தயாரிப்பு - ஏஆர் முருகதாஸ் புரொடக்ஷன்ஸ், காட் பிளஸ் என்டர்டெயின்மென்ட், பர்ப்புள் புல் என்டர்டெயின்மென்ட் இயக்கம் - என்எஸ் பொன்குமார் இசை - ஷான் ரோல்டன் நடிப்பு - கவுதம் கார்த்திக், ரேவதி, புகழ் வெளியான தேதி - 7 ஏப்ரல் 2023 நேரம் - 2 மணி நேரம் 24 நிமிடம் ரேட்டிங் - 2.75/3 இந்திய சுதந்திரப் போராட்டத்தை மையப்படுத்தி, அந்தக் காலங்களில்தான் கொஞ்சம் படங்கள் வந்தன. அவை உண்மைச் சம்பவங்களைத் தழுவிய படங்களாக அதிகம் இருந்தன. ஆனால், கற்பனையான ஒரு கதையை வைத்து நெகிழ வைக்கும் சம்பவங்களுடன் இந்தப் படத்தைக் கொடுக்க முயற்சித்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர் பொன்குமார். தமிழகத்தில், திருநெல்வேலிக்கு அருகில், மலைகளுக்கு நடுவில் உள்ள செங்காடு என்ற கிராமம். அந்த கிராமத்தில் வெள்ளையர்களிடம் அடிமைப்பட்டுக் கிடக்கும் ஊர்மக்கள். அவர்கள் தினமும் 16 மணி நேரம் பருத்தியிலிருந்து, நூல் எடுக்கும் தொழிலைச் செய்பவர்கள். அந்த கிராமத்தை தங்களது கட்டுப்பாட்டில் வைத்திருக்கும் கொடூர குணம் கொண்ட ஆங்கிலேயே அதிகாரி, இளம் பெண்கள் மீது ஆசைப்படும் அவரது மகன், ஆங்கிலேயனுக்கு விசுவாசமாக இருக்கும் ஜமீன்தார் என படத்திற்கான கதைக்களத்தை, கதாபாத்திரங்களை அந்தக் காலத்திற்கே செல்லும்படியாக உருவாக்கியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர்.

