The program, Doctor of Philosophy in Strategic Management is unique in providing professionally qualified Strategic management experts, academics, top class strategic decision makers for academic institutions and management industries in Malaysia and overseas. The doctoral research is typically designed with the concepts of strategic formulation, innovative organizations and market competition, and addresses a wide variety of topics that have direct or indirect implications for organizational effectiveness. Students are encouraged to conduct research that focuses on recent economic problems, planning strategies to overcome and sustain with superior competitive performance. Students are equipped with the ‘softer’ business skills, employers value, such as emotional intelligence, creative thinking and high impact communication. LUC prepares the participants to pursue cutting edge, world class interdisciplinary research with mastery of the scope of knowledge in a respective area. The students will be able to pursue significant conceptual research.

For successful completion of PhD degree in LUC, each candidate should publish minimum of Four research articles in scopus indexed journals, with Lincoln affiliation.

Program Aim

The programme aims to provide students with rigorous, in-depth andadvanced research knowledge within Strategic Management. The objective of theprogramme is to develop an understanding and critical appreciation of alternativeapproaches, methodologies and paradigms of research in the field of businessand management. The programme of Ph.D. in Strategic Management will produceStrategic Managers consultant who are:

  • Knowledgeable and skillful in strategic management recommend strategies appropriate to strategic management field.
  • Appraise original research independently by adhering to legal, ethical responsibilities with appropriate professional attitude
  • Demonstrate leadership, critical thinking and problem solving qualities through effective communication within a team.

The minimum score for each programme can be vary from the below list, candidates are required to check for each programme requirements.

  • A minimum of Band 5 for IELTS; or
  • A minimum score of 40 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
  • A minimum of Band 7.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or
  • A minimum score of 154 for Cambridge English: Advance (CAE)/Proficiency (CPE) /Preliminary (PET) /First (FCE)/ Linguaskill Online min. score 154; or
  • A minimum score of 47 for Pearson Test of English (PTE); or
  • A minimum of Band 107 for CIEP Level (ELS); or
  • A minimum of Band 3.5 for Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

Exemption is given to candidate if:

  • English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or
  • Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)
  • Full-time: Min 4 semesters / Max 10 semesters
  • Part-time: Min 6 semesters / Max 15 semesters

We offered two entry pathway for this PhD programme, which is normal mode and prior to publication mode. Our PhD by Prior Publication mode provides a unique pathway for you to achieve a Doctoral award based on your existing body of work. We recognise the value of your prior publications and include them as a significant part of your submission for the Doctoral award.

Normal Mode

You need to fulfill one of the requirements below: .

  • Masters in the related discipline; OR
  • Passed Bachelor's degree with min. CGPA 3.67 and Registered as a Masters candidate and passed related qualifying assessment OR
  • Any other equivalent qualification recognized by Malaysian government or accepted by the Taylor's University Senate and Any of condition of the above would require student's research proposal to be approved.

International Students

English Requirement: IELTS 6.0 (May join IEN preparatory course and achieve the IELTS score)

Accelerated PhD Programme

Bachelor's degree candidates who are registered for master's degree programmes may apply to convert to the doctoral degree programmes subjected to the following conditions:

  • Within 1 year for full time and within 2 years for part-time candidates
  • Having shown competency and capability in conducting research at doctoral level through rigorous internal evaluation
  • Approval of the Taylor’s University Senate

If Your Bachelor Degree Are From Different Fields

  • Students without a qualification in the related fields or relevant working experience requires to undergo and pass a bridging module.
  • CGPA above 2.50 must have at least one (1) year of relevant working experience; or
  • CGPA 2.00 to 2.50 must have at least five (5) years of relevant working experience;
  • In addition, students will need to undergo a rigorous internal assessment

Prior Publication Mode

You will need to fulfill one of the below:

  • Obtain a master's degree in the field or related fields accepted by the HEP Senate
  • Obtain other qualifications equivalent to a master's degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia
  • Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the HEP

In addition to the above criteria, those who want to join Doctoral Degree by Retrospective or Prior Publication mode must include the below to the formal application:

  • Minimum of 5 publications or equivalent works in alignment with the theme of the specialisation
  • An executive summary of the above publications to demonstrate the applicant’s contribution to knowledge in the field
  • A list of scholarly published work

The minimum language proficiency of the candidates must be determined by the HEP consistent with applicable programme standards or based on the needs of the programme, i.e., learning outcomes and the medium of instruction.

A Selection Committee must be established to review the formal application for PhD by Retrospective or Prior Publication and recommend to the Senate to obtain approval.

