In order to perform well in life, our body needs energy. We get this energy from the food we eat. Without food, there will be no life. In today’s world, there are so many dishes available worldwide. Food comes in a wide variety all around the world. Dosa, Paneer, Naan, Chapati, Biryani, and more Indian delicacies are available. We are also offered western cuisines such as noodles, pasta, burgers, fries, pizzas and more dominating the food industry. In my favourite food essay, I will tell you about the food I like eating the most.

my favorite food essay

My Favorite Food

As the world is advancing day by day, it is becoming easier to get access to many kinds of food at our doorstep. Every day, we all want to consume great and delicious cuisine. There are many different varieties of food accessible all throughout the world. We all like different foods, however, my personal favourite is burgers. I have eaten many cuisines but my favourite food is definitely a burger. I cannot resist myself when it comes to burgers.

Burgers are one of the most convenient and easiest foods to eat on the fly when we’re in a hurry. We can have a burger at any time of day, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or supper, and maybe some fries and a Coke to go with it. Many restaurants are well-known for making their speciality burgers in a particular style. Preparation changes from one establishment to the next. But what exactly makes a burger taste so good? They will taste vary depending on where you go, but they are all built the same. It is made up of a bun, a ground meat patty, and various toppings like cheese, onion slices, lettuce, and other sauces.

They are so soft yet crunchy, fresh and juicy that I love eating them. Even though there are many kinds of burgers, my favourite one is a chicken burger. The chicken patty gives the burger a juicy taste and it tingles my taste buds every time I eat it. I can already smell and taste it in my mouth as soon as I walked inside McDonald’s or any other restaurant that serves chicken burgers. As soon as I take a huge mouthful of it, I forget about any problems or troubles that are going on in the outer world and concentrate my entire concentration just on my chicken burger.

I love eating a burger which is filled with cheese and vegetables . The more vegetables you add, the better it tastes. My personal favourite is lettuce. It gives the burger the right amount of freshness and crunchiness.

I always eat my burger with ketchup. Most importantly, the thing I love about eating burgers is that I get to eat French fries along with them. They work as a great side to the dish and also make my stomach full.

Even though I liked eating a burger from a famous fast food joint, nothing beats the chicken burger my mother makes at home. She prepares everything from scratch, even the burger. Thus, it is extremely fresh and healthy too.

I know and feel that burgers have the great flavour and taste that would make anyone’s stomach pleased after a long day of work. I can tell by the reactions on people’s faces when they order their preferred burger variant. Overall, I don’t believe any other fast food will taste as good as a chicken burger. It’s just difficult to think that something will triumph in the future. As a result, I consider my favourite dish to be the best ever created.

A Great Variety

Perhaps the great thing about burgers is the great variety they offer. It has options for all people, who prefer vegetarian, non-vegetarian and even vegans. Thus, you can select the patty of your burger and dive right in.

There are a large number of burger joints being started in every corner of the city, each serving a variety of their own specialised and self-curated recipes. Burgers that are health-friendly and a go-to with a diet are also being introduced by these newly upcoming burger places. There are a lot many burger cafes that give their customers the choice to create their own burgers by providing them with a choice between patties, fillings, veggies, sauces as well as the number of burger layers they want.

Even though my personal favourite is a chicken burger, I also enjoy eating cheeseburgers and vegetable burgers. For me, all burgers taste delicious. Whenever we go out to eat with friends , I always order a burger.

My friends who do not eat non-vegetarian also eat burgers thanks to the great variety it offers. When we order food at home, we make sure to offer all kinds of burgers from cheeseburgers to chicken burgers, so that we get a taste of everything in our meal. Thus, I love burgers and their great variety makes it better.

Conclusion of My Favorite Food Essay

Even though my favourite food is a burger, I enjoy other foods as well like Pizza and Pasta. However, I feel when it comes to eating daily, nothing beats homemade food. The food we eat daily is what helps us gain energy. We cannot eat our favourite food daily as it will become boring then, but our staple food is something we enjoy eating on an everyday basis.

FAQ of My Favorite Food Essay

Question 1: Why do we need food?

Answer 1: We need food because it provides nutrients, energy for activity, growth. Similarly, all functions of the body like breathing, digesting food, and keeping warm are made possible because of food. It also helps in keeping our immune system healthy.

Question 2: Should you eat your favourite food all the time?

Answer 2: No, never. Favourite foods are meant to be enjoyed when there is any special occasion, or when you are tired of your regular homemade food. Eating too much of your favourite food will make your taste buds adjust to it and eventually, it will not remain our favourite. Excess of anything is bad and the same goes for our favourite food. Thus, we must eat it occasionally so that it remains our favourite.

Question 3: Is fast food healthy? Should we not consume fast food at all?

Answer 3: Fast food is often high in calories, sodium, and harmful fat, with one meal frequently providing enough for a whole day. It is also deficient in nutrients and nearly devoid of fruit, vegetables, and fibre. That doesn’t mean you should completely avoid fast food. It is feasible to eat fast food without jeopardising your healthy diet. Take advantage of the nutritious side dishes available at many fast-food places. Look for meals that include lean proteins, vegetables, and fibre, and avoid anything that is supersized.

My Favorite Food Essay | What Makes A Favourite Food?, My Favorite Food Essay for Students and Children

March 3, 2023 by Prasanna

My Favorite Food Essay: Do you know your own favourite food? Do you like it because it tastes good or because it reminds you of home? In this essay, we shall explore what makes a particular food a favourite and why. There are many different opinions on what is a favourite food. For some people, their favourite food might be something sweet whereas for others it could be a savoury dish. Some of the most popular choices as a favourite food include pizza, burgers, sushi and pasta. In addition to this, flavours also play a role in what is a favourite food.

Some people prefer something with a strong flavour whereas others prefer something light and subtle. In addition, the variety of cuisines makes it hard for people to decide which cuisine they like best. The best way to choose a favourite food is to look at the different elements that are involved in that particular food. For example, if you would like to choose a favourite food that is sweet, then look at the numerous desserts that are available in the food market. It is also important to look at the other foods that are available so that you can make a comparison of them with your favourite food.

What are My Favourite Foods?

Thoughts that come to mind about my favourite food, nutritional value of chicken and health benefits, disadvantages of eating chicken, favourite healthy foods, conclusion on my favorite food essay, faq’s on my favorite food essay.

When it comes to my favourite foods I lean towards a bit of everything. These foods have all left a taste in my memory, whether it was the first time I had them or the 1,000th time. Some of my favourites are:

  • Cheesy Pizza
  • Salted Caramel Icecream
  • Dragon’s Teeth Cookie
  • Cheesy Popcorn
  • Red Velvet Cake
  • Eggs on a plate with toast

However, my absolute favourite food is chicken. I just love it! It’s soft, juicy, and perfectly moist. I also love how easy it is to cook with it. I also enjoy the combination of all the different flavours and textures. It’s a really versatile and easy ingredient to use, and you can put so many different flavours into something simple. It’s really good with all kinds of flavours, spices and herbs. Chicken also contains a lot of protein, which is good for my body.

When I think of chicken, the first thing that comes to mind is a warm and inviting meal. My favourite dish is chicken piccata, but I think it’s really hard to beat the classic chicken noodle soup! I’ve always loved chicken soup, ever since I was really young. My dad used to love cooking for us and he did it all the time. For example, on the weekend he would make fresh chicken soup and fried rice for us to eat. I always thought it was delicious! I’ve always liked chicken soup ever since then.

When I eat it there is a certain amount of satisfaction, and for some reason, I just can’t get enough of it! But the most important reason that I love chicken is that it reminds me of home.

Chicken is a very nutritious food that provides a variety of health benefits and is quite low in calories. It is high in protein and has all the essential amino acids. It also contains various vitamins and minerals that are important for your body. Chicken also has less fat than other types of meat, which makes it a healthier alternative. In view of the nutritional value of chicken, it is crucial that you consume it regularly if you want to remain healthy and fit.