இந்தியாவிற்கு சுதந்திரம் கொடுக்கும் சமயத்தில் செங்காடு கிராமத்தில் உருவாகும் பருத்தி நூலுக்கு அடுத்த 30 வருடங்களுக்கு லாபத்தில் பங்கு தர வேண்டும் என சென்னை மாகாண ஆங்கிலேயே அதிகாரி ஆலோசனை சொல்லி அதை செயல்படுத்த நினைக்கிறார். அது சம்பந்தமாகப் பேச செங்காடு கிராம ஆங்கிலேயே அதிகாரியான ராபர்ட்டை (ரிச்சர்ட் அஷ்டன்) அழைக்க கடிதம் அனுப்புகிறார்கள். கடிதம் கொண்டு செல்பவர்கள் புலி தாக்கி இறந்து போகிறார்கள். ராபர்ட்டின் மகனான ஜஸ்டின் (ஜேசன் ஷா) அந்த கிராமத்தில் எந்தப் பெண் வயதுக்கு வந்தாலும் அவர்களை தனது படுக்கைக்கு அழைத்துச் செல்லும் கொடியவன். அவன் கண்ணில் தனது மகள் தீபாலி (ரேவதி) பட்டுவிடக் கூடாது என ஜமீன்தார் (மதுசூதன ராவ்) சிறு வயதிலேயே இறந்துவிட்டதாகப் பொய் சொல்கிறார். ஆனால், ஒரு சூழலில் ஜஸ்டின் கண்ணில் தீபாலி பட்டுவிட, அவளை தன்னிடம் அனுப்பி வைக்குமாறு கட்டளையிடுகிறான். அதனால், தனது மகளை உயிரோடு பூமியில் புதைத்து பூமி தானம் செய்கிறார் ஜமீன். தீபாலி மீது சிறு வயதிலிருந்தே ஆசைப்படும் பரமன் (கவுதம் கார்த்திக்) அவளைக் காப்பாற்றி அழைத்துச் செல்கிறான். இதன்பின் என்ன நடக்கிறது என்பதுதான் மீதிக் கதை. இந்தியா சுதந்திரம் அடைந்த செய்தி மலைகளுக்கு நடுவில் எங்கோ ஒரு மூலையில் உள்ள செங்காடு கிராம மக்களுக்கு தெரிந்துவிடக் கூடாது என்ற சஸ்பென்ஸ்தான் இந்தப் படத்தில் முக்கியமானது. அதைச் சுற்றி திரைக்கதை அமைக்கப்பட்டிருந்தால் படம் இன்னும் விறுவிறுப்பாக நகர்ந்திருக்க வாய்ப்புள்ளது. அதைத் தவிர்த்து மற்ற விஷயங்களுக்கும் அதிக முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுத்துள்ளதால் ஊர் மக்களுக்கு அது பற்றித் தெரிந்தால் என்ன தெரியாவிட்டால் என்ன என்ற உணர்வே ஏற்படுகிறது. காட்சியமைப்புகளில், கதாபாத்திரங்களில் சரியான கவனம் செலுத்திய இயக்குனர் திரைக்கதையில் இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் மாற்றி யோசித்திருந்தால் இப்படம் ஒரு முக்கியமான படமாக அமைந்திருக்கும். தன் அம்மாவை ஆங்கிலேயனிடம் காட்டிக் கொடுத்த ஊர் மக்கள் மீது எப்போதும் வெறுப்புடனேயே இருப்பவர் கவுதம். ஜஸ்டின் வீட்டில் வேலை பார்ப்பவர். சிறு வயதிலிருந்தே ஜமீன் மகள் ரேவதியைக் காதலிப்பவர். ஆனால், ரேவதிக்கு பக்கத்து ஊர் ஜமீன் வாரிசை திருமணம் பேசப் போகிறார்கள் என்று தெரிந்ததும் தனது காதலை மறைத்துக் கொள்கிறார். இருந்தாலும் தனது காதலி நன்றாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என அவரைக் காப்பாற்றுகிறார். காதலிக்காத காதலிக்காக அவர் செய்யும் ஒரு விஷயம்தான் படத்தின் திருப்புமுனை. ஜமீன் மகள் தீபாலியாக புதுமுகம் ரேவதி. மேக்கப்பில்லாமல் அழகாகவே இருக்கிறார். படத்தில் இவர் மட்டும்தான் காட்சிக்குக் காட்சி புது ஆடையில் வருகிறார். மற்றவர்களுக்கெல்லாம் ஒரே ஆடைதான். முதல் படம் என்று சொல்ல முடியாதபடி கதாபாத்திரத்தை உணர்ந்து நடித்திருக்கிறார். கவுதம் கார்த்திக்கின் நண்பராக புகழ். குணச்சித்திரக் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடித்திருக்கிறார். கிளைமாக்ஸ் காட்சிகளில் கண்கலங்க வைக்கிறார். ஆங்கிலேயே அதிகாரி ராபர்ட் ஆக ரிச்சர்ட் அஷ்டன், அவரது மகன் ஜஸ்டின் ஆக ஜேசன் ஷா கதாபாத்திரங்களை தமிழ் பேசுபவர்களாகவே காட்டியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குனர். இருவரும் வில்லத்தனத்தில் மிரட்டுகிறார்கள். ஆங்கிலேயர்களுக்கு விசுவாசமாக இருக்கும் ஜமீன்தாராக மதுசூதன ராவ், விசுவாசத்தை மீறி அடிமையாகவே மாறிவிட்டார். மற்ற கதாபாத்திரங்களில் அந்த பாட்டி மனதில் இடம் பிடிக்கிறார். ஷான் ரோல்டன் பின்னணி இசை குறிப்பிடும்படி இருக்கிறது, பாடல்களில் இன்னும் கவனம் செலுத்தி ஹிட் ஆக்கியிருக்கலாம். கலை இயக்குனர் மறைந்த சந்தானத்திற்குத்தான் படத்தில் அதிக வேலை. அதை கவனமாகவே செய்திருக்கிறார். இயக்குனர் செல்வகுமார் அந்த காலகட்டத்தை கண்முன் காட்டியிருக்கிறார். கொஞ்சம் குடிசை வீடுகள், ராபர்ட் வீடு, ஜஸ்டின் வீடு என குறுகிய வட்டத்திற்குள்ளேயே மொத்த படமும் நகர்கிறது. மக்களை ராபர்ட், ஜஸ்டின் கொடுமைப்படுத்தும் காட்சிகள் கோரமாக இருக்கிறது. சுதந்திரம் கிடைப்பது ஊர் மக்களுக்கு எப்படியும் தெரிந்துவிடும் என்ற கிளைமாக்சை ஆரம்பத்திலேயே யூகித்துவிடலாம். ஆனால், அது எப்படி தெரிய வரப் போகிறது என்ற பதைபதைப்பை திரைக்கதையில் சேர்க்கத் தவறிவிட்டார்கள். இருப்பினும் 1947 காலகட்டத்தை ஓரளவிற்குக் கண்முன் கொண்டு வந்து நிறுத்தியுள்ளார்கள். அந்த உழைப்பிற்காகப் பாராட்டலாம். ஆகஸ்ட் 16, 1947 - வெள்ளையனே வெளியேறு