Criteria for published works

  • Published work must encompass high-quality journals, monographs, books, research-based chapters in books, electronic publications which have not been used to obtain other awards or deemed a part of those awards.
  • The publications must be published within a period not exceeding ten (10) years from the date of submission.
  • For the five (5) nominated publications, the candidate must be the principal author with the contributions of others clearly defined.

How long is the candidature?

The minimum duration of candidature is 6 months and must not exceed 2 years.

What are the criteria for the award of the degree?

The minimum requirement for the award of the degree is to: 

  • Pass thesis examination and viva-voce/ oral examination.
  • Confirmation of meeting minimum candidature period (from the first day of intake commencement to confirmation of satisfactory amendment of thesis/dissertation by examiners).

How will progression tracking be done?

Progression tracking is done by monitoring of research progress periodically through:

  • Regular consultation with the supervisors (supervisor-supervisee log);
  • Progress report; and Seminars (research seminar, thesis completion seminar).

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

Field of research:, introduction.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest research degree which involves an academic exercise to produce a research thesis under a close supervision of a faculty member (Supervisor). The PhD thesis produced should make scholarly significant contributions in the chosen field of study. Students also have the opportunity to develop and strengthen their research skills, explore their critical and analytical skill, expand networking or build collaborations on publications.

Students will be supervised by academic staff who will advise them on the direction and structure of the research throughout the entire PhD study. The students put forward a research topic of their interest and they can work on research projects based on their supervisors’ research interest. This should be mutual between supervisor and student. The main objective is to develop independent, skilful and successful researchers who can work on promising ideas, thus can conduct more researches independently upon their graduation. Following a successful proposal defense session, students would start to gather research data, analyse data and write their thesis. The conferment of the degree is subject to the successful completion of the thesis and viva voce. FM offers you a research experience that unleash your ultimate potential in shaping your future.

A Master’s Degree from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia or any other institutions of higher learning recognized by the Senate; or Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s degree and experience in the relevant field recognized by the Senate; or Candidate who a currently registered in a Master’s Degree programme at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and approved by the Graduate Studies Committee of the respective faculty and the Senate.

The PhD programme on the Malaysia campus aims to nurture global research professionals capable of making significant contributions in fields of economic and societal benefit through a clear demonstration of sustained scholarship.

Our aim is to enable each student an opportunity to deploy knowledge, understanding, critical thinking and develop an analytical approach in identifying and resolving problems.

Accreditation

All Heriot-Watt degrees are accredited by the MQA (Malaysia Qualifications Agency).

Programmes delivered at the Malaysia campus lead to degrees awarded by Heriot-Watt University.

Entry requirements

  • Fees and funding

The mode of delivery is via supervised research work of typical duration three years and culminating in the submission of a thesis normally within 4 years from the date of first registration. Students will work under the supervision of an expert academic team; normally comprising staff from both our Malaysia and UK campuses.

Students will also be expected to publish their work in high impact journals (although this is not a pre-requisite for viva and/or graduation).

All applicants should hold an MSc recognised by the Malaysian government and deemed acceptable by the University. Occasionally, candidates holding a first class BSc (Hons) or BA (Hons) may be admitted if they also have significant research experience. Candidates holding an MBA are first required to complete our PG Certificate in Research Methods delivered by the Edinburgh Business School.

Some PhD students will be invited to interview prior to a formal offer being made.

  • Copies of full academic transcripts from all previous academic degree courses and copies of certificates for degrees already awarded.
  • A detailed research proposal.

English language requirements

In addition to meeting the required academic levels of achievement, students will also need to demonstrate an ability to speak, read and write in English at level IELTS-6.5 or equivalent.

Research Degree Candidates must enrol every year for the duration of their studies, including when progressing as a Continued Affiliation (Writing-Up) student. At the time of this transfer, Continued Affiliation students will be required to pay a fee of RM700 for the first year and RM2700 thereafter while writing-up.

Note: Continued Affiliation students will have the same support as Research Degree Candidates in their normal period of study, including access to the Supervisory Team.

