At the end of the registration, a cover letter will be automatically generated and attached to your application form. Please ensure to sign it. There are two places where you must put your signature to have your application processed.

Step 5. Submit Your Biometrics and Supporting Documents

Once you have your printed application ready and signed, you have to visit a Danish embassy or visa application centre in your country to submit your application form in addition to your supporting documents and provide your biometric information.

But to do this, you must first schedule a visa appointment.

Schedule Your Visa Appointment

Contact the Danish diplomatic missions (embassy or consulate) in your home country to book an appointment for your Schengen visa application. If an embassy or consulate is not available in your country, you can contact a visa application centre.

Remember: you have already selected where you will submit your application when you initially started your online application.

The Danish government has outsourced visa applications in some countries to VFS Global. So, to schedule an appointment, head to the visa application centre’s website , choose the country you are from (e.g., India, Egypt, etc.), and choose the country you are going to, which in this case is Denmark. From there, you can book an appointment with VFS Global to submit your application.

When Should I Make My Appointment?

You are allowed to schedule your appointment for a visa submission a minimum of 15 days before your travel date and a maximum of 6 months before your travel date. That being said, we advise you to set an appointment one to three months prior to your travel date. This will allow enough time to have your visa processed, as well as account for any possible delays that may happen during the processing of your visa.

How Can I Change or Cancel My Appointment?

To change your appointment or cancel it altogether, you must contact the designated visa application centre where you made your initial appointment:

  • If applying through VFS, you can cancel your appointment online via the website where you scheduled your appointment. Some VFS offices will also have an option to reschedule your appointment to a later date.
  • If applying through a Danish embassy, you must send an email to the embassy/consulate requesting a cancellation. Some Danish embassies will have an email posted on their websites where you can request a cancellation or a reschedule.

Remember that you can only change or cancel your appointment before your actual appointment date and not on the same day.

Prepare the Required Documents

Along with your application form, you need to prepare a number of required documents to submit a valid Schengen visa application for Denmark:

  • The Danish Schengen Visa application form.
  • Proof of purchased travel insurance meeting the Schengen insurance guidelines.
  • An invitation letter if someone or a company is inviting you.
  • All other general requirements for a Schengen visa.

Please note that your host in Denmark must submit an online invitation letter which can differ based on who is inviting you, either an individual or an organisation/company.

When your host submits the invitation letter, you will have an ID code for the letter, which you must provide during the filling out of the online application form as follows:

Your host must submit their invitation letter via the official website of the Danish government, “ New to Denmark ”

*The Danish embassy might require additional documents.

Understanding the Requirement for Travel Insurance

Travel Medical Insurance is compulsory for Schengen visas under Regulation (EU) 2009/810 of the European Parliament.

Danish visa applicants can obtain visa insurance from either Europ Assistance or vti.travel , a European insurance comparison website, comparing insurance policies of AXA, Allianz, Europ Assistance and Mutuaide.

These insurance providers are acknowledged and accepted by Danish Embassies and Consulates worldwide. Moreover, you can cancel the insurance at no cost by submitting proof of Danish visa rejection.

How Much Money Do I Need to Get a Denmark Schengen Visa?

To obtain a Schengen visa to Denmark, you must provide evidence of having at least DKK 350 or approx. €47 per day to spend in the country for the duration of your stay. Keep in mind that this required amount increases to DKK 500 or approx. €67 if you’re staying in a hotel.

You will also be required to submit proof of enough financial resources to return home, i.e., proof of purchased return ticket.

Attend Your Appointment

Arrive at the Danish embassy or consulate or the visa application centre in your home country at the time of your appointment, and make sure to bring your documents with you.

Biometric Data

When you arrive at the embassy or visa application centre, you are required to submit your biometric information, which means giving your fingerprints and identity photographs. Applicants under the age of 12 are exempt from the biometric data requirement. Additionally, you may also be exempt if you already gave your fingerprints for a prior Schengen visa application sometime in the last five years.

If you know the dates when you last gave your biometric data, you will be required to provide this information when you fill out the online application form.

Proof of Paid Fee

On the day of your visa appointment, please bring proof of having paid your visa application fee; you need to bring your payment slip which will be generated at the end of your visa application. You are required to complete this step during the finalization of your online application.

Please note that if you apply via a visa application centre, you may incur additional service charges.

Attend the Visa Interview

On the same day of your visa appointment; you are required to sit down for a brief interview to answer a few questions about your travel plans to Denmark. Please answer all the questions carefully and honestly.

Check out which are some of the most common mistakes to avoid during your interview.

Can Someone Else Apply on My Behalf?

Someone else can apply on your behalf if you’ve given them permission to do so, and you are not required to submit your biometric information.

