MBA application essay tips

While MBA program admissions directors consider an applicant’s GMAT scores and academic track record, their goal is to  get to know a potential student beyond the numbers.  That’s why the essay component is an important—and enjoyable—opportunity for you to practice some self-reflection and  state why you’re a  unique ly  strong candidate.

With the goal of clarifying the essay writing process and easing some of the stress associated with it, here are some  tips to keep in mind as you  start  writing .

Be a storyteller  in your application essay

The application essays are your story to tell. This is your shot to explain motivations and display your commitment and enthusiasm. Make sure you are presenting a  consistent picture of who you are, what you have done and what you want to achieve.

Be concise on why you want to go to business school and how you think  the program  specifically will help you in achieving your goals. Some people may feel that they are not able to fully express themselves given the essay word limit, but take it as an opportunity to focus on what is truly important and relevant to the question asked of you.

While essay questions will vary by school and by year, they will often share some core objectives.

Common questions  of MBA essays

Essay questions frequently fall along the lines of :

Tell us about a time that you created impact on an individual, company or community? What did you learn from it?

This type of question—perhaps worded along the lines of “Tell me about a time when you influenced someone?” or “Tell me about a time when you introduced new initiatives or brought in a unique contribution to the team?” — is your opportunity to think about what values drive your actions and how these learnings have shaped you.

What are some challenging situations you have faced? What are your motivators and how has that helped you in making decisions? How significant was the impact and what did it mean to you?

With this type of question, it’s good to remember not to rehash your CV. Instead, be authentic and passionate in your writing. Try to include personal and specific examples to give a clear understanding of who you are.

What are your post-MBA goals?

Here’s the chance for applicants to express their personal objectives and illustrate how an MBA help them get there.

There are two key things to remember when writing this type of essay:

  • Be  concise
  • Be  specific

Your goal here is to express concrete career goals. You also shouldn’t hesitate to mention and describe target roles and companies. Going further,  how do these goals fit with your values ? And what impact do you hope to bring to potential organizations or sectors?

Applicants pursuing a career change should detail the skills they already possess and how an MBA program will bridge the gaps in the way of a successful professional pivot. Here, you’re encourage d  to identify relevant program offerings as well as clubs, classes and career treks that reaffirm why you are applying.

Scholarship essay advice

How do you plan to finance your MBA ?   Why do  you think you deserve a scholarship?

Pursuing your MBA is a big investment and it is essential to have a solid financial plan with contingencies.  Applicants often  combine various financing options including personal or family savings, public or private loans and scholarships.  It is important to consider the feasibility of your financial plan and provide  a  good reasoning to support your scholarship application.

The   IESE MBA   program  offer s  an array of scholarships.  But  highlighting your motivation and commitment   to  joining the school and emphasiz ing   how you can further contribute to the  school  community   is always advisable.

How to Get into IESE Business School: IESE Essay Tips and Examples

IESE, like all business schools, is in search of capable, ambitious candidates who know why they need an MBA and what they want to do once they have one. The school does not demand too much from its applicants with respect to written essays, requiring just one 300-word submission, but candidates must also record a brief video essay. An optional essay is available for anyone who has still more information to share with the admissions committee, whether to mitigate a shortcoming in their profile or to highlight a key strength or story that the committee would otherwise not learn about. Our more detailed analysis of IESE’s essay prompts for this season follows.

IESE 2023–2024 Essay Tips

Career goals essay: what are your short-term and mid-term post-mba goals how will the iese mba program help you achieve them (word limit 300 max).

With this straightforward query about your expectations for where you will go with your MBA after graduating, IESE simply wants you to spell out what you have in mind as you approach this phase of your life and career. Be as specific as possible, yet still succinct, in your description of where you see yourself after graduation and several years further down the line, from the industry and role to any additional details about which you currently feel confident (perhaps certain companies or responsibilities that appeal to you in particular). The school’s 300-word limit prevents you from going into excessive detail about your past, but be sure to offer enough information to provide context and support for your stated goals. You want the progression from one stage of your professional career to the next to be clear and reasonable.

