University Friendships—and Beyond

The undergraduate considers friendships on and away from campus..

November-December 2020

My earliest friendships at Harvard were fashioned on a T-ride to Fields Corner, where a group of fellow first-year students and I were to help repaint a Vietnamese American community center during a weeklong preorientation program.

On that sunny August morning commute from Cambridge to Dorchester, in our matching purple preorientation T-shirts, we played icebreaker games and bonded over the inimitable teenage vogue of late 2017: fidget spinners, Snapchat streaks, Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You.”

During the initial days of freshman orientation, my new friends and I clung tightly to one another. We gave each other tours of our respective dorm rooms in the Yard. We coordinated frequent meals in Annenberg Hall, terrified to sit alone amid hundreds of unfamiliar faces. We relished 25-cent Wednesday wings at the Queen’s Head Pub. We went thrift-shopping in Central Square.

But as the weeks passed, we became to one another what Indian Canadian essayist Scaachi Koul deems the “University Friend.” In One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter , Koul defines such a friend as existing “in only one ecosystem, a relationship that requires the confines of a school, of a space in time where you are lost and digging for belonging, where your identity is so scattered you’re just happy to be loved.”

The University Friend is ubiquitous at Harvard: for some, encountered amid the deluge of extracurricular “comp” meetings that sculpt the opening weeks of every semester; for others, discovered by chance in packed lecture halls during the biannual maelstrom of shopping week. It is important to note that the University Friend is distinct from a friend from university: the former ceases to exist when a class ends, a club is abandoned, or campus is vacated, but the latter has the potential to be everlasting.

At the nascence of our preorientation group’s friendship, we were—quite fittingly—still disoriented, and simply yearned for familiar companionship. But by October, I had ventured into Harvard’s political sphere, spending most of my spare time at the Institute of Politics. One of my friends began the process of joining The Harvard Crimson ’s news staff. Another had started to spend most of his time in the astrophysics department, near the Quad.

Soon, preorientation began to feel like a fugitive dream. We started to see each other less frequently, caring less about sending text messages to catch up or initiating meet-ups in the colossal dining hall. A few of us individually remained friends beyond the fall semester, but our original group had crumbled—and that had seemed inevitable and irreversible and surprisingly okay.

As I came to discover, I shed University Friends yearly, or more often. Typically, this happens each May, as I cram my winter clothes into cardboard boxes to store in the Adams House basement for the summer and prepare to return to the debilitating Arizona heat. It happened when, as a freshman, I decided that my Friday nights were more comfortably spent holed up in my room immersed in a book—or with a friend and a movie—than elbowing my way through throngs of strangers at a party in the Quad. It happened when I left the mock-trial team mid-year as a sophomore, renouncing weekend-long competitions in New York to stay on campus and tackle heaps of schoolwork that, despite my painstaking attention, never seemed to relent.

Shedding University Friends is a particularly pronounced phenomenon during a pandemic, when the traditional structure of the University collapses. Again, the dissolution is sometimes gradual. Perhaps there are a few FaceTime calls made, text messages exchanged, Zoom meetings scheduled in the interim, where small talk flourishes and conversations about past activities resurface to fill the void. Yet underneath, there is a feeling of imminent termination, as if without premeditated catch-up meetings at predictable, nonnegotiable intervals, the connection will fade into the ether. University Friends are not invariably present during moments of crushing distress or boundless joy because you must think twice before sending them a text message. You must script a list of topics to discuss if you are to reunite with them outside your shared activity, because the friendship won’t feel natural beyond the borders of its birthplace.

Finding a University Friend most often happens, Koul notes, when one’s identity is in disarray, such as when a semester begins. The COVID-19 pandemic has stripped students of those experiences—the feeling of disorienting wonder gleaned from walking around a bustling Harvard Square on a Saturday afternoon, from squeezing through the wooden doors of Sever Hall while jostling against hordes of fellow students during shopping week, from sitting in on an introductory computer science lecture in Sanders Theatre filled with hundreds of other undergraduates, struggling to keep up with the professor’s rapid explication of how to use Scratch.

I recently reconnected with a friend from Harvard who sent me a text for my twenty-first birthday. He suggested we catch up over FaceTime. On the call, it dawned on us that we had not spoken in nearly a year: our interactions had devolved into a semesterly meal at best. In some ways, he had become a University Friend. But there was a time when we were much closer than that.

We initially met through a high-school scholarship program and reconnected a few months later as college freshmen, through a study group for an introductory government class. That year, we participated in the campus political magazine and a consulting group I quit after a semester. Our friendship, though not entirely defined by our shared activities, was fortified by them, coupled with the disorienting wonder we both experienced as Harvard neophytes. But there were also moments that transcended those confines, like during Yardfest 2018, when we both perused readings for our respective classes in his dorm room in Matthews Hall and tried desperately—unsuccessfully—to drown out the ear-splitting noises emanating from Tercentenary Theatre. That afternoon, my friend and I didn’t need a common activity to bond; rather, we were confident our friendship could flourish even while we read for different classes in a shared space. Moments like this established him as my friend from university.

