What is an interview presentation?

As you progress further in your career, particularly to executive level, you may be asked to give a presentation for interview. Perhaps you’ve been asked to conduct research and present your findings to a panel, complete a task and show how you approached it, put together a business plan and present your ideas, or even give a presentation about yourself and how you would excel in the role. Whatever you are presenting about, how you approach it should remain the same.

Many people find giving presentations intimidating, especially during an interview when you’re already nervous, but it’s something that you may have to do throughout your career – the sooner you tackle this skill, the better.

Why are you being asked to do a presentation for a job interview?

Many employers opt for a presentation-style interview as it gives a better overview of your general aptitude when compared to, or combined with, a traditional question and answer interview, like a competency-based interview . The interviewer is looking for proof that you can do the job and that you possess the required skills and traits.

Additionally, if you put time and effort into your presentation, this will highlight to the hiring manager that you are committed to the role and enthusiastic about joining the company. How many times have you been asked in an interview ‘Why do you want this position?’ or ‘What is it about this role that attracted you to it?’. They want to know how much you want this position, rather than just any position.

How to prepare a presentation for an interview

Where do you start? What should you include? The presentation is your opportunity to showcase your knowledge, experience, and communication skills as well as your organisational skills and diligence – so start with the job description and person specification and pick out key skills and traits that the company is looking for. Then you can prepare your presentation around what they want to see.

For example, if the business is looking for someone creative, pay great attention to the style of your presentation. If it is looking for someone who is a confident public speaker, spend more time perfecting your speech. If attention to detail is paramount in the role, double and triple check your spelling and grammar. This is a great starting point and gives you something to build your presentation around.

What to include in an interview presentation

Although you may be tempted to go all out and show your potential employer that you are committed to the job, don’t fall into the trap of creating a 30-slide presentation with reams of text. Try to keep each slide short and significant and aim for no more than 10 slides. This ensures the information you deliver is memorable and will help you to stand out from other interviewees. Some interviewers may even give you a specific amount of time for your presentation, make sure you factor this in and don’t go over the time limit – otherwise you may appear to have poor time management skills.

Another way to make sure your presentation engages hiring managers is to include a range of formats to help you illustrate your points. Include graphs, statistics, diagrams, video clips, and images to help break up large volumes of text and maintain the attention of the interviewers.

If you are conducting research as part of your presentation, include quotes from industry leaders and/or research pieces. This gives your points authority and demonstrates your commercial awareness.

You should also try to incorporate the company’s colours, fonts, or style in your presentation. This will show that you have done your research and highlights your brand awareness.

Finally, check your spelling and grammar thoroughly! Small mistakes can really undermine the content of your presentation.

Tips for presenting at the interview

Presenting is a skill which can be learnt. Even if you are not a confident public speaker, the more you practice, the better you will become.

Present confidently and enthusiastically - Remember to speak clearly, make eye contact, and use open body language.

Don’t just read the slides - There is nothing worse than watching a presentation where the presenter has their back to you the whole time just reading reams of text from their PowerPoint notes.

Try not to talk too fast - Make sure you breathe, and take your time.

Practice, practice, practice - Ensure you are well rehearsed so that you are familiar with the structure of your presentation and are able to deliver it smoothly. If possible, practice your presentation with family members or friends to get used to speaking in front of other people.

Arrive early to give yourself time to set up the presentation and settle any nerves - Get comfortable with PowerPoint and presentation equipment. Make sure you know how to work any projectors, screens, or remote controls before you begin to avoid any awkward stumbles or pauses.

Stay within the allocated time - If you have not been given guidance on length, aim for the 10-minute mark. Time your presentation when you are practising to make sure it will fit within the time limit. If you need to reduce the content of your presentation, cut out the least relevant or weakest points.

Be prepared to adapt - You may have practised your presentation in a certain way, but the interviewer might not respond accordingly. Be prepared to be interrupted by questions or further discussion unexpectedly.

Breathe and try to enjoy it - By relaxing, you will find yourself presenting better and, if you enjoy it, your interviewers will respond to that and be better engaged with what you are saying.

Tips for keeping the interview presentation simple

It can take a lot of work to make something simple, yet effective, and when it comes to interview presentations less is often more. Keep it short - As previously mentioned, try to keep each slide short and aim for no more than 10 slides in total.

One idea per slide - To make sure your presentation is clear and concise, each slide should represent a different point/idea you want to make.

Stick to the important bits only - If you don’t think it’s important enough to spend time on, don’t have it on your slide.

Use the 4x6 rule - Aim for either four bullet points with six words per bullet point, or six bullet points with four words per bullet point. This way, your slides won’t look too busy.

Minimal text - Instead of writing paragraphs of text, use bullet points and a minimum font size of 24.

What's better for your interview presentation? Cue cards or presenting from memory?

Should you use cue cards in your presentation for interview or try to present from memory?

The answer to this question depends on what you feel most comfortable doing. If you find that having cue cards will help ease your nerves and ensure that you don’t forget your speech, then there is nothing wrong with that.

However, if you choose to use cue cards, you should not rely too heavily on them. You shouldn’t stand in front of the interviewers and look down at the cards continuously, neither should you write your whole speech out on the cards and read directly from them. They are cue cards for a reason and should only give you prompts on what to talk about. If your interview presentation has a lot of statistics on, using cue cards to remember the figures if you are unable to memorise them all is an excellent strategy.

What to do when things go wrong

You can practice your interview presentation as much as possible, but something may still go wrong and it’s important to be prepared for this eventuality. Here are some things that could go wrong and how to deal with them: Technical issues

There is not a lot you can do to prevent technical issues, especially if you are using someone else’s computer. But there are ways you can prepare just in case. Ensuring you have access to multiple sources of your presentation is key. Email the file to yourself and the recruiter, bring a copy on a USB stick and printed handouts. This way you are covered if anything goes wrong with the file you’re intending to use.

Your mind goes blank

Even those who are pros at presenting can sometimes lose their train of thought and find that their mind goes blank. The key here is not to panic. If possible, take a bottle or glass of water in with you and use this chance to take a sip, breathe and try to relax. Then look at your presentation slide or your cue cards and pick up where you left off. It may be helpful to repeat the last point you made as saying it out loud could spark your memory for your next point.

You are asked a question that you don’t know how to respond to

If you have allotted time at the end of your presentation to allow the interviewer to ask any questions (which is recommended), don’t worry if someone asks a question that you are not sure on. It may be that the interviewer is looking to see how you respond to a challenging question, so how you react is often more important than the answer itself.

If you do not understand the question, ask the person to explain. There is nothing wrong with doing this and shows more confidence than just saying that you don’t know. If you understand the question but are not sure of the answer, then admit that you don’t have the full answer, provide what information you do have, and offer to come back to them at a later date with a complete answer.

Slide 1 - Introduction – Reiterate the objectives you have been set and lay out the structure of your presentation so that the interviewers know what to expect. Slide 2 - About you – Detail your professional experience, skills and working style. Slide 3 - Company history – Give a brief summary of the company history, any milestones or awards. Slides 4-7 - Answering the brief – Give your responses to questions you’ve been asked to answer, the benefits and limitations of your suggestions. Slide 8 - Question and answers – Include a slide titled ‘questions and answers’ as a cue to pause for interaction. Slide 9 - Conclusion – Sum up the key points you have made, reach a decision, and explain your reasoning. Slide 10 - Personal achievements – End the interview on a high with a brief slide highlighting achievements that show how you will succeed in the role.

But the interview presentation can be just as, and is likely more important than, the questions you answer: And is typically where many potential candidates are rejected from the interview process.

The interview presentation will also help you to understand whether the job is one that would be right for you. The presentation task will likely be something you will be doing in the role everyday, or something that is of crucial importance. So the interview presentation task can give you more insight into the role than you can get from asking questions in the interview.

The 5 Things Your Job Interview Presentation Needs to Show

Before we get into the practical tips for your interview presentation, there are a few essential things that your presentation must show:

1. That you understood the task and the job you’ll be doing.

All too often we see candidates who have rushed into an interview task, without really taking the time to understand the task or understand what the employer was really looking to see. 

Because it’s feedback we hear from the employers we work with all the time. It’s crucial to make sure you understand what the employer wants to see from your task.

2. Your technical experience and expertise.

Pretty obvious, but pretty important. If you’re given a technical task, you need to show that you’re an expert at what you’ve been asked. This can mean going back and doing some revision around this area, to refresh your memory and prepare yourself for any questions you might face.

3. That you can handle yourself in a high-pressure situation.

Being cool under pressure is an essential skill and is an attractive quality in almost every job. Conversely, while someone may be great on paper, if they can’t articulate themselves or crumble under pressure, that can be a huge red flag to employers.

4. You can communicate well with clients and colleagues.

Communication is key, especially in a position where you’ll be working closely with clients or colleagues. And if you can’t articulate yourself effectively in a presentation setting, employers will be hesitant to put you in a role where you will be presenting to clients.

5. That you really want the job.

If you’re in the interview, then it’s fairly obvious that you want the job you’re interviewing for. But one of the things that employers will look for is who really wants the job.

Putting in the effort, preparing for any questions they may have and rehearsing your presentation, will show the interviewer that you’re serious about the opportunity.

13 Interview Presentation Tips and Steps to Success

These 13 tips will outline the steps you need to take when creating, presenting and what you need to do after your interview presentation.

1. Understand your audience and what they are looking for

The most important tip we can give is to understand what your audience, the interviewer, is looking for from your presentation. 

If you’re interviewing for an IT Account Manager position and asked to give a mock pitch to clients, is it the contents of your presentation that really matters? Probably not. 

Instead, the interviewers are looking to see that you present yourself well, can communicate effectively, and have a technical understanding of what you’re selling.

2. Keep it nice and short

Nobody wants to sit through a seemingly endless presentation. So try to keep the presentation you give nice and short: As concise as it needs to be.

