Simple experiments

These simple experiments don’t require much prep and can be done with items you probably alreay have at home.

It’s almost Summer! If you are like us, you can’t wait to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and have fun! If you are a regular here, you know just how much we love science . For us, summer is the perfect time to do some of the summer science activities for kids we have been putting on our to-do list all year. If you are looking for inexpensive, easy projects that are great for summertime, you have come to the right place!

Icy Science Activities for Kids

I can’t think of a better way to enjoy the summer, than with a nice cold science experiment. Here are just a few that we love and adore. They are simple and easy to set up. Best of all, your kids will want to do them OVER and OVER again.

Lego Ice Excavation Science  | Our lego-lovers are obsessed with incorporating their legos into their everyday acience activites. We had so much fun with this lego ice excavation science activty!

1. Sticky Ice | Turn a Piece of Ice into Glue  using this simple and easy experiment using salt and ice. You can try this one today in your kitchen or wait for a warm day when you just want something fun to cool you off.

2. Icy Treasures | Ice Excavations with Lego , Rainbows , or Spacemen  can be downright exciting for kids. They can test a variety of materials to try to save their beloved toys that are stuck inside the ice. The variations are endless.

3.  Fizzing Ice Cubes  | Another simple kitchen science activity that your kids are sure to love. The colors and the tactile sensory fun are an added bonus.

Bubbling, Exploding and Fizzy Experiments

What kid doesn’t want to explode something, right? Summer is perfect for these messy science activities because you can get outside and bubble or fizz away. The bigger the better!

Exploding Lunch Bag  | Learn about gas and expansion through this simple and fun activity. My kids have done this at their dad’s house and absolutely love it. I know we will be trying it here this summer too!

Rainbow Bubble Snakes   | Who wouldn’t want to try this? I have seen this over and over and I just can’t wait to try it. I love how it will open the door for such great scientific conversations about bubbles. I can already imagine all the questions, can’t you?

Pop Rocks  | Try to blow up balloons with this classic candy. We have this and Mento science on our list for this summer. There is some fascination with seeing the explosive chemical reaction that kids just love!

Lemon Suds  | Okay, I might have put this in here just because its Lemon. No, that’s not it, I think it is a beautiful sudsy mess that would be perfect on the back porch on a warm summer day!

Summer Earth & Life Science Activities

What better time than summer to get outside and explore the world. Its a great time to take time to learn about the elements and the creatures that surround us. It is a great time to investigate things just a little further.

Exploding Volcano with a Twist  | Everyone has tried the volcano exploding science experiment, but this one has a fun twist that makes it even more realistic!

Study Rocks | If your kids are anything like mine, summer is a time for collections and bringing the outdoors inside. We loved collecting rocks and learning more about their hardness and their names through this science activity.

Beach Density Jar  | We love this beach density jar science experiment. It’s such a fun blend of science and sensory fun!

Edible Rock Cycle  | After you learn about rocks, it can be really fun to learn some about the different kinds of rocks, how they are formed and the rock cycle. This is a great activity for those rainy days when you need something fun and scientific for the kids.

Giant Worm Tower  | We love worms. We have a compost bin in our backyard and had a worm bin in the basement, but there is nothing like being able to see them work on such a grand scale. We might just have to make this soon!

Weather Science Activities for Kids

Summer is a time of so many different weather experiences. Kids are naturally curious about the way weather works such as rainstorms, clouds, changing temperatures and more.

Lego Shadows  | Take advantage of the summer sun with this super fun lego shadow activity! Build different lego towers and test out the shadows.

Rain Clouds   | We have still not made rain clouds and I can’t believe it. They are so beautiful and easy to make yet they explain so much. Just a little kitchen science to make the summer a little more fun. Try this outside on the deck or in the kitchen for a break from the sun.

Make Lightning | Summer is a time that is filled with thunderstorms and lightning. If your kids are anything like mine, they are fascinated by the lightning and how it works. This simple demonstration is perfect for explaining the phenomenon to them.

