, but I'm assured it's any day now. In the meantime, [Celebrant's Name], your ability to pretend you know what you're talking about has never been sharper.

All joking aside, growing older has its privileges. You've gathered a lifetime of memories, friendships, experiences, and yes, a few laugh lines. But those lines are a roadmap to a life well-lived, a life full of joy and love.

So here's to you, [Celebrant's Name], for leading the way with style, grace, and a wink in your eye. May your coming years be filled with laughter, love, and a few more good-natured jokes at your expense.

Happy birthday, my friend. May your wit stay as sharp as your memory is fuzzy, and may you continue to age like fine wine. Or at least like a cheese that gets better with time.

Birthday speech

Putting a birthday speech together can be a very daunting process, especially if you have to write it for someone else.

Like many of us, unless you have a natural talent, it’s not uncommon to go blank when it comes to this topic. The usual spiel of thanking everyone and telling them to enjoy their night is satisfactory though can be quite boring and leave everyone yawning.

But dont worry, by following these easy tips and examples of speeches, you will be able to ensure your birthday speech is one that captivates your audience and makes the moment a memorable one.

5 tips to help you with your next birthday speech

1. write it all down.

Take a few moments to list all the qualities and funny moments in dot points to give you an understanding of what you want to highlight. After listing them all down, take the time to elaborate on the points.

2. Find a sample speech that works

Find a sample birthday speech that you feel is suitable for the occasion. Use the points and information that you had written previously and incorporate them into the sample speech. By using the sample speech as a template, you have the benefit of following a proven recipe. It allows for the speech to be structured so it becomes fluent and highlights your points more concisely.

3. Engage your audience

Add humor to the speech to captivate your audience with a few laughs to enhance the vibe of the event. Not sure what to add? Why not take a moment to ask a close friend or relative of some funny moments they have experienced with the birthday person. If the stories are not suitable or non existent, then consider looking up some great one liners and add them into your speech to lighten the mood.

Your aim is to ensure the audience is actively engaged in your speech by focusing on the qualities of the birthday person which they can relate to. Bringing up memorable stories which highlight great times or milestones helps to resonate qualities of the birthday person and Incorporating a story or two can also make a point of enhancing the qualities which resonates what that person is really about.

4. Show sincerity

Towards the end of the speech, mention a few kind words to show them that you care. Thank everyone for coming, especially those who helped out in organising the event.

5. Keep it short

When people are at a party, they tend to have a short attention span and that’s if they haven’t had a drink yet. A speech which is between 2-5 minutes long is more than sufficient. By keeping it short, deep and meaningful, you can be sure to have your audience’s attention.

How to give a birthday speech – From friend to guest of honor

Here are a few examples of free birthday speeches for your next occasion:

Birthday speech example 1 – Thank you speech

Birthday speech

Firstly I would like to thank you all for coming to celebrate this milestone with me. I am not one to come out and say a speech, this is actually the first for me. Normally I would shy off, though I feel today is a time where it must be done.

The reason why you are all here is that in one way or another, you have been apart of my life and moulded me to the person I am today. I would truly like to thank you all for that.

I would like to thank both my mom and dad for not only putting up with me but being there when it counted and making me who I am. Thank you! Also to those who I have grown up with and have helped me over the years, you know who you are… I can say that I am truly blessed to have you all in my life!

Last but not least, I need to say thank you to everyone who has helped to set up and make today happen. Now that’s enough of me saying thank you. I hope everyone enjoys themselves. Lets all have a drink and have a great time.

Birthday speech example 2 – Thank you speech

I want to take a moment to say thank you for everyone who has come down to come celebrate this birthday with me. It means a lot that you have all taken the time and I must say that I am blessed to have each and every one of you in my life. Thank you

Birthday speech example 3 – Thank you speech

A birthday is very important to a child. The cake, the candles and gifts are something which they which they look forward to weeks on end. As we get older, we begin to realize that more important than materialistic things are the things we celebrate to those who are most closest to us. I would like to say thank you for not only your best wishes and lovely gifts but for being here and making it the night that it is. Thank you.

Birthday speech example 4 – Coming of age and gratitude

I have to say that I am not one to perform any birthday speeches though with the amount of work which was put into making this night and the sheer turnout of people, I simply could not live with myself if I didn’t at least say a few words.

I would like to give a big shout out to all people involved it the planning of this special day of mine. As you all can see, a lot of time and effort has been spent to make this venue look beautiful and I am truly appreciative. Thank you.

For all of you who made the effort to come down here and celebrate this milestone of mine. I could not be happier as all of you in one way, shape, or form have shaped me to be the person I am today and for that I am eternally grateful. Through good times and bad, through sickness and in health, I have been supported and guided every step of the way and that has only reassured to me what really matters in life.

I have been quick to learn that all the flashy and shiny things in life slowly begin to fade, though the one thing that continues to shine in my world is the true connections and relationships I have formed with my family and friends.

So enough about all this sentimental nonsense. It’s time to put the music back on and get everyone back on this dance floor. Thank you all for coming and I hope you enjoy the night. Thank you!

Birthday speech example 5 – Coming of age

So whilst I am up here talking about this amazing day today we are celebrating, I have to say all the beautiful memories don’t I? Wrong. All I remember is the most embarrassing moments because I laughed so hard my glasses fell off my head, then I wasn’t too happy because I had to buy new ones.

So where do I start, my memory isn’t the best the older I get, that’s why my wife makes me do a crossword puzzle a day. Little does she know that I cheat from the answers on the bottom of the cross word page Ha-Ha. So as I get older and reflect, I would have to say best moments through out my life would have to be drawn to three main beautiful ones.

First would be marrying this beautiful lady I call my cook… I mean wife Ha-Ha.

Second would be becoming a father to these beautiful children standing in front of me, I am blessed to have the opportunity to raise these amazing children of mine and have never been more proud.

And thirdly, to the many people here today celebrating my birthday. I would not be the person standing here before you if it weren’t for each and everyone of you shaping me to who I am today.

I felt like writing this speech took me few minutes though I was told I was writing for most of the bloody day! Ha-Ha.

Thank you everyone for coming here today and celebrating this unforgettable night with me celebrating another year younger.

Birthday speech example 6 – For partner

Let’s face the truth. Some of us are not the best when it comes to remembering birthdays, but there is no way I could forget the birthday for the one I love. We are all here today to celebrate because (Name) has touched our lives in one way or another.

Today I want to openly say how much they mean to me. This is their birthday, and birthdays are supposed to be days which stand out in life. So (Name), I want to say thank you for being so caring over the years and making me so proud to be your partner.

Birthday speech example 7 – Birthday speech for husband

To the superman in my life. Happy birthday! Words are unable to express the amount of love I have for you. For anyone who knows you, knows how much of a kind hearted and bubbly character you are. Your generosity and strong nature are unlike no other I have ever met.

From when you came over to me over 20 years ago to ask me for my number, to building a strong relationship, falling in love, creating an incredible family, and now celebrating this milestone of yours today. It seems like a fairytale dream where I need to pinch myself every so often to believe that it is all true.

To all of you that have made the time to make it here tonight, thank you all for coming. Only people who were important to his life are here and it’s amazing how many people are actually here tonight.

Now back to my loving husband, on your birthday tonight, I want you to enjoy it without a care in the world, because a man like you deserves to be spoilt once in awhile. Happy birthday my love, may you continue to live with passion.

Birthday speech example 8 -Birthday speech for wife

To one of the most sexiest, beautiful, most amazing person apart from myself… Ha-Ha! To my incredible wife. I am unable to express how surreal it feels to have fallen in love and married such a beautiful soul. Never would I ever have thought i’d be so lucky to have such an angel like you in my life. Your smile, your character, your loving nature are just the tip of the iceberg of the many things you possess.

For all who are lucky enough to know her, understand that she is one who would do more for others than she would for herself. A quality which i’m sure we all agree is very rare these days. She always looks to see the positive in life, no matter how dark and gloomy things may be, something which she has allowed for me to adopt which has changed my life dramatically for the better, and i’m sure many others who are also here tonight.

To those who made the effort to come here today and celebrate this beautiful day today, thank you. You have made this day memorable and something i’m sure my wife will never forget. Now the party is still not over, so all of you grab a glass of champagne, and let’s party on well into the night as we celebrate this girls beautiful birthday.

Birthday speech example 9 – From mother to child

From changing your nappies to feeding you every time you cry, to making your favorite food which was always apple pie. The memories I have shared with you while growing up by your side, it was well worth the struggles and bumpy rides.

I look at you know and can’t stop smiling, for a beautiful grown boy/girl that you have become, no matter what you will always be my baby boy/girl, happy birthday and may this be another memory you will never forget like they first day we met. When you were born on this special day.