‘ஆகஸ்ட் 16 1947’ Review: பார்வையாளர்களை ஈர்த்ததா இந்த பீரியட் டிராமா?

சுதந்திரத்துக்கு முந்தைய இந்தியாவின் செங்காடு கிராமத்தை ஆட்சி செய்து வரும் ஆங்கிலேயரான ராபர்ட் கிளைவ் (ரிச்சர் ஆஸ்டன்) அங்கிருக்கும் மக்களை கொடூரமாக சித்ரவதை செய்து வேலை வாங்குகிறார். அவரது மகன் ஜஸ்டின் (ஜேசன் ஷா) அக்கிராமத்தில் பருவமடைந்த பெண்களை தூக்கிச் சென்று பாலியல் வன்கொடுமை செய்வதை வாடிக்கையாகக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார். அவருக்கு பயந்து அவ்வூர் ஜமீன்தார் தனது மகள் இறந்துவிட்டதாக பொய் சொல்லி வீட்டில் வைத்து வளர்க்க, ஒருநாள் உண்மை வெளிச்சமாகிறது. இதைக் கண்ட ஜஸ்டின், ஜமீன்தார் மகளை அடைய நினைக்க, தனது காதலியான அந்தப் பெண்ணை பாதுகாக்க போராடுகிறார் பரமன் (கௌதம் கார்த்திக்). இறுதியில் பரமன் அந்தப் பெண்ணை காப்பாற்றினாரா? இல்லையா? கிராம மக்களுக்கு சுதந்திரம் கிடைத்த செய்தியை எதற்காக, யார் மறைத்தார்கள்? இதுதான் படத்தின் திரைக்கதை.

வெயில் மனிதர்களின் பழுப்பேறிய முகங்களையும், சுடுமண் தரையின் சூட்டோடு கொதிக்கும் நீரில் தூக்கி வீசப்படும் அவலத்தையும், எதிர்த்து எழும் குரல்கள் இரக்கமற்று கழுவேற்றப்படும் நிகழ்வுகளின் வழியே பிரிட்டிஷ் ஆதிக்கத்தில் இந்தியாவின் நிலையை கற்பனைக் கலந்து காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் என்.எஸ்.பொன்குமார். யதார்த்தத்திற்கு நெருக்கமான மறைந்த கலை இயக்குநர் டி.சந்தானத்தின் கலை அமைப்பு உண்மையான கிராமத்தை கண்முன் நிறுத்துகிறது. சிகை அலங்காரத்தின் மிகையற்ற தன்மை கிராமத்து மக்களின் சாயலை வரித்துக்கொள்வதால், செங்காடு மக்களுடன் திரையில் உறவாடும் உணர்வு எழுவது ஆகச் சிறப்பு. குறிப்பாக டிஎஸ்ஆர் தர்மராஜ் காதில் பூட்டு போன்ற காதணி ஒன்றை அணிந்திருக்கும் காட்சி பீரியாடிக் படத்திற்கான அத்தாட்சி.

அழுத்தமான காட்சிகளுடன் தொடங்கும் படத்தில் நடுவில் வரும் காதலும் அதற்கான பாடல்களும் சோர்வு. நாயகனுக்கான பின்கதை சம்பிரதாயத்துடன் அணுகப்பட்டிருப்பது அதற்கான உணர்வை நீர்த்துப்போகச் செய்வதால் அந்த ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக் காட்சிகளின் தாக்கம் உணர்வுகளில் பிரதிபலிக்கவில்லை. அதேபோல, இறுதிக்காட்சியின் நீளம் அக்கிராமத்தின் பரப்பளவை விட நீண்டிருப்பதாலும், இதுதான் நடக்கப்போகிறது என்பதை காலம் காலமாக தமிழ் சினிமா பார்த்தவர்களால் எளிதாக கணிக்க முடிவதாலும் முடிவு அவ்வளவு நேர்த்தியாக கையாளப்படவில்லையோ எனத் தோன்றுகிறது.

