What is self-management? (7 skills to improve it)

Alicia Raeburn contributor headshot

Self-management is your ability to regulate behaviors, thoughts, and emotions in a way that better serves you and your work. Learn the 7 most important self-management skills to become a better leader.

It’s certainly not easy, but self-management can be learned. And it’s worth doing—as you improve your self-management skills, you’ll naturally grow as a leader. From the top project management skills to your own personal development, we’ll go over what self-management is and the seven soft skills to develop it.

Anatomy of Work Special Report: The unexplored link between impostor syndrome and burnout

Burnout and impostor syndrome have historically been studied as two separate phenomena. In this report, we connect the dots to help leaders slow burnout and increase employee retention.

What is self-management?

Self-management is your ability to regulate your behaviors, thoughts, and emotions in a productive way. This means excelling in both personal and professional responsibilities for the benefit of yourself and your team.

[Inline illustration] What is self-management? (Infographic)

Effective self-management leads to better emotional intelligence by supporting your self-awareness and well being. This means staying on top of social cues and respecting your own personal needs.

Self-management is an important leadership quality that doesn’t always come naturally, but with the right tools and practice, you can develop. Let’s dive into the top seven self-management skills to develop.

What are the 7 self-management skills?

Developing self-management skills requires a certain level of self-awareness—you need to know yourself before you can regulate yourself. Start slow and embrace the process, remembering that these skills are ongoing.

Skill 1. Time management

Time management is when you control how you use your time. This means prioritizing your most important tasks first and managing your daily to-do list . A leader who has good time management skills can manage their time effectively without the need for external help.

Having good time management skills can help you stay engaged and avoid procrastination . As a leader, time management allows you enough time to both stay on top of your own work and empower others to do the same.

Skill 2. Self motivation

Self motivation is your ability to get motivated and proactively accomplish daily tasks. It takes a certain level of personal responsibility, but practicing self motivation can help you become more self-aware and prioritize what's important to you.

[Inline illustration] Self motivation (Abstract)

This is similar to intrinsic motivation , which is motivation that comes from within. Like self motivation, intrinsic motivation stems from a variety of personal factors. For example, your internal motivator for volunteering could be that it makes you feel fulfilled. External motivators, on the other hand, are influenced by factors outside yourself. For example, working faster because you’re scared of the repercussions if you work slower.

Enjoying the work you do is an important part of staying motivated and engaged throughout your workday. Plus, liking the work you do can help you inspire your team to do their very best. To practice internal motivation, work towards goals that excite you and fuel your sense of purpose.

Skill 3. Stress management

Leaders often deal with stress, but to be good at self-management you need to embody healthy stress management. Without stress management, you can suffer from overwork and, eventually, burnout .

Leaders with good stress management skills approach work in a focused manner by connecting their initiatives to larger goals. When you know which task is most important and how project deliverables are tied to team goals, you can better prioritize work and will likely feel more fulfilled doing it. Engaging with your work in this way is a form of self-care, and it can help reduce your stress levels and keep you level headed.

Skill 4. Adaptability

Being adaptable means you have the confidence and ability to pivot when changes arise. This is especially important for leaders who work in a fast-paced environment where project changes occur often.

For example, imagine a new project comes up that’s a higher priority than the one you’ve been working on for the last couple of weeks. Instead of becoming stressed or frustrated, you can adapt to this change and move forward with openness and curiosity. This is an important skill to have to maintain flexibility.

While being adaptable may be uncomfortable at times, it can make you a great leader as you have the ability to tackle anything that comes your way.  It also empowers your team to do the same.

Skill 5. Decision making

To be effective, it’s essential for leaders to develop decision-making skills that reduce confusion and increase team empowerment. Problem solving and addressing issues can help you grow your decision-making skills.

Like all the skills we’ve looked at so far, decision making is something you can learn. Start by sharpening your critical thinking skills and learning how to analyze key information when problems arise. And use data-driven decision making to ensure your actions come from data rather than guesswork, so fewer issues will arise down the road.

