Entrepreneurial Leadership in Education offers a unique opportunity for school and other educational organization leaders in both public and private educational environments. Students develop their knowledge, skills, and dispositions as they engage in leading efforts to build new venture opportunities in varied educational organizations. Through multidisciplinary lenses, educational leaders promote innovation in the paradigms, strategies, values and culture in school systems, social entrepreneurial ventures, and education companies. Each of the courses offers an opportunity to explore leadership theoretical frameworks, identify a Problem of Practice, and create a plan of action, through analysis and synthesis of presentations, readings, and discussion of the current state of multiple educational environments and the visions and challenges for the future.

This area of interest builds upon basic and applied research from the fields of cognitive science, psychology and brain sciences, neurology, neuroscience, and education. It provides educators with knowledge of how emerging research in the learning sciences can inform teaching and learning. The goal of the GSE PhD in Education is to prepare the next generation of leading education researchers. The cornerstone of the doctoral experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Education is the research apprenticeship that all students undertake, typically under the guidance of their academic advisor, but often with other Stanford faculty as well.

In this apprenticeship model, doctoral students are provided with a multi-year funding package that consists of opportunities each quarter to serve as teaching and research assistants for faculty members' courses and research projects. By this means, and in combination with the courses they take as part of their program, students are prepared over an approximately five-year period to excel as university teachers and education researchers.

The doctoral degree in Education at the GSE includes doctoral program requirements as well as a specialization, as listed below, overseen by a faculty committee from one of the GSE's three academic areas.

The median annual salary for EdD degree holders is around $80,000 in June 2022, according to Payscale. Salaries for EdD professionals can vary significantly by role. For example, Payscale reports the median annual salary of associate professors working in postsecondary/higher education is around $71,000, while EdD professionals serving in an executive director role have a median salary of around $104,000 per year.

Growth Outlook for EdD vs. PhD

The bright career outlook for degree holders is another reason to get an EdD or PhD. Advanced leadership roles for education professionals generally have a positive growth outlook. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of jobs for postsecondary teachers will grow by 12 percent between 2020 and 2030, which is much faster than the average 8 percent growth the BLS projects for all professions. The BLS estimates that over the same period, postsecondary education administrator positions will grow by 8 percent, which is on par with the national job growth average projected by the BLS.

EdDs and PhDs are valuable to professionals seeking to become leaders in education. Both require significant commitments—a doctoral-level degree can take three years or more to complete. While there’s overlap between the coursework and career options for EdD and PhD programs, a review of the differences can help determine a good fit for prospective students.

The curricula for the degrees themselves prepare students for different career paths after they graduate. There are generally more options and specialties for PhD programs than there are for EdD programs. The PhD in Education is ideal for students who are excited by a career in research. Concentrations vary by university. For example, some concentrations may include educational leadership in K–12 schools, educational psychology or higher education. Expect universities located in or near cities to offer concentrations exploring urban education settings as well.

7. Consider PhD and EdD online programs

If you’re a working professional and don’t want to commute to a physical campus while you earn a degree, an online doctor of education program may be right for you. Online programs cover the same information as their in-person counterparts, but offer a little more flexibility for students.

8. Research PhD vs. EdD dissertation requirements

By contrast, some EdD programs require you to complete a dissertation in practice. The Ph.D. in Education equips students to systematically examine the theoretical and practical challenges evident across the P-20 educational pipeline to address the issue of inequity. The degree program will prepare individuals for careers in academia, research, and policy centers, as well as for high-level administration and curricular positions at educational institutions and agencies.

The educational objectives for the PhD in Education are the following:

  • To advance research on inequity issues within the full P-20 educational pipeline.

  • To equip future educational researchers with innovative teaching experience and cutting-edge transdisciplinary research experience to become attractive job candidates on the academic market.
  • To prepare candidates to create a collaborative learning community that integrates all the various educational contexts.
  • To prepare candidates to be critical thinkers who focus on leadership, policy, ethics, and social justice.

Candidates for the PhD in Education degree must complete a minimum of 54 academic credit hours, pass the comprehensive exam, and submit and successfully defend a research-based dissertation. All students in the program will be expected to complete academic core and research courses of 27 credits and concentration courses of 27 credits. The concentration courses are presented on the the relevant pages and in the PhD Program Handbook .