Perception of Chicken Around The World

Chicken is a popular type of meat in most countries, and is the main source of protein for many people. It can be cooked in a variety of different ways, and it’s commonly known as the universal “fast food” because it’s fast to cook. Chicken is also a very versatile food that can be slathered with sauce and used as a meat replacement in many different recipes.

Moreover, chicken has been a staple of the diet in most cultures for centuries. It is certainly one of the most popular foods in the world, and I cannot imagine any meals without it. Most people will eat chicken as part of their daily routine. It’s a cheap, convenient, and high-quality protein that can be served with many different ingredients and spices to create delicious dishes. Cooking chicken at home is also much more fun than going out to buy expensive steaks or store-bought dishes.

For one thing, chicken is the most consumed animal source of food on the planet. Though it is healthy for humans, there are some potential dangers associated with this type of diet. Eating undercooked/ raw chicken can increase the risk of contracting salmonellosis, a bacterial infection that can cause severe diarrhoea, fever and vomiting. Symptoms can appear in as little as three to four hours after the infection. Additionally, the proteins found in the chicken are not recommended for people with kidney problems. Chicken is also low in iron, vitamin C, folate, zinc, and other important nutrients which are necessary for good health.

My Favorite Food

My favourite healthy food is tomatoes. I love tomatoes because they have a high nutrient content like vitamin C and fibre, which makes them one of the best foods to eat if you want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Tomatoes are also an excellent source of antioxidants that can help protect us from cancer and other diseases. I also ensure that I drink adequate quantities of water as it helps me stay hydrated. I also like to eat pasta, because I can eat it without feeling guilty. I know that it is healthy for me and does not have any added ingredients. This is why I feel comfortable eating it, even though I am picky about my food.

My favourite food is healthy, it’s also delicious and can be chosen in different ways. I like chicken and tomatoes because they’re nutritious. In my opinion, the healthiest food for us humans is plants. This is because our lifestyle is more sedentary and we require less calories than ever. Regardless, a healthy lifestyle is paramount and eating well is part of that. Also, a healthy diet is one that should be varied and balanced.

Question 1. What is your Favourite food?

Answer: Chicken is my favourite food because it has a high protein content and is also low in fat. It’s easy to cook, versatile and quick. All of these make it perfect for your diet. Plus it’s low in calories and has a reasonably low price tag.

Question 2. How do I write about my favourite food?

Answer: Include the name of your favourite food and provide a brief overview of the dish. Explain why it is your absolute favourite and how it relates or reminds you of something. It is also a good idea to explain why you like its taste or texture.

Question 3. What is everyone’s favourite food?

Answer: There is a lot of debate around what people’s favourite food is. There are many different opinions. Some people like to eat chicken, while others love pizza. I like both but my favourite food is chicken because it has a unique flavour and texture.

To top it all, there is lots of cheese, which is my favourite part!

My mother bakes delicious pizzas at home. On every special occasion, we all enjoy her homemade pizzas. She makes them from scratch, right from making the base. She puts lots of vegetables on top, mixed with mushrooms to make it healthier and more nutritious. I love each bite of the crispy crust with the vegetables and cheese. It is healthy and full of nutritious ingredients and also very yummy. I look forward to the days when we have pizza for dinner!

Essay on My Favourite Food 500+ Words

Food holds a special place in our hearts, and when it comes to our favorite food, it becomes a source of comfort, joy, and culinary delight. In this essay, we will explore the reasons why my favorite food holds a cherished spot in my heart, examining the flavors, memories, and cultural significance that make it so special.

The Flavors That Dance

The first reason my favorite food is so dear to me is the exquisite combination of flavors it offers. Each bite is a symphony of taste sensations, from sweet and savory to tangy and spicy. The balance of these flavors creates a culinary masterpiece that tantalizes my taste buds and leaves me craving for more. According to culinary experts, the harmony of flavors is essential for making a dish memorable.

A Taste of Childhood

My favorite food is more than just a meal; it’s a taste of my childhood. It reminds me of family gatherings, celebrations, and cozy dinners at home. The familiar aroma and taste transport me back to simpler times, evoking a sense of nostalgia and warmth. Food psychologists suggest that our favorite foods often have strong emotional connections tied to our past.

Cultural Significance

Beyond its deliciousness, my favorite food also holds cultural significance. It represents the culinary heritage of my family and community. It’s a dish that has been passed down through generations, carrying with it the traditions and flavors of my cultural background. Food anthropologists argue that food is a cultural expression, reflecting the history and identity of a group of people.

A Feast for the Senses

My favorite food is not just about taste; it’s a feast for all the senses. The vibrant colors, enticing textures, and pleasing presentation make it a visual delight. The sound of sizzling, the aroma wafting through the air, and the anticipation of that first bite engage all my senses, making the experience truly magical. According to sensory experts, our enjoyment of food is deeply tied to our sensory perceptions.

The Joy of Sharing

One of the beautiful aspects of my favorite food is that it’s often shared with loved ones. Whether it’s a family dinner, a festive occasion, or a simple gathering of friends, this food brings people together. Sharing a meal is not just about nourishment but also about building connections and creating lasting memories. Sociologists emphasize the social significance of shared meals in fostering relationships.

A Global Journey

While my favorite food holds a special place in my heart, it has also taken me on a global journey of culinary exploration. It has piqued my curiosity about different cuisines and inspired me to try new dishes from around the world. Exploring diverse flavors and culinary traditions has broadened my palate and enriched my appreciation for food. Food enthusiasts argue that trying new foods is a gateway to cultural understanding.

A Comforting Companion

In times of stress or sadness, my favorite food has been a comforting companion. Its familiar taste provides solace and a sense of reassurance. Studies in psychology suggest that comfort foods have a soothing effect on our emotions, offering a sense of security and emotional relief during difficult moments.

Conclusion of Essay on My Favourite Food

In conclusion, my favorite food is more than just a dish; it’s a symphony of flavors, a taste of cherished memories, a cultural connection, and a sensory experience. Essay On My Favourite Food Chicken For Class 6

my favorite food chicken essay

Nothing can match the level of happiness you get when you find your favorite food on the dining table. And if you’re a foodie, this moment is happy enough to make you forget every stress.

Well, I don’t about you but it happens with me every time I see a chicken dish on my dining table. I jump on with happiness and lose my patience to wait even a single moment. At times, me and my brothers fight like cats and dogs because I always pick out the largest share. Out of unnumbered of chicken dishes, I love ‘Tandoori Chicken’ the most, though I like others too. Whenever my mom asks ‘what you want to have in meal’, I vigorously shout ‘Tandoori Chicken’.

Essay On My Favourite Food Chicken

No matter, how much and how often I eat it, my hunger for Tandoori Chicken never dies. Sometimes, I get scolded that you would gain weight or fall sick eating a whole plate in one sitting but who cares as long as my favorite dish is in front of me. The more crunchy, gravy, spicy, tangy it is, the more I like it. This mouth-watering dish just drives me crazy.

People say, restaurant foods are the best but I differ. My mom cooks the best Tandoori Chicken in the world. Her cooking skill is the only reason I love this dish so much. If you haven’t tried Tandoori Chicken yet, I must say, you still don’t know what a scrumptious dish tastes like. Try this dish today and now itself. This lip-smacking dish will twist your tongue with its savory flavor.

FAQ about My Favorite Food Essay & Paragraph

We need food to provide our bodies with the nutrients and energy they require to function properly. These nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Without enough of these nutrients, our bodies can’t grow and repair tissues, produce energy, or properly regulate functions such as our immune systems and metabolism.

It’s okay to enjoy your favorite foods as part of a balanced diet, but it’s important to remember that variety is key to a healthy diet. Eating the same foods repeatedly can lead to nutrient deficiencies and make your meals less enjoyable. It’s important to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet to ensure that you’re getting all the necessary nutrients. Additionally, having a balance diet can also help prevent chronic disease.

Fast food is often high in calories, saturated fat, sugar, and sodium, which can contribute to weight gain and an increased risk of chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure when consumed in excess. It is important to be aware of the nutritional content of the fast food you are eating and make informed choices.