Skill 6. Goal alignment

Setting goals means you prioritize the most important projects that have the highest impact on your business.

This means being able to see the bigger picture and knowing what’s best for your team members and organization. In the long run, this will generate better results and boost team morale .

Goal alignment consists of three main skills:

Goal setting. When goal setting, be sure to identify current pain points, forecast growth objectives, and analyze your current resource allocation plans —all of which can help you set informed goals. Use the SMART goals framework to make sure your goal is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound.

Goal communication. Not only does this involve managing your team’s goals, but it always involves aligning them to your organization’s overall goals. That way,  your team members understand how their work ladders up to larger objectives. This requires transparent communication and aligned teamwork .

Goal tracking. Not only is it important to set and communicate goals, but it’s also important to track them. This is critical for connecting daily work to larger goals and seeing how your team is progressing over time.

Skill 7. Personal development

Personal development is key for all team members, but especially for leaders. In order to build your team’s knowledge, you first need to build your own.  This means taking the time to attend workshops, take courses, and connect with industry experts to develop your management skills.

This means taking the time to attend workshops, take courses, and connect with industry experts—all of which can help you develop your management skills.

By continuing to develop your skills, you can empower your team to do the same. Not only does this mean individual career development, but it also means growth for the good of the company.

Examples of self-management

Analyzing examples of self-management in the workplace can help you understand the skills you need to develop and embody healthy self-management.

These examples involve refining the way you see yourself in order to develop strong self-esteem. Here are some examples of self-management to better understand how you can empower yourself to be a better leader in the workplace:

Example 1: Setting goals and aligning them to the larger picture.

Team lead Daniela Vargas wants to increase returning customers by 10% this year in order to meet her organization’s growth goals. To start, she writes up a business case and schedules a meeting with the head of operations and product development. During that meeting, Daniela walks the department heads through her plan to rebrand an existing product line that hasn’t performed well in the past. The leaders agree to the plan and Daniela gets to work to develop a detailed work breakdown structure .

Example 2: Stress management and time allocation.

Ray Brooks starts his day by going through his daily to-do list. He notices he has a few tasks that need to be completed and an overdue task that he didn’t get to yesterday. He also gets a meeting invite for a new project that is flagged as a top priority. Instead of becoming overwhelmed and frustrated with the tasks on his plate, Ray goes to work to reorganize his schedule. Critically, Ray realizes that he can’t get everything done that day. To get his best work done, he prioritizes the new project meeting, since it’s a top priority. He then spends the rest of his day tackling his high priority tasks while maintaining the quality of his work. Instead of working all night, which Ray knows will stress him out and take away from his family time, he decides that his least important tasks will need to wait until the next day.

In both of these situations, the leader made rational decisions based on what was best for themselves and their teams. They were quick to make intelligent decisions while considering their own well-being in order to get good results.

Managing your behaviors and emotions

Managing your thoughts and behaviors can help you become better at self-management and, in turn, stronger as a leader. By streamlining your individual organizational systems, you’re proactively working towards becoming the best leader that you can be.

Learn additional ways to support your team with work management software. From increased productivity to team visibility, effectively managing your work doesn’t have to be challenging.

What is wrong with "checking for self-assignment" and what does it mean?

In Herb Sutter's book Exceptional C++ (1999) , he has words in item 10's solution:

"Exception-unsafe" and "poor design" go hand in hand. If a piece of code isn't exception-safe, that's generally okay and can simply be fixed. But if a piece of code cannot be made exception-safe because of its underlying design, that almost always is a signal of its poor design. Example 1: A function with two different responsibilities is difficult to make exception-safe. Example 2: A copy assignment operator that is written in such a way that it must check for self-assignment is probably not strongly exception-safe either

What does he mean by the term "check for self-assignment"?