Cricket Thermometers | Did you know you can “read” the temperature with crickets. I didn’t, but I can’t wait to try now. This is such a simple activity to do on those summer nights when the sounds of summer are all around you.

Pool Science | Learn about Condensation at the pool with this simple science activity. This would be great for those minute that seem to never end when kids are waiting to get back in the water after lunch.

Wind Science |   Build your own Anemometer to learn about wind. This is such a beautiful project that will carry your summer learning into fall. What a great activity for any kid who loves to build and create.

Summer Chemistry and Physics Experiments

Sinking Soda Summer Science  | Add some science to your next backyard barbecue with this super simple summer science project finding out if soda sinks!

Outdoor Chemistry Lab  | Create an  Outdoor Chemistry Lab and test unknown materials and liquids. Just getting outside means you get to be messier and investigate those pesky unknown liquids with all your might. Get messy and enjoy the summer weather while becoming a budding chemist!

Summer Physics | Create and Engineer an egg drop project this summer. Test a variety of locations, conditions and contraptions. Summer is the perfect time for a project like this. We might even try this again, and do it into a pool.

Film Canister Rockets  | Engineer the coolest rockets using a simple technique. I know film canisters might be hard to come by. We are planning on trying this with Pringles cans or medicine containers. I think it will be a blast!

Solar Oven S’Mores | Build a  Solar Oven to cook your s’mores this summer. I know how much my kids love s’mores and they love them even more from a creation they engineered themselves.

Sprinkler Science | How cool is this simple sprinkler? Its such a perfect outdoor summer engineering project for kids. Don’t tell them what it does and let the fun begin with outdoor science fun.

Wth these must-try summer science activites you’ll be able to keep your kiddos busy all summer long. When the weather gets hot and the kids get whiny, be sure to pull out one of these super simple experiments and you’re pretty much guaranteed a meltdown-free afternoon!

So many fun ideas to try! We just did the Mentos and cola one, and it was a huge hit. I think we need to try the Pop Rocks one next!

Let me begin by saying it was TOUGH to narrow this list down to 10!  What I share on Fun-A-Day is about a tenth of the science fun we actually try out, too!  With that being said, here are our top 10 science experiments for kids to try out this summer.  My son helped me decide on the list, so it’s officially “kid-approved”!

COLD CHEMICAL REACTIONS

Let the kids explore chilly science experiments on a warm summer day. A fun way to cool down and learn about science while playing!  Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Summer Science Materials

I often find that science is one of the students’ favorite subjects to study in preschool. And I think it’s really important to foster that interest by giving the students plenty of opportunities to study and explore science concepts.

And as such, it will be helpful to keep some science-related product on-hand in your classroom this summer. Check out this list for some science product suggestions (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):

Three Weeks of Science Camp

Last summer, we held our very own garden science camp. It was brilliant fun, and we all learned a lot! It was a great way to spend time together away from screens and just generally work as a team to solve problems.

If your children love science, I’d definitely recommend trying a DIY science camp this summer, we’ll be doing it again, although maybe on a slightly smaller scale.

I’ve pulled together a list of 15 science experiments we really enjoyed, but if any don’t take your fancy, have a look at our other science projects for more ideas.

I’ve also got lots of easy ideas for science at home , with FREE printable instructions, so do check those out too!

Science Camp Week 1

Day 1 – giant bubbles.

This is a great activity for kids of all ages as older children can experiment to find the perfect bubble mix of water, dish soap ( washing up liquid ), glycerine and cornflour for making extra-large bubbles.

This bubble recipe on Red Ted Art is a great starting point!

Day 2 – Heart Rate Investigation

Investigate the effect of exercise on heart rate in this fun science experiment. Children can also make their own super simple stethoscope , to listen to a friend’s heart.

Day 3 – Colour Changing Flowers

This simple summer science experiment works in just a few hours and is a great way to demonstrate the transport of water in plants .

