How to use homework to support student success.

COVID has brought many changes in education. What does it mean for homework?

School assignments that a student is expected to do outside of the regular school day—that’s homework. The general guideline is 10 minutes of nightly homework per grade level beginning after kindergarten. This amounts to just a few minutes for younger elementary students to up to 2 hours for high school students.

The guidance seems straightforward enough, so why is homework such a controversial topic? School disruptions, including extended periods of remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, have magnified the controversies yet also have provided an opportunity to rethink the purpose and value of homework.

Debates about the value of homework center around two primary issues: amount and inequity.

First, the amount of assigned homework may be much more than the recommended guidelines. Families report their children are stressed out over the time spent doing homework. Too much homework can challenge well-being given the restricted time available for sleep, exercise, and social connection. In a 2015 study , for example, parents reported their early elementary children received almost three times the recommended guidelines. In high school, researchers found an average of three hours of homework per night for students living in economically privileged communities.

Second, homework can perpetuate inequities. Students attending school in less economically privileged communities may receive little to no homework, or have difficulty completing it due to limited access to needed technology. This can translate into fewer opportunities to learn and may contribute to gaps in achievement.

There isn’t a ton of research on the effects of homework, and available studies certainly do not provide a simple answer. For example, a 2006 synthesis of studies suggested a positive influence between homework completion and academic achievement for middle and high school students. Supporters also point out that homework offers additional opportunities to engage in learning and that it can foster independent learning habits such as planning and a sense of responsibility. A more recent study involving 13-year-old students in Spain found higher test scores for those who were regularly assigned homework in math and science, with an optimal time around one hour—which is roughly aligned with recommendations. However, the researchers noted that ability to independently do the work, student effort, and prior achievement were more important contributors than time spent.

Opponents of homework maintain that the academic benefit does not outweigh the toll on well-being. Researchers have observed student stress, physical health problems, and lack of life balance, especially when the time spent goes over the recommended guidelines. In a survey of adolescents , over half reported the amount and type of homework they received to be a primary source of stress in their lives. In addition, vast differences exist in access and availability of supports, such as internet connection, adult assistance, or even a place to call home, as 1.5 million children experience homelessness in the United States

The COVID-19 pandemic has re-energized discussion about homework practices, with the goal to advance recommendations about how, when, and with whom it can be best used. Here’s a summary of key strategies:

Strategies for Educators

Make sure the tasks are meaningful and matched..

First, the motto “ quality over quantity ” can guide decisions about homework. Homework is not busy-work, and instead should get students excited about learning. Emphasize activities that facilitate choice and interest to extend learning, like choose your own reading adventure or math games. Second, each student should be able to complete homework independently with success. Think about Goldilocks: To be effective, assignments should be just right for each learner. One example of how do this efficiently is through online learning platforms that can efficiently adjust to skill level and can be completed in a reasonable amount of time.

Ensure access to resources for task completion.

One step toward equity is to ensure access to necessary resources such as time, space, and materials. Teach students about preparing for homework success, allocating classroom time to model and practice good study habits such as setting up their physical environment, time management, and chunking tasks. Engage in conversations with students and families to problem-solve challenges When needed, connect students with homework supports available through after-school clubs, other community supports, or even within a dedicated block during the school day.

Be open to revisiting homework policies and practices.

The days of penalizing students for not completing homework should be long gone. Homework is a tool for practicing content and learning self-management. With that in mind, provide opportunities for students to communicate needs, and respond by revising assignments or allowing them to turn in on alternative dates. Engage in adult professional learning about high-quality homework , from value (Should I assign this task?) to evaluation (How should this be graded? Did that homework assignment result in expected outcomes?). Monitor how things are going by looking at completion rates and by asking students for their feedback. Be willing to adapt the homework schedule or expectations based on what is learned.

Strategies for Families

Understand how to be a good helper..

When designed appropriately, students should be able to complete homework with independence. Limit homework wars by working to be a good helper. Hovering, micromanaging, or doing homework for them may be easiest in the moment but does not help build their independence. Be a good helper by asking guiding questions, providing hints, or checking for understanding. Focus your assistance on setting up structures for homework success, like space and time.

Use homework as a tool for communication.

Use homework as a vehicle to foster family-school communication. Families can use homework as an opportunity to open conversations about specific assignments or classes, peer relationships, or even sleep quality that may be impacting student success. For younger students, using a daily or weekly home-school notebook or planner can be one way to share information. For older students, help them practice communicating their needs and provide support as needed.

Make sure to balance wellness.

Like adults, children need a healthy work-life balance. Positive social connection and engagement in pleasurable activities are important core principles to foster well-being . Monitor the load of homework and other structured activities to make sure there is time in the daily routine for play. Play can mean different things to different children: getting outside, reading for pleasure, and yes, even gaming. Just try to ensure that activities include a mix of health-focused activities such as physical movement or mindfulness downtime.

Study: Homework Doesn’t Mean Better Grades, But Maybe Better Standardized Test Scores

The time students spend on math and science homework doesn’t necessarily mean better grades, but it could lead to better performance on standardized tests, a new study finds.

“When Is Homework Worth The Time?” was recently published by lead investigator Adam Maltese, assistant professor of science education at Indiana University, and co-authors Robert H. Tai, associate professor of science education at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education , and Xitao Fan, dean of education at the University of Macau. Maltese is a Curry alumnus, and Fan is a former Curry faculty member.

The authors examined survey and transcript data of more than 18,000 10th-grade students to uncover explanations for academic performance. The data focused on individual classes, examining student outcomes through the transcripts from two nationwide samples collected in 1990 and 2002 by the National Center for Education Statistics.

Contrary to much published research, a regression analysis of time spent on homework and the final class grade found no substantive difference in grades between students who complete homework and those who do not. But the analysis found a positive association between student performance on standardized tests and the time they spent on homework.

“Our results hint that maybe homework is not being used as well as it could be,” Maltese said.

Tai said that homework assignments cannot replace good teaching.

“I believe that this finding is the end result of a chain of unfortunate educational decisions, beginning with the content coverage requirements that push too much information into too little time to learn it in the classroom,” Tai said. “The overflow typically results in more homework assignments. However, students spending more time on something that is not easy to understand or needs to be explained by a teacher does not help these students learn and, in fact, may confuse them.

“The results from this study imply that homework should be purposeful,” he added, “and that the purpose must be understood by both the teacher and the students.”

The authors suggest that factors such as class participation and attendance may mitigate the association of homework to stronger grade performance. They also indicate the types of homework assignments typically given may work better toward standardized test preparation than for retaining knowledge of class material.

Maltese said the genesis for the study was a concern about whether a traditional and ubiquitous educational practice, such as homework, is associated with students achieving at a higher level in math and science. Many media reports about education compare U.S. students unfavorably to high-achieving math and science students from across the world. The 2007 documentary film “Two Million Minutes” compared two Indiana students to students in India and China, taking particular note of how much more time the Indian and Chinese students spent on studying or completing homework.

“We’re not trying to say that all homework is bad,” Maltese said. “It’s expected that students are going to do homework. This is more of an argument that it should be quality over quantity. So in math, rather than doing the same types of problems over and over again, maybe it should involve having students analyze new types of problems or data. In science, maybe the students should write concept summaries instead of just reading a chapter and answering the questions at the end.”

This issue is particularly relevant given that the time spent on homework reported by most students translates into the equivalent of 100 to 180 50-minute class periods of extra learning time each year.

The authors conclude that given current policy initiatives to improve science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, education, more evaluation is needed about how to use homework time more effectively. They suggest more research be done on the form and function of homework assignments.

“In today’s current educational environment, with all the activities taking up children’s time both in school and out of school, the purpose of each homework assignment must be clear and targeted,” Tai said. “With homework, more is not better.”

It turns out that parents are right to nag: To succeed in school, kids should do their homework.

Duke University researchers have reviewed more than 60 research studies on homework between 1987 and 2003 and concluded that homework does have a positive effect on student achievement.

Harris Cooper, a professor of psychology, said the research synthesis that he led showed the positive correlation was much stronger for secondary students --- those in grades 7 through 12 --- than those in elementary school.

"With only rare exception, the relationship between the amount of homework students do and their achievement outcomes was found to be positive and statistically significant," the researchers report in a paper that appears in the spring 2006 edition of "Review of Educational Research."