Eating fast food occasionally as part of a balanced diet is generally okay. However, it is not recommended to make a regular habit of eating fast food, as it can contribute to nutrient deficiencies and displace healthier food choices. Instead, it’s better to prepare meals at home using fresh, whole ingredients, which can be more nutritious and allow you to control the ingredients and portion sizes.

When writing about your favorite food, it’s important to be descriptive and use sensory language to convey the taste, texture, and appearance of the food. Here are a few tips on how to write about your favorite food:

  • Start by describing the appearance of the food. What does it look like? Is it colorful or monochromatic? Is it smooth or chunky?
  • Next, describe the texture of the food. Is it crunchy, chewy, or soft? How does it feel in your mouth?
  • Then, describe the taste and flavor of the food. What are the dominant flavors? Are they sweet, savory, spicy, or sour? Are there any unique or interesting flavors that make this food special?
  • Share the history and cultural background of the food. It can be interesting for the reader to know where it comes from and how it is traditionally consumed
  • Finally, explain why it is your favorite food. What is it about this food that you love? How does it make you feel? How often do you eat it?

Remember to be honest, specific, and use vivid language to make your writing come alive.

It is hard to make a list of the 10 most favorite foods in the world as different cultures have different tastes, preferences and cuisines. However, here is a list of some foods that are popular and well-loved globally:

  • Pizza – a dish made with a wheat flour base, topped with tomato sauce, cheese, and various toppings.

  • Pasta – a dish made from wheat flour, eggs, and water, usually served with a sauce.

Long Essay on My Favourite Food (500 Words)

Fish curry or Machher Jhol is one of the most popular and lip-smacking food items in India, especially in Bengal. I would say that it is one of my all-time favourite dishes. It is a spicy and flavourful dish that is cooked in various different styles across the country. From the classic Bengali Machher Jhol to the fiery Goan Fish Curry, every variation of this dish has its own unique taste and distinct flavour. In this essay, I will take you through the journey of Machher Jhol, from its origins to the many different variations found across the country.

Origin of Machher Jhol

Machher Jhol can trace its roots to the ancient Bengali culture, in the form of Bhapa Ilish (steamed Hilsa in a spicy mustard sauce). It is believed that the Portuguese brought this dish with them when they arrived in India, which is why it has many similarities to the Portuguese Fish Curry. This dish soon became an integral part of Bengali cuisine, with every Bengali household having their own unique recipe.

Machher Jhol has been a staple in Bengali cuisine since Macher jhol is a popular Bengali dish, originating from the eastern region of India. It is a popular dish in Bangladesh, India and Nepal. The dish is made with fish, potatoes, and a variety of spices, and is served with rice or roti. It is a beloved dish among the Bengali people, and is served in restaurants and homes alike. Its popularity has spread to other parts of the world, and is now served in some Indian and Bangladeshi restaurants abroad.

Taste and Nutrition

Machher Jhol has an intensely flavourful and aromatic taste. The combination of spices and ingredients used in the dish gives it an unmistakable flavour and aroma. Furthermore, the dish is also quite nutritious, as it is rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals.

Another reason why Machher Jhol is one of my favourite dishes is the versatility of it. You can make the dish in different ways depending on the ingredients you have. Different vegetables and fish can be used, and you can vary the spices and add different flavourings. This means you can always try something new, exploring the different flavours arising from the same set of ingredients.

Tasty as well as Healthy

Machher Jhol is also great because it is surprisingly healthy. All the ingredients provide essential vitamins and minerals, and the spices provide added health benefits such as anti-inflammatory properties. On top of that, you can use less oil when cooking this dish compared to other Indian meals. This makes it perfect for those who are calorie-conscious, or just want a healthy and nutritious meal.

The Aromatic Bengali Dish

The flavour of Machher Jhol is just heavenly. It’s a blend of sweet, spicy and tangy notes, which makes it so delicious. The aroma of the spices and the freshness of the fish and vegetables come together in a way that no other Indian dish can match. With every spoonful, you can taste the comforting yet flavourful nuances of the dish.

Short Essay on My Favorite Food For Class 4

You know how they say “home is where the heart is”? Well, my favorite food feels like a home for my taste buds. That’s right – pizza! Pizza has been my go-to since I was a kid and it still holds strong as my top pick today.

Pizza comes in all shapes and sizes – round, square, with thin crust or thick crust, and with all sorts of toppings. But for me, nothing beats the classic pepperoni pizza. The combination of tangy tomato sauce, melted cheese, and savory pepperoni never fails to make my mouth water.

What I love most about pizza is its versatility. You can have it as a snack or a full meal; you can eat it hot out of the oven or cold the next day. It’s perfect for any occasion – movie night with friends, family gatherings, or even as a quick bite on-the-go.

But it’s not just about the taste – pizza also holds a special place in my heart because of the memories associated with it. I remember how excited I used to get when my parents would order pizza for dinner, and how my siblings and I would fight over who got the biggest slice. Even now, when we gather for family dinners, pizza is always a crowd-pleaser.

As I’ve grown older, my love for pizza has only intensified. I’ve even started experimenting with different toppings – from mushrooms to olives to pineapple (yes, pineapple on pizza is amazing). But no matter how many variations I try, the classic pepperoni pizza will always hold a special place in my heart.

In conclusion, pizza is not just a food for me – it’s an experience. It brings people together and never fails to satisfy. And for that reason, it will always be my favorite food. So next time you’re debating what to have for dinner, I highly recommend you go for a slice of pizza – it’s always a good idea. So next time you’re debating what to have for dinner, I highly recommend you go for a slice of pizza – it’s always a good idea.

Essay on Favorite Food Biryani ( 150-200-250 Words ):

Alright, let’s talk about one of my favorite foods – biryani. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re definitely missing out! Biryani is a popular dish in many countries and regions such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Middle East. It consists of aromatic rice cooked with meat or vegetables and a variety of spices. There are many different variations of biryani, each with its own unique taste and flavor.

One of the reasons why I love biryani so much is because it reminds me of home. Growing up, my mom would often make biryani for special occasions or family gatherings. The delicious aroma of spices filling our kitchen would instantly make my mouth water.

But biryani is not just a dish for special occasions, it’s also a staple in many households. It’s a complete meal that is both filling and satisfying. The combination of tender meat or vegetables, flavorful rice, and aromatic spices makes for the perfect balance of textures and flavors.

What I love about biryani is that it can be customized according to personal preferences. Some people prefer chicken biryani, while others like beef or mutton biryani. There are also vegetarian options such as vegetable biryani or paneer biryani. And let’s not forget about the different types of biryani like Hyderabadi, Lucknowi, and Kolkata style.

But no matter what type of biryani you prefer, one thing is for sure – it’s a labor of love. Biryani is not something that can be whipped up quickly, it takes time and effort to prepare. The meat or vegetables need to be marinated in spices, the rice needs to be perfectly cooked, and then everything is layered together and slow-cooked for hours.

I also love how biryani brings people together. It’s a dish that is often shared with family and friends, and it’s always a hit at potlucks or dinner parties. Whenever I have biryani, it reminds me of the joy and love that comes with sharing a meal with loved ones.

In conclusion, biryani is not just a food for me, it represents my culture, my memories, and my love for food. It’s a dish that never fails to impress me with its rich flavors and textures, and I will always have a special place for it in my heart (and stomach!). So if you haven’t tried biryani yet, I highly recommend giving it a try – who knows, it might become your favorite too!

Short Essay on My Favorite Food Rice and Beans:

Rice and beans have always been a staple in my family’s diet. Growing up, I remember coming home from school to the delicious aroma of rice and beans cooking on the stove. It was a simple meal, yet it never failed to satisfy my hunger and please my taste buds.

Rice and beans are not only popular in my household but also in many other cultures around the world. In fact, it is considered a complete protein when combined together and is often referred to as the “perfect food”. However, what makes rice and beans so special to me goes beyond its nutritional value.

For starters, rice and beans are extremely versatile. They can be served in various ways – from a hearty bowl of stew to a simple side dish. I love experimenting with different flavors and spices to create new and unique variations of this classic dish. It never gets boring!

Moreover, rice and beans are budget-friendly and can easily feed a large family. As someone who comes from a big family, I appreciate the fact that this dish is not only delicious but also cost-effective.

