Birthday speeches.

They're fun to listen to and fantastic to be on the receiving end of.  However writing one for somebody you love can be a completely different story. And I'm picking that's why you here.

I understand the issues involved in preparing a speech, especially one for someone close to you! They can be daunting.

What's the common problem with writing a birthday speech?

The problem is not because you don't want to publicly acknowledge the person whose birthday it is. You do.

It's generally more a case of agony caused by indecision through not knowing where to start.

Perhaps you've read my birthday speech tips page and are caught up wondering what to put in, what to leave out, how long will the speech take to say when it's finished, and what joke or special quotation to use, if any?

Now I know this struggle, because I've been there, done that and chewed the tops of pencils down too. A blank page has a tyranny all of its own! 

A birthday speech example

So to help preserve your pencil collection and your sanity here's an example speech which I hope lessens at least some of the anxiety you may feel about writing.

Speech context

Before you rush on to read it, you need context. That is you need to know who this speech is for, who wrote it, why the birthday is significant and the setting it is delivered in. This will help you make sense of it, giving you a complete picture.

Enter Alan West

Although I wrote this speech especially for you, we're pretending it was written for the 50th birthday of a man called Alan West. We're also pretending it was delivered at a party for his friends and family by his close friend of 30 years, Mark.

As you read it, imagine you are hearing it spoken aloud.

You'll see he's been "roasted" - teased, or made fun of, in a kindly way. 

The speech has a speaking time of approximately 5-6 minutes, depending on how fast, or slowly, you speak. That length is good for this type of occasion. 

 50th birthday speech for Alan West

"Good evening all. It's great to have you here.  Most of you know my feeling on birthdays.

Generally I say, what's the big deal?

By the  time you've had over thirty, there should be a cease and desist order against them.

They're not unusual. Everybody has them and at the same rate as everybody else - one a  year. They happen whether you want them to or not.

Believe me, I know. I've had quite a few  and looking around this room I can see it's the same for others as well.

So why are we here?

It's not to celebrate the inevitable passage of time but something much more. Everyone has  birthdays but not everyone is my friend, Alan West.

Alan, you are unique. And today I'm gladly putting aside my grumbles about birthday  speeches, balloons, presents and silly hats, to honor you.

You've reached the 50 milestone. 50 birthdays, that's a whole lot of living. Enough  to establish the character of a man, to know who he is. And I've known you through about 30  of them.

So what I want to know is, when are you going to give up the idea that you're a surfer? 

We all know your geriatric surfboard has gone to the beach with you every summer for at least the  last 15 years and never once got wet. Millie says you're waiting for the big one. I say it  happened in 1988 and you were too busy zinc coating your nose to notice.

Rumor has it that  your surfboard has been bolted to the top of whatever wagon you've had is ever since.

Likewise his growing collection of fancy running shoes. He says he can't seem to get a good  fit these days. I say his days of being good and fit have long since gone, up and over the  hill.

And then there's the annual season tickets to 10 nights of film festival screenings.

They  seem like a good idea. They were a good idea in the days when the ratio of  surplus energy to the number of hours in a day was higher.

Doesn't he know, he's at that age when his back is expected to go out more frequently  than himself?

But seriously folks, aside from his lamentable quirks of character Alan is a friend - a real  one. He's there when you need him - offering practical advice on just about everything, from  how to unblock the drains to how to meet personal tragedy with courage.

And Alan's not a  mere theorist who has read the books. He walks his talk and walks it tall.

I know he's shy about having his good deeds displayed in public.

A less kind person than myself  might say that's because if everybody knew just how helpful he could be, he'd be called upon  all the time. And that would mean no time for polishing the surfboard or adding another pair  of shoes to the collection. But I know better. He's modest.

However on this occasion I'm  going to ignore his finer feelings. 

I thought it would be great to publicly acknowledge all the personal and lovable qualities we admire about Alan. So I asked around.

I had a couple of contributions. One from Sam who mentioned his foot size was  similar to yours and that his runners were down at heel.

The other was from my son who said  he'd be willing to take the film passes off his hands.

Neither was the type of thing I had in mind. So I was forced to think for myself.