Wherever you are in your educational journey, you’ve likely heard of the graduate degree called a PhD degree. You may be wondering what is a PhD degree, what are PhD requirements, and what it means to earn a PhD. At this point, you may be questioning if getting a PhD is the right next step for you.

To receive a PhD, you will add the title “Dr.” to you name, but there is much more to it than that. Here, we will dive into what a PhD means, what it takes to earn one, the different kinds of PhD degrees that exist, and the reasons why you may choose to take the path to graduate with one.

What is a PhD?

First thing’s first, let’s define all the ins and outs of what a PhD means. PhD is an abbreviation for “Doctor of Philosophy.”

A PhD is the ultimate academic degree you can earn in a field of choice. To earn a PhD, you must complete original research and evaluate a theory. More often than not, this includes data analysis. This fact is true no matter where you are in the world.

Unlike undergraduate degrees, a PhD is heavily focused on research. As such, lectures are not all that common when working towards earning the degree, but they do still exist. Rather, students will focus particularly on an aspect of the subject choice to create a dissertation. Along with a written thesis, students must present their work orally (known as a “viva voce”) to a group of examiners.

A PhD is recognized around the world as the highest academic achievement. Therefore, no matter where you go, it bears with it an international standard of understanding and a level of respect. It allows for you to be a professor in academia and work in a highly specialized position within the field.

Requirements and Length of Time

While the payoffs of a PhD may seem enticing, the journey to earn your PhD is not an easy or short one.

More often than not, a PhD comes after a master degree. Yet, that’s not always true. Some institutions allow students to skip the master degree and move straight from a bachelor degree into a PhD program.

The time length of a PhD program can vary, but it generally takes three to four years to complete. If a student chooses to study part-time, it could take upwards of six or seven years to graduate.

In order to be accepted into a PhD program, there are a variety of PhD requirements. The most important requirement tends to be proof of high academic standing from your master degree. Some schools may also factor in your bachelor degree grades.

Grades also play a role in assessing the type of funding you may receive. If you have low grades, but still want to pursue a PhD, you’ll likely have to self-fund.

Along with grades, most institutions will also require the following:

1. Proof of language proficiency in the language you will pursue your PhD.

2. resume of work experience and transcript of academic courses., 3. a personal statement sharing your reasons why you want to pursue a phd in your respective field and perhaps why you are choosing the institution., 4. a phd research proposal, which includes:.

  • Your proposed research topic
  • Experience regarding the subject matter

How to get a phd.

Getting a PhD requires planning, research, and commitment. Some schools vary in their requirements to apply, so it’s best practice to create your list of desired schools and research their needs.

You can choose to get a PhD at any age, but it’s best to start thinking proactively when you are moving along your graduate degree program.

Here are the main steps it takes to get a PhD:

1. Get a bachelor’s degree

2. complete the gre, 3. apply to graduate schools, 4. begin master’s or phd program, 5. if master’s, graduate and then apply again for a phd program, 6. complete phd coursework, 7. start research and write a dissertation, 8. share dissertation and get published, 9. graduate with a phd, types of phd.

As recently as 2011, Tim Walz claimed in official biographies for his campaign and congressional office that he was on the verge of completing a doctorate in education, a decade after he enrolled in a Ph.D. program at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota in the small town of Winona.

The university, however, told the Washington Free Beacon that its last records indicating Walz was an active student are dated to 2004.

"We can confirm that Governor Walz attended Saint Mary's from 2001-2004 in our doctorate level Ed.D. program," the school's communications director, Ashly Bissen, told the Free Beacon . "He did not complete the degree program."

Walz would nonetheless claim through 2011 that he was an active student "nearly finished with his doctorate at St. Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota," as his congressional biography put it, four years after he arrived on Capitol Hill.

That claim, like so many others Walz has made about his biography over his political career, was at best a stretch and at worst a lie, the same sort of résumé padding characteristic of other fibs and misrepresentations Walz has made throughout his political career.

But academic dishonesty stands out, including exaggerations. Rep. Andy Ogles (R., Tenn.) last year apologized for stating he had a degree in economics when he’d only taken one economics class and gotten a "C." The CEO of Yahoo was forced out in 2012 after it was discovered he lied about majoring in both computer science and accounting in college. He only majored in accounting.