Birthday speech example 10 – 1 st birthday speech from mother

Even though your only one and you’re probably staring at me thinking what it this lady doing, my feeding time is soon. I am going to say this speech in front of all the family friends that are gathered here today to celebrate my child’s 1st birthday, where the fun times just keep getting better and better.

I remember the first day that I felt so sick and then after that my pants wouldn’t fit. I started eating everything in sight and my pantry would always start full and now and by night there was nothing left to right. After that I couldn’t sleep and I would become a grump in the morning which was nothing of the unusual Ha-Ha.

Then my feet started to swell jeez now I can’t find shoes that will fit well. So after all that complaining and whining, the day came where you were brought into this world. Your father had fainted, which was nothing unusual and all I cared about was that you were finally out!

Now, as we celebrate your 1st birthday, you don’t understand anything right now, but when you do I’ll be saying another speech like this to embarrass you. More for the loving mother that I am to make sure you never forget something so important like this day.

Birthday speech example 11 – From father to son

I guess I will start with most that I know and the beautiful things I remember. I was the happiest man when I found out you were a boy, I was filled with joy! Everyday I would buy my little man a different toy, but there was a problem. Instead of playing with them, I would find you out in the garden. Eating dirt, mud, insects and even snails. You weren’t very good at hiding your muddy trails. How sweet and cute that was.

Then you would complain of feeling sick. Sometimes you were so difficult, just like trying to use a chopstick. You would always cry when I tried to feed you, and you loved to pee on me when I tried to change you. You were a sneaky little bugger and you loved to touch. I even remember having to pull you away from someone’s crotch. These are the beautiful memories that I remember.

Though enough with me embarrassing you with these funny times, this is you birthday so let it be filled with great times. So happy birthday to my great son, never forget that you are my number one!

Birthday speech example 12 – From friend

On this milestone that you have achieved, what an honor it is to be sharing this celebration with you. As we all know, this person has been determined since they were little, to strive and be the best they can, no matter what the circumstances were.

As (Insert name) continued to grow and mature, they created beautiful memories by making each moment count and radiating the love filled passions to each one that they came across. Im sure we can all say that we are eternally grateful that you have came into our lives and that you never lose your zest for life as you grow up into adulthood.

We all love you dearly and wish you nothing but the absolute best as that is what you truly deserve. Happy birthday!

Birthday speech example 13 – 21st Funny birthday speech from friend

Can I have your attention. We are all here today to realise something special. Something so worthwhile to celebrate. Something fun, enjoyable and memorable. We have come here together to recognise and share in the joy this moment brings. I am talking about the open bar! Ha-Ha!

On a more serious note, I would like to draw your attention to one of my best of friends whose 21st birthday we are celebrating here tonight. I have known (Insert name) for more than 10 years and during that time, we have had many moments of fun, adventure and as many of you may know, mischief. Whenever together, we always seemed to find a way to get ourselves into trouble.

Just like the time we decided to play a trick on his mom by colouring in his younger brothers face an interesting shade of green. We took the time to make it look realistic and ensured it was with a permanent marker so it couldn’t be easily rubbed off. I remember the look on his mom’s face as she freaked out and rushed the brother to the hospital. After the doctor giving it the once over and explaining to his mom the cause of the problem. I remember her glaring at us in a trance like state. Lets just say I had never seen someones face go that red before. We both found it to be funny at the time though I don’t think he saw the light of day for at least a month after that incident. Ha-Ha

Anyone who knows him, knows that he will go out of his way to ensure everyone is having a laugh. Even at his own expense, he wants to ensure everyone is having a great time.

He has taken on many challenges, and succeeded many times. Not by chance, but by perseverance and heart. Anyone who knows (Insert name), knows he is full of heart.

So on this milestone may you continue to strive for all that you want and just wanted to let you know that I am grateful to have such a great friend like you. Happy Birthday.

Birthday speech example 14 – 21st birthday speech

Yay! Im finally legal! Wow, this has been a long time coming for me, I mean now i can have a drink… Legally! Ha-Ha! Mum doesn’t seem to impressed!

Firstly I’d like to give a massive shout out to my parents, for not only raising such an awesome child, Ha-Ha! But also for making me who I am, and making this beautiful day happen. To my beautiful family members who cooked up all this beautiful food and helped to decorate this place, thank you so much, it looks absolutely beautiful.

To my wacky and crazy friends. You are all a bad influence on me and I thank you for that. Don’t worry mum, i’m only joking… It’s more like the other way around… Ha-Ha! As I get older, I begin to appreciate the significance of true family and friends in one’s life. I have to say that I couldn’t consider myself any luckier to have all of you in my life.

So anyway, let’s get out the champagne and celebrate my 21st birthday!

Birthday speech example 15 – 40th birthday speech

I can’t believe my 30’s have left me… I think it’s about time I started acting more serious and more so, my age… Well, maybe after tonight…

I remember when I was much younger, I would look at someone who was 40 and say to myself, that’s an old person. Now that I have turned the big 4-0! I now realise it was just an old person who was trying to figure out where the hell all the time went! Ha-Ha! I guess time flies when you’re having fun. Well I Know it’s definitely true for me. I’ll tell you why.

Firstly I have an amazing wife who is nothing but a bundle of joy to be around, and is able to always find a way to put a smile on my face.

Secondly I have been blessed with two beautiful boys who are an absolute pain in my ass, Ha-Ha! Though I do love so dearly! Apart from my gorgeous wife, I never thought I would love these boys so much, as much as I do. It must be because they remind me so much of me when I was growing up… Ha-Ha!

And thirdly… To all of you beautiful people standing here before me today. How can I not enjoy having each and every one of you in my life. I mean how lucky can a man get to have such funny, supportive and caring friends. Blessed is the word I use to describe having all of you be apart of my journey through life. Thank you all for being here today. Its is honestly an honour to celebrate this day with all of you here tonight.

Anyway, enough with all this sentimental crap, let’s pump the music back up, all grab a drink and at least let me celebrate being 39 one more time! Ha-Ha! Thank you!

Birthday speech example 16 – 50th birthday speech

Wow, how time flies! It’s only yesterday I can remember starting my first job at McDonalds where I met my best friend. And now I have a glass of champagne in my hand, celebrating my 50th birthday in front of all of you amazing people.

Where do I start? Firstly I need to give a massive shout out to my beautiful wife who made tonight happen. To not only organise all of this, but also keep it a secret from me which I am blown away how much effort she put in. The amount of detail she has put into this venue is incredible. Such an amazing woman, and I mean look at her, even after all these years, she is still a stunner!

To my two boys, I am proud of both of you and must say you are both still a pain in my ass. Must be because you remind me of when I was a kid growing up. Ha-Ha, they do say that karma eventually comes around. I can now understand what I put my parents through when I was growing up! But jokes aside they a great boys and couldn’t wish for any better.

Obviously I need to give a shout out to mum and dad for putting up with me over my younger years. Considering i’m sure many of you agree, I was no angel growing up. I like to think I turned out alright. Ha-Ha! Though I do have to say they were always there for support and was truly blessed to have incredible parents. I love you both.

To all my close family and friends here tonight. Thank you all for coming and most importantly, thank you for being apart of my life. All of you, in one way or another have been apart of my incredible journey of being 50 years on this earth and I wouldn’t want it any way.

So everybody grab a drink and let’s turn this music up, because i’m pretty sure you will all agree that after all these years and crazy memories, who would have known I would have made it this far. Ha-Ha! Thank you all for coming and hope you enjoy your night. Thank you!

Birthday speech example 17 – From daughter to fathers 50th birthday speech

For those of you whose memories are fading or may have had a little too much to drink tonight, we are here to celebrate the birthday of my dad. Fifty years ago today, the world was given a great gift. A gift by the name of (Insert name). The first of three children, my father was and still is, a very funny and generous man. Throughout the years, he has told many of us his overly simplistic, corny jokes which keeps us all laughing to this day. Just earlier he told me a joke and had me giggling like a little girl again. He said “What do you call a cheese that’s not yours? Nacho Cheese!”. I know, corny right? But it still does the job.

I suppose the main reason why we all have a little laugh and look forward to his humor is that he always likes to remind us that life is not meant to be taken too seriously and that laughter helps to keep us grounded. To this day, I have incorporated this philosophy into my life and I am sure all of us look forward to the energy and humor that he gives us.

Married to his high school sweetheart for 28 years, and with two pretty awesome kids, Ha-Ha. Sorry but I had to add that in. He has shown to be the best role model any family could ask for.

He has always been one to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and is not shy to have a casual drink when in good company.

On this birthday, may you enjoy your night and continue to pass on your energy and happiness for many more years to come. Happy birthday dad!

