poster presentation nurses day

Powerful posters

Posters are an excellent way to disseminate your work, including research studies and quality improvement and evidence-based practice projects. Presenting a poster at a live or virtual local, regional, or national meeting helps you share information that can be used by your nursing colleagues to enhance their practice. In addition, posters can serve as a starting point for an article.

Like any writing effort, however, it’s important to plan and follow some key tips to ensure your poster stands out in the crowd.

Review guidelines

After your poster abstract is accepted, carefully review the conference’s guidelines, which will include size and how the poster will be displayed (for example, on a table, posted on a corkboard, and/or online). Size truly does matter. You’ll want to consider how text and visuals will fit in the allowed size so that the information can be easily absorbed.

Your organization may have internal resources for creating your poster, but if it doesn’t, don’t worry. Many online resources can help, and some are free to try. You also can turn to resources that outline how to create a poster in PowerPoint or InDesign from schools and hospitals, such as the University of Missouri ( libraryguides.missouri.edu/powerpoint_posters ) and UVA Health System ( guides.hsl.virginia.edu/faq-poster-powerpoint ). In addition, you can use Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint software. Excel is particularly useful for creating data charts.

Find out if your organization has any requirements for poster presentations. For example, the organization may have a logo or template slide for employees to use; the template slide may have colors that match the organization’s logo. More commonly, however, the conference’s organizing body has a template you can use.

Build your poster

Posters should be simple, easy to read, and contain graphics (for example, photos, graphs) to draw participants in. In a study of nurses (Siedlecki, 2015), esthetics—such as colors, font size, and layout symmetry—had the most influence on whether a conference participant would view a poster.

Sherman suggests that when creating a poster, it’s best to first make a rough layout on graph paper or with a computer software program to get an idea where to place the title, text, and any graphics, such as tables or illustrations. Create sections (usually columns) and decide on the headings for each.

Berg and Hicks suggest basing these headings based on the type of content. For example:

  • Research: background and problem, purpose, sample, methods, results, conclusions, and implications
  • Clinical: background/problem, purpose, summary of what is known, steps in developing the solution or strategy, outcomes, and implications
  • Projects: background/problem, purpose, sample and setting, strategies, results, and implications.

However, you don’t need to cover each item as a separate heading because it might get too wordy. Instead, focus on the key points of what you did and your results. Give particular attention to the title, since that’s what participants will scan to decide if they want to read further. Succinctly state what the poster is about and use upper and lower case, rather than all capital letters, which is harder to read.

Edit your text to ensure it’s as concise and clear as possible. Most posters have too much text.

Follow the tips

Here are some other ways to make your poster stand out:

  • Use bullet points instead of a lot of solid text.
  • Keep a consistent font type throughout. Redulla notes that popular fonts include Times New Roman, Rockwell, Georgia, and Baskerville.
  • Consider size. Recommendations vary, but Berg and Hicks suggest that the title be readable 15 to 20 feet away, with most of the text readable from 5 to 6 feet.
  • Use cool colors (blue, green) rather than than warm (red, orange, yellow) ones. Remember that some attendees who are colorblind can’t distinguish between red and green so use caution when creating items such as pie charts with colors for each section of data.
  • Consider adding a few images or icons to gain viewers’ attention and highlight key points. Check out online sources such as the Noun Project (thenounproject.com) and Vector Stock (vectorstock.com), but be sure to obtain permission if images have a copyright.
  • Don’t over-pack your poster. Long and Beck recommend breaking the poster into 40% graphics, 30% text, and 30% white space, and Rossi and colleagues recommend that you keep the word count to about 150 to 250 words, with no more than two to three graphs. These are simply guidelines, the bottom line is that you don’t want to completely fill the poster with text and images, which will drive readers away, not toward, your poster.
  • Include your contact information for those who would like more information. You also may want to create a QR code (qrcode-monkey.com) to make it easy for attendees to obtain a copy of your poster.

Test your poster out with colleagues so you can get feedback about clarity and readability. Redulla created a checklist that you also might find helpful.

Pack and present

When traveling with your poster, avoid checking it with your luggage. It’s better to hand carry on the plane. Allow plenty of time to set up your poster at the conference venue. Take extra pushpins and some tape in case provided supplies aren’t adequate. For eposters, follow submission guidelines.

For onsite conferences, you’ll likely be asked to stand at your poster at certain times to answer questions. Dress professionally and position yourself to the side so you don’t block your poster. Provide a few highlights of your work to those who stop to talk, but don’t immediately inundate them with excessive information. Instead, use open-ended questions to determine the level of detail they’re seeking. Remember to thank them for their interest.

For eposters and virtual conferences, you also may be asked to be available at a set time to answer questions. The same basic rules apply—dress professionally, tailor information to the individual, and end with a thank you. In some cases, you may be asked to provide a short audio clip that describes your poster.

Opportunities…

Posters provide an excellent way not only to build your professional network, but also to begin writing for publication. After you write your poster, you’ll be ready to write a manuscript based on the poster.

Icn reveal international nurses day 2024 theme.

Posted on January 22, 2024 |

The ICN (International Council of Nurses) have announced the theme for International Nurses Day (IND) 2024 – Our Nurses. Our Future. The economic power of care. The theme aims to highlight “economic power of care which creates healthy people and societies and drives healthy economies”.

The annual celebration of nurses, which takes places on 12 May (Florence Nightingale’s birthday) and has a theme elected by the ICN – a coalition of over 130 national nursing associations around the world, representing over 28 million nurses working worldwide.