Next, you must explain how being an MBA student at IESE will assist you in achieving your professional aspirations. The admissions committee wants to see that you have dedicated just as much thought, if not more, to why you want to study at IESE as you have to what you want to do for your career. Think carefully about what you need to learn or gain (with respect to skills, network, experiences, and knowledge base) to be able to reach your stated goals, and then detail which specific resources and opportunities at the school you believe will allow you to do so. Your goal is to convince the admissions committee that IESE is the missing link between who and where you are now and who and where you envision yourself to be in the future. To accomplish this, you need to do research on the school that goes beyond its website, viewbook, and related marketing materials and make direct contact with students, alumni, and other school representatives. Attend an in-person admissions event or visit the campus to familiarize yourself with the program’s environment and resources, if possible, and if not, check out online events and options that might allow you to do so. Understanding what and who the school truly entails, as well as how it works, is key in identifying and then articulating your need for an IESE MBA in particular. By thoroughly understanding the school and clearly discussing how the particular offerings you have identified relate directly to your needs, you increase your chances substantially of crafting a truly effective essay.

The core components of this essay are elements of a traditional personal statement, so we encourage you to download your free copy of the mbaMission Personal Statement Guide , which explains ways of approaching these topics and offers several illustrative sample essays. And to learn more about IESE’s academic program, unique resources, and other key features, download your free copy of the mbaMission IESE Business School Program Guide as well.

Optional Essay: What would you like to highlight about yourself or your journey which may have not been captured in your application? (word limit 300 max)

With this prompt, IESE acknowledges that some candidates have aspects of their profiles that might need a little special clarification or that could be additive in some way to their candidacy but do not fit anywhere else in the application. This essay is therefore your opportunity—if needed—to address anything that might trigger questions for an admissions officer, such as a low GRE or GMAT score, a legal or disciplinary incident, or an unusual choice of recommender. Or, you might believe you have an as-yet-untold story that the admissions committee truly needs to hear to be able to evaluate you fully and fairly. However, keep in mind that by submitting an optional essay, you are requiring the already taxed admissions readers to do additional work on your behalf, so do not rush to fill this space just because you fear that not doing so will somehow count against you (it will not), and also avoid being overly verbose or sharing more information than is truly necessary just because you technically can. Ensure that the admissions committee’s extra time and effort are truly warranted. If you feel you might have a valid reason for submitting this additional essay or are not sure whether the issue you are considering would warrant doing so, we encourage you to download a free copy of our mbaMission Optional Essays Guide , in which we offer detailed advice on when and how to take advantage of the optional essay, along with multiple sample essays.

Video Essay: This year you will also complete a Video Essay as part of the application. Once you submit the written application and pay the application fees, you will receive a Kira Video Essay link (within 24-hours) to be completed by the Application Round Deadline. The link will expire in 48-hours after receipt, hence to provide yourself with adequate time we recommend submitting the written section a few days ahead of the deadline. There will be two video essay questions that you will be required to complete. We will consider your application as complete and ready to be reviewed only once we have received your answers to the video questions. All instructions for this section will be shared with you along with the link.

Video components like this are usually a result of the admissions committee’s desire to see and hear the candidates they are evaluating—to put a human “face” to the statistics and other inanimate elements of the MBA application. Keep this in mind as you approach this segment of IESE’s application, and make being authentic and natural your primary goal. The admissions officers are not looking for the next viral TED Talk presenter or late-night TV host. They just want to get to know you as a unique individual who might one day join the school’s community.

So, start by taking a deep breath. We understand that videos might make you feel as though you are being put on the spot, but IESE is really not trying to make you squirm. As we just noted, the admissions committee simply wants a more dynamic representation of your personality than a written essay can provide. You cannot answer any of the school’s video questions incorrectly, so do not worry about giving the “right” answer. Just respond to each query honestly, as smoothly as you can (despite any nervousness you might be feeling), and be yourself.

Take some time to imagine potential questions and practice responding calmly and naturally. To access one hundred common interview questions you can use to help prepare, download a free copy of the mbaMission Interview Guide , which of course also includes advice on preparing for and mastering the interview process. To practice responding to more random queries, you can Google “icebreaker questions” to find lists of examples. As you practice, strive to minimize your use of filler words and phrases (e.g., “um,” “uh,” “like,” “you know”) so that you are less likely to depend on or default to them when the time comes for your actual video submission.