Birthday speech example 18 – 60th birthday speech

I can’t believe that as I stand here before you, I have been on this earth for 60 years. Seems like a long time, though for me, it feels like only yesterday I was celebrating my 21st birthday. I ought to cut out drinking or before I know it, i’ll be 100 soon. Ha-Ha!

For me, I have experienced both the joys and miseries of life and through it all, I have been able to take one thing from it. Regardless of life’s ups and downs, its all about making the most out of each situation and being present in the moment. Because as I get older, I begin to appreciate all of the moments life has to offer and the truth of the matter is that nothing is owed to us. For every day we wake up is a blessing. And as I am now 60 years old and CONSIDERED wise… Ha-Ha! I feel that we should make the most of each passing day, and what better way with both family and loved ones.

Lucky for me, I have been extremely fortunate to have all of my nearest and dearest to me all here tonight and I have to say, I wouldn’t want to have tonight any other way. Although it may be the wine talking, I must say that I love each and everyone of you here tonight… Especially the caterer, the food served here has been delicious! Ha-Ha! Now let’s all embarrass ourselves by having a few more drinks and getting on the dance floor!

Birthday speech example 19 – From daughter to mother

Your loving touch is like no other, your smile is brightest of all. Your heart beats love and care, but sometimes truth be told you are unfair. You are the only best friend a daughter could ask for. The sacrifices you have made to make sure I have the right path of guidance. You are the best mother a daughter could ever have. Wishing you a happy birthday with many more fun filled ones to come.

Easily Create A 50th Birthday Speech

A 50th Birthday Speech is one of the best ways to make this special 50th birthday occasion memorable, so it is best to be prepared.

This can be a most joyous and fun occasion for yourself and all those involved in the celebration.  Your words can be the glue that brings it all together.

Birthday speeches and in particular special occasion speeches like 50th birthday party speeches may make you feel apprehensive and even anxious.

If you are anxious or nervous, use these ideas  to help you.  If after reading here you would like the assistance of an expert 50th Birthday speech writer that I know personally, then this is the place to go .

So what to consider now that you are going to speak at the celebration?

A 50th Birthday Speech - Prepare

If there is a special celebration to mark the occasion of a 50th birthday and you will be giving a speech, then consider your preparation for this event.

1. Audience

Consider your audience.

  • Who will they be?
  • Are they formal or informal or casual?
  • Will they be business colleagues, or friends?
  • Is it a social group or a sport club? Is it the golf group, or tennis club?

Your audience will guide your choice of words, whether more formal or business-like, or casual.  Your consideration of your audience will also assist if you choose to use quotes or humor . Take time to reflect on who will be there.

2. Location and time

The location for the 50th Birthday celebration is important for many reasons.  A private room or area is obviously best, but be prepared for a more public area.  Find out from the organiser where the celebration is planned to be held.  Consider the following:

  • How quiet it could be for a speech
  • A private gathering will be conducive to a speech, but if amidst other patrons (eg in a Club, a Hotel or a restaurant), be prepared for competing noise, and maintaining attention.

Will those gathered be sitting for a meal or standing with finger food?

  • A long table may mean you have to stand in a central location
  • If everyone is standing for finger food (for example), how will you gain attention and be seen?

Will the celebration be during the day, morning tea, lunch, or an evening meal?  Along with the location, the time of the celebration will influence how long you speak, and maybe its contents.

Consider the location and time of the birthday celebration

3. Formal or informal

Will the celebration be formal or informal?  Will everyone be dressed up in suits and nice dresses, will it be at a workplace or in a restaurant? Will it be on a weekend which could add a more casual atmosphere? Will it be inside or outside, perhaps even around a barbeque? Considering the location and time will give you an insight into how you construct your speech.

4. How long?

Are there many speeches or will you be the only speaker?  As a guide, consider a speech between four minutes to seven minutes.

Speech Structure

1. attention.

Consider your opening words to gain the attention of all gathered.  Is it a word picture that you paint or a short story, is it a well considered quote, or a quip?  Whatever you say, make it interesting so you have your audiences' attention.

The main part of your speech is the body, and can be divided into up to three parts that interconnect, ie one part leads to the next part.

Consider three points 1, 2 and 3 to form the centre or main part (Body) of your speech.

   1.    2.    3.

Of course, you can have more than three points but you risk making your speech longer, reducing attention, and with too many points, confusing your message.  I can personally recommend three points for an effective speech.

The Body of your speech is where you tell them.

3. Conclusion

The Conclusion rounds out and summarises your speech.

This is where you tell them what you have told them.

Adding Spice with Quotes and Humor For The 50th Birthday Speech

Quotes from eminent and well known people can really assist and lift your speech.  Choose quotes that fit your audience and if possible whose author could be known by your audience.  Of course whether you use formal quotes or humor , if it fits a sporting or hobby side of the birthday person all the better and all will relate to the words.

The best and safest humor is self deprecating, so if you are giving a 50th birthday speech about yourself, this is the best humor.  Of course these examples can help , and are especially useful if you are speaking about another who is turning 50. Humor is the oil that lubricates your words, so if you can use humor certainly incorporate it in a sensitive way. You are now ready to go and deliver your 50th Birthday Speech, and you will wow them. All the very best and don't forget to enjoy the moment of the celebrations.

A 50th birthday speech is an opportunity to create a memorable moment.  Congratulations.

How to Write a Wonderful Birthday Speech

If you've been asked to write a birthday speech for a friend, colleague or family member, you're probably suffering from mixed emotions! On the one hand, it's an honor to be asked. On the other, you might feel entirely panic-stricken! What on earth will you say? How will you do the birthday boy/girl justice?

The tips on this page are designed to help - and at the end of the page, there are a couple of links to sample speeches which you can adapt and use yourself if you need to!

Tips for crafting a knockout birthday speech

Do your research.

If you're being asked to speak at a birthday celebration, then you probably know the person who is having a birthday pretty well. But that doesn't mean you can skip this all-important step!

Find out a little MORE about the guest of honor that you didn't know. Ask their friends or family members to tell you a unique story about the person you are honoring. These kinds of memories can make great material to put into your speech. Memories from family members tend to be of a touching, sensitive nature, whereas the recollections of friends are often hilarious! Using both will give you a well-rounded speech that will appeal to everyone. Plus, you'll get to know some of the guests better, so you'll be more at ease speaking in front of them.

Birthday Speech

Be Sensitive

Some people treat a birthday speech as an opportunity to roast the guest of honor. While a little bit of joking around is acceptable - and can be fun - don't try to embarrass the individual.

This is their special day, one which they should be enjoying. Make an attempt to really honor who they are, by acknowledging their contribution to your life and the lives of all the people in attendance.

Know the Audience

Ask a professional speaker, and they will tell you that you have to know the audience to deliver a great speech.

This doesn't mean that you have to be acquainted with every guest, but you should know the general make-up of the crowd.

Are the guests all family and close friends? Are there co-workers present? How about kids?

You have to be sensitive to the audience before you deliver your speech. Being prepared means inquiring about the people in attendance.

Leave on a High Note

Remember, your speech is meant to honor and celebrate someone on a momentous occasion.

Don't ramble or get muddled with complex topics. Keep the general tone light and celebratory. Be sure to tell the person a happy birthday and thank the person who invited you to speak.

Birthday parties are meant to be fun occasions. Make sure that you keep these tips in mind when you are asked to speak for friends or family members at their party.

You'll probably bring a gift to the party, but a great birthday speech may be the gift that the guest of honor will remember the most.

Birthday Speech Examples For A Festive Celebration

Birthday speech examples to honor the birthday person, often with a dash of humor

A birthday speech to acknowledge the special day of a friend, family member, or colleague introduces and honors the person and wishes them all the best of their happy day. Many birthday speech examples are available as templates to craft a birthday speech appropriate for the person celebrating.

Along with a festive song around the birthday cake, parties honoring someone celebrating a birthday often include a short toast or birthday speech. You might have the opportunity to speak if you are close to the birthday boy or girl.

How do you know if you should plan to speak? How do you choose the right words? Should you give a funny birthday speech or a serious one? As always, when you have questions, we have answers.

Table of Contents

What Do You Say In A Birthday Speech?

100th birthday deserves a birthday speech

When framing a birthday speech , you need to consider a few things:

  • Who is the guest of honor?
  • What is their relationship to you?
  • Is the birthday boy or girl more likely to appreciate a serious or funny birthday speech?
  • How many people are speaking?
  • Will there be a set time to give birthday toasts or speeches, or will it be a simple, impromptu thing?

How Do You Start Birthday Speech Examples?