Despite the year’s hiatus, our FaceTime conversation grew to feel natural. From small talk, we eventually moved on to the books we were reading and the ideas we were pondering. I began to question the ways I had neatly boxed my various friendships into categories to avoid the disappointment of expecting too much beyond the boundaries of campus. I considered: might University Friends have the potential to become friends from university? Can a friendship that has ebbed renew itself in a manner more meaningful than rehashing shared moments of the past? Perhaps it can, I told myself—thinking of another Indian Canadian essayist, Durga Chew-Bose, and her conviction, in Too Much and Not the Mood, that “we’re all just here...finding new ways of becoming old friends.”

The pandemic has largely rendered University Friendships obsolete. During this time, friendships can no longer be purely circumstantial: it takes special effort from both parties to keep them afloat. The very process of salvaging a University Friendship may help foster its evolution into a more sincere, less contrived friendship from university.

As I spend my pandemic days indefinitely corralled in my childhood home, I am searching for ways to renew some of those University Friendships. FaceTime calls that evolve from prepared small talk to natural conversation, like the one with my friend this summer, are just a starting point. There is also something profoundly gratifying about connecting with friends while still embracing the solitude of pandemic-era living. Watching the same television shows—perhaps together, through online programs like Netflix Party—or reading the same books as a friend who lives across the country can foster a bond capable of sustaining itself outside Harvard. This summer, I read The Sympathizer at the behest of one friend and savored the television legal drama How to Get Away with Murder thanks to another friend’s recommendation. I tried flavorful salad recipes crafted by a friend from Nebraska, received uplifting postcards mailed by a classmate in New Hampshire, and listened to eclectic Spotify playlists curated by a friend in Colorado.

Some of these individuals were already friends from university with whom I was accustomed to interacting casually and frequently. But others were University Friends who reached out to me years after we took a class together or last shared a meal in the dining hall. I indulged in their suggestions: tossing salads, reading books, watching television, and listening to music in their absence. Nevertheless, I felt connected to them; each activity was inspired by their individual prompting. These activities, I realized, were a form of bonding with friends, albeit silently, and in an unusual state of solitude. And doing so offered proof that what I had long assumed was a robust, insurmountable boundary between University Friends and friends from university was, in fact, much more dynamic and permeable.

Sometimes, when I wake up and am still trying to blink the sleep out of my eyes while lying in bed, I scroll backward through the photos on my iPhone to August 16, 2017, the day I first arrived at Harvard. Dread bubbled inside me as I hoisted my pink suitcase out of my Uber and passed under the palatial Johnston Gate into the Yard, arriving hours later than the rest of my fellow preorientation participants after a red-eye, cross-country plane journey. Unable to find the check-in area amid a cluster of imposing red buildings and colorful chairs sprinkled across the Yard, I fought to keep myself from breaking down in tears. Little did I know that in just a few hours, I was going to meet the people who would become my first friends at Harvard.

The photos on my phone are a testament to my social salvation that evening. Our preorientation group sits in a circle on lush grass behind Holworthy Hall. Our hands grasp flimsy plastic cups filled to the brim with vibrantly colored boba—a drink I first found unbearably sweet but soon came to relish, largely because I sipped it so frequently in the Square with new friends. At the end of the week, we are shown with our arms wrapped around each other, posing for a final photo at the Dorchester community center where we volunteered.

That week, we became friends out of necessity, our relationships solidifying my eventual assumptions about University Friendships: namely, their seeming rigidity and evanescence. But the pandemic has shown me otherwise. As I alternately bask and wallow in my solitude, I delight in surprise texts from former section-mates and club members, asking how I am doing or recommending films and podcasts they have enjoyed. These messages, severed from Harvard and its appendages, are no longer remnants of University Friendships. They are seeds of friendships from university.

Exploring the concept of friendship, organize the material according to the traditional system.

Friendship Essay Structure

There are three important components, providing a successful work.

  • Introduction. It is to catch the audience's attention and present background information. There should be a hook, opening data, and a thesis statement.
  • Body. It is the main core of the text, consisting of 3 or more paragraphs. Each of them should be devoted to a separate aspect of friendship (for example, significance, components, benefits, or whatnot). Here the author presents topical evidence and thoughts to corroborate the thesis statement.
  • Conclusion. It is a summary of key moments of the essay. It aims to reinforce the main idea and to produce a long-lasting impression on the audience. The significance of the issue and the thesis reformulation should be included, as well.

Friendship Essay Outline

The most effective way of creating a writing project about friendship is making an outline, where you are to mention all structural components in a more detailed manner. It helps in organizing the data logically and consistently. Besides, it assists in understanding the hierarchy of the arguments and to see the connection between the parts of the work.