Although you can prepare as much as you want, you get only one chance at the recording. If you stumble while answering or ultimately are unhappy with your answer, unfortunately, you cannot do anything about it. You will not be able to rerecord your responses or try again another time. This might make you nervous, but we encourage you to view the situation a little differently. Again, IESE wants to get to know the authentic you through these video essays. If you fumble for words or lose your train of thought, just laugh or shrug and continue with your response. Accepting a mistake with a sense of humor and grace will give the admissions committee a more positive and natural impression of your personality than rigid scripting and overpreparation ever could.

IESE MBA Essay Analysis

In this article, we will delve deep into the essay prompts, offering insights, strategies, and real-life examples to help you stand out from the crowd and make your application to IESE truly shine.

MBA Application Deadlines

Essay analysis, optional essay, how to create the video essay effectively, video essay tips, iese business school mba essay analysis.

There is one compulsory prompt and one optional essay prompt.

Let’s analyse the required prompt

Career Goals Essay: What are your short-term and mid-term post-MBA goals? How will the IESE MBA program help you achieve them? (300 words)

This question stands apart from other similar prompts that usually inquire about short and long-term goals, but not mid-term goals.

So, what exactly do mid-term goals entail? It’s important to grasp the distinction between these phases of planning.

A mid-term goal typically spans 1 to 3 years and focuses on enhancing your journey, building expertise in a specific area, acquiring new skills, or uncovering fresh passions.

Think of these as stepping stones towards your unmentioned long-term goals. Outline the steps you plan to take, creating clear markers that transition from short-term to long-term aspirations.

Mapping and timeline-creation

Begin by briefly mentioning your long-term goals to provide context, before delving into your short-term goals. Transition smoothly between these sections, ensuring they seamlessly connect. Effective demarcations and clear checkpoints between each phase should show the natural progression of your planning and the thoroughness of your preparation. This demonstrates your foresight and careful consideration.

Long-Term Goal: Creating access to medical infrastructure in X country.

Short-Term Goals:

  • Networking and obtaining contacts.
  • Finding a mentor in the field.
  • Gaining relevant job experience, potentially as a consultant, specialist, or manager focused on research.

Mid-Term Goals:

  • Pursuing further education, such as a degree or certification.
  • Cross-training in a related area to enhance expertise.
  • Seeking promotions or opportunities that allow you to contribute more significantly.
  • Exploring funding options or researching for the establishment of a startup or organization to realize your long-term goal of improving medical infrastructure access.

This progression illustrates a clear roadmap from short-term achievements to mid-term development, all culminating in the attainment of your long-term aspiration.

Be specific

To prepare your response, it’s essential to research the specific opportunities that IESE offers. Begin by thoroughly exploring the IESE website, learning about their programs, faculty, and unique aspects that make them stand out.

Reach out to alumni or read success stories that attribute their achievements to IESE. Blend these insights into your answer about your short and mid-term goals.

Explain why these IESE opportunities are crucial for your plans. Do they provide you with skills you need? What are those skills? Why do you consider IESE the right fit? How does IESE stand apart from other universities? Use these details to highlight how IESE aligns with your goals and why you’re excited about joining their program.

This approach will show your genuine interest and well-informed decision-making. Ensure that you pay special attention to the qualities that they seek –

‘As the MBA Program’s intention is to prepare competent, responsible, and ethical leaders , the Admissions Committee is interested in many aspects of a candidate’s personality. Please prepare your application and essays carefully to best demonstrate who you are and how you fit with the IESE MBA Program.’

What would you like to highlight about yourself or your journey which may have not been captured in your application? (word limit 300 max)

Address any employment gaps or academic concerns honestly, providing a clear and concise explanation of the challenges you faced and how you have overcome them. This will demonstrate your determination and resilience as a candidate.

Focus on highlighting your strengths and unique qualities that set you apart. Discuss your engagement in extracurricular activities, such as local philanthropic drives, sports, or hobbies, and explain how these experiences have shaped you as a person and contributed to your work ethic.

Ensure that your narrative centers around your suitability as a candidate and adds value to the discussion of your candidacy for the program. Avoid irrelevant information and stay focused on showcasing your potential to thrive in the MBA program.

Video Essay

This year you will also complete a Video Essay as part of the application.

To approach this effectively, you’ll need to invest hours watching videos on similar content, create a well-structured speech outline, practice both alone and with a partner. The video essay demands strong body language, effective speaking skills, and a charisma that can only be experienced firsthand—its impact can vary, influenced by how individuals perceive you, resulting in somewhat variable standards.

