500+ Bookstagram Hashtags
- Post published: June 24, 2021
- Post last modified: October 16, 2021
Being a spreadsheet freak, I am, of course, one of those people who uses them to track my book hashtags. I’ve had this list for a while now and figured other bookish instagrammers could benefit as well! This is pretty much every hashtag I could think of (over 500 of them), sized from only a few hundred posts to millions. Consider this page a work-in-progress, as I’ll be adding new hashtags as I find them and updating the size on the current ones.
See my bookstagram page here.
If you’re wondering about specific tips for using and making the most of your bookstagram hashtags, check out my post on how to grow your bookstagram — there’s a pretty extensive section on the methods I use if you scroll to the bottom.
I’ve split the list into two parts: millions and thousands. They are then ordered smallest to largest, so it should be easier to find the broad/niche hashtags you need.
Lastly, if you notice any hashtags I’m missing and you think I should have, feel free to comment and I will add them!

Here are the recommended hashtag groups for you:
- Books (including book shelf, book stack, book club and audio book hashtags)
- Book Blogger and Content Creator
- 2021 Book Reads
- Quarantine Reads
Quotes hashtags
- Stationery and Studygram (if you share this content too)
- Community hashtags (like “moms”)
- Other hashtags (like genre, author, book title)
You can mix hashtags from different groups to create your own unique set of hashtags.
Keep scrolling to see.
All the hashtags are in Preview App .
And they work :
The hashtags are organized into hashtag groups. Ready to be copy and pasted to your post.
Book Instagram hashtags
The core hashtag groups in Preview that are recommend are:
- Book Shelf (for your #shelfies)
- Book Genres (like Romance, Fantasy, Fiction, Children Books)
These hashtag groups have the core Instagram hashtags that book lovers and bookstagrammers use.
These groups have a mix of community bookstagram hashtags and hashtags to get you featured on other people’s pages.
You might have noticed some Instagram accounts specialize in reposting other people’s book content. They have created their own hashtags that people can use to be featured.
You will find these hashtags in Preview.
Book Blogger Instagram hashtags
Are you a book blogger or book reviewer?
Use the “ Book Blogger ” and “ Content Creator ” hashtag groups.
Flatlay hashtags
Do you take beautiful flatlay photos with your books?
Use the “ Flatlay ” hashtag group.
This hashtag group also has hashtags to help you get featured on accounts that repost flatlay content.
2021 Book hashtags
Use the “ 2021 Books ” hashtag group, so that people looking for the best books of 2021 can find your post.
Note: Each year there will be new hashtags. So if you are reading this in 2022 (or any other year), you will still find relevant hashtags in this group.
Quarantine Reads hashtags
People have also created new hashtags because of lockdowns. These hashtags gather a community of readers who share their favorite reads during quarantine.
Check the “ Quarantine Reads ” hashtags.
Do you share book quotes?
I recommend these hashtag groups:
- Motivational Quotes (if it is a motivational section of the book)
Poem hashtags
Do you share poems? Use the “ Poem ” hashtags.
Writer hashtags
Bookstagrammers also use “ Writer ” hashtags. Whether they are writers themselves, or if they are sharing books from their favorite writers.
Use the “ Writer ” hashtag group to diversify your hashtag strategy .
Stationery and Studygram hashtags
Use the “ Stationery ” and “ Studygram ” hashtag groups if you are sharing posts of your books alongside stationery, or if you are sharing “studygram” content as well.
Self-care hashtags
Books are part of self-care too. They allow us to expand our horizons, enter a new world, and relax.
Use the “ Self-Care ” related hashtags in Preview to connect with this community on Instagram.
Here are hashtag groups in Preview I recommend:
- Self-Growth (especially if the book is teaching you something)
- Self-Development (same as above, and for self-development books too)
Home hashtags
Do you also share photos or videos of your books in your home? With your home decor?
Type “ Home ” in Preview to use all the beautiful hashtags that home-lovers use.
Home lovers might be your ideal followers, interested in books too.
Community hashtags for book lovers
Hashtags = communities.
For example, if you are a mom, you can use mom-related hashtags to connect with fellow moms.
Type “ Mom ” in the search bar of the Hashtag Finder to see them:
Other Instagram hashtags for bookstagram
Use Instagram hashtags for bookstagram that are specific. This way, people who are looking for reviews or other people reading this book, can find you.
Write the hashtag of:
- The book title (example: #thepoweroflettinggo)
- The author (example: #johnpurkiss
- The publisher
- What is in the photo (type a keyword in the search bar of the Hashtag Generator in Preview to find more hashtags, like: “Flowers”, “Coffee”, “Home”, “Beach”)
- The name of your city or country (example: #london, if you want to connect with other local Instagrammers. Preview also has community location hashtags.)
Where are the Instagram hashtags for books in Preview?
You can use Preview on the phone app and on the computer .
The steps are the same on both.
Open your caption in Preview:
Press on “ Find Hashtags “:
Type a keyword in the search bar. For example: “ Book “.
Press on “ Add All ” to add all the hashtags in your caption (or first comment).
Alternatively, press on only the hashtag you want to use , to only add that one to your list. This allows you to mix and match hashtags from different hashtag groups.

Done-For-You Bookstagram Hashtag Groups
While the above hashtags are fairly easy to pick and choose between, sometimes you just want something super easy . Which is why I’ve mixed and matched the general book hashtags into groups for you.
These groups of Bookstagram hashtags are copy and paste easy! Just choose a group, highlight, and copy them and you’ll be good to go! Each group contains 20 hashtags, which leaves you plenty of room to add 5-10 hashtags from specific categories above (plus hashtagging the name of the book)…or just use the 20 hashtags exactly as they are!

