This thesis integrates insights from linguistics and rhetoric/ composition studies to create and test the effectiveness of a writing guide, designed for independent use by composition students, that is aimed at improving the global text quality of argumentative essays by helping students consider the “rhetorical situation” (Bitzer 1968) as a communicative context that motivates the deployment of features of well-formed written discourse (Berman 2008). The guide attempts to make pedagogical use of Berman’s descriptive framework of facets of discourse—global level principles, categories of referential content […] and overall discourse stance” which stem from a large scale cross-linguistic research project on the development of discourse abilities (Berman 2008: 735). The student writing guide, created by building this discourse framework upon the groundwork of rhetoric and composition theory, was tested for its effectiveness to improve drafts of writing by using online data collection methods. A group of advanced-placed ELL students wrote first drafts of argumentative essays. After reading and understanding the writing guide, participants then used it to write second drafts by revising their first drafts. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed to ascertain the extent to which the second drafts showed improvement in global text quality. While most of the second drafts showed little change in their levels of global text quality, all of the revised drafts indicated an increase in the usage of discourse features involved in global text quality and rhetorical effectiveness. Despite minor difficulties participants had with some the content of the guide, participants overall understood and were able to use the writing guide to revise their drafts and imagine a communicative context (rhetorical situation) for their written discourse.

I love this app

Hello Freenotes team, thank you so much for making a free alternative to other paid notes apps such as notability. The features are amazing, and I can make clear and concise notes. You have truly made my studying workflow better. Some suggestions that I think would help me personally are: -Allow the density of dotted lines to be modified. When I want to make dotted lines using the pen tool, the dotted lines have a certain, unchangeable space in between them. It is good for representing bigger distances, but it is difficult to make a smaller dotted line. Also, adding dashes along with dots would be great 👍 -Allow a user to reference a selection: Allow “reference points” to be made, where you could place a small dot, or really anything to signify a reference point has been made. You can then make a selection of text later in the notes, and set it to when clicked, direct the user to the reference point. This would help me create definitions in the lower half of my notebook, and reference them whenever I please. Additionally, this could be made better by creating a table of all reference points, so you could easily reference a place multiple times. Like, when you select something, a table comes up of all the reference points, and you can choose one. This app is amazing, keep it up 😁

FreeNotes Review

Love the app, thank you so much for making this app and not requiring fees for any features. The best thing about FreeNotes is that it’s free to use, not having to worry about limited amounts of notebooks and features. I’ve been having to switch between Noteful and CollaNote to take notes, since CollaNotes tools aren’t as nice as the tools in Noteful, and there was limited notebooks in Noteful. Now I can finally use this app for everything, thank goodness. The features are also The design of the user interface is very nice and clean (very neat), great job on the design. I was so surprised when I first double tapped with 2 fingers and it does the undo for me automatically! Love this feature since very few note taking apps have this feature, and I rely on this so much for undoing. ***The only criticism I have is the “Fitting Figure” feature. This feature does not work very well. Sometimes when I draw squares, it snaps in to circles instead. Other times when I draw squares, it does not snap into perfect squares at all, so this feature works like 50% of the time for me. Also, it would be nice if there’s an option to resize the “snapped squares” manually with lasso tool so that the dimensions/sides of the squares can be manipulated into rectangles like in Noteful

Astonishing

This app is absolutely astonishing, comparable if not better than paid Notes apps, and I thank the developer behind it for the fact that it is 100% free to use. This is my first app review ever, but I had to say something, because there’s a part of me that feels this app can’t even be real. I was looking for a catch. A subscription, a paywall, limited features, clunky design— NONE of these things are part of this app. Insane. The app's layout and user interfaces are very smooth. I’m hoping that the app will be around for a long time. Lastly, I wanted to request a feature that seems arbitrary, but would be really handy— splitting a notebook by bookmarks! Imagine if you had a 100 page pdf and you wanted to split it into separate smaller notebooks— I think it would be cool if you could do so according to where you've placed bookmarks. Even without this very niche feature idea, this app is amazing, and I recommend anyone who crosses upon this review to download it even if you don’t think you need it.