Nevertheless, this provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to the admissions committee that you’re a confident candidate capable of effectively handling the challenge of an elevator pitch.

Given the 3-minute time limit for the video, roughly 400 to 450 words, it’s advisable to draft a basic script and rehearse it repeatedly to ensure a polished delivery. Though time-intensive, this process hones skills that prove valuable for the Kira video assessment as well. Furthermore, this format enables you to narrate your experiences using various inflections and expressions, enhancing your presentation.

Depending on which aspect of your personality you want to highlight, pick 1 to 3 incidents to describe yourself. Opt for incidents you can summarize within 30 seconds. Then, discuss your takeaways and why the incident was significant. A streamlined draft ensures efficient use of your limited time and words.

Be expressive

In the video format, you can employ rhetoric, humor, or non-verbal cues like facial expressions and hand gestures. Aim to incorporate the first two for a semi-conversational tone, engaging the admissions committee. Use impactful phrases, famous quotes, or a motto as a structural guide. Be cautious not to choose overly specialized or abstract references. This approach creates a web of relatability in your speech.

Presentation matters

Prior to recording:

Besides dressing appropriately and minimizing distractions, pay attention to your clothing, background, and lighting. Make sure your camera and microphone work smoothly, without any technical issues. Have ample memory space to allow for multiple takes, ensuring you capture your best performance. This practice can also help alleviate any nervousness you might experience while n front of a camera.

During recording:

Rehearse your script several times to become comfortable with the rhythm and flow of your answers. This familiarity allows you to add your own personal touch. When delivering the speech, let your genuine self shine through your words. Radiate warmth, smile, and ensure you’re at ease. Integrating humor or asking rhetorical questions, usually difficult in essays, can enhance your delivery. However, be cautious to avoid filler words like ‘ummm,’ ‘oh,’ and ‘ah,’ as these can reflect on your confidence and thought flow.

Post recording :

Ensure there are no speech or body language errors by seeking a second opinion from someone you know. This helps assess if you made a positive impact. Make multiple correctly named copies of the file for backup. If submitting a video link, securely store it on a reliable cloud space, verify link access, and ensure it opens without issues. Lastly, double-check video quality, as it may degrade during uploading, downloading, or rendering.

Career Goals Essay

What are your short-term and mid-term post-mba goals how will the iese mba program help you achieve them (word limit 300 max).

Essay two focuses specifically on your short and mid-term career goals and why IESE. The admissions committee can see your resume within the application, so this essay should give the background of who you are and why you have made your choices. Think about one or two pivotal career moments you may want to explore.

Ideally, your experiences have led to a career goal that you can describe clearly in both the short and mid term. In other words, be specific. For example, if you want to go into venture capital after graduation, talk about the industry you would like to focus on. Then, discuss what progress you envision after five to eight years in venture capital. What level will you be and where will you focus? Consider if you want to experience different industries or firms in the first several years after your MBA graduation.

Finally, you should explain why an MBA is your next step. What will you learn in the IESE MBA program to complement your work experiences? Will your classmates and the environment benefit from your expertise? Specific classes and professors are always useful details to add.

Optional Essay

What would you like to highlight about yourself or your journey which may have not been captured in your application (word limit 300 max).

This optional essay is entirely open-ended and allows you to explain anything additional. Therefore, think about the stories you could tell about your background and questions to describe your journey.

If you focused on your career in the previous questions, this is a great essay to tell a personal story. For example, you could describe your background and motivations that have led to your accomplishments. Or, you could discuss a challenge in your life that has built character and impacted your life journey. Finally, make sure to include specific details to strengthen your story.

Also, to track this essay to the IESE MBA criteria, you could use this space to demonstrate that you have personal drive, an international outlook, and strong values.

  • By Lisa Bevill

IESE’s application includes one required essay, one optional essay, and a new video essay.

IESE Business School is forward-focused and career advancement-driven, so  the application aims to understand your career development and growth, your career aspirations, and how the MBA aligns and what are your career aspirations. The required essay focuses squarely on that topic.

How to Tackle the IESE Essays

Essay Question 1: What are your short-term and mid-term post-MBA goals? How will the IESE MBA program help you achieve them?  (300 words max)

Career progression and leadership impact are considered critical in the IESE application. This question aims to capture who you want to be and what you want to do.