When making the outline, take into consideration that every friendship paragraph of the body should touch upon a separate argument. Use here topical sentences, arguments, and illustrating matters to approve them.

Conclusion

Do not include new information in this segment.

Try to be brief, compact, and determined.

Close the narration into a harmonious ornament.

Friendship: A Key Component in the Life and Longevity of College Learners

by Dr. Vivienne Friday, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE Program Director, ABSN, Goodwin University

Human beings are social animals, and friendship means having someone to rely on, listen to, or be there for in times of need. Friends desire what is best for one another and express mutual understanding and compassion. They reach out to each other for emotional support and can make mistakes without fear of judgment.

A lack of friends and social contact can bring on the emotional distress of loneliness, a cognitive awareness that affects our brain, produces feelings of sadness, emptiness, isolation, and erodes emotional well-being (Marano, 2016).

Something to look out for: the side effects of social isolation Even as restrictions begin to be lifted, the Coronavirus pandemic leaves an unfortunate legacy — as dangerous as alcoholism, obesity, or smoking. Social isolation and its side effects plague all corners of the continent — from cities to suburbs, including college campuses and virtual classrooms (Derbyshire, 2020). The fallout may be among the most significant risk factors leading to mortality. While educators typically express great concern if they know their students are using alcohol, they don’t seem to place the same significance on loneliness among students.

S ome of the daunting effects of social isolation can be offset by connecting with others. Friendships have the power to create a sense of community and to provide compassion and trust.

The struggle to connect in higher education environments Meeting a stranger and sensing something that may inspire you to invite them into your circle isn’t always easy. Students enter colleges and universities from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Traditional-age learners start right out of high school; others may be experiencing transitions in their careers; still others enroll in higher education after raising a family. As they pursue their degrees, adjustments to new circumstances — struggling to make friends, finding their way in a new environment, integrating into classroom and campus cultures — can result in a shift in social connection.

Such shifts often result in a distancing from old friendships and needing to create new ones. A report by Fisher in 2012 showed that more than one in three exchange students reported having no close U.S. friends. Many students from abroad struggle to integrate into American classroom and campuses. Living away from one’s support system can leave students without a compassionate person to turn to for advice, leaving them lonely and socially disconnected in large learning group settings (Worsley, Harrison, & Corcoran, 2021). As social beings, we have a fundamental need to be included and to have close relationships; and such an absence can be unnatural for any individual.

Students may find it easier to develop friends in face-to-face learning environments than in the virtual or online settings brought about by the pandemic. With fewer contacts and less personal interaction, opportunities for new students to make friends or maintain existing friendships may be challenging. A survey of college students during the pandemic confirmed that 60% of students experienced loneliness and isolation (Covid-19 Impact, 2021).

Engaging students from experience As immigrants to the United States, my family and I began a new life in an unfamiliar world, having left friends and family behind. When I enrolled in a university to complete a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, I became acutely aware of how difficult it was to form new friendships. Most students had already formed their circles through work or previous educational settings. Others communicated in subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) behaviors that outsiders were not welcome in their respective circles.

Since friendship is a reciprocal gesture, I took the initiative to reach out to individuals I observed to be similarly isolated and we formed friends that I still maintain today.

College is a unique and often once-in-a-lifetime experience and should be enjoyed to the fullest. Supportive interactions with peers can influence overall academic development, knowledge acquisition, and self-esteem. Having valuable college friendships during your undergraduate or graduate career can also result in improved social life, a successful, satisfying education, and sought-after career opportunities. Emotion plays a pivotal role in the educational experience. Faculty and staff can help students formulate friendships by creating a community culture — physically and virtually.

The benefits of bonding Postsecondary education professionals must ensure that students have inclusive spaces that are psychologically safe. Faculty and staff can also find solutions in togetherness — teaching the curricula as their authentic selves and inviting students to search within and support the same sentiments.

Encouraging educational experiences that foster friendships can include:

  • Collaborating with others on group assignments
  • Discussing opinions on course content with other students
  • Socializing with someone from a different ethnic or racial group

A culture of friendship is fostered when students engage in activities that bring them together. Faculty can help students develop friendships by cultivating a culture of connection and modeling friendly behaviors such as:

  • Identifying self to other students and allowing them to reciprocate
  • Using open-ended questions to obtain information about each other while maintaining eye contact and smiling
  • Assigning pairs or small groups to work on classroom projects to develop bonds with other students
  • Acknowledging and celebrating everyday experiences such as birthdays to encourage social interaction
  • Offering support during difficult circumstances and extending encouragement to each other

Connecting cohorts and classmates A culture of friendship can be fostered when faculty compliment students on admirable qualities and provide opportunities for students to acknowledge commendable attributes in others. Permitting students to complete guided peer evaluations of group projects creates an atmosphere to recognize peers’ strengths and realize the benefits of working in the group. Students can then develop friendships with group members if the interactions are positive.

