Amazon to Provide Computer Science Education for More Than 550,000 K-12 Students Annually Across More Than 5,000 Schools Nationwide Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Amazon more than doubling reach of its childhood-to-career computer science education program –  Amazon Future Engineer  – extending program to over 3,000 more schools

Nearly all Amazon Future Engineer schools include a significant percentage of students from groups currently underrepresented in computer science, including Black, LatinX, and Indigenous students

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep. 15, 2020-- Today,  Amazon announced  it is expanding its computer science education program,  Amazon Future Engineer , to more than 5,000 schools, benefitting over 550,000 students in need each year. The expansion more than doubles Amazon Future Engineer’s reach, adding more than 3,000 new schools across the U.S. Nearly all Amazon Future Engineer schools serve a student body with a significant percentage of students from groups currently underrepresented in computer science and tech, hundreds of schools are rural, and more than 80% are Title I schools. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon Future Engineer coursework can be done virtually to help ensure students stay on track and continue to prepare for the jobs of the future.

“The start of this new school year is unlike any before, with students, parents, and teachers adjusting to remote learning,” said Jeff Wilke, CEO Worldwide Consumer, Amazon. “This is a challenge for all students, but particularly those from underserved and underrepresented communities. We are hopeful that our Amazon Future Engineer coursework, which adapts easily to a virtual setting, will continue to equip these hard-working students with the skills they’ll need—and that society will need—for a bright future.”

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that from 2014 to 2024, the market for computer science professionals will grow twice as fast as the rest of the labor market and, in 2019, the median annual salary for computer science occupations was approximately $48,000 greater than the median wage for all occupations in the U.S. What’s more, while the number of Black students obtaining STEM degrees has increased over the last two decades, Black professionals remain underrepresented within American science and engineering enterprises. The National Science Board (NSB) estimates that the number of Black professionals in science and engineering must more than double to be representative of Black people in the U.S. population in 2030.

Amazon’s funding will support more than 1,000 elementary schools and more than 4,000 middle and high schools with high-quality computer science courses, online support, and teacher professional development. Amazon Future Engineer’s expansion to elementary schools helps bridge equity skill gaps at a critical age, when students are just beginning to formulate ideas about their futures.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Amazon employees are volunteering virtually in Amazon Future Engineer classrooms, talking to the students about the importance of their own computer science education. Amazon Future Engineer also launched the  Amazon Cyber Robotics Challenge  – a free, virtual, first of its kind coding competition that teaches students the basics of computer science in the context of a real-life industry challenge. Teachers from Title I schools who complete this competition will also be eligible for free, expanded virtual robotics lessons to further support their students while they learn from home.

In addition to supporting computer science education, Amazon is supporting communities in a range of ways during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has donated more than 13,000 laptops to students in need, distributed more than $5 million worth of Amazon devices to help healthcare workers and nonprofits, delivered more than 6 million meals across 25 U.S. cities, launched free, virtual computer science resources for thousands of students, donated more than $20 million to help accelerate COVID-19 research, donated $10 million in critically needed PPE supplies, and more. Amazon is ramping up its free college program for employees through the addition of 140 more ... [+] colleges and universities as partners.

Amazon, the nation’s second largest retailer behind only Walmart, announced on Thursday that it was adding more than 140 colleges and universities through which it would offer free college tuition to its approximately 750,000 employees.

The expansion is part of the company’s Career Choice program , by which Amazon offers fully funded college tuition to employees, who can become eligible for the benefit after only 90 days of employment. Through Career Choice, Amazon’s employees can pursue a Bachelor’s degree, earn industry certifications, take English language proficiency courses, and enroll in high school completion programs all free of charge.

“We’re committed to empowering our employees with easy access to the education and training they need to grow their careers, whether that’s with us or elsewhere,” said Alicia Boler Davis, Senior Vice President of Global Customer Fulfillment, in the company’s press release. “We’re thrilled today to be adding more education partners to our Career Choice program, which we hope will give our team access to the educational paths that fit their passions.”

The company has estimated that the tuition benefit along with other new upskilling and training it will offer will require a total investment of $1.2 billion by 2025. Amazon’s education initiative positions it to compete with other major employers such as Target and Walmart who have also extended similar offers to their U. S. employees as national companies continue to sweeten the compensation pot to lure and retain workers during the tight labor market.

Among the new educational partners announced Thursday were national universities specializing in online education such as Southern New Hampshire University, Colorado State University Global, Western Governors University, and National University.

Dozens of other community colleges, regional universities, and research universities are also on the list, which can be found here . With the additional schools announced on Thursday , Amazon’s Career Choice program now has more than 180 education providers in its U.S. network.

In addition to the college tuition perk, Amazon will also work with GEDWork s and Smart Horizons to provide employees with free high school completion and GED preparation. It will offer English language training through partnerships with Voxy EnGen and goFLUENT , and it will provide college preparation courses through Outlier . All those offerings will also be free for eligible employees.

Employees will be able to take classes online, in-person at local institutions, or on-site in one of the company’s classrooms located at fulfillment centers in 37 states. According to Amazon, since Career Choice began in 2012, it has provided additional education for more than 50,000 employees.

Amazon has previously indicated that it plans to pay employees’ tuition and fees in advance rather than offering reimbursement after coursework completion, thereby permitting workers who don’t have sufficient funds on hand to begin immediately accessing the education options they want to pursue.

Higher education officials applauded the announcement. “The expansion of Amazon’s Career Choice program and the partnerships being forged with a wide range of colleges and universities is great news for nontraditional learners seeking new paths to career success,” said Ted Mitchell, president of the American Council on Education .