Wait for the Visa to Process

It typically takes 15 working days for your application to be processed, but it can take up to 30 days or more, depending on the workload of the embassy and whether something is missing from your application. Please note that the embassy or consulate will start to process your application when you submit it in person

Track Your Application

To see the status of your application, you can log in to your account at “ ApplyVisa ” and go to “ My Applications ,” there you will see the information when you will be entering and departing Denmark, and the status of your application as follows:

cover letter for denmark visa

Receiving a Positive Decision

If your visa application is approved, you will be notified about the status of your application, and you will have information about when and where you can collect your passport. After, you’ll be free to enter Denmark as per the validity of your visa.

Receiving a Negative Decision

Your visa can be refused as a result of different reasons , e.g., insufficient financial means, concerns about fraudulent documents, etc. If your visa is denied, you will receive a denial notice which contains the grounds for the denial.

In this case, you can either appeal against the decision or reapply for the visa, but this time you must address the issues that caused your initial denial in the first place.

How Can I Appeal Against a Decision?

Depending on who processed your application, you can submit an appeal request to the Danish Immigration Service, the Immigration Appeals Board, or the Ministry of Immigration and Integration. You will find this information all written on your denial notice, along with how to appeal and whether there is a time limit for the appeal.

If your visa is denied by a Danish representative (an embassy or consulate), you can submit an appeal request to the Immigration Service within 8 weeks from the date when you received your refusal.

Please note that if you submitted your application to another Schengen embassy/consulate representing Denmark in your country of residence, then you must follow the appeal procedure of that country.

Can I Get a Refund of the Visa Fee?

No, the visa application fee you pay during your application cannot be refunded even if your visa is denied.

That being said, you can withdraw your payment as long as the embassy or visa application centre has not started to process your application . To do so, you must send a request to the Danish embassy or consulate in your country, where you can use the following text as a template (although it’s not a mandatory requirement):

_________”

Collect Your Passport

Once you receive your approval notice, you can collect your passport, which has your visa attached to it as a sticker. You can usually pick it up in person at the embassy or visa application centre where you apply, but if you apply via an external provider, like VFS Global, you can opt to have your passport sent to you by courier. But keep in mind that this service may incur additional charges.

How to Enter Denmark?

Upon approval of your Denmark Schengen visa, your passport will be returned to you with a visa sticker attached. The Danish mission includes an extra 15 days as a grace period for the visa’s validity, which may differ from the dates on the sticker. This means the validity period and the allowed duration of stay shown on the visa sticker will differ.

To enter Denmark, follow these steps:

  • Verify the accuracy of the details on your visa sticker, including your name, validity dates, and passport number. Contact the Danish mission or visa application centre if you find any errors.
  • Enter Denmark within the validity period specified on your visa sticker.
  • Your passport with the visa sticker attached.
  • A return or onward ticket.
  • Evidence of sufficient financial means.
  • Proof of travel health insurance.
  • Confirmation of accommodation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can i visit greenland and the faroe islands with a denmark schengen visa.

Yes, you can travel to Greenland and the Faroe Islands with a Denmark Schengen visa. But, although Greenland and the Faroe Islands belong to the Kingdom of Denmark, they are not part of the Schengen Area. Therefore, a Schengen visa grants access to Denmark but not automatically to these areas.

To enter Greenland and the Faroe Islands, you require a visa that specifically mentions these locations. If your travel plans include these, notify the Danish embassy or consulate when you apply for a Denmark Schengen visa so they can issue the visa with the appropriate endorsements.

What is the validity of a Schengen Denmark visa?

Generally, the Schengen visa allows you to stay up to 90 days in a 180-day period for things like tourism or business. However, the length of a Denmark Schengen visa can change based on your travel plans and reasons for visiting.

The Danish embassy or consulate decides how long your visa is valid when you apply, considering your travel schedule.

What if I overstay my visa?

If you stay in Denmark or any other Schengen country longer than your visa permits, you could face serious consequences . These might include having to pay a fine, being banned from coming back to the Schengen Area for a while, possibly being sent back to your country, and finding it harder to get visas in the future.

Can I visit other Schengen countries with a Danish visa?

If you have a Schengen visa, you’re allowed to visit other countries in the Schengen Area freely. Just remember, you can’t stay for more than 90 days in any 180-day period.

Can I travel to non-Schengen countries with a Danish Schengen visa?

Yes, besides visiting Schengen Area Member States, you can also travel to some countries outside the European Union and the Schengen Area with a Schengen visa.

Can I work in Denmark with a Schengen visa?

No, holding a Schengen visa doesn’t permit you to engage in paid work in Denmark. This visa is meant for short visits only. To work in Denmark, you need to secure a work visa.

Is It Possible to Extend My Denmark Schengen visa?

Extending a Schengen visa is only possible in special circumstances such as force majeure, humanitarian reasons, or personal reasons (death or illness of a family member). To do so while you are in Denmark, you must submit a request for an extension of stay to the Danish Immigration Service’s Citizen Service.

