Samskrutha maha kaavyagalalli Karnaatakethihaasa – Karnataka history in Sanskrit Literature

Author:   Dr. Mallikurjuna Paraddi

In this essay, author has enumerated important works in Sanskrit literature that throw light on the history of India and in perticluar, the Karnataka region. Historical poems in Sanskrit are so full of mythological narration that A. B. Keith appears to be justifiable when he remarks as follows : ‘That in the whole of the great period of Sanskrit Literature, there is not even one writer, who can be seriously regarded as critical historian” (History of Sanskrit Literature, 144). Philosophical outlook of ancient Indians may be responsible for such a state of affairs i.e. to say that they attached more importance to achievements of individuals than to their personal life. Secondly, the authors were patronised by rulers and were after fame as poets. Such being the case, the author says it is rather difficult to expect them to be impartial and accurate in the narration of historical events. At the same time, one should not agree with the view that ancient Indian writers had no historical sense at all.

Following are three historical poems in Sanskrit that deal with Karnataka history.

(I) VikramankaDevaCharitam by Bilhana of Kashmir (Second half of 11 Century A.D.) deals in 18 cantos with the history of Chalukya Vikramaditya VI. Some of the events narrated in the poem are supported by inscriptional evidence.

(2) Madhuravijayam or ViraKamparayaCharitam by Gangadevi deals with the achievements iof Vijayanagar King Kampana or Harihar II (1362-1374).

(3) Saluvabhyudaya by Rajanatha Dindima (about 1480 A.D.) deals with the achievements of Saluva Narasimha of Vijayanagara dynasty who declared himself as independent King later in the era.

Author also lists other well known works in Sanskrit which throw light on the rulers of different dynasties across India.

1. NavaSaahasanka Charitha written by Parimala PadmaGupta during the early 11th century AD skecthes the history of Paramaara kings of Gujarat.

2. Kalhana’s Raja Tharangini gives the complete history of Kashmir till the time of the poet and is written in 12th century AD.

3. Jayaanakana’s Pruthviraja Vijaya gives history of Chouhan kings of Ajmer from 8th to 12th centuries specially focusing on Pruthvi Raj Chouhan. Written during 1191 – 1193 AD.

4. Hemachandra Soori’s Dwashraya Mahaa Kaavya written during 12th century gives history of Chalukya kings of Gujarat.

5.Someshwara deva’s Keerthi Koumudi gives life history of minister VastuPaala under the rule of Chalukya’s of Gurajat written the middle of 13th century.

6. AraSimha’s Sukrutha Sankeerthana also enumerates the Vasthupala’s life history.

7. BaalaChandraSuri Vasantha Vilasa also written on VastuPaala in the early 14th century.

8. Nayachandra Suri’s HammiraKavya written in 1494 gives the history of Chouhana Kings and expecially he life history of the King Hammira.

Art and culture of karnataka.

Mysore Painting in Karnataka Art and Culture

Earlier, painting involved not only the act itself but the entire process, from making one's colours to watching as they come to life. Paper, wood, cloth, etc. were some of the materials artists used as a base for their paintings. Brushes weren't made from synthetic materials but were made from the original hair of animals like camels, goat, and squirrel. The Mysuru style of paintings usually are representations of legends, mythical scenes, and the royal family. This style of painting from Karnataka is known for its simplicity and intricate detailing across the country. The artists used a particular gesso paste, consisting of zinc oxide and gum, which formed a protective layer on the painting, which has kept them undamaged even after 150 years. Karnataka is home to 50 different tribes, each having their traditions and customs. Tribal art is another indigenous art form. Hase Chitra mud painting is an art form emerging from the Shimoga and Karwar  districts and is currently being revived.