Faculty can further enhance this process by guiding connectivity within the groups. For example, establish ground rules that support caring, respect for peers, a focus on the feelings and experiences of self and others, support for peers during group work or discussion, and the need to engage in healthy interaction that fosters learning. A supportive environment fosters a sense of belonging and community. Therefore, universities should ensure that students feel supported by staff and peers while acclimatizing to multiple new challenges (Worsley, Harrison, & Corcoran, 2021).

Friendship is essential for mental, physical, and social well-being. College students, especially those from abroad, may be friendless. However, if faculty, staff, and institutions implement these strategies to help students develop, meaningful friendships will form, and students will flourish in the higher education setting.

📝 Friendship Essay Structure

🏆 best friendship topic ideas & essay examples, 💡 good essay topics on friendship, 🎓 simple & easy friendship essay titles, 📌 most interesting friendship topics to write about, ❓ research questions about friendship.

Describing a friend, talking about your relationship and life experiences can be quite fun! So, take a look at our topics on friendship in the list below. Our experts have gathered numerous ideas that can be extremely helpful for you. And don’t forget to check our friendship essay examples via the links.

Writing a friendship essay is an excellent way to reflect on your relationships with other people, show your appreciation for your friends, and explore what friendship means to you. What you include in your paper is entirely up to you, but this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t structure it properly. Here is our advice on structuring an essay on friendship:

  • Begin by selecting the right topic. It should be focused and creative so that you can earn a high mark. Think about what friendship means to you and write down your thoughts. Reflect on your relationship with your best friend and see if you can write an essay that incorporates these themes. If these steps didn’t help – don’t worry! Fortunately, there are many web resources that can help you choose. Browse samples of friendship essays online to see if there are any topics that interest you.
  • Create a title that reflects your focus. Paper titles are important because they grasp the reader’s attention and make them want to read further. However, many people find it challenging to name their work, so you can search for friendship essay titles online if you need to.
  • Once you get the first two steps right, you can start developing the structure of your essay. An outline is a great tool because it presents your ideas in a clear and concise manner and ensures that there are no gaps or irrelevant points. The most basic essay outline has three components: introduction, body, and conclusion. Type these out and move to the next step. Compose an introduction. Your introduction should include a hook, some background information, and a thesis. A friendship essay hook is the first sentence in the introduction, where you draw the reader’s attention. For instance, if you are creating an essay on value of friendship, include a brief description of a situation where your friends helped you or something else that comes to mind. A hook should make the reader want to read the rest of the essay. After the hook, include some background information on your chosen theme and write down a thesis. A thesis statement is the final sentence of the first paragraph that consists of your main argument.
  • Write well-structured body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should start with one key point, which is then developed through examples, references to resources, or other content. Make sure that each of the key points relates to your thesis. It might be useful to write out all of your key points first before you write the main body of the paper. This will help you to see if any of them are irrelevant or need to be swapped to establish a logical sequence. If you are composing an essay on the importance of friendship, each point should show how a good friend can make life better and more enjoyable. End each paragraph with a concluding sentence that links it to the next part of the paper.
  • Finally, compose a conclusion. A friendship essay conclusion should tie together all your points and show how they support your thesis. For this purpose, you should restate your thesis statement at the beginning of the final paragraph. This will offer your reader a nice, well-balanced closure, leaving a good impression of your work.

We hope that this post has assisted you in understanding the basic structure of a friendship paper. Don’t forget to browse our website for sample papers, essay titles, and other resources!

Friendship Sample Essay in 200 words

Friendship is something exceptional. Whenever life gets rough, one thing that we can always rely on is our friendship. We know that we have our friends to support us through the tough times in life. Not only that, friendship is such a deep-rooted emotion that even when we don’t share what we are feeling at the same moment, just by looking at our faces, our friends can figure out that something is bothering us. And they, just by having a thoughtful talk with us, have the strength to make all the bothering go away in a snap. Such is the power of friendship. It’s more than meets the eye. However, there are times when we have those life tests that make us reach our limits and test us through thick and thin.

Everything in life isn’t always smooth and happy, there are phases when even friends get into a fight with each other, but when they come out of that situation with their friendship still intact, then that bonding reaches new heights of strength.

If you have deep friendships with people, always be grateful to god for that, because not every bond of friendship lasts forever. Those people who have friends who last a lifetime are truly blessed because friendship truly is beautiful.

In this vast world, there are innumerable people we meet every day, yet we still meet people who are there with us for a lifetime. The term for those people is “Friends” and the emotion that sustains them is “friendship”. The word friendship may have a particular number of alphabets, but the meaning it conveys cannot be measured in numbers. The word “friendship” is more than meets the eye. The depth it holds in terms of emotions, bonding, trust, understanding, support, communication, and much more is unparalleled. At every phase of our lives, we come across people and don’t even realize the bonds that get forged with time. These bonds are filled with the spirit and essence of trust, honesty, support, etc. hence becoming the pillars of friendship.

