10 Army Heroes and Their Extra Ordinary Tales of Bravery

T hey are men of steel, standing tall in the harshest of conditions. They disregard freezing cold temperatures and scorching heat to always remain brave, awake and devoted towards us.

They are all heroes, each and every one of them. But there are a few whose stories have become the stuff of legends, stories that deserve to be shared and told over and over again:

1. Captain Vikram Batra

army1

Born in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, Captain Vikram Batra of 13 J&K Rifles, is known as the hero of the Kargil war. He led one of the toughest war operations in Kashmir, and was also called Sher Shah (in the intercepted messages of the Pakistani army).

He was instrumental in recapturing Peak 5140, which is located at an altitude of 17,000 feet. During this mission, Batra was seriously injured but still managed to kill three enemy soldiers in close combat. After capturing Peak 5140, he went on yet another difficult mission to recapture Peak 4875 on July 7, 1999. Batra made a call to his father before he left and told him about the crucial mission. Hardly did he know that this would be his last call home.

It was one of the most difficult missions the Indian army attempted because the Pakistani forces were sitting above the peak at 16,000 feet and the climb gradient was 80 degrees. On their way up, one of Batra’s fellow officers was severely injured. Batra set out to save him. When a subedar tried to help him save the officer, Batra pushed him aside, saying, “You have children, step aside.” He saved his fellow soldier but was killed while clearing enemy positions. Batra’s last words were “Jai Mata Di.”

A famous quote by Batra is: “Either I will come back after hoisting the tricolour (Indian flag), or I will come back wrapped in it, but I will be back for sure.” He was honoured with the Param Vir Chakra.

Quick fact: The 2003 Hindi film LOC Kargil had a character based on Captain Batra, played by Abhishek Bachchan.

2. Major General Ian Cardozo

army2

Major General Ian Cardozo, who has many achievements to his name, will always be known for his immense courage in the 1971 war with Pakistan. He was, at the time, a young major with 5 Gorkha Rifles. During the war, he stepped on a landmine and severely injured his leg. When even the doctor could not cut his leg, Cardozo asked for a khukri (the Gorkha knife) and cut his own leg off, saying, “Now go and bury it!”

The incident did not deter Cardozo from going on to serve his country. Through sheer willpower and determination, he continued to perform his duties as a soldier and became the first disabled officer in the Indian Army to command an infantry battalion and a brigade. In spite of not being physically at par with other officers, he defeated many ‘two-legged’ soldiers to come first in many fitness tests during his stint in the army.

3. Brigadier Mohammad Usman

army3

Born in Bibipur, Uttar Pradesh, this man of steel joined the Indian army in 1934. During the Indo-Pakistan war of 1947/48, Brigadier Usman repulsed a fierce attack on Naushera and Jhangar, two highly strategic locations in Jammu and Kashmir, and was named by his fellow soldiers ‘The Lion of Naushera.’

At the time of the Partition, he was made the offer of becoming the Chief of the Pakistani Army but he chose to stay in India. He left the Baloch regiment of Pakistan and was inducted into the Dogra regiment in India. After the Battle of Naushera, where the Pakistanis suffered heavy casualties at his hands, the same country that had courted him to become the chief of the army, now went ahead and placed prize money of Rs. 50,000 on his head.

Brigadier Usman was not just a fierce soldier but also a compassionate man. He never got married and used to donate a large part of his salary to support poor children and pay for their education. This inspiring and exemplary officer of the Indian Army died on July 3, 1948, defending Jhangar. His last words were, “I am dying but let not the territory we were fighting for fall to the enemy.”

He was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously for his great courage and leadership.

4. Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav

army4

This brave soldier has the high honour of being the youngest recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. He received this award at the age of 19 for his actions on July 4,1999, during the Kargil war. Born in 1980 in Aurangabad Ahir village, Uttar Pradesh, Yadav showed immense courage during the war in 1999. He volunteered for the task of capturing three strategic bunkers on Tiger Hill, which were situated at the top of a vertical, snow-covered, 16,500 feet high cliff face.

He was climbing the high cliff with the help of a rope when the enemy bunker started rocket fire. Yadav was hit by three bullets in his groin and shoulder. Despite being severely injured, Yadav kept climbing and finished the remaining 60 feet to reach the top of the cliff. Though in immense pain, Yadav crawled to the first enemy bunker and lobbed a grenade, which killed four Pakistani soldiers and set back the enemy fire. This gave the rest of the Indian platoon the opportunity to climb up the cliff face.

However, this was not it. Yadav continued to fight and destroyed the second bunker too with the help of two fellow soldiers. In fact, he also engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy and killed four more Pakistani soldiers. By the time the rest of the Indian platoon arrived, Yadav had already neutralised the enemy attack. This gave Indian soldiers the upper hand and they managed to accomplish one of the toughest missions of the Kargil war – the capture of Tiger Hill.

During the second part of the fight, a few more bullets hit Yadav. Some say he was hit by 16 bullets, some say less, but he survived it all. Yadav’s heroic actions were portrayed in the film, Lakshya, by actor Hrithik Roshan.

5. Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat

Words fall short when it comes to telling this brave man’s story. A hero of the 1962 Indo-China war, Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the 4th Garhwal Rifles Infantry Regiment is the only soldier in the history of the Indian Army who has risen through the ranks after his death. He was ‘promoted’ to the rank of Major General 40 years after his death, and is still believed to ‘command’ troops guarding India’s eastern frontiers with China.