Too often applicants focus on their dream job in the distant future, without designing a realistic path to reach it. By defining the timing in terms of just after graduation and 5 years out, IESE is aiming to gain insight into the specific stepping stones that will support your career journey. It will be important that your career aspirations be ambitious, yet attainable. It can be tricky to find the right balance; however, keep in mind that unrealistic career goals can be a red flag to admissions professionals. Be sure to consider your previous experience and connect the dots between what you have done and where you want to go.

The admissions committee wants to be confident that you can envision how the IESE MBA will add value to your career goals and support your professional growth. Your ability to articulate a coherent, compelling career vision is an indication of the quality of work — and clarity of thought — you’re capable of producing. This kind of clarity is also evidence you possess the abilities to develop a savvy job search strategy, even as your ambitions evolve. Do your research and speak to current business school students and alumni to learn more about what kind of career opportunities are available to IESE business school graduates and how the job recruiting process works.

Essay Question 2 (optional): What would you like to highlight about yourself or your journey which may have not been captured in your application? ( 300 words max)

This open-ended question is an opportunity to showcase your interests and passion and this opportunity is not to be wasted! Reflect on a part of your story that you have not yet conveyed and that provides insight into who you are and what you value.

IESE looks holistically at candidates, aiming to attract global citizens who care about social impact. This is your opportunity to show how you align with those values. This question could be used to provide insight into a less professional element that might have shaped who you are, such as the perseverance learned in playing the piano, the cultural awareness and perspective gained from traveling, or the joy and gratitude of service. Your response should align with the core themes of the application and your first essay, and provide additional insight into who you are.

As always, the essays and application should be coherent and professional, and it is recommended all essays and applications be extremely polished. Given the personality of the school, the attention to detail, appreciation of the network and career growth, and your professionalism could add subtle value.

Video Essay Component (NEW in 2023-2024)

Once you submit the written application and pay the application fees, you will receive a Kira Video Essay link (within 24-hours) to be completed by the  application round deadline . The link will  expire in 48-hours after receipt. T o provide yourself with adequate time to complete the videos, we recommend submitting the written application  a few days ahead of the deadline.

There will be two video essay questions that you will be required to complete. IESE will consider your application as complete and ready to be reviewed only once they have received your answers to the video questions. All instructions for this section will be shared with you along with the link.

Why does IESE require a video essay?

How does the iese video essay work, which types of questions are asked, the difference between a good and great video essay.

  • Get expert help

With its focus on diversity and ethical leadership, IESE is at the top of the list for an increasing number of applicants who seek to pursue (or continue pursuing) a high-impact, global career.

Despite this fact, many applicants dedicate countless hours to writing essays and then rush through the video essay component.

This is a huge mistake.

In addition to giving the admissions committee the chance to “put a face with a name,” the video essay is an essential part of the IESE application, as it allows committee members to determine if your communication style and values are a good fit with the IESE community.

In fact, in our experience helping our IESE applicants secure a place at the school, we have noticed that the video essay can be as influential in an applicant’s admissions decision as the admissions interview .

That’s why we’ve prepared this guide to help you understand how the IESE video essay works and have shared a list of IESE video essay questions to ensure you put your best foot forward!

The IESE video essay is an essential part of the application process because it gives the admissions committee the chance to truly “meet” candidates — as well as identify red flags in potential members of the IESE community.

With that in mind, it’s extremely important to make sure you fully understand this component of the application.

The way the video essay works is very simple.

After submitting your application, you will receive an email from a company called Kira Talent within 24 hours of submission . This email will contain a link that allows you to access the video essay platform.

After signing in and starting the session, you will get three IESE video essay questions in total, one at a time. After receiving the questions, you will have 15 seconds to think and then 20 seconds to answer the first question. For the second and third questions, you will have 1 minute to prepare and 1.5 minutes to answer. There are no opportunities to redo the question, and you only get one chance to speak and provide your answer.

If you’ve taken the TOEFL exam , you’ve already practiced for the type of format you can expect in the IESE video essay!

After signing in and “starting” the session, a video will appear on the screen. The video will present the questions to you one by one. Once the question has been read, a clock showing your preparation time will start counting down.

After the preparation time runs out, the clock to answer will start, and you will need to give your answer during this period of time. Remember: you cannot redo any of the questions.

After you answer the question, the system will upload your answer to the server (depending on your connection this can take a while) and will present you with the next question.