But what truly makes rice and beans my favorite food is the sentimental value it holds. It reminds me of my childhood, family gatherings, and special occasions. It is a dish that brings people together, and I have fond memories of sitting around the table with my loved ones sharing stories over a steaming plate of rice and beans.

In addition to its delicious taste and versatility, rice and beans also have numerous health benefits. They are high in fiber, protein, and essential vitamins and minerals. They are also gluten-free, making them a perfect choice for those with dietary restrictions.

Overall, rice and beans hold a special place in my heart and will always be my favorite food. It not only satisfies my taste buds but also brings back cherished memories and nourishes my body. Whether it’s a simple weeknight dinner or a special occasion, rice and beans will always have a spot on my plate. So, the next time you are looking for a delicious and nutritious meal, give rice and beans a try – you won’t be disappointed!

Our neighborhood is our village. We often have meals together and take turns looking after everyone's kids.

  • I live with my husband and our four kids on a close-knit block of families.
  • Our neighbors are our village, helping us share responsibilities and occasionally babysit.
  • We are all on this together, and the support is incredible.

Insider Today

"I'm grilling chicken tonight. Who's in for a block family dinner?"

"We'll be there. I'll bring a salad."

"Yup! We've got ice cream sandwiches for the kids."

This is a typical text exchange in our neighborhood group chat. My husband, our four kids, and I live on a close-knit block where families share kid responsibilities, cook occasional dinners for one another, and help when couples can't find a babysitter .

Most people say it takes a village to raise a family , but every village can look different. For us, our neighbors are our main support — and we wouldn't have it any other way.

We watch each other's kids on a regular basis

A few years ago, one of the moms on our block organized a brilliant rotation for five of us families. Each couple would take turns hosting all the kids for a few hours on Saturday morning. The other couples could use their kid-free time however they wanted: to get chores done, walk to a coffee shop together, or sit and read a book in silence. The following Saturday, a different couple would have the kids.

Related stories

While having all nine kids at once may seem like an enormous undertaking, the kids played well together most of the time while the hosts kept watch and provided snacks. Not only did it give parents the gift of time on the weekend, but it also helped us get to know each other and each other's kids better. The kids became closer friends, too.

Now, it's common for kids to be at each other's houses.

Someone might text, "we can't find a sitter for Saturday night. Anyone up for taking two extra kids from 5-8:30?" Or "Sam is coming to see if your boys can play. If that's not okay, just send him or all of them here."

The idea is that we're all in this together and that, surprisingly, more kids can ease the load.

When neighbors come to our house, my kids love it and are fully occupied. I can finally prep dinner or sneak in a workout . And if I need someone to watch my kids while I run to an appointment or so I can take a nap while my newborn sleeps, there's usually someone on the block who's happy to take my kids.

We rotate cooking 'family dinners'

On lazy Sunday afternoons when the kids ride bikes on the sidewalk and the parents chitchat on a nearby porch, someone might ask, "What're you doing for dinner?" Most of us respond with a shoulder shrug, wishing we didn't have to go home and figure out what to make.

The convo might lead to a large pizza order for all, brats on the grill in someone's backyard, or a hodgepodge potluck. During the cooler months, someone might whip up a double batch of chili or chicken noodle soup, and text the group: "Who's in?"

Our "street family dinners" don't have to be fancy — although there are some excellent chefs on the block. The shared meals give us a way to gather and reduce the burden of cooking every night for our own families.

The kids usually run off and play after 10 minutes at the table, leaving us parents to kick back and chat over a beer or batch cocktail. Those nights are filled with laughter, stories about raising our families, kid shenanigans, and a beautiful reminder that we aren't alone during these amazing yet arduous years of parenting.

Parents take turns watching the kids in the summer to help with childcare

When school is out or our college-aged nanny is gone for the summer, parents on the block chip in to help with gaps in childcare. Between remote workers, part-time workers, and teachers, there are a few parents who rotate watching kids during the summer.

In the afternoons, first-grader Sam might knock on our door, looking for my boys. The three of them will play together for hours, switching between our backyard, the basement, and Sam's house — a favorite spot with mountains of monster trucks and Legos. The downtime gives me a chance to finish an article, send out invoices, or sweep the floors.

Another dad might take an extra kid or two on a beach trip while their parents are at the office. Many times, this is better for everyone: the kids have someone their age to play with, so the adult on duty has less entertaining to do. The informal sharing doesn't cover the full lack of childcare, but it eases the burden.

We share kid clothes, shoes, puzzles, and more

My neighbor Carolyn often drops off shirts and leggings that no longer fit her daughter and shoes and shorts that her son has outgrown. Katelyn brings my kids puzzles and games, and Jess recently gifted me a car seat.

I'm incredibly grateful for the cost-savings to my family and the time saved from not having to go shopping. But it's especially fun to watch kids on the block cycle through old favorites. The sentimental pieces are worn again, bringing them new life and time in the sun.

Our neighborhood isn't perfect, and sometimes the workload may be uneven, but our neighborhood village supports us and is there for us. Someone always has my back or is looking out for us.

The sharedness of family life makes it lighter, sweeter, and much more enjoyable. Most of all, we're making memories and relationships we'll cherish for the rest of our lives.

My wish for Singapore:

I wish its people will not take the Singapore story for granted, and that Singaporeans will unite to overcome challenges ahead.

Singer-songwriter who bridges Japan and Singapore through music and culture

Born in Japan, sings about Singapore

by Walter Sim , Japan Correspondent

TOKYO – Meet the first Japanese “Singapore Girl”.

Ms Sachiyo Nakagaki was only six years old when, as a child model, she appeared in a 1974 advertisement for Singapore Airlines to introduce its then twice-daily flights between Japan and Singapore.

She also played the role of a “flower girl”, welcoming Japanese dignitaries at the airport.

Fifty years on, she continues to be active in bridging the two nations through her music, as a singer-songwriter, and through seminars on living and working in either country, as a cultural ambassador. As a performer, she goes only by her first name, Sachiyo.

“I think this is my calling,” she told The Straits Times over yuan yang, a drink that mixes coffee with tea, at Ya Kun Kaya Toast’s only outlet in Tokyo.

“I've always been very conscious of the role I can play – even in kindergarten, when anti-Japanese sentiment was still strong (in Singapore) after the war,” she said, citing how taxi drivers refused to pick up her family when they realised they were Japanese.

To Ms Nakagaki, now 56, Japan is her sokoku (祖国, or country of origin) while Singapore is her bokoku (母国, or homeland). She has spent almost half her life living in Singapore: from the time she was four to when she was 15, and then again from 2009 to 2022.

my favorite food chicken essay

It thus may come as no surprise that in 2022, she released a Japanese cover of Home, sung by Kit Chan for the 1998 National Day celebrations. Ms Nakagaki had the approval of Dick Lee, who wrote the song.

Her version (below) is titled Furusato, a synonym of “home town” that evokes multiple meanings of “beauty, faces, memories, nostalgia”.

“Both countries are equally precious to me. I really liked the warmth of a melody that represents Singapore, and I wanted to convey the deep emotion in native Japanese,” she said.

Ms Nakagaki grew up in Singapore, where her engineer father relocated for work. She was so shy that her parents decided she should be a child model to help her become more outgoing.

At 15, she returned to Tokyo, where she attended high school and university.

She was clearly enamoured of Singlish, on which she wrote a 60-page final-year thesis as an undergraduate in Hosei University’s English programme. She recalls drawing the conclusion in her essay that “Singlish is the epitome of the Singaporean identity”.

Hello, hello, hello! My name is Sachiyo.

I’m a Japanese singer-songwriter but I was raised in Singapore.

My favourite Singlish is “makan” and “shiok”

because I like eating.

She also appreciates how the city-state’s people identify themselves first as Singaporeans rather than by their ethnicity and that “differences and diversity are considered a natural order of things”.

While the interview with ST was mostly in Japanese, she continued to pepper her English with the Singlish terms lah, lor and leh.