Best Bookstagram Hashtags: What They Are And How To Use Them
While you’ve been searching for the best bookstagram hashtags, the hashtag #bookstagram itself has already been used in above 62,000,000 posts.
Bookstagram was first recognized as a small niche nook of Instagram in 2014 .
Since then, book lovers, bloggers, and marketers on Instagram have been referred to as bookstagrammers, while bookstagram has turned into a gigantic universe.
Amidst COVID-19, in particular, Instagram saw a 31% boost in book-related content.
If you want to develop a great profile in this niche, see the rapid growth of your account, and survive the competition, let some effective bookstagram hashtags come into play.
But you need to know the game rules first because one innocent hashtag can ruin your efforts and undermine your account reputation altogether.
It’s revealed in a few paragraphs.
Keep reading to learn why proper tagging matters, what bookstagram hashtags are the most prevailing in 2022, which ones to avoid, and how to make a “wow” bookstagram account.
Hashtags for Bookstagram: Why Bother
Whether reading is a hobby, habit, or addiction for you and your bookstagram is a warm and cozy place where you share your passion with the world, or whether you’re a book blogger-solopreneur who uses Instagram for marketing purposes, you must be posting tons of bookshelf photos, to-be-read piles, single copies, or anything else related to books.
Why do you need to hashtag your images and videos the right way? Properly chosen hashtags can help you do the following:
- Break new ground and generate creative ideas for your content;
- Keep pace with the bookish trends;
- Engage with your target audience;
- Feel the sense of belongingness reaching like-minded people;
- Gain better post visibility and expand your fan base (list of followers).
For example, Jasiek Pokrop, a content marketer from NapoleonCat, conducted an experiment and discovered that 76,193 visitors were driven purely by hashtags themselves.
In fact, one Instagram hashtag can uplift post interactions by 29% , while another can “bury” your post for good.
Why is that so?
The matter is that some hashtags are often banned by Instagram.
If you use them, your post may not be visible at all.
One of the best bookstagram hashtags, 2022, got into the prohibited list as well.
Read on to discover the most popular bookstagram hashtags today and find out which one of them isn’t allowed and why.

How To Stand Out With Bookstagram Hashtags and Grow Your Account Faster
Follow some actionable pieces of advice listed below, get noticed, and build a solid base of followers on Instagram.
#1 Stay away from banned hashtags
Some hashtags accompany floods of spam.
That’s why Instagram bans them to fight spammy behavior from suspicious accounts.
When you use one of the prohibited Instagram hashtags, your post gets “shadowbanned.”
It means that it gets “buried” and is no longer discoverable.
It’s invisible to Instagram users who don’t follow you.
Shadowbanning limits the growth of your follower base and your organic reach.
Surprisingly, #books is one of the banned hashtags. Also, among them are the following:
- #mustfollow
- #ilovemyinstagram
- #rate, etc.
#2 Mix hashtags up
Don’t copy-paste the same bookstagram hashtags you used for your previous videos or photos.
Instead, mix them up:
The most popular + less popular + the least popular
If a hashtag is universal and competitive, there are too many accounts using it, and, in this case, your post is moved down faster.
And vice versa: it will stay visible longer if it’s a less mainstream hashtag.
#3 Take advantage of Instagram’s “Related” feature
Pick up fresh hashtags from the “Related” list.
If you open any hashtag page, you’ll see a number of related hashtags (above the Top and Recent tabs).
Here you’ll find some associated examples with the one you searched for.
#4 Add niche-specific hashtags
When you specify your hashtag and narrow down your content to one niche, you can increase your bookstagram post engagement.
It’s because it will stay on the top longer and get discovered by people who are interested in a particular topic.
Have a look at some niche categories you may choose from:
- Genre-distinctive:#memoir, #romance, #fiction, #crime, #scifi, #mystery, #detective, #fantasy, #horror, etc.
- Age-related:#youngadultbooks, #booksforkids, #kidlit, #kidsbooks, etc.
- Books& ___ category:#booksanddogs, #booksandwine, #booksandcoffee, etc.
- Everything else:#librarybook, #borrowedbooks, #shelfie, #bookshelfporn, #instabookclub, etc.
For example, you might want to share your experience with other book recyclers on how you repurpose old hardcover books .
So, you should definitely go with:
#hardcovers, #hardcoverbook, #recycledbooks, #repurposedbooks, #oldbooks, #diy, #secondhandbooks, #recycledart, #bookpages, and the like.
#5 Try personalization
To gather your audience around you and make a fandom, personalize your bookstagram as much as possible and create a branded or DIY hashtag.
E.g., #wordchild is a hashtag coined by a famous bookstagrammer to match the name of the blog word-child.com.
Writers also use personalized hashtags to make it easier for their fans to interact with them.
Lucey Foley , an author of historical fiction and mystery novels, goes with #lucyfoleyauthor.
Jerry Han, a YA fiction writer, has got over 165,000 posts tagged with #jerryhan.
#6 Use Instagram’s potential to the fullest
How many hashtags to use.
The average Instagram post contains 10–11 hashtags , while 11+ hashtags in a single post lead to a 79% growth in interactions.
How many hashtags do you typically add to your bookstagram video or image?
As you may be well aware, Instagram has set a 30-hashtag limit.
Why not use all 30?
The more hashtags you insert, the more views you may get.
Where to place them?
As for the suitable place for hashtags, they are effective in both the caption and the comment box.
However, your post will look cleaner and not so “overloaded” if you leave them in the comments section.
#7 Save time and generate hashtags automatically
For instance, you’ve decided to catch the wave of the book’s popularity.
Let’s take the most recent one that rocked the cyberpunk reading world and became in high demand due to its screen adaptation: The Peripheral by William Gibson.
You may save much time, usually spent on typing or copy-pasting, and get your bookstagram hashtags generated automatically with HashtagsGenerator .
Enter “theperipheral” without spaces in the search bar and press “Search”.
Ta-da! You’ve got a 30-item pile ready for your post.
One key thing left – is to choose the right time for publishing it. And exclude #books from the list!
Bonus Hack: Choose the Proper Timing for Your Bookstagram Posts
If you normally share your bookstagram content at night, it’s unlikely to get you the biggest audience.
Check the best posting time for Instagram on each day of the week: Monday and Thursday: 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm Tuesday: 8–10 am Wednesday: 9–11 am (11 am is the universal best time) Friday: 2–4 pm Saturday: 8–10 am Sunday: 6–8 pm
Considering that people spend an average of 28 minutes per day on Instagram , you’d better pay greater attention to when exactly you publish your book pictures and videos.
This way, you won’t miss the appropriate moment for higher engagement with Instagram users.
Hashtags for Your Wow Bookstagram: Summing Up
Hashtags are undoubtedly the game-changers for sharing your favorite books, book reviews, bookshelves, book lists, and the like on Instagram.
Selecting hashtags for bookstagram, use our sure-fire tips and tricks to win your audience over and grow your book blog:
- Mix hashtags up;
- Scroll through the “Related” list;
- Apply niche-specific hashtags;
- Try branding and personalization;
- Go with all 30;
- Use a hashtag generator;
- Publish content during the high hours;
And (oops, nearly forgot this!) don’t use #books
And other banned hashtags, of course.
Happy bookstagramming!