Walz, who’d been teaching high school for over a decade, started a course of study at St. Mary's in 2001, enrolling in a "cohort doctoral program," a second spokeswoman told the Free Beacon . He stopped taking classes at St. Mary's in 2004 and never earned a degree, the spokeswoman said.

"Governor Walz was enrolled as part of a cohort doctoral program from 2001-2004 and has not taken classes at Saint Mary's since that time," said Michelle Rovang, the school's vice president of communications.

Walz earned a master's degree in "experiential education" (an academic term for hands-on learning, a feature of Walz’s work as a teacher) from Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2002. St. Mary’s told the Free Beacon that the school accepted Walz into its doctoral program on the condition that he’d earn his master’s at nearby Minnesota State.

Getting a master’s degree is an early step toward earning a Ph.D., which requires years of additional study and research and can also require teaching college-level courses and successfully defending a dissertation.

Nonetheless, when Walz ran for Congress in 2006, roughly two years after his last recorded year in the St. Mary’s doctoral program, he portrayed himself on the campaign trail and in Congress as an active student "nearly finished" with his Ph.D. A 2006 voter guide published by the Minnesota Star Tribune indicated that Walz’s Ph.D. was "in progress."

That year, Waltz defeated a five-term Republican incumbent, Gil Gutknecht, who recently told the Free Beacon , when asked about Walz, that "all political figures are guilty of a bit of puffery. He frequently went well beyond that into prevarication."

Indeed, as a sitting member of Congress, Walz continued to claim for years that he was finishing his doctoral degree. His congressional website made those claims through 2011 , an archived version shows. But by 2012, Walz had removed all references to his impending doctorate from his congressional biography .

Walz’s years of misstatements about his academic background are part and parcel of a pattern of prevarication that has followed him from the high school classroom to Capitol Hill to the Minnesota governor's mansion—and now, should Kamala Harris prevail in November, to the Naval Observatory. The misrepresentations, embellishments, and falsehoods have been carefully woven together to create a portrait of a patriot-scholar and exemplary product of the American heartland.

Walz boasted during his 2006 campaign launch that he was "named the Outstanding Young Nebraskan by the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce," a false claim that the Chamber's then-president demanded that Walz correct. Walz’s campaign manager at the time claimed Walz had won an award from the Junior Chamber of Commerce and attributed the error to a "typographical error."

Walz also made the exaggerated claim during his maiden congressional run that in 1989, he’d "earned the title of Nebraska Citizen-Soldier of the Year." In fact, he was one of 52 reservists invited to a brunch for recipients of the "Citizens Soldiers Awards," an event sponsored by a mysterious civic group called Ak-Sar-Ben, which is "Nebraska" spelled backward.

Walz further stated that his yearlong teaching stint in China came through a program at Harvard University for which he was hand-picked by the school. While the program was founded by Harvard undergraduates, it does not appear to have ever been officially associated with the Ivy League school.

Walz has also lied about his own family, telling MSNBC in July that his "two beautiful children" would not be alive without in vitro fertilization. His kids were not conceived through IVF but rather through a non-controversial, far less costly, and far less invasive procedure known as intrauterine insemination. The lie gives Walz, a middle-aged man, a personal connection to the battle for so-called women’s reproductive rights that Democrats see as a winning issue this year.

Walz's most controversial claims, however, pertain to his time in the Army National Guard.

Walz, who served in the guard for 24 years, has said he carried guns "in war." His campaign promoted news stories that described him as one of a "number of veterans from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq" running for Congress.

But Walz never served in Afghanistan. While he spent time in Norway and Italy working in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, he never saw combat and never set foot in the war theater. When his National Guard battalion was being eyed for a deployment to Iraq, Walz issued a March 2005 campaign press release pledging to "serve if called upon" and run for Congress from the Middle East. But two months later, in May, he retired from the guard. By July, his old unit received notice of the deployment, and Walz never joined them in Iraq.

It's unclear how close Walz was to achieving his doctorate and whether he formally withdrew from St. Mary's. His time at St. Mary's overlapped with his deployment to Italy, which came in 2003 and concluded in 2004. Walz had taken five years, from 1997 to 2002, to complete his master's degree at Minnesota State, according to the New York Times . He was also teaching school at the time.

The current iteration of the doctoral program Walz enrolled in can be completed in as little as four years, according to St. Mary's, and the school requires students to complete it in eight years. Rovang said students "do not need to formally withdraw from a graduate or doctorate program." She also said the program "has changed a great deal" since Walz was enrolled and declined to provide program details from that time.