Starting a memorable occasion speech is especially easy if you are the first (or only) speaker. Then, a simple “good morning,” “good afternoon”, or “good evening” is an appropriate way to greet the guests. Once you give that traditional greeting, jump into what you want to say.

“We are gathered here tonight for a birthday celebration to honor our close friend (name). Growing up with (name), I found myself wondering if we would see our 60th birthdays.

Remember riding our dirt bikes? Jumping off of the roof into your aunt’s pool? And how could we forget our 21st birthday? But the point is we survived youth craziness, and here we are. Let’s all raise a glass to (name) on his special day. Happy birthday, my friend.”

What Do You Say In A Birthday Speech If You Are A Parent?

If you are the parent, are you hosting the event for your son or daughter? Certain milestone birthdays, such as the 16th or 18th, might still require a parent to host.

A parent giving a birthday speech might thank all of the wonderful people for coming to celebrate their son or daughter’s birthday. How you word the rest of the speech depends on how close your relationship is with your child and your child’s gender and age.

For example, a dad talking about his little girl at her Quinceanera will acknowledge that his daughter is now considered a woman. The speech will include points of pride and love for his daughter. At a Quinceanera, a tradition in Hispanic culture that happens on a young woman’s 15th birthday, it is tradition for many guests to give a short speech.

Quinceanera cake

Of course, there are occasions in most cultures where a parent would give a birthday speech. Many young women celebrate a Sweet Sixteen with a party. Since most mothers hope to be their daughter’s best friend one day, this party is a lovely time for a mother to state this hope.

Here is an example birthday speech from a mom for her daughter’s sweet sixteen,

“Thank you for coming to (name’s) sweet sixteen party. My little girl is practically grown up now, and it is hard to believe because it all happened in the blink of an eye. I want to express my birthday wishes to (name). We have built many beautiful memories over your lifetime, (name).

You have grown into a beautiful young woman and quickly moved from being my daughter to being a great friend. I want to extend birthday wishes on behalf of your dad and me. Happy birthday, princess.”

What Should I Say In A Birthday Speech For A Coworker?

BIrthday speech examples - coworker

When celebrating a coworker’s birthday, think about your relationship before making a speech and offering a toast. It might be appropriate for you to talk about how much positive energy they add to the workplace. Another tactic could be to discuss how they are such a team player.

Never bring up anything negative at a person’s birthday party. If you find them annoying or lazy as a coworker, say nothing.

What Should I Say In My Friend’s Birthday Speech?

If it is your best friend’s birthday, there are many angles to approach for giving a great birthday speech. First, you might share some  fun stories.  This is especially great if you have been friends for a long time and have some  great memories  to talk about. Using  touching quotes  is another way to approach the speech.

While certain birthdays are conducive to poking fun about the person’s age, we want to caution you that not everyone takes these well. If your friend seems to be struggling with age, sharing stories might be more appropriate than pulling  out the “old fart” jokes.  Bring out the hilarity and jabs for friends who love a  good roasting !

Do You Focus On Age In A Birthday Speech?

You certainly can focus on age in a birthday speech, but you don’t have to. If the person’s age seems essential to the angle you are taking in your remarks, mention it. However, you don’t need to.

BIrthday speech examples - no need to mention age

What Do You Include In Speeches For Milestone Birthdays?

  • 16th Birthday:  The 16th birthday , called a sweet sixteen for girls, should include something about the guest of honor practically being an adult.
  • 18th Birthday:  As the official entry into adulthood in many countries, the 18th birthday is a big one. Make sure to recognize this in any birthday speech.
  • 21st Birthday:  Even though people can legally drink alcohol at much younger ages in other countries, in the United States, this is the magic number for being able to drink. For this reason, this birthday is often accompanied by a party. A parent often will recognize that fact in a speech or toast .
  • 30th Birthday:  Also called the “dirty thirty,” this is a fun milestone birthday to celebrate what many see as the end of their youth. Speeches and toasts for this birthday typically include birthday quotes about getting older and recognition of the next stage of life. You certainly can use some funny one-liner jokes, quotes, or tidbits.
  • 40th Birthday:  Middle age is between 40 and 50, so this birthday is often a sensitive one, especially for women. It is always appropriate to wish the birthday person a long life and health. If you know the person well enough to be sure they will handle gentle ribbing well, you could make some “getting old” jokes in your speech.
  • 50th Birthday:  When giving a 50th birthday speech, people commonly start to make “old fart” jokes and give gag birthday gifts. Everything “over the hill” is appropriate for celebrating a loved one’s “Happy 50th birthday.”
  • 60th Birthday:  Wishing someone good health and happiness as they turn 60 are relevant topics for this birthday speech. Another birthday where people often joke about how old the person is, don’t be surprised if the birthday cake’s theme is “older than dirt.” When giving a speech at a milestone birthday for someone older, take your cues from others. If the guest of honor is struggling with getting older or in poor health, give a touching speech rather than one full of jokes.
  •   100th Birthday:  Living this long is a very big deal, and a 100th birthday is likely to be met with many people who want to say a few words. At this age, leave all jokes aside. Celebrate the centenarian’s life with birthday quotes and stories of special places and events you have seen together.

“Hello everyone! Thank you all for coming to celebrate my birthday. Another year has passed, and I’m grateful for all the wonderful experiences and lessons learned. I’ve had my share of ups and downs, but with amazing friends and family like you, every challenge seems easier.

This year, I’ve decided to embrace new adventures and maybe even pick up a hobby that doesn’t involve Netflix. To those who’ve supported me, laughed with me, and shared these moments, thank you. Here’s to another year of fun, growth, and creating more memories together. Cheers to all of you, and happy birthday to me!”

  • The Optimistic Outlook

“Hello everyone! First, let me thank you all for being here to celebrate my birthday. It’s been a fantastic year, filled with laughter, a few tears, and a lot of personal growth. I’ve decided that this year, I’ll focus on positivity and embracing life’s surprises.

I’m excited for what’s to come, and with friends and family like you by my side, I know it’s going to be an incredible journey. So, let’s raise a glass to making every moment count and to cherishing the amazing people around us. Cheers, and happy birthday to me!”

  • The Lighthearted Take

“Hey, everyone! Thanks for joining my birthday bash. It’s another year older, wiser, and hopefully funnier. I’ve been reflecting on the past year and realized I should’ve bought stock in coffee and stress balls. But hey, I made it!

This year, my goals are simple: more adventures, less worrying, and maybe learning to cook something that isn’t cereal. Thanks to each of you for the laughs, support, and unforgettable moments. Let’s make this year even better. Here’s to good times, great friends, and celebrating every little victory. Cheers to another fabulous year, and happy birthday to me!”

  • Conclusion:  Every speech needs to be wrapped up. You might do this by offering up a birthday toast or simply by giving a closing remark like,  “I am so blessed to be your friend, (name) and hope you have a beautiful celebration.”

Examples Of Funny Birthday Speeches

Self-deprecating humor.

“They say you don’t truly appreciate your youth until it’s gone. Well, guess what? I’m here to appreciate my ever-lasting youth… which everyone keeps mistaking for middle age!”

“They say you don’t get older, you just level up in life. Well, consider me a level-grinding champion because another year has flown by! But hey, at least the high score for wrinkles keeps getting higher!”

Poking Fun At The Guest Of Honor’s Age

“I wasn’t sure what kind of cake to get [Name] this year.  One with a ton of candles seemed a bit of a fire hazard, so I went with [playful suggestion of a much smaller cake or alternative dessert].  But hey, at least you’re getting closer to unlocking the senior discounts, right?”

“Happy Birthday to [Name]! They may not be jumping hurdles these days, but hey, at least they can still appreciate a good nap. Here’s to celebrating another year of wisdom, experience, and strategically placed furniture for optimal lounging!”

Embarrassing Story

“Happy Birthday, [Name]! They may be a culinary genius now, but there was definitely that time you tried to make [insert dish] for the family dinner, and it ended up looking (and smelling) like something out of a science experiment. Let’s just say takeout saved the day! But hey, at least you learned a valuable lesson in the kitchen (and maybe a newfound respect for following recipes).”

Funny Anecdote About The Gift

“Hi everyone! We’re all here to celebrate [Name]’s birthday, and we all know that [Name] loves a good lazy day. So, we thought, why not embrace that passion to the fullest? Introducing the Ultimate Lazy Day Kit! Inside, you’ll find a pair of the fluffiest socks known to humankind, a blanket that feels like a hug from a cloud, and a selection of snacks that require zero effort to consume.

Oh, and the pièce de résistance: a remote control holder so you never have to get up to look for it again. Because, let’s be honest, if anyone deserves to chill in maximum comfort, it’s you, [Name].