The Ultimate Guide to Social Media Hashtags for Book Authors
Inspired by a similar post, I have compiled a list of 439 hashtags for book authors and ebook writers to use on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. The focus is on #books and #writers.
And, yes, I’ve cheated in creating this list of hashtags because I’m actually featuring hashtags that book authors are currently using (rather than hypothetical hashtags they can or should use).
Hashtags (demarcated by a number sign or pound sign in front of a word, for example, #hashtag) are an easy way for people interested in a specific keyword topic to mark their tweets, pins, and posts so others can join in the conversation.
Most of the social networks use them, especially now that Facebook has started using hashtags. Here are a few examples of how the social networks use hashtags:
On Facebook, every #hashtag in use has its own URL, for example: https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/facebooktips (#facebooktips).
Twitter allows you to #Discover hashtags via searches, for example: https://twitter.com/search?q=%23facebook&src=hash (#facebook)
Pinterest supports hashtags but when you search on a hashtag such as #mywords, Pinterest features all pins with the characters mywords in the description.
Please note: Select a few hashtags that are right for you and your book. Don’t use all of the hashtags listed below. Use five to ten that have the most meaning for you and your potential audience.

And, of course, use hashtags to highlight your keyword topics, such as #crafts, #food, #travel, #exotictravel, #parenting, #health, etc.
At some point in using hashtags, you might want to create your own hashtag so you and others can follow a specific topic. Facebook expert Mari Smith, for instance, has created a hashtag that she uses in every one of her Facebook posts: #facebookmari.
I could see book authors creating a hashtag out of their book title, something like #1001Ways. Or a hashtag around your website, something like #bookmarketingbestsellers or #infographicaday. Or a new hashtag around your topic, such as #bookmarketingtip , which I will be using more and more.
Start by getting use to adding hashtags in your social media pins, posts, shares, etc. Then start engaging in discussions with others using the same hashtag (or simply repin, share, or plusone posts with the same hashtag). Finally, create your own hashtag — but you must use it consistently to make the hashtag your own.
Note: This list of hashtags has been updated from the original 41 to over 270 hashtags. If you have more book or ebook #hashtags that you use, comment below. I’ll add them to the list. Thanks!
Learn to Say Thanks
Here’s one hashtag theme that more authors should use: #thanks or #thankyou or #thankful.Or #ThankfulThursdays. Or #ThankYouNoteFriday.
Even Justin Bieber says thanks:
Some Key Ways to Use Hashtags
Some key ways you can use hashtags to discover new things, market your books and services, or simply find interesting people:
More Retweets and Shares — Tweets with hashtags are 55% more likely to be retweeted. Retweets get you more notice from people who do not follow you but follow the retweeter.
Double the Engagement — Tweets with hashtags get double the engagement of tweets without hashtags. That means more favorites, more retweets, more replies, etc. Hashtags also encourage more engagements in the other social networks as well: more likes, more shares, more comments, more repins.
Follow Topics — In most social networks, hashtags are clickable. That means people can follow topics with hashtags and/or scan topics at the peak of their interest in a subject.
Follow Chats — Hashtags allow people to follow chats on a specific topic, especially useful with Twitter chats.
Make It an Event — Highlight all the happenings at an event via a unique event hashtag so everyone can share the content, happenings, and news related to that event. And even schedule meetups at the event.
Drive People to New Content — You can use hashtags to drive people to new topics where you create a unique hashtag. People that like that topic can follow your new content over multiple social networks. I did that with #bookmarketingtips.
Monitor Hashtags — You can monitor hashtags that your potential customers might use, so when they need help, you can respond immediately with help.
Monitor Your Competitors — Follow hashtags related to your competitors’ names, brands, etc. Among other things, you can discover people who are unhappy with your competitors’ products and services. Better yet, you can find out right away when your competitors are announcing new products, new events, new services, new developments.
Monitor Yourself — Be sure to follow any hashtags related to your company name, book title, brand, author name, etc. Discover what others are saying about you. You might also want to follow the sucky hashtags like #yournamesucks or #yourcompanysucks or similar constructions.

I just wanted to note that anything with a dash (-) in it won’t pick up the second half. Hashtags can only include letters. So it would need to be sp and selfpublish in order for them to work. Otherwise, great list – and thanks for linking to us!

One hashtag I love is #pubtips. Oftentimes editors, publicists, agents and the like post tidbits under that. I also do sometimes like the other day when I said “You don’t have to take part in every promo opportunity you come across.”
Also, specific agents/editors have hashtags. Not sure she’s still doing it but Sara Megibow (The Nelson Agency) had #5queriesin5tweets. There are others I can’t recall, but it’s worth looking at the timeline of an editor or agent to see if they have their own hashtag.
Also on the subject of editors and agents, both do these GREAT chats called #askeditor and #askagent. Most of them are impromptu, but word spreads fast when one starts. You can directly ask an editor or an agent what they’re looking for, what they’re sick of, what length book is selling, and tons of other questions. It was invaluable to me before I published, not only for the advice, but to make my name familiar to the agents and editors who hosted them.
Another one, #querytips. Pretty obvious what this is about, but there’s been some advice there.
Lastly, myself and two other authors are self-pubbing a book in a few weeks. We’re thinking of a hashtag for it. The title is Going All In, and it’s a hockey romance anthology. We’ve gotten some great suggestions from readers but haven’t picked one yet. Would love to hear any ideas from folks here.