In every person’s life, friendship plays different roles but one thing that every person can agree on without a doubt is that friendship sustains you. Now, there are basically 2 types of friends, first ones are those who are good friends while the other ones are best friends. The best friends are the ones that we share a special bond of affection and love with. They make our lives much richer and easier

In true friendship, there is no place for judgment. True friends can share anything they are feeling without the fear of being judged by the other. To put it simply, we can say that true friendship gives us a reason to become even stronger in life.

Friendship makes us stronger in all aspects. No matter how much we fight our friends, we always come back to them. This is what teaches us the virtue of understanding and being patient. Without an iota of doubt, we can conclude that there is nothing out there that is nearly as beautiful, and as strong as friendship. Lucky are those who have this blessing in their life. Forever cherish it.

True friendship is one where there is mutual respect, good communication, honesty, and trust. When you know that no matter what, you can rely on your friend and that friend has got your back in every situation.

The full form of “FRIEND” is” Few Relations In Earth Never Die”.

It seems easy to write. You craft a narrative about your mates, explaining what they mean to you. And yet, it’s an academic paper. So, some rules are still here on how to structure and format it.

In this article, you’ll find three samples of different essays on friendship. Feel free to use them to get inspired and better understand this paper’s nature and purpose.

Let’s answer all the questions related to friendship essays together!

What Is an Essay on Friendship?

First, the definition:

An essay on friendship is a short academic paper students write to express their thoughts and reflections on the topic.

The purpose is to:

  • explore the phenomenon;
  • understand what it means to you;
  • realize the significance of having close people nearby;
  • reveal the pros and cons of committing to a friendship;
  • reflect on how friendship can help our wellness.

Friendship Essay Structure

friendship-essay-structure

Friendship essays have a standard structure of academic papers. They are short and consist of three parts:

  • Introduction about friendship
  • Paragraph about friendship
  • Friendship essay conclusion

In the intro, you start with an attention grabber. Feel free to use a quote, a surprising fact, or an anecdote. Introduce the topic and finish with thesis statements about friendship.

In a friendship paragraph, you support a thesis with facts, evidence, personal stories, etc. As a rule, essay bodies have three paragraphs minimum. So you can devote each paragraph to one aspect :

  • Definition of this concept
  • Why having friends is essential
  • What a friend can give you
  • Types of friendship
  • Challenges mates meet on their way
  • Characteristics of a good friend
  • How to strengthen a friendship, etc.

In the essay body, you can use stories and examples from your life to illustrate points. Tell about your friends and share personal thoughts — it will make your paper more compelling to read.

In the concluding paragraph, sum up the points and restate your thesis. Finish on a positive note, leaving readers with the food for thought.

Easier said than done, huh?

  • Provide a thesis statement that summarizes the main points of the essay

university friends essay

Do you remember the first friend you made?

The first person I consciously remember calling my “friend” (and later, “best friend”) was someone I met in preschool. I was probably four years old. We had similar interests, and complementary personalities (he was the big picture idea guy, I was the detail-oriented do-er).

As I’ve continued through life, my friendships have shifted . I’ve made new friends along the way, deepened my relationship with existing friends, and fallen out of touch with others. When you look at it this way, it seems like friendship is something that just “happens. ” You can’t control it, it would seem, and maybe it’s better not to. After all, you can’t force friendship.

Yet, what I’ve come to realize in the past couple years is that while you can’t force or manufacture friendship, you can   seek and cultivate it . It isn’t completely out of your control. In fact, since it’s such an important part of living a happy life, it’s something that you put on autopilot at your peril.

“Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.” – C.S. Lewis

One of the best things about college is all the opportunities it gives you to start fresh . This is especially the case with friends. You’re in a new place surrounded by literally thousands of people you’ve never met before. All of these people are potential friends . You just have to seek them out.

Which can be overwhelming.

People rushing by

That’s why I put this article together. I want to help you turn your feeling of overwhelm into a feeling of opportunity and excitement. Excitement at the insane number of opportunities you have to make new friends while in college. Whether it’s your first semester or your final semester, this article will show you how to make new friends and deepen existing friendships in college and beyond.

Let’s get friendly!

No longer in college? Learn how to make friends as an adult .

Why You Have the Friends You Do

Swings

Where did you make your first friends? For most people, the answer fits into one of two categories:

  • Your school
  • Your neighborhood

What do these two areas have in common? They’re where you spent most of your time as a kid. So the reason you had the friends you had was quite simply that you spent lots of time repeatedly interacting with them.

Now, there are some important caveats. I’m not saying that geography determines all. Shared interests and personality play a very important role as well. You were obviously drawn more to some people than others. Perhaps you admired how outgoing the other person was, while they were drawn to your calmness. Perhaps you both liked trading Pokémon cards, or both preferred recess over story time.

Library books

Still, the influence of where you spent the most time and whom you spent it with is strong.