Day 4 – Fizzy Science

Everyone loves a fizzy baking soda experiment. I just love playing with baking soda and vinegar as it’s such a visual experience for children and can be themed in lots of different ways. These witchy potions are great for Halloween, but perhaps for a summer camp fairy potions might work better.

Day 5 – Giant Viscosity Race

This large scale viscosity race is great fun. Children test the viscosity of different liquids by racing them down a giant ramp. As an extension activity, children can even make their own cardboard ramp, but remember, it’ll need to be waterproof!

Science Camp Week 2

Day 6 – make your own slushy drinks.

There are two ways to do this. For younger children, you can freeze fruit juice into ice cube trays and let them leave the cubes in different places to see where they melt the fastest. Once the ice starts to melt, children can then use a spoon to make it into a slushy drink .

For older children, use the salt and ice trick to make slushy drinks.

Day 7 – Make a Red Cabbage Indicator

Did you know you can make a pH indictor using red cabbage ? Once kids have made the indicator, they can test different ( safe ) substances to see how they change colour. Baby wipes are a fun thing to test as well. Try a water based and non water based wipe.

Day 8 – Surface Tension Experiments

Try a magic milk experiment, race lolly sticks and lots more surface tension activities .

Day 9 – Make a Mini Water Cycle

Learn about the water cycle with this easy mini water cycle model . Children could even make a mini plastic bag water cycle to take home.

Day 10 – Skittles Experiment

Make a rainbow on a plate with this colourful skittles experiment .

Science Camp – Week 3

Day 11 – candy chromatography.

Sticking with the candy theme, this candy chromatography experiment is great fun and super easy. All you need is some filter paper, paper clips, a container, water and colourful candies.

Day 12  – Make a Magnet Maze

Magnet mazes are great fun and a cool way to learn about magnetism. These can also be easily themed. Children could use their favourite characters from a book or TV show.

Day 13 – Rockets

You can’t have science camp without rockets! Film canister rockets are nice and easy but great fun to watch and a water powered bottle rocket would be a fantastic way to end science camp with a bang!

Day 14 – Zip Lines

Homemade zip lines keep kids busy for hours. Children could make a zip line for a favourite teddy or theme it. We once made a zip line for Jack to escape the giant, but this would also work for helping Rapunzel escape from her tower.

Day 15 – Candy House

Create a candy house for Hansel and Gretal or a new house for the three little pigs. My children just loved this activity. We started the day shopping for sweets that we thought would be good for the task and searching for sticky substances to stick everything together.

Summer Science Projects To Do Outdoors

Get out and explore nature! The following summer science projects are best to do outside on a sunny day.

Make a Super Bubble Solution  – why are bubbles round? Find out, plus add a secret ingredient to make extra strong bubbles that will last longer!

• Balloon Rocket Car + Video  – watch our video demonstration of the homemade rocket car in action! Spend some time building your own using a plastic bottle.
• Build a Wormery  – go digging in the backyard or garden to find 5 earthworms, and build them a habitat or wormery where you can observe how they aerate soil.
• Flower Dissection  – summer is the perfect time to learn about the parts of a plant. Use any flower from your yard, but lilies and irises work especially well.

• Scavenger Hunt Activities  – plan a nature scavenger hunt this summer. Use our scavenger hunt list, or make your own of objects to find in nature.
• Solar Oven from a Pizza Box  – do a summer cookout with science style! Make hot dogs, grilled cheese, or even s’mores with this homemade solar oven.
• Solar Water Purifier  – use heat from the sun to turn salt water into fresh water. It may seem like magic, but it works because of the scientific principle of evaporation.
• Sun Prints  – Learn about UV rays as you make unique art pieces. The sun will fade the color from construction paper, leaving a print of objects you place on top of the paper.