‘கொட்டுங்கடா’ பாடலில் தெறிக்கும் புழுதியால் ஏசி திரையரங்கிலும் கண்களில் தூசு தட்டுவது ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் செல்வகுமாரின் லென்ஸ் செய்யும் மாயம். அழகியலை கிராம மக்கள் ஒன்றாக சேர்ந்து பேசும் இரவுக் காட்சியில் சுற்றியிருக்கும் தீப்பந்தத்தின் ஒளியை உள்வாங்கி ப்ரேமை செதுக்கியிருக்கும் விதம் ஒளிப்பதிவில் இதம் சேர்க்கிறது. ஷான் ரோல்டன் இசையில் பாடல்கள் மனதில் தேங்கவில்லை என்றாலும், பின்னணி இசை கவனிக்க வைக்கிறது. இறுதியில் வரும் ‘வந்தே மாதரம்’ ஈர்ப்பு.

இயல்பு கலந்து நேர்த்தியான நடிப்பும் அதற்கான கௌதம் கார்த்தியின் உழைப்பும் திரையில் கவனம் பெறுகிறது. கிராமத்து மக்களில் ஒருவராகவும், அதற்கான உடல்மொழியும், சிகை அலங்காரமும், இறுதிக்காட்சியில் மக்கள் முன் அவர் பேசும் வசனமும், காதலிக்காக எந்த எல்லைக்கும் செல்லும் கதாபாத்திரத்தில் ‘பக்காவாக’ பொருந்துகிறார். இதுவரை பார்த்திடாத அழுத்தமான நடிப்பில் புகழ் அதகளம் செய்கிறார். பிரிட்டிஷ் அதிகாரி ராபர்ட் க்ளைவிடம் நடுங்கிக் கொண்டே பேசும் காட்சியிலும், கௌதம் கார்த்தியிடம் ஓடி வந்து ஒரு விஷயத்தை பகிரும் காட்சியிலும் தேர்ந்த நடிகராக மிளிர்கிறார்.

அப்பாவி முகத்துடன் ஜமீன்தார் வீட்டுப்பெண்ணாக ரேவதியின் நடிப்பு கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு பொருந்துகிறது. அதேசமயம் நடிப்பின் தேவையை சில காட்சிகள் அப்பட்டமாக்கிவிடுகின்றன. பிரிட்டிஷ்காரராக நடித்துள்ள ரிச்சர்ட் ஆஸ்டன் அட்டகாசமான நடிப்பில் கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு தேவையான வெறுப்பை வாரிக்குவிக்கிறார். மகனாக வரும் ஜேசன் ஷா பொம்மையை போல இருந்தாலும் குறை சொல்ல முடியாத நடிப்பு. ஊர் மக்களின் நடிப்பில் அவ்வளவு யதார்த்தம்.

மொத்தத்தில், சுதந்திரம் கிடைத்தது குறித்து அறியாத கிராமம் என்ற சுவாரஸ்யமான ஒன்லைனை அழுத்தமாக எழுதிய காட்சிகள் நிறைவு. தேவைக்கு அதிகமாக இழுத்த காதல், க்ளைமாக்ஸ் உள்ளிட்ட இன்னும் சில காட்சிகள் ஏமாற்றம்.

ஏ. ஆர் முருகதாஸிடம் 8 வருடங்கள் உதவி இயக்குனராக பணிபுரிந்த என். எஸ் பொன்குமார் இயக்கியுள்ள படம், ஆகஸ்டு 16 1947.இந்தியாவிற்கு சுதந்திரம் கிடைத்த 1947ஆம் ஆண்டில், செங்காடு எனும் கிராமத்தில் வாழும் மக்களை அடிமைபோல் வேலை வாங்கும் ராபர்ட் க்ளைவ் என்பவருக்கும், அவ்வூர் மக்களுக்கும் இடையே நடக்கும் போராட்டம் தான் இப்படம். 'பத்து தல' படத்தில் சிறப்பான கதாப்பாத்திரத்தில் நடித்து நல்ல நடிகர் என பெயர் பெற்ற கௌதம் கார்த்திக், அந்த பெயரை இந்த படத்திலும் தக்க வைத்துள்ளாரா? வாங்க பார்க்கலாம். 

