Special Initiative to Commemorate the 56 th Anniversary of ASEAN Establishment: Written and Visual Essay Competition “Which Road for Southeast Asia?”

SEA Junction, in collaboration with the John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) Foundation of Thailand, announces an essay competition to invite emerging writers and artists from countries in Southeast Asia to reflect on the future of their region and the eventual role of Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN.

The title of the call relates to an article written by Mr. Thanat Khoman –the late diplomat and former Minister of Foreign Affairs (1959-1971) of Thailand who played a role in the establishment of this regional body in 1967 and was also the Founder of the JFK Foundation–for the establishment of ASEAN. Taking inspiration from it, on the occasion of the 56 th Anniversary of ASEAN on 8 August 2023, we re-propose the question of what is needed to realize an integrated region and particularly a genuine community for all.

The COVID-19 pandemic, the coup in Myanmar and autocratic changes in other member states, unresolved geo-political tensions and recessionary pressures have brought attention towards ASEAN, prompting crucial questions on whether it is fulfilling or failing to fulfill its role, and have put a spotlight on regional development and interaction. [1] With growing questions on whether ASEAN is indeed people-oriented as it claims in its Charter and “for whom” and whose interests ASEAN is acting, there is an urgency to learn more about young people’ views about what future they envision for their region and for the regional body that supposedly serve it. The here announced Written and Visual Essay Competition “Which Road for Southeast Asia?” aims to elicit such views providing a multi-media platform for free expression to concerned youth.

  • The submitted essays (both in writing or in visual format) should 1) reflect on recent developments of regional relevance in Southeast Asia 2) examine the role of ASEAN in addressing current and emerging issues and, most importantly 3) propose a vision for the future of Southeast Asia and attaining a genuine “community” with or without ASEAN. A critical examination is expected of achievements and challenges in regional developments and how they relate to ASEAN performance. Specific transnational issues could be examined so as to ground the presented arguments.

Eligibility:

  • Participation is open to emerging writers and artists from countries in Southeast Asia (including Timor Leste).

Essay requirement:

  • Essays must be original and written in English.

Written Essays:

  • Submissions must fall within the range of 1,500 to 2,500 words (3-5 pages).

Visual or art essays:

  • Each artwork should be accompanied by a concise caption. Additionally, an essay description of approximately 500 to 1,000 words is required.
  • For photography submissions, a minimum of 18 photos is required.
  • For painting and digital art submissions, a minimum of 10 pieces is requested. However, the quantity can be adapted based on the art format and will be duly considered .

Evaluation Criteria

Entries will be shortlisted to be judged by a panel of experts (to be announced soon) based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the theme
  • Innovativeness
  • Analytical clarity
  • Accuracy and Evidence-Based
  • Contextual knowledge of the region
  • Aesthetic value

Please note that academic criteria for content style and references should be followed and plagiarism and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the creation of the essays, including but not limited to AI Generated Art and ChatGPT, is strictly prohibited.

For each of the two categories (written essays and visual essays) the following prizes will be awarded, summing up to a total of six awards:

  • First Prize: A cash reward of USD 750
  • Second Prize: A cash reward of USD 500
  • Third Prize: A cash reward of USD 250

All essays that make the shortlist will be published on our website and distributed across our social media platforms.

Please note that copyright of all the content submitted for this competition remains with the respective entrants, with the organizers having the licence to use the content for their activities and social media.

ELEVATING YOUTH VOICES IN ASEAN – 2023 ASEAN YOUTH SOCIAL JOURNALISM CONTEST

asean essay competition 2023

Twenty exceptional youth from across ASEAN tackled a range of community resilience challenges – spanning climate justice, inclusive education, and nutrition – through creative campaigns as part of this year’s ASEAN Youth Social Journalism Contest.

Working in two-person country teams, the ten finalist teams put their new skills to work by running month-long social media campaigns directly following the workshop. Their campaigns highlighted a range of community resilience concerns such as nutrition, inclusive education, and reducing plastic waste and included both online and offline activities. The teams displayed boundless creativity, strategic thinking, and dedication in service of the social causes they identified.