Alan, you're an important touchstone in my life.

For 30 years we've stood by each other through the good as well as difficult, challenging times.

I value your opinion (when it's not on the dubious merit of old surfboards). I value the way we can agree to disagree and still count each other as friends. I admire your humor and humility. Then there's your persistence which some might call stubbornness.

I could go on but because I want to preserve what's left of our friendship and  myself, I won't. They say, looks can't kill however the one you're giving me now seems  murderous.

So before I'm forcibly shut-up, I'll do it myself.

In conclusion, please raise your glasses to Alan, to friendship and to birthdays. May you  have many more."

There's a very simple reason I like this 40th birthday speech sample: it's truly a gift of love from husband to wife, without a hint of condescension.

Seriously, though, I will try my best to be a better me, Daughter 2.0, a version of me that's modeled on the best of you. You are so special to me, to our family and all your BFFs. 

Many, many, many thanks for all you do. You truly live by the motto of giving everything and expecting nothing in return. I don't think I know a more thoughtful and generous person. For everyone who knows and loves you, you are our resourceful, loving matriarch and health nut, devoted to family and friends, over whom you fuss, spoil and most definitely feed—hungry or not—whenever we come to visit you.

The Lord brought you into this world 50 years ago — on a Sunday — spiritually, a day of rest, a day of worship, a day of great joy, a day of solidarity, a gift from God. An important day, to say the least.

Peter's day of birth is worth mentioning since, for him, giving his heart to God has meant a new life, a new purpose, a new sense of self. It has meant washing his earthly worries away, day after day, and trusting in God to guide him. Peter has chosen to trust in God's plan and will. He now knows that no matter what happens, good or bad, God is watching over him and bringing him to where he's supposed to be…at home, around the corner or on the road.

A good man in so many ways, Peter has shown his love for God by observing God's commandments and applying God's principles. And this has not been in vain. By living in harmony with God's guidance, Peter has shown our heavenly Father that he truly appreciates all that he has done for him. And I can definitely say that we here have been the main beneficiaries of Peter's love and kindness.

Yes, Peter, today not only marks a major milestone for you, but also for us. I know I speak for everyone here when I say it's such a joy to celebrate you and your life, and wish you the best of health and happiness. And what a celebration it is. I'm sure you must be quite moved by the presence of so many loved ones, a clear sign that you are cherished by many.

Indeed, we are here to celebrate your smile, your patience, your optimism, your caring and, most of all, your steadfastness, which has always been an example of what it means to be the best kind of son, father, grandfather, brother and friend. You have definitely set the "how to be a God-loving man" bar very, very high.

Everybody here has learned so much from you over the years. Along with the immense love, joy and kindness you've brought into our lives, you've taught us all, by example, the real value of love, family, friendship, caring, honesty and the Lord's ever-present care and power in their lives. You've shown us how to appreciate what we have and never take it for granted. You have always been, and always will be, an inspiration to all of us here.

For you, today must be bittersweet. Sweet because you can look back on your 50 years of life with satisfaction and pride, knowing that everyone here, including me, consider you a treasure, a best friend and a man who loves God — and bitter because many of your loved ones are not here to share it with you. But I know you find comfort from knowing they are all in the Lord's loving arms.

For me, well, today is a chance to say thank you on behalf of our family and friends. Thank you for serving as a shining example of God's goodness and grace. Of course, these amazing qualities of yours are timeless and ageless — they radiate from your very essence. They come from your heart and cast a beautiful light around you and us. We have all been lucky to be near enough to step into that light.

Take a few moments to list all the qualities and funny moments in dot points to give you an understanding of what you want to highlight. After listing them all down, take the time to elaborate on the points.

Find a sample birthday speech that you feel is suitable for the occasion. Use the points and information that you had written previously and incorporate them into the sample speech. So whilst I am up here talking about this amazing day today we are celebrating, I have to say all the beautiful memories don’t I? Wrong. All I remember is the most embarrassing moments because I laughed so hard my glasses fell off my head, then I wasn’t too happy because I had to buy new ones.