கதையின் கரு:

வெளியுலக தொடர்பே இல்லாத கிராமம்.. அங்கு வாழும் மக்களிடம் சுதந்திரம் கிடைத்த செய்தியை மறைக்க நினைக்கும் கொடூர வில்லன்…இறுதியில் என்ன ஆனது? இதுதான் ஆகஸ்டு 16 1947 படத்தின் கதை. 

1947ஆம் ஆண்டு, இந்தியாவிற்கு சுதந்திரம் கிடைப்பதற்கு ஒரு வாரம் முன்பிருந்து கதை ஆரம்பிக்கிறது. வெளியுலக தொடர்பே இல்லாத  'செங்காடு' எனும் கிராமம், பருத்தி நூல் வளம் நிறைந்த இடம்.  அவ்வூர் மக்களுக்கு, பருத்தி நெய்து பிழைப்பதுதான் வாழ்வாதாரம். அப்படி வேலை செய்யும் மக்களை, சோ‍று தண்ணீர் கொடுக்காமல், சிறுநீர் கூட கழிக்க விடாமல், 16 மணி நேரம் வேலை வாங்கும் அரக்கன், ராபர்ட் க்ளைவ் . இவரை எதிர்போருக்கு மரணம், வேலை செய்யாதோருக்கு சவுக்கடி-சுடுநீர் அபிஷேகம்.

காலத்தை கடக்க வைக்கும் திரைக்கதை:

1947ஆம் ஆண்டில் நடப்பதைப் போன்று அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள படத்தின் காட்சிகள், இந்தியா சுதந்திரம் வாங்கிய காலத்திற்கே நம்மை அழைத்துச் சென்று விடுகிறது."அடுத்து என்ன நடக்கும்?" என கேட்க வைக்கிறது படத்தின் முதல் பாதி, இரண்டாம் பாதியோ "அடுத்து இதுதான் நடக்கும்.." என யூகிக்க வைக்கிறது. 

இடைவேளைக்கு அடுத்து வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள சில தேவையற்ற இழுவையான காட்சிகள்தான் அதற்கு காரணம். தொய்வான காட்சிகள் சில இடங்களில் இருப்பினும், படத்தின் மீதான ரசிகர்களின் கவனத்தை ஒரு துளி கூட சிதற விடாமல் காப்பாற்றியிருக்கிறார், இயக்குநர் என்.எஸ்.பொன்குமார். தனது முதல் படத்திலேயே 'நச்'சென நங்கூரம் போட்டுள்ள இவர், நிச்சயமாக கவனிக்கத்தக்க இயக்குநர்களின் பட்டியலில் சீக்கிரம் இடம் பெறுவார் என்பதில் சந்தேகமில்லை. மொத்தத்தில், ரசிகர்களை எந்த இடத்திலும் 'உச்' கொட்ட வைக்காமல் இறுதியில் நல்ல வரலாற்று பின்னணி கொண்ட கதை என பெயர் பெறுகிறது, ஆகஸ்டு 16 1947.

August 16, 1947 Movie Review: An exciting story butchered by over-the-top staging

Creating entertainment out of the freedom struggle is tricky business. While films on this topic are usually biopics or tragedies, there are rare films that have managed to deliver all-round entertainment like RRR , and Madarasapattinam . At its core, August 16, 1947, falls in the latter category when it comes to ambitions. It is the story of a fictional village shielded away from news of India’s independence by its geography… and a wicked British General. This premise could have resulted in exciting ideas and an unforgettable film, but debutant NS Ponkumar won’t settle for a simple, sober film.