Cooper is the lead author; Jorgianne Civey Robinson, a Ph.D. student in psychology, and Erika Patall, a graduate student in psychology, are co-authors. The research was supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

While it's clear that homework is a critical part of the learning process, Cooper said the analysis also showed that too much homework can be counter-productive for students at all levels.

"Even for high school students, overloading them with homework is not associated with higher grades," Cooper said.

Cooper said the research is consistent with the "10-minute rule" suggesting the optimum amount of homework that teachers ought to assign. The "10-minute rule," Cooper said, is a commonly accepted practice in which teachers add 10 minutes of homework as students progress one grade. In other words, a fourth-grader would be assigned 40 minutes of homework a night, while a high school senior would be assigned about two hours. For upper high school students, after about two hours' worth, more homework was not associated with higher achievement.

The authors suggest a number of reasons why older students benefit more from homework than younger students. First, the authors note, younger children are less able than older children to tune out distractions in their environment. Younger children also have less effective study habits.

But the reason also could have to do with why elementary teachers assign homework. Perhaps it is used more often to help young students develop better time management and study skills, not to immediately affect their achievement in particular subject areas.

"Kids burn out," Cooper said. "The bottom line really is all kids should be doing homework, but the amount and type should vary according to their developmental level and home circumstances. Homework for young students should be short, lead to success without much struggle, occasionally involve parents and, when possible, use out-of-school activities that kids enjoy, such as their sports teams or high-interest reading."

Cooper pointed out that there are limitations to current research on homework. For instance, little research has been done to assess whether a student's race, socioeconomic status or ability level affects the importance of homework in his or her achievement.

This is Cooper's second synthesis of homework research. His first was published in 1989 and covered nearly 120 studies in the 20 years before 1987. Cooper's recent paper reconfirms many of the findings from the earlier study.

We know homework isn’t usually considered fun but, it doesn’t have to be fun to be helpful . We’d definitely understand why you might see it as a waste of time, that’s why for today’s blog we’re going to break down why homework is helpful for its learning benefits and its utility.

Reinforcing Learning

Homework serves as a valuable tool for reinforcing what students have learned in the classroom. When you learn topics in class, they’re often explained in a way that you can understand the material but, the real learning comes when you begin doing the work yourself. After all, there’s a reason why the expression “learn by doing” is a thing. By actively engaging with the material, you allow yourself to internalize concepts and improve in your own way, at your own pace.

Practicing Skills

Another reason why homework is important is that it allows you to practice and refine your skills. Whether it’s solving math problems, writing essays, or conducting scientific experiments, practice is crucial for mastery. Homework provides the necessary practice that helps you develop a deeper level of proficiency in various subjects. 

We actually go into the science of studying with practice examples in our blog post, Strategies for Studying Smarter, Not Hard . We’re not just saying this because we’re an educational site and we want you to like homework. We’re saying this because scientifically, practicing these skills will make you better at critical thinking and problem-solving. Will you always need to know the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell? Maybe, maybe not. Will you need to know how to quickly retrieve information to solve problems satisfactorily for the rest of your life? Absolutely.

Homework Provides Easy Grade Points

Everyone at some point or another has had a term riding on one particular test or exam and it definitely doesn’t feel great. Most of this time this is because of poor performance with assignments thus leading to lower grades. Homework assignments however, are an easy way to boost and reinforce your total GPA so that exams aren’t as a big of a deal (you should still prep for them responsibly however). 

This is what we mean when we say the utility of homework. Even if you feel like it’s not doing you any favors which, scientifically isn’t true, it is certainly doing your GPA a favor. Getting exceptional passing grades is easier on assignments because you can check your answers, ensure the correct responses are provided, and scoop up an easy A in the progress. Don’t be so quick to hate on homework, as long as you do it all, it’s actually doing you a favor!

Preparation for Tests

Homework plays a significant role in preparing you for assessments such as quizzes, tests, and exams. When you consistently complete homework assignments, you actively review and reinforce the material, making it easier to recall during assessments. Homework helps you identify areas where you need additional practice or clarification, enabling you to seek help before important evaluations.

Contrary to popular belief, homework can be a valuable tool for students. It reinforces learning, provides practice, provides an easier source of solid points, and prepares you for assessments. Homework — a dreaded word that means more work and less play. The mere thought of doing additional work after a seven-hour day (that begins extremely early) can be gruesome. Not to mention, many teens have other commitments after the school day ends.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 years old participate in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. And that’s a good thing because youth extracurricular involvement comes with benefits such as boosting academic performance, reducing risky behaviors (i.e., drug use and drinking), promoting physical health, and providing a safe structured environment. However, tag these extracurricular activities onto the end of a school day and you’ll find that many teens don’t get home until it's dark outside.

What about the teen who works a 15- to 20-hour job on top of an extracurricular activity? The US Department of Labor reports that one in five high school students have a part-time job, and those jobs too can come with added benefits. Teens who work often learn the value of a hard-earned dollar. They learn how to manage their money, learn to problem solve, and most importantly, they learn how to work with people. Plus, a job in high school is a great way to add valuable experience to a resume.

With so many after school opportunities available for teens, it can be extremely difficult for them to balance homework with their other commitments. Oftentimes, active kids simply don’t have enough time in a day to get all that’s asked of them finished. When it comes homework, in all my years of working in the public school system, I have never seen a student jump for joy when homework was assigned. Of course, there are some who were anxious to complete the assignment, but that was more to get it off their busy plate. Which brings us to the essential question — does homework serve a purpose?

There are those who stand firm and back the claim that homework does serve a purpose . They often cite that homework helps prepare students for standardized tests, that it helps supplement and reinforce what’s being taught in class, and that it helps teach fundamental skills such as time management , organization, task completion, as well as responsibility (extracurricular activities and work experience can also teach those fundamental skills).

Another argument for homework is that having students complete work independently shows that they can demonstrate mastery of the material without the assistance of a teacher. Additionally, there have been numerous studies supporting homework, like a recent study that shows using online systems to assign math homework has been linked to a statistically significant boost in test scores. So, there you have it: Homework has a lot of perks and one of those involves higher test scores, particularly in math. But don’t form your opinion just yet.

Although many people rally for and support homework, there is another school of thought that homework should be decreased, or better yet, abolished. Those who join this group often cite studies linking academic stress to health risks. For example, one study in the Journal of Educational Psychology showed that when middle school students were assigned more than 90 to 100 minutes of daily homework, their math and science test scores began to decline.

The Journal of Experimental Education published research indicating that when high school students were assigned too much homework, they were more susceptible to serious mental and physical health problems, high-stress levels, and sleep deprivation. Stanford University also did a study that showed more than a couple of hours of homework a night was counterproductive. Think about it — teens spend an entire day at school, followed by extracurricular activities and possibly work, and then they get to end their day with two to three hours of homework. Now that’s a long day! No wonder so many of our teens are sleep-deprived and addicted to caffeine? On average most teens only get about 7.4 hours of sleep per night but according to the American Academy of Pediatrics , they need 8 to 10 hours.

Regardless of where you stand on the homework debate, a few things are certain: If homework is given, it should be a tool that’s used to enhance learning. Also, teachers should take into account the financial requirements of assignments, electronic accessibility, and they should be familiar with student needs as well as their other commitments. For example, not all students have equal opportunities to finish their homework, so incomplete work may not be a true reflection of their ability—it may be the result of other issues they face outside of school.

Many of today's teens are taking college-level courses as early as the ninth and tenth grades. With the push of programs such as Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Early College Programs, and Dual Enrollment, today’s teens are carrying academic loads that surpass past generations. The result of this push for rigor can lead to high levels of stress, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, depression , anxiety , and early burnout . Too many teens are already running on empty. With more than half of teens reporting school and homework as a primary source of their stress, it’s evident that academic pressure is becoming a burden.

On the flip side, not all students spend a lot of time doing homework. What takes one student an hour to complete may take another three hours. Too often educators don’t take this into account when assigning homework. According to the University of Phoenix College of Education teacher survey, high school students can get assigned up to 17.5 hours of homework each week. To top it off, a Today article reported that teachers often underestimate the amount of homework they assign by as much as 50%. Now that’s a huge miscalculation, and our nation's youth have to suffer the consequences of those errors.