During the 1962 war, soldiers were ordered to vacate their posts as soon as possible due to heavy casualties against the Chinese at the Battle of Nuranang. But Jaswant did not leave his position and continued to fight even after the other soldiers had left.

Rawat was helped by two Monpa tribal girls named Sela and Nura. The trio set up weapons at separate points and maintained a volume of fire to make the Chinese believe they were facing a huge battalion. Rawat successfully managed to fool them for three days. But the Chinese found out about the set up through a man who used to supply rations to Rawat and the two girls. At this point, Rawat chose to shoot himself rather than be captured by the Chinese forces. The Chinese were so furious on learning that they had been fighting a single soldier all this time that they cut off Rawat’s head and carried it back to China.

The post that Rawat held to repulse the Chinese troops has been renamed Jaswant Garh in recognition of his courage. A small shrine to Rawat has also come up at the battle spot. All army personnel who pass by this route make sure to pay their respects to him here.

Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously.

6. Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal

army6

Born in Pune, 2nd Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal of the 17 Poona Horse regiment is yet another braveheart who died too young at the age of 21. He died in the Battle of Basantar during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, where his brave actions earned him the Param Vir Chakra posthumously.

Khetarpal showed immense courage and strong will when Pakistani armour, which was superior in strength, counterattacked at Jarpal, in the Shakargarh sector, in December, 1971. Though Khetarpal was in a different squadron, he rushed to help, moving towards the enemy, overrunning the defences with his tanks, and capturing Pakistani infantry and weapons.

When the commander of his troops was killed, Khetarpal continued to attack the enemy fiercely until the latter’s tanks started pulling back. Khetarpal even managed to destroy one of the withdrawing tanks.

But the enemy reformed their armour and prepared for a second attack. This time they targeted the sector held by Khetarpal. The attack was severe and swift. Khetarpal was wounded but managed to hit 10 enemy tanks. He was asked to abandon his tank but realised that if he left it the enemy would break through. He fought courageously and destroyed another enemy tank. But then his own tank received another hit, which resulted in the death of this courageous officer.

7. Major Somnath Sharma

army7

This brave soldier of Fourth Kumaon regiment sacrificed his life at the young age of 24. With his hand already in plaster from an injury sustained in a hockey game, Sharma insisted on being with his company in combat when they were airlifted to Srinagar on October 30, 1947 to fight Pakistani invaders.

On November 3, when Sharma’s company was on a patrol of Badgam village, it was approached by a tribal lashkar of 700 raiders from the direction of Gulmarg. The company was soon surrounded from three sides and endured heavy casualties from the ensuing heavy mortar bombardment. Realising that Srinagar and the airport would be vulnerable if they abandoned the battle at this point, Sharma ran from post to post, encouraging his men to fight in the face of an enemy that outnumbered them seven to one.

When heavy casualties adversely affected their firing power, Sharma, with his left hand in plaster, took to filling the magazines for the men operating light machine guns. While he was busy fighting, a mortar shell exploded on the ammunition near him, killing him instantly.

His last message to Brigade HQ, received a few moments before he was killed, was: “The enemy is only 50 yards from us. We are heavily outnumbered. We are under devastating fire. I shall not withdraw an inch but will fight to our last man and our last round.”

Major Somnath Sharma was the first recipient of the Param Vir Chakra. The citation on the award says, “His leadership, gallantry and tenacious defence were such that his men were inspired to fight the enemy by seven to one, six hours after this gallant officer had been killed.”

8. Naik Jadu Nath Singh

army8

Naik Jadu Nath Singh, the fourth recipient of the Param Vir Chakra, fought in Jammu and Kashmir in the Indo-Pak war of 1947/48. His presence of mind and bravery saved his post, not just once but thrice, from the enemy. On the crucial day of February 6, 1948, Singh was in command of a forward post at Taindhar. Nine men garrisoned the post.

The Pakistanis launched their attack in successive waves to take this post. At this juncture, Singh showed superb leadership and used his small force in such a manner that the enemy retreated in utter confusion. With four wounded men, he re-organised his force to face another onslaught. He did not give in despite being outnumbered.

When all his men, himself included, were wounded, he took over the Bren gun from the wounded gunner and continued to fight. The enemy were now on the walls of the post but Singh’s fire was so devastating that the post was saved for a second time.

Every one in his post was dead by now. The Pakistanis came in again for a third attack. Wounded and alone, Sharma charged out of his post with his sten gun firing, surprising the enemy and forcing it to flee back in confusion again. But two bullets caught Sharma in the head and chest and this gallant soldier died instantly.

9. Subedar Karam Singh

army9

Born in Sehna village in the Sangrur District of Punjab, Karam Singh was the first non-posthumous Param Vir Chakra awardee. Singh retired from the Indian Army as Honorary Captain in 1948 and died in 1993 at the age of 77. He is also the only Indian to win the highest medals of both the British and Indian governments.

Among his several brave acts, Karam Singh is best known for his courage on 13 October, 1948, when Pakistan decided to launch a brigade attack to retake Richhmar Gali in Kashmir. The firing was so furious that it destroyed almost all the bunkers in the Indian platoon. The communication with the commander was also cut off and Singh could not update his situation or ask for reinforcements.