Love your ideas. Will add them to my list. Thanks, Cassandra.
As for your hashtag, you could go simple: #goingallin Or perhaps more descriptive: #hockeyromance
Thanks. Added that one as well. Much appreciated.
There’s a hashtag #IsItOctboerYet for hockey fans in general. I think we’re going to pair it with #GoingALLIn and then supplement with #HockeyRomance when we have enough room. Can’t take up too many characters with hashtags. ;-)
- August 16, 2013
That’s great that you know one of the key hockey hashtags for fans. That means you’ve done your research.

Thanks, John. I wasn’t aware that Facebook supports hashtags.

I have two hashtags to add:
1. #micropoetry is one I use for (as the name implies) micropoetry
2. #MSWL stands for “manuscript wishlist.” It’s a tag agents and publishers use to say, “I’m looking for a book such as…” Be advised: a lot of would-be authors abuse this tag by including it with a post such as “Does anyone want to see my…”

Some bookstagrammers do not use any bookstagram hashtags as it does not look “aesthetic” when they’re mentioned in their posts.
If you are finding it difficult to search for the best bookstagram hashtags to use in your posts, this guide will help you find them along with the best tips and tricks.

Why Do You Need To Use Bookstagram Hashtags?
Bookstagram hashtags have always been important and have become even more relevant in 2022.
1. To Grow Your Account
If you’re wondering – how can I increase my bookstagram followers?
Then know that bookstagram hashtags are one of the best strategies to grow your account.
Since I am not someone who has a tiktok or a booktube to reach out to more readers, I can vouch for this.
Bookstagram hashtags is my number 1 way of growing a bookstagram account. This is because hashtags allow like-minded people to find you.
My suggestion would be to put 30 hashtags in either the caption or comment section.
There’s no difference whether you put it in the caption or comment section when it comes to engagement. Read more about this in the following section!
2. To Gain Post Ideas
Bookstagram hashtags aren’t just for account visibility and an increase in followers, you can also use it to explore post ideas.
For example, I follow the #smallbookstagrammer hashtag to find more bookstagrammers that are not so popular like myself but have great content.
I also follow #booksandcoffee to get some inspiration for my next bookstagram posts.
So do follow or save relevant hashtags, they might come in handy!
3. To Stay Up To Date With An Author/Fandom
I follow some hashtags of authors that I’ve read as I grew up so that I don’t miss any of their latest books. For example – #sophiekinsella and #juliaquinn.
I also follow #bridgertonnetflix to stay up to date with any Bridgerton related news because I am a huge fangirl.
Bookstagram Hashtag Tips And Tricks
These are tips I’ve gathered over my past two years being part of the bookstagram community.
1. Use 30 Hashtags.
Don’t waste the opportunity for higher reach!
How many hashtags to use on an instagram post?
There’s a limit of 30 hashtags so make sure you put in 30! A lot of bookstagrammers don’t even use hashtags, that’s closing off doors to being more visible.
Finding it difficult to come up with 30 hashtags? There’s a curated list of bookstagram hashtags in the next section.
2. Use A Mix Of Different Hashtag Sizes.
To increase your reach, use a mix of different hashtag sizes.
Large, medium and smaller hashtags will give you the opportunity to be seen among different types of bookstagrammers from all over the world.
Here are examples of a large, medium and small sized bookstagram hashtags.
3. Hashtag The Author’s Name.
A lot of bookstagrammers will tag the author of the book in their review but they forget to hashtag the author.
That’s a huge potential to be visible among readers who like the author’s books.
4. Hashtag Book Title And Publisher
I’m sure hashtagging the book title is a common practice among many bookstagrammers.
If the title of the book is too long, do consider searching for a hashtag that are shorter (eg: How The King Of Elfhame Learned To Hate Stories – #htkoelths)
However, a lot of us bookstagrammers forget to hashtag the publishing company. This is also a missed opportunity for exposure.
5. Use Localised Hashtags
Don’t forget to add hashtags from your country, state or community. That’s how you make friends, do buddy reads and more!
I’m a bookstagrammer and book blogger from Malaysia, so I would hashtag the following – #bookstagrammermalaysia #malaysiamembaca #malaysianbookstagrammer
6. Make Sure Your Hashtags Are Existing
One common mistake we bookstagrammer do without realizing is hashtagging hashtags don’t even exist.
This means no one has hashtagged their post with the hashtag before and no one is going to be searching for that hashtag.
Therefore, the hashtag is completely pointless!
For example, as a fan I might hashtag #bridgertonship because I ship certain characters with certain characters. In reality, that hashtag does not even exist so there’s no point hashtagging it.
5 Batches Of Bookstagram Hashtags To Copy And Paste
The most annoying part is typing out 30 hashtags for every single bookstagram post. I feel you, I too struggle to think of 30 bookstagram hashtags on the spot.

Creating Your Own Bookstagram Hashtag
Is creating your own bookstagram hashtag necessary?
It is not necessary in my opinion, but it is nice to have a personalised hashtag for your audience especially if you are planning to post very frequently.
When you post different types of content frequently, I would suggest for you to hashtag your reviews with a personalised hashtag so that your followers can easily access all your reviews by searching for the hashtag.
A good example would be @sarcasticbrunettes.library ‘s bookstagram posts. She has her own hashtags to keep tabs on her reviews.
I hope these bookstagram hashtags help you in not just growing your bookstagram account but also help you save time and energy thinking of hashtags for every single post. Bookmark this article so you always have hashtags ready-to-go!