DO NOT leave your computer during the upload time , even if it’s taking a while. You cannot pause the process, and you may end up missing questions!

Technical requirements

Given past applicants’ issues with iPad and mobile versions of the application, we strongly suggest you record your answer on a computer .

If you do end up experiencing technical issues, access the support page here .

Find IESE’s current application deadlines here .

If you submit your application early, you can submit your responses to IESE’s video essay questions at any time, as long as you make the final deadline.

The IESE video essay questions are grouped into three different categories, each with a different focus.

Question 1: Your Name

“Please tell us how we should pronounce your name.”

The first question IESE will ask you is how to pronounce your name. You will have 15 seconds to prepare and 20 seconds to answer.

Since this is a very straightforward question, don’t overthink it. Instead, make sure you clearly articulate the pronunciation of your name. If you find you have a little extra time and want to share the meaning behind your name, you can. But only if you can keep it super short!

Question 2: Introduce Yourself

The second question IESE asks gives you the chance to share who you are beyond your CV and admissions essays.

“ Please introduce yourself to the IESE MBA Admissions Team.” Consider this your opportunity to highlight your unique attributes and capabilities and show the IESE admissions team what makes you YOU!

Despite the innocent-seeming question, be careful about what you choose to show here .

Keep in mind that IESE prefers community-focused, globally-minded leaders, so don’t miss an opportunity to reinforce your personal brand and your fit with the school’s values. You should also focus on reinforcing elements of your profile that you might not have had a chance to explain elsewhere, such as volunteer work or a special skill you possess.

You do not need to speak about your goals or why you want to attend IESE. You’ve already written an essay on this topic, so there is no need to cover it again here.

Instead, make sure you focus on sharing an introduction that really helps you stand out!

Question 3: Randomized Question

For this question, there won’t be a specific prompt you can answer in advance. Instead, you’re going to receive a random behavioral-based question. This question may be focused on your characteristics, or it may allow you to share a professional example that highlights your personality traits.

The best advice for this section is to think about what it’s asking you and what you can show about yourself, your achievements, and your values.

If the question asks about your favorite book, the admissions committee will get a certain impression of you based on what you choose. If you choose a book that’s all about adventure, we’ll assume that’s important to you. If you choose a book about economics, we’ll assume that’s a key part of your life.

So think about how you want the admissions committee to learn about you beyond what you’ve already shared in your application.

If you get a question that’s more like a traditional behavioral interview question, try to draw on examples. Furthermore, make sure to show your human side and demonstrate that you genuinely care for others and want teams you join to succeed.

It can be easy to answer in a very conversational way, but doing so can often lead to an answer without a point, so make sure you use your planning time to structure the key elements of your answer.

Regardless, be careful about what you choose to show here. Keep in mind that IESE prefers globally-minded leaders who embrace diversity, so don’t miss an opportunity to reinforce your personal brand and your fit with the school’s values.

Here is a list of the types of questions you can expect.

  • Tell us about a time you took a risk. What did you learn?
  • If you were a team leader and you had a member who constantly under-delivered, what would you do?
  • Tell us about a time you experienced a professional failure. What did you learn from it?
  • Tell me about a time you worked with a dysfunctional team. How did you manage the situation?
  • Tell us about a conflict you have had with your boss/with a team at work. How did you manage to resolve it?
  • What accomplishment are you proudest of?
  • Tell us about an organization or activity to which you have devoted a significant amount of time. Why was it meaningful to you?
  • Tell us about a situation in which you were part of a dysfunctional team. What steps did you take to improve the situation?
  • What will your classmates be most surprised to learn about you?
  • What is the most challenging aspect of working in an internationally diverse environment?
  • What, in your opinion, is most challenging about studying in a diverse study group?
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • Tell us about a time a team member did not “pull his weight” in the team.
  • Who do you respect the most and why?
  • What is your favorite motto or quote, and why?
  • When you have a problem, who do you approach for advice and why?
  • What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
  • If you knew you could not fail, what would you do?
  • Tell us about a time you were introduced to a new culture. What did you gain from this experience?
  • How would your teammates describe you?
  • If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?
  • Why do you think you would excel working in a global environment?
  • What is the importance of diversity in the workplace?
  • What do you believe it takes to be a good leader?

Given the importance of the video essay in your IESE application , it’s crucial to make sure you don’t just have a good video essay, but that you have a great video essay.