He was left with just one choice – to fight the enemy with whatever little army and weapons he had. The attacks had left Karam Singh severely injured but nothing could deter his spirit. He refused to evacuate the post even when the enemy got very close. When enemy soldiers came even closer, Karam Singh jumped out of his trench and stabbed two intruders to death. His brave act demoralised the enemy so much that they broke off the attack.

10. Major Ramaswamy Parameswaran

army10

Born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, Parameswaran is yet another braveheart who died at the age of 41 in 1987, in India’s Sri Lanka operations. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, posthumously.

It was late night when Parameswaran was returning from search operations in Sri Lanka, when his column was suddenly attacked by a group of militants. He did not panic and showed great presence of mind by encircling the enemy from the rear and surprising them with an unexpected attack. During the hand-to-hand combat, a militant shot him in the chest. Undaunted, Major Parameswaran snatched the rifle from the militant and shot him dead.

Barely able to stand now, he continued giving orders to his men and inspired them to fight till his last breath. The Indians managed to kill five militants and recovered three rifles and two rocket launchers from the militants.

Essay on Indian Army

Essay on Indian Army: The Indian army is the bravest and second largest army in the world with a total of 1.23 million soldiers. The Ministry of Defence of the Government of India is the governing body for the Indian Armed Forces. Commanded by the President of India as the supreme commander and commanded by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), the Indian Army fulfils the aim of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.

General K.M. Cariappa, the first Indian commander-in-chief of the Indian Army, replaced British Commanding General Sir Francis Butcher and formed the Territorial Army in 1949, transforming the British Army into a national one.

From the date of replacement, the Indian Army didn’t look back. Whether in signing any pact with a country across the border or safeguarding the nation from internal or external threats, the Indian Army always marked success. It successfully maintained peace and security within the country’s frame.

Essay on Indian Army in 500+ words in English

The Indian Army is a forward-pushing force, embodied with the spirit of courage, discipline, and selfless service. With a rich history and a firm commitment to protecting the nation, the Indian Army holds a revered place in the hearts of citizens.

The soldiers in the Indian Army come from different parts of our diverse nation, representing its unity. They wear uniforms with pride, displaying not just their commitment but also the diverse weave of our country.

The Indian Army’s significance extends beyond borders and our everyday lives. Whether protecting us from external threats or assisting during natural disasters, the Indian Army is always there. Their bravery and selflessness inspire us and instil a sense of security.

Historical Significance

The roots of the Indian Army can be traced back to the British Indian Army, which played an essential role in various conflicts, including World War 1 and World War 2 .

The post-independence era marked the establishment of the Indian Army as the backbone of the country’s defence, safeguarding its borders and preserving its sovereignty.

Remarkable chapters in its history include the 1971 Indo-Pak War , which led to the creation of Bangladesh, and the Kargil War in 1999 , where the Army displayed exceptional courage in the face of adversity.

Organisational Structure

There are a total of 27 Regiments in the Indian Army. Popular regiments of the Indian Army are Rajputana Rifles, Dogra, Jat, Sikh and Bihar Regiment, Maratha Light Infantry and Gorkha Rifles. All these regiments are special in their respective fields.

From the infantry units stationed at the borders to the artillery units providing firepower, the harmonious collaboration of these components ensures the nation’s security. The hierarchical structure and extensive training programs reflect the dedication to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.

Modern Challenges and Adaptations

In the modern scenario, the Indian Army faces various challenges, ranging from traditional threats along the borders to unconventional warfare and counter-terrorism operations.

Embracing the need for modernization, the Army actively incorporates advanced technology, weaponry, and communication systems. Collaborations with international defence partners contribute to staying abreast of evolving military capabilities. Moreover, the Indian Army’s active participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions showcases its commitment to global security and stability.

Values and Sacrifices

At the heart of the Indian Army lie values that go beyond the battlefield. Discipline, integrity, and selfless service are ingrained in the importance of every soldier. The life of a soldier demands immeasurable sacrifices, often involving extended periods away from families in challenging terrains.

The seriousness of a soldier’s duty oath is illustrated in their ultimate sacrifice. These sacrifices can easily resonate nationwide, reminding us of the dedication and courage that define the Indian Army.

Humanitarian Contributions

While the primary role of the Indian Army is defence, its impact extends beyond borders. Actively engaged in disaster relief operations, the Army emerges as a lifeline during natural calamities. Whether rescuing people from flooded areas or providing medical assistance in remote regions, the humanitarian endeavours of the Army underscore its role as the nation’s protector, both in times of war and peace.

In conclusion, the Indian Army is not merely a military force; it represents national pride, resilience, and sacrifice. From the battlefields to peacekeeping missions and humanitarian efforts, the Army’s influence is profound and multifaceted.

As citizens, we must honour and respect the commitment of the brave men and women who serve in the Indian Army, ensuring that their legacy of valour and patriotism endures for generations to come.

We salute the Indian Army for their selfless service and commitment to our nation.

Life of Soldiers Essay

If I have to describe the life of soldiers in a single word; I would have described it as “patriotic”. Though, some of you would like to describe it as “tough” and some of you even as “risky”. In true sense, a soldier’s life is a collection of all the three. A soldier’s life is patriotic, because, s/he is overwhelmed with the thought of protecting the motherland, even at the cost of his/her own life; tough, as they have to stay away from family and friends for months, that too in some of the most arduous conditions; risky because they secure our borders and are under constant threat from infiltrators and terror outfits.