Playful Exaggeration

“ Today, we gather to celebrate [Name], our very own tech wizard. If your computer crashes, your phone dies, or your Wi-Fi goes down, [Name] is the first person we call. It’s like they were born with a microchip in their brain.

So, to make sure you stay at the top of your game, we’ve got you the latest gadgetry and a year’s subscription to ‘Tech Wizard Monthly.’ [Name], your ability to fix anything with a screen is nothing short of magical, and we can’t wait to see what tech sorcery you perform next. Happy Birthday, and may your gadgets always be cutting-edge!”

Remember that any stories you choose to tell should highlight the guest of honor’s good qualities, even if they’re embarrassing. You should ideally get their permission to tell the story beforehand. Remember to keep it lighthearted and avoid anything that could be hurtful.

How Do You Say Thank You For A Birthday Speech?

As the guest of honor, you will be expected to say a few words at your own birthday celebration . Acknowledging those who have shared kind words and stories about you is appropriate. This does not have to be long. You can say,  “I appreciate everyone for coming to share in my special day, especially everyone who said such lovely things about me. Thank you all for coming.”

You should also acknowledge whoever hosted the party. For example,  “Thank you to my husband and best friend for throwing this lovely surprise party for me. I appreciate all the work that went into planning every detail, from the venue to the food to everyone who spoke. I appreciate you all.”

How to Write a 50th Birthday Speech

...

When celebrating the 50th birthday of a friend or loved one, you want to make sure everything goes perfectly before, during and after the party. A main part of the celebration may be speeches or toasts about the guest of honor. If you've been invited to give one of these speeches, then you should write out what you want to say beforehand. You may end up improvising a little on the big day, but actually writing the speech will help you remember what you want to say and can also make you less nervous come speech time.

...

Keep your 50th birthday speech about three minutes in length. This is plenty of time to say something special, but not so long that the other guests start to get bored.

Video of the Day

...

Start your speech off with a brief introduction of who you are and how you are related to the guest of honor. You should also thank everyone for being there with you to celebrate.

...

Fit the main part of your speech to complement the personality of the guest of honor. If the person has a sense of humor, throw in a funny anecdote or joke. If the person is more old fashioned and traditional, stick with a heartwarming and cheerful speech that focuses on their good qualities. Always include something about how much the person means to you and perhaps also how they have positively impacted your life.

...

End your speech by asking that all attendees raise their glasses to or applaud the guest of honor, depending on what's appropriate.

...

Practice your 50th birthday speech before the big day. This will help you remember it and could also calm your nerves. Practicing in front of another person a few times will be most effective.

The tone is personal, congratulatory, lighthearted and sincere. So, come up with nice entertaining birthday thoughts, funny remarks and tell humorous stories or even jokes.

birthday speech

A guest can roast the celebrated person a little bit with giving special birthday gifts. But don’t go to far. How far you can go depends on the ambiance of the occasion.

So, it is good to know who is on the guest list:

  • Do they know each other?
  • How close to the celebrant are they?

Okay, I’ve made my point: don’t include insulting or smutty public speaking speech content. After all, it’s a happy day for she / he is a jolly good fellow  Just a small note before we start: were I wrote She or Her in my free birthday writing templates, you can read He or Him also.

Can We Write Your Speech?

Get your audience blown away with help from a professional speechwriter. Free proofreading and copy-editing included.

Pick out the ones you like. These are sample speech topics. If you are the celebrant then speak after all other speakers. Keep your speech short.

  • Welcome and thank all the guests for attending this beautiful party celebration.
  • Thank all for their party gifts and best wishes.
  • Thank the family members who have organized the party. Especially if it is a surprise party.
  • Look back at the past. Mention one or two important milestones in your life. E.g. your partner, the birth of your children or their graduation, memorable moments with friends, trips around the world, special projects, hobbies, etc. Warm and funny birthday speech topics about family ties always do the trick.
  • Thank all with one entertaining sentence, in which you capture the importance of your family and friends.
  • Tell the attendants about your plans and hopes.
  • What do you want to realize?
  • What do you want to change? And why?

And those popular and famous speech topics bring me to the next birthday gifts idea.

  • If it is a very special event – you reached a special age, for example – your 30th, 40th of 50th birthday – then pay attention to it. Tell a joke about people who reached this age related to the little surprise you want to hand over.

Otherwise, mention certain circumstances if they occur and influence the events. But do not sound sad, try to approach them in a positive way.

  • End your speech with praising the guests. Just say you hope that they will be back. At the party next year…

These topic ideas are suitable for every public speaking job.

INTRODUCTION

  • Thank for the invitation to be guest.
  • Thank for the invitation to give a birthday speech.
  • Congratulate the person who enjoys all as center of the attention.

THE PARTY ITSELF

  • Mention a nice, funny or emotional moment at the annivesary till now.
  • If you are one of the people who organized the party: look ahead. What’s coming up next? Lunch, dinner, you are moving to another location, room or place later this day or evening, other speakers, maybe mystery guest at the annivesary?
  • Mention the special circumstances, if appropriate. For instance think about the weather, the location, the number of people who are attending the birthday party, and so on. Look around and use your imagination.
  • What age? Is it a jubilee year? Is it a 18th, 21st, 40th, 50th, 60th or a 70th birthday speech, or even a 80th, 90th or 100th? Did she said something herself about reaching this age? Mention this unique number and its merits and uniqueness.
  • What happened today in history?
  • Are there memorable events on the date of birth?
  • Was she born at a special place?
  • Is she happily married? Describe this relationship.
  • Children, grandchildren?
  • Other notewirthy developments within the scope of the family ties? Mention those themes and don’t forget to congratulate her family.

ROAST A LITTLE BIT

Tease and roast the celebrant, but avoid any personal stuff that might upset or annoy the celebrant or a guest:

  • Roast the girl or boy a little bit. Can you characterize her personality?
  • What have other people said about her?
  • Mention her talents, hobbies or passions.
  • Are there noteworthy developments or achievements in her work and career? What has she always wanted to be?
  • What are her pet peeves?
  • What are her values of life? How does she propagate them?
  • Look ahead to her future. What were and/or are her goals or hopes in life? Do you think she will succeed? Be optimistic and supportive. Or – if you want to spoof somewhat – tell your disagreeing point of view with a wink …
  • Recapitulate the wishes and congratulations. Try to summarize all the best you wish in one well-meaned special speech topic statement.
  • And then of course, at last but not least, the closer: the toast. Propose a toast to the health of the girl, so to speak.
  • Give her a present or hand over the gift on behalf of all people who join. Don’t forget to tell you speak on behalf of everybody!

Have a nice party and may this information helps to enjoy preparing your birthday speech. Happy anniversary to you and to your relative or friend!

Humorous birthday toasts and quotes

Humorous birthday toasts and quotes give us a chance to laugh at the trials and tribulations of maturity.  After all, advancing birthdays are much better than the alternative.

Cupcakes with candles spelling out Happy Birthday on them.

If there's a significant birthday in your future  -- a number that ends with a zero or a five --  celebrate with guests by offering a funny birthday toast to yourself. After all, people love speakers who don't take themselves so seriously.  And if you're less than thrilled about getting another year older, remember what the late great comedian George Burns once quipped:

There's an old saying, "Life begins at 40." That's ridiculous. Life begins every morning when you wake up.

Guy with funny birthday hat and blower thing who is celebrating someone's birthday.

There are hundreds of humorous birthday toasts and quotes you can adapt. . You've no doubt heard some of these funny birthday sayings:

    Lordy Lordy -- Look who's 40     Isn't it nifty--Fred has turned 50.

Humorous birthday toasts and quotes: Adult birthdays through the decades

We could certainly slow down the aging process if it had to work its way through Congress.      -- Will Rogers

Don't worry about avoiding temptation. As you grow older, it will avoid you.      -- Winston Churchill

Maybe it's true that life begins at 60 . . . but everything else begins to wear out, fall out or spread out.      -- Phyllis Diller

By the time a man is wise enough to watch his step, he's too old to go anywhere.      -- Billy Crystal

The cardiologist's diet: if it tastes good, spit it out!

To 60 years and Social Security Guess it's time to show some maturity.

70 years and he's going strong He's still a hunk. . .perhaps not for long.

Today 50 is the new 35 and 80 is the new 60. Here's to one who does not look or act their age!

Happy birthday! Isn't it great to reach the stage of maturity when someone says, "You look good" and then adds "for your age."

Optimists drink from a glass half full; pessimists from a glass half empty. But since it's your birthday, drink as many glasses as you want.

Now you're at an age where you don't take yourself so seriously. So laugh at yourself . . . your kids do it all the time.

Another year older and wiser and bolder. Now let us give thanks for those blessings we shoulder.

It's a scientific fact that people who have more birthdays live longer.