Now that you’ve learned how the video essay will work, we’ve gathered our top 4 tips to ensure your video essay performance brings you one step closer to reaching your goal of attending IESE.

Tip 1: Be personable on camera

This is quite a specific skill to master, but with a bit of practice will get much easier.

My best tip for you is to practice recording yourself and time yourself as well. Go through the questions you have, take the allotted time to think and plan, and then record yourself for one minute.

If you mess up, keep going. You can’t stop and try again in the real thing, so don’t do it now. Continue your answer and fake confidence if necessary!

Then watch yourself back. Were you making eye contact with the camera? Did you smile? Did you look friendly? Bored? Annoyed? Scared?

Chances are the first few you do won’t be great but keep going.

You might also like to pretend you’re something of a TV presenter. This can help you to bring your personality forward and be more engaging. You don’t want to seem flat in the recording, so be a little bit brighter and friendlier than you think you need to be, and see how big of a difference it makes to your recordings.

Furthermore, be extremely careful with your tone of voice and body language. If you’re slumped over or look bored, the admissions committee will get the impression you’re not engaged with the task or, worse, that you’re not passionate about IESE!

This also goes for your tone of voice. Passion is contagious , but the last thing we think of when imagining a passionate person is a monotone, bored voice. So vary your tone of voice and make sure to project your passion for your interests and for IESE. If you’re not naturally good at this, you may want to seek out help from friends or record yourself multiple times until you’ve nailed the brief.

Tip 2: Be prepared to think on your feet

iese mba essays

With the timer counting down and no option to check your interviewer’s body language for subtle clues about how well your answer is being received, video essays can be incredibly challenging.

Even more so when you receive a question you weren’t prepared for!

Yet receiving a curveball question is no reason to panic, since the best way to handle this situation is through a mix of preparation and being spontaneous.

A good way to avoid completely drawing a blank is to have a few solid examples you’re ready to speak about and adapt.

For example, let’s say you recently worked on a project in a foreign country. You experienced culture shock while trying to adapt to the new city, faced linguistic challenges both in the office and in your daily life, and also had to mix up your work style to align with local expectations. This experience would be a fantastic “stock” answer to have ready since it brings in so many different topics that you can adapt the focus based on what the question asks.

So, in addition to preparing your answers to the list of questions we’ve prepared for you below, think back on your life and career and write a list of defining moments that are broad enough to be adapted to various questions and that show your fit with the IESE community and its values.

Then, during your thinking time, take a deep breath and plan out your answer.

While delivering your answer, don’t let the admissions committee in on the little secret that you got caught off guard! Answer confidently, using your tone of voice and body language to show off your winning personality and you’ll have successfully overcome the challenge!

TOP TIP : The admissions committee knows you’ll be a little nervous during the video essay, so don’t beat yourself up if you feel you portrayed this in your video essay. However, if you tend to get extremely nervous or freeze up, make sure to practice extra hard to make sure this doesn’t happen during your official recording.

Here at Ellin Lolis Consulting, we also offer video essay training sessions with our team of interview experts who focus on helping you adjust your body language and tone. Work with our MBA experts to get personalized help with your video essay!

Tip 3: Make sure you’re the protagonist

Another common mistake we see our clients make while drafting their video responses: maintaining too much focus on colleagues and teamwork rather than their own efforts. Especially because you have such limited time, you want to make sure that your response maximizes the number of insights that the viewer can learn about you, not your team members.

So, make sure you’re the protagonist of your answer. Of course, you can absolutely include stories involving teamwork and collaboration. However, when detailing your results and actions, don’t talk about what your team did, talk about your specific role within the team’s achievements. What did you contribute to the success, and how did this impact the overall results? What approaches and ideas did you come up with that might set you apart from other candidates? Answering these questions will ensure that you leave a memorable impression in the adcom’s minds.

Tip 4: Choose examples that add value to your application

Throughout the MBA application process , you’ve most likely brainstormed plenty of examples that illustrate your strengths, skills, and values .

Of course, you have probably used some of your proudest stories in your written essays already. And while these examples are surely impressive, it’s best to diversify your stories rather than let them overlap. In this context, that means using new examples for your video essay that don’t overlap with ones that you’ve used in other parts of your application.