This continues later in life, too. My best friends from high school were people that I knew from the following places:

  • Marching band
  • Honors classes
  • Often two of the above, or in some cases all three (!)

Once more, the key factor was spending lots of time together doing shared activities, activities that reflected at least some sort of shared interest or value. People join marching band for lots of different reasons, for instance, but most of them are bound to share at least a couple of those reasons in common.

This information can tell us a lot about how to actively  make friends, and that’s what we’ll cover next.

How to Make Friends with Intention

“If you go looking for a friend, you’re going to find they’re very scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere.” – Zig Ziglar

Now that we’ve covered why we have the friends we do, let’s go out and find some. I know this may seem kind of weird. After all, friendship is one of those things society tells us should just happen naturally . Actively seeking friendship can seem unnatural.

I think, however, that being intentional about your relationships is one of the keys to a happy life. Unlike your family, you have control over who your friends are. It makes sense, then, to be deliberate in choosing friends. Actively seeking out friends means you’re more likely to have people around you who energize you, make you laugh, and support you during difficult times.

Now that we’ve established the importance of being intentional about who your friends are, we can move on to the how part. I’ve broken this next part into three sections to make it easier to navigate and review later.

So let’s get to the first part: where to find friends.

Part 1: 9  Places to Find Friends in College

“You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.” – Dale Carnegie

Something that I’ve struggled with in the past is where exactly I should go to meet potential friends. This might seem obvious to some people. But if you’re an introvert like me, it can be helpful to have a defined list of places, as it takes some of the mystery and worry out of potential interactions.

Even if you’re a very social person, you may not have realized all the possible places that you can go to meet people in college. It’s pretty ridiculous when you think about it, especially if you go to a larger school.

So here are nine places to find friends in college . This isn’t a complete list, but it’s a great place to get started. If you think of other places I missed, please share them in the comments.

1. Campus Events

Thomas is fond of saying that college is a lot like a four year TED or SXSW conference. Nowhere is this clearer than in campus events. Here are just a few of the types of events that were common at my college:

  • Guest speakers
  • Karaoke nights
  • Charity 5Ks
  • Free craft nights
  • Classical music concerts
  • Music festivals
  • Quidditch matches
  • Themed dances (with free food!)
  • Global Nomad socials

Campus events are a great place to meet people. They give you an automatic talking point (especially if it’s something like a speaker), and they run the gamut of comfort levels for introverts and extroverts.

Facebook has made it easier than ever to learn about these events. What’s more, you can always check out the dozens of posters advertising them around campus. The real challenge is choosing which ones to go to, as there’s likely something every night of the week.

Bonus Tip:  Many events (especially those with guest speakers) have a reception before or after. These are great places to strike up a conversation.

2. Campus Organizations

Campus organizations might be the best place to make friends. This is simply because there are so many of them. Whether it’s an intramural sport, a social cause, a recreational activity, a musical pursuit, or a career aspiration, there’s probably a club for it.

Clubs have all the benefits of campus events with the added bonus that they meet regularly. This gives you a chance to have repeated interactions with the same people, which is an important ingredient in forming friendships.

Caveat:  Pick your campus organizations carefully. It’s fine to try out a bunch of different clubs at the beginning of the semester, but it’s better in the long run for both your social life and your stress levels to commit to 2-3 clubs that you really enjoy and care about.

Man playing saxophone like a boss

It’s also worth noting that some clubs are better for forming friendships than others . Clubs that are highly structured, such as a musical group or campus council, often leave little room to actually talk and get to know each other.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t join more structured clubs (I was in several musical groups throughout college), but it can make it a little trickier to make friends than less structured organizations such as a philosophy discussion group or a running club.

There are 168 hours in a week. Assuming that you spend 8 hours a night getting excellent sleep , that leaves you with 112 waking hours. You probably spend around 12-15 hours in class each week, which works out to 10.71% – 13.39% of the time you’re awake. This represents a great opportunity to make friends.

As with clubs, some classes work better than others for making friends. Classes that have labs or group projects , annoying as they may be, tend to work better since they give you more time to talk than a class that’s just straight up lecture.

Classes also enjoy the obvious benefit of some sort of shared interest (or at least shared obligation, if it’s a gen ed/required class).

4. Your Dorm

If you’re not in class, then odds are you’re in your dorm . Especially if it’s your first year of college. The food may be gross, and the decor may look like it was lifted from Doom , but one thing dorms do have going for them is that they’re a great place to make friends. Even if it’s just bonding over shared adversity.

Seriously, though, dorms are great because of all the spontaneous social interaction they invite. Whether it’s hanging out in the common area doing homework, brushing your teeth in the community bathroom, or staging an impromptu hallway Nerf battle at 2 am on a Tuesday, it’s a fertile ground for friendships to develop.

Of course, the above also applies in other living situations. Sharing a house with semi-random people was where I made some of my best friends in college. Even if you’re renting an apartment  off campus, you can still make an effort to get to know your neighbors.