If you’re really not sure about the length of the presentation, you can always ask the interviewer about how long they would like the interview presentation to be.

If you haven’t been given an outline for how long your presentation should take, you might be tempted to put in as much useful information as you can, to show off your knowledge and skills. But we advise having only the necessary information you need to complete the task at hand or answer the questions that you need to.

3. Have a structure for your presentation

Imperative to having a streamlined and professional interview presentation, is having a solid structure. Whatever the subject of your presentation, you should have an introduction, the main points you want to address, and a conclusion.

4. Use images and graphs, not just text

Make your presentation more engaging by including images, graphs, diagrams and maybe even a video if you’re feeling a bit creative. 

This prevents your presentation from becoming monotonous, and can help to break up slides of text after text or large sets of data.

5. Don’t try to fit too much information on each slide

It can be tempting to try and use up all the real estate on your presentation slides, cramming them with information.

But we advise having slides with just the key points that you want to explore, or a graph that will support what you say.

Keeping the majority of the information off the slides gives you more to talk about, stops everyone from sitting and reading the slides in silence, and will keep the interviewers attention on you. 

6. Try to match the branding of the business

Something we advise that doesn’t take too much effort, is mirroring the branding of the business you’re applying for a role at. 

What we mean by this, is to say you’re applying for a job at BT. Going on the BT website and downloading some pamphlet or e-book from their website and matching the logos and overall colour scheme that they use.

It’s not the most important thing in the world, as it won’t save your interview presentation if everything else goes wrong. But it does show you’re putting in the extra effort to impress the interviewer.

7. Double check for any mistakes

And in opposition to this, is making sure that there are no mistakes in your presentation. Because having simple errors or spelling mistakes in your presentation isn’t a great look, and the interviewer will be sure to notice. 

So make sure to proofread your presentation. And even better, have someone else double check it for you.

8. Practise presenting to yourself, or to friends/ family

The difference between someone presenting for the first time and someone who has rehearsed is absolutely noticeable to a hiring manager. So we strongly advise taking the time to practise your interview presentation beforehand. 

Not only will this help you appear more natural when you present, it will also help you to know if your presentation is too long and needs to be cut down.

9. Be confident when presenting

Not everyone is a natural born public speaker. But exuding confidence in your presentation is essential. Which means:

  • Taking your time and not rushing through your presentation. 
  • Speaking confidently and clearly.
  • Asking whether you’ve been clear with what you’ve said so far.
  • Even your body language.

Because if you struggle to present confidently and can’t articulate yourself properly, then the employer won’t be confident that you will be confident in front of customers or clients.

10. Be confident with your body language

When you present, the interviewer will be aware of your body language and what it says about you: So it’s important that you are aware of it too, and you’re in control of it. This can involve making eye contact, using appropriate and positive hand gestures, having a good posture, and smiling.

11. Don’t go overboard on time, and leave time for questions

We’ve mentioned the length of your presentation earlier, but it’s important that you don’t go over the assigned time limit. 

It shows poor time management, poor communication skills (if you take too long to get to the point), and an employer would likely be more hesitant to put you in front of customers or clients.

You should also aim to leave about 5 minutes of time at the end of your presentation to give the interviewers the opportunity to ask any questions, without going overboard on time.

12. Think what questions you need to expect

Predicting the questions you’re going to face seems like an impossible task. After all, you could be asked about pretty much anything. But in reality, understanding the task and what the interviewer is looking for will help you to have an idea of the kinds of questions you’ll be asked.

For example, if you’re giving an interview presentation that is a mock pitch to clients, then you can attempt to think of some objections that a client would raise about your pitch. Or if you were listening to your presentation, what are the questions you would ask?

13. Thank them for their time, and reiterate your interest in the position

When you’ve finished your presentation and interview, remember to thank the interviewer for their time and say again how interested you are in the position and in joining the company.

When an interviewer is trying to make a decision between a few competitive candidates, being the one who is eager and actively wants the job can be a deciding factor.

What to Do If Your Interview Presentation Doesn’t Go to Plan?

Hopefully your interview presentation goes perfectly and you can skip this section completely. But just in case it doesn’t, here are a few things that could go wrong in your presentation and how to avoid them.

Technical difficulties

Technical difficulties can be frustrating at the best of times but especially in a high-pressure situation like an interview. And even worse, they can be completely out of your control.

The best thing you can do is to prepare for any eventuality.

Email a copy of your presentation to yourself. Have another copy on a USB memory stick that you bring with you. Print out a few copies to hand out as a backup. Try to cover all bases where possible.

You are asked a question you don’t know the answer to

While you can try to predict the questions you’ll be asked, it’s unlikely you’ll get them all. And you may even be asked a question to which you simply don’t have the answer. 

So instead of trying to come up with an answer on the spot, it’s best to pause and ask for a minute to consider. Or if you’re truly stumped, be upfront and say you don’t have an answer at that time but will revisit at the end of the interview, or at a later date.

While it would be an ideal situation to have an answer to every question, asking for time to revisit shows confidence and self-awareness.

Your audience seem disinterested or not engaged

Interview presentations are necessarily the most exciting things in the world. Especially if an interviewer has conducted multiple of the same interview. 

So don’t be disheartened if the interviewers don’t seem the most engaged. And if they do, you can always ask the interviewers if everything you have said makes sense so far or if they have any questions about anything you’ve discussed up to that point.

This also helps to stop your interview presentation turning into a lecture and gives yourself a pause to collect your thoughts and take a break.

You’re going overboard on time

Before you go in, you should have a good idea of how long your presentation will last. Even so, you can find yourself going overboard on time when in the interview.

It’s important to be aware of how much time you have left and if you’re going to go overboard on time.

But you can prepare for this beforehand. Before you go into the interview, try to think of areas that you can trim or cut from your presentation just in case. That you would like to include if you have the time, but aren’t 100% necessary to keep in, or that you can summarise quickly if you need to.

How to Start a Presentation for an Interview

Interviews can be really tense situations. Throwing a presentation into the mix only adds to that pressure. What can you do to ease those nerves and start your presentation in a calm and confident manner? How can you captivate your audience and help assure them that you’re the right candidate for the job? This article outlines a number of useful tips to guide your interview preparation and address these important questions.

Preparing a Presentation – Where to Begin?

If you plan your presentation in advance you’ll increase your likelihood of success. Make sure you know what type of message you want to convey and think about the most effective way to deliver this message.

Ready? Take a look at our six preparation tips below.

1. Tell a personal story

Presentations can often be over-professional, impersonal affairs. But they don’t have to be.

Adding a storytelling element to your presentation can ensure that your delivery is both down-to-earth and professional at the same time, which will make your presentation a whole lot more engaging overall.

Think of any personal experiences of your own that are applicable to the content of your presentation. Do you have anything of value that could aid the delivery and help with engagement?

Example: Say you have an interview for a HR role at an international corporation HQ in the city. You’ve been told that you need to deliver a presentation on how you manage conflict in the workplace (we’ll use this example throughout).

By opening with a relevant story of your own about a time when you successfully and diplomatically resolved a conflict outside of the workplace – at home, or wherever it may be – you’ll:

  • Demonstrate your competency in this area
  • Ease any tension that is characteristic to the situation
  • Capture your audience’s attention with an account that can only be delivered by you – making it unique and remarkable
  • Openly display your personality and values, enabling the employer to make a better informed selection decision – beneficial for everyone involved

2. Use media

Starting your presentation can be the most difficult bit.

You’re tongue-tied, stumbling over words and your heart is beating so fast.

Give yourself the opportunity to collect yourself by using some form of media early on in the presentation.

Begin your presentation with a quick introduction to who you are and what the presentation is about (use a title slide and a ‘What I’ll cover’ slide, for example) and then incorporate a media break.

Use video, music, an infographic – whatever, as long it’s suitable and on-topic, use any form of media that allows you to have a breather and recover from that all too familiar fear of public speaking.

Example: so here we are again – biting your lips and fumbling with your hands as you wait to open your presentation for the HR role.

Your presentation is on conflict management, a fairly sensitive topic, which you’ll want to get right. But don’t sweat it; simply introduce yourself and your specific presentation details/content, then bring in an attention-consuming piece of useful media.

In our case, it could be a funny clip of workplace conflict from a TV Program such as The Office* – this will lighten the mood and create a talking point. You’ll be back in the driver’s seat, and you’ll be surprised by how quickly those nerves calmed down.

* Disclaimer: implement with appropriateness! Only you can decide on what sort of media will be acceptable to use in your situation, so think about this one carefully.

3. All eyes on you

Feeling a little more confident?

Create a memorable moment by temporarily presenting without the aid of a prompt.

Open your presentation with conviction by using a blank slide as your second slide.

Once you’ve introduced yourself and the topic of your presentation, most people will expect a thoroughly professional delivery from there on in.

Surprise them; switch the attention to you, shatter expectations, disrupt conventional presentation practice and display clear confidence in your ability to speak independently.

Using such a brave tactic will help in stimulating and retaining interest in your presentation throughout, and perhaps keep you top of mind when the employer is making a selection decision.

It will also show your potential employer just how much you know about the topic at hand.

Example: Conflict solving requires someone with a calm temperament and an almost instinctive ability to thoroughly – and empathetically – understand the issues faced by people other than yourself.

Show that you’re able to remain calm under scrutiny with all eyes in the room on you and truly understand a topic without any form of prompt using this tactic.

4. Incorporate props

Presentations can sometimes be a little boring to watch and listen to.

That’s no fault of your own; one person talking for a prolonged period of time is not a normal situation – how often does that actually happen in everyday life?

Engaging your audience during a presentation is a common problem that is widely discussed. I won’t go into it here as that’s not the core purpose of this post.

So what props should I use? Think what you can use/bring that will be both relevant and add value to your presentation.

If you can’t think of anything, then don’t bother – this tip will only work in set situations.

Example: For your conflict resolution presentation, you could bring in something that will create a talking point and engage your audience.

