Heading 3,h3
...
Heading 5,h5
Spacing is adjusted before and after the paragraph so you don't have to press the Return key.
Note: Word has many default styles that can't be deleted. To avoid confusion from thesis-specific styles and Word's default ones, look for a comma after the name of thesis styles (e.g., Heading1,h1).
See specific instructions for your version of Word:
If you don't like the way a style is defined, you can easily modify it!
Tip: Want to change the font type in the entire thesis? Modify the " Normal " style.
If your document suddenly loses styles from the template, you can readd them without worry!
The thesis template is designed for double-sided printing, so you need to insert an Odd Section Break at the end of each chapter. This will ensure the next chapter falls on the right side (or odd page) of the document. Odd section breaks should also occur at the end of each section in the front matter.
Note: Have you converted the thesis template to single-sided? If so, you need to use Next page breaks instead of Odd.
See specific instructions for your version of Word: 2016 & newer (Mac); 2013 & newer (Win)
Multiple consecutive section breaks will create extra blank pages in your thesis. Delete them this way:
Note: If that doesn't work, go to the View menu > Outline. Click on the section break to highlight it, and delete it.
The Table of Contents, List of Figures, and List of Tables will automatically populate based on the styles you apply to certain text like chapter titles, figure titles, and table titles. Periodically, you will need to update the Table of Contents and other tables so it will populate this information.
If you want to add a new table of contents, follow these steps, which use a table of schemes as an example.
There are specific pagination rules you must follow, all of which are outlined in the Senior Handbook. Some important ones to keep in mind:
Inserting images is more than a simple copy and paste. Follow these guidelines:
How to leave space for a large figure
Sometimes you may need to insert a figure that takes up an entire page. To do this without causing any pagination errors, follow these instructions:
There are a number of ways to insert tables into your thesis.
In order to insert a footnote in your thesis, follow these instructions:
Footnote text should be in the "Footnote Text" style. The number within the footnote, as well as the in-paragraph reference number, should be in the "Footnote Reference" style. Footnotes should automatically be in the appropriate styles, but if you encounter any problems with your footnotes, checking the style is a good first step.
If your footnote numbering gets out of order, click on "insert" in the top menu bar, select "Footnote...", select "Convert...", and then "Convert all footnotes to endnotes" and select OK. Don't hit "Insert", instead hit "Convert..." again, and this time select "Convert all endnotes to footnotes" and select OK. Once that is done, select "close".
Some of the sections are optional, such Acknowledgments and Preface. The trick is to delete the text and the corresponding section break or you'll end up with multiple blank pages.
Thesis needs to be formatted with mirror margins, here's how to do it (and see screenshots included).
When writing a thesis in another sort of document (e.g. Google Docs, LibreOffice, etc), you'll have to eventually transfer this into the Reed-provided templates. However, the formatting on your documents might interfere with the Word template
Here is how to copy and paste from Google Docs:
Formatting the thesis to be single-sided (note: this is not the same as printing single-sided).
Though rotating a page in Word may seem like the right thing to do, DON'T DO IT. Instead, leave these pages in a separate document; then insert them by hand after printing. It's OK to display no page numbers on these pages, but they still must be counted in the pagination. Insert a one blank page (using Insert > Break > Page Break) for each manually inserted page.
Here are four different methods for inserting a properly formatted, good quality version of a long excel table!

If the quality of the image doesn't need to be extremely detailed, you can try this fourth method with Word :
Here's how to add them back:
For seniors writing their theses using multiple languages, the line spacing may be inconsistent, especially if the body is copied and pasted from another document into the template. This can be fixed by selecting the paragraph(s) and clicking "body, b" in the Styles Pane, or by changing the font of the non-Latin characters to the ones listed below. For some languages that use non-Latin characters (e.g. Greek, Russian), simply switching the language on your computer's keyboard input (not Word) between English and the other language will generally preserve the correct line spacing.