Cast: Gautham Karthik, Revathy, Pugazh, Richard Ashton, Jason Shah Director: NS Ponkumar Rating:2/5 He’s eager to make a dashing debut, and this means that the drama is amped up to its maximum limit, every chance he gts. Even after introducing Justin, one of the British antagonists, as a sexual predator, Ponkumar goes on to show him groping a minor, and worse, using an idol as a sex toy. Similarly, we get that Justin's father Robert is a blood-thirsty man within a few minutes into the film, but the director still feeds us with multiple, long sequences of him whipping, stomping, and killing people. The performances too are as exaggerated as the screenplay. Half an hour into the film, we are pretty much waiting to see the General to turn red in rage and for the villagers to run for their lives. It’s rather ironic that a village as reliant on physical communication should seem as clueless when a mute person conveys something elementary to them during a crucial sequence. The biggest villain of August 16, 1947 isn't Justin or Robert; it is the film’s trailer that gave out all the little surprises and projected the film almost as a rather light-hearted, enjoyable take on freedom struggle. These stories, even if predictable, can be made compelling with effective writing that takes us into the world of the protagonist and places us in their shoes. But here, we hardly get familiar with the principal character Paraman (Gautham Karthik). For one, we don't even get a clear picture of his equation with the villagers. He dances with them but doesn't bat an eye when the men are killed, or the girls are raped. If he is the only 'veeran' of the village, who leads everyone to salvation, shouldn't we understand his psyche, dilemma, and moral conflict a little deeper? What we get are passing dialogues that leave very little impact.  The people of the village wear something similar to a dog tag and are clothed in rugs and a random villager sports giant locks on his ears. I suppose these are interesting efforts by the costume department, but I’m not sure they add much to the narrative. Though the film has a couple of 'ticking time bomb' situations, we don't really root for characters because of the detachment we feel with them and the logical loopholes. For instance, after saving Thaenmalli (Revathy) through a rather wise plan, evil Justin's room is used as a safeplace to hide her. The reason given? "Justin will search everywhere, apart from his own house." Well, unsurprisingly, the predator returns to his house to rest… and you know the rest. Apart from the premise, earnest performances from Gautham Karthik and debutant Revathy are saving graces. Amid a group of caricatures, the work of these two actors stands out. Pugazh's performance might show evidence of effort, but the monotony of his act tested my patience. As, I suppose, much of the film did too.

Gautham Karthik And Revathy Sharma's performances, and Sean Roldan's music keep you engrossed for the most part, but the convoluted plot plays spoilsport.

Director NS Ponkumar’s August 16 1947 is a period drama that, despite its convoluted plot, works in parts.

What wins your admiration is some fine acting by Gautham Karthik, who plays the lead character (Paraman), and some exceptionally mellifluous tunes from music director Sean Roldan.

The story of August 16 1947 takes place in Sengadu, a village located deep in the jungles in South Tamil Nadu and far away from civilisation.

It begins on 12 August 1947 and ends on 16 August 1947, a day after India wins her independence.

The British, who are making preparations to leave India after having ruled (read: plundered) her for two centuries, don’t have the heart to let go of some of the resources found only in the country. One such resource is the world-famous cotton yarn of Sengadu.

The British depute one of their most notorious generals, General Robert (Richard Ashton), as the in-charge of the region.

Robert lives life like a dictator in Sengadu, whipping and killing the peasants of the village at will. His son Justin (Jason Shah), a pervert, keeps raping women or is busy hunting animals in the neighbouring jungles.

Father and son strike fear in the hearts of the villagers and use it to enslave them.

Robert, in particular, punishes the residents in the most inhuman of ways and makes an example of those who even slightly disobey him. Overcome by fear, the villagers slog for 18 hours a day to provide cotton yarn to the greedy British.

Aiding the British General in his atrocities is the local zamindar who, however, is careful to protect his daughter from the prying eyes of Robert’s son Justin.

To safeguard his daughter Deepali (Revathy Sharma), he declares her dead in the village when she was a child and secretly continues to bring her up inside his locked home.

Paraman, an orphan, who was touched by an act of kindness from Deepali when he was a boy, works for the zamindar.

It is under these circumstances that the British agree to give India her freedom in 1947.

When there are just a couple of days left for India to become free, Justin’s eyes fall on Deepali, who has now grown into a beautiful maiden. He demands that she be sent to him.

The zamindar, in a bid to protect his family’s honour, thinks it is better to kill his daughter than send her to Justin. He and his sons attempt to kill her but she is saved by Paraman.

Paraman tries to hide Deepali from everyone. However, a series of developments result in Justin finding Deepali. When Justin tries to misbehave with her, Paraman comes to her rescue again. He ends up killing Justin, inviting the wrath of Robert.

With just hours to go for India to become independent, Robert begins to hunt for Paraman and Deepali. Sadly though, nobody in Sengadu knows that India is to become free on 15 August as the village is cut off from the nearest town.

Loses steam after a point

August 16 1947 starts on an interesting note, showcasing the business interests of the British and the brutal methods they employ to maximise their profits.

It steadily keeps picking up the pace till the time Paraman kills Justin. However, it loses steam after that with far too many unnecessary developments being showcased in the story.

This reduces the intensity of the plot by a considerable margin. It also turns the film into a tedious affair, making one wish it would come to an end.

The performances

Gautham Karthik delivers yet another commendable performance as the brisk, sharp, courageous Paraman.

Newcomer Revathy Sharma comes up with a decent performance as the kind and considerate Deepali.