So where do I start, my memory isn’t the best the older I get, that’s why my wife makes me do a crossword puzzle a day. First would be marrying this beautiful lady I call my cook… I mean wife Ha-Ha.

Second would be becoming a father to these beautiful children standing in front of me, I am blessed to have the opportunity to raise these amazing children of mine and have never been more proud.

And thirdly, to the many people here today celebrating my birthday. I would not be the person standing here before you if it weren’t for each and everyone of you shaping me to who I am today.

I felt like writing this speech took me few minutes though I was told I was writing for most of the bloody day! Ha-Ha.

Now, as we celebrate your 1st birthday, you don’t understand anything right now, but when you do I’ll be saying another speech like this to embarrass you. More for the loving mother that I am to make sure you never forget something so important like this day.

I guess I will start with most that I know and the beautiful things I remember. I was the happiest man when I found out you were a boy, I was filled with joy! You weren’t very good at hiding your muddy trails. How sweet and cute that was.

You would always cry when I tried to feed you, and you loved to pee on me when I tried to change you. You were a sneaky little bugger and you loved to touch. Anyone who knows him, knows that he will go out of his way to ensure everyone is having a laugh. Even at his own expense, he wants to ensure everyone is having a great time.

Secondly I have been blessed with two beautiful boys who are an absolute pain in my ass, Ha-Ha! Though I do love so dearly! Apart from my gorgeous wife, I never thought I would love these boys so much, as much as I do. It must be because they remind me so much of me when I was growing up… Ha-Ha!

And thirdly… To all of you beautiful people standing here before me today. How can I not enjoy having each and every one of you in my life. I mean how lucky can a man get to have such funny, supportive and caring friends. Blessed is the word I use to describe having all of you be apart of my journey through life. Thank you all for being here today. Its is honestly an honour to celebrate this day with all of you here tonight.

To my two boys, I am proud of both of you and must say you are both still a pain in my ass. Must be because you remind me of when I was a kid growing up. Ha-Ha, they do say that karma eventually comes around. I can now understand what I put my parents through when I was growing up! But jokes aside they a great boys and couldn’t wish for any better.

Obviously I need to give a shout out to mum and dad for putting up with me over my younger years. Considering i’m sure many of you agree, I was no angel growing up. I like to think I turned out alright. Ha-Ha! Though I do have to say they were always there for support and was truly blessed to have incredible parents. I love you both.

To all my close family and friends here tonight. Thank you all for coming and most importantly, thank you for being apart of my life. All of you, in one way or another have been apart of my incredible journey of being 50 years on this earth and I wouldn’t want it any way.

Married to his high school sweetheart for 28 years, and with two pretty awesome kids, Ha-Ha. Sorry but I had to add that in. He has shown to be the best role model any family could ask for.

He has always been one to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and is not shy to have a casual drink when in good company.

When it comes to creating an entertaining and memorable speech for a birthday party, you might not be sure how to begin. Here are a few tips for creating a birthday speech, whether it’s for your birthday or that of a colleague, friend or loved one.

Is it for your birthday or someone else’s birthday?

This will make a big difference in how you create this speech. If it’s for yourself, the speech will include thanking people for attending, sharing your memories (successes and challenges), mentioning the impact of your friends and family, and looking to the future. For example, if you are delivering a 50th birthday speech, you will cover important events and people in your life, thank people who have helped you along the way (parents, spouse, other family and friends, etc) and speak about plans for the future. It’s a big day of your life, so you’ll want to think about, plan and write a birthday speech well in advance.

I am so grateful to have such a great friend in my life! We met in Junior High, one of the toughest years for any adolescent. Throughout the past 17 years, I have seen Tammy grow into the beautiful, caring and loving person that she has become. When thinking about giving this speech tonight, I decided to focus on one quality that truly shines in Tammy. That quality is her passion!

Any goal that Tammy sets her mind to she does with passion and dedication! This passion has led her to change the lives of many students, friends, and family.

While sitting in the most awful math classes of all time, Tammy looked at me and said that she was going to be a teacher. She is now the most passionate teacher that I know.

She truly strives every day to be there for her students in the most difficult years of their lives. She has had students come back several years later, after graduating high school, and thank her for changing the course of their lives by not only educating, but inspiring them.