In this situation, we’ll go with a newspaper – you could start a debate about a widely discussed controversial topic, and use this quick exercise as an illustration of how you’re able to apply your conflict solving ability in any circumstance.

5. Start with something you know

It’s natural to be concerned about freezing and making mistakes in the presentation that you’re preparing for.

If that were to occur, it’d be likely to happen at or near the beginning of your presentation when your emotions are at their highest.

To ease those nerves and open in a calm and confident manner, it might be advisable to use content that you know inside-out – that way, you’ll feel more secure in the first few minutes of your delivery.

Once you’ve sailed effortlessly through that first part of the presentation, you’ll find the remainder of your content will flow just as easily now that you’ve settled those self-doubts.

Example: Your presentation on workplace conflict is expected to last 20 minutes – that’s a lot of content to get through!

Before you find yourself scrambling for the right words, simply introduce yourself and the topic of your presentation, then start with something such as:

  • Simple conflict stats that are easy to memorise
  • An article or study that you really like and have read a few times
  • Cornerstone conflict management knowledge that’s embedded deep in your brain

6. Engage your audience with an activity

A presentation is all about you.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be though.

By introducing an activity for your audience to get involved in, you can take the spotlight off you temporarily, and seize a rare opportunity to connect with your audience in a candid manner.

It’s pleasing just how much this strategy can reduce tension when starting your interview presentation. Once you’re able to start a dialogue with your audience, the unnatural situation becomes significantly more manageable.

Example: Well, you could make this one real interesting. Why not initiate a role play of a common workplace conflict, and then show the potential employers how you would deal with said conflict?

This is a fun exercise that shows your ability to apply the knowledge that you possess and will hopefully put your potential employers in a better mood for the rest of your delivery!

All of the techniques I’ve outlined above could be applied to almost any interview situation in which a presentation is required – now it’s over to you to get creative with how you’re going to actually implement these ideas!

In writing this post I made a conscious effort to consider different personality types in the interview presentation opening tips that I have suggested.

But these actionable methods represent only a very small proportion of ideas that you can utilise for making a lasting impression in your interview presentation.

Interview presentations are becoming a regular part of hiring practice. They are especially common for senior positions, or in industries that need strong communication skills.

An interview presentation is a short persuasive talk as part of an interview or assessment day . The employer will ask you to prepare a presentation on a specific topic in advance, or to present a blind presentation.

For a marketing position, you could be asked to market or sell a product, or to predict a market trend. Higher-level positions may require you to present a strategic outlook for the industry.

With blind presentations , a lot of the expectations are the same. The difference is that instead of preparing in advance, you will be given a topic on the day of the interview and will be given a limited time (maybe half an hour) to prepare.

In this situation, it is very important that you show the ability to think on your feet.

In every stage of the recruitment process, the employer is looking for a candidate who stands out .

They want an employee who knows their job and someone who will fit into the company culture.

Asking a candidate to give a presentation is another tool to help them assess whether that person is suitable for the role.

Interview presentations allow your employer to see the following key skills:

Step 1 . Research

The first thing you should do is research the company . This includes checking its media presence, recent news articles and social media posts.

You should also research the application process for the organisation. For larger companies, there will be online forum discussions about interview presentations. You could even post your own questions to find out more.

Finally, research the assigned topic thoroughly and fact-check all your content. Make sure everything you say is your own work.

Step 2 . Make Notes to Bring with You

If you are doing a blind presentation, you will likely be asked to present something about the industry or organisation. The best preparation is knowing plenty of information about the company and the latest industry news.

It is a good idea to put together some general notes , so that you can review these once you know the actual presentation topic.

On the day, you will have a set amount of time to prepare. This is usually less than thirty minutes, so accessible notes are key to performing well. Visual aids are not usually needed for a blind presentation.

Step 3 . Practise Your Delivery

Practise your presentation in front of an audience to make sure you are speaking slowly, clearly and confidently. Also time yourself, so you know you won’t run over time on the day.

For a successful presentation:

Your presentation should have a clear structure . Make sure the beginning and end are strong, as that is when the audience will pay the most attention.

Introduction – Make sure you begin with a confident and friendly welcome. Introduce yourself and give a quick overview of the topic you have been asked to discuss and your expected goals. It is a good idea to mention that you will leave plenty of time for questions at the end; this will help to avoid any interruptions.

Sections or themes – Separate the different areas within your presentation into key points for a clearer and more memorable delivery. Back up your arguments with evidence.

Summary and conclusion – Summarise your arguments and provide recommendations. Reiterate the topic and address how your presentation has met the expected goal. Make sure you end by thanking the audience and inviting questions.

How to Deliver Your Interview Presentation

The most important part of your presentation is how you present .

Interviewers are looking for candidates who are naturally professional. Someone who is confident, articulate and presentable.

Your delivery should be conversational but professional. The best way to practise this is to present to a trusted friend or relative, rehearse in the mirror or record yourself on camera.

When delivering your presentation, take note of the following:

Speak clearly and use a varied tone during your presentation. Don't speak too fast and be confident enough to pause often, especially between your key points.

Maintain eye contact with your audience throughout your presentation. Look from person to person as you talk, to seem more relaxed and keep everyone engaged.

Be positive throughout your presentation. Smile when you begin, keep smiling as you talk and conclude with a smile.

When presenting, stand up straight with your shoulders back. Have open body language and use your hands to emphasise what you are saying, but not excessively.

If you have been asked to pre-prepare your presentation, it is worth asking if you can present with visual aids .

Visual aids can help to keep your presentation on track, highlight key information and provide interest for your audience.

They are usually slides (PowerPoint, Prezi) or a poster. Some content-heavy presentations may need a handout, but this is rarely the case for an interview.

Here are some top tips for great visual aids:

Make sure your slides aren’t too text-heavy or cluttered . Give the headlines just enough information to grab their attention, but not detract from the message you are trying to deliver.

Use clear and professional fonts that can be read easily from a distance.

Use different communication formats such as graphs, video clips and professional images , but don’t go overboard. Avoid busy themes or animations, especially swirly slide transitions.

Use quotes and references from industry leaders or related research. However, make sure you provide references for anything you use that belongs to a third-party source.

Incorporate a few company colours or themes for brand awareness (but keep the main background colour of your slides white). Check out the company website for its communication style and company branding; try to match your visuals to that style.

Make sure all visuals are proofread and double-checked by someone else as well. The last thing you want is a glaring typo on the wall behind you.

  • Dress comfortably but professionally . Dress like you belong in the organisation.
  • Have your material organised and ensure that it is easily accessible.
  • Have multiple copies of your presentation with you. If you are bringing a laptop or digital content, bring a few backups on USB sticks or email your slides to yourself, just in case.
  • Get to your interview a little before your allocated time , especially if you need to set up your laptop before you start.
  • If you need to share presentation slides or other visual aids, have them ready to go and check that everything works before you start.
  • If it is a blind presentation, read the assigned topic a few times and then spend a few moments organising your thoughts . Use your notes for your presentation structure.

It is increasingly common to be asked to do a presentation as part of an interview. However, these presentations often have several important distinctions from others.

Fortunately, as long as you know what to expect, you can plan accordingly and make sure that your presentation is remembered for all the right reasons.

Forewarned is Forearmed

You have been invited to an interview for a job. The invitation to interview, however, has a paragraph at the bottom that says that, as part of the interview, you will be expected to present briefly (and a time limit is almost always given, usually five to ten minutes) on a given topic. You may be given a title, or asked to develop one.

There are a number of questions to which you may find it helpful to know the answers. For example:

  • Will the presentation be in the same room as the interview?
  • Will the interview happen first, or the presentation?
  • Will you have access to a laptop and projector or similar?
  • How many people will you present to?

You have a choice: do you phone up and ask, and risk looking a bit nervous, or do you just hope for the best?

The decision is really up to you. It is not unreasonable to ask if you will have access to a projector, and also if you can bring a handout for the interviewers. Other than that, you might have to play it by ear, and see if you feel able to ask more.

Who do you phone? It depends on who has invited you to the interview. If you have been invited by someone in the HR department, then it is not unreasonable to think of it as part of their job to deal with questions like that. If, on the other hand, you have been invited by someone quite senior, you might prefer to get in touch with their secretary or PA instead.

Developing the Content of your Presentation

It is reasonably common to ask you to present on something like the key challenges that you think you will face in your first month in the job , or how you plan to organise your induction into the new post .

Don’t panic! They don’t expect you to know what you’re doing before you’ve even started.

They do, however, expect you to have a reasonable idea of how to find out what you need to know.

Consider it your first test. Some good ways to approach information gathering include:

Phone a friend – do you know anyone working in that company or in a similar organisation or area of work? Give them a call, take them out for lunch, and pick their brains about the problems and challenges facing the company, and the area in which you will be working in particular.

Use the internet to do some research – as well as the company’s own website, have a look for news reports linked to the area in which you will be working and see what you can find out.

Use the clues in the job description and person specification – do these include requirements for particular skills that may not normally be associated with that kind of job? That might be a clue to a particular issue in the organisation.

Planning your Presentation

However, it’s important to think about a few points specific to interview presentations too, particularly:

You won’t be able to say everything that you’ve discovered in the space of five to ten minutes. Cut it down to the three main points that you want to make, and remember to emphasise that these are the three key areas.

What kind of visual aid will you use? If you are permitted to provide a one-page handout, how will it support your presentation?

How will you make your presentation stand out from among the crowd, in a good way? You may decide to do this by just being the best, or you could try starting by saying something memorable. Outrageous can work, but it can also be a bit risky, especially if you don’t know your interviewers. It depends a bit on the organisation and also the industry, so you will be best placed to decide what you can get away with.

Providing a Handout

Your one-page handout is what your interviewers will look at to remind them of your presentation. It therefore needs to showcase both the content of your presentation and your ability to summarise and show something in a brief visual form.