She sings in four languages – Japanese, English, Mandarin and Malay – and her songs include music from instruments like the erhu or tabla, which are unfamiliar to many Japanese.

my favorite food chicken essay

“I was surrounded by Chinese, Malay and Tamil songs, so that environment naturally inspired me,” she said.

Her debut album Sachiyo Sings Singapore (2003) was followed by Rojak (2006). She also hosted a weekly radio show over 15 months titled Rojak Rojak, through which she introduced Singaporean culture and music, and even taught Singlish to listeners.

But she began feeling pigeonholed. She said: “I was OK being seen as carrying the ‘Singapore’ signboard, but I was hardly asked for non-Singapore-related events. I felt very conflicted.”

She looked no further than Singapore as a base in 2009, hoping that a more international environment would break her out of the rut.

my favorite food chicken essay

In Singapore, she released new music and performed at venues such as the Esplanade and Victoria Concert Hall.

Yet, she was disappointed by how the arts appeared to be dismissed by some in Singapore - there were those who tried to bargain with her about her fees and some who considered jazz as music that allows people to talk while it is being played. There were also strict regulations, such as having to translate all her lyrics and submitting them to the authorities.

The rising cost of living was another push factor that made her decide to move back to Tokyo.

Now, she has turned her experiences into workshops for corporates and schools – both in Singapore and Japan – that are keen to learn more about the unique customs, etiquette and laws of either country.

Her dream, however, is naturally related to music: She hopes to perform with a Singapore orchestra some day.

I hope for continued growth and prosperity for Singapore, with a focus on sustainability and inclusivity. I love to believe that the nation would keep inspiring the world with its resilience and forward-thinking spirit.

Architect who wants to create Singapore-inspired spaces in India

Struck by HDB: Designing public housing and green buildings in India

by Rohini Mohan , India Correspondent

BENGALURU – When Mr Saptarshi Chakrabarti worked in Singapore 20 years ago, he had what he calls “a breakthrough”.

Like most Indians visiting Singapore, he was struck by the ubiquitous Housing Board buildings. Multi-storey, government-managed public housing was not common back home.

Beyond simply observing public housing, he was also able to look under the hood of the project. As a principal architect for four years at Surbana Jurong, a Singapore urban development consultancy, he got a crash course in the city-state’s approach to public housing and city design.

my favorite food chicken essay

“The HDB sort of ongoing government project is rare in India, where cities grow more organically, and affordable housing is often the last priority,” said Mr Chakrabarti, now 44.

In 2006, he was part of a team in Surbana International, Singapore, which designed an affordable mass housing project for India. Funded by the local government in Kolkata’s New Town, then an upcoming suburb, the 81ha project (pictured below), which accommodates 20,000 low and middle-income families, remains one of his proudest achievements.

my favorite food chicken essay

“I learnt how to meticulously integrate sustainability in urban design from the conceptual stage to project completion,” he said, extolling the use of affordable, eco-friendly and long-lasting materials and features such as open courtyards, green cover and recreational spaces that are often ignored in public housing projects in India.

“It was eye-opening. I carry those learnings into every building I design today,” he told The Straits Times in a video call.

Mr Chakrabarti is now working on a residential project for a major Indian steel conglomerate, where he incorporates ideas gleaned from Singapore, such as having community gardens and public markets.

He said he enjoys making affordable housing which is much needed in India, and it is also one of his strengths.

His design has other influences too, from Indian to western. But Singapore’s blend of diverse ethnicities and traditions “profoundly influenced my approach to urban planning and design”.

He found Singapore’s public spaces such as Gardens by the Bay and East Coast Park “amazingly inclusive”, as they encouraged social interaction and community activities.

He was also inspired by vibrant hawker centres and Singapore’s celebration of all ethnic festivals, and wanted to create welcoming spaces in India that embrace diversity and social harmony.

my favorite food chicken essay

In subsequent years, when he visited Singapore, he noticed more greenery everywhere.

He was gobsmacked by the “hotel in a garden” concept of Parkroyal Collection Pickering, which uses solar power and rain sensors and practises water conservation. He picked up tips on the energy efficiency of double-glazed and low-emissivity glass from the curved condominium towers of Reflections at Keppel Bay.

He also saw the marriage of cost-cutting and comfort in the healthcare facility in the middle floors of the Kampung Admiralty integrated development, whose inner courtyard keeps the place cool even without air-conditioning.

Singapore was the first country to make it mandatory by legislation for new buildings with a gross floor area of 5,000 sq m or more to achieve a minimum green certification.

Mr Chakrabarti began to incorporate environment-friendly concepts into his designs too. This led to projects like a sustainable all-steel data centre in Bengaluru, a green information technology park and an upcoming project experimenting with making walls using PUF panels, which reduce energy consumption for heating or cooling.

my favorite food chicken essay

He now lives in Kolkata in eastern India. Every day, the bustling metropolis reminds him that the Singaporean vision can’t simply be transplanted there.

“Singapore’s green building designs are suited for its tropical climate, but India’s diverse weather conditions pose a challenge. Green roofs and facades require different maintenance strategies in regions with extreme heat, heavy rainfall or a cold climate,” said the architect, who is also a guest lecturer at many universities.

Other challenges he faces include India’s complex and varied building codes and time-consuming approvals. He has also struggled to ensure the steady supply of advanced materials in remote areas, find professionals trained in the latest technologies, and most of all, educate price-conscious developers on the long-term benefits of green buildings.

“India has a long way to go, but there is growing awareness that green buildings are not only a necessity to battle climate change, but they are also more durable and affordable,” he said.

As we try to spread awareness of Singapore’s hawker culture to South Koreans, we wish for Singapore to embrace its culture more strongly than ever. We hope the younger generation will see its value and take over and be proud of its history.

Chef strives to persuade South Koreans that chicken eaten cold can be delicious

by Wendy Teo , South Korea Correspondent

SEOUL – It was a whirlwind romance. First with the girl, then with Singapore’s chicken rice.

South Korean chef Jacob Jung, 29, went to Singapore for the first time in September 2023 to meet his Indonesian then girlfriend’s parents, who live there, to ask them for her hand in marriage.

It was on this trip that he tried Hainanese chicken rice for the first time, and it blew his mind.

“In South Korea, we have samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) and baeksuk (chicken soup boiled with ginger and onion) and the meat is always tough and chewy. But with Hainanese chicken rice, I was shocked at how tender and juicy the meat was, (and) the rice was so flavourful!”

He scored two wins that trip – the green light to marry Ms Venny, who goes by one name, and a business idea.

They had met through mutual friends only in June 2023, but by July, spurred by their common love for food, music and tattoos, Mr Jung had proposed.

Ms Venny was then studying the Korean language in Seoul, where she has lived for the past few years.

The couple got married in March 2024 and embarked on their passion project of Hawker Boy, a Singapore-style fusion restaurant, in the Hongdae district of Seoul two months later in May.

my favorite food chicken essay

Mr Jung, who trained in Western cooking in South Korea before working stints in Australia and France, had been planning to start either a bistro or an izakaya (a Japanese pub).

But tasting chicken rice changed his mind, and he was determined to introduce the dish to his fellow South Koreans instead, despite naysayers.

“They all said I was taking a really big risk because Singapore food is such a niche market, and it would be difficult to be economically viable. But if we do succeed, then there will be high returns too,” he told The Straits Times.

Singapore-style chicken rice can be found in at least five eateries in Seoul.

Ms Venny, who lived in Singapore briefly as a child and now visits her Singapore-based family every year, taste-tests Mr Jung’s cooking to ensure its authenticity.

my favorite food chicken essay

Their chicken gravy underwent six iterations before they were both satisfied with the results.

But replicating the authentic taste of Singapore’s chicken rice is not the biggest challenge. Convincing South Koreans that the chicken is to be eaten cold is.

Ms Venny, 34, said: “Koreans are not used to eating cold chicken, so they asked us whether the meat should be heated up.”

Hawker Boy also serves satay, a fusion-style bak kut teh, har cheong gai and bak chor mee – the chef’s favourites from Singapore’s diverse food scene.