Before you can submit your request for an extension, you must book an appointment online with an office of the Immigration Service in the area where you are staying in Denmark.

How to Apply for a Denmark Visa?

Step by step guide to applying for a Denmark visa

If you are thinking about applying for a Denmark visa, you must be informed about the visa application process beforehand. To get an easy and quick application process read the conditions and make sure you meet all the requirements.

You must fill in and sign a visa application form, collect a set of documents, and submit them at the nearest Danish embassy/consulate or a visa application center in your country of residence. Your visa application must be submitted at least 15 days before you plan to travel.

Where Can I Apply for a Denmark Visa?

You can apply for a Denmark visa at one of the following:

  • The nearest Danish embassy or consulate.
  • The embassy/consulate of another Schengen state, to which the embassy of your destination country has outsourced visa submission.
  • A visa application center.

There are 66 Denmark mission offices abroad. You must submit your application at the embassy or consulate responsible for your country or area of legal residence. Find them here .

Here is how to apply for a Denmark visa:

  • Book an appointment.
  • Fill in the application form.
  • Pay the visa fee.
  • Submit your documents and biometrics.

Step 1. Book an Appointment

You must contact the Danish embassy/consulate to set up an appointment. You should set up your appointment at least two weeks before you plan to travel since it takes about 15 days to hear a decision. If it is during the holiday season, you have to apply even more in advance.

If the embassy has outsourced visa applications to a visa application center, then you have to set an appointment with the visa agency. They will collect your documents and submit the application to the embassy on your behalf.

In certain cases, you can also book your appointment online at the visa application website of the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Step 2. Fill in the Application Form

You must fill in a visa application form with your personal and background informatio n before applying for a Denmark visa. The application form is usually available to download from the website of the Danish embassy/consulate or can be completed through the official Danish visa application website.

You must answer every question and fill in all the gaps.

Step 3. Pay the Visa Fee

The fee for the Denmark visa application is:

  • €90 (standard fee)
  • €45 (for children between the age of 6 and 11 years)
  • €35 (for countries with visa-facilitation agreements: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Russian Federation, Ukraine, Montenegro, Serbia, and Moldova)

Step 4. Submit Your Documents and Biometrics

Yes, you can set an appointment, pay the visa fee, and complete the application form online. However, you still have to hand in your documents in person at the Danish embassy or consulate.  You will have to personally contact the Danish embassy/consulate in your country to find their preferred method of application.

After you log in to your new user account, click on ‘individual application’ if you are traveling alone or ‘group application’ if you are traveling in a group. You can apply 6 months before your trip. Your data will be saved and won’t be deleted when you log out.

How Is The Process for a Denmark Schengen Visa and Long-Term Visa Different?

A Schengen visa allows you entry into Denmark or another Schengen country for a short-term stay, tourism, business, or family visits. On the other hand, a long-stay visa allows you to stay in Denmark for up to a year and can be extended for even longer. Based on your reason for applying, you can get a long-stay visa for work, education, or family reunification.

If you are granted a long-term visa, you need to apply for a residence and work permit since you will be staying for a long time, whereas for a Schengen visa, it is not mandatory to have a residence permit.

Visa information:

Visas are granted for stays up to 90 days. Denmark is covered by the Schengen cooperation. Visas issued by Danish embassies are normally valid for all Schengen countries.

An application for a Schengen visa can be handed in no earlier than six months prior to the intended entry into the Schengen area. For seafarers in the performance of their duties, a nine months rule apply.

If the applicant is travelling to the Schengen area several times within a period of two months, the applicant must apply to the Schengen country, which constitutes the main destination. The main destination is either where the applicant intends to spend the longest time or where the main purpose of the intended visit is carried out.

Job Search in Denmark Part 3: Your Danish cover letter, plus LinkedIn, plus two magic words

In the era of online applications, face-to-face networking, and LinkedIn profiles, the Danish cover letter is a bit of a lost art.

Probably your future employer will ‘meet’ you via one of these other channels before they ever read the letter that is supposedly introducing you.

But it’s still worth writing, because it’s a chance to set the experience on your cv in the context of the job on offer.

For example, I met a woman who had spent her entire career in the telecom industry – and really wanted to try something else. Although her cv showed one telecom job after another, her cover letter was a great place to explain why she was applying for a job in a different industry and how her experience could be useful there.

A good cover letter is particularly useful if you’re a new arrival in Denmark, a new graduate, or going for a job that isn’t an obvious fit with what you’ve already done.

Keep it short Your letter should be short , direct, and with no mistakes in grammar and spelling. Even if your future job is not in the communications industry, a flawless cover letter gives you a chance to show you care about thoroughness and care about quality, both of which are points of pride in Denmark. (I recommend fiverr.com , where native speakers will proofread your English or Danish for as little as US$5)

Three short paragraphs should be enough to describe who you are and why you want this particular job with this particular company.