You could, of course, simply list your three key points, together with a few sentences about each one to summarise what you said. That will be perfectly acceptable.

But you could also produce something unique to you that showcases your thinking: a mind map, perhaps, or a visual summary of the situation, like a ‘rich picture’.

Ideally, you should use your handout as your notes for your presentation too, as it demonstrates that it really does capture your key points.

Handling Unusual Circumstances

You may well walk into your interview and find that something totally unforeseen has occurred.

For example, you have been told that you will be able to use PowerPoint, but there’s no laptop and projector because the interviewers have forgotten to organise it.

Don’t be thrown. Everyone else will be in the same situation.

Instead, use it as an opportunity to demonstrate that you are not put out by something unexpected since this is a valued skill. For example, have an alternative to slides, such as a one-page handout, or make a joke about technology always letting everyone down at crucial moments.

Your ability to handle problems in a good-humoured way will not go unnoticed.

Delivering your Presentation

You are unlikely to be expected to stand and deliver a presentation in an interview, because the room is likely to be very small.

However, it’s worth saying something like:

“ I think I’ll sit, as it’s a bit formal to stand. Unless of course you’d prefer me in full presentation mode? ”

They can then say if they want to see you do a formal presentation.

If you have been given a time limit for your presentation, do not go over it . You may have chosen not to practise fully, so as to be more spontaneous. However, be alert to how long your presentation is taking, and be ready to cut it short if necessary.

Do not rely on being able to see a clock in the room.

Instead, either take a clock that you can put on the table in front of you, or take off your watch, and place it where you can see it clearly at a glance.

It’s not a good idea to keep glancing at a watch on your wrist, as it is an off-putting piece of body language.

People are conditioned to read it as ‘ I don’t really have time for you ’, and this isn’t the impression that you want to give your interviewers, even inadvertently.

Remember to speak slowly and clearly, and check that your interviewers look like they have understood your points. Be alert for any body language that suggests lack of interest or disagreement, as you may want to develop those points further.

Make sure that you clearly conclude your presentation by summarising your key points, before inviting questions from the interview panel.

Presenting in a remote (online) interview

It is not unreasonable to be asked to make a presentation in an online interview.

However, it brings some additional challenges on top of presenting in person.

First, you need to be confident that you will be able to handle the technology , and share your slides with the interviewers. If you have not done this before, you have a choice. You can avoid having slides altogether, email through a one-page handout before the interview, or ask someone for help beforehand so that you know how to share your slides.

One Final Message…

Above all, remember that you will be at your best if you are relaxed and confident.

This is hard in any interview situation, but you are testing whether you want to work there as much as they are assessing you. Be yourself, as much in the presentation as in the interview itself. Focus on presenting you: your ideas, your plans. You will then have the best chance of getting the job if it is the right job for you.

7 Tips to Help You Nail That Interview Presentation

You’ve been offered an interview for your dream job, and you are pumped! But as you hear more about your upcoming meeting, you realize you’re expected to deliver a presentation.

Your first instinct may be to panic, especially if you dislike public speaking . But don’t worry. As nerve-wracking as doing a presentation during an interview may sound, it’s also a chance for you to show just how awesome you are. (And if you’ve reached this round, odds are you are awesome!)

These seven steps will help you nail it.

1. Ask Lots of Questions

Before you begin crafting a 40-minute keynote, ask lots of questions about what to expect (like, if they actually only want you to speak for 10). Be sure to cover these:

  • How long should the presentation be?
  • Is your point of contact looking for you to demonstrate particular skills?
  • How many people will be in the room?
  • Are there facilities for slides?
  • What’s the IT setup?

2. Follow Instructions

If the hiring manager’s asked for a 10-minute presentation where you talk through how you’d plan a communications strategy, that’s exactly what you should give her. Don’t be tempted to go on for 12, 15, or (gasp!) 20 minutes.

Staying on target shows that you can manage your time, that you respect your audience, and that you can follow directions . If you run over, you’ll either be cut off halfway through or you’ll cost yourself time to discuss your other skills. So, stay within the constraints you’re given.

3. Have a Clear Structure

There are two benefits to organizing your presentation according to a specific structure: One, it’ll help you stay on track, and two, it’ll make it easier for the audience to follow along.

For example, if you’re using your presentation to share an app you’ve built, you might break it up into four parts: what you chose to build, why you built it in a particular way, how it works, and what the results were. You can even begin by explaining that that’s how your talk will be structured: This technique is a simple but effective way to help your audience follow (and remember) your presentation.

4. Differentiate Yourself

The presentation section of an interview is the perfect opportunity to let your personality shine. True story: A friend of mine was going for his dream job in tech and had to demonstrate his web development skills. He’d built lots of sophisticated apps at work, but he took a risk and decided to use the presentation section of the interview to demonstrate one of his personal projects. It was a custom animation of the Star Wars character Admiral Ackbar, shouting “It’s a trap!”

The panel loved it. It demonstrated the skills they were looking for, but also my friend’s sense of humor, creativity, and genuine passion for programming. In a competitive market, standing out from the crowd is what’s going to land you the job.

5. Stick to Technology You Know

Things have come a long way from PowerPoint. There’s now a ton of online programs and applications available to help you craft an all-singing, all-dancing presentation. But unless you’re already a pro at using one of these platforms, now is not the moment to spend hours teaching yourself Prezi or slides.com .

Your time is much better spent on the content of your presentation. Once you’re happy with that, you can start planning your slides, using whichever software you’re already comfortable with.

6. Have a Plan (and a Back-up Plan)

Let’s say you’re a Mac user, so you’ve prepared your presentation in Keynote. You’ve checked that the company’s technology is Mac compatible, you save your file to a USB, drop it in your bag and head to your interview. But when you get there, the office is full of PCs, your USB doesn’t work, and all of the beautiful slides you prepared exist only in your head.

It’s a nightmare scenario, but there are many things you can do to prevent it. Firstly, take your laptop. Even if the screen is small, it’s unlikely you’ll be presenting to more than three people, so they should be able to see. Also, if you have your laptop you may be able to save the file to a compatible format and still have your slides up on a big screen. (Pro tip: Don’t forget to pack the charger! Dead battery equals epic fail.)

If you don’t have a laptop always, always make sure you’ve emailed the slides to yourself and saved them as a PDF—which should work on anything. Finally, the one thing that never breaks down? Paper. Print a few copies of your slides and take them with you, just in case.

7. Practice (and Practice Again)

The only way to know whether your presentation is the right length is by practicing. And, rehearsing will also build your confidence and make you more fluent for the real thing. Ideally, perform your talk for someone you trust so you can get some honest feedback. But even if your only audience member is your cat, a trial run is still an essential part of your preparation.

When the day comes, try and remember that you’ve been invited to interview because the company has seen something in you and wants you to succeed. If you get nervous or lose your place, pause, have a sip of water, take a deep breath, check your notes, and get back into it.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
  • Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.

By doing this preparation, you’ll be better equipped to articulate why you’re a strong fit for the role during the interview.

2. Research the company

Start by exploring the company’s website, paying particular attention to their mission statement, values, and any recent news or accomplishments. Learn about their products or services, as well as their position in the market.

Familiarizing yourself with the company will show that you’ve done your homework and are serious about the opportunity.

You should also read about the company’s culture and work environment, either on their careers page or through employee reviews on sites like Glassdoor. 3. Prepare relevant examples of your work experience

4. Plan your answers

Take time to think about your responses to common interview questions . While you don’t want to sound overly rehearsed, having a general idea of what you want to say can boost your confidence and help you articulate your thoughts more clearly during the interview.

Be prepared to discuss the following:

  • Your strengths and how they relate to the job
  • Why you’re leaving your current job (focusing on growth opportunities rather than negative aspects of your current job)
  • Any employment gaps you may have
  • Your interest in the company and the specific role
  • Past failures or challenges (in a way that highlights your ability to learn and grow)

5. Learn about the STAR method

The STAR method is a structured approach to answering behavioral interview questions .

STAR stands for Situation , Task , Action , and Result . This technique helps you provide comprehensive, focused answers that clearly demonstrate your skills and experiences.

When using the STAR method, start by describing a specific Situation you faced, then explain the Task you were responsible for. Next, detail the Actions you took to address the situation, and finally, share the Results of your efforts.

6. Practice good speech and body language

Practice speaking clearly and at a moderate pace. Pay attention to your tone of voice, making sure that it conveys confidence and enthusiasm.

Equally important is your body language. Practice maintaining good posture, making appropriate eye contact, and offering a firm handshake. Be mindful of nervous habits like fidgeting or playing with your hair.

Remember to smile naturally and show engagement through your facial expressions. These non-verbal cues can help you appear more confident and approachable.

7. Have a friend interview you

Ask a friend or family member to play the role of the interviewer so you can rehearse your responses in a low-pressure environment.

Ask your mock interviewer for feedback on your answers, body language, and overall presentation. This exercise can help you identify areas for improvement before the actual interview.

8. Make a list of follow-up questions to ask the interviewer

Preparing thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer demonstrates your interest in the position and company.

Having questions can also help you gather important information to assess if the job is a good fit for you. Consider asking about:

  • Company culture
  • Opportunities for growth
  • Challenges the team is facing
  • The day-to-day responsibilities of the role

Avoid questions about salary or benefits at this stage unless the interviewer brings up the topic.

9. Bring a copy of your resume

Even though the interviewer will probably have your resume on hand, it’s always a good idea to bring a few extra copies. This shows that you’re prepared in case you’re meeting with multiple people or the interviewer doesn’t have your resume readily available.

You should also bring copies of any other relevant documents, such as references, work samples, or certifications (if applicable).

10. Dress appropriately

Dressing appropriately makes a good first impression and demonstrates your professionalism before you even begin speaking. Research the company culture to gauge the appropriate level of formality. When in doubt, it’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

11. Plan your route and arrive early

On the day of the interview, the last thing you want is to be stressed about arriving on time. Plan your route in advance, considering factors like traffic, parking, or public transportation schedules. Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early.