The restaurant’s interior is decorated to bring a slice of Singapore’s Unesco-recognised hawker culture to Seoul, with photos of hawker food and hawker centres on its walls.

The barely three-month-old eatery has yet to break even, and it now sees predominantly South-east Asian customers, with South Koreans making up less than 10 per cent of the clientele.

my favorite food chicken essay

While disheartened that there are not as many ethnic Korean customers as he expected, Mr Jung takes comfort in customers’ encouraging feedback.

He recounts how one person who placed the same delivery order four weekends in a row later left a note in the ordering system saying that he used to order Korean fried chicken every Saturday for dinner but now preferred Hawker Boy’s chicken platter.

Ms Venny remains upbeat, saying it is a learning experience.

The couple plans to run this business for no more than two years before moving on to try something new.

“South Korea is a very competitive society so a change of environment is enticing. Perhaps Singapore next?” said Mr Jung.

This was met with a quick retort from Ms Venny: “But Singapore is so expensive!”

Ms Nguyen Thi Thuc may not be Singaporean, but she loves the Singapore National Day season.

“I particularly enjoy the National Day Rally, which is delivered by the prime minister of Singapore,” said Ms Nguyen, 48, who was Vietnamese newspaper Thanh Nien’s Singapore bureau chief from 2007 to 2017.

While she now lives in Vevey, Switzerland, with her Italian-Swiss husband and their nine-year-old Singapore-born daughter, and considers Vietnam and Switzerland her first and second homes, respectively, Singapore holds a special place in her heart.

So it was that on Aug 9, 2023, she wished Singapore a happy birthday in a Facebook post, accompanied by a photo of herself, dressed in red and white and holding a Singapore flag, with two friends at the 2008 National Day Parade – the first parade she ever attended.

Indeed, Ms Nguyen, who is also known by her pen name Thuc Minh, often reminisces about her 10-year stint in Singapore on her social media accounts, she told The Straits Times over a video call.

In a recent LinkedIn post, she shared a photo of her 10 press accreditation cards to the Shangri-La Dialogue, accumulated over the 10 years she reported on the annual defence forum held at the namesake hotel in Singapore, as the 2024 edition was taking place.

But what left a deep impression on her was the death of the founding prime minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, in March 2015.

“It was one of the most memorable moments in my 10-year journalism career in Singapore,” said Ms Nguyen, adding that she spent countless hours writing a series of articles about Mr Lee’s legacy and his connection with her home country.

“I wasn’t just a tourist who came for a short time and left; Singapore was my home,” she said.

These days, Ms Nguyen often taps her Singapore experience in her current role as the president of the Swiss-Vietnamese Business Gateway non-profit association, which she founded in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Switzerland, like Singapore, is politically neutral and both are gateways to regional markets, she said. More importantly, both are small and powerful financial centres surrounded by bigger and sometimes not-so-friendly neighbours, so navigating the environment may require an experienced hand, she added.

For Swiss businesses seeking opportunities in Asia, Ms Nguyen offers a South-east Asian perspective and vice versa for Vietnamese businesses looking to break into the European or global markets.

“Companies can have their sales or research and development hub in Singapore, and their production in Vietnam or Indonesia,” she said, adding that she regularly taps contacts she made in Singapore and the region to ensure she keeps up to date with the latest happenings.

She lauded the Singapore Government for its good governance of issues involving race and religion, noting that these are often the source of conflict in some countries. “Having different races and people from all walks of life in the same HDB block is one of the things I really like about racial harmony in Singapore,” she said of the country’s ethnic diversity.

For all the fond memories she holds of Singapore, she is aware that it is not a bed of roses.

The resistance towards foreigners, she said, is one longstanding issue that Singapore has yet to resolve adequately.

Once, a news report she wrote about Vietnamese students receiving scholarships from the Singapore Government was picked up by Singapore netizens who made many negative comments about how state funds were going to foreigners and that the Government did not care about its citizens.

She said such thinking was “a pity”, adding that “ordinary people in Singapore don’t understand that it’s a strategy to attract talent and build soft power”.

As she studied for her master’s degree in Belgium, reported in Singapore and now lives in Switzerland, Ms Nguyen muses that she has an affinity for small states.

“But it is not I that chose the countries, it’s the countries that chose me and gave me the opportunities,” she said.

For Singapore to continue being prosperous. Taiwanese are always impressed with how the tiny island became such an economic powerhouse.

Film buff and No.1 fan of Singapore movie Money No Enough 2

Taiwanese cinema owner loves Jack Neo film so much he screens it daily for 13 years

by Yip Wai Yee , Taiwan Correspondent

TAICHUNG – The longest-running film in Taiwan’s cinematic history is Singaporean.

Specifically, it is Jack Neo’s family drama Money No Enough 2 (2008), which was screened daily at a cinema in Taichung city in central Taiwan for 13 consecutive years, from 2009 to 2022.

That record would have most likely stretched till today, said Taiwanese cinema owner Huang Ping-hsi, had the Covid-19 pandemic not forced him to shutter his business.

“I always said that as long as there was a single person who wanted to watch the movie, I would have kept showing it,” said the 72-year-old, who described himself as the film’s “No. 1 fan”.

Mr Huang owns the second-run cineplex Wonderful Cinemas, which closed its doors after 41 years of operations in May 2022, when pandemic restrictions kept moviegoers at home.

Until then, the theatre had regularly made local headlines for Mr Huang’s persistence in screening a single Singapore movie among others.

The film stars Neo, Mark Lee and Henry Thia as three brothers facing various financial troubles while their elderly mother, played by late Malaysian actress Lai Meng, begins showing signs of dementia.

Mother, I’ve eaten, I’ve eaten, I’ve eaten!

Mr Huang never planned to screen the movie for as long as he did.

“It was meant to play for only two weeks, but I loved it so much, I decided to add another week, and then another week, and another,” he said.

This was despite the film not making him money.

“Taiwanese filmgoers are more interested in either home-grown films or Hollywood blockbusters. The average Taiwanese knows little about South-east Asian films,” he explained.

But a simple love for the film kept him going.

“This is a story about filial piety and family values, and it touched me greatly. It may be a Singaporean film but the story is universal,” he said, adding that he wept the first time he watched it.

“Taiwan is a fast-ageing society, and the movie had me thinking about senior care plans for my own family,” said Mr Huang, who is married with three daughters.

While he has not lived in Singapore, he has visited the city three times, once in his early 20s and twice more in the early 2000s.

On most days, only one or two patrons would show up at his cinema to watch the film. Typically, they would be retirees looking for a space to relax for a few hours for NT$80 (S$3.30), a fraction of the average movie ticket price of at least NT$250.

On other days, schools and companies would book the hall to hold group screenings for Money No Enough 2, which helped to keep Mr Huang going financially. He declined to share his takings for the film.

One die-hard fan watched the film 40 times.

“The movie also moved him greatly – I remember he would even gather his friends to have screening parties,” Mr Huang said.

Mr Neo, the film-maker, has visited the cinema three times to thank Mr Huang, calling his promotional efforts a “miracle”. Neo has said in previous interviews that he chose to film his first overseas movie Killer Not Stupid (2018) in Taichung because of what Mr Huang had done for his work.

The other Singapore film that has impressed Mr Huang, a movie buff, is Royston Tan’s musical drama 12 Lotus (2008).

It depicts Singapore’s culture of getai, or the live stage performances held during the Hungry Ghost Festival in the belief that they will appease the spirits wandering the earth during the period.

“It’s so colourful, and I am always intrigued by how Singaporeans can speak so many different languages and dialects. That’s fascinating,” he said.

“It’s impressive that people of different ethnicities and backgrounds can all live together and understand one another. It says a lot about Singapore’s good governance and safe living environment,” he said of the country’s diverse cultures.

Essay on My Favourite Food Biryani

Students are often asked to write an essay on My Favourite Food Biryani in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on My Favourite Food Biryani

Introduction.

Biryani, a delightful blend of rice and meat, is my favourite food. Originating from South Asia, it has won the hearts of people worldwide.

Why Biryani?

The experience.

Every bite brings a burst of flavours, making the dining experience unforgettable. The sight of Biryani itself is a treat to the eyes.