Dave and AndreyT shows us exactly what "check for self-assignment" means. That's good. But the question is not over. Why does "check for self-assignment" hurts "exception safety"(according to Hurb Sutter)? If the caller tries to do self-assignment, that "check" works as if no assignment ever occurs. Does it really hurt?

[MEMO 1] In item 38 Object Identity later in Herb's book, he explains about self-assignment.

A question that's of greater importance in this case would be:, "what does it mean, when a you write function in a way, that requires you to check for self assignment".

To answer my rhetorical question: It means that a well-designed assignment operator should not need to check for self-assignment. Assigning an object to itself should work correctly (i.e. have the end-effect of "doing nothing") without performing an explicit check for self-assignment.

For example, if I wanted to implement a simplistic array class along the lines of

...and came up with the following implementation of the assignment operator...

That implementation would be considered "bad" since it obviously fails in case of self-assignment.

In order to "fix" this, you have two options;

  • Add an explicit self-assignment check
  • Follow a "check-less" approach:

The latter approach is better in a sense that it works correctly in self-assignment situations without making an explicit check. This implementation is far for perfect from a 'safety point of view' , it is here to illustrate the difference between "checked" and "check-less" approaches to handling self-assignment. The later check-less implementation can be written more elegantly through the well-known copy-and-swap idiom .

This does not mean that you should avoid explicit checks for self-assignment. Such check do make sense from the performance point of view: there's no point in carrying out a long sequence of operations just to end up "doing nothing" in the end. But in a well-designed assignment operator such checks should not be necessary from the correctness point of view.

  • 2 " Such check do make sense from the performance point of view " Rally, self assignment often happens in your programs? –  curiousguy Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 3:40
  • @curiousguy: Depends on the program, on the algorithm. If it allows self-assignment, so be it. Branchless code always look more elegant than branched one, meaning that I'd allow self-assigment to happen in such cases instead of trying to catch and prevent it on the outside. –  AnT stands with Russia Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 4:32
  • OK. I should admit, understanding that "check for self-assignment" statement needs a strong context. –  Jimm Chen Commented Apr 22, 2013 at 1:20
  • 1 I think when having an if (this != &rhs) return *this; at the top will often result in a more easily verifiable as correct function. In your third scenario I find myself checking for correctness. Working under the assumption that self-assignment isn't the case, it's often a lot easier to reason about the code. –  Aidiakapi Commented May 6, 2016 at 1:22
  • 3 @Aidiakapi - Don't you mean if (this == &rhs) return *this; –  John Bowers Commented May 13, 2016 at 20:48

From c++ core guide

This is obviously safe and apparently efficient. However , what if we do one self-assignment per million assignments ? That's about a million redundant tests (but since the answer is essentially always the same, the computer's branch predictor will guess right essentially every time). Consider:

Note: The code above only apply to classes without pointer, for classes with pointer point to dynamic memory. Please refer to Ant's answer.

  • 1 err, what if something is dynamically allocated? you have to check for self-assignment then as the other answers have made clear –  Aryaman Commented Aug 8, 2018 at 17:05
  • 3 What if something is not dynamically allocated? That's the different aspects of the same thing. –  camino Commented Aug 9, 2018 at 14:53
  • I agree, but you should make it clear that this is only a good optimization if nothing in your class is a pointer. –  Aryaman Commented Aug 9, 2018 at 17:55
  • I add a comment as you suggested. –  camino Commented Aug 9, 2018 at 21:11

Assigning an object to itself is a mistake but it shouldn't logically result in your class instance changing. If you manage to design a class where assigning to itself changes it, it's poorly designed.