• Crack Open a Geode + Video  – learn how to safely crack open a geode to see if there are crystals inside!
• Make a Paper Flying Machine  – you can make your glider inside, but its more fun to fly it outside! Test different designs to make the best paper flying machine.
• Launch a Bottle Rocket – Study Newton’s laws of motion as you build rockets that soar up to 150 feet.
• Make a Mushroom Spore Print  – this art project teaches kids about fungi. Create a high impact nature print of white mushroom spores on black paper.

• Explore the Beach  – next time you visit the seashore, be a beach scavenger! Use our printable coloring page and worksheet to study animals and plants that live near the ocean.
• Make a Rainbow  – you can make a rainbow using light from the sun and water from a garden hose! Study light and color with this quick project.

Summer Science Projects To Do Indoors

If it’s cloudy or rainy, or you need a break from the sun, try one of these summer science projects to add some fun to your day!

• Quick Crystal Cup  – grow needle-like crystals in just a few hours! Make a crystal growing solution out of water and Epsom salt. Stick it in the refrigerator and prepare to be amazed.

• Make Jell-O Play Dough  – explore kitchen science with this recipe! The play dough is fully edible, and will last for weeks of squishing, rolling, and shaping fun.
• Homemade Butter – shake and roll whipping cream into fresh butter! This project is a lot of fun, and it teaches about the science of emulsion.
• Make a Rubber Ball  – learn about polymers by making your own colorful bouncy ball! You’ll need household items like glue, borax, and cornstarch.
• Chromatography + Video  – watch our video to see how to separate the colors from a black marker. You may be surprised!
• Make Invisible Ink  – make three different kinds of invisible inks with this science project. Learn about chemical reactions, too.
• Elephant Toothpaste  – use yeast and hydrogen peroxide in this spin-off of a classic chemistry experiment. Foam will come streaming out of a flask!
• Homemade Lava Lamp + Video  – watch bubbles sink and rise, and learn about polar and non-polar substances with this cool experiment using household items.

• Make Your Own Slime  – see four different kid-tested recipes for making the best slime around. Make classic slime, oobleck, glooze, or transparent slime.
• Egg in a Bottle + Video  – learn about the relation of temperature and pressure as you watch an egg get sucked into a bottle. See our video, then try it for yourself.
• Watch Seeds Grow  – start plants indoors, and watch their roots form. You just need a few household items to see what happens beneath the soil when you plan a seed.
• Collapsing Styrofoam Cup + Video  – use acetone to instantly melt a styrofoam cup! If you don’t have the materials right now, take a look at the video demonstration.
• Cartesian Diver  – learn more about submarines and scuba divers with this mini diver that will go deep into the water, then rise back up. Discover buoyancy and liquid density.
• Make a Simple Motor + Video  – see for yourself how the forces of electricity and magnetism can work together by building a motor using simple materials.
• DIY Sugar Scrub  – make a sugar scrub, and learn how it benefits the skin. This spa science project also makes a great gift.
• Traveling Plant Roots  – see how the roots of a plant take up water from the soil. You will need a carrot, water, and food coloring. You can also try this experiment with celery. Look for vegetables that have leaves attached.
• Homemade Whale Blubber  – learn how animals like whales, seals, and penguins keep warm in freezing temperatures. Make homemade insulation and see if it works to block out cold.
• Make a Fossil Cast  – demonstrate how fossils are made by using modeling clay and plaster of paris. You can turn any plant or toy animal into a fossil.

• Milk Carton Periscope  – look forward but see behind you? It’s possible with a periscope. Build your own using a milk carton and two mirrors.
• Go on a Magnet Hunt  – print out this worksheet to go on a magnet hunt around the house! This activity is perfect for rainy day fun.

About Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk is the administrative center and the largest city of Khabarovsk Krai. It is located  30 km from the Chinese border. Khabarovsk is the second largest city in the Russian Far East, after Vladivostok.

The city became the administrative center of the Far Eastern Federal District of Russia in 2002. Population: 577,345 (2008). The city lies at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri Rivers, about 800 kilometers north of Vladivostok and is accessible from there by an overnight train running along the Trans-Siberian railway. Rail distance from Moscow is 8,523 km.