Tammy also has a passion for her husband and family. Dan and Tammy have one of the most caring and understanding partnerships that I have ever seen.

You can see the passion they have for each other and their family. Tammy has many roles to play, and one of them is a chauffeur. She makes sure that her family's needs are met and that fun is a family priority! She attends every soccer game, gymnastic meet and dance recital. She even makes sure that date nights happen!

Tammy has a passion for life. She is always the one planning parties. She is also there when you need a shoulder to cry on. She is one of the most caring, wonderful people I know.

I am honored to call her my friend and to be here today to celebrate her 30th birthday.

Since her talents and kindness have touched us in such a special way, it seems only fitting to take the time to honor her with this party.

When I say talents, I’m referring to her culinary skills and the incredible pies she makes us. So good!

I’m also referring to her financial prowess and knowledge of tax law. Who needs Turbo Tax , when you have a mom like ours?

But as I said, Mom has always been there and when you live with someone, you really get to know them. You get to know their funny quirks like how they always double and triple-check that you remembered things like your books or your lunch before leaving the house for school in the morning.

In Mom’s case, she’d follow us down the street to make sure we had our things in hand. One time, one of our friends thought we were being stalked, but we assured them this was just how our Mom was.

Or how about the time I forgot my science project at home? She actually nearly pulled together a police escort to get the thing delivered to the school on time for the Science Fair. That was great, but all the other kids saw it and we didn’t hear the end of THAT for quite some time. I was always proud of her passion, even if some people thought it was a bit “obsessive.” (And I mean that in a good way, Mom!)

Another very cool thing was that Mom is/was also psychic. Whenever my sisters and I would come home just five minutes late, Mom would be standing inside the door as though she knew the exact moment we’d arrive. Sometimes we’d wonder if she’d been standing there all night! (My brother is nodding his head, yes. So maybe she really did hover near the door when we girls were on dates.)

I know all of these things make it seem that Mom was overly protective, but she really wasn’t. She was just very interested in her kids. In fact, she came to every one of our sports games, every school play, and every field trip. Of course, as a fantastic baker, she participated in every bake sale we had. It always kept her busy.

We are all so grateful for the love, the help, and the wonderful meals she made for us. Mom always took very good care of her family. Hopefully, this party will show her just how much we really love her.

50th Birthday Speech From Wife to Husband

He may be an old fart, but he’s still young at heart! I want to thank you all for being here. I’m going to use it … the ultimate “F” word: John’s turned fifty!! Even scarier is knowing I’m not far behind!

Though many years have passed, I can still remember every one I’ve spent with him like it was yesterday. He is truly one of a kind, and I am delivering this speech to honor him and the amazing memories he’s created that we cherish.

50 is a big number and I’ve been lucky to spend the last 30 of them with him:

• 30 years and nothing has changed – except less hair and more love
• 30 years to make the perfect butt indent in the couch
• 30 year-long “honey-do” list … and I’m proud to say, it’s half done!
• And we’ve had 30 years to grow more in love.

I can say the fishing tales continue as usual, but that fish that got away keeps getting bigger!

The “honey-do” list keeps getting longer.

And his ability to forget birthdays and anniversaries has never improved.

Even with all these quirks, he is still the most wonderful man, husband, and father. He can now add “wonderful grandfather” to that list, too!

He’s been teaching for 30 years and this passion will continue even after retirement with four grandchildren hanging on his every word.

He always makes us laugh – like the time he had that “big catch” of a fish that he attempted to reel in. He was concentrating so hard, he fell straight into the water! And after all that, including the wet clothes, he realized his big catch was a large tree stump!

He has always been the shoulder to bear the weight of my problems – ensuring that no matter what, his family and friends are happy.

Let’s take this night to celebrate John and all his amazing qualities, as well as the impact he has on our lives.

Raise your glasses and let’s toast to an amazing husband, loving father, caring grandfather, and great friend. And most of all … a precious gem we’re all grateful to have in our lives.

When I think of my dad, I think of the person I look up to and always strive to be like. My dad has always made sure his loved ones were cared for (even if he wasn’t). He always made sure even in the roughest times, we kids never knew about or “felt” the struggles.