If you’re newly arrived in Denmark, you can also use your cover letter to explain why you chose this place over others. Danes love their country and are proud of it; it certainly won’t hurt to show that you like it too, and are not just an opportunist who will take a job anywhere if it offers a good paycheck.

The traditional Danish letter style dispenses with annoying salutations like “Dear Sirs/Madams”. Instead, it has a subject line on top, a bit like an email. You can use this to your advantage. A line like Skilled juggler with 2 decades of experience in circus acrobatics is certainly a more eye-catching start to a letter than the old-fashioned “To Whom it May Concern.”

But first… Let’s scroll back for a minute, though. As I said, the cover letter is probably not your first encounter with an employer.

Many Danish job ads contain the phone number of the hiring manager, who is often the exact person you will be working for if you get the job.

This is an opportunity for you to call, introduce yourself, and ask an intelligent question about the job. (Yeah, an intelligent question – nothing that’s already in the job description or something you can find out on the company’s website.)

Please, please find a quiet room where your future employer can hear what you are saying – I have had people call me from train stations with trains whizzing by, or from coffee shops with Beyoncé’s latest hit pumping in the background.

Approach the hiring manager along these lines: “This is (your name here). I understand that you’re the hiring manager for the (job name), and I’m interested, but I have a couple of questions. Is now a good time?”

Assuming the hiring manager is not halfway through her lunch or on her a way to a meeting, you can then take 5-10 minutes of her time with a few questions that are directly relevant to the position, such as the team structure, travel requirements or management responsibilities.

Please ask about things that relate to the work at hand, not whether you can get off early on Fridays because you play tennis or if its OK that you already have vacation planned for the company’s busiest season.

If the answers (and the boss) are to your liking, you can reference the conversation in the first paragraph of your cover letter. Just to make sure the contact is fresh in her memory, I recommend sending your application within 24 hours of having spoken to the hiring manager.

But even before that… Before your cover letter, and before you approach a hiring manager, you should have your LinkedIn profile in order. When it comes to social media, Danes use Facebook mostly for social purposes and are indifferent about Twitter, but they love LinkedIn.

Anyone who is serious about doing business and finding a job in Denmark should polish his or her LinkedIn profile like a diamond.

An excellent business profile photo, as we discussed in Job Hunting in Denmark Part 2: Putting together your Danish cv is a must. Your job title should be packed full of the kind of search words recruiters will type in when they’re looking for someone like you – the more specific, the better.

(I get so mad when I see someone just write “Engineer.” No, you’re an Environmental Engineer specializing in Wastewater Purification .)

When it comes to the jobs you’ve had, don’t just list your title and dates of employment. Go into details about the projects you’ve worked on and the products, materials and teams you’ve worked with. Tell a little story about your time on the job and what you learned there. Unlike a cv, LinkedIn profiles don’t have to be a dry collection of bullet points.

LinkedIn even has a great ‘portfolio’ feature to put up documentation of some of the work you’ve already done – photos, newspaper articles, videos, short project summaries, whatever you’ve got.

It helps make your work experience come alive and seem more concrete, particularly if most of it consists of work done outside of Denmark.

Writing updates helps establish your name LinkedIn also allows you to post short Facebook-style updates, which you can use to share information about what’s going on in your field.

These posts put your name in the news feeds of all the great new industry contacts you built up during Looking for jobs in Denmark Part 1: Fine-tuning your approach to the Danish job market . They keep your name fresh in their minds so they remember you when a job needs to be filled. If you’re a gifted writer, you can even do longer LinkedIn blog post about some topic of interest in your business. This helps establish you as a local ‘expert.’

There’s a good chance your future employer will find you via your LinkedIn profile. Even if he doesn’t, he’ll probably look at your profile after he reviews your cv and cover letter.

A great profile could prompt him to call you for a meeting, which is what we’ll discuss in our posting on The Danish Job Interview .

Two magic words When I give presentations to job-hunters in Denmark , I tell them there are two words you can add to your cover letter that will virtually guarantee that it will be carefully read.

What are those two words?

The name of someone you know who already works at the company.

Of course, you should only use a current employee’s name with his or her permission, and ask each time you use it. There’s always the chance that your contact and this particular hiring manager may be bitter enemies, or that a company is so vast (say, Novo Nordisk) that a recommendation from a scientist won’t have much impact on the hiring of an accountant.

But if your contact is the same or a similar department, knows the company’s culture and priorities, and thinks you’re a good fit, the hiring manager will at least take the time to look through your application and see if she agrees.

At the very least, she’ll feel she might have to explain to her co-worker why she doesn’t agree. Denmark is a little job market, so people are careful not to offend their business contacts.

That means your letter and cv will get a little extra attention.