200 Best Instagram Hashtags for Authors
Hey there! Even though this list is called “best Instagram hashtags for authors,” the ones that are best for you will depend on who you are and what you write. The list will probably make you think of other writing hashtags, too.
I wanted to write this post because I’m always interested in the benefits of social media for writers. Besides, I’ve been using Instagram a lot more lately. I’m doing my one-post-a-day-for-a-year challenge—it’s one of my 101 Life Goals . (If you want to check out my Instagram, click here. )
One thing I’ve realized is that I was using a lot less hashtags than most Instagram users…maybe two or three at most, when Instagram allows for thirty! Hashtags are usually how other users come across your posts, so I’ve started to use them a lot more.
I’m including a mix of big, popular hashtags and smaller niche hashtags. On the one hand, you may want to reach a lot of people with your posts…but on the other, your post may get lost when you choose a huge hashtag, and some niche hashtags may reach people who are more specifically interested in your kind of thing!
Although some of these seem simple, it can be hard to think of a bunch of hashtags in the moment. Pin or bookmark this list, and you’ll have it for future reference!

Do you use Instagram as an author? (If you do, feel free to share a link to your account below!) Do you have any other advice, or other creative writing hashtags for Instagram you’d like to recommend! Let us know in the comments!
As I say in my forthcoming my forthcoming book Blank Page to Final Draft , it’s never too soon to start establishing a social media presence as an author. And if you want a step-by-step way to plan, write, and edit a novel so it’s polished and ready to publish (whether it’s romance, or any genre), pre-order the book!
Even in the middle of a busy, crazy, life, you can do one step a year… Or if you want to do two, three, or four steps a week, you can do that, too! (If you prefer to get things for free and you don’t want to wait, you can subscribe to the free series I’m doing right now on YouTube !
Thanks for reading, and happy writing!

NetGalley’s Guide to Who to Tag in Book Reviews
NetGalley members love to share their reviews on their bookish social media platforms. There are many strategies that readers can use on those platforms to help their reviews reach the intended audience, and tagging is one of the most vital! Here we’re sharing who you should be tagging in your reviews and other helpful tagging tips.
Familiarize yourself with which social platforms allow tagging If you’re posting your review to a social media platform (X, Instagram, TikTok, etc), then you have the option to utilize tags in reviews by using the @ symbol followed by a user’s handle.
There are also places where NetGalley members leave reviews that don’t have a tagging feature—such as review websites (such as Goodreads, The StoryGraph, etc) or consumer sites (Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc).
Let’s take a closer look at who to tag and why.
Tag NetGalley Whether you’re sharing your excitement over being approved or you’re sharing your review, we want to hear about it! It’s not only fun to see what books our members are reading, but it also helps to give us a sense of the Categories, formats, and publishers you love. You can find us under the handle @NetGalley on X , Facebook , Instagram , and TikTok .
Tag the publisher Publishers enjoy seeing members’ social posts and reviews about the books they’ve provided access to. The easiest way to find a publisher’s social media handles is to go to their publisher page on NetGalley and look at the “Find Them Online” box in the left column. Like with NetGalley, you can tag the publisher both when sharing the news that you were approved and when sharing your review.
What to consider before tagging an author Whether or not you should tag an author in your review isn’t as straightforward as it may seem. Here are a few common questions we see in regards to when to tag the author.
Why do some authors prefer not to be tagged? There are a multitude of reasons why authors do not want to be tagged in reviews on social media. First, reviews are meant for readers. They are intended to help readers decide whether a book is right for them or the community they represent. Tagging an author into a post that may be critical of their work, invites them into a conversation that should be focused on readers and puts the author in an awkward position.
Second, authors deserve the right to protect and preserve their mental health. Authors receive official critiques through their publishing team. Like everyone, they deserve a social media experience where they can enjoy connecting with peers and followers, rather than being notified every time a reader does not like their work.
Can I tag the author if I believe my feedback is valuable to them? Reviewer feedback is incredibly valuable! It’s vital to other readers, who should always be your first priority in review writing, and it is valuable to publishers.
Authors have teams that assist them in the editing of their books and those teams have systems in place when it comes to looking at and sharing outside feedback. When you tag the publisher, you’ve alerted that team to your review. From there the publisher is able to make the best decision for their imprint and their author in regards to what they do with your feedback.
Doesn’t my tag help my followers find the author more easily? We do love making readers’ lives easier, but in this case, it’s important to think of the author first. Readers can save your post, screenshot it, or easily search the author’s name to find out more, if they would like to.
I’ve heard you can tag authors in good reviews. Can I tag them then? If you are going to tag an author in your review, the best rule of thumb is for it to be a glowing review that does not contain any critique or criticism.
But I love engaging with my favorite authors online. Us too! Is there anything more fun than a beloved author commenting on one of your posts or giving you a follow?
The truth is that authors being inundated with notifications that range from politely critical to downright mean has led many authors to make choices necessary for their mental health such as not engaging at all with their notifications, switching their account to one that only posts updates of their upcoming books, or turning off the tagging feature completely. Being cautious of when you’re tagging authors helps to ensure the experience is a positive one for all!
I’m just so excited I got approved! Can I tag the author to tell them? If you’re posting to say that you were approved for a book and cannot wait to dive in, tagging the book’s author can be a nice way to show that you’re eager to read their work.
Should I tag audiobook narrators? This is a great question! When it comes to narrators, the same rules above for authors apply.
Being thoughtful about when you tag authors and narrators helps make bookish social media spaces safer and more engaging for everyone!
Cross-check before posting Handles on social media platforms are entirely unique. Most publishers and authors use the same exact handle across all of their platforms, but occasionally there will be differences. Especially if you’re posting your review to multiple platforms, make sure you’re using the correct tag for that platform.
Another instance where a publisher (NetGalley included) may have different handles, is if they operate in multiple countries. Doing a little homework will help ensure that you’re tagging the correct account.
Determine the correct imprint For example, on NetGalley “Avon and Harper Voyager” are listed as a single publisher. These are two separate imprints focusing on different genres. You do not need to tag both in your reviews. Instead, look at the title details page to see the appropriate imprint listed beside their publisher name.
Fit tags into the disclosure For the sake of transparency, readers are encouraged to disclose if the book they’re reviewing was gifted to them. It’s easy to combine this with your NetGalley and publisher tag by including a line such as: “Thank you (name of publishing company) for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.”
Utilize hashtags Don’t forget that hashtags are another fantastic way of helping your post reach its intended audience. Hashtags for the book’s title, author, genre, and more can be helpful for both you and your followers looking to engage with similar content. Here’s more about how to best use hashtags !