In conclusion, Biryani is not just a dish, it’s a celebration of taste, making it my favourite food.

250 Words Essay on My Favourite Food Biryani

Biryani, a symbol of culinary extravaganza, is my favourite food. This delectable dish, originating from the Indian subcontinent, is a perfect blend of rice, meat and a myriad of spices, often garnished with boiled eggs and crispy fried onions. The rich aroma, the vibrant colours, and the diverse textures make Biryani an irresistible delight.

The Aesthetic Appeal of Biryani

Biryani is not just a food; it’s an experience. The sight of the golden-hued basmati rice, speckled with vibrant chunks of meat and the aroma of the exotic spices, is a feast for the senses. The garnishing with caramelised onions, boiled eggs, and mint leaves add to the visual appeal and taste.

The Art of Biryani Making

The making of Biryani is an art in itself. It involves cooking rice and meat separately, then layering them and slow-cooking in a sealed pot. This method, known as ‘Dum’, locks in the flavours, letting them infuse into the rice. The choice of spices, the type of meat, and even the kind of rice used can vary, resulting in different types of Biryani, each with its unique taste.

Biryani: A Unifier

Biryani is a unifier, transcending cultural, geographical, and social boundaries. From the royal Nawabi Biryani of Hyderabad to the spicy Chettinad Biryani of Tamil Nadu, it represents India’s diversity and unity. It is a dish that brings people together, fostering a sense of community and shared enjoyment.

500 Words Essay on My Favourite Food Biryani

The allure of biryani, the symphony of flavours.

The allure of biryani lies in its symphony of flavours. The dish is a marvellous amalgamation of long-grained Basmati rice, succulent pieces of meat, and a medley of spices. Each ingredient plays a crucial role. The rice is not just a base but a character in itself, soaking up the flavours and adding a unique texture. The meat, be it chicken, mutton, or fish, adds depth and richness. The spices, from cardamom to turmeric, each add their unique notes, culminating in a melody that dances on the palate.

The Art of Preparation

Preparing biryani is an art form. It is not a dish to be rushed but savoured, each step from marinating the meat to layering the rice is done with care and precision. The traditional method of ‘Dum’ cooking, where the biryani is slow-cooked in a sealed handi, allows the flavours to infuse thoroughly, creating a rich and aromatic dish. The anticipation that builds as the biryani cooks is part of the experience, making the first bite all the more rewarding.

Biryani: A Cultural Mosaic

Conclusion: the universal appeal of biryani.

In conclusion, my love for biryani stems from its rich flavours, meticulous preparation, and cultural significance. It is a dish that brings people together, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries. The universal appeal of biryani lies in its ability to provide comfort while simultaneously offering an adventure for the taste buds. It is a dish that embodies the essence of gastronomy – a sensory experience that nourishes not just the body, but also the soul.

On still having an eating disorder in my 30s.

  • Share Story

If I had to put a number on it, I’d say I’m about 90% recovered. I never imagined I would get this far.

This essay discusses disordered eating. Please take care.

I t’s 7.10am and I’m ushered into a little room by an exceptionally kind nurse to run through a pre-op checklist. I’m tired and thirsty but the benefit of being booked for morning surgeries is that you’re “in and out”, as the anaesthetist put it over the phone last night. It’s a fairly simple and quick procedure: removal of a plate and screws from my left ankle. Shrapnel from a time when I was 23 and a little too tipsy in a bar. I’ve never really minded surgeries all that much. I like being looked after and I like the drugs.

The nurse runs through questions at lightning speed. Have I eaten today? No. Last time I drank anything? 6am. Taken any medications today? No. He pauses, looking down at the forms I filled out online a week ago. I know what’s coming.

“Past and present conditions…” he says.

“You’ve put endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome and an ectopic heartbeat but also several eating disorders?”

“Yeah, the bulimia probably caused the ectopic heartbeat, or that’s what I’ve been told. That’s when it started, anyway.”

“So, the eating disorders are past conditions?”

“And you’re better now?”

Better now.

I’ve always said yes because it’s the kind of redemption story people rely on, the one they desperately need to hear when this subject comes up, lest it be awkward. I don’t know what it would be to say no. I fear the oxygen would be sucked out of the room and replaced with something cloying, like pity. Worse, embarrassment. You’re how old?

The surgery goes well. Somebody delicately stitches a seam into my ankle and then carefully covers and wraps it while I am asleep. Somebody tucks me in. I wake up in the recovery room and the first thing I tell the nurse is that for the first time under anaesthesia, I dreamt. In my dream I was 19, but happy this time. She smiles at me as I let my eyes close again.

Back at home, I look down at my padded foot and think about what I’m going to eat during the week to make up for the lack of movement I’ll be doing. To gain weight is to put myself in danger. The threat of relapse is a dim tune that plays beneath everything of consequence I do, like an ex you take great pains to avoid running into.

I take two tramadol and fall asleep with my phone in my hand, googling organic vegetable boxes.

At 31, you finally tell someone.

“Yeah, that checks out. Every girl I’ve dated had an eating disorder,” he says.

“But I’m not a girl,” you say. I’m a woman. And I still have one.”

 He shrugs.

You sit with that shame for a while till it blooms so thick that it pushes him out of the room and out of your house to his electric bike. You think about how if the bike weren’t electric, he would burn more calories. How stupid he is, to buy an electric bike, when he could be working towards looking and feeling better.

You download Myfitnesspal for the 100th time, start tracking your calories again. You buy the premium version; you don’t know why.

Sometimes I like to reach a hand back to my former self, dig my fingers into when it started to get bad. I’m not sure I have the arm span to reach all the way back to the beginning, but I can so vividly see my 16-year-old self and her obsession with healthy eating. Chewing raw green beans to the point of mush because it was better for digestion. Researching thiamine, leucine, polyphenols and anthocyanins in bed at night. It gave me a high to see the other girls at school on diets, drinking Cup A Soups for lunch, when I knew they were essentially nutritionally void and packed with sodium.

My food diary from that time was evidence of my obsession with “healthy” eating, a relic that is now safely rotting in a landfill somewhere. I filled it with facts about food and pictures I cut out of the Healthy Food Guide my mother subscribed to.

I wasn’t sick; I was healthy! My weight loss was praised! It was the early 2000s! My empty-stomach breath was from fasting and fasting is good for you! Didn’t you know?

I can see the slippery slope now. I see my younger self at the precipice, celebrating fitting into her ball gown. At the bottom of the slope, a monster sits next to me, filing her nails while she waits. Her spine shows through her shirt like the vertebrae of a snake.

She looks at me and raises her eyebrows.

“What a shame you didn’t ask for help,” she says.

You love the supermarket. You love looking at the labels of everything and you love that you know that vitamin C can be used as a preservative. You do really good this time; you don’t buy anything processed. But you could even buy cheese now, if you wanted to. You could buy crackers or cereal and it isn’t scary at all. You buy wholefoods and imagine a reality where clean eating revolutionises your life to a point of complete and utter euphoria. You know you should get chocolate or something for balance, but you don’t need it, do you? Other people don’t need it. You’re “other people”, now. You’re recovered. You’re fine.

You get home and examine your hoard and then realise you have to wash the herbs because the herbs have pesticides on them.

For fucks sake, does there need to be something wrong with everything?

my favorite food chicken essay

D uring my late teens, every minute of every day was spent, in some way, thinking about either food or my body. The emphasis on health had soured at some point and turned to restriction. I began each day scrutinising my appearance in the mirror before weighing myself, and that blinking number would dictate the kind of day I had. I ate very little and exercised a lot. I had a calculator in lieu of a personality. My body was a number; every mouthful of food was a number. I knew all of them at all times. I planned meals down to a fine point. I weighed every ingredient. I grew mean as I rotted from the inside out.

I had a limitless and relentless hatred of myself. My sickness was a parasite with a voice that would haunt me at any given time of the day – I was a bad person, I didn’t deserve to eat, all I had to offer were my looks and they were not very good. To become smaller was optimal. To take up less space was the goal. I was so scared of food that at times I was convinced that to even touch it, I would somehow absorb some of it. I worried about the calorific content of toothpaste. I googled fluoride and if it had any effect on hunger cues. I was frightened of tap water.