What goes up but never comes down?  Your age.

Remember when you were 8 and couldn't wait to become a teenager? Then you wanted to be five years older and reach 18. . . the next goal was 21 and you had the world at your fingertips. But what happened at 30? Okay . . . you still looked 22.  Then at 40, not so much. And there's no need to go further. Funny how our desire to age is inversely proportional to the years since our birth.

Birthday toasts and quotes to make 'em smile

If your birthday party guests have a good sense of humor, you might want to pull out these adaptations below of popular birthday sayings and stories or check out this collection of baby boomer humor:

You're over the hill when your back goes out more than you do.     --Anonymous

Age is strictly a case of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.       -- Jack Benny

You know you're getting old when you bend down to tie your shoelaces and then think about what else you might do while you're down there.      --George Burns

The generation gap is one war in which everybody eventually changes sides.      -- Cyril Connolly

Dr. Seuss on the golden age (slightly modified from a  bawdier version) The golden years have come at last, Why don't I feel this is a blast?

I cannot see, I cannot pee. I cannot chew. What can I do?

My memory shrinks. My hearing stinks. No sense of smell... I look like hell.

My body's drooping, got trouble pooping. And people ask, "Why am I stooping?"

The golden years have come at last. The golden years can kiss my ass.

Senior life on the highway

As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his cell phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Herman, I just heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on 280. Please be careful."

"Hell," said Herman, "It's not just one car. It's hundreds of them!"

Humorous story for a birthday speech to make people laugh

Your duck is dead.

Anyone who has had any tests at the doctor's office will probably enjoy this story . . .

Vet with dead duck - AI generated

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away." The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?" "Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet.

"How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.  The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$250!" she cried, "$250 just to tell me my duck is dead!"

The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $25, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now $250."

Birthday speech: sports person.

This speech congratulates a sportsperson on his/her birthday and wishes him/her luck in his/her future. It is suitable for a family member, friend or indeed a coach/manager to give at a birthday party.

Today John has added another score to the score-board of life. He has survived another year with all its happenings, its problems and its blessings. Today we are all gathered here to celebrate his birthday and quite honestly it’s a bit like being at a cup final. There’s a lot of excitement, noise and goodwill. In other words all his supporters are gathered here to cheer him on to the next year and fresh endeavours.

On New Year’s Eve we look back on the past year and look forward to the next. A birthday should be no different. We are on the cusp of a new year and its time to get into training for what that new year will bring. If we judge John by his past achievements he will undoubtedly be fit and raring to go in the coming season. When I say John is sporting I mean it in the broadest sense of the word. There is not a mean bone in his body. He never cheats or fouls, or at least not when the referee is looking. Sorry John! John can always see and understand the other side. His behaviour is always that of a sportsman and a gentleman. People like John are rare these days and that’s why we are making a fuss of him tonight. The other reason is we like to party.

John may play one position in his sport but in our lives he plays many parts. He is (as applicable) a team-mate, a husband, a father, a family member or a good neighbour. In the changing rooms he is always the one to make the rest of the team laugh. He often criticises his own play but never that of anyone else. When his team is beaten you can always rely on John to lift spirits. He is very positive and upbeat.

More than anything else John has a wonderful sense of humour. He can laugh at himself too which is one of the reasons he is so popular. He likes people and it shows. He can keep a confidence better than anyone I know and he does good the way it should be done, silently and without fanfare. He has great leadership qualities.

In his lifetime he has played many games. He lost some and won some and accepted each result in the same sporting spirit. He knows excellence doesn’t come easily but he is prepared to work very hard at it He may never win an Olympic medal but he has won many hearts. Tonight he has won ours and we are very happy to share this special occasion with him. You can judge his fitness by the way he blows out the candles. I would like to point out, however John, that you are in training so please leave some of the birthday cake for the rest of us. Alcohol is, of course, strictly forbidden but you can have some orange juice.

Ladies and gentlemen or family and friends please join me in a toast to John. May he always be a winner. John!

Here’s to the sportsman amongst us Whose birthday it is today Someone who is very special Someone who joins in the fray. Who plays as hard as a good player ought Who gives his all in each match He keeps the rules while playing so hard Watch him kick, watch him run and catch. Today we’re wishing him all the best Having him in our lives has made us blessed He’s brought to our days both laughter and fun And so when tonight and this party is done We hope that the year that’s coming is glorious That he’ll be happy and, of course, victorious!

Milestone Birthday Speeches for Friends and Loved Ones

Composing a speech to celebrate a friend’s birthday, especially one that is a milestone, can sometimes prove to be an intimidating task.

Table of Contents

For 21st birthday.

Buddy, today as you transition fully into adulthood, I think I can safely speak for all of us when I say we are overjoyed to share this day with you. Additionally, we are all fully confident in your ability to not only survive but prosper on your own. That being said, I feel honored to be making this presentation not only to officiate my boy, my friend becoming a man, but also in hopes that when that prosperity does come he dare not forget me. In our teens we do a lot of dumb things, and in our twenties we sometimes do things twice as stupid, but as for someone with such a sound mind as you, I know this is going to be the best decade of your life so far. You are going to get married, you are going to start a beautiful family, and make all of the people who love and care for you, including of course myself, extremely proud. So I end this speech thankful not only for my friend reaching this notable age but also for the glorious future that awaits him.

The world can be a scary place, which is why I am more than honored to officially welcome someone as fearless as yourself into adulthood. I know what it feels like to be paralyzed with fear, and I also know what it feels like to be so confident you can take on the world, and I’m glad you naturally possess the latter frame of thought. I have no doubt, absolutely no doubt, that the world is your oyster, that if the path is not already laid for you as you tread the path to success, the angels themselves will clear the way.

For 30th Birthday

Wow, 30 years of perpetual, never-ending greatness! If I were not close enough to bear witness myself, I’m not sure I would even believe it is possible. You have always shown yourself to be beyond your years in wisdom, discipline and maturity. You have established a foundation for yourself where others have faltered. This isn’t about me overpraising you because again as your close friend I know you aren’t perfect. This is about me being excited about the future, a future with you. This is about me saying ‘wow, if he is this great now, how great will he be when he’s 40, 50 or 60?’ This is about life being a movie with you being the deserving star, and people such as myself, who will always find a way to attend your birthday celebration no matter what, always desiring a sequel.

[Name of Friend], I know I don’t often say it but your friendship is such a great blessing in my life which I shall never ever stop treasuring. You are more than just a friend; you are a role model, an icon, a living legend. You may never receive the accolades properly due to someone of your stature here on earth, but most assuredly the heavens have plenty of prizes in store for you, as is evident because you have already been receiving them. You are a person who everyone would feel greatly privileged to have as a friend.

For 40th Birthday

They say that now over half the world’s population is under the age of 30, so reaching the age of 40 is like being an elder 100 years ago. But all jokes aside, it was a privilege being your fellow journeyman as you made it through young man/womanhood into an established adult. Yes there were challenges along the way, but none that you were not able to surpass and then come out the better person as a result. Knowing that my children have someone like you to look up to as an uncle/aunt gives me full assurance that if I ever need an additional voice of wisdom to help steer them in the right direction, one is just a phone call away. And likewise it is my honor, indeed my privilege, to continue to serve as your faithful friend in any capacity you may need me. So as you continue through life’s journey to days more glorious than even those you left behind, know that I and other loved ones will be there to staunchly cheer you on every step of the way. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you an absolutely beautiful and blessed 40th birthday.

For 50th Birthday

Aging used to be something I feared until I got to know you, a person who has now reached the age of 50 while simultaneously defining what it means to age gracefully. Aging gracefully means you may see changes on the outside, but on the inside you still possess the same zest for life, if not more, than someone who is new to the world. And this is also not to insinuate that there is anything wrong with the outside, for in my humble opinion you are the personification of the age old proverb that if a person is beautiful internally, it will reflect on them externally. In other words you are aging as one is supposed to age – or let me say as we would all like to age – by becoming more beautiful, more pronounced in your ability to survive, rather than decaying. Indeed one of my greatest aspirations in life is to become more like you, to have people look at me and say, ‘What’s her secret?’ So that is why when the opportunity presented itself for me to give this speech I didn’t shy away, not only for the chance to wish you a happy birthday but also to exclaim in front of the entire interconnected world how great you are and how much you are an inspiration to the lives that you have touched. Happy 50th birthday, my dearest friend. It’s my hope and prayer that you’ll forever glitter and shine like priceless diamonds spread under the glorious rays of the sun.