Kelly Gallucci
Kelly Gallucci is the Executive Editor of We Are Bookish, where she oversees the editorial content, offers book recommendations, and interviews authors and NetGalley members. When she's not working, Kelly can be found color coordinating her bookshelves, eating Chipotle, and watching way too many baking shows.
This was extremely helpful! Especially about when and when not to, tag authors. Thank you Annette Geiss
Thanks for the concise and helpful advice, Kelly. In Instagram, do you recommend tagging publishers in the comments (which shows up in their notifications) or in the picture (which sends them a DM), or both? Thanks!
That’s a great question! There are definitely pros and cons to each, and publishers will have different opinions about what is the most helpful for them.
The pro of tagging in a photo is that it’ll appear on that publishers tagged page, which makes it easier for other readers to discover. But if you’re tagging a larger account, those kinds of tags can sometimes get lost in their DMs.
Tagging a publisher in the caption of your photo can mean that the notification is easier for them to find in their notifications list, and it ensures they aren’t receiving notifications for every comment on your post (which happens if you tag them in the photo). But you will lose out on the discoverability of your photo showing up in their tagged photos.
Truly it all comes down to your personal preference. I don’t think you can go wrong either way (or as you mentioned, doing both!).
Very helpful, thanks!
Thank you for this wonderfully informative post. I’ve only recently started using Instagram and this has helped me a lot.

The 31 Most Popular Hashtags For Book Lovers
But in case you don’t spend a lot of time on social media (and hey, we READ, not all of us are sitting around on social media all day, so don’t judge!), a hashtag is:
On Twitter , the pound sign (or hash) turns any word or group of words that directly follow it into a searchable link. This allows you to organize content and track discussion topics based on those keywords. So, if you wanted to post about the Breaking Bad finale, you would include #BreakingBad in your tweet to join the conversation. Click on a hashtag to see all the posts that mention the subject in real time. ( Mashable )
In short, as explained in the video below, a hashtag allows us to “filter down the overflow of online content and find people who share the same interest as you .”
Is there any book hashtag etiquette you need to know about?
When hashtagging, it’s best to just use common sense. In other words, don’t be freakin’ annoying. Instagram allows you to put up to 30 hashtags per post! But do you need to use them all? Maybe not… OK. Probably not. Definitely not.
Twitter discourages “abuse” of hashtags, and while there are no limits that we could find for hashtagging on the other platforms, it’s safe to assume that most people like a targeted approach rather than hashtag spamming. So use prudently and read up on hashtag etiquette .
Now that you know how awesomely useful hashtags are, here are the best ones out there for readers and book lovers.
- #AmReading — Duh! Of course we’ll put this one first! #AmReading is “this is what I’m reading.”
- #BookLovers – Used by authors, publishers, and anyone who wants to discuss or sell a book.
- #Bibliophile — Just dive into everything books.
- #FreeBooks – Free. Books. That is all. (it changes from day to day)
- #BookAddict — Exactly what it says.
- #EBooks – Looking for something to download? This hashtag is for you! It’s kind of a mixed bag, however, and you may need to wade through a bit of spammy stuff to get to the good stuff.
- #Books – Self explanatory. Books, books, books.
- #Bookshelves or #Bookshelf — Want bookshelf porn? We’ve got it.
- #BookPhotography — Just photos of books. Good photos of books.
- #BookstoreBingo – Amusing hashtag featuring anecdotes from bookstores.
- #KindleBargains or #KindleBargain – Featuring Kindle book deals.
- #BookChat – Book discussion hashtag.
- #LitFict – Discussion and sharing of literary fiction books.
- #GoodReads — Connect with others in the Good Reads community, the most active group of book lovers online.
- #IReadEverywhere — For we who read in weird places. Bathtub, in a tree, at a basketball game? Take a photo and upload it with the tweet.
- #Fiction and #Nonfiction – Discusses and shares books.
- #WomensFiction – Featuring fiction choices for women.
- #GreatReads – People sharing great reads on Twitter.
- #Kindle – Items of interest to Kindle users and lovers of Kindle books. (can sometimes be polluted with too many ads from Amazon, though…)
- #WhatToRead – Book recommendations from other book lovers on Twitter (or Instagram, same hashtag)
- #Suspense – Featuring discussion and recommendations for Thrillers, Action Adventure, and Suspense titles.
- # BookWorld — Other book obsessed people.
- #ChickLit – Discussion and recommendations of ChickLit topics.
- #PopBooks — Popular books.
Instagram hashtags for book lovers:
- #bookstagram — Bookshelf porn, screenshots of what people are reading, photos of cool books, and reading/book memes.
- #EpicReads — This is mostly jphotos of beautiful books and book culture.
- #Books — Exactly what you’d think it is.
- #BookAddict — More of the same.
- #BookClub — Still more, but tends toward intellectualism.
- #BookNerd — One of the more eclectic Instagram book tags.
- #BookPorn — Warm and fuzzy pics of books and people reading.