Try to think of what you have already illustrated about yourself — what strengths, characteristics, skills, and values have you already shown in your written essays? Are you missing anything, or is there anything else that you think needs emphasized, especially when thinking about what the particular school is looking for?

Ultimately, you want to choose examples for your video essay that add additional value to your application. Use this as a strategic opportunity to show another aspect of yourself and your achievements that you haven’t been able to show in other parts of your application!

Record a video essay that gets you admitted

You have stressed about every aspect of your MBA application , and now you are ready to record your video essay! With the right preparation, this can be your chance to shine and get a highly-coveted spot at a prestigious business school.

However, maybe you don’t know where to start in preparing, or maybe you ramble and lose your focus while answering.

Our video essay prep focuses on helping you determine how to present yourself to the admissions committee while using appropriate, impact-driven language without being artificial, or worse, robotic.

I met Scott 3 years ago at an MBA fair in Paris. I decided to work with him for my round 2 applications and called him pretty late in the process. I was worried about my low GPA, my age and the price tag. From the initial meeting, Scott gave me non-sugarcoated advice about my candidacy. Working with Scott’s team was amazing. The team is highly professional. There were a lot of exchanges and I was pushed to think deeply on my career goals and the meaning of every sentence in my application documents. Be prepared to be challenged on that part. Towards the end of the preparation, the team checked how I felt about my work. I was very proud of the quality of my application! The interview prep was great too. I was asked the same questions I was asked during my real interviews (shout out to Nicole and Jacqueline!).

I applied to 2 US schools (CBS and Booth) and 1 European school, got admitted at both the US schools with scholarships, and haven’t received the European’s school response yet but I am pretty sure it will be a “yes.”

All in one, this outcome would never have been possible without Scott and his amazing team (I know it for sure since I applied round 1 with another consultant on an hourly basis, and looking back, I can confidently say that I messed these applications up).

Calling Scott was the best decision I made this year! Thank you, Scott, and the Personal MBA Coach team for this outcome!

I first met Scott at his PMC booth in an MBA tour. Coming from a non-traditional background, I had very limited knowledge in business/interaction with the MBA community. Scott walked me through my resume patiently and professionally; I then decided to work with PMC. Scott may initially suggest you apply for some top programs and some other programs to secure your seat in MBA. My advice to new applicants is: Don’t be discouraged to apply for your dream schools!

Because I was struggling to achieve a high GMAT score, he also offered a great GMAT coach with weeks of intensive lessons which helped me pass the threshold. I then started to focus on essay editing. PMC team is very professional that they know how to proofread your essay to make it presentable to the MBA admission officers; however, you have to prepare your own stories. They don’t feed you the fish but give you the pole to teach you how to fish.

In fact, I got one rejection and one waitlist last year (submitted in Round 3/4) and Scott instructed me to write a follow-up email, though I did not obtain a seat in the end (but perhaps left a good impression on the school). I am successfully admitted to two schools on my second try (applied by myself in Round 1 this time)! Looking back, I would not have gone this far without PMC team. I am truly glad I met Scott in the beginning of my MBA journey.

Great team. Really helpful. Helped me drill down my story and USP’s. Really good feedback on essays. The interview practice was great. Every answer was reviewed and feedback was given on the spot so I could easily make notes on how to improve.

Payment plans are available which enabled me to use the services. Scott is flexible. Although he is running a business, I got the impression that he cared about providing a service that would get the results I was looking for. He gives honest feedback, if he doesn’t think he can help you he will make this clear at the outset and suggest other options rather than just take your money without considering your desired outcomes.

I started working with Scott pretty late (November for January deadlines) in my application cycle and was worried that I may have left it too late but the team was really accommodating and reviewed my applications surprisingly quickly given the holiday season. The service was great and I would recommend it to anyone who can afford it.

If there was one thing I would suggest by way of improvement it would be to add an adcom specialist from a European School. I think that may set PMC apart from everyone else. To anyone reading this please don’t read this as they don’t know how to get you into a European school (I got into Oxford), I just think adding someone who has European experience will add something to the team.

Thanks to Scott, I am really happy with my results!

Unsure of the differences between the European and the US business schools, I first reached out to Scott for guidance on where to apply. From the initial school selection strategy brainstorming to deciding which school to ultimately attend, Scott was invaluable. Most impressive, his guidance on the letters of recommendation were incredible. London is incredible and LBS is a great experience.