David's user avatar

  • 7 @Mooing Duck Don't edit my answer so drastically. I don't even agree with what you added - it's the easy way out and almost always sub-optimal. Sometimes that's okay, sometimes it's not. Write your own answer. –  David Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 1:59
  • I figured the answer would be better if it also contained a sample of a good way to do things alongside the bad. Sorry if I stepped over the line. You're right that it's sub-optimal, but it's pretty standard, because it's fast enough, and hard to screw up. If you'd provide some bits on the right way to do assignment, I'd upvote. (doesn't have to be copy and swap, you're allowed to disagree with me) –  Mooing Duck Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 2:13
  • @MooingDuck I think almost all the time the right way is not to explicitly provide a copy assignment op. If you design your class well the default is all you'll ever want. –  David Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 2:25
  • That should be in the answer then. –  Mooing Duck Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 2:55

The general reason to check for self-assignment is because you destroy your own data before copying in the new one. This assignment operator structure is also not strongly exception safe.

As an addendum, it was determined that self-assignment does not benefit performance at all, because the comparison must run every time but self-assignment is extremely rare, and if it does occur, this is a logical error in your program (really). This means that over the course of the program, it's just a waste of cycles.

Puppy's user avatar

  • " this is a logical error in your program (really). " really, it isn't. –  curiousguy Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 3:36
  • Self-assignment is a meaningless statement. Meaningless statements are never intentionally written by programmers; and therefore always errors. –  Puppy Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 3:53
  • 4 No, self assignment should have no effect. It is not meaningless. –  curiousguy Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 4:21
  • Having no effect is by definition meaningless, as the program is identical before and after it's execution. –  Puppy Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 4:35
  • 12 Self-assignments aren't always obvious. It's totally reasonable to assume that many STL algorithms (partitioning, sorting and such) will do self-assignments on the elements. –  fredoverflow Commented Aug 18, 2012 at 7:59

Elon Musk and Donald Trump live-streamed their conversation on X.

Vice President Kamala Harris ‘ campaign team is taking aim at Donald Trump and Elon Musk after their live-streamed X interview, claiming the Republican hopeful’s agenda is for “self-obsessed rich guys who will sell out the middle class.”

Hollywood hits the windy city: roundup of stars traveling to chicago's dnc for concerts, events, elon musk mocked on late night shows over accusations of faking cyberattack during trump interview.

In between a series of attacks on the Democratic presidential candidate, where he called Harris “incompetent” and her campaign “a scam,” Trump, bizarrely, called Harris “beautiful” on the cover of  Time  magazine and likened her to his wife Melania. He also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as being at the “top of their game.” As of 6 a.m. PT on Tuesday when this story published, the post sharing the interview on Trump’s X account had more than 165 million views.

Harris campaign spokesperson Joseph Costello is now firing back on behalf of the Vice President following the interview, saying Trump’s extremism and “dangerous Project 2025 agenda” is a feature, not a glitch of his campaign, “which was on full display for those unlucky enough to listen in tonight during whatever that was on X.com.”

“Trump’s entire campaign is in service of people like Elon Musk and himself — self-obsessed rich guys who will sell out the middle class and who cannot run a livestream in the year 2024,” he added.

The Hollywood Reporter ‘s latest cover story focuses on the L.A. liberal moguls who are coming after Musk and the Silicon Valley billionaire boys club this election. A clash has ensued over just who each side wants in the White House this November, as one studio executive succinctly summed up Hollywood’s new battle cry: “Fuck these Trump-loving techies.”

Before the interview, Musk took some heat from the European Union . The EU’s commissioner for internal market, Frenchman Thierry Breton, had posted an open letter to the X founder and tech mogul on Monday asking that he censor his interview with Trump to avoid “the amplification of harmful content.” Breton said Musk, who bought the platform in 2022, has a legal obligation to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA) and fight the spread of misinformation. Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), was copied.

“As the relevant content is accessible to EU users and being amplified also in our jurisdiction, we cannot exclude potential spillovers in the EU,” Breton continued in his letter. Any “negative effect of illegal content” could lead the EU to take further action against X and Musk, using “our full toolbox, including by adopting interim measures, should it be warranted to protect EU citizens from harm.”