Languages of Karnataka

The diversity of Karnataka isn't just in its art and history but also in religious and linguistic ethnicity. Combined with their long histories, the cultural heritage of the state lies in its language. The Kannadigas envelope most of the state that comprises 30 districts, while Karnataka is also home to Kodavas, Tuluvas, and Konkanis.  Kannada Kannada is spoken as a native language by about 74% of the people of Karnataka. Kannadigas are the native speakers of Karnataka who form a dominant ethnic group. Being the administrative language of Karnataka, Kannada is considered as a classical language by the recommendations of linguistics experts and the government of India.  Tulu The native speakers of Tulu called Tuluvas also form a dominant ethnic community of Karnataka. Tuluvas cover most of Dakshina Karnataka, Udupi, Kasargod of Kerala which is often termed as Tulu Nadu. The Tuluvas form 2.38% of the total population of Karnataka.  Konkani The people who speak Konkani language are widely spread across Uttara Karnataka, Dakshina Karnataka and Udupi. In the region of Karwar taluk, Konkani speaker covers up to 78% of the population where a significant number of people are settled in Sirsi and Belgaum. According to the census of 1991, Konkani speakers are 1.78% of the population of Karnataka.  Kodava  Kodava language is probably one of the unheard languages of Karnataka with just 0.25% of native speakers. The Kodava people are settled in the Kodagu district of Karnataka. Apart from Kodavas, according to the Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy, there are 18 other ethnic groups who speak Kodava which includes Iri, Heggade, Banna, Koyava, Kembatti, Kudiya and Meda.  Urdu The second-largest ethnic group with 9.72% of the total population with a majority of speakers from the Muslim community. Although the Urdu speakers are unevenly distributed in Karnataka, about 43.5 % are bilingual who prefer speaking Kannada rather than Urdu.  Beary or Byari Beary or Byari is spoken by the Muslim communities of Dakshina Kannada and Udipi districts. This language has influences of Malayalam, Arabic and Kannada.

Music of Karnataka

The only state that flourishes with both Hindusthani music from North and Carnatic music from the south is Karnataka.  Hindusthani The Hindustani musicians of Karnataka have won several awards like the Kalidas Sanman, Padma Vibhusan and Padma Bhusan. Hence, Karnataka has achieved a prominent place in Hindusthani Music. Basavaraj Rajguru, Puttaraj Gawai, Sawai Gandharva are some famous performers to name a few.  Carnatic  Purandara Dasa is one of the prominent composers in Karnataka who composed close to 75,000- 745,000 songs in Kannada and Sanskrit. Owing to his contribution, he is considered as the Father of Carnatic Music. He became a source of inspiration to composers like Tyagaraja. Purandaradasa later laid down a framework to impart the knowledge of Carnatic music.

This Tiny Sanskrit Speaking Village in Karnataka Has at Least One IT Engineer in Every Family!

E nter any home in Mattur, and you will be greeted with Bhavatha nam kim  (What is your name?), Katham asti (How are you?) and Coffee va chaayam kim ichchhathi bhavan (What will you have, coffee or tea?) in eloquent and poetic sounding Sanskrit.

A village with one foot in the Vedic times and another in the 21st century, Mattur is one of the very few places in the world where residents still converse in the classical language of Sanskrit!

Tucked away in the verdant Shimoga district of Karnataka, Mattur is a tiny hamlet on the banks of the perennial river Tunga. The villagers of Mattur, who lead a Vedic lifestyle, chant the ancient texts and converse in Sanskrit, have made sure the ancient language flourishes in their village.

The journey back to Vedic roots started in 1981 when Sanskrita Bharati, an organisation that promotes the classical language, conducted a 10-day Sanskrit workshop in Mattur. It was attended, among others, by the seer of the Pejawar Mutt in nearby Udupi. Seeing the villagers eagerly take part in the unique experiment to preserve Sanskrit, the seer reportedly exclaimed, “A place where individuals speak Sanskrit, where whole houses talk in Sanskrit! What next? A Sanskrit village!” It was a call the residents of Mattur took to heart. This is how Sanskrit became the primary language of the village.

Mattur is an agrarian village that primarily cultivates areca nuts and paddy. It is inhabited by the Sankethis, an ancient  Brahmin community that had migrated from Kerala and settled down in Mattur about 600 years ago. Other than Sanskrit, they also speak a rare dialect called Sankethi, which is a mixture of Sanskrit, Tamil, Kannada, and bits of Telugu. The Sankethi dialect has no written script and is read in the Devanagari script.

The entire village of Mattur is built as a square, like a typical agraharam , with a central temple and a village pathshala. The Vedas are chanted at the pathshala  in the traditional way. The students learn them meticulously in their five-year course, under the careful supervision of village elders.

maxresdefault

The students at the  pathshala also collect old Sanskrit palm leaves, expand the script on computers and rewrite the damaged text in present day Sanskrit to make it available to the common man in the form of publications. Over the years, many students from abroad have also stayed and undergone crash courses at the pathshala to learn the language.

Everybody in Mattur, from the vegetable vendor to the priest, understands Sanskrit. Most speak the language fluently too. It is not unusual to see a group of elders reciting Vedic hymns by the riverside while a couple of young men zoom past them on their bikes, flaunting their mobile phones as they converse in the ancient language. Even young children squabbling and playing cricket in the ground speak Sanskrit fluently.

Another interesting sight is Sanskrit graffiti on the walls of the houses in Mattur. The slogans painted on the walls are ancient quotes such as  Maarge swachchataya virajate, grame sujanaha virajante (Cleanliness is as important for a road as good people are for the village). Some families also have the sign “You can speak Sanskrit in this house” proudly written on their doors.

The schools in Mattur have some of the best academic records in the district. According to the teachers, learning Sanskrit helps the students develop an aptitude for maths and logic as well. Many of Mattur’s young have gone abroad to study engineering or medicine and the village boasts of at least one software engineer in every family!

Mattur has produced  over 30 Sanskrit professors who are teaching in Kuvempu, Bengaluru, Mysore, and Mangalore universities. Mattur is also the home village of several illustrious personalities that include Mathoor Krishnamurthy of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore, violinist Venkataram, and gamaka exponent H.R. Keshavamurthy.

Mattur and its sister village, Hosahalli, are also known for their efforts to support the ancient tradition of  gamaka , a unique form of singing and storytelling in Karnataka.

gamaka

In gamaka , also known as  Kaavya Vaachana , a  gamaki (singer) reads a stanza of a poem with a high emphasis on meaning, in a raga (melody) that matches the emotion of the poem. Another person then explains the vyakyana or meaning of the stanza through examples and anecdotes. The ragas are drawn from traditional Kannada folk tunes and Carnatic music while the poems are mostly from old Kannada epics such as  Jaimini Bharatha , Harischandra Kavya ,  Ajita Purana , Devi-Bhagavata , and Torave Ramayana.

What makes Mattur so special is that at a time when Sanskrit is spoken by less than 1% of the country’s population, not only do the villagers use the language in their daily life but they are also ready to teach it to anyone interested in learning it. Their commendable effort will go a long way towards keeping the knowledge of this ancient and scientific language alive in the years to come.

ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯ Karnataka Samskrit University कर्नाटक संस्कृत विश्वविद्यालयः Pampa Mahakavi Road,Chamarajpet, Bangalore – 560 018.

Department of samskrit language and literature.

विना वेदं विना गीतां विना रामायणीकथां । विना कविं कालिदासं भारतं भा रतं नहि ॥

Sanskrit literature is as vast as the human life. There are four aims of human life which are called Purusharthas. They are Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha. Dharma stands for the duties and responsibilities of man. Artha communicates the monetary necessities, Karma stands for the human desires of all types and Moksha is freedom from birth and re-birth and worldly involvement. Any and every literature surrounds these four aims of human life. Sanskrit literature first of all presents Vedas which are the basis for Dharma.

Sanskrit is an ancient and classical language of India in which ever first book of the world Rigveda was compiled. The Vedas are dated by different scholars from 6500 B.C. to 1500 B.C. Sanskrit language must have evolved to its expressive capability prior to that. It is presumed that the language used in Vedas was prevalent in the form of different dialects. It was to some extent different from the present Sanskrit. It is termed as Vedic Sanskrit. Each Veda had its book of grammar known as Pratishakhya. The Pratishakhyas explained the forms of the words and other grammatical points. Later, so many schools of grammar developed. During this period a vast literature -Vedas, Brahmana-Granthas, Aranyakas, Upanishads and Vedangas had come to existence which could be termed as Vedic Literature being written in Vedic Sanskrit.

Valmiki was first to write the worldly poetry; Loka – Kavya. He wrote the Ramayana the great-epic which had the great impact on the later literature. Even today the latest poetry is written on the line of Valmiki. The Ramayana was written in 500BC. The second epic Mahabharata was written by Krishanadwaipayana Vyasa which is known as encyclopedia of knowledge. Later the Poets like Kalidasa, Ashvaghosa contributed considerably during the Gupta period. Bharavi, Bhatti, Kumardasa and Magha – all wrote Mahakaavyas. Harishena and Vatsabhatti were also prominent writers. Some other divisions of the classical literature and some names of the classical writers are: Kalhan and Bilhan in the field of historical Kavyas :Bhartrihari, Amaruka, Bilhana, Jayadeva, Somadeva etc. are famous as lyric poets. The Brihatkatha, Romantic and Didactic Fables, erotic poetry, champu kavyas, works on poetics and anthologies, gnomic and didactic poetry etc. form an unparalled part of Sanskrit literature.
