1 Assignment 201 Working in the hair industry Task 1a Produce a fact sheet SAMPLE Assignment A fact sheet on six services in the salon SERVICE DETAILS OF SERVICE ROLES OF STAFF CUT AND BLOW The hair is washed and conditioned and then cut to the client s requirements. Hair can be cut into a different style or can be just trimmed. Different cuts include layers, feathering, blunt cutting, cutting with scissors or using a razor to cut the hair. The hair is then blow dried with a hairdryer to create a smooth and professional finish. Cut - NVQ level 2 and up Blow dry - VRQ level 2 and up PERMING First, the hairdresser will wash the hair thoroughly to clean it. Then they will apply perm salt (ammonium thioglycolate solution) to it for a short while. It releases ammonia, which loosens the hair and allows the glycolate to seep through. The hair will be wound around perming rods to create the curls required.

2 An oxidation lotion is applied. This contains hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which reconstitutes the disulphide bonds. This changes the structure of the hair and curls are permanently created. NVQ level 3 and up FOILING Individual hair strands are placed into foil and left to develop. Highlights, lowlights and flashes are then created by foiling techniques. Colourists may use alternative methods of foil placement patterns, techniques (slicing vs. weaving) and foil wrapping. Methods are generally determined by the client s style and desired colour effect. Colourists may choose one type or may combine various patterns, techniques and wrapping methods to achieve results. NVQ level 2 and up HAIR UP Hair is usually set in rollers or pin curls in order to make the hair more manageable. Hair is then put up using pins and grips to create an elegant look for weddings, proms and special occasions.

3 The hair can then be finished with a setting spray/hair spray to ensure the style lasts. VRQ level 2 and up PLAITING There are different types of plaits such as: french plaits, fishtail plaits, cornrows and cane rows braids and Dutch plaits. There are different levels of complexities with plaiting and some plaits can be very intricate. A simple plait can be completed quickly and easily using three strands of hair crossed over each other. Plaiting helps the hair to stay neat and in place and is very popular with children. VRQ level 2 and up MENS CUTS Men's cuts can vary and the hair can be cut using scissors, clippers or razor. Different techniques are scissors over comb, layering and graduating. Mens cuts usually come under the term barbering and hairdressers are trained in this area before being able to cut mens hair as the techniques differ to that of cutting women s hair.