Birthday Speech for Boss

Today I have come to honor one of the greatest influencers on my entire life. And when I refer to the motivation that you have instilled in me, I mean it only in a positive way, as in you have done nothing but inspire me to do great things. Yes, there were times that you barked on me so hard I felt like calling my mommy. Both those are the moments when I also learned the most about what it means to be a true professional. Indeed I will go even further and say working with you has been fun as well as educational, as you always proved more than a boss but even more-significantly a genuine friend. So on this special day, if the heavens will hear my wishes, there are two things that I humbly request. One is that you get so old that when you finally leave the mortal plane, it will be by your own desire and not by force. And second is that the special bond we have established throughout the years last for the entire duration of our lives.

Birthday Speech for a Working Partner

Birthday speech for sister.

First off let me say this is a special day to me. And I know it isn’t my birthday but rather that of my lovely sister. However, each anniversary of her life is a great cause for me to celebrate. This is because she has always been an invaluable and inseparable loved one who has been there for me. On top of that, no one knows her quite like I do, and the same goes for her childhood knowledge of me. But now looking at her as an adult – all I will say is that whenever I consider your accomplishments, I know that we share the same DNA, so I must be able to perform the same great feats also. And your future is even brighter than your present. I would adore seeing you one day with children. Or I would love watching you wholeheartedly pursue your professional endeavors. In other words, whatever road you decide to take, indeed whatever life throws at you, I am right there by your side. But now enough of the blatant as**-kissing. I think the true moment we have all been waiting for is digging into that delicious birthday cake you have baked!

Birthday speeches

There are three birthday speeches for you to read.

50th birthday speech sample

A collage of 3 birthday images celebrating 40th, 50th and 18th birthdays.

The first example is a  50th birthday speech  for a man. It is written as if from a close male friend. You could call it a loving roast!

Here's the opening sentences:

"Good evening all. It's great to have you here. Most of you know my feeling on birthdays. Generally I say, what's the big deal?

By the  time you've had over thirty, there should be a cease and desist order against them.

They're not unusual. Everybody has them and at the same rate as everybody else - one a  year. They happen whether you want them to or not.

Believe me, I know. I've had quite a few  and looking around this room I can see it's the same for others as well.

So why are we here?"

40th birthday speech example

The second example is a  40 birthday speech  for a daughter and the speech is written as if it comes from her mother.

These are the opening sentences:

"On behalf of the Martin family and Camille in particular, it is my pleasure to welcome you here tonight to her 40th birthday celebration.

We are delighted to have you with us and especial thanks to those who have traveled from afar.

Before we eat I am going to say a few words about my beautiful daughter. I've promised her two things. I'll keep it short and I won't embarrass her by telling tales she'd rather I forgot."

18th birthday speech sample

The third example is an  18th birthday speech of thanks . The speaker is thanking their family and friends for coming along to their 18th birthday celebration. It's a mix of humor and sincerity.

The speech begins like this:

"This is a moment I’ve waited a long time for. 18! I am an adult. Yep, I’ve come of age. Hard to believe, isn’t?

(Dad, you were not supposed to agree so quickly.)

I can now vote, drive a car, marry, buy alcohol, a lottery ticket and tobacco, get a tattoo, or join the military without having to ask permission. Let me see. Which one will I do first?

Perhaps a more honest question is, which of those will I continue to do without fear of getting caught?

And while you think about that, I’d like to say thank you."

Christmas speech - an office party example

Image: illustration of a man standing in his office. Text: Joe Brown's Christmas speech for the office party.

This example is a mix of notes, which the speaker Joe Brown will expand as he delivers the speech, and full text which he'll say as written. The speech follows the step by step process of an outline.

Here's an extract from the concluding sentences:

"It's been a tough year but I'm proud of what we accomplished together. Some businesses haven't been able to do what we have done.

Thanks to you we'll be going into the new year with strength, to build on our accomplishments and to consolidate our position.

Let's celebrate that. It's a gift to be grateful for."

2 short company Christmas party speech samples

Image: Colorful Christmas background with label. Text: 2 company Christmas party speeches

You have the full text of these two short speeches to read. Both come in at between 2-3 minutes when delivered.

Here's an excerpt from one of them:

"OK, let's be honest; who thought we'd be gathered together for a heigh-ho-merry-old-time back in August? Remember? How can we possibly forget?!

  • Martin and Co, one of our more significant customers, downsized their regular order by more than 50% - a move that caught us on the hop and had has us scrambling for a bit.
  • There was a little more of that, when an opportunistic phishing expedition by some very clever clowns threatened to hold us to ransom."

For more please go to: 2 short company Christmas party speech samples .

This demonstration speech covers the process involved in learning to how to leave an effective voice mail message.

Image: wall paper background saying blah, blah, blah. Text: A sample demonstration speech, plus video. How to leave a good voice mail message.

I've entered the text of the whole speech into a step by step outline template so that you can see the structure. Then I made a video (audio + slides) too, so you can hear as well as read it if you want to.

Here's the opening:

"How many important voice mail messages have you bumbled through after the beep? Does recalling them make you feel a little uncomfortable?

Yep, me too. I’ve blundered. Mumbled and muttered. If it were possible, I would have gladly saved the person I was calling the hassle of deleting those messages myself. Before they were heard."

Engagement party speeches - 5 sample toasts

Images: drawing of two young friends with quirky hats. Text:"Thankfully Bill changed his mind about girls being, as he put it aged 12, really dumb." 5 sample engagement toasts.

Here are five short (and sweet) engagement party speeches. They've been written from the point of view of a mother, a father, a friend, the groom and the bride-to-be.

The extract is the opening from the speech a mother might give:

"Mary welcome to the family!

While we're all delighted that Bill has shown such good sense in choosing you I've got an extra reason to celebrate. Finally I get a daughter! Thankfully Bill changed his mind about girls being, as he put it aged about 12, 'really dumb'."

Eulogy samples

Image: a spray of blue/violet forget-me-nots. Text: 70 + eulogy examples

We are extraordinarily blessed to be able offer over 70 eulogies for folk to read.  These have been sent in by people from all over the world who intimately understand the need to see what others have written before beginning the task of writing a eulogy for a loved one of their own.

You'll find funeral speeches for mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, wives, husbands, sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, work colleagues...

Two farewell speech examples

An example goodbye speech to colleagues .

Image: illustration of a woman waving goodbye to a departing train. Text: Words for when it's time to say goodbye.

This example farewell speech is written from the point of view of a person leaving their workplace: a goodbye speech to colleagues.  It's upbeat and follows the suggested content  guidelines you'll find when you visit the page. (There's a recording of it too.)

Here's part of the opening:

"Do you realize we've been sharing each other's company for 2920 days?

Eight years of fun times, challenging times and everything in between.

And today I am officially leaving you!"

Go to:  farewell speech example : a goodbye speech to colleagues.

A sample farewell speech for a colleague leaving

Writing a farewell speech for a colleague who is leaving can be challenging. What do you put in? What do you leave out?

My example is the result of following a start to finish 7 step process for a speech to say goodbye to a co-worker.

Here's the introductory sentences:

"Who else has been marking off the days until Sam finally leaves us? It’s sad but from next Monday there’ll be a huge hole in our team. She’ll be basking in the sun on a beach in Bali and we’ll be wondering how we’re going to manage without her..."

Golden wedding - 50th anniversary speech

Image: a mass of white field daisies

What do white daisies, finding a stray coin down the back of the sofa, and motorbikes have in common?

Yes, they're all part of a golden wedding speech.

I've written this speech example as if it's being delivered by a man called Mark, to his much-loved wife of 50 years, Sarah.

Here's an excerpt from the beginning:

"After 50 years Sarah knows I am not good at romance or speaking about love. Those kind of words always got tangled on my tongue and caught between my teeth. They never did come out right, not as I intended anyway. Even when I proposed, it came out all wrong."

An icebreaker speech for Toastmasters example

Image: paper boat sailing through ice floe Text: Master your Toastmaster Icebreaker speech. 5 ways to choose a topic & prepare your speech.

Ahh, the icebreaker speech! It's much loved by club members worldwide and whichever of the eleven Toastmaster pathways you choose when you join, this is always the first assignment.

My icebreaker example, 'Stepping up to speak out', was written to illustrate an easily followed, step by step, process for getting from topic choice to speech preparation and delivery.

The beginning of the speech goes like this:

"Would you be surprised to know I nearly didn't make it here tonight?

I wonder how many of you experienced a moment or two of panic before giving your icebreaker speech. Just nod to let me know. { pause - look around }

Thank you, that's very reassuring. You've survived, so probably I shall too.

I am here wobbling rather nervously in front of you for three main reasons which I'll share.

Here's the first."

Samples of introduction speeches

Image: line drawing of a woman with a red "hello my name is ?" sticker.

There two introduction speech examples for you to look at.