There are definitely pros and cons to doing homework. I think the bigger question that educators need to address is, “what’s the purpose of the assignment?” Is it merely a way to show parents and administration what's going on in the class? Is it a means to help keep students' grades afloat by giving a grade for completion or is the assignment being graded for accuracy? Does the assignment enhance and supplement the learning experience? Furthermore, is it meaningful or busywork?

The homework debate will likely continue until we take a good, hard look at our current policies and practices. What side of the line do you stand on when it comes to homework? Perhaps you’re somewhere in the middle?

How to Study for a Test: 17 Expert Tips

Do you have a big exam coming up, but you're not sure how to prepare for it? Are you looking to improve your grades or keep them strong but don't know the best way to do this? We're here to help! In this guide, we've compiled the 17 best tips for how to study for a test. No matter what grade you're in or what subject you're studying, these tips will give you ways to study faster and more effectively. If you're tired of studying for hours only to forget everything when it comes time to take a test, follow these tips so you can be well prepared for any exam you take.

How to Study for a Test: General Tips

The four tips below are useful for any test or class you're preparing for. Learn the best way to study for a test from these tips and be prepared for any future exams you take.

#1: Stick to a Study Schedule

If you're having trouble studying regularly, creating a study schedule can be a huge help. Doing something regularly helps your mind get used to it. If you set aside a time to regularly study and stick to it, it'll eventually become a habit that's (usually) easy to stick to. Getting into a fixed habit of studying will help you improve your concentration and mental stamina over time. And, just like any other training, your ability to study will improve with time and effort.

Take an honest look at your schedule (this includes schoolwork, extracurriculars, work, etc.) and decide how often you can study without making your schedule too packed. Aim for at least an hour twice a week. Next, decide when you want to study, such as Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from 7-8pm, and stick to your schedule . In the beginning, you may need to tweak your schedule, but you'll eventually find the study rhythm that works best for you. The important thing is that you commit to it and study during the same times each week as often as possible.

#2: Start Studying Early and Study for Shorter Periods

Some people can cram for several hours the night before the test and still get a good grade. However, this is rarer than you may hope. Most people need to see information several times, over a period of time, for them to really commit it to memory. This means that, instead of doing a single long study session, break your studying into smaller sessions over a longer period of time. Five one-hour study sessions over a week will be less stressful and more effective than a single five-hour cram session. It may take a bit of time for you to learn how long and how often you need to study for a class, but once you do you'll be able to remember the information you need and reduce some of the stress that comes from schoolwork, tests, and studying.

#3: Remove Distractions

When you're studying, especially if it's for a subject you don't enjoy, it can be extremely tempting to take "quick breaks" from your work. There are untold distractions all around us that try to lure our concentration away from the task at hand. However, giving in to temptation can be an awful time suck. A quick glance at your phone can easily turn into an hour of wasting time on the internet, and that won't help you get the score you're looking for. In order to avoid distractions, remove distractions completely from your study space.

Eat a meal or a snack before you begin studying so you're not tempted to rummage through the fridge as a distraction. Silence your phone and keep it in an entirely different room. If you're studying on a computer, turn your WIFI off if it's not essential to have. Make a firm rule that you can't get up to check on whatever has you distracted until your allotted study time is up.

#4: Reward Yourself When You Hit a Milestone

To make studying a little more fun, give yourself a small reward whenever you hit a study milestone. For example, you might get to eat a piece of candy for every 25 flashcards you test yourself on, or get to spend 10 minutes on your phone for every hour you spend studying. You can also give yourself larger rewards for longer-term goals, such as going out to ice cream after a week of good study habits. Studying effectively isn't always easy, and by giving yourself rewards, you'll keep yourself motivated.

Tips for Learning and Remembering Information

While the default method of studying is reading through class notes, this is actually one of the least effective ways of learning and remembering information. In this section we cover four much more useful methods. You'll notice they all involve active learning, where you're actively reworking the material, rather than just passively reading through notes. Active studying has been shown to be a much more effective way to understand and retain information, and it's what we recommend for any test you're preparing for.

#5: Rewrite the Material in Your Own Words

It can be easy to get lost in a textbook and look back over a page, only to realize you don't remember anything about what you just read. Fortunately, there's a way to avoid this.

For any class that requires lots of reading, be sure to stop periodically as you read. Pause at the end of a paragraph/page/chapter (how much you can read at once and still remember clearly will likely depend on the material you're reading) and—without looking!—think about what the text just stated. Re-summarize it in your own words, and write down bullet points if that helps. Now, glance back over the material and make sure you summarized the information accurately and included all the important details. Take note of whatever you missed, then pick up your reading where you left off.

Whether you choose to summarize the text aloud or write down notes, re-wording the text is a very effective study tool. By rephrasing the text in your own words, you're ensuring you're actually remembering the information and absorbing its meaning, rather than just moving your eyes across a page without taking in what you're reading.

#6: Make Flashcards

Flashcards are a popular study tool for good reason! They're easy to make, easy to carry around, easy to pull out for a quick study session, and they're a more effective way of studying than just reading through pages of notes. Making your own flashcards is especially effective because you'll remember more information just through the act of writing it down on the cards. For any subjects in which you must remember connections between terms and information, such as formulas, vocabulary, equations, or historical dates, flashcards are the way to go. We recommend using the Waterfall Method when you study with flashcards since it's the fastest way to learn all the material on the cards.

#7: Teach the Material to Someone Else

Teaching someone else is a great way to organize the information you've been studying and check your grasp of it. It also often shows you that you know more of the material than you think! Find a study-buddy, or a friend/relative/pet or even just a figurine or stuffed animal and explain the material to them as if they're hearing about it for the first time. Whether the person you're teaching is real or not, teaching material aloud requires you to re-frame the information in new ways and think more carefully about how all the elements fit together. The act of running through the material in this new way also helps you more easily lock it in your mind.

#8: Make Your Own Study Guides

Even if your teacher provides you with study guides, we highly recommend making your own study materials. Just making the materials will help the information sink into your mind, and when you make your own study guides, you can customize them to the way you learn best, whether that's flashcards, images, charts etc. For example, if you're studying for a biology test, you can draw your own cell and label the components, make a Krebs cycle diagram, map out a food chain, etc. If you're a visual learner (or just enjoy adding images to your study materials), include pictures and diagrams.

Sometimes making your own charts and diagrams will mean recreating the ones in your textbook from memory, and sometimes it will mean putting different pieces of information together yourself. Whatever the diagram type and whatever the class, writing your information down and making pictures out of it will be a great way to help you remember the material.

How to Study for a History Test

History tests are notorious for the amount of facts and dates you need to know. Make it easier to retain the information by using these two tips.

#9: Know Causes and Effects

It's easy and tempting to simply review long lists of dates of important events, but this likely won't be enough for you to do well on a history test, especially if it has any writing involved. Instead of only learning the important dates of, say, WWI, focus on learning the factors that led to the war and what its lasting impacts on the world were. By understanding the cause and effects of major events, you'll be able to link them to the larger themes you're learning in history class. Also, having more context about an event can often make it easier to remember little details and dates that go along with it.

#10: Make Your Own Timelines

Sometimes you need to know a lot of dates for a history test. In these cases, don't think passively reading your notes is enough. Unless you have an amazing memory, it'll take you a long time for all those dates to sink into your head if you only read through a list of them. Instead, make your own timeline.

Make your first timeline very neat, with all the information you need to know organized in a way that makes sense to you (this will typically be chronologically, but you may also choose to organize it by theme). Make this timeline as clear and helpful as you can, using different colors, highlighting important information, drawing arrows to connecting information, etc. Then, after you've studied enough to feel you have a solid grasp of the dates, rewrite your timeline from memory. This one doesn't have to be neat and organized, but include as much information as you remember. Continue this pattern of studying and writing timelines from memory until you have all the information memorized.

How to Study for a Math Test

Math tests can be particularly intimating to many students, but if you're well-prepared for them, they're often straightforward.

