Students will
1. | Begin the class by asking, âWhat makes a good argument?â Have students share their ideas about making a good argument. |
2. | Conduct the by selecting two student volunteers to read the parts of parent and child in Scenario 1 and two student volunteers to read the parts in Scenario 2. Once the readings are finished, compare the two scenarios and discuss which one provided a better argument. Ask students to identify what made the argument better. |
3. | Introduce the genre of persuasive essays by reading aloud the sample persuasive essay printed from the Internet. Prior to reading, engage students in a brief discussion about whether they think marine mammals should be kept in captivity. Students should respond by stating their opinions on the topic and providing a few reasons to support their opinions. (This step could also be done as a journal writing activity with time for sharing responses with the whole class.) |
4. | Engage students in a discussion in response to the essay. Do students agree or disagree with the author of the essay? Were any students swayed from their previous thoughts on this topic? Students should use information presented in the essay and/or background knowledge to support their opinions. |
5. | Have students access the website independently or with a partner to further introduce them to this genre of writing. This website is an excellent resource that walks students through the process of writing a persuasive essay. Students should take notes on the three main sections of a persuasive essay (i.e., introduction, body, and conclusion). |
6. | Label three sheets of chart paper with the three main sections of a persuasive essay. Once students have finished reviewing the website and taking notes, have each student add a detail from his or her notes to the appropriate sheet of chart paper. |
7. | Review with students the main components of a persuasive essay as presented by students on the chart paper. Hang the sheets in the classroom for future reference during the writing process in Session 2. |
1. | As a whole class, have students brainstorm topics that could be used in writing a persuasive essay about an environmental issue. The topics should be pertinent to the students and their daily lives. Is there something that is happening in the community that students feel strongly about? For example, are there plans to do away with a park to widen a roadway? Is a major corporation dumping chemicals or pollutants in the local river? Are there any other environmental issues that concern students, such as air pollution, global warming, or endangered animals? Should hunting be banned? |
2. | Once students have generated a list of possible topics, have each student select one topic that he or she is interested in pursuing. Students should each generate a list of ideas and questions specific to his or her topic. What information do they already know about the topic? What do they want to know more about? |
3. | Conduct a minilesson on how to formulate a thesis statement. Select a very general topic that all students are familiar with, such as water pollution. Have students generate a list of their ideas about water pollution. Model the development of a thesis statement or question that could guide further research and set the tone for a persuasive essay. For example, âLocal rivers are becoming more polluted and new laws need to be created to prevent pollution from continuing.â |
4. | Have students begin exploring their selected topics to obtain some general background knowledge about the issues. (This general research can be accomplished using Internet resources, print resources, or both.) Once some background knowledge has been gained, students can select a particular issue to focus on and develop thesis statements for their essays. |
5. | Allow students time in the computer lab to access the environmental websites and find supporting evidence for their essays. It is helpful if the websites are already bookmarked on the computers in the lab. [Note: If other topics are selected for this lesson, you will need to prepare a list of websites that students can use for their research.] Students should also be encouraged to use print resources, such as books, magazines, and newspaper articles, to find information to support their thesis statements. |
6. | Make sure that students remember to take notes and print relevant information that they locate to support their thesis. All notes and printed materials will need to be submitted with the final copy of the essay. |
7. | Instruct students to continue researching their topics as homework, if more time is needed. |
1. | Begin this session by conducting a minilesson that focuses on the language and voice used when writing in the persuasive genre. Provide students with opposing examples of strong versus weak statements. (For further instruction on persuasive essay writing, see â .â) |
2. | Before beginning a first draft of their essays, have students use the interactive as a prewriting activity. Using the information gathered during Session 2, students can enter their thesis, the three main reasons to support their thesis, and facts and examples to validate each reason. Remind students to print their maps when they are finished as the tool does not enable students to save their work online. |
3. | Using the completed persuasion maps, students can begin writing a first draft of their essays. They should be reminded to follow the outline provided on the Persuasive Writing website and to refer to the classroom charts as needed. |
4. | When one or two students have completed their first drafts, model a peer conference. Distribute copies of the âConferencing with a Peerâ handout. Engage in a conference with one of the students to show how the conversation might take place using the handout as a guide. If a particular component of the persuasive essay is missing, model how suggestions can be offered. As students complete their first drafts, they can be paired for peer review and conferencing. |
5. | Students should continue with the writing process as they work through editing and revising their first draft. |
6. | Students can then meet with a different peer for additional feedback using the âConferencing with a Peerâ handout, if time allows. |
7. | Briefly review the criteria for evaluation of the essays using the âPersuasive Essay Rubric.â Establish a final due date for the essays to be submitted. |
Students should complete their revisions and prepare a final draft of their persuasive essays to be submitted on the established due date. In addition, students should self-assess their essays using the âPersuasive Essay Rubric.â Finished essays should be submitted, along with the âConferencing with a Peerâ handouts, the self-assessment rubrics, the persuasion map printouts, and any notes or information printed off the Internet that was used to support the writing.