10 TikTok Book Reviewers You Should Be Following
Kate is a 2011 Drake University grad, where she received her BA in magazine journalism. A hopeless romantic with a cynical heart, Kate will read anything that comes with a content warning, a love triangle, and a major plot twist. Twitter: @katekrug Blog: http://snarky-yet-satisfying.com

We also know that BookTok has its fair share of drama (helloooo Hockey BookTok Controversy of 2023 ), but I think it is also clear that these videos have encouraged people to pick up a book, whether they are devoted readers or trying to get back into the habit. What #BookTok has done for many creators, the industry, and a resurgence of love for books cannot be ignored. As with all social media platforms, we can hold both good and bad simultaneously.
Also, let’s just say it: while the TikTok FYP is amazing for curating your own experience, it’s all too easy to get stuck in a non-diverse echo chamber. Every few months, I highly recommend doing a search within the #BookTok or other related hashtags to find some new faces or even crowd-sourcing from friends. We’ve got an entire article on diversifying your BookTok FYP .
So now I’m going to take you on a tour of my FYP and recommend some top-notch BookTokers whose opinions I regard highly and have taken many recommendations from. We’re talking about content quality here, not necessarily the size of their following. No matter what, I will stop scrolling and watch these TikTok book reviewers’ videos in their entirety each time.
1. Tritney – @Tritney
This creator does a series called Spice vs Spice where she reads a spicy romance book while indulging in some spicy food. Combining two of my favorite things on this app — I absolutely adore these videos. This is also the account where I learned about the infamous sentient door novella. IYKYK.
@tritney I’m stuffed on buldak chapate & she’s stuffed by a pillow! #spicevsspice #stuffedsylviamorrow #spicyromancereads ♬ original sound – tritney🍓
2. Ayushi – @BookWormBullet
Ayushi is my absolute go-to creator for any South Asian recommendation. I appreciate her commentary on the books she reads and also the genre and author diversity!
@bookwormbullet 📚 MAYA’S LAWS OF LOVE by @Alina Khawaja!! Thank you @Harlequin Trade Publishing for the copy! 🫶🏽 #booktok #desibooks #desibooktok #southasianbooks #southasianbooktok #mayaslawsoflove #pakistani #bollywood #k3g #ddlj #srk #desi #desitiktok #romancebooks #bookrecommendations #bookwormbullet ♬ original sound – riya
3. Muhammad – @GoatFantasyBooks
I’m typically not a repeat reader, especially for massive epic fantasies. But if anyone could convince me to reread Brandon Sanderson, it would be Muhammad. His passion for the genre is infectious and truly makes me to want read more fantasy.

4. Abbie – @ AbbieKonnick
I came for the books and stayed for her lovely personality and yummy recipes (and, of course, I stayed for the books, too!) Also, if I get a Kindle Unlimited subscription to read every Freida McFadden, it will definitely be because of her.
@abbiekonnick Replying to @mistykay85 Just me and my *hot takes* here with Miss Freida McFadden 🙈📚 WHAT ARE YOUR FAVS? #freidamcfadden #freidamcfaddenbooks #freidamcfaddenrankings #thrillerbooktok #thrillerbookrecs #neverliefreidamcfadden #theexfreidamcfadden #thehousemaidfreidamcfadden #theteacherfreidamcfadden #theinmatefreidamcfadden #top5thrillerbooks #thrillerbooks #fyp #amazonbooks #topthrillerbooks #booktok #bookish ♬ Autumn Leaves – Timothy Cole
5. Marines – @MyNameIsMarines
I found Marines after her take on the hockey romance drama ended up on my FYP, and it was an instant follow. She’s so incredibly smart and I always value her reviews and opinions on books.
@mynameismarines its ambiguous at best #books #booktok #sjm #acotar ♬ original sound – Mari – booktok + media reviews
6. Brandon – @Baker.Reads
I read Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke on his recommendation, and it was so unhinged that it blew my mind. Now, I watch all of his videos not necessarily to get recommendations, but to hear the out-of-the-box plots. I’m also a sucker for a video that starts with ‘These are the most disturbing books I’ve ever read.”
@baker.reads #Inverted dark reads to keep you hooked!! #booktok #bakerreads #horrorbooks #disturbingbooks #psychologicalthriller #bookrecommendations ♬ original sound – Brandon Baker • baker.reads
7. Kayla – @KaylaBerman_
Anyone giving love to my fave, Jodi Picoult, is an instant follow from me. I also love how she adds commentary and talks about the books she necessarily didn’t enjoy. It’s always a good sign when I can appreciate a “negative” review just as much as a positive one.
@kaylaberman_ Let me know your thoughts if you have read any of these!! 💭📖 #booksineverseeonbooktok #booksineversee #shouldireadit #booksidontseeonbooktok #booksidontsee #booktok #booklover #books #unpopularbooks ♬ original sound – books with kay ✨📚
8. Az – @Azhangia
Something about Az’s videos is so calming. I love her video editing style! Also, hot tip: her playlists are A+ for both background music while reading and even for workday concentration.

9. Aubrei – @EarlGreyPls
Aubrei has a series where she talks about the words she learned through reading, and it has inspired me to do the same. I love expanding my vocabulary, and it’s been a wonderful addition to my reading routine.
@earlgreypls too much chortling tho #funnystoryemilyhenry #emilyhenry #berkleypartner ♬ original sound – aubrei
10. Zoranne – @Zoranne_
I found Zoranne after I finished The Will of the Many and needed to see other people’s opinions. I love her passion, and she always has me nodding to her videos.