ICN President, Dr Pamela Cipriano, expressed these thoughts on this year’s theme:

“Despite being the backbone of health care, nursing often faces financial constraints and societal undervaluation.”

She also said: “We believe now is the time for a shift in perspective. We have seen time and again how financial crises often lead to budgetary restrictions in health care, typically at the expense of nursing services. This reductionist approach overlooks the substantial and often underemphasized economic value that nursing contributes to health care and society as a whole.”

Dr Cipriano felt that many people, including policymakers, health care administrators, and the general public are often unaware or misinformed about the benefits of adequate funding in nursing. She indicated that lessons had been learnt following the -19 pandemic and that now is the right time to advocate for a “shift in perspective and policy.”

The INC will release a special report on the economic power of care on 12 May 2024. They also appealed for people to promote the power of nursing by sharing and posting the IND logo (available on their website) using the hashtags #IND2024 and #OurNursesOurFuture

Recap TechMed Research Day Empowering future innovators

On Thursday 27 June 2024, the TechMed Centre organised its third Research Day in the TechMed Centre of the University of Twente. Scientific Director Prof. Dr. Maroeska Rovers about this day: “I thoroughly enjoyed our Research Day. This event aims to empower future innovators and foster interdisciplinary research. Meeting so many talented researchers from each of our faculties was truly inspiring. The TechMed Research Day provides a unique opportunity to learn from one another and to encourage collaboration within our vibrant community.”

Dare to step out of your comfort zone

The TechMed Research Day began with an inspiring keynote by Dr. Ir. Abeje Y. Mersha, an expert in robotics and AI from Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Known for his work in autonomous unmanned systems, Abeje shared insights from his journey through the Dutch academic and cultural landscape. He described his role as a bridge builder, connecting scientific research with business practices, especially for SMEs. "Our research group 'Smart Mechatronics and Robotics' aims to address pressing societal problems through applied research, and has grown to more than 40 employees over the past decade."

Abeje also gave us a glimpse into his home country, Ethiopia, enriching his presentation with cultural and personal anecdotes. "The reason I came to the Netherlands? It was because I knew many players on the Dutch soccer team. So that's how it can go! I have lived in the Netherlands for about 16 years and have learned to ride a bicycle well," he shared with a smile.

His advice to the TechMed Centre community, especially expats, was clear: "Get out of your UT bubble, be open, learn Dutch and have fun! This will give you many more opportunities." His message emphasized the importance of cultural integration and continuous learning for professional and personal growth.

Moderated poster tour and poster gallery, oral presentations, sandpit session

Throughout the day, participants could attend six parallel sessions with presentations by TechMed researchers and four moderated poster tours, all prepared by PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and master students doing their theses. One of the poster tours also included a contribution from a participating student team in the SensUs competition. Two postdocs and two assistant professors presented their research (plans) in a sandpit session where they received feedback on various aspects of building their future research lines.

Awards during the TechMed Research Day

Researchers who prepared a poster (34) or oral presentation (30) had the opportunity to win an award. The winners of the best three poster presentations and the best three oral presentations received a TechMed Centre Sweater and a voucher for the TechMed Event where they will be allowed to present their research in the TechMed Talent Talks session. These six researchers also gave their presentation and poster pitch again in the last plenary session of the day.

The three winners of the poster presentations:

  • Jelle Plomp (TNW/M3i) |  Imaging Behind the Plaque
  • Thomas Keizers (EEMCS/BSS) | A pipeline for individualized whole head DBS simulations
  • Kimberly Brock (TNW/DBE) |  Thiol-mediated coupling chemistry as a crosslinking method to prepare dynamic, self-healing hydrogels

The three winners of the oral presentations:

  • Linda ten Klooster (EEMCS/MIA) |  AI-accelerated prediction of optimal implant alignment in total knee arthroplasty
  • Tom Niessink (TNW/AST) | Machine learning techniques for the evaluation of raman spectra to diagnose arthritis in a point-of-care setting
  • Jana Hecking (TNW/AST) | Mini-mini-hearts - developing a medium-throughput engineered cardiac chamber platform using HPSCS

Pardis Farjam (ET/BDDP) won the special award ‘Valorisation potential, creating impact with the new business', awarded by Esther Rodijk of NovelT, the KTO of the UT.

In addition, to stimulate lively discussion after the oral presentations and to show that asking questions is not as daunting as some might think, six 'Discussion Incentive Prizes' were awarded to the young researcher who participated most actively in the discussion in that session.

Remke Burie, managing director of the TechMed Centre, thanked everyone for their presence and the inspiring energy the young and excellent talent brought today. He said, "As we learned from Abeja this morning, stepping out of our bubble is very good. I'm glad we mixed presentations and posters today so we could learn from other disciplines and each other."

Closing Research Day

Subsequently, the audience was captivated by a lively pub quiz, testing everyone's knowledge about the TechMed Centre, their colleagues and the Medtech ecosystem, and general knowledge such as the Olympic games and music. After an exciting competition, team 'O nsportief ' emerged as the winner and was awarded a coupon for ice cream.

The TechMed Research Day 2024 was again a very successful and inspiring event. Participants did gain valuable insight into the latest developments in medical technology, offered opportunities for interaction and networking, and learned how TechMed can help them with their research. With more than 200 participants, the day was well attended by students, PhD candidates, researchers, and support staff.

We look forward to the next edition of this event! And of course, we hope to see you at our yearly  TechMed Event 2024 , which will take place on 6 November 2024 during the MedTech Twente Week. The theme of the TechMed Event 2024 is ‘Bridging past and future: five years of medtech advancements and beyond.’