A soldier, apart from routine posting assignment, takes part in relief operations as well. In fact, when the situation slips out of control of local authorities, soldiers are the ones who are called first. Soldiers are well trained and equipped with vital equipments to deal with any natural or manmade disaster. Despite facing tough terrains and risking his/her life a solider has a more meaningful existence.

Soldiers have immense love for their nation. It is this love that encourages them to join this profession and serve their nation. The training they undergo to become a soldier refines and strengthens them.

Discipline is one of the most attractive qualities in a person. This is the first thing that the soldiers are taught in their training camps. If a person does not possess discipline, he cannot take on the responsibility of protecting his country.

Soldiers need to be on duty for most part of the year. They need to be away from their family and friends all this while. This is one of the most challenging parts of being a soldier. It can be emotionally disturbing.

Lack of proper supply of food in these areas makes the life of the soldiers even more difficult. However, they continue to fulfil their duty amid all these difficulties.

  • Weather Adversities

Soldiers are also posted in areas with extreme weather conditions. They need to fight amid heavy rains, extreme cold and scorching sun. They need to fight their way through snow covered mountains and dense forests. They are required to be on the field day in and day out, guarding their country at all times. The adversity of weather can be a big challenge for them.

  • Lack of Bullet Proof Equipments

Soldiers are constantly exposed to bullets during wars. It is essential to provide them bullet proof clothes and shields. However, in many countries including India there is a dearth of bullet proof equipments. Fighting without these is a big challenge for the soldiers.

Thus, the life of soldiers is full of challenges. However, they do their best to overcome all the challenges and take it as their responsibility to guard their country and countrymen. They fulfill their responsibility with a smile on their faces.

Essay on Life of Soldiers – Duty of an Ideal Soldier – Essay 4 (500 words)

Soldiers are entrusted with the task of guarding the honour of their country. An ideal soldier keeps his country’s interests above his own. He is disciplined, determined and dedicated to serve his country and protect his countrymen at all times. His duty is of supreme importance to him.

Duty of an Ideal Soldier

The citizens of a country can live in peace as long as it has a strong army base that has soldiers who take it as their duty to:

  • Serve the Country Selflessly

There is no doubt about the fact that a person who decides to join the army loves his country dearly. He is well aware about the difficulties he may have to face during his journey as a soldier however he still decides to tread this path.

Soldiers need to undergo rigorous training for years in order to become capable of battling it out in the battleground. One of the first things a soldier is taught is to serve his country selflessly. No matter what the situation is, soldiers must think about the interest of their country before they think about that of their family or themselves. An ideal soldier does just this. Only someone who has the ability to put his personal interests aside and is willing to sacrifice everything for his country can be called an ideal soldier.

  • Protect Country’s Honour

The honour of the country and that of the national flag is of supreme importance for an ideal soldier. He can go to any extent to protect it. He is not scared to fight amid adversities to save the honour of his country and protect his countrymen. He would not even hesitate laying his life to protect the country’s honour. We are lucky to have an army full of such ideal soldiers. They have been truly inspiring for the soldiers to be as well as the general public.,

  • Ensure Peaceful Environment

An ideal soldier takes it as his responsibility to ensure a safe and peaceful environment in the country. Soldiers do not just guard the border and fight in the battle grounds during wars they are there to serve the citizens in different kinds of emergency situations. Be it a terrorist attack, flood or any other natural calamity or intense problem induced by unlawful activities, soldiers are called to handle almost every difficult situation. An ideal soldier never hesitates to render help in any situation. He gladly serves the citizens and ensures they live peacefully.

There had been numerous instances where in the army had been called to help in civilian matters or rescue operations. It is only because of the help rendered by them along with local authorities; the situations come under control.

  • Stay Vigilant

A soldier is always on duty whether he is at the battle field or not. The duty of an ideal soldier is to stay vigilant at all times.

The duty of an ideal soldier is to be there for his country. He is expected to serve his country selflessly and be ready to sacrifice his life for its honour. We salute such noble souls and look up to them for inspiration.

Long Essay on Life of Soldiers – Essay 5 (600 words)

We look up to the soldiers with pride as they are selfless beings who are always ready to protect their country’s honour. They stay away from their family and friends just to ensure their country is guarded at all times and that their countrymen can live in peace.

Epitome of Physical and Mental Strength

Soldiers are known for their physical and mental strength. They can be referred to as the epitome of mental and physical strength; they are well-built. The physical strength of a person is taken into consideration while taking him on board as a soldier. He is then trained rigorously to enhance it and prepare him to fight battles tirelessly.

The training camps help the soldiers to build physical strength. A soldier who is dedicated to serve his country continues to train himself to stay physically fit so as to do his best on the field.

Similarly, it is essential for a soldier to possess mental strength and have a good presence of mind. The screening determines the candidates’ mental strength. This is further developed and strengthened once they are selected. Being mentally strong is as important as the physical strength in order to emerge victorious in the battlefield.