Top 20 #Hashtags For Your Book on Twitter & Instagram (or, Mastering the Art of the #Hashtag)
By Haley BCU
Haley BCU is the author of Four Letter Words published in January by Can’t Put it Down Books. She is a master of the hashtag.
So, you wrote a book! Let me be one of the many who will congratulate you, be impressed with your dedication and hard work, and purchase a copy! That’s what you wanted to hear, right? But who am I? Isn’t that the question?
No, the question isn’t who. The who is ever-changing. It’s how . How do you find me, your potential reader? A person ready and willing to drop some hard earned coin on your passion project. But… If we never connect, we are forever destined to be two ocean liners passing on an inky black night; missing one another by what might be inches or miles, but we’ll never know unless you #use #your #hashtags .
And not like that. Hash-tagging everything from here to Kingdom come will do nothing but make your social media post look unprofessional and spam riddled. Why would I want to drop cold cash on a spam-spewing, unprofessional author tagging desperately from their Twitter account? The simple answer? I wouldn’t. However, there are easy rules to follow when when it comes to utilizing hashtags for people to find your book in an endless literary sea.
Let’s start with the aforementioned social network, the one designed to showcase your writing in less than 280 characters: Twitter. Did you know the most common length of a Tweet is a mere 33 characters? Essentially, what that means is you can pack your Tweet with the full 280, but if you do so with every-single-post you’re crossing into spam territory. Thankfully, Twitter etiquette is far simpler than real-life etiquette, or this writer would be screwed, blued, and tattooed. Commonly use between two and five hashtags per post, but no more than six. Don’t simply hashtag what looks catchy or cool. Start with the day of the week. For almost all days, excluding Monday and Saturday, there’s a corresponding hashtag. If your calendar begins with Sunday, the beginning of your week is #SampleSunday: where you can offer a link ( http://bit.ly will shorten any link free) with a downloadable sample, driving traffic to your website/mailing list in one simple move. If poetry or songwriting is your style this is ideal and extremely simple; cut and paste a stanza. #TeaserTuesday is next. You might consider reusing Sunday’s sample strategy. I implore you take it a step further. Offer readers something new. Either share an unreleased snippet of work, or make a creatively-worded blog post hyping your next upcoming project. #WriterWednesday is a true free-for-all, and time to stand out from the crowd. This is the day to use your best tagline or piece of “Ad copy,” refresh your timeline, and choose a new pinned Tweet. Having the same pin becomes tiresome, so find new creative ways to change the look of your feed while keeping your current project front and center. #IndieThursday is for the majority of us, whether we’ve set out completely on our own or are working with an independent publisher. Unless you’re rep’d by one of the big guys this is your time to shine. The same way people love a farmer’s market, they love the pat on the back they can give themselves from supporting an artist that isn’t entirely mainstream. This brings us to the day of days for Tweeting about your book, because you’re Tweeting into the wind without a substantial following to absorb your words. #FollowFriday is the official hashtag, but can be abbreviated to #FF if you find your post becoming lengthy, or the more specific #FridayReads or #StoryFriday . I will stress the importance of this day above all others. If you’re going to miss posting any day during the week (tip: avoid this with “scheduled posts”), I stress you make it any day but Friday. Friday is the golden day, a day to actively seek out new writers to follow, because along with those writers come a built-in audience of readers. Treat it like your mom sent you to the mall for a job, and you can’t leave without scheduling an interview. Set goals for yourself, and set them high. A dedicated fifteen minutes a day has the potential to completely alter and shape your desired audience, and on Friday that chance is magnified.
Along with these semi-daily hashtags, I’ve compiled a list of the top 20 most liked and re-shared tags related to writing. Select only those relevant to your style, add your chosen genre, and continue following the rule of no more than six hashtags per Tweet.
#Amazon #AmWriting #Author #Book #BookGiveaway #Ebook #Freebook #IndieAuthor #IndiePub #Kindle #LitFic #MustRead #MSWL (abbreviated industry term “Manuscript Wish List”) #New #Novel #NoveLines (for quotes) #Paperbacks #Quotes #Story #WritingCommunity
And one more for “good luck,” my absolute favorite tag, #WritersLift. It’s writers supporting writers, by highlighting and sharing the work or WIP (“Work in Progress”) of others in the #WritingCommunity . I admittedly use #WritingCommunity with nearly every post, encroaching on my character count but keeping my name relevant in the largest active community of writers in the known universe.
Now that I’ve dropped the term easy more than once, let me show you the legitimately easy social network: Instagram. It boasts more active over-all users than Twitter, and many who don’t utilize social media otherwise have an Instagram. The theoretical artistic anonymity appeals to a vast audience, and for those who might not read an entire tweet – a striking image could better suit a wider audience. I can’t say there’s no such thing as too many hashtags on Instagram, but the limit of thirty (as opposed to the suggested max of six on Twitter) feels like freedom. My advice? Use every single one, and play with the format of your posts. Use the Return/Enter key to place them further down the post so it appears less cluttered, with simply your subtitle and short link to your current project beneath your chosen image. Here are your top twenty most liked and re-shared Instagram tags related to writing:
#AmWriting #Art #Author #Authors #Bibliophile #Book #Bookstagram #eBook #IndieAuthor #Kindle #Literature #Novel #Quote #Quotes #Read #Reading #Story #Writer #WritersLift #WritingCommunity
Now, I know I suggested you go all out and use thirty, but only offered twenty tags. Here’s where your writing skills come into play. Along with adding your genre or style, create one unique hashtag for your current project. It’s a great way to push brand recognition, and when clicked it’s a great way for potential readers or even publishers to view specific posts related only to your creative work. While self-promotion can appear confusing, endless, and tedious; this article exists to illustrate it doesn’t have to be, and even you can master the art of the #hashtag .

The master list of bookish hashtags for booktok, bookstagram & twitter.
In today’s digital era, one of the best ways for book lovers, authors, and publishers to connect and share their passion for literature is through social media platforms like TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram. With billions of posts circulating on these platforms, the challenge is finding the book recommendations for you. Enter the humble hashtag: a simple, yet powerful tool that can help you navigate the bustling social media landscape and cultivate your own vibrant community of bibliophiles. This page will give you a master reference list of bookish hashtags to plug into the social media platform of your choice when you want to find new stuff to read.
On the flipside, this list can also help content creators, reviewers, writers, and anyone who likes to share what they read. You can use this list as a reference point when creating a book-related post.
How to use this Bookish Hashtag list
Mix and match bookish hashtags from the lists below!
I would advise against simply bulk copy/pasting and posting hashtags. Too many hashtags will make a post look cheap. You want to maintain an authentic post aesthetic when posting any content on social media. For that reason, I recommend selecting a maximum of five hashtags for each post, using the ones that best represent the content of the post.
And remember, if you’re posting about a specific book, then you’ll want to use the specific hashtag for that book as one of your hashtags. Look for the author or publisher’s posts about the book to see which hashtag they’re using for that book.
For example, if you’re writing about Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns & Roses, then include the hashtag #ACOTAR or #Acourtofthornesandroses