For Abby Grace E. Bermejo and Krystel Mae J. Penaflor, finalists from the Philippines and co-founders of Youth Climate Navigators, their AYSJ campaign was driven by their motivation to engage and empower more Filipino youth in environmental advocacy and climate action. Krystel and Abby come from Los Banos, a remote, disaster-prone area along the Pacific typhoon belt where communities face up to twenty typhoons per year. Krystel explained that their AYSJ campaign, #ClimateResilientIslandsPH, sought to “use citizen science journalism to provide early warnings and preparedness during super typhoons… to use social media platforms for localized information dissemination to bridge the communication gap during typhoons, an approach that aligns well with the ASEAN region’s aim to enhance community resilience to climate change, particularly on remote and vulnerable islands with limited access to mainstream media.”

asean essay competition 2023

For their compelling campaign, which reached over 140,000 social media users in just a month, Abby and Krystel clinched first place in this year’s AYSJ Contest. Looking ahead, Abby and Krystel have an ambitious vision to expand their campaign beyond. According to Krystel, “Winning first prize in the competition was a major achievement for us, but it’s just the beginning. We’re now actively exploring opportunities both locally and abroad to mobilize and increase engagements for our campaign, both online and offline. One area we are particularly focused on is the development of our Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction training modules. We plan to use a portion of our AYSJ prize to support this important project. And were actively seeking seed funding and microgrants from organizations like USAID and other agencies to launch more impactful activities.”

Abby and Krystel were joined at the top by Wai Liam Phyo Kyaw and Po Po Myint Shein of Myanmar, who won 2nd place, for their campaign to spread knowledge about nutrition and promoting healthier lifestyles and Soon Ping Wong and Yung Kang Lo of Malaysia, who won 3rd place, for their campaign to promote inclusive education and combat dropout rates among indigenous community students.

Recognizing the ongoing challenges posed by political upheaval and pandemic recovery, the Myanmar finalists relayed that their participation in the AYSJ contest provided “motivation and new hope to continue [their] passion using the power of communication, journalism, and storytelling.” Finalist teams from Cambodia and Lao PDR also received special recognition for their campaigns to address water, sanitation, hygiene management, and promoting sexual health education, respectively.

Background of the AYSJ Contest

The AYSJ Contest was first launched in 2017 by USAID’s ASEAN-U.S. Partnership for Good Governance, Equitable and Sustainable Development and Security (PROGRESS) project and continued through the ASEAN-USAID Partnership for Regional Optimization within the Political-Security and Socio-Cultural Communities (PROSPECT) project, in collaboration with the ASEAN Foundation and ASEAN Secretariat. Since 2017, over 75 youth have participated in the initiative. The first AYSJ was held in Bander Seri Begawan while the second was conducted entirely online in 2021. Past AYSJ finalists have gone on to pursue studies in civic engagement, as well as careers in creative writing for NGOs and media outlets. USAID has continued the AYSJ Contest and other youth-focused initiatives to promote youth engagement and empowerment to active youth leaders as catalytic change-makers, helping contribute to addressing critical challenges in their communities as well as the wider ASEAN Community.

In collaboration with the Institute for East Asian Studies at Sogang University (SIEAS) and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), AKC will host the ‘2023 ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest’, inviting graduate and undergraduate students of ASEAN and Korean nationalities.

AKC looks forward to receiving proposals for ‘Strengthening ASEAN-Korea Strategic Partnership in a Changing Global Landscape’. You may refer to the attachments for more details and requirements:

1. AKC General Guidelines

Organized by.

ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC)

Academic Partnership with

Institute for East Asian Studies at Sogang University (SIEAS)

ASEAN Studies Centre at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM)

Supported by

ASEAN Secretariat, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ROK), ASEAN University Network

Background

Community-centered relations continue to be the focal to the ASEAN-Korea partnership. Particularly, this has provided vast opportunities for greater participation and engagement for youths in both regions to contribute towards solidifying the partnership between ASEAN and Korea and promoting its integration. As the future leaders of the ASEAN-Korea community and potential beneficiaries of a sustainable ASEAN-Korea partnership, it is critical for youth to have avid interests in emerging issues relevant to ASEAN-Korea relations. This devotion is expected to help students to build their own objective stance as a whole. This is why this concept of community is being emphasized today, which is also found in the government’s international partnership framework such as, but not limited to ROK’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and Korea-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative (KASI).