  • a student currently pursuing full time master’s programme under sub regulation 6 (a) at the University and recommended by the Faculty’s/ Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee for status conversion to a doctoral programme with approval from the Dean/ Director; or
  • Bachelor Degree with distinction from the University or any institution of higher learning subject to what is prescribed by the Faculty/ Institute and approval by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and/ or with accreditation recognised by a foreign Accreditation Board
  • any other qualification recognised by the Senate obtained through the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); or
  • fulfils other requirements prescribed by the programme (if applicable); and
  • fulfils requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS

1. An international candidate is required to fulfill the English Language proficiency requirements as follows:

a) Obtained TOEFL (550), IELTS(6) or MUET (4) results which fulfil the score or minimum band requirements prescribed by the programme; or

b) For certain programmes, a candidate is required to sit for an English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to achieve the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM) in a maximum period of two (2) semesters before he is allowed to register for the study programme. The candidate shall register as a Non Graduating Student.

2. The Faculty/Institute may grant exemption to the requirements specified in subregulation (1) for the international candidate who:

a) will be writing his/her thesis/dissertation in the Malay/ Arabic languages;

b) has the academic qualifications obtained from any local universities recognised by the Senate; or

c) is originally from a country where English is the official language or he/she has the academic qualifications obtained from any higher learning institution which uses English as the medium of instruction.

The candidate may be exempted from the requirements stated in subregulation (2), but the candidate shall sit for the English Proficiency Test (EPT) and if he/she fails to obtain the level specified by the programme, the candidate is required to attend and pass the English Proficiency Module (EPM).

The Doctor of Philosophy in Management Programme (by research) prepares competent practitioners and researchers for a firm grounding in Management who can foster research and development of new knowledge in specific areas. Through supervised research work, doctoral students are equipped with in-depth knowledge of Management and a focused understanding in the chosen area of expertise.

This PhD in Management opens many career paths not limited to academic field, but also for advancing in corporate and GLC sectors.

Course information

Entry requirements.

  • A Master’s Degree in Business [Level 7, Malaysian Qualification Framework (MQF)] or in other related discipline and recognized by the University Senate; OR
  • A Master’s degree (Level 7, MQF) in non-related fields as accepted by the HEP Senate, subject to having relevant working experience and rigorous internal assessment; OR
  • A Master’s degree (Level 7, MQF) in non-related fields as accepted by the HEP Senate and without relevant working experience, subject to passing prerequisite courses; OR
  • Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree recognized by the Malaysian Government; OR
  • Candidates have first class Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification; OR
  • Candidates have obtained CGPA of at least 3.67 or equivalent from either an academic or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme; AND
  • Evaluated through rigorous internal assessment by UNITAR; AND

Experience can be cumulative experience even before acquiring required qualification for a particular level of study. However, the experience must be relevant to the level of study as well as the content.

A proposal of about 500 words in English must be submitted together with all the relevant documents required for admission to the University on the registration day.

Language Requirements

International students.

  • Minimum score of 6.0 for IELTS OR
  • Minimum score of 60 for TOEFL iBT OR its equivalent

Local Students

  • Credit in SPM English; OR
  • Pass an internal assessment (oral examination) set by the university, with a minimum grade of C. The panel of the assessment shall comprise of two senior members of the faculty / school and a representative from the English Language Department from Faculty of Education & Humanities (FEH) or other relevant department. The panel is appointed by the Dean / Director of the respective faculty / school / centers.

  • The Masters degree was conducted using English as medium of instruction. Proof to be obtained from the institution concerned.

This Doctoral Programme is intended to working adults, teaching and non-teaching professions who wish to enhance their research management skills as well as upgrading their academic and professional qualifications in the field of business management The programme is strongly research-oriented and emphasizes early and effective involvement in research. While most graduates undertake careers as lecturers, scholars, researchers working within academic environment, the doctoral degree can also lead to careers in industry and government. The programme is small and admits only a few candidates each year, involving an in-depth study in the management areas of Marketing, Strategic management, Human Resource, Entrepreneurship, Supply Chain & Logistic Management, Project Management and Islamic Management.

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • provide students with useful research knowledge in the areas of management and business so that they can keep abreast with the current thinking in the field.
  • equip students with corpus of current and researchable management issues.
  • orientate students with knowledge and experience in performing research related tasks such as applying appropriate presentation skills and referencing.
  • equip with communication and management skills.
  • equip students with critical, creative, innovative and productive skills in managing organizations or institutions through research activities.
  • provide students with various knowledge, skills and motivation to be managers, researchers and educators.
  • develop students professional attributes, ethics and quality leadership.
  • promote understanding of the diversity of races, cultures and beliefs among students.
  • provide students with educational experience so as to encourage life-long learning and research.

At the end of this programme students should be able to:

  • apply the research knowledge and skills learned to various tasks and situations.
  • demonstrate a comprehensive-knowledge of the field of study and be informed of the latest developments and trends.