The Harris campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

Though Walz's master's degree is not in question, some of the details surrounding his higher education experience have been misreported, including by Walz himself.

Walz has repeatedly said, including in his congressional bios, that he received his master's degree in education in 2001, a claim that media outlets such as CNN , the Washington Post , and Politico have echoed. Minnesota State University, Mankato media relations director Dan Benson, however, says the school conferred Walz the degree on May 10, 2002.

"I, too, have seen media reports that list 2001 as the year Walz received his master's degree," Benson told the Free Beacon , "but per Minnesota State Mankato records, that is wrong."

"For media members who have asked, the date of May 10, 2002, has been provided as the date Walz earned his master of science degree in experiential education. University records show that Walz's last day as an enrolled student at Minnesota State University, Mankato, was July 26, 2002."

That means Walz was enrolled simultaneously at Minnesota State and St. Mary's, which told the Free Beacon it accepted Walz for its Ph.D. program on the condition that he’d complete his master’s degree at Minnesota State.

"We have often accepted students conditionally in a cohort program when they are successfully finishing a master's degree at another institution," Rovang said.

Media outlets such as the New York Times have also noted that Walz "wrote his thesis on Holocaust education." Benson, however, said Walz "wrote what is called an ' alternate plan paper ,'" which, unlike a thesis, consists of an "evaluation and analysis" of outside sources rather than original research.

"Many media organizations have referred to this as his 'thesis' in their news stories," Benson said.

But in fact, Walz did not perform the kind of original, academic research that’s required to produce a master’s thesis. And he never completed his doctoral work, which would have required original research at a more advanced level.

M.A. in Special Education

Master of Arts Degree (M.A.) in Various Concentrations

The Master of Arts degree in Special Education provides the professional educator with advanced knowledge and skills in special education. This degree has many requirements in common with the   Education Specialist Clear/Induction Credentials in Special Education   and may be earned concurrently with those credentials. Although the M.A. degree is usually linked to a teaching credential, it is open to individuals with undergraduate degrees in a wide range of disciplines in consultation with the graduate advisor.

Admission requirements for the M.A. include the prerequisite course SPED 527 and at least a 3.0 GPA from credential and undergraduate studies.

In general, applicants will be programmed for Plan B, the seminar plan. After the student is approximately halfway through the program, has secured an adviser, and established a thesis plan, permission to transfer to Plan A may be requested. Plan A is designed for students who have a particular research problem they wish to investigate in some detail. Requests for transfer to Plan A must be prepared as an official change in the program for the master’s degree, countersigned by the faculty adviser, and submitted to the Office of Graduate Programs in the College of Education.

Candidates for the Master of Arts degree in education who elect Plan B, must pass the comprehensive examination.

How self-reflection has guided this graduate

For spring break, Annarose Jowenson , the campus minister for social justice at Seattle University, takes a group of students to Tijuana, Mexico. They stay there for a week, helping a local nonprofit build homes for people in the community. At the end of each day, after their work is done, they sit in a circle to reflect on their experiences. And then, when the trip is over, they reconvene for a series of debrief sessions. 

Jowenson asks questions—What did this experience mean for you? How might it inform changes you want to make in your own lives?—and the students seek to make meaning out of their work. 

“Reflecting on your experiences,” says Jowenson, “allows you to take full advantage of the ways that they can inform your identity and your purpose.”

Jowenson honed her understanding of the value of self-reflection as a graduate student in the M.S.W/M.A. dual degree program at Boston College, where she studied social work and theology and ministry from 2019 to 2022.

Self-reflection is a pillar of the University’s long-held commitment to formative education —a guided process that helps students find purpose, live fulfilling lives, and understand the world around them.

And it’s the key component of the latest theme for the BC School of Social Work’s Equity, Justice, and Inclusion Initiative , which is calling on students to harness the power of contemplation to make sense of their experiences.

As a student, Jowenson regularly reflected on the interplay between her practical learning in the field and her theoretical learning in the classroom. She recalled her internship for the City of Newton, Massachusetts’ Department of Youth Services , where she developed lesson plans for high school students in an alternative education program. Not only did this experience inform the focus of her assignments, she said, but it also enabled her to facilitate classroom discussions with her peers. 