Wars and Battlefields

Soldiers need to be ready for battling it out in the field at all times. There is always a possibility of war among different countries. Thus, the soldiers can be called to defend the country at any time. India had been attacked several times by its neighbouring countries. Our soldiers have proved their mettle in these wars. They have fought bravely and we are proud of them. Here are some of the wars fought by the Indian soldiers:

  • Indo China War 1962: Also known as the Sino-Indian War, this war was fought between India and China on the pretext of a disputed Himalayan border. However, this was not the only reason why China attacked India. There were many other issues too. During this war, the soldiers fought in harsh climatic conditions on the mountains. The war continued for almost a month and China emerged winner.
  • Indo Pak War of 1965: India and Pakistan have always been at loggerheads. While India tries to maintain peace and use peaceful means to settle any kind of issue between the two countries, Pakistan is known for using force and attacking our country. It called for a war with India for the first time in 1965. The war continued for seventeen days and resulted in thousands of causalities. It was called off only after the intervention of USA and Soviet Union.
  • Indo Pak War of 1971: Pakistan attacked the Indian border but the Indian army was quick to respond to it. Our soldiers fought bravely and won the battle after fighting for almost two weeks. However, numerous people were killed and several of them were injured on both the sides during this war. Pakistan especially suffered huge losses during this war. It lost a major chunk of its army, navy and air force personnel.
  • Kargil War: The war was fought between India and Pakistan in the year 1999. It started when the Pakistani troops crossed the Line of Control and crept into India’s Kargil district. Indian soldiers acted bravely and wisely during this war. Their mental and physical strength helped India get back the region encroached by the Pakistani military troops. Pakistani military was shaken badly after this war as it suffered a major defeat.

We are proud of our soldiers and are grateful to them for ensuring a peaceful environment. We respect them with all our heart and salute them for their heroic acts. They are the true heroes.

Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat – Story Of A Man Who Fought Till His Last Breath.

rifleman jaswant singh rawat

In front of his eyes, he saw his companions falling on the ground but he didn’t give up and swear to fight till his last breath. As per the other soldiers there, he fought with the Chinese soldiers for 3 days all by himself, giving them a tough time and killing nearly 300 enemy soldiers. The heart of the enemies was filled with fear as this single man was equal to a battalion for them. Jaswant Singh was not only a die-hard soldier but also a sharply witted personality. He formed a strategy to keep the Chinese army under an illusion. It is believed, with the help of two girls he set up weapons at different places and fired at enemies relentlessly. He deceived them in believing that it is a large army force whom they were fighting against. But soon the truth was revealed to the Chinese army. They become furious thinking that it was merely a soldier who was standing up against all of them. After that, they surrounded Jaswant Singh, realizing that he was about to be captured. This fearless man decided to shot himself before the enemy could lay their hands on him. To take their revenge, the Chinese army cut off his head and took it as a souvenir. But later, after the war was ceased, the Chinese army returned the head of the solider to the Indian army as, they too were amazed by his selfless act of heroism. The courage that he has shown was extraordinary. He is the only soldier in the history of the Indian army who continue to serve even after his death. For his bravery, he has been bestowed with the award of Maha Vir Chakra posthumously.

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan – The Ultimate Fighter Of 26/11 Mumbai Attack

major sandeep unnikrishnan

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was the team commander of Special Action Group(SAG) who was part of the operation. He and his team members of 10 commandos entered the hotel and were moving with every caution. The inside view was more dreadful than the outside. They started their search for anyone who might be alive and in need of help. They were about to move to the next floor when one of the team members found one man and a woman lying under the table in extreme pain as they were shot twice. Major Unnikrishnan immediately started the evacuation process for them and made sure that they reach outside the hotel safely.

After checking from floor to floor, they heard few screams and gun firing from the above floor, they realized that terrorists were on the 3rd floor. In the above room, few people were held under gunpoint by the terrorist. As the team started to walk up the stairs, the terrorist started firing at them from the above. The terrorist was already aware of their positions and they were waiting for them. After a few minutes, they threw a grenade, it bounced at the staircase and exploded. For a period of time, the fierce gun firing continued between the SAG team and terrorist. In the darkness, only flashes from the gun firing could be seen. In between Sunil Jodha, one of the major Unnikrishnan’s team member was hit by two bullets in his chest. He asked his other team member to take Sunil Jodha into safety immediately and went to the room alone without thinking about his own safety. Now, the situation was highly dangerous as there was nobody to cover him. He entered the room and hide behind the broken chair laying in the floor. He held his last grenade in his hand, snapped the pin off and threw it near the window. The grenade exploded, shattering the window. There was no one. He started moving down the corridor, holding his gun MP5 close. There was a table to his left and suddenly there was the sound of AK-47 firing from beneath the table. In the encounter that followed Major Unnikrishnan was shot. His last words were “do not come up, I’ll handle them.”

Major Unnikrishnan and his team were successful at saving 14 lives during the operation. He was given Ashoka Chakra which is the highest peacetime military award.

Major Somnath Sharma – A Story of a Vigorous Leader

major somnath sharma

Among those uncountable brave soldiers who have given their lives during the Indo-Pakistan war in 1947, there was a man who did something so extraordinary and proved the true meaning of leadership. From the very beginning of his career in the Indian army, Major Somnath Sharma was known for his praiseworthy work. When Pakistan invaded in Jammu and Kashmir on October 22nd, 1947, at that time he was serving as Major in 4th Kumaon Regiment. Next morning he received the orders to report in Srinagar with his troop members. Before his company was asked to move to Srinagar he had an accident while playing hockey and his hand was fractured. He was advised to rest but he insisted to be with his company. Two days later they were given the information that the enemy soldiers have captured a small town named Badgam which was only a few miles away from the Srinagar airfield. They have entered into the valley with only one intention to seize Jammu and Kashmir under their possession. Clear-cut orders were given to Major Somnath and his company to prevent any intrusion and defend the new state that has become the part of India.

