Doctoral/postgraduate (PhD) education at SLU Aqua

Teacher ans students in classroom

The Department of Aquatic Resources (SLU Aqua) educates PhD candidates (doctoral/postgraduate students) in the subjects environmental analysis and biology (specialty: ecology). The education takes four years and the major part consists of individual research and thesis work.

Our doctoral students (PhD candidates) work with issues such as how changes in climate and environment affect fish and fisheries, population and ecosystem dynamics and invasive species. Many of them contribute with knowledge to international projects and to ICES (the International Council for Exploration of the Seas) .

The research of the department is of an applied character, and the knowledge produced is thus often directly applicable in the management of our seas, lakes and watercourses. Thanks to our extensive environmental monitoring and assessment, we have access to large amounts of unique data and as our doctoral student you also have great opportunities to participate in data collection yourself as well as pursuing fieldwork and laboratory work.

The education is adapted to each individual and to each project in question and your supervisors are among Sweden’s leading experts in their research fields. They support you during the course of the work together with the Director of Studies for Doctoral Education of our department.

water resources engineering phd position in sweden

PhD programmes

When you apply for a phd programme in sweden, you’re actually applying for a job. yeah, you read that right. 👀.

water resources engineering phd position in sweden

“Do a master’s here – I’d say it’s a very good step to doing a PhD in Sweden. I did my master’s at Malmö University and now I’m doing a PhD at Lund University” – Sanjay, Malmö University. Photo: Oskar Omne

So that means – no tuition fees, no scholarships. But you’ll receive a monthly salary instead. Nice, eh? And that’s why available PhD positions are listed on a university’s job board.

How to apply for a PhD position? You’ll apply directly to the university.

Just so you know, there’s no centralised application process. And things like requirements and application dates? This kind of stuff is decided by each department. But we do know that you’ll need to have a master’s degree – in the same field of study – and a great level of English to apply for a PhD here. You might even need to be fluent in Swedish. But that’ll depend on the subject.

Doctoral position in treatment of source separated greywater

Sweden Water Research in collaboration with Nordvästra Skånes Vatten och Avlopp AB (NSVA) is looking for you who are willing to pursue a PhD degree and are interested in in wastewater treatment. You will research future ways to purify source-separated wastewater to very low emission levels using biological, mechanical and chemical treatment.

Doctoral student in water and environmental engineering

Sweden Water Research is a research and development company that researches water and develops new effective solutions to meet the water services industry’s future challenges. We both initiate and lead projects, networks, and collaborate and provide active support for innovations in the water sector. Sweden Water Research is owned by NSVA, Sydvatten AB and VA SYD and is financed through each organization allocating at least one percent of their revenue to the R&D company. Via the owners, the company is anchored in 18 municipalities in Skåne, Sweden. The head office is located at Ideon in the city of Lund.

Project description and Tasks:

The focus of this doctoral position is advanced treatment of municipal wastewater with a focus on treatment of source separated greywater to very low emission levels that allow discharge of treated water in inland water bodies. Different process configurations will be studied, for example mechanical, biological and chemical pre-treatment of greywater with subsequent polishing steps based on ground-based horizontal filters. A significant part of the tasks includes experimental work as well as operation of test facilities and laboratory analyzes.

As an industrial doctoral student, you will have a strong connection to the university and your doctoral education, but the role also means that you will regularly be on site in Recolab and then in close collaboration with staff and co-administrators build, develop, optimize and follow up a greywater treatment pilot.

As a doctoral student, you will also be involved in the work planned with a local greywater solution for 10,000 people in Helsingborg (Östra Ramlösa)

The tasks also include participation in teaching and other departmental work, however, a maximum of 10% of working hours.

Confirm one (or more) future solutions for greywater treatment that enable local decentralized treatment and discharge in the immediate area.

The interest and need for local solutions is already present today in our world. By working out a solution that enables local separation of greywater, expensive and less cost-effective rebuilding of old existing infrastructure is avoided.

Eligibility :

A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

  • has graduated at advanced level,
  • has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
  • Has very good oral and written proficiency in English.
  • Driving license (B) required.

Assessment criteria:

Postdoctoral position in Water Resources Engineering with focus on the hydrologic cycle in a watershed

Job information, offer description.

Lund University, The Faculty of Engineering, The Department of Department of Building and Environmental Technology, Division of Water Resources Engineering will employ a postdoctoral fellow for three years starting from 1 February 2024. The position is a part of the Lund University-wide Interdisciplinary program focusing on Agenda 2030 and sustainable development. Within LU4Water, six postdoctoral fellowships at six faculties (Law, Social Science, Humanities, Science, Economics and Engineering) will be announced.

Agenda 2030

The 2030 Agenda is the framework for sustainable development signed by the world's countries to end extreme poverty, reduce inequalities, solve the climate crisis, promote peace and justice and much more. To achieve the agenda's sustainability goals, research has several important roles: identifying challenges and goal conflicts, contributing new solutions, creating dialogue, and learning between different social actors and critically analyzing the goals included in Agenda 2030.

Lund University wants to be part of the solution and has therefore started a research program for sustainable development with postdoctoral positions in various interdisciplinary projects. The projects should not only form platforms for the postdocs' career development but should also form a basis for national and European applications and for future environments for excellence and profiling. Within the program, the postdocs' higher education teaching skills must also be developed.  For more information about the programme, please visit Excellence Programme for Sustainable Development | Sustainability Forum (lu.se)

Description of the workplace

The current postdoctoral fellowship will be placed at the Division of Water Resources Engineering, in the Department of Building and Environmental technology. Here, research and teaching pursue the understanding of how water resides and is transported in nature and in urban systems. This includes, but is not limited to, studies on the movement of rainwater, how rain and melted snow reach rivers, flooding and systems to reduce the consequences of flooding, water flows, factors affecting water quality, and erosion along open coasts, rivers and lakes. At the division, there are around 30 employes and in total 20 PhD students.

The current position is within the water management group that covers research in integrated water reource management, hydrology, groundwater recharge, modelling, source water quality and contaminaton. The position involves creative and varied work, and the Postdoc will become a member of a dynamic and multifaceted research group.

Subject description

Researchers from six faculties, Science, Engineering, Law, Economy, Humanities and Theology and Social Sciences will collaborate on developing a new framework for implementing Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) built on digitalisation, big data, remote sensing, and water governance following the legal and economic structures within the family of EU water directives.

Water is a dynamic resource which can be reused many times in a catchment. Together with the other postdocs employed in the project, all water needs will be identified and given priority. The consequences if the water needed for each use becomes restricted will be analysed. Risks of floods or drought, as well as low water quality, will be uncovered. Innovative aspects such as state-of-the-art wastewater treatment and water reuse methods will be related to balanced measures between urban and rural areas as well as equitable measures between different socioeconomic layers of society, inspiring a transfer to a circular economy. Innovative applications of online sensor technologies for data collections and watershed digital twins for the description and modelling of water availability will be developed. Collaboration with water utilities and software companies to improve efficiency and decrease pollutant transport will be elaborated.

Work duties

The purpose of the position is to develop the independence as a researcher and to create the opportunity of further development. The main duties involved in a post-doctoral position is to conduct research.