While their performances are good, their sequences together don’t impress much as the chemistry between them is missing.

Mellifluous music

The biggest strength of the film is Sean Roldan’s mellifluous music which charms you from start to finish.

It is not just the background score that impresses even the songs have high retention value and command your attention. In short, Sean Roldan’s music for the film is simply outstanding.

Had it delivered just one idea instead of trying to put across so many points, the film would have been so much better.

India’s independence is one topic that has been an intriguing idea to explore in films. In Tamil cinema, films like Indian, Madrasapattinam and several other movies enjoy a special place in the hearts of people. AR Murugadoss’ production venture, August 16, 1947, was cut from the same cloth. The fictional story is about a secluded village called Sengadu, where people do not know that they have attained independence. . Paraman (Gautham Karthik) is a petty thief and an orphan in Sengadu. The village is headed by Robert (Richard Ashton) and his son, Justin (Jason Shah). While Robert tortures the villagers physically, Justin yanks away the young women to rape them. Meanwhile, a zamindar (Madhusudhan Rao) and his family keep their daughter (Revathy Sharma) hidden so Justin doesn’t set eyes on her. What happens days and hours before they finally attain independence forms the story.

Director NS Ponkumar’s August 16, 1947, has an interesting plot. The idea of getting independence after enduring several years of slavery and torture has ample scope for emotions. Add a love story to it, the film will have enough meat to make it engrossing. Despite having all the necessary elements, August 16, 1947 is a damp squib, thanks to the orchestrated proceedings.

We are introduced to the village of Sengadu, where slavery is prevalent. People are made to work for the British for 15-16 hours. They are not allowed to drink water or urinate. Women get kidnapped just to be raped by Justin. Men in the village are willing to kill their wives and daughters to save them from getting raped. While these are template sequences to evoke positive emotions from the audience, one ends up staring at the screen with no emotion. Thanks to the highly predictable screenplay, every sequence and its follow-up seem orchestrated.

If that’s not enough, there are glaring logical loopholes which make it difficult to take the film seriously. Every conflict gets resolved in the next scene. We get to see Paraman’s traumatic childhood and how his mother passed away. Before the sequence ends, we predict how it’s going to turn out. This also gets a callback in the second half. Likewise, the director stacks new subplots one after the other in the first half. When they get closure, it fails to create an impact.

Gautham Karthik as Paraman delivered an earnest performance in the film. Pugazh is his sidekick and gets to play a serious role. In the second half, his performance stood out. Revathy Sharma, too, delivered a neat performance.

August 16, 1947 has a high production value, thanks to producer AR Murugadoss. The setworks and the costumes transport us to the 40s and make you curious to learn about life back then. Cinematographer SK Selvakumar’s work is impeccable, and so is Sean Roldan’s music.

August 16, 1947 is a film that has a promising idea, which is plagued by an unimpressive screenplay.

What if a village in the hinterlands of Tamil Nadu, one that is in the southern tail end of the Western Ghats, doesn’t get the message that India has gotten its independence on August 15, 1947? Worse, what if the local British officer chooses to keep villagers in the dark about the biggest news in the history of the country? That’s the premise of Gautham Karthik’s upcoming period film August 16 1947, produced by ace director AR Murugadoss.

NS Ponkumar, an erstwhile assistant director of Murugadoss, has written and directed the film. The trailer of the movie released on Tuesday promises a brutal story about a village that suffers at the hands of a menacing imperialist. The trailer also hints at a love story between the lead character played by Gautham and the daughter of a zamindar, who is not let out of the house by her family.

Earlier, during a media interaction, the director said that August 16 1947 is essentially about freedom. It is not just about the emancipation of the country, it also deals with what freedom means for an individual. The lead character is a brat, who doesn’t bother about the greater good of the country or his village. All he cares about is his lover, and when he realises the ultimate freedom of his whole village will only save his love, he hits back at the white supremacist.

Other than Gautham Karthik, the film also stars Pugazh, Revathy Sharma, Richard Ashton and Jason Shah. Sean Roldan has composed the music for the film.

August 16 1947 will be released on April 7, 2023.

Ns ponkumar’s tamil-language movie has been dubbed into hindi..

An isolated village in Tamil Nadu under the control of a pitiless British officer and his perverse son is on the verge of freedom – but the villagers don’t know it yet. From this promising premise, writer-director NS Ponkumar has crafted a cartoonish and gratuitously violent alternative history of the Independence movement.

Robert (Richard Ashton) and his son Justin (Jason Shah) have established a reign of terror in the cotton-rich Sengadu. Wielding whips, cutting tongues, mounting bodies on spikes – Robert and Justin prefer medieval forms of punishment. Justin also preys on the girls of Sengadu.

Landlord (Mudhusudhan Rao) is Robert’s most prominent collaborator. Although the villagers are familiar with the Indian National Army slogan “Give me your blood and I will give you freedom”, they are entirely unaware that a lengthy anti-colonial movement is going to bear fruit in a matter of days.

Robert, who believes wholly in his self-invented maxim “Five minutes spent, 12 pounds wasted!” whips some more to extract as many riches from the village as he can before he hands over charge to Indian administrators. An unlikely hero turns up in the form of the village outlier Paraman (Gautham Karthik), who snaps out of his complacency after events involving the landlord’s daughter Dipali (Revathy).

Ponkumar’s Tamil-language August 16 1947 has been dubbed into Hindi and released with a UA certificate. Parental guidance is advisable for a film that might thoroughly confuse young history-minded viewers.

Nearly always loud and attached to brutal methods of dispatch, the 144-minute movie balances its elements ably enough up until the interval. The post-interval bits are a mess of confused plotting, hammy acting, and a series of mindless deaths.

Robert and Justin are the kind of comic-book villains who provide the laughs even when in the middle of demonstrating the most horrible behaviour. Robert, in particular, is a scream, screeching out orders and strenuously rolling his eyes to live up to his reputation as “a cross between Adolf Hitler and Changez Khan”. By contrast, the film’s leads are models of restraint.

Director Ponkumar has simply been too swept away by his RRR knockoff to bring his saga of suffering to a close. Emancipation from the unremitting histrionics never quite comes.

The repeated violence has its desired effect: it leaves the audience numb. By the time we meet the man whose tongue has been cut off and who is repeatedly told to express himself clearly because he can’t be understood, it’s hard to care whether freedom is around the corner or not, whether for Sengadu or the bludgeoned viewer.

Singaad, a fictional village set in Madras during the time just before the country got Independence, is unaware of the fact that Britishers are leaving the country. The small village consists of a few people who are slaves to its Dictator, Major Robert (Richard Ashton) and his r*pist son Justin (Jason Sha).

The story spans over a few days before the independence in which Param (Gautham Karthik), Robert’s footsoldier but an ‘Indian’ at heart, decided to unite the villagers against the Britishers for his selfish reasons. At a place where men bury their daughters alive only to avoid them getting r*ped by British rulers, workers aren’t allowed to drink water or pee during working hours, even a day’s delay in conveying the news of Independence might end up in destroying many lives.

N.S. Ponkumar manages the script, screenplay & direction of the film, making sure to ruin every department equally. The whole movie seems to be designed after a one-liner development of “A village unaware of Independence because of its brutal British rulers.” To all my aspiring writers, read the one-liner and think of the worst probable story you can get around it; it’d still be better than it’s shown here.

Makers: How much drama will you add to dramatise the situation of the film?

NS Ponkumar: Yes.

The brutality shown to dramatise the situation doesn’t connect even once because of the sheer lack of building anything around it. So, even when an underage girl gets caught (and almost groped) for working in disguise as a boy, you won’t feel a thing because of the lacklustre skills at world-building.

August 16 1947 Movie Review: Star Performance

Gautham Karthik, who looked like a love child of Kichcha Sudeep and Allu Arjun to me, despite getting the meatiest role, emerged as underwhelming due to the film’s writing. There’s no single scene where he can optimally showcase his acting skills.

Revathy plays the female lead without any voice of her own. She gets into the dumb skin of her character profusely well but doesn’t really get any chance to shine bright.

Richard Ashton, as the big brutal Brit hams more than Rakhi Sawant , is hamming nowadays on Instagram. He’s so loud and over the top that he crosses all the lines which could’ve restrained him from being a caricature. Jason Sha remains subtle & wicked at the same time, holding the skills to annoy you with his mere presence.

August 16 1947 Movie Review: Direction, Music

NS Ponkumar’s debut film turns out to be a good idea executed poorly. He almost got the gist right but failed to create something intriguing. He’ll need to brush up on his writing skills first before working on the routine direction.

Sean Roldan’s background score is so loud that it overpowers the inane melodrama happening on-screen. None of the songs helps in overcoming the chaos happening otherwise.

All said and done, it had an emotional subject in hand, but still, what’s lacking from the film are emotions.