The city was founded in 1858 as a military outpost named Khabarovka, after a Russian explorer Yerofei Khabarov who founded in 1649 first russian settlement on the Amur river. The post later became an important industrial center for the region. In 1880 Khabarovka received the status of city, and in 1884 it officially became the capital of the Priamurskoye General-Governorship. Only in 1893 the city was given its current name of Khabarovsk.

With very good situation at the confluence of the Amur and Ussuri rivers and the construction of Transsiberian Railroad the city began to develop very quickly. In 1894, a department of Russian Geographical Society was formed in Khabarovsk and began initiating the foundation of libraries, theaters, and museums in the city. Since then, Khabarovsk's cultural life has flourished. Since 1938 Khabarovsk began the center of Khabarovsky Krai.

Now Khabarovsk is one of the largest and beautiful cities of Russian Far East. It is also an industrial, transport, cultural and scientific center of the Far East. The city has about 100 enterprises of mechanical engineering, metal working, food, easy industries and other branches. The city is the largest transport knot of Far East region. The Khabarovsk railway junction is the biggest in the region. River port is one of the largest on the Amur river.  Khabarovsk is a cultural centre. There are 4 museums, 4 professional theatres, many creative organizations, the union of writers, of composers, of artists. 

We invite you in Khabarovsk to enjoy walking tour at the broad Amursky Boulevard with its many vibrant shops and perhaps visit the local market or walking tour from the Lenin Square to Utes via Muravyov-Amursky Street, where you can find traditional Russian cuisine restaurants and shops with souvenirs. You can go to the Khetskir National Reserve where you can see the flora and fauna of the region or to the village Sikachi Alyan – ancient Nanaian village.

City tour of Khabarovsk, 2,5 hours

During the city tour you`ll know history of Khabarovsk foundation and development, you`ll see old buildings and modern areas of the city, its monuments and memorial complexes. You`ll visit main sights of Khbarovsk walking at the oldest city area, in the historical downtown – Muravyev-Amursky street admiring the beautiful architecture that survived during the Civil War.

Visit to the Museum of Regional Studies after N.I. Grodekov, 1,5 hours

The Museum of Regional Studies was opened on the initiative of the Priamursky department of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society in 1894. After renovation Museum was re-opened in 1995. It was named after N.I. Grodekov – the honored citizen of Khabarovsk, the governor-general of the Priamursky Territory, the explorer and the active creator of the museum reserves. In 2000 the Khabarovsk Museum of Regional Studies has been given the status of the scientific institution and the title "The best museum of the year 2000".

The main attraction of Khabarovsk has always been the Amur river, one of the longest rivers in Russia and the 8th longest river in the world. Its length is 4,440 km including 1,000 km within the Khabarovsky Krai, and 45 km within the city of Khabarovsk. The Amur river has become the symbol and the most popular post card object.

Excursion to the Khekhtsir Nature Reserve, 4 hours

Khekhtsir Nature Reserve was founded in 1963. It is located 48 km southwest of Khabarovsk, occupies territory of 451,25 square kilometers. The reserve is part of the Sikhote Alin Mountain Range stretching for 968 km with peaks up to 2,500-3,300 feet high. During excursion you`ll see the beautiful nature of the taiga. The guide will tell you about the local plants, trees, birds and animals of this Reserve.

Excursion to the Nanaj village Sikachi-Alyan, 7 hours

The history of the Far East is a part of the history of the native population in the area. Since the antiquity the lands of the river Amour, the coasts of the sea of Okhotsk and of the Peaceful Ocean were exploited by many ethnic groups: Nanaïtsi, Oultchi, Nivkhi, etc. Nowdays the Nanaïtsi live near Khabarovsk, in the village Cikatchi Alian. You will have the unique chance to visit a nanaï village, to know the Nanaj culture.