Guide to Denmark Entry Requirements & Visa Application

Embarking on a journey to Denmark, the enchanting Nordic realm entails more than packing your bags for an adventure across its historical landscapes and modern cities. As a member of the European Union and signatory to the Schengen Agreement, Denmark offers streamlined entry processes for many, but understanding the intricacies of visa requirements is crucial for a hassle-free travel experience. This comprehensive guide delves into Denmark’s entry requirements, visa types, and application procedures, ensuring you’re well-prepared for your Danish adventure.

Denmark and Its Territories

Denmark is not just its mainland; it encompasses the Faroe Islands and Greenland, each offering unique landscapes and cultural experiences:

Metropolitan Denmark: The main part of the country, located in Europe.

Faroe Islands: A group of islands in the North Atlantic, known for their rugged scenery.

Greenland: The world’s largest island, located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, is known for its massive ice cap.

Denmark’s European Integration and Schengen Membership

Denmark has been a part of the EU since 1973 and a member of the Schengen Area since 2001, which allows for passport-free travel across multiple European countries, enhancing the ease of travel for tourists and business visitors alike.

Exploring Denmark’s Marvels

Despite its modest size, Denmark is packed with attractions ranging from the historical splendors of Frederiksborg Palace to the modernist designs of Copenhagen, the playful spirit of Legoland in Billund, and the serene beaches of Skagen.

Entry Requirements: What You Need to Know

For EU nationals, a valid identification document is sufficient for entry thanks to the Schengen Agreement. Non-EU travelers, however, must adhere to more stringent requirements:

Valid Passport: Must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from Schengen, issued within the last ten years.

Schengen Visa: Required for many non-EU travelers, depending on your country of origin.

Border Queries and Entry: What to Expect

When you arrive in Denmark, be ready for a brief interview at the border where an officer will ask about your trip’s purpose, how long you plan to stay, and where you’ll be staying. If the officer is satisfied that you pose no risk, you’ll be allowed into the Schengen area. Make sure your passport gets stamped; not having it stamped can lead to fines or detention.

Schengen Visa Requirements: Who Needs One?

To enter Denmark and the Schengen Zone, certain non-EU travelers must obtain a Schengen Visa. This includes:

Nationals from Countries Without Visa Liberalization Agreements: Individuals from countries that do not have agreements with the Schengen area for visa-free travel need to apply for a visa.

Nationals from Visa Liberalization Countries Who Were Previously Denied Entry: If you are from a country that typically does not require a visa to enter the Schengen Zone but have been denied entry to Denmark or any Schengen state in the past, you will need to obtain a Schengen Visa for future travels.

Types of Visas and Their Purposes

  • Tourist/Visitor Visa: For those visiting Denmark for leisure or to visit friends and family.
  • Business Visa: For individuals engaging in business-related activities.
  • Transit Visa: Necessary for some nationalities passing through Danish airports.
  • Cultural, Sports, and Film Crew Visas: For participants in cultural, sports, or filming events.

Crafting a Visa Application

To craft a successful Danish Schengen Visa application, ensure you include these essential documents:

  • Completed Danish Visa Application Form: Fill out accurately with all required details.
  • Two Recent Passport Photos: Must meet the specific photo requirements for Danish Schengen visas.
  • Valid Passport: Ensure it is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area and has been issued within the last ten years.
  • Copies of Previous Schengen Visas: If you have previously traveled to the Schengen area, include copies of those visas.
  • Cover Letter: Write a clear and structured cover letter that outlines the purpose of your visit and includes a detailed itinerary.
  • Round-trip Flight Itinerary: Provide details of your entry to and exit from Denmark.
  • Proof of Accommodation: Confirm where you will stay during your visit, such as hotel bookings or a letter from your host.
  • Proof of Financial Means: Show that you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay. This could include bank statements or a letter from a sponsor.
  • Travel Insurance: Obtain travel insurance covering at least €30,000 for medical emergencies in the Schengen area.

Including these documents in your visa application will help ensure a smooth process and increase the likelihood of approval. Make sure all documents are current, clear, and valid as per the visa requirements.

Tailoring Requirements Based on Profile

Here are additional documents you may need to include, depending on your employment and social status:

Employed Individuals:

  • Employment Contract: A copy of your current employment contract.
  • Recent Bank Statement: A statement showing recent transactions to reflect financial stability.
  • Leave Permission: An official document from your employer granting leave for the duration of your trip.
  • Income Tax Records: Documents that show your income and taxes paid, providing evidence of economic ties to your home country.
  • Self-Employed:
  • Business License: A copy of the business license as proof of business ownership.
  • Company Bank Statement: Recent bank statement showing business transactions.
  • Income Tax Records: Proof of income and tax filings related to your business.
  • Proof of Enrollment: Document from your educational institution confirming your enrollment status.
  • No-Objection Certificate: A letter from your educational institution stating there are no objections to your planned travel.
  • Pension Statement: Recent pension statements that demonstrate financial stability during retirement.