When Major Somnath and his soldiers reached their destination on 3rd November he made sure that all his troop members were at the fighting positions according to his strategy. He knew that the enemy has attacked Badgam to distract them and the next attack would surely come from the west. During the patrolling they did not notice any movement of the enemies, so, two companies were moved back to Srinagar. Only the ‘D’ company led by Major Sharma was asked to stay back.

Around 3 pm a large army force of nearly 600-700 enemy soldiers appeared from the west and started firing. They attacked the company with powerful mortars. Within a few minutes, they were surrounded by the enemy who was firing at them non stop. More than 50 Indian soldiers were dead and the company was inflicted with major loss due to heavy bombardment. Major Somnath analyzed the whole situation and soon understood the grave danger they were in. He knew that if the enemy succeeded in their mission and took control over the Srinagar airlift then soon they would lose everything but he wasn’t ready to retrieve a single step even though they were outnumbered.

He ran to his ground section often exposing himself to the enemy without caring for his own life and encouraged his troop members to fight till their last breath and asked them not to give up. Even though his right hand was fractured he ignored all the outcomes and took the responsibility of filing the magazines and supplied them to men, who were operating light machine guns. In between the firing, a mortar shell exploded near him and killed him. But under his leadership, the Indian soldiers were so much motivated by his valor and determination that they fought the enemies for 6 hours. After some time the reinforcement team landed at the airport and took control over the situation.

It was Major Sharma’s courage and unbreakable spirit of soldiers of 4th Kumaon Regiment that failed the deadly intentions of the enemies. For his fearless actions, he was awarded Param Vir Chakra (PVC), India’s highest wartime gallantry award. He was the first recipient to receive this award.

Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav – Story Of A Living Legend

subedar yogendra singh yadav

It was May when Subedar Yogendra Yadav who was part of the ‘Ghatak’ Commando platoon, an elite special forces unit received their orders to attack the enemies and recapture the fort at any cost. Soon he and his platoon was climbing at the height of 16000 Ft, taking every single step with caution, they didn’t want to disclose their position to their enemies.

It wasn’t an easy task because of the harsh wind and freezing cold weather, but they kept moving forward persistently. The platoon came up with a strategy of climbing up the Tiger hill at night and surprising their enemy with an attack. It was 90-degree steep climb they had to make, one step wrong and death was inevitable. Subedar Yadav volunteered to climb up the mountain first so that he could affix a rope system into the ice and other members of the platoon could easily follow him.

It was a pitch dark night when he began on this dangerous mission keeping his head held high with only one aim, to protect his nation. For straight two days, they kept on moving up the hill, his platoon members just a few yards away from him. On the third night after tough climbing, Subedar Yadav was just halfway up the ice covered hill when all of a sudden the commandos heard a distinct sound coming from the mountain crest. Within few seconds a rocket grenade hit the ground with an explosion followed by heavy gun firing from above by the enemies.

Half of the platoon members were shot and others fell headlong to the ground reaching a dreadful end. He looked back and realized that half of his platoon was eliminated. He himself was shot with three bullets but even those bullets failed in breaking his spirit and rose like a phoenix and started climbing up the hill. He made up to the enemy position where there was a bunker. As the crossfire was going on he successfully destroyed one of the enemies bunker killing everyone inside with a grenade. He killed another enemy soldier from a close range who was firing at them with a machinegun. In the fighting, he suffered from nerve injuries but that didn’t stop him from standing against his enemies.

After 6 hours of fighting, he along with his remaining platoon members ceased their firing made it look like that they all have died. Next morning few Pakistani soldiers started moving towards their position to analyze the situation and that is when the Subedar Yadav and others fired at them relentlessly killing everyone but hearing the sound of firing within half an hour more than 30 enemy soldiers have reached there. The platoon was outnumbered and they were not left with any ammunition. He saw two of his team members shot dead in front of his eyes. He himself pretended to be dead when the Pakistani soldier was standing next to him. They shot him twice in the chest but he didn’t make a single sound. When the enemy soldiers were returning he took a grenade out of his pocket and charged at them and continued firing. The enemy had fallen to the ground. Collecting all his strength he reached to the position of other platoons. On the same night, the Indian flag was fluttering with the wind on the Tiger Hill.

For his bravery, Yadav was awarded with Param Vir Chakra when he was in the hospital fighting for his life after getting shot for 15 times. But he is the lion of the Indian army who lived to tell his story.

Havildar Hangpan Dada – A Hero Who Lived Among Us

havildar hangpan dada

On 26th May 2016, it was around 6 a.m when the phone in the headquarter rang and on the other side of the line, a sepoy named J N Baite was reporting that he had spotted some suspicious movement in the Shamshabari range. This location was between the Sabu post and Marsari post which were below the headquarters. J N Baite was the first O.P( observation post) on that day and he noticed that 4 militants were moving ahead of the ambush point who were trying to sneak in. Without wasting any time he immediately reported the matter to the commanding officer. The O.C asked him to keep an eye on the movement of the enemies and then he further reported the message in the Sabu post.