If you’re unfamiliar with the area, consider doing a trial run a day or two before the interview. This can help you identify any potential issues and feel more relaxed on the day of the interview. Arriving early gives you time to compose yourself, review your notes, and observe the office environment before the interview begins.

my interviewers interrupted my timed interview presentation

I’d be really interested to hear your take on a situation that cropped up for me while I was attending an internal job interview this week. I’d been asked to prepare a presentation of “no longer than” 10 minutes. I practiced plenty in advance and was generally coming in at 8 minutes, 30 seconds, so comfortably within. On the day of the interview, I was halfway through presenting my slide deck when one of the interview panel interrupted with a question, which I answered. This turned into three or four minutes of other queries and broader chat amongst the panel members — all very positive about the content — before they asked me to continue. I’d barely got any further when I was warned that I had less than a minute left: They hadn’t stopped the clock for their conversational detour. As a result, I had to push through the final couple of points far more swiftly than I’d intended. Fortunately the rest of the interview went well, though ultimately I didn’t get the role. During the call to inform me, the interviewer explained that another candidate had more management experience than me (fair). But upon asking for any other feedback, I was told that I should have had more confidence when presenting, particularly during the last minute or so, and that I could have planned the timing better. I thanked them for the feedback but I’ve been left wondering what I can really do with this for next time? I was hardly in a position to ban any questions, but putting my foot down and demanding extra presentation time to make up for their interruption sounds like a guaranteed way to lose the job. How can I work on this feedback?

It’s unlikely they wanted you to demand extra time to make up for the interruption.

But it’s very possible they assessed you in part on how well you handled the interruptions, like whether you were able to diplomatically regain control over the presentation and keep going — especially if presenting was a core function of the job. (In fact, if it was, they may have even interrupted intentionally to see how you handled it.) This isn’t necessarily 100% fair, because a lot of job candidates wouldn’t feel comfortable redirecting their interviewers — and if they wanted to assess that, they’d get better results by telling you beforehand that they wanted to see you demonstrate those skills, so you’d understand they were role-playing audience members and not worry as much about “interrupting” your job interviewers.

Or, if not that, they might have assessed you on whether you were able to recover smoothly and adjust on the fly in the time you had remaining.

Or they might not have intended to assess you on any of that, but a different candidate handled those things really well and that gave them an advantage.

It’s also possible the feedback means nothing at all — that when you asked for additional feedback beyond what they’d already offered, the person you were talking to just grasped for something without it being a factor that mattered much in their decision.

It’s hard to know whether there’s really anything here that would be useful to work on — but if you’re looking for something, I’d say it’s planning for audience interruptions and adapting in real time when they happen.

Presenting is a core part of what I do. Depending on the context, spending a significant amount of time taking questions and then not getting to all of my slides might be the correct way of handling the situation. It’s totally context-dependent.

I’ve been on the other side, too, where I was the client and someone came to me with slides that didn’t answer what I needed to answer, so we spent more time discussing and not doing the slides.

If they’re actually judging on the basis of this, that’s just so oddly specific.

It is always good to plan short, with optional adds. I used to do a lot of public speaking and workshops and learned early on that what timing they gave me was not reliable. I would be asked for a 45 minute speech and they would get me on half an hour late. Or I would have a particularly dense group and so had to slow way down and interact to get the point across.

So I learned to plan a skeleton that could go in half the time but that I could adapt and expand as needed. (this was much easier with the old overhead projector than a computer slide deck but it can be done with a slide deck although it takes practice.).

In this case, if you had 3 key points, you could have: 1. answered the first question and then asked to defer the others so you could keep to the time they allotted and then take those at the end. 2. shorten your elaboration of the key points.

Not easy — but next time plan for more flexibility.

That’s so hard though because I can imagine them watching in polite silence and then being weirded out that my presentation was only six minutes when they asked for ten. (I guess you could include an optional final activity slide or something, but …)

They didn’t ask for ten though, they asked for “no more than ten.”

…and the LW’s presentation was 8 1/2 minutes, comfortably under that limit. It sounds as though what they should have said was “plan a 4-5 minute presentation” because that’s really what the LW wound up getting.

Yup. And at least in my field, questions are typically not included in that but asked afterwards. Otherwise it would be very clearly stated “including discussion”. And even then questions are almost always asked at the end.

This would be very atypical and changing your presentations to be very short of the actually given time for future interviews would definitely be counterproductive.

The ability to adjust presentation length based on time available and questions is a great skill for public speakers to have, but IMO it’s much easier to have, say, the core of a 30 minute talk which you can add or subtract 10 minutes, than to be asked to present “no more than” 10 minutes and only actually get five.

IMO the LW did things right, planned for 8 1/2 minutes, allowing for a little time for questions etc. The interviewers were inconsiderate of the interviewer’s time in not merely asking questions but also discussing the topic among themselves.

If they are going to have such a hard stop on the presentation time, they need to give the candidate the presentation time. If one of the interviewers was a blowhard that loved to hear himself talk, you might not get more than an intro out and then they tap their watches letting you know to wrap things up.

If this is a role play to see how you handle difficult presentation issues (I’m not getting that sense from the letter) then they need to make it clear that they are role playing and not acting as regular interviewers.

Is where my brain went to as well. When I went to high school, back in the mesozoic era, english class actually taught how to give a presentation; but literally the only piece of advice from that I learnt and still retained is that I should never use all of the time given to me for a presentation, I should always have time set aside for questions.

Doing that for a very short presentation is difficult, but difficult does also mean a show of skill here, but it does show off multiple skills that help mark the difference between ‘ can present’ and ‘ expert at presenting’. It wasn’t until I was in my workplace proper that I got good at shuffling my mental notes on the fly as I was presenting to further summarise points and MAKE extra time as I needed, and even now I’d only consider myself comfortable as a presenter not an expert.

They did though! They were coming in comfortably under the limit every time. I wouldn’t expect the questions to be as long as the presentation itself!

I’m really wondering just *how* timed this presentation was. Was there an actual clock? Did they actually get cut off? I’ve certainly asked people to give a presentation of a certain length, but it’s a general guideline, not a presidential debate format. It may be that they got flustered keeping a very literal approach to the time limit, when the interview panel might have been fine with them “reclaiming” their time at the end. The way they wrote it makes it sound like there was an actual timer and a very hard end, but they don’t actually say that, so it’s something to consider.

Hi, OP here; no clock within my own eyeline, but I realised as I was exiting that there was one above the door which was likely what the panel leader was using.

OP presumably had or could’ve had a watch/phone, and if they were doing a Powerpoint there’d be a clock on the monitor.

I think, in an interview situation like this, I probably would have probably answered the first question and then said something like, “this could be a great conversation, but due to time constraints, let’s hold the rest of the questions until the end, some of this might answer your questions.”

Agreed. In fact, I’m guessing that this was part of the interview – ie. how does the candidate maintain control of the presentation? Do they let the audience go off into a conversation or get sidetracked on tangents? Can they get the presentation back on track after a question?

i have done a lot of timed presentations in interviews and i’ve never been stopped after a set amount of time if i was stopped to answer questions. maybe you took a lot of time to answer something they thought should have been a quick answer OP? i think i might expect a candidate to manage the questions by keeping an eye on the time and hustling things along if it looked like we were going over, but we wouldn’t stop someone’s presentation for that reason. seems a bit mean, but as alison says, maybe as you pushed for extra feedback? feedback can be weird – i missed out a job recently as my presentation wasn’t entrepreneurial enough. the topic was not something you could be enterpreneurial about without not really answering the question, so i have no idea what it meant!

I would hasard a guess that you didn’t use enough buzz words

“We screwed up and we find a way to blame you for a missed deliverable.”

Consider yourself lucky…if you’d gotten the job, you’d be posting here in 6 – 9 months with other situations where their failure to plan resulted in you being at fault for a missed deadline.

I’m not sure I’d jump to these conclusions based off of one interview.

Not really. Being able to adjust on the fly is a requirement in many roles. But especially if you are a lawyer. The court gives you X minutes to present, you have X minutes regardless of how many questions you get. So make your big point first. Then be really good at condensing the others.

I was just thinking this! In court you can have a rehearsed point by point argument. The judge can interrupt, ask questions, or tell you to just get on with it and you have to reshuffle on the fly.

Outside of court, too! I’m in-house/compliance and giving presentations to senior management is a huge part of my job. Most of them are pulled in so many different directions at once it can be like trying to present to a group of squirrels.

If they want to spend 10 minutes getting nitpicky about something, I have to roll with it, but if they start getting chatty I’ve gotten pretty good at redirecting. All it takes most of the time is a pause in conversation and then, “And speaking of the rain today, let’s get back to this flood of information I’m throwing at you” or whatever.

On the other hand, the first and primary reason why they were rejected was that the other candidate had more management experience. The issues with the presentation were only brought up when they asked for more feedback, it’s possible they could’ve had no issues with the presentation and they still would’ve been rejected. There’s nothing they mention that makes the company sound unreasonable, sometimes you only get 10 minutes and you lose half of your time to discussion.

The real solution to this would be to see if OP can get a stretch project or something that would increase their management experience.

This is my exact thought. They pulled this out as something concrete to work on but it really didn’t affect the outcome.

Yeah, it could easily have fallen into the realm of “not perfect but easily trainable” on the first pass, and not counted against them at all!

Yeah, it’s really hard to say. I’ve gotten weird feedback at work, tried to analyze it, and realized later on the person giving it wanted to have SOMETHING to work on and not just say “you’re doing a good job, keep it up.” If the presentation was OK, but ultimately not perfect and then someone else did just as well and had more experience, then it’s not necessarily the presentation that did it.

I really don’t think there’s any reason to conclude that here.

I’m curious what you read that makes you think that?