Students analyze rhetorical strategies in online editorials, building knowledge of strategies and awareness of local and national issues. This lesson teaches students connections between subject, writer, and audience and how rhetorical strategies are used in everyday writing.
The Persuasion Map is an interactive graphic organizer that enables students to map out their arguments for a persuasive essay or debate.

The environment is the surrounding of an organism. The environment in which an organism lives is made up of various components like air, water, land, etc. These components are found in fixed proportions to create a harmonious balance in the environment for the organism to live in. Any kind of undesirable and unwanted change in the proportions of these components can be termed as pollution. This issue is increasing with every passing year. It is an issue that creates economic, physical, and social troubles. The environmental problem that is worsening with each day needs to be addressed so that its harmful effects on humans as well as the planet can be discarded.
With the rise of the industries and the migration of people from villages to cities in search of employment, there has been a regular increase in the problem of proper housing and unhygienic living conditions. These reasons have given rise to factors that cause pollution.
Environmental pollution is of five basic types namely, Air, Water, Soil, and Noise pollution.
Air Pollution: Air pollution is a major issue in todayâs world. The smoke pouring out of factory chimneys and automobiles pollute the air that we breathe in. Gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and sulphur dioxide are emitted with this smoke which mixes with air and causes great harm to the human body, flora, and fauna. The dry-farm waste, dry grass, leaves, and coal used as domestic fuels in our villages also produce harmful gases. Acid rain occurs due to an excess of sulphur dioxide in the air.
The Main Sources of Air Pollution are as Follows:
Automobile pollution
Industrial air pollution
Burning garbage
Brick kilns
Indoor air pollution
Decomposed animals and plants
Radioactive elements
Water Pollution: Water pollution is one of the most serious environmental issues. The waste products from the growing industries and sewage water are not treated properly before disposing of the wastewater into the rivers and other water bodies, thus leading to water pollution. Agricultural processes with excess fertilizers and pesticides also pollute the water bodies.
The Main Sources of Water Pollution as Follows:
Marine commerce.
Industrial effluents joining seas and oceans.
Dumping of radioactive substances into seawater.
Sewage is disposed of into the sea by rivers.
Offshore oil rigs.
Recreational activities.
Agricultural pollutants are disposed of into the water bodies.
Soil or Land Pollution: Soil pollution or land pollution results from the deposition of solid waste, accumulation of biodegradable material, deposition of chemicals with poisonous chemical compositions, etc on the open land. Waste materials such as plastics, polythene, and bottles, cause land pollution and render the soil infertile. Moreover, the dumping of dead bodies of animals adds to this issue. Soil pollution causes several diseases in man and animals like Cholera, Dysentery, Typhoid, etc.
The Main Causes of Soil Pollution are as Follows:
Industrial waste
Urban commercial and domestic waste
Chemical fertilizers
Biomedical waste
Noise Pollution: With an increasing population, urbanization, and industrialization, noise pollution is becoming a serious form of pollution affecting human life, health, and comfort in daily life. Horns of vehicles, loudspeakers, music systems, and industrial activities contribute to noise pollution.
The Main Sources of Noise Pollution as Follows:
The machines in the factories and industries produce whistling sounds, crushing noise, and thundering sounds.
Loudspeakers, horns of vehicles.
Blasting of rocks and earth, drilling tube wells, ventilation fans, and heavy earth-moving machinery at construction sites.
The lives of people and other creatures are affected by environmental pollution, both directly and indirectly. For centuries, these living organisms have coexisted with humans on the planet.