5. Informal Hangouts

This is a pretty broad category, including everything from big house parties to dorm lounge smash tournaments. Often these begin with a casual text like, “Hey, we should all hang out tonight.” Where things go from there is anyone’s guess.

What’s great about informal hangouts is that they allow for lots of time to actually talk and get to know people. (Okay, this may not be true if it’s a wall-to-wall frat party blaring Kanye, but you get the idea).

They’re also, well, informal, so if things get awkward it’s easy to just leave. These sorts of hangouts are also great for cultivating existing friendships (more on that below).

6. Around Campus

People often overlook this, but if you keep an open mind you can meet some really cool people this way.

Basically, this is everywhere that’s not class. Some examples include:

  • The gym (if you’re both working out, then that’s clearly a shared interest).
  • The student center (great for people watching, but also a nice place to strike up casual conversations)
  • Waiting in the hall (whether it’s before class or a meeting with a professor or whatever)
  • Walking around campus (obviously don’t be creepy, but if you happen to be walking the same way as someone or to the same location, that’s a nice conversation starter)

This is probably on the more “advanced” level of making friends, as it requires you to initiate conversations with strangers. But it’s a great way to overcome shyness and increase your confidence .

This can take different forms, but the most obvious is any Facebook groups associated with your class or school. I didn’t do this a ton myself, but I knew people who made friends just through being active in the class Facebook group before the semester even started.

This is a great way to go if, like me, you come across more eloquently in writing than you do in person.

Just don’t be one of those people who spams the group–not cool.

8. Internships and Research Assistantships

Plants growing in a research lab

We’re big fans of internships here at College Info Geek. Not only do they look great on resumes and give you real work experience to talk about in job interviews, but they’re also a superb way to make friends .

For example, when I spent seven weeks living on campus as a summer research assistant , I had the chance to make several new friends. The campus was nearly empty, and that made it feel a lot more manageable. I lived in a dorm with maybe 200 other students, and I ran into a lot of the same people while cooking dinner or doing laundry.

Once again, this sort of experience provides a great common ground for conversations . Even things as simple as, “So what sort of research are you doing this summer?” or “How did you find this internship?” can be the openings of meaningful relationships.

9. Campus Jobs

In the “professional world,” people often talk about having “work friends.” But this isn’t something that requires you to have a full-time job to take advantage of. Besides the time management and obvious monetary benefits, campus jobs  are a cool way to meet people.

When I worked in the campus post office, for instance, I had the chance to chat with the same several people six days a week. I’ll admit I didn’t use this opportunity as well as I could have, but looking back it was an excellent place to meet people. This is an even better strategy if it’s a job with a lot of downtime such as working reception.

Having trouble remembering the names of all the new people you’re meeting? This guide will help .

Part 2: How to Go from Acquaintance to Friend

“Ultimately the bond of all companionship, whether in marriage or in friendship, is conversation.” – Oscar Wilde

So you’ve gone out to some of the places above, and you’ve met some people. Ideally, you’ve chosen a place where you can encounter some of the same people over and over in order to build rapport. Maybe you’ve even exchanged phone numbers or added each other on Facebook.

Now that you have these “weak ties” (to use a term from  sociologist Mark S. Granovetter ), how do you take the relationship to a deeper level? How do you go from acquaintance to friend?

The answer, it turns out, is simple. Not necessarily easy , but definitely simple. What’s the “secret”? One-on-one time.

Hanging out in a group is lots of fun, but it can be difficult to spend enough time talking with one person to really open up to each other and get beyond surface level conversation. The best way to go from acquaintance to friend is to spend quality time talking and/or doing an activity together.

Girl sitting with a latte

To make this easier, I suggest that you focus on cultivating one or two relationships at a time. Going out and meeting lots of people is a good idea to keep your social skills honed and broaden your network, but when it comes to making friends it’s best to keep it small. Especially if you’re more introverted and find social interactions draining.

Like dating, it’s also best to keep things casual at first. Message the person and suggest meeting for coffee or (cheap) lunch. These settings are great because they’re low pressure and allow for easy escape if the conversation gets stale.

Or if you want more structure, then suggest an activity you both would enjoy, ideally one that’s not too intense. That is, going for a walk in a local park is probably better than suggesting the two of you hike the Appalachian Trail.

Tip:  Pick an activity where you can actually talk to each other. So eating a meal together is better than seeing a movie, for example.

If things are going well, then you may be ready to take things to the “next level,” which we’ll cover in the following section.

Part 3: How to Deepen and Cultivate Friendships

“A friend is a person with whom I may be sincere.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Let’s say that you’ve gone through Part 2, and you now would definitely call yourselves friends. How do you maintain this friendship, and how do you take it to a deeper place?

Maintaining the friendship is similar to the above section. Just keep in touch and do things together regularly. Pretty simple (though it can take some effort, especially when your life gets busy).