I work such a role where I’m expected to present with limited time (because it’s only one function of the project team) as part of my job. I’ve done 10 minute presentations for interviews before, and I don’t think that a “this is a roleplay” warning is common or can be expected. However, I would expect that in the interview invite they either mention there will be questions after my 10 minutes or to factor questions into my presentation planning. So on that front the interviewee wasn’t prepared properly. But since I’m expected to diplomatically stand my ground against senior leaders and clients in the job, I wouldn’t find it unreasonable for interviewers to test if I can redirect during an interview.

That said though… I’m leaning towards this being a case of: they decided on another candidate either way, and were just grasping for other things they didn’t like. The unfinished/rushed end of the presentation stuck in their memories, but not the why. Not malicious, just mildly infuriating.

I agree. If the interview test is how well a speaker handles interruptions, then the instruction should have been “10 minutes for presentation and Q&A.” As described by the OP, it sounded like the instruction was 10 minutes’ worth of presentation, so was the test actually “will you interrupt the interruptions in order to keep to your schedule?” In many presentations the speaker is asked whether they prefer to take questions during or hold until after, so the speaker has some amount of control over interruptions. Would OP have gotten or lost points for saying “Good question, I’ll address that at the end” and pressing on?

As it is, it doesn’t sound like it was clear the 10 minutes was still ticking away until time was almost up. I could see not feeling like I could or should interrupt if the panel is actively discussing my presentation, even if it’s eating into my time. I would take the feedback with a grain of salt – you didn’t know the rules they were playing by.

Hi, OP here. Yes, at the time of the interruption I had no idea the clock was still running and I get the sense that shutting down a very positive discussion about the implications of my concept would have been a Bad Idea. In hindsight maybe I should have challenged at the point I was back into the swing of the pres and actually warned I was running out of time? But I’m really not sure how I could have addressed that without sounding very petty.

I would always assume ten minutes is it. And then adjust if I were interrupted. Because you can add on if you do end up getting time to make up for the interruptions.

This is one of the skills teaching gives you. I’ve had carefully laid out lesson plans —45 minutes to step students through to a goal. And then they get to the goal in 7 minutes lol. Or — step one of five takes 35 minutes. Or the students get waaaay off — and then you have to find a way to guide them back (or even follow them!). And these same situations happen at work.

This is a genuine question: But why would you think the clock was not running? If I have a presentation to give at a 60-minute meeting, I don’t expect to get more than 60 minutes to present if people ask me questions.

I always go with something like “This is such a great discussion! I want to make sure I respect your time, so allow me to wrap up these last two slides” or “Thanks so much for the questions – I have a little more towards the end that I think will address those points” or something.

Because they told OP that her presentation was supposed to last for 10 minutes, then they wasted half of it bloviating amongst themselves. Did they not think that ten minutes means ten minutes?

I’m really kind of baffled by how much people are making excuses for these interviewers. This sounds like a terrible, frustrating setup!

Totally agreed! I really feel for the OP, and I would be so frustrated in this position.

I have made technical presentations for interviews that are designed to be 30 minutes with 10 minutes of Q&A. But Q&A will happen anytime during the presentation. If I sense someone was watching the clock and conversations are “going on and on”, I will make a joke, “This is very interesting but I hope someone has stopped the chess timer?” This usually brings the audience to realized this is an interview but it also puts a gentle notice on the time constraints without saying time constraints.

I am fortunate that most R&D types are used to presentations going long because of interesting conversations. On the flip side, I dreaded making to the end of my presentation and there are no questions during it. That means no one in the audience was sufficiently interested in my presentation to overcome the inertia of silence to ask a question. (Which usually means low chance of an offer.)

Good luck on your future presentations

It really varies, and knowing your audience and what the appropriate response is is key. It’s not necessarily like scientific talks. Sometimes asking to hold questions to the end is appropriate. Sometimes the right thing is to do a time check, and say something like “This is a great discussion, but we only have 15 minutes left, would you rather we move on and come back to this later or schedule a follow-up for what we don’t get to today?”

It’s possible that this was an intentional test, but I think it’s probably just sloppiness on their part.

Generally speaking, when a presentation is time-limited, everyone knows to hold questions for the end. That’s pretty standard business culture. What good is setting a time frame if people are allowed to take time away from that at will?

Leeway to shut down questions or redirect group members varies a lot based on company culture, and in a lot of scenarios it’s just not possible for an interviewee to know how to handle that. Unless presenting to a variety of groups is specifically part of the job, I don’t see how they could have expected the LW to know what they wanted here.

Ultimately, these people probably just aren’t great interviewers. The LW should try to let this go and not take it to heart.

This is my take too. When asking the presenter to present on a topic for 10 minutes, there is a reasonable expectation that an interviewee should use most of that 10 minutes to display their presentation capabilities and expertise. Ending at the 5 minute mark to allow for 5 minutes of discussion would likely have been a point against LW for not taking advantage of the full use of their time, especially had there been no questions. The interviewers should have baked in an extra 5-10 minutes to allow for discussion questions. In a real world context, the presenter would have an idea of how much total time they have with their audience and what control they have to field questions.

I agree with this completely. Without a fuller understanding of who is in the room and what deference should be given to those in the room, it is absolutely impossible to tactfully shut down conversation that spirals from a question. If LW had been hired and was supposed to give a 1o minute presentation, they’d have more standing to redirect the conversation. The interview panel taking 30-40% of the allotted time is rude. Maybe the fact that LW had to speed through the final minute didn’t really impact the decision but it sure sucks that the panel wasn’t willing to be kind and respectful.

Maybe, or maybe the culture at this workplace is that you should be prepared to ad lib. Or maybe the job involves making pitches to skeptical audiences. If so, it is totally fair to assess a candidate on their ability to get knocked off script and still make a good presentation.

It would probably be best to give people a heads up that will be the format, but again, maybe you are looking for someone who can think on their feet without forewarning. It’s not an unreasonable trait.

This is why you organize around 2 or 3 key ideas and then expand and contract as needed.

Eh – yes and no. I am used to presenting in the circumstances you describe, where I am mostly in control of what is happening, but that’s not the only way to present (and you still need a plan B / be able to skip ahead etc).

I would hope that they ask for a presentation in the interview because this is a large and complex part of the job, so it’s not just a question on whether or not a person can talk for 10 minutes.

Hi, OP here. The culture of this org is that if you’re given 10 minutes, you fill it. I already felt I was pushing my luck only running to 8m30s, but was comfortable it made sense within the context of the presentation. The written call to interview heavily implied that there would be questions afterwards, so if anything I was assuming that the mid-presentation chatter would be eating into that. I didn’t feel I had standing to be telling my interviewers to stop talking, particularly when neither presentation nor audience management would be features of the role I was interviewing for. I think I’m just going to chalk this up to being ‘one of those things’.

If that’s the context, then yeah, I think it was sloppy interviewing and you should carry on with your life.

Strongly disagree – everywhere I’ve worked and with partner teams, the culture is actually to ask questions throughout unless otherwise asked. It’s very common for people to get halfway or two-thirds through their deck and not finish or scramble through the end.

I mean, really, most presentations are time-limited – no one has unlimited time to get through a deck. But sometimes the questions and the discussion are more important than the deck.

I think that is the cases for most informal, internal meetings. Questions get asked, and then a follow-up is scheduled if you run out of time.

But for formal presentations where time is specifically limited to a short timespan like 10 minutes, it generally is different. A reasonable company wouldn’t tell you to prepare for 10 minutes, eat away half of that, and then fault you for running out of time.

to be honest, that is probably industry dependent. i work in an agency and the expectation is that people will ask questions as we go along. it’s fine to deflect and say you’ve got a slide coming up to answer that question but they might have expected OP to move things along or ask if they had a hard stop after 10 mins or similar?

I don’t know, in my roles I’ve had to do presentations a number of times with lots of interruptions. if I was asked to present no longer than 10 minutes, I probably would’ve gone for seven anticipating there might be questions or comments during. It’s probably funky they didn’t make this explicit beforehand, but I’ve never had a job presentation that wasn’t interrupted by at least one question.

That so interesting. I have had to do a presentation in quite a few interviews. It is pretty standard for a second interview in my industry. The only times I was ever interrupted were when I was specifically told ahead of time that they panel would be role-playing and they wanted to see how I would handle interruptions. I think every other presentation there was specific time built in for questions after the presentation, so all the panelists just waited until the end.

I guess it comes down to an industry/ culture thing.

Even with your 7 minute presentation, you’d still be pushing up against the time limit since OP says they spent a solid 3-4 minutes with mid-presentation questions and “broader chat among the panel members”. Also, to me, it feels quite strange to hold an interview presentation to exactly 10 minutes, even to the extent of providing a one minute warning so OP rushes through the end. Particularly when you’re allowing interruptions and digressions mid-presentation; typically if you’re going to hold *that* firm to the schedule, it’ll be expected (and announced) for people to hold questions till the end.

I have to wonder if it was really 3-4 minutes or if it just felt like that long to the LW, because 3-4 minutes would be a LONG time to let the panel members have a “broader chat” amongst themselves while she sat idly by and I can see why they would’ve expected her to reign it in

OP can clarify this, but if she rehearsed her speech enough times it’s very likely that she had a good idea of how long she’d been speaking when the interruption happened. She was also told when her time was almost up. It would be pretty simple subtraction from that point.

Toastmasters does have in one of the advanced levels in Presentation Mastery an option for practicing being interrupted while giving a speech. It’s actually one of the trickier projects. But you’d have to be part of a Toastmasters club in order to do that. I would suggest, if you want to get more presentation practice, that might be a good route to do so.

I think your rejection has more to with lacking management experience. Sometimes people throw out something else that didn’t matter as much to give something more concrete.

This is where I land as well. It’s possible that the interviewer didn’t even recall other interviewers asking questions and interrupting, and upon checking their notes just found something like “last minute of presentation seemed rushed”.