One is an example self introduction speech - the kind of brief 1-2 minute speech you are often expected to make to introduce yourself to a group of people you're meeting for the first time at some sort of workshop or similar event.

Here's the opening of that speech:

"Hi everybody!

I'm Masie Smith, Senior Marketing Executive, from Watts and Frederick in Smalltown, Bigstate.

It's great to be finally here. I've been dreaming about the opportunity and possibilities of working collectively and directly with each other for a long time now. Jane and Sam can attest to that. There's been hours put in balancing the schedules to make it happen.

Webinars and email are fine but nothing beats face to face ."

For more: self-introduction speech example

The second is an introduction speech in which you introduce a guest- speaker to an audience.

Here are the closing sentences. What's preceded them has carefully primed the audience to give the guest a warm welcome, by piling one piece of compelling biographical information on top of another.

"How she got from awkward tongue tied silence to an eloquent front line spokesperson is the story she will share with us tonight.

Ladies, I give you ... Rose Stephenson on speaking to lead."

Maid of Honor speech examples

There are three Maid of Honor (MOH) speeches for you to read: two from the point of view of a best friend, and one from the point of view of a sister.

You'll find step by step guidelines with examples to illustrate each part of the process of preparing a speech for yourself. Follow them carefully and you'll finish with a Maid of Honor speech you'll be proud to deliver.

Two Maid of Honor speech examples

Collage of 5 pictures of women and their best female friends

The first example is heartfelt, a speech written from the point of view of a close childhood friend. She's shared the best and most difficult of times with the bride.

Here are its opening sentences:

"Some one very wise, and obviously someone who knew Sonja and Mark said, “Don't marry a person you can live with. Marry somebody you can't live without."

That's what we're witnessing today – the union of two people who belong together. A perfect match!"

The second example is more light-hearted. It's a combination of sentiment and fun, and is written from the point of view of a trusted and loved friend.

Here's the beginning:

"Once in a while, in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.

That's what we're celebrating today: a story of true love, a dream come true.

My name is Felicity and it's my privilege to be Sarah’s Maid of Honor.

Sarah is my Best Friend. I know it's a cliché. However clichés become clichés for a very good reason, because they're true. She's my BFF: Best Friend Forever.

For her I would wear the gaudiest, frothiest taffeta maid of honor dress possible and still smile. Fortunately I don't have to."

For more see: Maid of Honor speech examples

A Maid of Honor speech for a sister example

Image: Bridal party. Text: Catch flowers. Eat cake. Hear me give a maid of honor speech for my sister.

The opening segment of the speech is below. It recalls a loved childhood game which unites the past and present while drawing listeners in.

"What a day, Mary!

Remember when we were kids, how we dressed up in Mom’s old party dresses? Put a white table cloth on our heads and marched around, singing, “Here comes the bride, fair fat and wide.”?

My name is Jennifer, and this beautiful woman, this stunning bride – the antithesis of “fair fat and wide” is my beloved little sister.

We laughed ourselves silly over that game. Now here we are 25 years later.

Not laughing. Mary’s not wearing a table cloth. And this time it’s for real.

I am honored to be asked to speak. Thank you."

As part of a page offering 150 one minute speech topics I wrote and then recorded three example speeches to demonstrate what you could do with a one minute speech.

One of those speeches was on the topic: 'What my work clothes say about me'.

Image: man in business dress adjusting tie. Text: What my work clothes say about me. 150 one minute speech topics.

Here is the opening two paragraphs of that speech:

"Clothes make the man.  Yes, we judge each other on what we wear. And have done forever.

For better, or for worse,  in the western working world, nothing says dependable and professional as eloquently as a  tailored grey business suit, a crisp white shirt and a pair of good shoes."

To read, and hear, all three speeches please visit: one minute speech topics *

* There is also a free downloadable printable one minute speech planner which will help  you consolidate the process of putting a speech together with minimum fuss.

A persuasive speech example

Here's a persuasive speech example using Monroe's Motivated Sequence - a five step structural pattern frequently used by professional persuaders: politicians and marketers.

The topic is somber: suicide and its impact on those left behind. The purpose of the speech is to persuade listeners to learn more about the special needs of family members, friends and colleagues in the immediate aftermath of a suicide.

sample 50th birthday speech

Here are the opening sentences:

"One fine Spring day I biked home from school and found a policemen guarding our backdoor. Through it came sounds I'll never forget; my quiet, well-mannered Mother screaming.  He said, "You can't go in."

I kicked him in the shins and did.  It was the 15th of September, three days before my thirteenth  birthday and my father was dead.  Killed by his own hand. Suicide."

A sample retirement speech

Image: back ground - definition of leave on parchment paper with multiple synonyms. Text in foreground: Leave.

This retirement speech is an example of one that could be given by a teacher who's signing off after many years service in the same school.

Here's a taste of it:

"I've been asked what I'm going to do now. I'm going to do a lot of things and very few of them conform to the notion of retirement as a time of waiting for the inevitable end. Helen Hayes, put it this way: 'People who refuse to rest honorably on their laurels when they reach “retirement” age seem very admirable to me."

Sample student council speeches

This page has everything you need to help you prepare a winning student council speech: comprehensive guidelines, a template, example speeches and a printable speech planner and outline document.

Image: row of multi-colored hands reaching upwards. Text above hands: YES.

The speaker in my first example is running for president.

Here's the opening to her speech:

"I’ve got a question for you. I’m not asking you to shout your answer out, or raise your hand. All I’m asking is that you give it room in your mind. Let it sit for a bit, and have a think about it.

My question is – do you believe like I do, that all of us deserve the opportunity to make the best of ourselves? Not second best, 3 rd , or even, highly commended. The BEST."

Get the guidelines, the template, and read the whole speech: sample Student Council speech for President

And now I've added three more sample Student Council speeches:

  • Student Council speech for Vice President
  • Student Council speech for Secretary
  • Student Council speech for Treasurer

Thank you speech sample

Image: Thank you repeated in many different fonts on parchment background scattered with stylized marigolds.

The example thank you speech expresses gratitude for being the recipient of a community service award.

"Who's considered the incredible power of thank you?  Those two words express gratitude, humility, understanding, as well as acknowledgement.

I am here with you: my family, many of my friends and colleagues, because I need to say all of that, and then some more."

You'll find the full speech, and guidelines covering how to write a speech of thanks here: thank you speech example

An example tribute speech

A tribute speech may also be a commemorative speech. That is a speech celebrating, praising or paying tribute to the memory of: a person, a group, an institution, a thing, an event or even an idea. Or it could be a eulogy or funeral speech; a speech celebrating a person's life.

This example tribute speech was written in memory of my mother, Iris.

Image:old-fashioned purple flag iris blooms. Text: A tribute speech for my mother, Iris.

"My Mother's name marked her out as the goddess of the rainbow, a messenger for the ancient Olympian gods and carrier of faith, hope and wisdom.

She was Iris. And although the meaning of her name is rich in imagery and history that wasn't why her parent's called her that. Instead it was something much closer to home.

After her birth my grandmother saw iris flowering out her bedroom window. She was named for the regal beauty of their dark purple flowers."

Example welcome speeches

There are three welcome speech examples for you to read: welcome to an event, welcome to a church, and welcome to the family. All three come with guidelines to help you prepare a good welcome speech of your own.

sample 50th birthday speech

This example  is welcoming listeners to an event.  As part of that, the special guests are mentioned, as is, an outline of what's going to happen.

This is the opening:

"Sue-Ellen Thomas, Jim Smith, Jane Brown and all of our guests, welcome.

My name is April Molloy, and it's my privilege and pleasure on behalf of Parents United to welcome you here today.

We are delighted to have you with us to participate and share in our 5th annual Children's Day. Thank you for coming. That many of you have traveled long distances to be here serves as a reminder to us all just how important our work is."

You can read the rest here:  sample welcome speech .

A church welcome speech example

This sample speech welcomes visitors to the congregation. Along with the speech you'll also find links to additional resources to assist.

Here's the opening passage:

"I want to take a moment to extend a very warm welcome to everyone who's visiting us for the first time this morning. Whether you're just having a look, or are searching out for a place to worship, we're delighted to have you here.

To give you some idea of what we're all about, I'll quickly sketch some of our foundational beliefs."

Example welcome to the family speech

This is a short, and sweet, speech welcoming a bride or groom-to-be into a family at an event arranged for that purpose. The template it uses is entirely flexible.

Mary  {Replace the name Mary with the name of the person you are welcoming}  - welcome to the family!

Family, tribe, clan, kin, group - call it what you will: it's us - all of us!

We're mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters, cousins, 3rd cousins, even 53rd cousins, old and young, generations of us, linked together through shared DNA and history.

Look around. The faces smiling back at you are now your people too."