#11: Redo Homework Problems

More than most tests, math tests usually are quite similar to the homework problems you've been doing. This means your homework contains dozens of practice problems you can work through. Try to review practice problems from every topic you'll be tested on, and focus especially on problems that you struggled with. Remember, don't just review how you solved the problem the first time. Instead, rewrite the problem, hide your notes, and solve it from scratch. Check your answer when you're finished. That'll ensure you're committing the information to memory and actually have a solid grasp of the concepts.

#12: Make a Formula Sheet

You're likely using a lot of formulas in your math class, and it can be hard remembering what they are and when to use them. Throughout the year, as you learn a new important formula, add it to a formula sheet you've created. For each formula, write out the formula, include any notes about when to use it, and include a sample problem that uses the formula. When your next math test rolls around, you'll have a useful guide to the key information you've been learning.

How to Study for an English Test

Whether your English test involves writing or not, here are two tips to follow as you prepare for it.

#13: Take Notes as You Read

When you're assigned reading for English class, it can be tempting to get through the material as quickly as possible and then move on to something else. However, this is not a good way to retain information, and come test day, you may be struggling to remember a lot of what you read. Highlighting important passages is also too passive a way to study. The way to really retain the information you read is to take notes. This takes more time and effort, but it'll help you commit the information to memory. Plus, when it comes time to study, you'll have a handy study guide ready and won't have to frantically flip through the book to try to remember what you read. The more effort you put into your notes, the more helpful they'll be. Consider organizing them by theme, character, or however else makes sense to you.

#14: Create Sample Essay Outlines

If the test you're taking requires you to write an essay, one of the best ways to be prepared is to develop essay outlines as you study. First, think about potential essay prompts your teacher might choose you to write about. Consider major themes, characters, plots, literary comparisons, etc., you discussed in class, and write down potential essay prompts. Just doing this will get you thinking critically about the material and help you be more prepared for the test.

Next, write outlines for the prompts you came up with (or, if you came up with a lot of prompts, choose the most likely to outline). These outlines don't need to contain much information, just your thesis and a few key points for each body paragraph. Even if your teacher chooses a different prompt than what you came up with, just thinking about what to write about and how you'll organize your thoughts will help you be more prepared for the test.

What to Do the Night Before the Test

Unfortunately, the night before a test is when many students make study choices that actually hurt their chances of getting a good grade. These three tips will help you do some final review in a way that helps you be at the top of your game the next day.

#15: Get Enough Sleep

One of the absolute best ways to prepare for a test-any test-is to be well-rested when you sit down to take it. Staying up all night cramming information isn't an effective way of studying, and being tired the next day can seriously impact your test-taking skills. Aim to get a solid eight hours of sleep the night before the test so that you can wake up refreshed and at the top of your test-taking game.

#16: Review Major Concepts

It can be tempting to try to go through all your notes the night before a test to review as much information as possible, but this will likely only leave you stressed to and overwhelmed by the information you're trying to remember. If you've been regularly reviewing information throughout the class, you shouldn't need much more than a quick review of major ideas, and perhaps a few smaller details you have difficulty remembering. Even if you've gotten behind on studying and are trying to review a lot of information, resist the information to cram and focus on only a few major topics. By keeping your final night review manageable, you have a better chance of committing that information to memory, and you'll avoid lack of sleep from late night cramming.

#17: Study Right Before You Go to Sleep

Studies have shown that if you review material right before you go to sleep, you have better memory recall the next day. (This is also true if you study the information right when you wake up.) This doesn't mean you should cram all night long (remember tip #15), but if there are a few key pieces of information you especially want to review or are having trouble committing to memory, review them right before you go to bed. Sweet dreams!

Summary: The Best Way to Study for a Test

If you're not sure how to study for a test effectively, you might end up wasting hours of time only to find that you've barely learned anything at all. Overall, the best way to study for a test, whether you want to know how to study for a math test or how to study for a history test, is to study regularly and practice active learning. Cramming information and trying to remember things just by looking over notes will rarely get you the score you want. Even though the tips we suggest do take time and effort on your part, they'll be worth it when you get the score you're working towards.

Homework in college will likely look, feel, and be used differently than the homework you were assigned in high school, and it's possible there won't be any homework assigned at all. If this is the case, make it a point to give yourself some homework (finding practice problems, doing outside readings, making mind-maps about all that you've learned, etc.). And, If you are assigned homework, do your best to take full advantage of it.

Homework is your opportunity to practice what you've learned in class, or to test your learning and find gaps where you need to engage in additional research or testing or practice. Homework is there to help you learn the content fully. It's your chance to practice what you know so you’re fully prepared to perform on your test. If you're working to identify/solve/explain/connect as a part of your daily learning practice, then you're working to remember, and when you get into your tests you'll draw on your memories as you retrieve your answers.

Common types of homework might be practice problems, practice questions, assigned reading, assigned videos, quizzes covering what you've read or viewed, discussion board posts, interviews/experiences, self-reflections, etc.

The goal of these activities is to give you hands-on practice with the concepts and problems, and to get you thinking about what you know and/or don't know, as well as why something is used or solved in the way that it is. Have you already read about the memory process ? If not, give it a look, and if you have then you'll remember that engaging in repetition and elaboration are aspects of the learning and memory process that will help you to remember the material for the long-term. Simultaneously, this practice will show you what you know well and what you need to spend more time learning. All of these skills play a part in self-monitoring, which is what helps to give you an accurate picture of how you’ll do on your tests.

To make the most of your homework practice, and to be sure the homework is preparing you for the test, consider the following tips so you can be most effective in your practice approach:

  • Don’t take shortcuts . Looking up answers immediately or simply guessing until you get an answer right doesn’t actually teach you the material. If you notice a pattern but aren't entirely sure why it's there, find out. If you feel like you just don't know it, ask yourself to sit with the problem just a little bit longer to see what you might be able to pull from your memory. Actively engaging with information in order to gain comprehension is what makes homework most effective, and the work to find the answer without looking it up is one of the ways you can be actively engaged.
  • See problem-sets as opportunities to test yourself . Self-testing and practice testing are some of the most effective ways to study, learn, and retain information (Dunlosky, 2013). You're asking your brain to actively engage again. To be even more effective, think about what types of problems and ideas are being presented. Don't try to memorize individual problems or questions; do all you can to be able to identify the problem type or the concept, and to know what you would apply to achieve a solution/answer. 
  • Practice identifying the concepts you’ll be tested on . Every homework problem/question is an example of a concept the instructor wants to make sure you know — it's chosen intentionally. So try to think about why: what does your professor want you to demonstrate that you know? What does your instructor want to see you explain or make connections to? Approaching your preparation like this can help you make sense of how problems are designed and also get you thinking about how they relate to the larger concepts in the course.
  • Mix up problems from different chapters and parts of the term . This mixing increases retention and retrieval (Roediger, 2013), helps keep you from falling into a familiarity trap, and let's you start thinking about how all of the content you've been learning is connected and informs itself.
  • Work toward comprehension .  If you’re struggling to understand how to do a problem or answer a question, revisit the text/your notes and examine the information again. If it still doesn’t make sense, ask a peer, friend, or your instructor for guidance. Don't be afraid to keep asking until you understand, and if you need to ask again, that's fine.
  • If there aren’t enough practice problems or questions, make up your own . One of the best ways to prepare for tests is to try to anticipate possible problems or questions and then answer them.
  • Schedule regular blocks of time throughout the week to work on your homework . As in, don't wait to do it all at once on a single huge chunk of time; rather, distribute it over the course of several days. Not only is this a proven strategy for effective learning (it's distributing your practice, and distributed practice has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to prepare for exams) (Dunlosky, 2013)), it's also a way to reduce your stress level because you'll have the time to complete the work at a manageable pace, to take breaks as you need them to refresh, to walk away from problems when it feels like you just can't solve them, and to return ready to to think and focus on the work.
  • Overlearn the material . Overlearning means you know the information and how to do a problem so thoroughly that you can retrieve it quickly even during a stressful exam. To achieve this, continue to engage in practice problems or testing yourself beyond getting the answer right just once. Test yourself and practice so you can get it right every time.

Designing Effective Homework

Best practices for creating homework that raises student achievement

Homework. It can be challenging…and not just for students. For teachers, designing homework can be a daunting task with lots of unanswered questions: How much should I assign? What type of content should I cover? Why aren’t students doing the work I assign? Homework can be a powerful opportunity to reinforce the Shifts in your instruction and promote standards-aligned learning, but how do we avoid the pitfalls that make key learning opportunities sources of stress and antipathy?