“I was writing papers based off of programming that I was facilitating in my field placement,” she recalls, “and bringing my lived experience from my field placement into the classroom to say, ‘This is what I’m witnessing and this is how this is playing out.’”

As part of BCSSW’s experiential learning program, Jowenson was required to create written accounts of her interactions at Newton’s Department of Youth Services. Through these written recordings, she examined her own emotions and reactions to the conditions she was working to address, giving her opportunities to explore personal issues that might have influenced her decision making.

“At the end of the day, I found myself really grateful to sit down and put into words what was happening,” says Jowenson. “When I looked back through those reflections, I saw my personal growth as a social worker and an increased awareness of myself, of different situations, and of best practices.”

Oftentimes, Jowenson’s self-reflections extended beyond formalized assignments and classroom discussions. She  routinely had informal chats with faculty and staff, including her field advisor Ximena Soto, about the direction she wanted to take her career. 

“What do you enjoy doing?” Jowenson remembers Soto asking her. “What are your best skills? Do you think you’d rather study in the clinical or macro program?”

“ It was really interesting for me to be able to incorporate both my theological studies into my social work and my social work into my ministerial studies. I already knew that faith informs justice, and justice informs faith, but this program was right up my alley because the work that I was doing was very much praxis. ”

After spending four years as a youth minister at Saint Louise Parish in Bellevue, Washington, Jowenson knew that she wanted to continue working in ministry. But she also realized that she needed to expand her skillset if she wanted to help young people navigate difficult situations to the best of her ability. When she looked into the M.S.W./M.A. dual degree program at BC, offered through the School of Social Work and the School of Theology and Ministry , she discovered that she had found the right program to help her accomplish her goal.

Jowenson found her discussions with faculty especially useful in helping her discover her true vocation—in helping her pinpoint the courses she needed to take and the field experiences she needed to have in order to become expert in serving both the pastoral and social needs of individuals, groups, and communities.

“It was really interesting for me to be able to incorporate both my theological studies into my social work and my social work into my ministerial studies,” says Jowenson, a macro practitioner who belonged to BCSSW’s Latinx Leadership Initiative , a cohort-based program that prepares students to work with Latinx communities to create sustainable solutions to complex problems. “I already knew that faith informs justice, and justice informs faith, but this program was right up my alley because the work that I was doing was very much praxis.”

At Seattle University, Jowenson runs a formation program for students who participate in the spring break trip to Mexico. She meets with the students once a week for the two months leading up the trip, asking them to reflect on what they want to take away from the experience. 

She makes them read “To Hell with Good Intentions,” a speech by Ivan Illich, a Roman Catholic Priest who questioned the intent to send well-meaning American college students to volunteer in far-flung corners of the world.

Her goal is twofold: to disabuse students of the notion that they are needed to help people in Tijuana and to push them to reflect on why, exactly, they want to forgo their vacation to build homes instead. 

“I try to break down any sort of savior complex that students might have coming in,” says Jowenson. “Life will continue as normal for all of these people, regardless of whether we go or not. So what is it that is really informing their experience? Why are they here? What are they trying to do?”

Jowenson practices what she preaches, incorporating self-reflection into her assessments of her own work. She ponders her purpose, her pedagogy. She wonders how her programs, such as the weeklong spring break trip, will help her students use their gifts in service with and for others. 

“What do I want students to get out of this?” she thinks. “And how are they going to leave here making the world a better place?”

What can I do with a nurse educator degree?

The nurse educator program provides students the opportunity to gain skills and strategies to effectively teach in an academic or practice setting through experiential learning and rigorous classroom practice.  

The fully online program includes 270 hours of face-to-face practicum experiences in a variety of settings that are individualized to the student’s professional experience, interest and academic needs. Program faculty offer diverse experiences, provide exciting teaching strategies and act as role models for students in the program.   

Out-of-state students are strongly encouraged to discuss clinical requirements with the assistant dean of graduate programs. Clinical arrangements are not able to be made in all states. There is an ever-increasing need for nursing faculty as the average age of experienced faculty is rising and current instructors are reaching retirement age. Due to a faculty shortage, many qualified undergraduate and graduate applicants to nursing schools are denied entrance. Baccalaureate-prepared nurses who obtain a nurse educator master’s degree are in high demand nationally and throughout the St. Louis metropolitan region.