Hangpan Dada and his team were given the information that the militants were moving from the Mira Naar towards Sabu post and he has to stop them at any cost. Within half an hour, the entire area was cordoned. Operation Sabu Dada began at around 7 am. There were two teams one of Sub. Kurung Anal and other of Naik Najibur. Dada was placed in the Sabu post who was moving along with his team to block the most likely route of escape for the militants in the Mira Naar. They were moving cautiously, hiding their moments in the midst of the morning. The weather was making everything worse. He and his team were ordered to move first and cover the area where the moments of the militants were last seen.

The company headquarters started firing at the enemies with the machine gun. It was a surprise attack for them for which they were not ready. Two of the militant hid and the other two ran down towards the Naar. Dada and his team started firing at them but they took cover behind the rocks. He moved ahead making no sound and took a clear cut shot at one of the militants. One militant down, three more to go. He decided to move forward and asked his team members to give him cover. The cross fire started. The team was engaged in fierce gun firing. He crawled to the ground keeping his head low not to get in sight of the enemy and took his next position. One more shot fired and the militant fall to the ground, dead.

After that, for the search of other militants, two teams were formed one of the commanding officer and other of Hangpan Dada. He was leading his team and was encouraging them with every step. He knew it was important to eliminate rest of the militant before dark or they would lose them. The area where the enemies were reported to be seen was very dangerous. There were big rocks behind which the enemies could hide very easily and it was impossible to spot someone in the slopes. Seeing Dada’s team the militants started firing at them. He knew it was now or never, keeping his head low he ran quickly and came face to face with the third terrorist and neutralized him.

Well aware of the fact that his life would be at stake he still moved forward to kill the last terrorist and suddenly he heard a shot fired from the front and felt the bullet piercing his stomach. A loud voice echoed in the hills “Dada has been shot”. But that didn’t stop him, he collected his strength and tried to get back on his feet. And all of a sudden before he could have held his gun, he was shot again. He was succumbed to his injuries. The last terrorist was killed by one of his team members.

Havildar Hangpan Dada was not an ordinary solider, he really was exceptional. For his remarkable efforts and the courage he had shown, he was awarded Ashok Chakra posthumously.

A soldier never dies in vain because just like their life, their death is also out of ordinary. Every soldier knows that there may be a bullet carrying their name and they feel proud to take it for their nation. Like these epic stories, there are many other stories of soldiers who have laid their lives whenever the nation asked for it. These martyrs will always live in our hearts. Their stories will be passed as a legacy to the next generation. We are grateful to all the soldiers who fight for us and for our freedom. These man in olive green are the real heroes and we salute them.

A Tribute To All The Soldiers

Only Prayer Of A Soldier…

Before the dawn breaks My eyes will be closed for sure Mine will also become an unsung story Of all the sacrifice and pain I’ve endured Yet there is no regret As I’ve played every role Be it a son to a mother, a brother to a sister Or a lover to my half soul Death is standing next to me And I’m holding a letter There is a picture of me in uniform Saying ‘ I Love You Daddy’ from my daughter Once again a mother will cry Seeing me in a box when I’ll return No, it has never been about medals But the honor that I’ve earned The two stars on my shoulder Will always shine brighter Than any star in the sky As they speak for a fighter Believe me, I’m just a man And I too had my fears There were many times When I’ve cried unmanly tears But don’t you worry my friend Because I’m not gone I promise you Only as a soldier I’ll reborn Then once again I’ll be wrapped in tricolor With my last breath I pray to be remembered just as, a soldier.

The Heroism Of re hero’s: Soldiers

Soumya Jain

A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to preserve and endure despite an overwhelming obstacle. Why it is extremely salient to extrapolate true heroism in the true sense?. How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and their sheer behind them!”A hero, who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”

“It is a proud privilege to praise a soldier – a good soldier with discipline, self-respect, always pride in his unit and his country, a high sense of duty and obligation to comrades and his superiors, and a self-confidence born of demonstrated ability. I wonder of a hero as someone who deduces the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom.”Indeed, to be a soldier one needs that special gene, that extra something, that enables a person to jump out his all amenity, something, after all, that is unimaginable to most of us, as we are simply not brave enough. Undoubtedly, they are heroes who risk their lives every day to protect the world and always make it a better place to live. A hero who selflessly, who is generous in spirit, tries to give wholeheartedly. We all should wear one’s heart on one’s sleeve our gratitude to them, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not just utter a word, but to live by them. One must give the badge of honour to the soldier everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause. Honor, also, to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field and serves; as he best can.”

Only real heroes sacrifice to lightens the mind and gives him a sense of peace and joy. They are people who put themselves on the line and sacrifice their safety for the greater good and others, and anyone in any profession whose concern is the welfare of other people instead of the individual is inspiring. As soon as, sacrifice becomes a duty and necessity to mankind. I see no limit to the horizon which opens before him. What we do for ourselves dies with us. Nevertheless, what we do for others and the world remains immortal.

It is almost impossible for a country to survive without a great army to defend it in times of war. But it wouldn’t be justified if one disregards the sacrifices of their families. Behind every strong soldier, they have an even stronger woman who stands behind him, supports him, and loves him with all her heart. Being deeply loved by ancestry gives them strength. Outrightly, regard your soldiers as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys; look on them as your beloved sons, and they will stand by you even unto death whose words of thanks will not be heard. An army is the pride of the nation the ultimate test of man’s conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard. It is always found that tough times never last, but tough people do.”