Yeah, I could buy this, when I’m panel leader I try to find something meaningful to give each candidate as feedback but sometimes there’s nothing at all to fault the candidate on except their luck that there was another candidate with more experience on the day.

That’s exactly it. Most employers don’t usually bother giving feedback at all. Thank you for being one who does.

When I present professionally in meetings (which I do a lot), I always leave space to go longer or shorter with each topic depending on how much discussion and engagement I get. There’s definitely a skill to that as there is a skill in gently moving things along in the internet of time.

I’m not sure I’d cut short questions in an interview situation, but there’s no harm in calling out what’s happening “wow, you all have a lot to great questions. If I continue answering them, there might not be time to complete all of my presentation in the allotted time. That’s fine with me . Is that the route you’d like to take?”

So yes there is a lot of skill assessment that you can glean from this, whether the interruptions were intentional or not. That said, I doubt it’ was a deciding factor in not getting the position.

This is the ideal way to handle it. Someone very comfortable with presentations in a context where they get a lot of discussion will be able to call out the time issue in an appropriate way.

Someone very comfortable presenting in these situations is also likely capable at summarizing the key points from the last few slides in the allotted time even though it takes them off script and isn’t what they practiced.

These are skills that come with practice, mastery of the material being presented, and confidence in one’s role as the presenter as it relates to those in the audience, and seeing the presenter role as also that of a facilitator. Not easy in an interview setting, so I don’t at all fault OP for not handling it perfectly and being annoyed about how it all transpired.

totally, in a recent interview i decided to hide a couple of slides to make sure i could cover the topic within the time available. when it became clear that they were interested in those, i could unhide and present them (they did ask and i did present them but i didn’t get dinged for time)

When I interviewed for my current role as an instructor, I was told to prepare a 5-10 minute lesson plan that I would deliver to the panel as if they were my students. During my presentation, the 3 panel members acted purposely acted obnoxiously (think interrupting me, making fun of one the other “students”, rolling their eyes, scrolling on their phones, etc.) to see how I handled it and if I could keep the presentation on track. I was not told ahead of time they would do this, so naturally I was a little confused what was happening. When I was offered the position, I was told that the way I handled their heckling was what got me the role, and that they did this because some of our learners can be quite disruptive. It made sense for the duties of my role, but I’m not sure if that’s the case for you, OP.

A line that I have used on many occasions: “I have some slides coming up that may answer your question and/or fill in some background or details. I’d like to get to those before I answer.”

This happens to me a lot.

Ugh, public defenders do this kind of hazing interview, too. (In ADDITION to actual role play with difficult “clients”/“judges”/“prosecutors.”) Definitely not my favorite part of PD culture, which otherwise tends to be pretty great (for law).

I also hate adversarial interviews. While it’s important for anyone to think on their feet, I’d rather ask, “Have you ever been blindsided by a colleague/manager/client and how did you handle it?”

Honestly, this sounds like nearly every presentation I’ve ever had to make at my current company! I’ll have a full deck of slides prepared, and people will get so hung up on something in one of the first few slides that 80% of the meeting time ends up getting eaten up on 20% of the content. I’ve learned to just make my slide decks shorter, and also to greatly front load the information so that when we inevitably get hung up on the first slide, we’re not missing out on anything too important later on.

I realize this doesn’t help what happened in your interview, but maybe it’s worth knowing that this kind of thing can still happen even after you have the job, and it’s possible to learn to roll with it.

Yeah, putting the “executive summary” or conclusions first is key. I also will put a lot of slides in an appendix – if a particular audience wants to go deep in a particular area we can, but otherwise they’re skipped.

This is unfortunately something I had to learn in grad school, where one slide of preliminary data would be discussed for half an hour. It was noted that my lab meeting presentations were “terrible,” because, well, I had planned to present data, not discuss one slide for 1/4 of the time of meeting. It usually resulted in weak transitions between slides and rushed conclusions, and I probably looked like a worse presenter than I was. TBH, it also might be a mismatch in culture between OP and the company; where OP is like me and prefers “one shotting” and answering questions at the end, and the company prefers an ongoing discussion rather than a straight presentation. Nothing inherently wrong with either approach, but it does get frustrating. (For the record, I was chewed out by my advisor, in the middle of an update, for asking that questions be held until the end; again, culture mismatch, nothing “right” or “wrong” about either, just frustrating)

It seems like there’s a good (actual) reason you didn’t get the role, but I’m really stuck on how this interview was handled. Maybe there was some role play going on, but it seems more likely that the conversation spiraled from the one question that was asked. I think it sets someone up for failure to derail a presentation they’ve been asked to prepare for an interview. If it was a panel interview, sans presentation, it isn’t likely that anyone would be subjected to an panel taking 30-40% of the interview time in a side conversation. And if they were, and the allotted time was clipped because of that, I’d consider that at least a yellow flag about that workplace.

Derails like OP is describing are ubiquitous in science and technical presentations. So my money is on that.

Could be for sure. In an interview setting, I’d think it would be kind and helpful, though, for someone from the panel to give some direction to the candidate about how to proceed through / following this kind of interruption. We’ve asked the candidate to prepare 10 minutes of content. We took 3-4 minutes. We owe them either the full opportunity to finish or at least a moment to collect their thoughts to get through key points in the remaining part of the presentation. The power dynamic in an interview is very different than in a workplace setting, and lots of people would fumble in that situation.

It’s just that they may be assessing how the fumbling is done. Presenting to a set of high-level managers is not necessarily less stressful than to an interview panel, and there will not be instructions there either.

3-4 minutes of questions in the middle of the talk is a good thing – it means your talk is relevant and your audience is engaged. I wouldn’t take it as a negative. The other candidate had more management experience and they felt like they had to say something to you.

Here’s what I do when the power differential prohibits me from cutting off questions. Wait for it to run its course and say something like “Clearly there’s a lot of interest in this topic. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough time to cover the rest of the presentation. I’m happy to stick around and answer questions or talk about anything I couldn’t cover today after the meeting/interview/whatever.” The key is to say it like this is a positive development. Of course you’re happy people are so interested in your presentation!

LW you did not get the job because “another candidate had more management experience than [you].” Accept that and move on.

Until you went probing, they did not mention your presentation was a factor. You’re grasping a straws (an applicants tend to do), but there’s really nothing for you to fix here. Just move on and think of this no more.

Hi, OP here: I agree! I’m not too hung up on it as there were clearly other factors involved in the final decision. Though if anyone has a polite way to address this were it to crop up again it would satisfy the completer-finisher in me haha

I would just look for ways to, as gracefully as possible, wrap up quickly when you need to.

I’ve seen this happen in interviews before – not because their was any plan on the interviewers part, but just because they were engaged with the presentation. It’s hard not to be flustered as the presenter, so making a plan for how to cut things short if needed can be helpful.

Retired now but worked in research basic science. Lab heads were the worst for interrupting, then going down a rabbit hole side discussion. It was very hard for any speaker to regain control, especially job candidates.

When I’ve had to do these, or been on the receiving end as a member of the hiring team, it’s usually not about whether you finished the whole prez, but how well you did during the time allotted, which might include questions, challenges, etc.

YMMV of course but that’s how it usually goes in my experience

I interviewed for a company where they played “good cop/ bad cop” during the presentation portion to fluster the interviewee. I only found out after getting the job and sitting on another interview where they told me that is their strategy. It was one of many, many burning red flags of that job.

I had an interview like that, a 3 person panel where one person was the designated jerk. They also used a standardized set of questions, which is not a bad idea if they are well tailored. The funny thing was the designated jerk did not have to try very hard to fulfil that role, we butted heads a few times before he warmed up to me. (Yes, I accepted the offer, the place I was working at before was worse, and that had conditioned me to be tolerant of jerks and toxicity. Happily not at a toxic place now at the twilight of my career!)

I was interviewing for a very competitive graduate program that had a group presentation element. We got a prompt as a small group, then had to pitch an idea from that prompt. We only had about 5-10 minutes to prepare and our pitch had to be under 5 minutes. My mom (not affiliated at all with the program or field of study) had warned me the interview process might involve something like this and I would be judged not on my content, so much as my conduct.

I’m glad she gave me the warning because the way we divided up our pitch, I was supposed to speak last, detailing the final elements of the pitch. Then during the pitch the person who spoke ahead of me said what I was going to say. I had to pivot immediately and instead of delivering the final elements, I summarized everyone else’s talking points and put a button on the presentation. I got a spot in the program, the person who “stole” my talking points did not.

I say this only to echo what Alison did: you may have been being judged on your abilities as a presenter, not on what you presented. It might not be fair, but I’d keep it in mind on your next interview.

Hi, OP here! Thank you Alison and everyone else for your input, it’s been helpful and run the length of my own thought process as I’ve been reflecting upon this.

To answer a point that has been raised several times, no, I don’t think this was a planned interruption to see how I dealt with it under pressure. Not only does the role not require presentation very frequently, but on the rare occasions it might be necessary, the listeners would be very unlikely to interrupt (sorry, can’t go further without doxing myself). I think the panel had just picked that format because it was a quick way to get the candidate’s takes on the challenge they’d set for the interview. Furthermore, I know one of the other candidates and they weren’t interrupted at all. I’m taking it as a positive that the panel were excited enough about my ideas that they started chatting about implementation, feasibility, outcome figures etc during my pres!

In theory I’d agree that politely but firmly redirecting questions until the end would have been a good idea, but the broader implication of the original interview invitation was that there would be questions /after/ the presentation, so in the moment it didn’t even occur to me to be an issue. In fact I was thrilled that they were so interested in my ideas! I certainly didn’t feel I had standing to argue my case at the point I was back into the swing of my presentation and suddenly given a one minute warning. But we are where we are.

I’m increasingly coming to the conclusion that I need to just chalk this up to human error; it simply didn’t occur to the panel leader to pause the clock whilst they were chatting. A yellow flag maybe that they weren’t too considerate of their own impact on others, but given it wasn’t the deciding factor in the end, I’m trying not to read anything further into it.