To realize these efforts, ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC) in collaboration with the Institute for East Asian Studies at Sogang University (SIEAS) and the ASEAN Studies Centre at the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is hosting the ‘2023 ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest’ inviting graduate and undergraduate students of ASEAN and Korean nationalities to participate. The Contest aims to provide an avenue for students to thoroughly conduct research and share their perspectives and knowledge on ASEAN and ASEAN-Korea relations.

Through this Contest, we look forward to receiving original, yet coherent essays in promoting the ASEAN-Korea relationship and suggestions as to how ASEAN and Korea can further expand their cooperation towards a more sustainable ASEAN-Korea partnership.

Interested applicants can work as an individual or in teams (up to 2 students) and are advised to work with the guidance of an academic advisor when writing both the proposal and the final essay.

Strengthening ASEAN-Korea Strategic Partnership in a Changing Global Landscape, through one of the following sub-topics:

This year, the overall theme focuses on strengthening the ASEAN-Korea partnership as indicated above. In the announcement made by ROK’s President Yoon’s administration at the ASEAN-ROK Summit last November, the critical role of ASEAN-Korea relations through cooperation was emphasized. The Contest is expected to generate greater participation and engagement for youths within this cooperation. This is highly important, as the idea is also indicated in the ROK’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and KASI. This also corresponds to ROK’s ambition to elevate the partnership status to ‘Comprehensive Strategic Partnership’ (CSP) by 2024. Hence, AKC’s commitments and efforts towards solidifying the partnership within the youth population will be carried out through the Contest by inviting students to express their views or ideas, through one of the essay sub-topics below:

1) Current Discourse and Perceptions on ASEAN-Korea Relations and Ways to Improve Perceptions; or

According to the ‘Survey on Mutual Perceptions of ASEAN and Korean Youths’ conducted by AKC (2022), there are apparent gaps in the levels of mutual awareness and understanding that ASEAN and Korean youths have of one another. With this psychological distance in mind, option 1 invites students to discuss the current discourse and perceptions on ASEAN-Korea relations with their take on this, as well as to provide original ideas that can surmount this gap. This is ultimately to achieve a more inclusive, mutually beneficial, and sustainable relationship.

2) Synergies in Digital and Green Initiatives for Sustainable and Mutually Beneficial ASEAN-Korea Partnership

For option 2, students are expected to analyze synergies in emerging and innovative areas of digital and green initiatives for the ASEAN-Korea partnership. It is important for students to link this to sustainable and mutually beneficial ASEAN-Korea partnership as well. As it has been forecasted that by 2040, the ASEAN region is to increase its regional GDP to US$20 trillion fueled by a population size of 770 million,  students can take advantage to also elaborate this ASEAN growth further to the essay question. Moreover, policy suggestions or future implications can also be made throughout. Last but not least, students may offer policy suggestions that are beneficial to the ASEAN-Korea partnership or cooperation.

  • While the South China Sea is the main issue exposing the organization’s rifts.
  • ASEAN has been divided over major issues of human rights. For example, crackdowns in Myanmar against the Rohingyas.
  • Inability to negotiate a unified approach with regards to China, particularly in response to its widespread maritime claims in the South China Sea.
  • The emphasis on consensus sometimes becomes the a chief drawback – difficult problems have been avoided rather than confronted.
  • There is no central mechanism to enforce compliance.

  • Political Security Cooperation: India places ASEAN at the centre of its Indo-Pacific vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region.

What is the Significance of ASEAN for India?

  • India needs a close diplomatic relationship with ASEAN nations both for economic and security reasons.
  • Connectivity with the ASEAN nations can allow India to improve its presence in the region.
  • These connectivity projects keep Northeast India at the centre, ensuring the economic growth of the northeastern states.
  • Improved trade ties with the ASEAN nations would mean a counter to China’s presence in the region and economic growth and development for India.
  • ASEAN occupies a centralised position in the rules-based security architecture in the Indo-Pacific, which is vital for India since most of its trade is dependent on maritime security.
  • Collaboration with the ASEAN nations is necessary to counter insurgency in the Northeast, combat terrorism, tax evasions etc.