Embarking on the Application Process

To start your application for a Danish Schengen Visa, follow these essential steps:

Determine Where to Apply: Choose the application center based on your current residence. This could be the Danish Embassy, a Consulate, or a Visa Application Center (VAC) in your country.

Choose the Appropriate Visa Type: Select the visa type that best matches the purpose of your visit (e.g., tourism, business, family visit, cultural events).

Compile Required Documents: Gather all the necessary documents tailored to the specific visa type you are applying for. This typically includes your passport, proof of financial means, travel itinerary, accommodation details, and travel insurance.

Schedule a Visa Interview: Make an appointment for your visa interview at the designated Danish Embassy, Consulate, or VAC.

Attend the Interview and Submit Your Application: Go to your scheduled interview, bringing all required documents and additional supporting materials. Submit your complete application at this time.

Extending Your Danish Schengen Visa

In exceptional cases, you can extend your Danish Schengen visa. Applications should be submitted to the relevant Danish residence authority, adhering to specific regional requirements.

Understanding Visa Fees and Duration for Danish Schengen Visas

When planning your trip to Denmark, it’s crucial to consider the costs and rules associated with obtaining a Schengen Visa:

Adults: €80

Children (6-12 years): €40

Children (under 6 years): Free

These fees are standard across Schengen countries and must be paid when you submit your visa application.

Visa Duration and the 90/180 Rule:

A Schengen Visa typically allows you to travel and stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within 180 days. This is known as the 90/180 rule.

It’s important to calculate your stay correctly to ensure compliance with this rule. You can stay for up to 90 days in any 180 days, which means you need to track the dates of entry and exit carefully to avoid overstaying.

Understanding these fees and regulations is vital for planning your budget and itinerary, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable visit to Denmark and the Schengen Area.

Provisions for US Citizens

US citizens enjoy visa-free travel to Denmark for up to 90 days for tourism and business purposes. A valid US passport with at least six months’ validity from the date of entry is mandatory.

Unlocking Greenland and Faroe Islands

While both Greenland and the Faroe Islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark, they maintain separate entry requirements. Travelers must apply for specific visas if they intend to visit these territories.

Equipped with the right knowledge about visa requirements and application processes, your trip to Denmark should be nothing short of spectacular. Whether you’re drawn to its historical roots, vibrant culture, or stunning natural beauty, Denmark promises an enriching experience for every traveler.

Your Cover Letter

The purpose of your cover letter or motivation letter is to make the employer want to meet you. Explain what you have to offer and be specific. It will improve your chances of getting noticed

No more than one page long, your cover letter should outline why you are the right person for the position. Rather than simply listing your CV merits, try to make connections between what the company asks for in the job listing and your own skills and experience. This is your chance to show the employer why you are the best person for the job. The primary purpose of your job application is to make the employer want to meet you for a job interview. A cover letter is often just as important as a CV in Denmark when you apply for a job. It is important to write a cover letter specifically tailored for each position you apply for. This video shortly explains how to write a good cover letter that catches the attention of Danish employers.

How to Write a Cover Letter

What do danish recruiters expect, when reading your application.

Recruiters look for the perfect match to their vacant job. It is your task to make sure that the recruiter understands how you match the requirements. We have gathered a few essential points from recruiters and hiring managers in Denmark that we will share with you.

How to Identify and Respond to Keywords in a Job Advertisement

The responsibilities and requirements or qualifications sections are usually the core of the job ad. Recruiters spend time identifying the main qualifications needed. They map out existing skills in the team to find out if one or more skills are lacking. A new employee could very likely bring missing skills to the company or the team. Therefore, recruiters spend time making sure that the job ad reveals what to expect from the job. The company wants to attract the right person with the right skills, - someone who will be happy in the job and hopefully stay in the company for a longer period of time. Recruiters communicate this to you by use of  keywords  in the job ad. Now it is your job to help the recruiter understand that you have the right qualifications, by doing the following:

  • Identify the key requirements – the necessary skills – and respond to them carefully. You might want to list the requirements into two groups: hard and soft skills. Hard skills are teachable and measurable abilities that are easy to quantify such as your degree or certificate, machine operating or the ability to use computer programs. In Denmark, recruiters expect you to start with mentioning the hard skills. E.g. if you are an engineer, you will want to mention that as soon as possible. After you have mentioned the hard skills, you can focus on the soft skills. Soft skills are subjective skills that are hard to quantify. They are also known as people skills or interpersonal skills. Soft skills are the traits that mark who you are as a colleague or employee such as communication skills, team work ability or your role as a team leader. Please note: in your cover letter, recruiters expect you to not just mention the skills. Instead, you are meant to demonstrate that you possess a skill by sharing examples of when you used it. It is OK if you do not meet all of the qualifications listed in the job ad. If you meet just some of the qualifications, you can still apply for the job, provided that you can convince the reader that you match these completely. Ideally, you should demonstrate this by using specific examples from your previous work experience. It will be worth your while to mention and identify comparable or transferable skills or experiences. For example, if the job requires R programming skills, you can state that you are proficient in Python and by knowing this you will quickly be able to learn.
  • Remember to include your motivation in your cover letter. Generally speaking, Danish employers believe that if you like your job and if you feel happy when at work, you will perform better. Try to think about these questions: • Why are you applying for this specific job? If you can state that you really like working with certain tasks, please do so. • Why do you think you are a good match to the job? • Why do you want to work for this particular company? Remember: Do not focus on what you can gain from being hired, but what the company can gain from hiring you . Try to put yourself in the shoes of the recruiter. Do you match the key elements of the job? Is it easy for the recruiter to see how you match the requirements? Have you explained your motivation for applying for the job? If you can answer yes to these three questions, you are well on your way.