The end is in sight! You’ve drafted your individual thesis chapters and now it’s time to combine them into a single thesis master document. Follow our easy step-by-step instructions to get your thesis submission-ready.
Lauren has a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Dundee .
Wow – your thesis is really coming along. First, you created an outline to help you organize your chapters. Second, you made a Table of Contents and learned how to insert captions and how to cross-reference within the document.
Now it’s time to combine your chapters into a single thesis master document; this allows you either to work on the whole thesis at once or to concentrate on individual chapters.
When putting together a thesis, it is useful to keep the chapters in separate documents because it keeps the files smaller. This means they will open and close faster, and if something goes wrong (which hopefully it won’t, but it’s better to plan for the worst) there’s less to lose.
You also won’t have to scroll through pages and pages of introduction when you only want to make a slight amendment to a method! With a thesis master document, you can work on each of the chapters separately, or have them all open together in the same document depending on what you need to do.
But eventually, you will have to put it all together.
Beware: Once you have linked files to the master document, you can’t change the file’s name or the file’s location or the master document won’t be able to find it! I stored all my thesis files in a folder in my dropbox account – this saved me having to update backup copies every other week and meant I wasn’t moving the documents around.
Make sure you have an up-to-date backup of the individual files , as sometimes creating the master document can go a bit wrong, and you don’t want to lose a chapter or two.
Thesis master documents can be a little tricky to get used to and take some playing around with to get the hang of. Before you get started setting up your thesis master document, try linking a few smaller files together and get used to manipulating them in Word – think of it like an artist doing a rough sketch before a masterpiece!
To create the master document:
1. Open a new word file
2. Go to the Outlining tool
3. In the master document options, select “ Show document ”
This will create the option to “Create” or “Insert” files into the master document.
4. Click on “ Insert ” and add in your chapter files, which will appear as file path links with the normal format (depending on where you saved them) “C:\Users\…” followed by the name of the computer you’re saving on, the location, the folder, etc.
5. Hit “ Expand Subdocuments ” to get a look at the content of the chapters rather than just the file paths. This gives you a look at the thesis as a whole and a chance to update your table of contents, list of figures, etc.
Don’t forget to update your table of contents, list of figures, and list of tables when you create your thesis master document. At this point, it’s important to do a snag check. We’ve all had that document where it ends up saved as “final-v5-final_update_v2” because we kept noticing minor errors after we thought it was final and had to keep going back to it.
Remember that this document is HUGE, and while you’re probably up against a deadline, you need to take that half an hour to scroll through the whole document and find the bits that have gone rogue:
Once you have your final thesis ready to go, you can add the cover page and page numbering, then expand your subdocuments, save the entire file as a PDF (to stop things moving about) and print!
Come back for the final article in this series in which I discuss cover pages, page numbering, and some time-saving tips for using Word for thesis writing.

Scientific research is a constant battle against time. Whether it is your Masters, PhD or Postdoc, you always feel the pressure to generate data for external validation. For that, you need to spend your time on the bench and not at the desk, but that can be hard. Unfortunately, non-laboratory tasks occupy a large segment…
Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) remains the cornerstone of biological sequence analysis. When users have one or few queries, the data are easy to interpret based on the graphical output that the search provides. However, when you have to analyze hundreds or a few thousand queries, running graphical outputs can be computationally intensive, difficult…
What did we do before the internet? And where would we be without handy online molecular biology tools? Apparently in the ‘olden days’ doing a simple gene or protein alignment required programs that used dynamic programming algorithms such as the Needleman-Wunsch and Smith-Waterman algorithms. These required long processing times and the use of supercomputers or…
Be very careful with Dropbox or similar online storage systems. These are technically no backups. The reason is simple: The moment you do a change on the folder which has been linked to the Dropbox, it will be propagated to the Dropboxsystem. So if you manage to produce a corrupt version of one of your thesis files, this will be in your online storage before you will be able to prevent it and replace your last working version there. I have seen dramas here…
To avoid this, create an independent backup (not something you work on) which is on a USB stick, or a different folder which syncs with Dropbox. This way you are relatively safe of this work errors. It is more work by hand though, but you have to know how much your thesis means to you.
This is not true anymore. Dropbox has file version history that goes back to 30 days where you can recover an uncorrupted version . https://www.dropbox.com/en/help/11

Two travel bloggers tried dressing up as Elvis Presley on a recent trip to Las Vegas in a bid to score free flight upgrades.
British couple Ryan and Jade, who host the YouTube series Live The Dash , were flying Virgin Atlantic from Manchester, England to Sin City when they tried the travel hack.
“When we heard a rumor that Elvis gets free upgrades on flights to Vegas we had NO CHOICE but to put it to the test,” Jade shared in an Instagram post.
The couple arrived at the airport decked out in Elvis regalia clad in white jumpsuits and shades.
Ryan even rocked an Elvis wig in a bid to be bumped up to first class.
In a video documenting their upgrade attempt, Ryan can be seen approaching the airport check-in desk and saying: “We have some premium economy tickets and we’re hoping that because we’ve dressed as Elvis Presley they’re going to bump us up to upper class.”
Jade had high hopes about their plan.
“It’s gone down amazingly,” Jade said in the vlog . “People are loving our outfits. People are walking past and taking pictures, they’re asking if we’re going to Vegas, and they’re making jokes about Elvis it’s making me feel so positive about a flight upgrade and also the journey that we’ve got ahead.”
However, despite their best efforts and high fashion, the couple were stuck with the economy seats they originally bought, though they did snag a complimentary Virgin Redhead cocktail.
And, later in the flight, they were allowed into the upper class section of the plane to temporarily sit in a plush booth.
“This is the sort of luxuries that upper class get… and Elvis,” Ryan declared.
“The main thing that I’ve learned is that you should just wear Elvis outfits on every flight that you go on because you never know what might happen,” Jade chimed in.