1. Effect on the Environment
Smog is formed when carbon and dust particles bind together in the air, causing respiratory problems, haze, and smoke. These are created by the combustion of fossil fuels in industrial and manufacturing facilities and vehicle combustion of carbon fumes.
Furthermore, these factors impact the immune systems of birds, making them carriers of viruses and diseases. It also has an impact on the body's system and organs.
2. Land, Soil, and Food Effects
The degradation of human organic and chemical waste harms the land and soil. It also releases chemicals into the land and water. Pesticides, fertilisers, soil erosion, and crop residues are the main causes of land and soil pollution.
3. Effects on water
Water is easily contaminated by any pollutant, whether it be human waste or factory chemical discharge. We also use this water for crop irrigation and drinking. They, too, get polluted as a result of infection. Furthermore, an animal dies as a result of drinking the same tainted water.
Furthermore, approximately 80% of land-based pollutants such as chemical, industrial, and agricultural waste wind up in water bodies.
Furthermore, because these water basins eventually link to the sea, they contaminate the sea's biodiversity indirectly.
4. Food Reaction
Crops and agricultural produce become poisonous as a result of contaminated soil and water. These crops are laced with chemical components from the start of their lives until harvest when they reach a mass level. Due to this, tainted food has an impact on our health and organs.
5. Climate Change Impact
Climate change is also a source of pollution in the environment. It also has an impact on the ecosystem's physical and biological components.
Ozone depletion, greenhouse gas emissions, and global warming are all examples of environmental pollution. Because these water basins eventually link to the sea, they contaminate the sea's biodiversity indirectly. Furthermore, their consequences may be fatal for future generations. The unpredictably cold and hot climate impacts the earthâs natural system.
Furthermore, earthquakes, starvation, smog, carbon particles, shallow rain or snow, thunderstorms, volcanic eruptions, and avalanches are all caused by climate change, caused entirely by environmental pollution.
To minimise this issue, some preventive measures need to be taken.
Principle of 3Râs: To save the environment, use the principle of 3 Râs; Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.
Reuse products again and again. Instead of throwing away things after one use, find a way to use them again. Reduce the generation of waste products.
Recycle: Paper, plastics, glass, and electronic items can be processed into new products while using fewer natural resources and lesser energy.
To prevent and control air pollution, better-designed equipment, and smokeless fuels should be used in homes and industries. More and more trees should be planted to balance the ecosystem and control greenhouse effects.
Noise pollution can be minimised by better design and proper maintenance of vehicles. Industrial noise can be reduced by soundproofing equipment like generators, etc.
To control soil pollution, we must stop the usage of plastic. Sewage should be treated properly before using it as fertilizers and as landfills. Encourage organic farming as this process involves the use of biological materials and avoiding synthetic substances to maintain soil fertility and ecological balance.
Several measures can be adopted to control water pollution. Some of them are water consumption and usage that can be minimized by altering the techniques involved. Water should be reused with treatment.
The melting icebergs in Antarctica resulted in rising sea levels due to the world's environmental pollution, which had become a serious problem due to global warming, which had become a significant concern. Rising carbon pollution poses a risk for causing natural disasters such as earthquakes, cyclones, and other natural disasters.
The Hiroshima-Nagasaki and Chernobyl disasters in Russia have irreversibly harmed humanity. Different countries around the world are responding to these calamities in the most effective way possible.
Different countries around the world are responding to these calamities in the most effective way possible. More public awareness campaigns are being established to educate people about the hazards of pollution and the importance of protecting our environment. Greener lifestyles are becoming more popular; for example, energy-efficient lighting, new climate-friendly autos, and the usage of wind and solar power are just a few examples.
Governments emphasise the need to plant more trees, minimise the use of plastics, improve natural waste recovery, and reduce pesticide use. This ecological way of living has helped humanity save other creatures from extinction while making the Earth a greener and safer ecology.
It is the responsibility of every individual to save our planet from these environmental contamination agents. If preventive measures are not taken then our future generation will have to face major repercussions. The government is also taking steps to create public awareness. Every individual should be involved in helping to reduce and control pollution.