My takeaway is that if I (non-specific deity forbid) ever have to do a timed presentation for a job interview, I will ask specifically how much time, how much time for questions, and what is their preferred protocol for interruptions.

It sounds like the questions were more of engagement than clarifying, especially since LW mentioned “broader chat.” I could be wrong on that, but I wouldn’t assume these questions were rooted in confusion.

I have done a lot of interviewing and for some of the roles I have purposely interrupted them to see how well they are able to recover and get back on track. It was never time limited like this person’s was, so I can’t attest to that part, but it is absolutely a thing where this might need to be tested. In our line of work some of the positions do present a lot, and often to VERY high level people (think prime ministers, other cabinet level people) who LOVE to hear themself talk and will often interrupt because we can’t possibly live without their insights (sarcasm, obviously), and part of the success of the position is getting the presentation/conversation back on course after those interruptions.

OP, you didn’t do anything wrong, you tried your best to deal with unreasonable people. You did the prep work and obviously weren’t planning to coast through this interview.

You’ll drive yourself crazy trying to figure out what they wanted — they don’t know either. If they truly wanted to test your time-management skills they would have done so in a reasonable manner and told you about it beforehand. That’s why when normal people organize presentations in the real world — not the weird model UN interview world — they build time for Qs into the agenda. Why that other candidate got the job is anyone’s guess (including the fact that they could have had some other “in”).

Interviewers trying to sabotage their candidates is icky and weird. See that shiny bright red flag for what it is, keep practicing your presentation skills, and forget about it.

I had something sort of similar recently. It was a timed 60 minute Zoom interview, and I know for legal reasons that they are have to keep the interview process as fair as possible due to the possibility of people filing grievances if they are given different opportunities.

However, mid-interview one of the panel had technical difficulties which resulted in them having to repeat a lengthy question multiple times, eating up several minutes. Then at the very end of the interview I was told “you have 90 seconds left do you have any questions for us?” It seemed absurd that it would be SO rigid and also that I wouldn’t “get back” the time that the panel used due to their own issues.

I did get offered the job in the end but I felt the bum’s rush to get all the questions answered. It was weird!

On my team we do a required 15 minute presentation in the interview. Presenting to students, peers, and executives inside and outside the company is a core part of my job.

While we try to keep questions for the end sometimes we’ll interrupt if we can’t follow the presentation or there’s a particularly egregious error or issue we want to address in the moment. For senior positions we’d expect folks to be able to handle interruptions gracefully. I’d be fine with someone asking if we had more time since they took some time to answer questions. I’d also be fine with them acknowledging that we lost some time and skipping a few slides as a result. I’m also almost always okay with “that’s a great question, but I’d like to save it for the end if that’s okay with you.”

As someone who’s done a lot of presenting, there’s techniques you can learn to manage situations like this. If your chosen career path is going to involve a lot of presenting especially to hostile or indifferent audiences you might want to practice some of them. A couple I use include marking slides that can be skipped in my speaker notes and practicing my talk with and without them. Adding extra slides after my thank you slide if I go under time. Practicing presenting a short and longer version of key slides so I can adjust on the fly. I also front load critical information so I don’t end up low on time with a bunch of content I HAVE to cover for the talk to make sense.

Stuff happens during talks. I’ve had fire alarms and coughing fits. Tech issues (not my fault). Co-speakers that showed up late. Audiences that showed up late. A question from the audience that was not actually a question and took 30 seconds to a minute. It happens to everyone so having the ability to flex a bit is useful.

President Joe Biden will address the nation from the White House Wednesday night, his first national address since his announcement Sunday that he will not be running for reelection.

Biden officially dropped out of contention for the Democratic nomination over the weekend and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor, who has quickly  secured enough Democratic National Committee delegates  to become the presumptive Democratic nominee.

The president had been isolating at his vacation home in Delaware this week after a positive COVID-19 test , and has since tested negative for the virus.

Biden has said he will stay in office to finish the remainder of his term through the 2024 election.

Biden's address is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET, and he will speak to the nation from the Oval Office in the White House.

In a post on X , Biden said the address will share "what lies ahead, and how I will finish the job for the American people."

Biden's family starts discussing his possible exit plan from the 2024 race

WASHINGTON — Members of President Joe Biden’s family have discussed what an exit from his campaign might look like, according to two people familiar with the discussions. 

The overall tone of the conversations has been that any exit plan — should Biden decide to take that step, as some of his closest allies increasingly believe he will — should put the party in the best position to beat former President Donald Trump while also being worthy of the more than five decades he has served the country in elected office, these people said. 

Biden’s family members have specifically discussed how he would want to end his re-election bid on his own timing and with a carefully calculated plan in place. Considerations about the impact of the campaign on his health, his family and the stability of the country are among those at the forefront of the discussions, the people familiar with those discussions said.

The prospect of Biden’s considering stepping aside, much less that his family is gaming out a possible exit plan, is an extraordinary development that comes after he has repeatedly said he would not relinquish his position as the presumptive nominee of the party. 

But concerns have mounted among party leaders, donors and even officials who are part of his re-election effort with every day that has passed since a devastating debate three weeks ago. At the same time, Democrats are watching Republicans rally around Trump, who just survived an assassination attempt and accepted his party’s nomination Thursday night.

White House spokesman Andrew Bates denied that any such exit discussions are happening among the family.

"That is not happening, period," he said. "The individuals making those claims are not speaking for his family or his team — and they will be proven wrong. Keep the faith."

On MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Friday, Biden campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon acknowledged that the campaign has seen some "slippage," but she said it's been "a small movement" and insisted Biden is "absolutely" still in the race.

Ron Klain, Biden’s former White House chief of staff and an adviser to him for decades, said in an interview that Biden is hearing the public and private calls for him to exit the race.

“I think he’s feeling the pressure,” said Klain, who has spoken to Biden recently. “I want him to stay in.”

Klain’s take is that it makes no sense for Biden to be pushed aside. He said some in his party underestimate Trump at their own peril and undervalue the fact that Biden is the only one who has beaten him.

Biden and the people closest to him have felt burned by efforts to push him out that they see as backhanded and disrespectful . The family is distraught and moving through the stages of anger and grief over how people they perceived to be friends have treated the president.

“There was a much more dignified way to do this if this is what they wanted,” a Biden ally said. “This is no way to treat a public servant who has done a lot for this country.”

Discussions about how to game out a fitting plan for Biden to step aside have also played out among senior staff members, not just the president’s family, according to a person close to the re-election effort. Bates also denied these discussions are happening.

The family members Biden has relied on most include first lady Jill Biden, his son Hunter and his sister, Valerie Owens, as well as a few longtime close aides who have been at the core of the discussions.

The conversations about Biden’s political future have raged while he remains at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, sidelined after he tested positive for Covid on Wednesday. 

On Thursday, some of Biden’s closest aides were calling trusted allies to get a sense of where they thought his political standing is, according to a person familiar with the phone calls. 

A Democratic lawmaker described Biden in this moment as “reflective." A third person close to Biden described the president as politically “fighting for his life.”

There are growing expectations among some allies that if Biden were to exit, it could be in the coming days. But they also caution that it still is up to him to make the decision and that he is not wired to quit even when he faces seemingly insurmountable adversity. 

About the possibility any announcement is imminent, a person close to the Bidens said, “We don’t even know what we’re doing tomorrow.”  

Still, Biden is not insusceptible to the mounting pressure from his own party, and he has said himself since the debate that he may consider leaving the race if there were no path for him to win. 

“I think it’s inevitable,” a second person close to the re-election effort said of Biden’s withdrawing from the race. 

As reports surfaced, including from NBC News , that Biden had shown signs that he could budge from his insistence that he remain the nominee, rumors and reports — some that the president's allies flatly denied — began to fly. They included speculation about timing of a potential exit, whether Biden would immediately endorse Vice President Kamala Harris and who was on the shortlist to be her vice presidential running mate.  

Among the reports: that longtime speechwriter and historian Jon Meacham was writing Biden’s exit remarks. 

Meacham rebuffed the account. 

“The report is totally false,” he said. 

Amid the turmoil the Biden campaign sent out talking points to Democrats, according to a Democratic strategist: “President Biden has not spoken to congressional leadership today. The president is his party’s nominee, having won 14 million votes during the Democratic primary. He’s running for re-election, and that will not change until he wins re-election.”

As many in his own party turned against him, Biden continued this week to check in with allies and gauge their sentiments. 

“With all the rumors that I’m leaving, I’m not,” Biden told the Rev. Al Sharpton, the civil rights leader and MSNBC host, in a phone call Monday, Sharpton said.

“I will support whatever you decide,” Sharpton said he told the president.

Sharpton said in an interview Thursday that legacy is something Biden “has to think of” as he contemplates his political future. “If there’s anyone that could make a comeback … it’s Joe Biden. Whether he chooses to or not, I don’t know.”

Some in Biden’s camp had hoped he would be able to weather the storm of pressure for him to step aside — that news events, including the Republican National Convention, would turn the national conversation away from whether and when he might end his campaign. But even the attempted assassination of Trump on Saturday did little to quell the furor around Biden. If anything, Democrats have since turned up the heat.

A major factor driving the private pressure on Biden is the fear among Democrats that his candidacy could rob them not only of the White House and the Senate but also of a chance to flip the House to their control. That helps explain why senior lawmakers have pushed on Biden to reconsider his decision to stay in the race.

“The House is on the brink,” said Brian Wolff, the treasurer of the House Majority PAC, the main super PAC supporting House Democratic candidates. “These candidates don’t deserve that.”

Wolff said Democratic incumbents and challengers in tough races cannot risk splintering their own voter coalitions by publicly taking one side or the other as Biden considers his options.

“They can’t afford to alienate the base that wants to support Biden or the base that wants someone else,” he said.