Here Are Six Guidelines on How to Make Your Cover Letter Stand Out From The Crowd

  • Explain what you have to offer: See things from the employer’s perspective. Focus on what you can offer. Let them know your competences, also the soft competences that are relevant for the job, and especially the ones, which may be more special in Denmark than in your home country (e.g. your language skills). Besides your professional competences, such as technical or economic skills, be sure to include your social competences, such as negotiation or teaching skills, and last but not least your personal competences which round up your profile. In Denmark, it is essential to show a complete picture of yourself: an employer will be interested not only in your diplomas, but also in your personality and your interests. In short: what drives and motivates you.
  • Address the criteria in the job ad: Describe how you fulfil the criteria specified in the ad. Be specific when you translate your experiences and personal qualities to match the job criteria. If in doubt – simply answer the key words from the job ad.
  • Include your motivation: Tell the employer why you are interested in the job, and be precise in explaining your motivation for wanting this job. Most employers believe that if you really like your job, you will perform better which benefits the company.
  • Find a suitable style: Write your application in a style that matches the type of company you are addressing. For instance, your style will be more informal and creative when applying for a job at an advertising agency than a financial institution.
  • Write with clarity and precision: Avoid long and complex sentences. Use shorter paragraphs and break up your application in sections. An application should be no longer than one A4 page.
  • Avoid mistakes: Always check your application for language errors – particularly if you are not writing in your mother tongue. If possible, get another person to proofread your application carefully. Mistakes suggest sloppiness and no employer responds positively to that.

Cover Letter for Denmark Student Visa

The flourishing education system of Danish universities can be attributed to its characteristics of advanced study facilities and an informal yet developing learning environment that supports critical thinking. Year by year, the number of students who are making this country their study-abroad destination is increasing exponentially. A careful look at the course structure will make anyone realize that they are all crafted to suit the needs and demands of the professional work field. However, to enjoy these benefits you have to seek admittance into the country by receiving a study permit from the embassy of Denmark based in your native country. As and when you file for a visa request, it is expected that you will provide the embassy with a cover letter written in your voice. If you are someone who is coming across this term for the first time then you must know that a cover letter for student visa is an application that conveys to the visa officials your intent and motive behind wishing to study in a Danish University. This ‘intent and motive’ is expressed with the help of certain points that make up the ‘structure of a cover letter’. Abiding by this structure will be a convenient way to ensure that you cover all the required points. However, the quality of a cover letter is not just limited to its content. The writing tone & style, choice of words, and format too are of utmost importance. A reliable way of ensuring that your cover letter for Denmark student visa stands tall on all these accounts is by availing professional support from our Cover Letter Writing Services at Contentholic , which have been helping students with their cover letter for visa application for more than 13 years now!

Direction to write a standard cover letter for student visa

A brief yet constructive introduction –

The introductory paragraph of your cover letter for Denmark student visa sets the reading tone of your entire application. The purpose of this paragraph is to inform the visa official of the course and university to which you have applied after writing your complete name and passport number. In another 2-3 lines maximum express your enthusiasm for your purpose.

Personal and academic Knowledge –

Be precise when discussing your personal self (personality and family details). Your academic information entails your institute name, subject interests, marks & achievements, noteworthy projects, and assignments, etc.

Work experiences that highlight your skills –

All internships and jobs that you have done/are doing count as your work experience. While writing your cover letter for student visa your emphasis should be on the skills that you have learned. For eg. When a student of dental studies writes about the medical procedures they are adept at performing (root canals, extractions, fillings, crowns, etc.), the standard of their application elevates greatly.

Basis of choosing your course and University-

Share a personal story about how you developed an interest or motivation to study your course. It can be a teacher’s influence, good career scope, expertness in subject concepts, or several other reasons. Similarly, the basis on which you chose your academic institution. Shed light on the factors that attracted you. Most Danish Universities themselves give you reasons for how their university hopes to help you with the course information provided on their websites.