Like everyone else, my childhood was less than perfect, but dad always made the best of it and made it perfect for us.

Dad has always been known for his calm and soothing demeanor. A running joke is that dad has two speeds “slow” and “reverse.” He always takes every day one at a time and doesn’t sweat the small stuff. I swear dad will live to be 150 because he never stresses about anything.

If any of you have spent enough time with dad, you know what I mean when I say dad has an amazing sense of humor, though his jokes are, shall we say … different. But I admit, I laugh so hard I almost cry. The famous dad joke … wait for it…

What is orange and green and red all over?? A wounded cheezie hopping in the grass!

It goes without saying, but my dad means the world to me and I will always be daddy’s little girl!!

And as long as you have a nap you can stay up all night, just like me!  Some people might think you’re old, but not me. I know I can still count on you to go camping, even if we have to camp closer to the bathrooms now.

I know I tease and poke fun, but you really mean a lot to me…to all of us.  We hope you enjoy your party because we had a great time putting it together. We did it to show you how much we love you and to make sure you didn’t get depressed!

First Step: Brainstorm

This is where you’ll decide on the theme and direction of your speech.  It’s a list of ideas you can add to as you go.  You’ll do this brainstorming step before anything else, then plug these ideas into the rest of the steps below.

So how do you do this?

Well, you’re going to write down all the important points you want to convey in this 50th birthday speech.

Ask yourself these questions and write them down.  If doing this brings to mind other things, by all means, include them as well:

• Who is the speech for? (A spouse, parent, sibling, friend, or another relative?)
• What style do you want to attain? (Funny, serious, inspirational, etc.)
• And how long do you want your speech to be?  (Short and sweet, or more lengthy because you have a lot to say?)

This part is a flash from the past, going back to school days when we, as students, had to do some writing as part of the curriculum.  Hopefully, you have fond memories of this from your growing-up years!

Back in those days, we students had to write essays and book reports.  We didn’t just blurt out our reports any old way we chose. We used a structure.  That same structure can be applied to writing a speech.

Here it is. Does it ring any bells from your schoolday memories?

• Introduction
• Body Idea #1
• Body Idea #2
• Body Idea #3, etc.  (As many or as few of these as you wish.)

Using this basic arrangement will help you know what to write.  You’ll plug in the ideas from your brainstorm list and simply write each section — separately, if necessary.  Then tie each section together.  Plus, since your oration will be well-organized, your audience will be very impressed with your public speaking skills!

Now I’ll cover some tips and tricks for each section of your 50th birthday speech.

Content Ideas

Okay, now you have some idea of messages you want to convey or things to include from the brainstorm above. They can be married together into an overall theme or simply included as a body idea item. The good news is, you’re part of the way there already!

Here might be some examples:

• You want to honor and convey your love for that person.
• They’ve had a significant impact on your life and you want to thank them.
• You want to express the joy they bring to your life.
• You want to take the opportunity to give them a hard time.  😉
• Anything else you might think of.

Moving on, if you completed the brainstorming step and feel okay about it, you have numerous ideas of sentiments and ideas to cover in your speech.

Beyond that, if you want to take it to the next level, here are some ideas to make your speech more interesting or even entertaining:

• Use some famous quotes, funny birthday quotes, or sayings.
• Personal milestones they have achieved in their life.
• Highlight their endearing characteristics and qualities.
• Mention or focus on special goals they wish to achieve in the future.
• Touch on their hobbies and pastimes.
• What did they want to be when they grew up, and what did they actually become?
• What are some special memories and experiences you’ve had with that person?
• What does this person mean to you?
• What historical events happened on their birthday?
• What popular songs or movies were out the day they were born?
• Extraordinary adventures they’ve been on.
• The story of how you two met.

Okay, now that we’ve covered all of that, let’s put this all together.

Writing Your 50th Birthday Speech

Here’s a suggestion on how to get this masterpiece to take shape:

• Write the body of your speech first. Once you have a solid body, you can complement it with the introduction and conclusion.
• After your body is ready, write the conclusion.
• And once the conclusion is completed, move on to the introduction. (Notice the intro is at the end.  That is so you can get your main ideas down, then create a really nice lead-in introduction that works nicely with the body.)