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction. The Army is the true nobility of our country as their actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, which is saluting.

The brave die never, though they sleep in dust: Their courage nerves a thousand living men. The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.” The nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the braves.”On the battlefield, the military pledges to leave no stone unturned soldier behind.

As a nation, let us pledge that when they return home, we leave no veteran behind. These fallen heroes represent the character of a nation that has a long history of patriotism and honour – and a nation that has fought many battles to keep our country free from threats of terror. The soldier that didn’t come back were the heroes. It’s a roll of the dice. If a bullet has his name on it, he is a hero. If he hears a bullet go by, he is a survivor. The journey of solider life taught that “Live for something better rather than die for nothing.”

The Unsung Heroes Stories of India Amrit Mahotsav

Unsung Heroes of India’s freedom struggle

Introduction.

In today's fast-moving world and tough competitive day-to-day life, the youth hardly find time for remembrance of our rich heritage and past. This becomes most crucial whilst the nation celebrates Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (commemoration of 75 years of Indian Independence). The fight against colonial rule in India constitutes a unique narrative, one which is not marred by violence. Rather a narrative that is full of variegated stories of valor, bravery, Satyagraha, dedication, and sacrifice across the length and breadth of the subcontinent. These stories compose the rich Indian cultural heritage and traditions. Thus, the unsung heroes need not necessarily define the lesser-known freedom fighters. They may, at times, be the leaders whose ideals delineate the Indian value system.

The Section on Unsung Heroes is an attempt to recall and remember forgotten heroes of our freedom struggle, many of whom might be renowned yet unknown to the new generation. The aim of recreating and bringing forth stories, which lay as faded memories of the past, shall serve as a medium of inspiration and encouragement for the coming generations. India 2.0 is not just about fuelling the spirit of India in any one particular paradigm of growth. It encompasses all spheres of life, most of all by enriching our hearts and souls. The spirit of India is incomplete whilst we take our unsung heroes along this journey of growth and development. Their ethos and principles ought to be recalled and respected.

Speech on Soldiers

Soldier Speech in English

Our brothers, fighting for the nation, are the soldiers who are the protectors of this country. A soldier sacrifices their lives in order to protect a million other lives. The soldiers do not get to lead a very comfortable life every day and still they dutifully protect their own country, they carry their duty with a badge of honor and hence they are so committed towards it.

Speech on Indian soldiers is the main agenda of this write-up. We have structured the speech in simple yet elegant English.

Why should we all know about our Soldiers?

After the formation of nation-states, it became important to keep the defense in place for protecting the country from any external threats. The defense system is created by the soldiers trained to fight during physical combat. They fight with so much risk for their life that it cannot be compared with any other profession of ours. It is our duty to recognize the sacrifice they give to protect the National frontiers and also during the rigorous training they go through. Knowing about the hardship every soldier bears can inspire the young generations and children to work hard in their life.

The word soldier is a very ancient word, initially referring to the mercenaries fighting for a war. In modern times countries have established a well-structured and dedicated army that is ready for battles at any point in time. The other 2 defense systems  are 'the Navy' and 'the air force.' The trained men forming these two groups are also the soldiers of the country. The whole military system is well managed with a top-to-the-down command structure. Some soldiers serve until they retire from their position and some never get a chance to retire and sacrifice their life on the line of duty. That is why it is very important for us to recognize and appreciate our soldiers serving for the peace and development of our nation.

Students can learn many things from the Army of the country such as discipline, hard work, punctuality, dedication, determination, survival in any type of environment, and a lot more. So speech on the soldiers is very informative as well as inspiring for the students listening to it.

Long Speech on Soldiers

Honorable Principal, Respected teachers, and my dear friends, I greet all of you a very Good Morning and happy Independence Day.

On the eve of this auspicious day, I would like to dedicate my speech to our beloved brothers, the soldiers of Mother India. Today we are celebrating this day with such a great festive spirit, with peace in our mind, I am able to deliver my speech with great calmness and out of fear, people today will celebrate this day with a lot of enjoyment all these are possible as we know we are not vulnerable to the enemy or foreign attacks, as the borders are sealed by our brave soldiers. With this in our head that the soldiers are up there performing their duty, be it 3 in the sunny afternoon or 3 in the frosty cold night, we can peacefully do our chores or go for a sound sleep. For all these and for other innumerable gratitude that I feel within me, I would like to give a grand salute to all these fighters serving our nation.

We frequently hear the news that our Indian soldiers are fighting on the Indian borders all day and all night without any failure to protect the country from the attacks of terrorists and to protect the people of India. For this, we acknowledge and are very grateful to every soldier of this country for being the bravest heroes who go through the pain and struggles only to provide us with a peaceful life. It seems they have vowed to keep every single day of ours safe and secure.

For every soldier, the nation for which they serve comes first even before their own family. For their profession, the soldiers do not get enough time to spend with their families. A soldier never hesitates to sacrifice their own life for the safety of their nation. So, the families of these fighting soldiers always wait eagerly for their safe return to their homes.

The soldiers are constantly living under various life-threatening conditions. They remain unsure about when they will be able to return to their own home and meet with their family. In order to safeguard a peaceful night for us, the soldiers put their everything and for their motherland.

My heart is filled with respect and love and my eyes get moist for the splendid brave deeds of the soldiers and their sacrifices.