Denmark as an educational destination for you –

State the points that encouraged you to make Denmark the place where you would pursue your higher studies. Sure, there are numerous general points to support your statement like affordable tuition fees, safety, study-work-life balance, etc. However, as you write your cover letter for Denmark student visa , try to customize all your points on how these benefits can favor you personally.

Career objectives in your chosen field –

Some students might find it a little far-fetched to write about expected career prospects in their cover letter. Its importance lies in understanding that your career goals will help the visa officers understand how you hope to benefit from your education in Denmark. Thus, try to show a connection between your course learnings and professional aspirations.

Motivation to return to native country –

The visa official hopes to see a trustworthy explanation for why you have to return to your own country upon the conclusion of your course in Denmark. Indirectly, it is your responsibility to assure them that you are not looking for permanent immigration.

Financial Prowess to fund your studies –

Depending on your course and the facilities that will be provided by your prospective universities, education in Denmark can cost you 6,000 to 16,000 euros per year. As a student, your role is to show that you or your sponsor has sufficient finances to not just deposit your tuition fees but also take care of accommodation, travel, and lifestyle costs.

Wrapping up the application –

The conclusion of your cover letter should be written with a similar enthusiasm as you have written the rest of your document. Summarize the purpose for why you wish to study in Denmark. End on a positive note while expressing that you expect to receive a positive response to your visa request.

Common errors that should be avoided in a cover letter for student visa

  • Writing an application letter that has more than 1200-1500 words is highly looked down upon. Such documents are difficult to read entirely.
  • Repeating your achievements, shortcoming or any other content is a big mistake. It can make the visa officials think that you have unclear thoughts and views.
  • Do not use cliched or copied statements. General statements are boring to read and can show that you have not put in any personal effort.
  • Writing your cover letter for Denmark student visa in a hurry or at the last moment is a big mistake. Stay ahead of time and keep the deadlines in check.
  • Avoid talking about students in general or what everybody else does with their careers. Focus on your personal aims and ambitions only.
  • Writing a plagiarized cover letter is a serious theft for visa officials.  It is not an easy way out and will surely lead to a rejected visa application.
  • Put your serious heart and thought into writing an impeccable cover letter for visa application . An application written without motivation or will has a higher chance of errors.
  • Do not forget the basics of editing, re-editing, and proofreading. These steps ensure that there are minimum to no errors.
  • If you do not know how to explain a certain point, do not make the grave mistake of leaving it. You can contact our Cover Letter Writing Services to help you write your application without leaving out important details.

Denmark is strongly and swiftly competing with other European and Western countries as it has become a favorite among international students. This preference for the country has given rise to a silent competition that decides whether you should be given a chance to enter and stay in the country to accomplish your academic dreams. In these circumstances, a cover letter for Denmark student visa becomes a criteria based on which your profile is evaluated. Your application should have a powerful effect on the reader right from the beginning to the last point. After writing a captivating opening to your application, continue with your personal, professional, and academic details. The second part of your cover letter for visa application has to focus on the choice of course, selection of university, and interest in Denmark. Moving on, the latter parts of your application have to explain your financial situation, reasons to return, and career prospects that will be available to you. Short Stay Visa

Schengen visa Citizens of some non-EU countries are required to hold a valid Schengen visa when travelling to the Schengen area, which is a group of European countries that allows a person, who’s been admitted to the Schengen Area, to travel without any further form of border control within the Schengen Area. Current Schengen States are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Malta, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. A Schengen visa is a short stay visa , i.e. for stays up to 90 days, allowing its holder to circulate in the Schengen Area. A Schengen visa has to be obtained from the Mission of the Schengen State, which will be the main destination (i.e. where the most nights will be spent) during a single trip to the Schengen Area. A single trip is considered when an applicant enters the Schengen Area, stays there for a certain period and eventually leaves the Schengen Area. If an equal amount of nights will be spent in different Schengen States during a single trip to the Schengen Area, then the Schengen visa must be obtained with the Mission of the Schengen State, which will be entered first. The documentation related to the means of travel and accommodation must cover the complete itinerary of the single trip to the Schengen Area ; i.e. travel tickets must be provided, not only for the travel from and to the Schengen Area, but also for the travel between the different Schengen States, when more than 1 Schengen State will be visited during the single trip. Each Schengen visa application must fully comply with the documents required for the respective visa category and can only be submitted up to 3 months before the intended departure date. The acceptance of a Schengen visa application and supporting documents by VFS does not guarantee the issuance of a Schengen visa. The issuance of a Schengen visa, the Schengen visa validity period, the number of entries and amount of travel days are at the sole discretion of the Mission. If a visa application is returned by the Mission requesting missing documents or any other missing/ incorrect information, the customer must accept responsibility for any delay that may occur in the visa application processing time. Holders of valid Schengen visas are still subject to immigration control upon arrival in the Schengen Area and are not necessarily guaranteed entry into any of the Schengen countries, even though they may hold a valid Schengen visa for these countries. Following visa categories are considered Short stay visas:
