Its Oscar time and in celebration of the 88 th Academy Awards this weekend we have been all things movies this past week. I had a review of Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe (along with our first ever Youtube video ) and then an interview with movie producer Adi Shankar for you over the past week. Now I have compiled a list post of the 18 Best Youtube Movie Channels.

I am a big follower of Youtube channels and also the movie industry. It’s a creative art that requires a lot of different elements such as design, photography, business, music and of course, filmmaking. I’ve always been a fan of the movie industry as a whole and an admirer of the elements involved individually in the creation process.

As time has gone on I’ve found myself digesting movie news and reviews in a digital video format instead of print. I still love reading a long-form feature in a print format but when I’m looking for a review or the latest news in the industry then I now turn to Youtube.

I have compiled together a list of the best movie Youtubers that provide reviews, critics, news or information on the industry. No moviemakers are included in this list, just channels that can help you brush off on your movie knowledge in time for the Oscars.

I’ve often found that if I ever wanted to remind myself of what happened in in a particular movie without watching the entire film then Cinema Sins is also the perfect solution (for instance, I found myself wanting a reminder of what happened in Jurassic Park 3 a few hours before watching Jurassic World. I search Cinema Sins, problem solved).

About : Probably one of the most popular Youtube movie reviewers. His high energy and stand-up like approach to reviewing movies makes for an entertaining watch. He covers near enough any movie that comes out, with a few trailer analysis videos here and there.

About : Their weekly show ‘Movie Fights’ keeps me coming back each and every week. It’s the best movie show quiz on Youtube (I haven’t actually watched another quiz show on Youtube, but if I haven’t heard about it then I doubt it will be better than Movie Fights) and provides a long-form video full of entertainment with guests that range from other Youtubers to Hollywood screen-writers. They also have an Honest Trailer series where they recreate a movie trailer and, well, make it honest.

About : Gone are the days that I will go through about five different websites and around 20 different articles to get a news update of what’s going on in the film industry. Now I watch Colliders movie talk every day to find out what’s going on. Their shows are broadcast live and run from Monday- Friday and cover all the latest news, big trailer releases and even what happened at the box office over the weekend.

This movie Youtube channel isn’t just entertaining because of the presentation (which is great may I add) but because of what is being highlighted and the research and analysis that has obviously been carried out prior to filming a video.

About : Pretty Much It provides a range of different content on their channel. One series they run is their movie commentaries and although they only offer the chance to view short samples on Youtube you can buy the full-feature length commentary if you enjoy what you see.

• Name : Watch Mojo

Watch For : Top 10’s

Subscribers : 10 Million +

About : This channel is the king of Top 10’s and although their content looks at a whole range of topics, their main top 10’s revolve around films. Ever wondered what the worst movie deaths were, or perhaps the funniest movie insults? Well Watch Mojo has you covered.

Subscribers : 1.6 Million +

About : These videos are a little more in-depth and descriptive than what you will find on Watch Mojo, both of which serve a different purpose.

About : The duo of Mark Ellis and Christian Harloff pop up on channels all over Youtube. Their own personal channel covers reviews of all the latest film releases with an element of discussion with the pair on screen together.

17 Best YouTube Movie Channels of 2020 To Check Out

Those on the smaller screen who know all about the big.

There’re tons of channels that celebrate a love for cinema, and even the more popular ones are seemingly uncredited for their insight, hilarity, and genuineness. That lack of representation needs to change, and I want to help change it. My most recent contribution? Compiling this list of talented, funny, wonderful human beings that love movies almost as much as I do.

In a year that had many of us feeling rather uncertain about our futures, the sense of comfort and familiarity these content creators have given us and continue to give us is nothing short of inspiring and certainly worthy of praise. In no particular order, here are 17 of the best YouTube movie channels of 2020. All figures are accurate at the time of writing.

1. C-Reel Productions

Christian’s ability to passionately discuss film and offer his perspective is merely a fraction of what makes C-Reel Productions an entertaining channel.

He currently has 10k subscribers and releases several videos weekly. The channel has been up and running since mid-November of 2016; since which time it has noticeably maintained its friendly vibe, primarily through Christian’s confidence in front of the camera. C-Reel Productions has a slight and enthusiastic focus on the superhero subgenre, but covers many other types of films as well.

2. The Reel Rejects

Debuting all the way back in 2012, Greg and John have been creating consistently good movie reviews, as well as humorous skits and reactions to trailers. Of course back then they went by Ryan and Jerry.

Since then, their channel has grown incredibly popular and the comedic duo have kept us updated with all sorts of movie news in a rather timely manner. If not from me, take it from any of their 788k subscribers, their videos are funny and entertaining, and they put out several new ones a week.

3. Tasha Tipton

Tasha began uploading videos just over a year ago and already has an impressive 7.59k subscribers. She’s sometimes joined by her friends, Emma and Elizabeth, whose reactions are just as priceless as Tasha’s. The channel explores all kinds of genres and even reacts to episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well.

I believe that, with its positive vibe and genuineness of the reaction videos and reviews, Ms. Tipton’s channel has a lot of potential to reach a much wider audience this year, and it would be well deserved.

4. Austin Burke

Austin’s channel has been up and running for about 6 years now and is currently keeping 82.1k subscribers in the loop with neatly edited movie news updates, and well-thought-out rankings and reviews.

It’s obvious that not only does Austin put a lot of effort into these videos, he’s also having fun doing it. He discusses theatrical releases and streaming service productions, several times a week, seemingly with ease. If you’re casually surfing the internet one night unsure of what to watch, Austin’s channel has binge-worthy content that will keep you occupied.

5. Decker Shado

The self-proclaimed “internet personality with the best hair” has a knack for talking fast and thinking even faster. Adequately combining impressive hilarious timing with in-depth critiques of both mainstream and cult films, Decker’s channel never fails to entertain.

He currently has 172k subscribers and 12 years worth of content, with some of his videos including comedic skits, as well as additional notes for his reviews. Even if the movie itself isn’t up your alley, Decker’s reviews are sure to have you laughing.

6. Ashleigh Burton

Almost a year after Ashleigh started her YouTube channel, she’s already at a noteworthy 49.4k subscribers. She has a series of reaction and review videos titled, “Millenial Movie Mondays” where, as the title clearly indicates, Ashleigh reacts to movies that she hasn’t seen.

A lot of the movies seem to be suggestions from her subscribers. It’s obvious a lot of work goes into creating and editing her videos, and the payoff is her genuinely interesting reactions to movies you and I have likely etched into our minds. Extra points for Beans the cat.

7. The Flick Pick

The first thing that got me hooked on John Flickinger’s videos is his love of physical media, primarily because I can relate to that. The Flick Pick is his main channel and has 277k subscribers, and his second channel, John Flickinger, has 97.4k subscribers.

Both feature insightful, well put together videos that terrifically capture what it’s like to be a shamelessly passionate cinephile with seemingly unmatchable heart and energy. His primary channel has been up for 10 years and his secondary channel has been around for 9.

8. Cinema Rules

In just over 5 months of creating videos, Shaun and Tom have managed to attract 42.3k subscribers. The two of them react and review movies one or the other, and sometimes both, have not seen previously.

They began their channel by reviewing classic horror movies and have since explored other genres. One of the most appealing aspects of Cinema Rules is the brotherly bond between the hosts, who clearly aspire to be filmmakers and are passionate enough to pull it off.

Vicky’s original channel has unfortunately fallen victim to YouTube’s restrictive and sometimes unclear policies, however she’s since created a secondary account with the same wonderful effort and insight that makes her channel so unique. Her new channel is currently at 27.8k subscribers, though it’s merely been active for 2 months.

Vicky really focuses on the films she watches to the same professional degree any respectable film critic would. The amiable and intelligent content creators are the most entertaining, and it’s especially evident at VKunia.

10. We Watched A Movie

Mike and J at We Watched A Movie have come a long way in the 9 years they’ve been reviewing movies and creating hilarious parodies and skits, and any of their 125k subscribers will surely tell you the same.

They upload new content weekly, as well as participate in live streams and unboxing videos. Half the fun of their channel is the positive vibe and wild energy the two hosts bring with their big personalities and even bigger appreciation for films, new and old. They’re down to Earth and appreciate their subscribers more than any popular influencer I’m aware of.

11. Zach Pope

No one embodies the spiritedness of cinephilia quite the same way Zach does. He’s been a film critic on YouTube for about 6 years now, reaching 17k subscribers.

There is no shortage of content available with thorough, articulate reviews for an array of films and shows of various genres and subgenres. Zach usually uploads a few videos a week and will occasionally do live Q&A streams, where he continues to clearly show his love for cinema.

12. Facci’s Faccmonster Cinema

Currently at 166k subscribers, Stoned Gremlin Productions is the home of Brad Jones’s “Cinema Snob” host persona and Lloyd the Siamese Cat. The channel has been around since 2015 and never misses an opportunity to comedically offer in-depth criticisms and feedback on movies old and new.

More than that, post-screening reviews with members of “Team Snob” are also worthy of a subscription. One of the most entertaining aspects of The Cinema Snob is the comical and clever pop culture references found in each upload — and Lloyd. Obviously.

14. Drumdums

Not only is Lee one of the nicest human beings on YouTube, he’s also a retired Air Force MSgt, a Rotten Tomatoes critic, and he’s also an avid drummer. Imagine having all that energy, as well as faithfully uploading to YouTube for 7 years, and it’s easy to understand why he has 41.4k subscribers.

Providing thorough critiques and convention videos, Drumdums is easily one of the most enjoyable channels around. Whether it’s reviews, reactions, rankings or revisists, Drumdums is a worthy watch.

15. Chris Stuckmann

One of the most professional and affable film critics around today, Chris Stuckmann is also an author . He currently has 1.88 million subscribers and it’s of course something very well deserved.

Chris has excellent diction, an understanding of the many facets of filmmaking, and balances humor with his professionalism. His channel, now in its 10th year, covers many films, old and new, of different genres and subgenres. You can expect a couple new uploads a month.

16. Jimmy Champane

Jimmy’s channel offers movie news, retrospectives, and more recently, a Halloween fan film. The channel has definitely leaned more towards cinephiles and horror fanatics, though anyone can find joy and be easily fascinated by Jimmy’s kind nature and ability to professionally discuss cinema.

He has 31k subscribers and counting, with a couple monthly video uploads to look forward to. As with every channel I’m listing, Jimmy Champane has a great eye for background set up, thumbnail creation and video editing.

17. Dr. Wolfula

This channel has it all: a memorable host, ruminative, albeit succinct explanations and criticisms, and in-depth knowledge of genre films.

10 years and 107k subscribers later, Dr. Wolfula manages to keep his channel fresh and entertaining, and the amount of dedication to detail is indisputably awe-inspiring. You don’t necessarily have to be a fan of the horror genre to enjoy Dr. Wolfula’s content. In fact, I would argue his reviews are more in-depth than most other reviewers’.

While he addresses both beloved and critically panned movies, the panned movies tend to be the videos that draw the most love from audiences. Sometimes fans just need to know why a plot feels weak or repetitive.

Possum Reviews

Another YouTuber who tends to focus on movies that received overwhelmingly poor receptions, Possum Reviews has grown a large fanbase by putting his attention on reviewing "garbage" movies, as his possum icon indicates. "I really love watching Possum Reviews even though his reviews of blatantly bad movies are really cynical," says Redditor Owijs .

Most of his reviews tend to be funny, which helps to keep the content engaging even when the actual film he reviews is appallingly bad. While he sometimes addresses beloved movies, it's the mediocre ones that draw the most eyes.

While most moviegoers don't think about soundtracks, the YouTuber Sideways goes into detail on just how the best soundtracks in movies interact with each film and create an environment. The topics are all relevant and generally look into the aspects of different productions, both good and bad. The videos range from 10 minutes up to around 2 hours, with “Star Wars: How To Kill A Franchise” clocking in at 1 hour 43 minutes in total.

Their magnum opus comes in the form of “The Fall of Doctor Who”, which is a 5 hour 14 minute video. It’s a brilliant, thought provoking and oftentimes hilarious breakdown of the long-running sci-fi series. In fact, it was even quoted and mocked (undeservedly so) by a journalist who later admitted he hadn’t even watched the video! That’s a shame because had he done so, he’d realize how impressive the feature actually is.

Full Fat Videos is probably unknown to the masses, and that’s a shame because the content here is really well-done. Full Fat Videos are, by their very definition, chock full of content and really do well to break down different parts of movies and TV shows, with the intention of sparking discussions.

The video, “Is X-Men: The Last Stand Really That Bad?” offers up a thought provoking piece that dissects what went wrong with the third X-Men movie and whether the panning from fans and critics alike was justified.

The different video essays rarely run more than 30 minutes, but there’s a lot packed into that time. The most popular essay on the channel is titled “How the Russos Fixed Iron Man | Video Essay” which looks at Tony Stark’s journey across the MCU, and has 2.8 million views.

It was a hard choice between Nostalgia Critic and Chris Stuckmann. I think I made the right choice. I watch Nostalgia Critic because he makes me laugh. That's it. I watch Chris because he makes really good points and he makes pretty good jokes a lot. Also, his "Toy Story 4" review made me watch it, and I absolutely loved it. I was amazed at that movie. Thanks, Chris.

He's my favorite movie reviewer on YouTube. Not only does he have well-written videos, but he also has charisma. While Jeremy Jahns and Nostalgia Critic are funny, both of them are either too fast-paced or come off too unappealing for my tastes. Chris is in-depth and has awesome humor. I also like his Hilariocity (hilarious atrocity movies) reviews. They are so detailed, funny, and rewatchable. Chris Stuckmann is my favorite movie reviewer and YouTuber.

He's charismatic but also gives biased opinions. He usually gives too good reviews to otherwise mediocre movies, so it's hard to take his opinion into consideration, really.

How is this guy not higher on the list? Most of his reviews are evenly balanced (key word is MOST), and he ends all of his videos being very cheerful and happy.

Recently, Screen Junkies News has upped their game. They're focusing more on the mechanics behind Hollywood, a bit political economy-ish at times. As a weekly news source, I'd say they're my favorite. Better and more intelligent dialogue than most panel-based YouTube shows. And not so serious that they're not enjoyable to hang out with.

He's a great critic, and his rants are hilarious!

First and foremost: YouTube has free movies beyond just the clips people upload and channels post. We're talking legit films that we all paid money to go see in theaters.

Our list of the best free movies on YouTube includes one of Tom Cruise's best films of all time, an under-appreciated thriller featuring John Goodman and one of the Coen Brothers' best films. So, what's the catch, I can hear you ask.

If you watch these free movies on YouTube, you'll have to sit through ads. Or at least you would if you don't have YouTube Premium , which erases ads from all YouTube videos. Oh, and some of them aren't streaming in HD, either. But that's not exactly surprising when YouTube is also a site that sells movie rentals and purchases.

10 Cloverfield Lane

Cloverfield is a name that has a lot of connotations in movies these days, after the woefully received 2008 movie of the same name. But 10 Cloverfield Lane is a must-see no matter if you saw Cloverfield or not. A "bottle episode" of a movie, it takes place nearly entirely in a bunker where Howard (Goodman) has been keeping Michelle (Winstead) after he found her post-car crash. Howard doesn't seem entirely trustworthy (and he's more than a little creepy), so Michelle doesn't know if she should believe him that the outside world has been destroyed by a chemical attack. Tension ramps up as Michelle learns more and more about Howard.

Researching this story gave me plenty of surprises, not the least of which including the reveal that the fantastic award-winning There Will Be Blood is actually free on YouTube. Another fantastic Daniel Day-Lewis performance — this time as miner Daniel Plainview — anchors this amazing film about how money corrupts man. Yes, that description, and the story of how oil ruins everything it touches, isn't exactly new. That said, There Will Be Blood thrives off of amazing work from all involved, including co-star Paul Dano, director Paul Thomas Anderson and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, whose original orchestral score ties the whole thing together.

The endgame for these wargames comes through trying to convince the AI behind WOPR about the reasons to not go to war. Perhaps the spaghetti Western, Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is more proof that the best free movies on YouTube include inarguable classics. Clint Eastwood stars as a bounty hunter called Blondie who has to work with two fellow lowlifes — Tuco (Eli Wallach) and Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef) — to find buried gold. Betrayal, murder and bullets all pour in the subsequent scenes. Ennio Morricone provides a fantastic score, filled with songs that will get stuck in your head.

There are movies that use comedy as punchlines, with gaps in between riffs. And then there's Airplane!, a film that is constantly trying to make you laugh, and likely make the cast crack up, too. It all revolves around a whole plane's crew and passengers who are struck with food poisoning. Hilarious if you lived through the spate of disaster films released right before Airplane! came out in 1980, but still funny if you love a good punchline.

Minority Report

Again, our search for the best free movies on YouTube let us hit another gem with one of Tom Cruise's top movies: Minority Report. An adaptation of Philip K. Dick's novella of the same name, the film revolves around the concept of precrime: the "art" of using a trio of psychics to figure out and stop crime before it's even committed. The inherent issues of the system, judging someone for something they haven't done, are brought to light when Chief Paul Anderton (Cruise) is accused of murdering a man he's never met. He then dives into the system to reveal how (or if) he's been framed.

Romeo + Juliet

Director Baz Luhrman's color-soaked and emotional adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy came out at just the right time. Dropped right during Leonardo DiCaprio's ascendance to be the king of the teen heart-throbs, this version of Romeo & Juliet seems ripped from MTV with its look. Claire Danes, as Juliet, is a perfect match for this Romeo, and their chemistry made this movie feel like the ideal setup for Titanic, the following year's mega-blockbuster. It doesn't hurt that DiCaprio is surrounded by a team of all-stars working their best magic, including an excellent performances from John Leguizamo as Tybalt.

But I'm a Cheerleader

A nice and light satirical comedy, But I'm a Cheerleader gives us one of the few starring roles in Natasha Lyonne's early career — well before Russian Doll reminded everyone that she was severely underrated. The film is focused on Megan (Lyonne), who thinks she's a normal high school girl, or at least she did before her panicked parents declare her to be gay and send her to a True Directions, a boot camp meant to force her back into heterosexuality. And, of course, her visit to True Directions leads to Megan questioning her heterosexuality.

Spaceballs, a low-fi Star Wars parody, may not leave you saying "may the Schwartz be with you," but you may remember it for making sure the farce is with you. With characters such as Yogurt, Pizza The Hutt and Lord Dark Helmet, Spaceballs is a movie for people who don't believe in subtlety. Not every joke may hit, but the ratio is strong enough to make this a memorable movie that many nerds of a certain vintage will love to put on, but probably don't know it's one of the best free movies on YouTube.

Pumping Iron

If you thought Arnold Schwarzenegger was a weird adult, you should see young Arnie in this documentary shot during his days as a young body-builder. Through a series of interviews with Schwarzenegger in the days before the Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia competitions (and during said events), the film shows a side of the megastar you've probably never seen. Surrounded by his fellow bodybuilders, Schwarzenegger constantly says the unexpected, and you get a glimpse of how he became so popular — as it was all happening.

Alien: Romulus Wants to Be All the Alien Movies at Once

The grand horror, and dark fun, of the Alien movies lie in their moments of discovery: an unsuspecting crew wanders into a parasitic nightmare which reveals itself in sudden, gruesome fashion. Of course, that shock has dulled some since Ridley Scott ’s original 1979 film; it’s been repeated over and over again in seven other movies, and now an eighth, Alien: Romulus , in theaters on August 16. We anticipate a face-hugger grabbing onto some poor sap’s skull, the violent explosion of their chest, the gooey uncoiling of a monster hiding right above the heroes’ heads. It’s a familiar pattern. But when done the right way, these iterative beats are dreadfully good—the franchise has endured for a reason.

In the last 12 years, though, the Alien movies have become heavy with mythology about the terrible creation of life on Earth and other places in the universe. Elegant creature-feature has given way to God and existential quandary. It’s less and less clear if we are meant to be drawn in by the icky jump scares or the brooding, nihilistic philosophy. Romulus finds itself caught between those two modes, wanting efficiency and ornate meaning at once.

Fede Álvarez ’s film is handsomely mounted and propulsively grim, another Alien misery about people stuck in an impossible, surely fatal situation. This time around, the people involved are relative youngsters, children of a system of indentured servitude managed with capitalist antipathy by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation—the sinister entity that has loomed over nearly all of the films in this scattershot series. Rain ( Cailee Spaeny ) and her friends are stuck on a permanent-night mining colony, a bleak place from which escape seems impossible. Their parents have died on the job, and they will likely suffer the same fate. Still, Rain dreams of a place in the sun, far away. When the opportunity to steal some cryo-sleep pods and flee her prison arises, she figures she must seize it.

The mission involves looting a Weyland-Yutani space station that is drifting in the aether overhead, presumed abandoned. Of course there are in fact things living on this vessel, which Rain and company encounter with gnarly results. In this introductory stretch, Álvarez’s compositions are grimy in a stately manner, nicely mimicking the ragged texture of the first film, all its dingy hallways and groaning machinery. There is also a welcome echo of Alien ’s elegy for the working class; these people are just trying to live a little bit better, and are punished mightily for it. But Romulus is also more interested in action than was its 45-year-old parent, requiring the use of CGI and set-piece spectacle that undermines the cramped, practical terror of the film’s first third.

Romulus , which is set between Alien and Aliens , initially seems like a straight “requel” of Alien —essentially the same claustrophobic setup, done with more modern flair and an eye toward expanding the story into the future. Something like The Force Awakens , which closely mirrored the plot structure of Star Wars without writing over it. But as Romulus rolls along, it gathers in elements from 1986’s Aliens , 2012’s Prometheus , and 2017’s Alien: Covenant , becoming a pastiche of the franchise as a whole. It’s a little overindulgent, maybe, full of Easter eggs and callbacks—there are electric prods like the one wielded by Harry Dean Stanton in Alien ; a flutter of the Prometheus score serves as a cue to remember that movie—while also trying to invent its own vernacular. Romulus ’s contribution to the emergent lore about DNA and the seeds of life is certainly gross and scary, but is really only a less compelling rehash of the wilder ideas of Prometheus and Covenant .

What begins as a humble “there’s a monster in the room with us” horror gradually expands into something baroque. To offset that swell, Romulus attempts to ground the story in personal narrative: Rain’s deep care for her “brother,” Andy ( David Jonsson ), a slightly defective android whose mis-wiring renders him a rather unsubtle stand-in for neurodivergent people here in our real world. Benjamin Wallfisch ’s turgid, discordantly sentimental score is at its most glaring when Rain and Andy are sharing some moment of emotional angst, strangely maudlin notes in a movie that is otherwise steadfastly cruel to its characters. I suppose you could chalk up such noodling over family and identity to softer millennial sensibilities. (The Andy plotline also necessitates the virtual resurrection of a beloved late actor, a practice I wish the industry would abandon entirely.)

Still, the movie is successful in its most basic function. A gravity device introduced early on is satisfyingly employed two acts later. The awe and desolation of outer space’s howling enormity is well conjured. The actors—the cast also includes Archie Renaux , Isabela Merced , and Spike Fearn —all keenly register the gut-wrenching terror of encountering such a ruthless, otherworldly, acid-blood-boobytrapped enemy. If it hadn’t had someone of Álvarez’s care and attention at the helm, Romulus could certainly have been a lot worse.

One does wonder, though, how many more times we can watch this same chain of events play out. We’ve seen it in space, we’ve seen it on mysterious planets, we’ve even seen it on Earth. (The latter provides the setting for the Alien vs. Predator films, which I am perhaps unfairly including as part of the same franchise.) Stylish as any future outing might be—and Romulus is certainly that—there will likely be an increasing conviction that further embellishment is the only viable path to originality. An irony, perhaps, when so much of the argument of Romulus and its brethren is that seeking a higher form through dangerous experimentation will lead to ruin. Those lessons seem difficult to take to heart. When the experiment doesn’t work—Weyland-Yutani and Hollywood keep figuring—it’s best to just try it again at a later date, with newer and more dangerous methods.

Bad Monkey Season 1 Review

A colorful crime comedy highlighting vince vaughn at his fast-talking best..

Vince Vaughn has made a career of playing characters like Bad Monkey’s Andrew Yancy: wisecracking cynics who seamlessly switch between sarcastic one-liners and charming missives. It’s the kind of role Vaughn can play in his sleep, but his crackling performance in this new Apple TV+ series suggests an actor giving maximum effort. Adapted by Bill Lawrence from Carl Hiaasen's 2013 bestseller of the same name, Bad Monkey sees the co-creator of Ted Lasso and Shrinking gathering another group of misfits and oddballs in an entertaining, if not scattered, crime comedy that kicks off with the discovery of a severed arm with its middle finger extended.

Set in the Florida Keys, Miami, and Andros (the largest island in the Bahamas), Bad Monkey takes advantage of these vibrant locales – they play an integral role in the motives of the heroes and villains. Yancy may be a former Miami detective who’s now working in the Keys as a health inspector, but this is a self-inflicted downgrade – and it isn't all bad. Although his current job is unfulfilling, the view from his oceanside house has a nurturing and therapeutic effect. While the disgraced detective is described as "consistently reckless, inappropriate, and glib," he does have a softer side: He’s so deeply connected to nature, he lights the outside of his home with red bulbs to help guide baby turtles back to the surf. It’s the classic gruff exterior/heart of gold combo, meaning Yancy doesn’t fall too far into asshole territory. Plus, the red lighting adds to the tension during romantic interludes and a dangerous standoff later in the season.

Early on, as the pieces quickly fall into place, Yancy realizes the case of the potentially fatal flipped bird is the perfect stopgap until he gets his gun and badge back. The mystery leads him to medical examiner Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez), who feels lost in a career that exposes her to the worst of humanity. Immediately, their fast-talking, flirtatious interactions have a screwball energy that taps into Vaughn and Martinez's undeniable chemistry. Martinez more than holds her own during the morgue meet-cute and subsequent team-ups, volleying quips right back at her co-star.

Witty banter is a longtime Lawrence signature that’s come to define his Apple TV+ output. Like Ted Lasso and Shrinking, Bad Monkey is led by characters who struggle to communicate, but Yancy has a stronger sense of self than Coach Lasso or Jimmy Laird. (While his career is going down the drain, confidence is not something he lacks.) The ensemble that’s built around Yancy further distinguishes Bad Monkey as the work of the TV veteran who created beloved early 21st century comedies Scrubs and Cougar Town . Each of the relationships that splinter off from Vaughn’s character adds layers to a guy who’s as lovable as he is self-destructive. Best friend and former partner Rogelio Burton (John Ortiz) is the grouchy voice of reason, who also brings the mysterious arm into Yancy's life. Endless bickering between this duo offers insight into how Yancy functions in a partnership, but the underlying love is equally telling.

Tom Nowicki pulls double duty as a fishing boat captain and narrator whose gruff voice adds to the series’ humor and contemporary hardboiled detective atmosphere; Search Party ’s Meredith Hagner gives Yancy a worthy adversary as Eve Strippling, the widow of the man whose arm gets all of Bad Monkey’s balls rolling. She’s a scene-stealer who hilariously struggles to squeeze out any tears over her dead husband’s fate. Eve is quick to move on with property developer Christopher (Rob Delaney), who, despite first appearance, is more puppy dog than terrifying. Opposite Hagner, Delaney is reliably great as the man whose wheeling and dealing is a threat to this piece of paradise.

Nowicki’s narration does some heavy lifting to assure us that the various threads strung around the central case will come together, but the story suffers from feeling disconnected at times. The Keys and Andros portions of Bad Monkey are linked by depictions of humankind’s detrimental impact on wildlife. Conflict on the island, which veers in some surprising directions, centers on the Obeah-practicing Dragon Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith, deftly portraying a woman whose complexities extend beyond her personal beliefs and rituals), her grandmother YaYa (L. Scott Caldwell), and the different players in the luxury development saga that’s threatening the home and livelihood of Bahamian fisherman Neville Stafford (Ronald Peet). (Neville’s capuchin monkey, Driggs, is the series’ simian namesake.) Back in Florida, Michelle Monaghan, as Yancy's ex, Bonnie, is compelling as a woman who wants to live in a great novel, but hers is one storyline that starts strong before adding to the meandering overtones. The prevailing trends of the streaming age tend to either rush a series or lazily nudge it toward the finish line, and the first season of Bad Monkey lands more in the latter camp – the shortest of its 10 episodes is 40 minutes.

But while the season could do with two fewer episodes, spending time with guest stars like Scott Glenn, Ashley Nicole Black, and Zach Braff is never a bad thing. And it’s never hard to look at: Bold blues and lush greens make Bad Monkey pop without throwing an unnecessary orange filter that lesser shows use as visual shorthand for “Florida.” (Hello, CSI: Miami.) Not all the bright shades give Yancy the calming effect he’s seeking, and a yellow eyesore property next to his "happy place" provides an amusing, constantly escalating running joke. Despite some overall shagginess and meandering storytelling, Bad Monkey is consistently funny, and Vaughn does a stellar job captaining this boat.

Big names continue to flock to Apple TV+, and Vince Vaughn's turn as a wise-cracking detective effortlessly taps into his established comedic persona. Vaughn's charming turn as detective-turned-health inspector Andrew Yancy means that Bad Monkey is entertaining even when its story slouches toward its conclusion. The ensemble also shines throughout, featuring standout performances from Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, and Jodie Turner-Smith. Bad Monkey is a show that makes the most of its striking locations, doing justice to the bold colors of the Florida and Bahamas settings. Executive producer Bill Lawrence is now three for three with Apple shows, delivering a match made in heaven with Vaughn.

I’m not sure I knew of anyone, Borderlands fan or not, who believed that the movie adaptation of the game was going to be good, based on everything from casting to trailers. Now as reviews come in ahead of its release tomorrow, those fears have been validated. And then some.

As I write this, the Borderlands movie has a flat 0% on Rotten Tomatoes . No positive reviews whatsoever ( Update : A single positive review has come in raising it to a 3%), and the ones that are in are not just negative, but brutal . Here’s a sampling:

• Discussing Film: “The fans deserve a lot better than whatever director Eli Roth is trying to do with Borderlands. This is the video game movie curse at its worst.”
• Men’s Journal: “If Borderlands doesn't stop studio executives from salivating at the sight of every single IP that comes across their desks, nothing will.”
• Next Best Picture : “It’s impressive how Roth can elicit the poor quality of 2000s video game adaptation energy yet somehow forget the discernable sense of fun or style that made even those terrible movies stand out.”
• IGN : “Borderlands is an abysmal waste of a beloved franchise that takes a kooky band of murderous misfits and drains the life out of their first adventure together.”

It’s true there are not many reviews in yet, and the score may tick up, but everything I’ve seen outside of some video game influencers who attended premieres (or are literally extras in the movie) has been relentlessly negative, and I would be surprised to find more than a handful of positive reviews come in when all is said and done. If any.

A 0% on Rotten Tomatoes is of course as low as you can go. If we are looking at the worst-scored video game movies ever made, that list would now be (Updated list with the 4%):

• Alone in the Dark (2005) – 1%
• Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) – 3%
• House of the Dead (2003) – 3%
• Borderlands (2024) – 3%
• In the Name of the King (2007) – 4%
• Bloodrayne (2005) – 4%
• Mortal Kombat Annihilation- 4%
• Silent Hill Revelation (2012) – 8%
• Hitman Agent: 47 (2015) – 8%
• Postal (2007) – 9%

I put the year there so you can see that most of these ultra-terrible ones are in a decade or so when making a good video game adaptation was borderline impossible and the only people trying were directors like Uwe Boll half the time. As of late, we have seen very solid live action video game adaptations on both film (Sonic) and TV (The Last of Us, Fallout), and Borderlands seems to be a 10-15 year step backward.

I do expect it to rise above a zero percent. There are so many critics on Rotten Tomatoes of questionable quality and taste that probably someone will like it and knock it above some of these (I am one of those critics, so no judgement), but that has not happened at the time of this writing.

Who saw this coming? Everyone. Everyone did. And here we are.

Update (8/10): We have 92 reviews in now, and Borderlands has gone from 0% to 3% to now settling at around 10%. This puts it outside much higher on the “worst video game adaptations ever” list, which would now look like

• Borderlands (2024) - 10%

Of course there is absolutely no pretending a 10% is good. I do agree, however, that it does not deserve to be quite as low as that terrible decade of Uwe Boll movies and a few other very poor ones. Like no, this is definitely not on par with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

I have indeed now seen the movie myself, and a 10% is something I can get behind. My own negative review is now on Rotten Tomatoes, and here’s an excerpt:

“This is neither a good Borderlands movie or nor a good movie, period. It feels like Gearbox and Eli Roth tried to split the difference here, making a mass-appeal PG-13 action film but gesturing vaguely at the games to try to get that crowd to show up too.

But the end result is throwing the Borderlands games at a wall, watching them shatter, and gluing back together a handful of mildly recognizable pieces.”

I said in the piece that the casting of Kevin Hart and Cate Blanchett are big problems, as expected. Hart mostly acts like a barely toned-down version of his usual self, and is nothing like game Roland. Blanchett is of course normally a great actress but a 30 year or so age increase from Lilith is bizarre, and also makes no sense within the confines of the film as actresses close to her age appear to remember her as a child.

This is a franchise killer. Gearbox had big plans for a Borderlands cinematic universe that is clearly going nowhere after this. And given how this went, that is fully justified.