But!  Let’s say things are just not flowing. What do you do?

• If things just aren’t flowing well, write what does flow first.  Just get it down on paper. Then, take the next thing that comes to mind and write that.
• There is no perfect plan for everyone, it’s whatever works that matters. You’re not going to be graded on this.
• If in doubt, ask a friend or loved one to read it. They can advise you on how it sounds and where might be going off track.

Once you get through your draft, make sure to:

• Read it out loud.  Listen to how the words flow and if the ideas are cohesive.  How does it sound?
• Have someone else read it, as I said above.  What may sound good to you, might sound funny to someone else or it may sound great and you’re just too close to it to tell.

Rehearse Your 50th Birthday Speech

Even if you’re an expert public speaker, it never hurts to rehearse.  And if you’re a novice, you will especially want to practice.  Why?  Because practicing your speech will make you feel more relaxed and comfortable.  A lot of what will make your speech a success is how you deliver it, so practice!

• Say your speech in the mirror. This gives you a chance to make sure it flows, the grammar and language are okay, and you’ve covered everything you wanted.
• If you can, try to recruit an audience of friends or family members to critique what you have to say.
• Incorporate any reasonable changes.

• Make sure your intro is something that grabs everyone’s attention.
• Small jokes or good-natured pokes at their age may be appropriate.

• Use a call to action – something like a toast to the guest of honor.

Vice-chancellors face a difficult task asserting their free speech obligations against the “mob veto”, according to journalist and public policy expert Jonathan Rauch.

Mr Rauch said balancing free expression with safety concerns was a “hard problem” for universities. “Security can…very easily become an excuse for shutting down controversial ideas and speakers,” he told Times Higher Education during a visit to Melbourne.

“On the other hand, universities don’t have unlimited security budgets. It’s just darned expensive to have these people, and only those who can pay can play.”

After vowing not to accede to demands that they bar controversial speakers, vice-chancellors in  Australia and New Zealand have postponed or cancelled planned events on safety or logistical grounds. Mr Rauch, who visited both countries on invitation from the Free Speech Union’s local chapters, said activists in his native US were capitalising on university administrators’ health and safety obligations.

“It’s…very easy to make it effectively impossible for dissident voices to be heard. Just threatening violence is self-enforcing because someone says, ‘It’s going to require security, which we can’t afford.’ The threat of violence becomes an automatic censorship card.”

Now a senior fellow in the Brookings Institution thinktank, Mr Rauch has dedicated much of his life to marriage equality. “Free speech is really the main weapon that we’ve used. When I was born, homosexual Americans could not work for the government. We could not legally have intimate sexual relations. We could not socialise with each other in clubs or bars. We were denounced from the pulpit as a stench in God’s nostrils. We were officially diagnosed by the psychiatric profession as mentally ill. I could go on and on.

“Now I’m married to my husband, and it’s not even controversial. We did not have votes. We did not have public support. We did not have money. We didn’t have anything except our voices.”

He said US activists increasingly regarded free speech as “a stalking horse for right-of-centre views” and a “hammer…to bludgeon marginalised people”. But overreach in free speech was far less of a threat to minorities than attempts to shut it down, he argued.

“The idea that governments should not only allow but affirmatively protect speech and ideas that are immoral, blasphemous, heretical, wrong-headed or obnoxious is the most counter-intuitive and crazy-sounding idea of all time. It’s redeemed only by the fact that it’s also the most successful social idea of all time. It would be tragic if social justice advocates abandoned it.”

Nevertheless, free speech remained “very hard to defend”, as evidenced by the recent “ stunt ” in the US Congress when three university presidents were denounced “on the notion that allowing students to chant ‘from the river to the sea’ meant the university was endorsing genocide. It’s very easy to demagogue these issues, and it always will be.”

Mr Rauch said the relative peacefulness of the pro-Palestinian encampments in Antipodean universities suggested that Australia and New Zealand were less divided than the US. But he warned that American trends were “coming this way”, as academics steered clear of race and gender issues.

“People are complaining that you can only take one view of the issue, or you’ll be cancelled. That polarisation in the US has made everything harder to handle. It’s contributed to the bad blood and the strife that we’re seeing on college campuses.”

He said accusations that the encampment protesters were practising hatred illustrated the difficulty of delineating such a concept. “Hate speech is anything that someone wants to label as hateful. It’s completely a matter of opinion. That makes administering hate speech laws very difficult. It becomes very hard to figure out how to limit and define them.”

Mr Rauch’s 2021 book, The Constitution of Knowledge , argued in favour of objective truth and everybody’s right to help shape it. He said the notion that “lived experience” trumped all other forms of information was “fundamentally incompatible” with modern science.

“Lived experience is a form of data. What someone’s lived experience does not allow them to do is disqualify someone whose lived experience is different. Anyone is entitled to criticise anyone else and to correct anyone else. It’s that diversity of criticism which propels knowledge.”

Using academic expertise to gatekeep discussions was “another form of argument by disqualification”, he added. “There are multiple viewpoints and perspectives, and while they should not all be accorded equal weight necessarily, they also shouldn’t be just disqualified.

“Too frequently, what people really mean when they say ‘only experts should be heard’ is ‘only experts who agree with me’.”

A nurse honored for compassion is fired after referring to Gaza 'genocide' in speech

NEW YORK — (AP) — A nurse was fired by a New York City hospital after she referred to Israel's war in Gaza as a “genocide” during a speech accepting an award.

Labor and delivery nurse Hesen Jabr, who is Palestinian American, was being honored by NYU Langone Health for her compassion in caring for mothers who had lost babies when she drew a link between her work and the suffering of mothers in Gaza.

"It pains me to see the women from my country going through unimaginable losses themselves during the current genocide in Gaza," Jabr said, according to a video of the May 7 speech that she posted on social media . "This award is deeply personal to me for those reasons."

Jabr wrote on Instagram that she arrived at work on May 22 for her first shift back after receiving the award when she was summoned to a meeting with the hospital's president and vice president of nursing “to discuss how I ‘put others at risk’ and ‘ruined the ceremony’ and ‘offended people’ because a small part of my speech was a tribute towards the grieving mothers in my country.”

She wrote that after working most of her shift she was “dragged once again to an office” where she was read her termination letter and then escorted out of the building.

A spokesperson for NYU Langone, Steve Ritea, confirmed that Jabr was fired following her speech and said there had been “a previous incident as well.”

“Hesen Jabr was warned in December, following a previous incident, not to bring her views on this divisive and charged issue into the workplace,” Mr. Ritea said in a statement. “She instead chose not to heed that at a recent employee recognition event that was widely attended by her colleagues, some of whom were upset after her comments. As a result, Jabr is no longer an NYU Langone employee."

Ritea did not provide any details of the previous incident.

Jabr defended her speech in an interview with The New York Times and said talking about the war "was so relevant" given the nature of the award she had won.

“It was an award for bereavement; it was for grieving mothers,” she said.

Gaza's Ministry of Health says that more than 36,000 people have been killed in the territory during the war that started with the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel . Around 80% of Gaza's population of 2.3 million has been displaced and U.N. officials say parts of the territory are experiencing famine .

Critics say Israel's military campaign amounts to genocide, and the government of South Africa formally accused the country of genocide in January when it asked the United Nations' top court to order a halt to Israeli military operations in Gaza.

Israel has denied the genocide charge and told the International Court of Justice it is doing everything it can to protect Gaza's civilian population.

Jabr is not the first employee at the hospital, which was renamed from NYU Medical Center after a major donation from Republican Party donor and billionaire Kenneth Langone, to be fired over comments about the Mideast conflict.

A prominent researcher who directed the hospital's cancer center was fired after he posted anti-Hamas political cartoons including caricatures of Arab people. That researcher, biologist Benjamin Neel, has since filed suit against the hospital.

Jabr's firing also was not her first time in the spotlight. When she was an 11-year-old in Louisiana, the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on her behalf after she was forced to accept a Bible from the principal of her public school.

“This is not my first rodeo,” she told the Times.