Environmental pollution refers to the introduction of harmful pollutants into the environment. The major types of environmental pollution are air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, thermal pollution, soil pollution and light pollution. Deforestation and hazardous gaseous emissions also leads to environmental pollution. During the last 10 years, the world has witnessed severe rise in environmental pollution. We all live on planet earth, which is the only planet known to have an environment, where air and water are two basic things that sustain life. Without air and water the earth would be like the other planets â no man, no animals, no plants. The biosphere in which living beings have their sustenance has oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, argon and water vapor. All these are well balanced to ensure and help a healthy growth of life in the animal world. This balance does not only help the life-cycles of animals and plants, but it also creates the perennial sources of minerals and energies without which the human civilization of today could not be built. It is for this balance that the human life and other forms of existence have flourished on earth for so many thousands of years. But man, as the most intelligent animal, never stopped being inquisitive, nor was he content with the bounties of nature. His quest for knowledge and search for security succeeded in exploring newer and wider avenues of mysteries that remained baffling so long. Man's excursions into the darkest regions of mysteries laid foundations for the stupendous civilization, for the conquests of men had ensured their domination in their world and gave them a key to control all the forces in nature. With the dawn of the age of science and technology, there has been huge growth and development of human potentials. And, it is here that man first began losing control and became prisoner of his own creations. Sources and Causes The sources and causes of environmental pollution includes the following: ⢠Industrial activities: The industries all over the world that brought prosperity and affluence, made inroads in the biosphere and disturbed the ecological

Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that cause adverse change. Pollution can take the form of any substance (solid, liquid, or gas) or energy (such as radioactivity, heat, sound, or light). Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants. Although environmental pollution can be caused by natural events, the word pollution generally implies that the contaminants have an anthropogenic source â that is, a source created by human activities. Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint source pollution. In 2015, pollution killed nine million people worldwide (one in six deaths). This remained unchanged in 2019, with little real progress against pollution being identifiable. Air pollution accounted for ž of these earlier deaths.Major forms of pollution include air pollution, light pollution, litter, noise pollution, plastic pollution, soil contamination, radioactive contamination, thermal pollution, visual pollution, and water pollution.

Introduction:-Now a days, environmental pollution is a major cause for concern, not only for us, but also for the whole mankind. In the last century, the rise of this menace assumed so gigantic that it has cast its melancholic shadow on nature itself. The diminishing ozone ionosphere leading to global warming and the unpredictable seasonal variations are some of the adverse effects of worldwide environmental pollution that are threatening to the existence of human beings on this planet.
International Journal of Natural Disasters & Health Security (IJNHS) SciDoc Publishers
Pollution induces harmful effects on environment and health security. Main deep causes will be analyzed including natural disasters like volcanoes eruption, climate change as well as and men-caused disasters which are nuclear explosions and dioxin sprays.

The importance of the environmental pollution lies in its great impact on human life and the surrounding environment. In addition to its disastrous results that extend for many years, it contributes to crystallize the life of man, animal, and plant. The research discusses the concept of environmental pollution, and all the undesirable changes that occur in the environment. It sheds light on the causes of pollution, especially radiation and chemical types result from cars, fumes, gases, smoke and industrial wastes, which included liquid, solid wastes and others. It emphasizes air pollution, its causes, sources, and effects on humans, animals, plants, and the weather. It has a major role in making a foremost change in temperatures degree. Conceivably, the waste is extremely dangerous, and the smoke, fumes, toxins and unpleasant odors of factories and cars cause a fuel combustion with all its preventive measures and procedures. There is no doubt that the expansion of transportation means will negatively affect the percentage of environmental pollution. The research debates the most important factors and causes of water pollution due to throwing liquid and solid wastes into rivers and lakes. The causes of soil and plant pollution can be linked to the use of large quantities of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, which affect the quality of agricultural crops and reduces their fertility. They contribute to the loss of their beneficial organic materials, which harmfully disturbs the life of both humans and animals.
IJERA Journal
Environment Pollution is one of the greatest problems today which is increasing with every passing year and causing crucial and severe damage to the earth. It has become a real problem since the beginning of the industrial revolution. It is the contamination of physical and biological components of the Earth / atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are harmed. Pollution of the environment consists of five main types of pollution, namely air, water, soil, noise and light. Development activities such as construction, transport and manufacturing not only deplete natural resources, but also produce large quantities of waste which leads to air pollution, water, soil and the oceans; global warming and acid rain. This paper provides the insight view about the affects of environment pollution in the perspective of air pollution, water and land/ soil waste pollution on human and also provide the ways to save the environment with all these pollution.
Earth is the only known planet which supports life. The environment of earth has made the existence, growth and development of all living beings possible. The word "environment" means surroundings. The environment is polluted in various ways. The dictionary explains pollutions as "The presence dictionary explains pollutions as "The presence in or introduction into the environment of substance which has harmful or poisonous effect." Pollution is the effect of undesirable changes in our surroundings that have harmful effects on plants, animals and human beings. This occurs when only short-term economic gains are made at the cost of the long-term ecological benefits for humanity. No natural phenomenon has led to greater ecological changes than have been made by mankind. During the last few decades we have contaminated our air, water and land on which life itself depends with a variety of waste products. Pollutants: include solid, liquid or gaseous substances present in greater than natural abundance produced due to human activity, which have a detrimental effect on our environment. The nature and concentration of a pollutant determines the severity of detrimental effects on human health. An average human requires about 12 kg of air each day, which is nearly 12 to15 times greater than the amount of food we eat. Thus even a small concentration of pollutants in the air becomes more significant in comparison to the similar levels present in food. Pollutants that enter water have the ability to spread to distant places especially in the marine ecosystem.

The environment is everything that surrounds us. The environment is subject to constant changes that can be caused by natural factors such as soil erosion, earthquakes, floods, fires, and anthropogenic factors such as urbanization, industry, traffic, population growth, the accumulation of waste, and others. Due to the ubiquitous interaction of man in the environment, most often without respecting the natural rhythm in nature, man changes the environment with a harmful effect on biological and landscape diversity and often with negative consequences for human health and quality of life. By neglecting the environment in favor of economic growth and development, man has changed the environment more than any other biological species in a relatively short time with such irresponsible behavior. The consequences of such actions are unsustainable and call into question the future of that same environment. Therefore, protecting and preserving the environment in all spheres of life and work on the basis of sustainability becomes the biggest challenge for modern man and society as a whole.

Developmental activities such as construction, transportation and manufacturing not only deplete the natural resources but also produce large amount of wastes that leads to pollution of air, water, soil, and oceans, global warming and acid rains. Untreated or improperly treated waste is a major cause of pollution of rivers and environmental degradation causing ill health and loss of crop productivity. In this research paper a study is undertaken about the major causes of pollution, their effects on our environment and the various measures that can be taken to control such pollutions

500+ words essay on should plastic be banned.
Plastic bags are a major cause of environmental pollutio n. Plastic as a substance is non-biodegradable and thus plastic bags remain in the environment for hundreds of years polluting it immensely. It has become very essential to ban plastic bags before they ruin our planet completely. Many countries around the globe have either put a ban on the plastic bag or Levi tax on it. However, the problem hasnât been solved completely because the implementation of these measures hasnât been as successful.
Here are some of the problems caused by plastic bags:
Plastic bags are non-biodegradable. Thus, disposing of the plastics is the biggest challenge. T
They are destroying nature due to their harmful effect. Plastic bags have become the main cause of land pollution today. The plastic bags entering into the water bodies are a major cause of water pollution . Hence we can conclude that these are deteriorating our environment in every possible way.
Animals and marine creatures unknowingly consume plastic particles along with their food. Research shows that waste plastic bags have been a major reason for untimely animal deaths.
The production of plastic bags releases toxic chemicals. These are the main cause of serious illness. The polluted environment is a major reason for various diseases which are spreading easily in human beings.
Waste plastic bags are the main reason for trapping the drains and sewers, especially during rains. This can result in a flood-like situation and disrupt the normal life of people.
Get the huge list of more than 500 Essay Topics and Ideas
There are numerous reasons why the government of various countries has come up with strict measures to limit the use of plastic bags. Some of these include:
Although the Indian government has imposed a ban on the usage of plastic bags in many states. But people are still carrying these bags. Shopkeepers stop providing plastic bags for few days only in the beginning.
It is time when we all must contribute our bit to make this ban a success. Thus we the educated lot of society must take it as our responsibility to stop using plastic bags. In this way, we can support the government in this campaign.
Some contributions that can be made by people are as follows:
In order to be successful in this mission, we must keep reminding ourselves about the harmful effects of the plastic bags on our nature and keep a tab on their use. Gradually, we will become habitual to doing without these bags.
There are many eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags like reusable jute or cloth bag.
We must reuse the plastic bags we already have at home as many times as we can before throwing them away.
While the government is spreading awareness about the harmful effects of plastic bags, we can also spread awareness through word of mouth.
Although plastic is becoming a big threat for all of us, still this problem has often been overlooked and underestimated. This is because people do not look at the long term effect of these small, easy to carry bags they use in their everyday life. Besides all of these people keep using bags due to their convenience. But now everyone has to completely stop using the plastic bag to save our environment and earth.

Environmental pollution in the recent days has been a major contributor to the increment of fatal health effects in the society. Environmental pollutants are toxins from air, food and water that have led to the development of severe diseases like asthma, pneumonia, and cancer. Environmental pollution is majorly contributed by humans who are leading bad lifestyles through carrying out of dangerous activities on the environment. Therefore, the unethical behavior of human beings contributes to pollution of the environment and eventually increment of cancer-related defects. Over time, environmental pollution has been connected to various types of cancer. The common pollutions that are associated with cancer include; food pollution as a result of the carcinogenic contaminants present in food additives, outdoor and indoor air pollutions as a result of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and smoke, Cosmetics, Drugs, and the increment of carcinogenic metals on the environment [1] .
The continuous release of dangerous fumes from industries to the environment increases the PAHs thereby increasing the risk of people developing cancer, more particularly lung cancer. These PAHs exist in the form of fine particles of carbon that enters into the human bodies mainly through the natural process of breathing . In addition, volatile organic elements and excessive use of pesticides on the environment increase the chances of people developing the brain, germ cell and wilmâs tumors in the body [2] . The exposure of people to these PAHs over a long period in various cities has dramatically increased cancer deaths.
In addition, the release of harmful fumes into the atmosphere has destroyed the ozone layer that handles absorbing dangerous ultraviolet rays from the sun. People are now exposed to these dangerous rays on the environment leading to the development of skin cancer. Therefore, cancer is a disease that has been contributed as a result of unethical activities by people on the environment. People should rather maintain high ethical standards in their day-to-day endeavors in case cancer issues will be minimized.
Moreover, the exposure of people to the chlorinated water meant for drinking over a long period can be associated with the development of cancer complications . The nitrate compounds that are contained in this water are transformed into mutagenic N-nitroso compounds that handle the development of bladder, and colorectal cancer. However, this is a very complicated issue as people make use of chlorinated water as a form of preventing themselves from harmful disease-causing organisms. Therefore, the development of these complications are not as a result of the unethical behavior of people but rather an emerging issue within their lifestyle [3] .
However as far as it’s argued that cancer is a health challenge contributed by the unethical human activities on the environment, there are other ethical endeavors that can also contribute to the health defect. For instance, pollution cannot be fully controlled with the current population. Nevertheless, people should change their behaviors and lifestyle as a remedy towards controlling environmental pollution that acts as one of the causative elements of cancer in the society [4] . In consideration of the current environmental pollution issue and cancer, it is clear that it is the society’s choices have led to the dramatic increment of cancer cases. If every individual lives an ethical life with minimized pollution to the environment, then there will be fewer contributors of cancer in the society.

Three states challenged the administrationâs âgood neighborâ plan, meant to protect downwind states from harmful emissions.
By Adam Liptak
Reporting from Washington
The Supreme Court temporarily put on hold on Thursday an Environmental Protection Agency plan to curtail air pollution that drifts across state lines, dealing another blow to the Biden administrationâs efforts to protect the environment.
The ruling followed recent decisions chipping away at the agencyâs authority to address climate change and water pollution .
Under the proposal, known as the âgood neighborâ plan, factories and power plants in Western and Midwestern states must cut ozone pollution that drifts into Eastern ones. The emissions cause smog and are linked to asthma, lung disease and premature death.
The ruling was provisional, but even the temporary loss for the administration will suspend the plan for many months and maybe longer.
The vote was 5 to 4. Writing for the majority, Justice Neil M. Gorsuch said the courtâs ruling was modest, pausing the administrationâs plan in light of developments in lower courts. He said the Supreme Courtâs stay would remain in place while a federal appeals court in Washington considered the matter and, after that, until the Supreme Court acts on any appeal.
Justice Amy Coney Barrett, joined by the courtâs three liberal members, issued a spirited dissent predicting that the majority had created a âyearslong exercise in futility.â