Musk replied to Breton’s letter with a meme that said: “Take a big step back and literally, fuck your own face!”

Trump returned to the app after having his account suspended following the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021, “due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” the company said at the time. When Musk took over, though, he reinstated Trump’s account.

Braves outfielder’s return could revive lackluster outfield play.

Atlanta Braves center fielder Michael Harris II is scheduled to return Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants. Harris has been sidelined due to a grade two hamstring strain sustained on June 14th. The injury occurred while he was running from first to third base after a single hit down the right field line by Ozzie Albies against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Michael Harris II Set to Return for Braves

In the absence of Harris, the Atlanta Braves have explored various options to fill the center field position. Jarred Kelenic initially showed promise as a potential solution, delivering a strong performance in June. During that month, he served as the leadoff batter and played center field, achieving a commendable .304 batting average. However, July proved to be a challenging month for Kelenic, as his batting average dropped significantly to .137. Consequently, it was determined that Kelenic would be better suited returning to a platoon split role.

Ramón Laureano has been given opportunities in center field without success. Triple-A players such as Eli White and Forrest Wall were also given chances to establish themselves in the center field. However, they did not achieve significant results. It is evident that the Atlanta Braves are pleased with the return of Michael Harris. When asked about his return, Harris expressed his excitement by stating, “It feels somewhat similar to the first day of school,” Harris said. “It feels as though I have not seen them in a considerable amount of time. It has been a while since I have been out there with them, and I am simply thrilled to return.”

Harris’s Rehab Assignment Shows Promise

Harris began his rehab assignment on August 6th in Triple-A Gwinnett, demonstrating remarkable performance. Over the course of six games with the Stripers, he accumulated 26 plate appearances, 10 hits, two home runs, and 13 total bases, hitting an impressive .435/.500/.565 to go along with a 1.065 OPS. These statistics are particularly noteworthy considering Harris’s absence from baseball activities for a significant period of one month and 22 days. Initially starting his rehab assignment as the designated hitter, he transitioned to playing center field after two games, signaling his readiness for a return to major league play.

Roster Moves with Harris’s Return

In light of Harris’s reinstatement from the 60-day injured list, the Braves have made several roster adjustments. Outfielder Eli White has been optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett, necessitating a corresponding move to accommodate the 40-man roster limit. Consequently, the Braves have designated right-handed pitcher Parker Dunshee for assignment. Dunshee made his MLB debut on August 8th against the Milwaukee Brewers, but after seven years in the minor leagues, the Braves have decided to part ways with him. This decision has surprised many fans, who expected Adam Duvall or Ramón Laureano to be assigned instead. While White offered valuable defensive skills and speed as a potential bench player, both Duvall and Laureano lack minor league options.

The #Braves today returned OF Michael Harris II from his rehabilitation assignment and reinstated him from the injured list, and optioned OF Eli White to Triple-A Gwinnett. Stability Being Brought Back In The Outfield

Harris returning to center field for the Braves is going to bring back a number of things they have been missing this season, including solid defense in the field and speed on the base paths. Manager Brian Snitker said there will be no restrictions when it comes to steal attempts for Harris. Snitker also said that Harris will be back to batting in the middle of the order. With the addition of Jorge Soler , he will be manning the lead-off and right field position. This should finally provide the stability the Braves outfield desperately needs. It seems only Jarred Kelenic will need the platoon split.

The Braves outfield has a collective 0.2 fWAR this season, according to FanGraphs. Ronald Acuña Jr. leads all Braves outfielders in the category for 2024, despite being out since May 26th with a left ACL tear . In terms of fWAR, the Braves are currently ahead of only the Miami Marlins and the 29-win Chicago White Sox. Stability and meaningful production are essential for the Braves to make a deep postseason run. The return of Harris should provide these elements and will be welcomed by fans when he rejoins the lineup on Wednesday night.