People often think eating disorders are rooted in vanity and I understand why. To lose weight is to look “better” in the eyes of society, most of the time. But most sufferers of eating disorders with physical symptoms of a lower body mass know they don’t look good . It stretches far beyond wanting to be beautiful or to have a “beach body”. I must have taken thousands of photos of my face and body during this time, but not because I thought I looked good. Each photo was a “before” photo, taken before the next “before” photo, and the next.

The day I reached my lowest weight, I expected to feel some kind of hallowed elation. I expected my aura to change and to finally feel the elusive happiness I had been chasing. I felt nothing except anxiety that the scale was somehow wrong because I didn’t feel finished. I also felt very cold all the time. When I lay down in bed at night, my heart rate would lie somewhere in the early 40s. I hadn’t seen my family or friends in weeks. Nobody knew what was going on save for one friend who I made promise not to tell anyone. I looked down at my bluish nails. This was not a maintainable state of being. I met my own eyes in the bathroom mirror. This is not a life, I thought.

You go to a three-day music festival and experience a freedom so intense and joyous that you think, “Oh my god, is this what it is? Is this what other people feel like?”

In reality, you’re doing 25,000 steps a day and deep down you know that’s a foundation you’re relying heavily upon. You could eat anything you want and not risk gaining any weight, but you don’t, so you lose it.

You’re too excited to get to the next act, to see your friends, meet new people. You eat half a chicken wrap and throw the other half away to make it in time to see an act you’ve been waiting all weekend to see. You make eye contact with a beautiful girl in a tent during one of the music acts where everyone’s sweating and some people have their shirts off. You make eye contact again. You smile, she smiles back. You’re too busy to think of eating. How wonderful to not even think of food.

I’m 20 and in a dentist’s chair, leant back with my mouth wide open while an older male dentist probes at my gums. The dental assistant hovers nearby, smart in her light-blue uniform. Her clean hair is pulled back and she’s all clear skin and shining eyes, smiling down at me. I am very aware of the little sores I have next to my mouth. I thought they were pimples but a google search showed me pages and pages about physical signs of stress and malnutrition. Being run down, run through. The dentist pulls away slightly and asks if I have acid reflux. I know what acid reflux is because it’s a symptom of oesophageal cancer, which my great aunt died of.

I tell the dentist I don’t have acid reflux.

“The backs of your teeth are showing damage, commonly seen from acid erosion.” His eyes, magnified by his thick glasses, search mine. I stare back, unblinking, challenging.

If you ask me about it, I will lie.

He doesn’t ask me about it.

Dentists know if you’re making yourself sick, because of the enamel erosion from stomach acid, but also because of the bruising at the back of your tongue and throat. Other sick people know, too. It’s a sort of loose-skin, puffy-faced appearance. Red knuckles on a dominant hand, stained teeth, distended stomachs, under-eye bags. Even if we recognised each other in public, we never acknowledged one another.

After the dentist appointment, I make my way home to my disgusting apartment to chain smoke cigarettes and log into Tumblr, where a blog of mine has just hit 7,000 followers. You see, in lieu of acknowledging each other in public, we met each other at night on pro-anorexia and pro-bulimia blogs and traded ways to get thinner and sicker. We shared images of our wrists and waists and ribs and through this black market for mental illness, we became friends.

Every once in a while, one of us would disappear and it was assumed that they’d been found out and forced into recovery. 99% of the time, they would come back and confirm our suspicions, but some of them gave up on their own accord and some of them, I can only assume, died. Death was a constant threat and it didn’t matter to any of us; our illnesses were bigger than death. They were more important to maintain than whatever mortal coil we crouched precariously upon; sometimes crawled across; made our way over the freezing bathroom tiles to the toilet bowl, haul everything up again.

We held shaking hands in the dark and our illnesses crossed oceans and time zones to encourage and commiserate. I was five years deep into my illness before I found the blogs. I had moved from restriction to bingeing and purging back to restriction so many times I had lost count. But I was also a “healthy” weight. To tell someone at this time would have invited criticism and disbelief.

My heart started throwing an extra beat in every now and then. In the pause that reigned in my chest afterwards, I could hear my own voice repeating, “please, somebody help me.”

You often think about running into the hills and screaming so long and so loud that it acts as a signal to every other person so swamped, so mired by thoughts about food, that they all come running, crawling, howling so that you’d have someone to talk to that actually understood. Somebody that knew there wasn’t a right thing to say. Somebody who knew when to not to say anything at all.

M y therapist argues that it’s important to find the root of something in order to extract it and examine it. I argue that even if I were to find it, it would be impossible to remove it completely. It is not such an easy thing to pull out, even after having pulled any number of things out of my mouth with my own fingers. It wouldn’t be easy even with the house to myself and the bathroom fan going. Not that I do that anymore. I mean, I do it once every 18 months and remember how hideous it is and then I swear never to do it again. Then I do it again the next year. But I don’t really do it anymore.

But OK fine, the root is probably that I was an overweight kid and then “heavy” teenager. I began talking about my weight at seven years old. My family made me feel bad about it. Later, my friends’ boyfriends and their friends made me feel bad about it. I wanted to wear a bikini and I didn’t want it to be embarrassing for someone to have a crush on me. I felt tainted, wicked and unseemly. I felt deeply and unforgivably ugly.

In truth, I believe it was a virus I was either born with or predisposed to, and it’s one that has reactivated at different points in my life, like shingles or herpes. I have tried so incredibly hard to rip it out. I have used both hands, I have turned myself inside out in order to locate it so that I might throw it into the fire and finally hear it die.

At this point I don’t think I will ever be rid of it completely, but as much as I convince myself at times that I have changed so little, at times when my first response to anything going wrong is a little voice in my ear telling me to just stop eating ; I am much changed. I have grown in ways my younger self would hardly believe. I have been in active recovery for just over 10 years now and that seems like a long time to anyone currently in the grips of an eating disorder, but the time will pass anyway. I am happy. I live a life very much worth living.

I eat at least three meals a day, complete meals with carbs, fats and protein. I keep chocolate in the house and it lasts weeks at a time, sometimes. Other times it lasts two days. It has no moral value. My favourite parts of the week are when I meet one of my friends for a huge oat latte in lieu of a black coffee and we split a pastry. I sneak a bite of their sandwich.

The numbers come flooding back and I begin to panic and plan tomorrow where I will go to the gym and then the numbers

float away as we bend from the waist to howl with laughter on the street. I still plan my meals and I often eat the same thing for dinner for weeks on end, sometimes months, but I recently stopped measuring out olive oil. I’ll drink a cocktail over a vodka soda if I can afford it financially and then sometimes after big nights, I’ll order Uber Eats and eat too much too fast and

pour nail polish remover over the last of the meal so I won’t eat anymore and begin to spiral and think about how bad it would be to bring it back up, just this once, just this one more time but then I

drink a big glass of water and sit outside. I make my bed, brush my teeth, clean up.

I am 33 and I still have an eating disorder. I may always have one. I tend to just say I have “weird food things” when discussing it with other people. My flatmates know about it, they don’t question why I have to have my fruit separated from theirs in the fruit bowl or why some weeks I’m measuring out egg whites and some weeks I’m aggressively eating processed food as a form of rebellion. If I had to put a number on it, I’d say I’m about 90% recovered. I never imagined I would get this far. I thought it would either kill me or I would die with it.

I recently started buying organic food which my therapist says is almost definitely a form of control or restriction, but I know where that begins and where it ends. I don’t hate my body. Some days I don’t like it very much, but it survived such an intense amount of pain and self-hatred and it still heals wounds for me. It creates dreams where I can reinvent my past into a much more forgiving one. It allows me to reach out a hand to you, now, in the hopes that you might grasp it if you need to. A healthy hand, a warm hand, a hand with a strong pulse and pink nailbeds. The other hand I reach out to my younger self, she’s shocked that I’m telling everyone.

I’m shocked too.