The nonprofit Instruction Partners recently set out to answer some of these questions, looking at what research says about what works when it comes to homework. You can view their original presentation here , but I’ve summarized some of the key findings you can put to use with your students immediately.

Does homework help?

Consistent homework completion has been shown to increase student achievement rates—but frequency matters. Students who are given homework regularly show greater gains than those who only receive homework sporadically. Researchers hypothesize that this is due to improved study skills and routines practiced through homework that allow students to perform better academically.

Average gains on unit tests for students who completed homework were six percentile points in grades 4–6, 12 percentile points in grades 7–9, and an impressive 24 percentile points in grades 10–12; so yes, homework (done well) does work. [i]

What should homework cover?

While there is little research about exactly what types of homework content lead to the biggest achievement gains, there are some general rules of thumb about how homework should change gradually over time.

In grades 1–5, homework should:

  • Reinforce and allow students to practice skills learned in the classroom
  • Help students develop good study habits and routines
  • Foster positive feelings about school

In grades 6–12, homework should:

  • Prepare students for engagement and discussion during the next lesson
  • Allow students to apply their skills in new and more challenging ways

The most often-heard criticism of homework assignments is that they simply take too long. So how much homework should you assign in order to see results for students? Not surprisingly, it varies by grade. Assign 10-20 minutes of homework per night total, starting in first grade, and then add 10 minutes for each additional grade. [ii] Doing more can result in student stress, frustration, and disengagement, particularly in the early grades.

Why are some students not doing the homework?

There are any number of reasons why students may not complete homework, from lack of motivation to lack of content knowledge, but one issue to watch out for as a teacher is the impact of economic disparities on the ability to complete homework.

Multiple studies [iii] have shown that low-income students complete homework less often than students who come from wealthier families. This can lead to increased achievement gaps between students. Students from low-income families may face additional challenges when it comes to completing homework such as lack of access to the internet, lack of access to outside tutors or assistance, and additional jobs or family responsibilities.

While you can’t erase these challenges for your students, you can design homework that takes those issues into account by creating homework that can be done offline, independently, and in a reasonable timeframe. With those design principles in mind, you increase the opportunity for all your students to complete and benefit from the homework you assign.

The Big Picture

Perhaps most importantly, students benefit from receiving feedback from you, their teacher, on their assignments. Praise or rewards simply for homework completion have little effect on student achievement, but feedback that helps them improve or reinforces strong performance does. Consider keeping this mini-table handy as you design homework:

The act of assigning homework doesn’t automatically raise student achievement, so be a critical consumer of the homework products that come as part of your curriculum. If they assign too much (or too little!) work or reflect some of these common pitfalls, take action to make assignments that better serve your students.

Help Your Child Prepare for Standardized Tests

Find out how to help your young learner get ready for annual tests, plus get insight into how to interpret your child's results..

Standardized tests play a major role in today's schooling. Your child may take one or more standardized tests each year, and her teacher may devote a significant amount of class time to preparation exercises. Several states administer "high stakes" tests, which can have a significant impact on school assessment and funding, determine your child's class placement, or even prevent grade promotion. No matter how you feel about this controversial assessment tool, it's important that your child do her best.

What Do Standardized Tests Measure? 

The tests provide a yardstick for educators to evaluate the performance of students and schools, measuring it against state and national standards. They generally fall into one of two categories: Achievement tests measure subject-specific knowledge, while Aptitude tests predict your child's ability to learn by measuring his mastery of school-success skills like reasoning or problem-solving. These tests can provide you and your child's teacher with insight into his progress, helping you identify areas for improvement. Standardized assessments also help schools and districts decide where they need to focus more attention.

Are There Limitations to These Exams? 

While testing companies strive to create effective evaluation tools, several factors can affect your child's performance. The conditions in the testing room, how well the school curriculum fits the material, whether she had a good night's sleep, and her test-taking ability can all affect her score. As a result, you may see inconsistencies between her grades and test scores. It's best not to place too much emphasis on a single test result.

How Can You Help Your Child Prepare for Standardized Tests? 

Teachers tell us that successful test-takers tend to be students with good attendance, homework, and study habits; therefore, your daily assistance with homework and attitude toward school have the biggest impact on your child's performance. However, there are key ways you can develop his test-taking ability.

  • Optimize brain power. Teachers say the students who struggle the most on testing days are the ones who didn't have  enough sleep  or a  good breakfast  the day of the test. Also, students who are physically or mentally unprepared often encounter problems. Make sure she has every tool she needs — pencils, an eraser, paper, a calculator, etc. laid out the night before, as well as any preliminary paperwork filled out, if possible. If she isn't feeling well on the test day, it's better to keep her home and let her make up the test later rather than risk poor performance. 
  • Encourage good study habits and challenge critical-thinking skills. Reviewing  test-taking strategies  is important, but monitoring overall academic progress and staying in good communication with the teacher will help you ward off potential problems. Good reading skills factor heavily in a timed test, so encourage reading (consider magazines, newspapers, or even comic books if he shies away from books) as much as possible. Testing also measures  critical-thinking  ability, so ask him to discuss ideas or voice his opinion often to stimulate these thought processes.   
  • What is the name of the test, and what will it measure? 
  • What's the format? (multiple choice, essay, short answer, etc.) 
  • How will the class prepare in school? 
  • How is it scored? Will students be penalized for incorrect answers or should they guess randomly when stumped on a question? 
  • When will you receive the results? 
  • What are the test's implications? Will it affect your child, school, or both? 
  • Are there any specific ways you can help your child prepare?
  • Look at your child's past performance. If she scored low in a particular area, you may want to provide her with exercises that reinforce that subject. Aim for activities that simulate the testing experience, such as multiple choice geometry questions or vocabulary practice that asks her to identify antonyms or synonyms. Workbooks geared towards standardized test preparation often provide these kind of exercises. Avoid drilling her in areas where she excels; you run the risk of boring her and her losing patience with testing. 
  • Provide practice opportunities. You may be able to request sample or practice tests from your child's school or find them at the library. Be sure to time any practice tests (assuming the standardized test will be timed) so he's not surprised by time constraints on test day. Start practicing several weeks before the date and keep study sessions short. Setting small goals, such as learning five new words each session, will help him measure his progress and boost his confidence. Make sure he takes the night before the test off — cramming can increase his stress level. 
  • Relax and remain positive. The best test-takers are confident, committed, and at ease. Even if you are nervous about her performance, be wary of transferring that concern to your child. You never know, some kids actually enjoy tests! If she is likely to get nervous, practice a few relaxation techniques, such as counting from one to ten or taking deep breaths, which can help her relieve tension during the test.

How to Interpret Your Child's Results

Because assessment varies from test to test, it would be impossible to include all the terms you may encounter here. However, the scores should be accompanied by information to help you interpret them. Don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher if you have questions or need help understanding the results. You could also talk to the PTA or school administrator about inviting a testing expert to host an information session for parents.

What If You Have Concerns Over the Test or Testing Situation?

First, you should discuss the problem with your child's teacher and/or school administrator. If you're not satisfied with the outcome, there are a few organizations that monitor testing. Your local  PTA  is a great place to start.

These two questions have been debated many times, often with little resolution.  Many schools leave it up to individual faculty members, a grade-level team or department to determine its own policy.  I wonder why schools tend to relinquish the responsibility for setting a homework policy that is based on guidelines consistent with what research says about student learning.  As a former science teacher, department chair, director of studies, and principal, I think schools angst over setting policies that impact the day-to-day teaching practice of a classroom teacher.  Unlike some other professions, we give teachers a fair amount of autonomy, especially in independent schools.

I will not argue in this post that we should remove autonomy completely.  A great deal of creative teaching emerges when schools trust teachers and give them the autonomy to experiment with different methods.  However, I will argue that setting homework guidelines is an important responsibility that schools should not ignore because it assures that someone will use the research as a filter to guide how the school manages homework.  I believe a reasonable and fair set of homework policies can positively impact a student’s school experience.