About The Competition

ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ASEAN DSE) competition is one element of the ASEAN DSE programme, which aims to:

  • Promote ASEAN awareness, particularly ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together , ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025 (ASCC) , and ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint 2025 (AEC)
  • Promote United Nations – Sustainable Development Goals ( UN-SDGs )
  • Empower youths across the 10 ASEAN Member States with data analytics skills and other relevant skills such as problem-solving skill, critical thinking skill, analytical thinking skill, collaboration skill, and communication skill
  • Inspire youths across the ASEAN region to take part in tackling pressing socio-economic issues across the region through data-driven proposals that will contribute to the achievement of the UN-SDGs within the region

ASEAN DSE competition has been endorsed by the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Youth (SOMY) and ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Education (SOM-ED) as it supports the achievement of the ASEAN Work Plan on Youth and Education 2021-2025.

Who are eligible to participate in this Competition?

This competition is dedicated to youths with ASEAN nationality aged 15 to 30 currently undertaking full-time education in educational institutions (high school, polytechnic, universities, etc.) based in the 10 ASEAN countries. Detailed information about the eligibility of participants can be found here .

What to do?

In this competition, your team (one team comprising two students from the same ASEAN country) is required to develop data analytics storyboards/proposals using SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC). You need to choose one particular issue in ASEAN across the six selected SDGs to solve through their data analytics storyboard.

asean essay competition 2023

After your team selected the issue, the team is advised to gather relevant datasets to analyse using SAC and start developing their storyboard. You can use  this list of sources to gather your datasets or other reliable sources you know and are familiar with. If you are not familiar with SAC and how to operate it, you can learn about it  through the SAC Manual and mock-up datasets we have provided in this website. Alternatively, you can join the enablement session, SAC and SAP Build App training session, organised by us and our working partners. Updates on the dates of the enablement session are published on our social media platforms.

We advise your team to create an app using SAP Build App or any technological product/prototype as the solutions/recommendations (or one of the solutions) to solve the issue your team has picked to get a better chance of being shortlisted for the National Finals.

How to participate in this competition?

First, you have to ensure that you are eligible to participate in the competition. Please refer to the Eligibility section for detailed information. If you are eligible, then you have to find your partner from the same educational institution (high school, university, polytechnic, etc.) or different institution who is eligible as well. Ensure that you and your partner have the same ASEAN nationality as you both will represent your ASEAN country in the competition.

Second, sign up to the competition by completing the registration form through this link . Ensure you provide all the requested information in the form to qualify your team in the competition. You will receive email notification when your team has successfully registered to the competition. We will verify your registration and email you to complete your registration if your registration is incomplete. You can login to the ASEAN DSE website to complete your team’s registration. Once we verified your registration and your team qualify for the competition, we will give you the SAC account for free. You will use this account to develop your storyboard. The account will be sent directly to the email addresses of both team leader and team member. Therefore, you need to ensure that the email addresses are correct when you fill out the registration form. Note that one team will only receive one SAC account. When you want to develop an app using SAP Build Apps as a solution to address the issue you discuss in your storyboard, you can set up SAP Build Apps on an SAP BTP Trial Account .

Third, after your team finish creating your storyboard, submit it to us through this link . Your team can only submit the storyboard when submission period is open. We will notify all registered teams when the period is open. You can also refer to the timeline of the entire programme on Homepage of the website to find the submission period information. Your team can submit the revised/updated storyboard by logging into the ASEAN DSE website and submitting the revised/updated one. This will by default replace the old one.

After the submission period is closed, we will assess and evaluate all the submitted storyboards against the set assessment criteria. We will notify all shortlisted teams who will move on to the national final stage through emails and ask them to confirm if they will proceed to the national final. We will also notify the teams who are not moving to the national final through emails.

When you are shortlisted for the national final, you will be required to prepare PowerPoint Presentation slides and submit them to us. You will also be given a deep-dive session (mentoring session) on SAP Build Apps to help you build or refine your app. You will have about three to four weeks to prepare these slides and/or the app after you’re notified of you being shortlisted. You will present these slides   (with or without the app) at the national final and judging at the national final will be based on the slides.

You can also refer steps to joining the competition for the same information.

Are there any requirements for the storyboards?

You can refer to data analytics storyboard requirements for details. Ensure your storyboard meets the set requirements; otherwise, your storyboard will not qualify for assessment.

Cerita di Balik Meraih Excellence Prize Pada Lomba Internasional ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest 2024

  • Student Activities

https://www.aseankorea.org/eng/board/9/56744/board_view.do?&pageSize=5&listType=list&bdOpenYn=Y&viewYn=Y