Here are some ways in which a school with no policies in place impact students:

  • one teacher at the same grade level or in the same course grades homework another teacher does not
  • one teacher at the same grade level or in the same course reviews homework another teacher does not
  • one teacher at the same grade level or in the same course uses homework as a formative process while another teacher does not
  • one teacher at the same grade level or in the same course has students correct and redo homework as a learning exercise while another teacher does not

These are only four scenarios that could lead to a learning environment for students where the playing field is not level.  Students want to believe that regardless of which teachers’ classroom they are in their experience and chance for success will rest solely on their performance not on whether teachers have different policies for how to manage homework.

In her book, Rethinking Homework: Best Practices That Support Diverse Needs
 , Cathy Vatterot discusses the homework dilemma and lays out an argument for constructing a program that meets the diverse needs of students.  In her mind, the “best homework” has five attributes:

homework should have a specific academic purpose, such as practice, checking for understanding, or applying knowledge or skills. homework should be used to efficiently demonstrate student learning. homework should promote student owner ship of learning by offering choices and being personally relevant. homework should be designed to instill a sense of competence in the student so he or she can succeed. homework should be a worthy and pleasing experience and not merely a routine or drill to be completed

In addition to her five attributes, I would propose the following set of parameters that a good homework policy should have:

  • homework should be given only if the teacher is prepared to give students feedback on their performance.
  • homework should be formatively assessed which means that it should: (1) inform the teacher as to whether his or her teaching has been effective; and (2) inform the student if he or she has learned the material.
  • homework should be a component of the student’s overall achievement (grade) because if it is meaningful and the student is engaged with it and if it is formatively assessed then it is a good indicator of student performance.
  • homework should have two purposes; (1) assessing student understanding (Vatterot’s #1 above); and (2) preparing the student for future learning.  It should propel the student along the learning curve the teacher intends through the learning experience.

MET Life Foundation conducted one of the most exhaustive surveys,  The MetLife Survey of the American Teacher: The Homework Experience , of its kind on homework practices and attitudes in the US.  It surveyed 1,200 K-12 public school teachers, 500 parents, and 2,000 students in 2007.  Here is a snapshot of what they uncovered in their survey.

Homework occupies an intersection between school, home and the community, and, as such, can serve as a channel of communication between the school and parent, as well as the parent and child. Over 80% of parents believe that their child’s teachers assign the right amount of – or even too little – homework 75% of students report that they have enough time to do their assignments. 90% of parents report that helping their child with homework provides an opportunity for them to talk and spend time together. The majority of parents do not see homework as getting in the way of family time or as a major source of stress and disagreement in their family. The 25% of students who report that they do not have enough time have higher rates of risk factors related to student achievement and other areas. Those who lack enough time for their homework are more likely to get low grades and are less likely to plan to go to college. Frequent failure to complete homework may be an early signal of student disengagement that can lead to school-related problems. The majority of parents, students, and teachers believe in the value of homework. They think homework is important and helps students learn more in school. Parents who do not believe homework is important appear to be more alienated and less connected to their child’s school. Overall, most parents (and teachers) report that the quality of homework assigned by their school is less than excellent. 33% of parents rate the quality of homework assignments as fair or poor, and 40% believe that a great deal or some homework is busywork and not related to what students are learning in school. 50% of parents have a rule for their child that homework should be completed in a quiet place. Yet 75% of students agree that it is important to have a quiet place to do homework, this is not necessarily a goal that they put into practice. Among secondary school students, 90% are usually doing other activities, or “multi-tasking”, while doing their homework, including 70% who listen to music and 51% who watch TV. 50% of teachers frequently use homework to help students practice skills, prepare for tests, develop good work habits, develop their critical thinking skills, and motivate them to learn. Teachers also use homework as part of assessment and, less frequently, because they did not have enough time during class to cover all of the material; these usages are more common among secondary school teachers than elementary school teachers. Highly experienced teachers (21+ years of experience) are more likely than new teachers (5 years or less experience) to believe that homework is important: that it helps students learn more in school or that it helps students reach their goals for after high school. New teachers are less likely than highly experienced teachers to provide students with feedback on homework or to review completed assignments during class discussions. New teachers feel less prepared to create engaging homework assignments.

There are many implications from the MET Life survey.  I only refer to a small window of what was learned through the data analysis.  The outcomes are clear that teachers, parents, and students value homework.  That students’ attitudes towards homework and success at completing homework impact their overall success in school.  Finally, that many teachers, parents, and students believe that most homework is busy work that is not an interesting and engaging part of the learning experience.

We have our work cut out for us in schools to get a handle on the homework issue.  The only way we will succeed in this adventure is if the SCHOOL is willing to take on the conversation with its faculty and create a set of homework policies that ensure homework is an effective and meaningful part of a student’s learning experience, one that counts towards their overall achievement.

When you last headed a division or entire school, what was your homework policy? Was math the same as English? Was 6th grade the same as 10th grade? Were other assessment policies similarly aligned among classes, or just HW? I am curious because I have so many questions about HW.

When I was the Division Director at North Shore Country Day School, it was very hard in the high school to get faculty to think seriously about a homework policy. The most I could get them to move on was a test calendar policy that put some balance and restrictions on when teachers or departments could give tests. We had a test calendar that teachers had to use. No more than two tests, papers, or major assignments could be due on any one day. If a teacher was not well organized, they really struggled finding the space to give their major assessments. It put the responsibility on teachers to plan. Homework was harder to get a handle on. Departments did different things although we were able to get most departments to monitor the way homework was graded among their teachers. Remember it was a smaller school.

The most responsive school that I worked at was Marlborough School. As Director of Studies at a 7-12 grade school and the person in charge of the Educational Council, which had authority for setting academic policies, we were able to create school-wide policies in areas such as test make-up, late work, extra-credit, and homework. As a high-end girls school in LA, the faculty, school, and community were quite sensitive to academic stress. Marlborough is a high-achieving school with a great number of type-A folks. Lots of pressure and lots of homework. When I arrived and became the Director of Studies (like Dean of Faculty at WMS), I was able to guide the department chairs to think seriously about policies that helped manage the academic environment and made it reasonable. The only thing on homework that we were unable to really accomplish is the part about relevant and meaningful. That issue was a nut that was hard to crack. Teachers were still wedded to their–20 math problems at the end of the chapter, 30 pages of reading a night, some worksheets in MS earth science, etc.

I think this issue is a tough one as you mention. Hard to get a handle on and move faculty in a positive direction. What would it feel like if faculty had “irrelevant and meaningless” homework in 5-6 subjects on most nights. Of course some of the homework students receive is very meaningful and very necessary. I get concerned that a good deal of it has the effect of turning them off vs. turning them on to school. And when I hear and read that some teachers don’t even give good constructive feedback on the homework they assign or count it in the grade, that makes my skin boil. And these are good teachers, at least I think they are. That concerns me for students.

It might be interesting to do a quick and easy anonymous Survey Monkey piece to canvas the JHS faculty and see what shakes out on these questions. Data helps. However, the MET Life survey is amazingly complete.

Australian students are increasingly taking tests on computers . This includes major tests used to check national progress on literacy and numeracy.

The idea is this prepares students “for the future”, because “technology is everywhere”.

But as our two recent studies suggest, the way students respond to test questions on computers may not be the same as on paper.

This is a particular issue amid concern over the latest round of NAPLAN results , which appear to show too many Australian students are not learning basic skills in English and maths. NAPLAN (for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9) has been fully online for two years.

Our research

In our recent study , we reviewed 43 studies comparing tests on computer and paper. This included research from 18 different countries (including Australia, the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom). Fourteen of these studies focused on school-aged children.

In general, the studies showed for younger school students (who had less computer skills), test scores tended to be higher when done on paper. This effect dropped off as students got older.

We also found when it came to computer testing, scores were worst when students needed to answer complex questions involving multiple steps.

This is due to the demands placed on working memory (the part of your thinking that allows you to hold onto multiple pieces of information at one time – for example, a list of names and coffee orders). When working memory has too many pieces of information at once, we experience “high cognitive load”.

Students may experience this if they are unfamiliar with using a particular computer or particular program, testing platform or browser.

Students may also experience high cognitive load when the questions they answer become more complex. Not only are they working out the answer, but they are working out how to use the computer (or reminding themselves how to use it) at the same time.

Comparing students on paper and on a computer

We also saw this phenomenon at work in our own 2023 study , even when students were well into high school and familiar with the computers used in a science test.

We compared the differences in test scores for computer and paper-based tests with Year 9 students. This study involved 263 science students from two schools in Perth, where students learn using their own devices. Within this sample, there were 14 individual classes taught by seven different teachers.

Students completed one test on their own computer and another (featuring very similar questions) on paper. We categorised the questions in each test as “easy” or “hard”.

When students answered easy questions, they achieved higher scores (by about 7%) on the computer-based assessment. When students completed hard questions, they performed better (by about 12%) on paper-based assessment.

This suggests the computer mode adds to the cognitive load students experience when answering questions. This is a bit like the way a computer’s memory might become overloaded if you run too many programs at the same time, and it slows down and doesn’t perform as well.

This finding is similar to that of a 2018 study that looked at the verbal skills of a group of children aged between four and 11.

What about working memory capacity?

In our study on Year 9 students, we also tested students’ working memory capacity, by giving them increasingly long lists of numbers to remember.

We then controlled for this using statistics. This allowed us to compare the computer and paper test scores while assuming all students had the same working memory capacity. Under these conditions, we found there was no difference in test scores between paper and computer.

This suggests students with lower working memory capacities are most disadvantaged by computer-based tests. People with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are one group that particularly struggle with working memory . We know there will typically be one or two students per classroom who have ADHD.

What can we do differently?

Computers of course have an important role to play in education, and are powerful learning tools. But our research shows taking a test on a computer is not the same as taking the same test on paper. Schools should consider:

giving students extra working time when completing complex tasks or tests on a computer

teaching students word processing skills from an early age to increase their ability to type and navigate computer programs

minimising any digital distractions , either during tests or during class work. This includes pop-ups, multiple tabs and online games.

Additionally, families should think about providing everday opportunities at home for younger children to learn to type (such as emails, messages and shopping lists). This will help to build their skills and confidence with keyboards and computers.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — With a new school year underway, chances are your student is already coming home with homework.

How can parents help their children ace those assignments?

Read on to learn tips from April Ruiz, a longtime educator and founder of Mosaic Masterminds, a West Michigan-based tutoring organization.

Why is homework important?

Ruiz told FOX 17 students must practice what they are learning outside the classroom.

"There are several benefits to doing homework... for one, it allows our scholars to be able to extend their learning from the school day by applying what they've learned. It also gives them an opportunity to cement the lessons that the teachers have facilitated," Ruiz explained. "I'd say homework is exceedingly important for overall success and for confidence building, which, in our experience as teachers, is half the battle."

How can parents set their student(s) up for success?

Ruiz has several tips for parents to consider as students bring home assignments.

*Be proactive in your child's learning

Ruiz said, "It is exceedingly important to know ahead of time what's coming down the pike, so we're not caught off guard."

That leads to her next tip...

*Stay engaged

Ruiz advises staying in contact with your student's teachers.

"If our parents are clued into what's going on in the classroom, that makes such a tighter partnership in the learning process for the scholar, so, therefore, the teachers know what the students know what the parents know," she explained.

*Don't be afraid to check your student's backpack

Ruiz said this is important, no matter the age.

"Our tweens and teens are going through a lot of physiological changes as well. Their brains are a little scattered sometimes, and it's not always high priority for them to keep at the forefront of their mind an assignment or permission slip for a field trip, for example."

*Develop a routine

Ruiz said that may mean scheduling homework time

"I think it's really important to have a routine established, whether it's chores, homework, family, bonding, time, whatever the case may be, we need to schedule homework just like we schedule our extracurricular activities or other fun things we do outside of school," she explained. "They really appreciate structure. They respond well to it in most cases, and also just having that accountability."

*Take advantage of online resources

Ruiz said there's a wealth of information and learning tools online if your student needs some extra help.

"You could literally Google free math resources or free math literacy resources, free science quizzes online. And there's just a world of things out there that our parents and scholars can take advantage of for added practice. There's flash cards, there's physical flashcards, there's digital flashcards, there's games that are out there that can be played," she said.

*Know when to reach out for extra support

Groups like Mosaic Masterminds are available to help with challenges along the way.

Alicia Czarnik-Hagan has enlisted Mosaic Masterminds to help both of her students.

This summer, her 11-year-old son Harrison worked with a "Mastermind" tutor to prepare for the transition from elementary to middle school.

"My biggest thing right now is just helping to keep them organized and on track," Czarnik-Hagan. "I want [homework] to be done. Like, my expectation is that...I feel like it's important to teach kids about responsibility, organizing, planning, prioritizing, and that's really those skills that you get from homework."

Czarnik-Hagan said her biggest test is navigating the parent-child relationship while helping with assignments.

"It is the most challenging when I'm trying to teach something or explain something to my child, because I wasn't in that classroom that day, and so there's a different relationship," she explained. "Just balancing that relationship after school, of still being a parent, but not pushing too hard and like, breaking that the parent relationship and child relationship."

If there's one more tip to pass along, Ruiz said it's to "do something."

"If you don't have a school that is assigning homework regularly, be that gap filler where you can find opportunities for your scholar to extend his or her learning. Make sure that you are on guard and on duty, checking the parent view app, talking with the teacher, email, pop in and find out what's going on... just make sure that you're doing something. Something is better than nothing, and we want our scholars to win."

The LSAT Made Easy – 17 Prep and Study Tips

The Law School Admission Test, commonly known as the LSAT, does not test what you already know. It assesses essential skills needed for success during the first year of law school. Knowing what to expect and familiarizing yourself with the timing and structure of the test will go a long way to prepare you for a qualifying score for entrance into your chosen law school. 

The LSAT is administered in two parts and typically takes three and a half hours to complete, with each section taking 35 minutes .

The first part consists of four sections of multiple-choice style questions:

  • Analytical Reasoning (a.k.a. Logic Games)
  • Logical Reasoning 
  • Unscored Section (can be any one of the question types)

The second part consists of an unscored writing sample. 

The LSAT is a demanding, fast-paced test designed to determine your readiness for law school. Knowing how to study for the LSAT , what to study, and when to study can help you prepare  for success.

Read on to discover 17 LSAT tips for studying and preparing for the test that will open doors to a reputable law school and a legal career.

General Study Tips and Methods

Tip #1 – take care of yourself.

At the top of the list is YOU . Don’t cope with stress and let off steam by celebrating in unhealthy ways. Instead, prioritize yourself and get plenty of rest and downtime to recharge your battery between focused study times.

Tip #2 – Create a Schedule That Is Both Consistent and Realistic  

Block your calendar, set aside time for study just as you would for any other work or personal task, and get your brain in the same mindset every time. Create a study schedule that you can stick to over three to four months and aim for 120 hours of dedicated LSAT study at least one to two hours a day, four to five days a week. Be sure to schedule breaks and ask for help when you need it.

Tip #3 – Form a Study Group

On test day, you’ll have only yourself to rely on. However, while preparing, many students find it helpful to study in groups. One of the best reasons to do so is that explaining concepts and questions to others is a great way to gauge how well you actually understand them.

Study groups can help keep you on track, especially if you’re a procrastinator. As a group, you can set goals in advance, such as completing a specific practice test by the day your group meets.

Tip within a tip: Studying with like-minded people in your profession is a valuable way to network and connect with others.

General LSAT Tips

Tip #4 – practice the blind review lsat method.

The blind review is a practical way to study for the LSAT so that you learn from both your correct and incorrect answers. Instead of checking your answers right after a timed LSAT prep , review them before looking at the correct answers. Why? Because the correct answer isn’t the most important thing here. Your reasoning process behind it is equally important so that on test day, you are confident in your ability to choose the correct answer and not just rely on your gut.

Tip within a tip: For your first few test preps, try taking them without being timed so you can focus on your understanding of the concepts, not the time constraint. If you have unlimited time, you can determine whether or not your errors are attributable to time or to a lack of understanding.

Tip #5 – Take an LSAT Prep Course

Some students study by referencing books, previous exams, internet resources and forums, while others seek professional test preparation resources to help them achieve higher scores. A good prep course from a reputable prep test company can mean the difference between getting an acceptable score versus an exceptional score and ultimately getting into the law school of your choice.

Tip #6 – Use Practice Questions to Strengthen Skills

Practice exams are worthwhile to prepare for test-taking and understanding your LSAT score, but practice questions help strengthen your skills for understanding individual test sections. It’s crucial to review and learn from each question and to understand the reasoning behind why a question was correct or incorrect. Otherwise, your score may not improve over time.

Tip #7 – Take the Test When You Are Ready, Not When You Sign Up 

Timing is everything. It’s better to study, prepare, and practice before you sign up for the LSAT. It puts too much pressure on you if you sign up for the test and then have to cram with a looming deadline.

Tip #8 – Be Prepared for Test Day 

The day before the test, rest your brain. Do NOT review any material. Instead, visit with friends, watch a movie or get physically active. Prepare everything you’ll need in a clear, one-gallon plastic bag. For full details on what is permitted at test centers and remotely, check the LSAC policies .

  • One or more writing utensils
  • Large pink eraser
  • Highlighter
  • Analog watch (no digital watches allowed)
  • Healthy snacks and a drink (plastic container or juice box, 20 oz. max)
  • Identification (government-issued ID)
  • Test ticket

If taking the LSAT at a test center, you can put your keys and wallet in the bag when you arrive. On the test day, arrive early and leave your cell phone in the car

Tip within a tip: Do not talk to others during the break or after. The LSAT is a complex and demanding test that needs your full attention and concentration for nearly four hours, so you must be focused and stay on your game.

Tip #9 – Allocate Your Time Based on Section Complexity and Your Strengths

Don’t focus on time. Focus on getting the answers right. Remember the winning mantra: 2 out of 3 for a 150, or 3 out of 4 for a 160. No law school requires a perfect score of 180, so figure out where you’re strong and pick your problems. Points are points—you can be weaker in some areas and still do fine if you are strong in others. If you get stuck or flustered, skip it and move on. 

Tip within a tip: If you have time, go back and fill in all answers—there is no penalty for wrong answers.

LSAT Logical Reasoning Tips

There are two separate Logical Reasoning sections, each consisting of a few dozen short prompts or arguments, followed by one or two questions about what you read. You get approximately two minutes per item, and they are arranged from easiest to hardest. This section tests your ability to analyze arguments, determine their strengths and weaknesses, and draw conclusions. Practice is essential here because logical reasoning skills can be learned.

Tip #10 – Don’t Consider Why Wrong Answers Are Wrong

Unlike classroom study, don’t waste time second-guessing or trying to articulate reasoning during the LSAT. Do not attack the truth of your premise or conclusion. This is the LSAT bubble—outside knowledge can hurt you. Look for the argument’s structural validity and don’t investigate why wrong answers are wrong.

Tip #11 –  Break Down Each Portion of the Statement

For every Logical Reasoning statement, read the question stem first, then find your conclusion and box indicator words. Remember, the conclusion will be disguised. The answer will not be verbatim but may be very close.

LSAT Analytical Reasoning Tips

The Analytical Reasoning section is also known as the "Logic Games" category. It features four games that each have several multiple-choice questions. Some games require matching and some sequencing. Logic games can seem very unfamiliar and challenging at first, but mastering them can be an excellent way to boost your score once you understand the mechanics needed to solve them. This section tests your skills in analyzing information and drawing conclusions, problem-solving capacity and competence to apply logic in complex situations.

Tip #12 - Pick and Choose Your Games

As you look through and choose the games, remember that the first ones are NOT the easiest. Do not confuse easy and difficult with simple and complex. Often (not always), games with easy setups have complex and time-consuming questions. Games that are difficult to set up may nearly give you the answers.

Tip within a tip: Use scrap paper and a highlighter to mark fixed items from the stimulus so you don’t lose track when you try possible configurations or plug in conditional stems from items.

Tip #13 – Take Time to Set Up Your Games 

You’re allowed roughly seven to eight minutes per game set. Time flies fast in this section, so read carefully and make deductions. Take time to set up your games and see the implications of rule interaction. You can pass two or three games and still do just fine on the test, so don’t worry if you don’t finish the fourth game

LSAT Reading Comprehension Tips

The Reading Comprehension section contains four articles on varying subjects, including arts and humanities, science, history or law. Each article is followed by five to eight questions. This test is designed to assess your ability to read carefully and thoroughly, identify concepts, make reasonable assumptions and determine relationships within the context of the article.

Tip #14 – Practice Reading and Develop Background Knowledge

It sounds simple, but the more you read, the better reader you become. As in the other sections, Reading Comprehension doesn’t involve memorizing facts or definitions. This category tests your ability to quickly synthesize written material, even if you’re unfamiliar with the topic. 

Multiple studies, including the famous baseball experiment , have shown that reading comprehension scores are influenced by the amount of background knowledge the test taker has on the subject. In other words, the more you read, the more comprehensive your base of knowledge and the more quickly you’ll understand the subject matter. 

Tip within a tip: Bolster your knowledge by reading as much variety as possible so you won’t waste time trying to familiarize yourself with the language and subject matter. In this way, you can use the time to get right to the key arguments of the passage.

Tip #15 – Go Global First

Within each passage, do the global items first, then go back and do local items, as these are less time-consuming than global items and usually do not require that you read the whole passage. 

When reviewing the passages, note the role of each paragraph in shorthand and highlight critical concepts and directional words. Mark whether they are descriptive or persuasive and look for purpose/verbs accordingly.

LSAT Writing Tips

The persuasive writing portion of the LSAT is essential to law school success because it demonstrates your ability to organize evidence into a position and argue logically. The online proctored test is taken on your own time and is administered separately from the LSAT. While not scored, most law schools require the writing sample as an integral part of their admission decision, so it must be completed for y our LSAT score to be released. 

Tip #16 – Plan, Write and Review

The best way to prepare for the LSAT writing portion is to practice and answer sample prompts under the 35-minute time constraint. Read and consider the facts, outline two to four paragraphs, write your argument and review the essay for errors. Practice this over and over until you’re comfortable with the process

Tip #17 – Focus on the Facts, Not the Answer

Even if you’re well-versed in the topic, only use the information in the prompt to make an argument. Do not include outside information that you believe will strengthen your position. This persuasive writing exam tests your analysis and reasoning skills with only the information given

Tip within a tip: Remember, these prompts have no right or wrong answer. Either side can be argued, so choose whichever side you feel you can create the most persuasive argument

GREAT LEARNING TOOL MADE BY A GENIUS DUDE!!! Quizard reads your question and like searches the web for similar information to come up with an answer. Quizard provides a paragraph explanation along with the short answer. READ THOROUGHLY bc it is a computer and sometimes the wording makes it come up with “the wrong (short) answer” even though throughout the (longer paragraph) explanation you can figure out the true answer that Quizard happened to word incorrectly or chose a similar but wrong multiple choice option for. If you’re not trying using it for just the short answer not bothering to read and check the answer and dont read the paragraph then ya.. some of your answers are gonna be wrong. But if it doesn’t give you the right answer it’ll at least provide some explanation to put you on the right path.

DO NOT GET THIS APP!

So, I’m in 4th grade, 4TH GRADE! & IT COULDN’T HELP ME CORRECTLY! So, you know in elementary school papers, & the printer will add these little pictures to the side, well, when i took a picture of this paper, quizard told me that “ I’m sorry, there’s a object in this paper, i cannot tell you the correct answer unless you cover it” ….. IM SORRY! IS A SMALL PICTURE DISTRACTING YOU!? & HOW IS PUTTING SOMETHING OVER IT GOING TO HELP!? Mm!? Well, i cover it, & it is so stupid! It can’t even proofread! It told me that the words that were “incorrect” (by the way, i fact checked it, & the words were correct) & it tells me that the correct answer for gymnasium is “gymnasuim” …i’m sorry, did you just make up a word? WHAT KIND OF AI ARE YOU!? So, i tell it that it’s incorrect, it’s actually “gymnasium” & it tells me, “ I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but can you explain the answer’s to me?” ….. WHY DO YOU THINK I GOT THIS APP!? I mean like, it’s not like I wanted YOU to explain it to me! So, yeah, I'm not going to sit there & waist my time trying to explain a ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PAPER TO AN AI! So, I definitely DON’T recommend this app. ( it’s not even worth 1 star )