As for deepening a friendship, the key in my experience (and from people who are far more qualified ), is vulnerability.

This video from The School of Life sums up the concept nicely:

When people complain about “shallow” conversation, they’re usually getting at a deeper lack of vulnerability . They’re getting at, as the video explains, people trying to seem impressive instead of revealing what they’re really like, how they really feel.

Vulnerability isn’t easy. As Brené Brown puts in her TED talk “The Power of Vulnerability”:

“…in order for connection to happen, we have to allow ourselves to be seen, really seen.”

This can be painful. And risky. But also tremendously rewarding. Have a look at this article for some practical ways to be more vulnerable.

Bonus Round: Common Questions and Miscellaneous Tips

“Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose.” – Tennessee Williams

Before we wrap up, I want to address a couple common questions students have about friendship, as well as include some miscellaneous advice that didn’t fit elsewhere in the article.

1. How do I stay in touch with my friends from high school when I’m in college?

This is a tricky one, and it depends on your circumstances. If you go to college in the town where most of your high school friends still live, it’s just a matter of meeting regularly.

If, however, you and your friends are scattered all across the country at different colleges, as it was for me, then you have to be more deliberate . My high school friends and I have always made a point of getting together during breaks to go to trivia, have parties, and even take summer road trips . And, of course, text, call, and FaceTime regularly.

People skateboarding together

That being said, you should also expect that you’ll drift apart from some of your high school friends.  People change a lot after high school. The gap between “life stages” widens, or is at least more visible than it was before college. This can be uncomfortable, but it’s bound to happen.

On the other hand, if you were unsatisfied with the friendships you had in high school, college is a great place to start fresh. Obviously don’t be a jerk, but don’t feel like you have an obligation to remain friends with people just because you hung out with them in high school. That’s the sunk cost fallacy at work.

2. None of my friends ever want to do anything. What should I do?

This one’s simple: Become the organizer . Take an active role in planning things for all of you to do. It took me far too much of college to realize the power of this approach.

Because generally it’s not that your friends don’t want to hang out. They’re just in the same position as you, looking for someone to nudge them toward an activity. Don’t be part of the inertia; be the one who moves things along.

3. Advice: Branch out from your initial friend group

Coming into college, it’s normal to make friends with the first people you meet and click with. There’s nothing wrong with this (I’m still friends with some people I met at my college orientation).

But I would encourage you not to feel like those people are the only ones you can ever be friends with. Go to some of the places I suggested above and try to branch out. Join a new club, take a class that’s outside your area of expertise, or strike up a conversation with a coworker.

The result is likely to be a richer life and an expanded social circle.

Get Out and Make Some Friends

“Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.” – Anaïs Nin

This article covered a lot of ground. As with any kind of advice, however, it’s useless if you don’t apply it . At the end of the day, the best advice I can give for making friends is to  make it a priority . Once you’ve achieved that mindset shift, your job is to get out there and make it happen.

So today, I’d like to challenge you to apply just one piece of advice from this article . Try looking in a new place for friends. Invite an acquaintance out for coffee. Practice vulnerability with an existing friend.

If you take even one of these steps, you’ll be on your way to a happier, more fulfilling life.

Friendship Essay: Writing Guide & Topics on Friendship [New]

Assigned with an essay about friendship? Congrats! It’s one of the best tasks you could get. Digging through your memories and finding strong arguments for this paper can be an enjoyable experience.

I bet you will cope with this task effortlessly as we can help you with the assignment. Just use the essay topics on friendship and tips described below.

  • 🖊️ Writing Guide
  • 💡 50 Essay Topics
  • 💬 10 Witty Quotes

1. 🖊️ Friendship Essay: Writing Guide

If you’ve been given to write an essay about friendship, then you have accepted one of the best tasks. It can be challenging as it requires recollecting the memories associated with the friend. Also, it requires following a particular guideline.

  • Choose a topic

To start writing an essay on friendship, you need to choose a good topic. There are several things you need to keep in mind:

  • When writing an essay about friendship, make sure the topic you choose corresponds to the type of the paper (e.g., opinion or narrative essay );
  • The topic you choose needs to be enough to develop it in the essay. If your idea is too broad, you will not describe it sufficiently. If it’s too narrow, you will not have enough information to write about.
  • Find evidence

Research your topic. Use the available sources for searching for information, such as books, dictionaries, and internet sources. Find enough data to support your argument. Also, think about life experiences that can be used under this topic. An essay on friendship usually requires using personal examples as evidence.

  • Outline your essay

Think about the information you will include in different parts of the essay. Usually, such papers consist of an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Introduction : A paragraph that includes any necessary background information and a thesis statement .

Body Paragraphs : Generally, essays include three separate body paragraphs. They present arguments and additional support individually.

Conclusion : The last paragraph that summarizes major points and restates the thesis statement.

  • Write and proofread

As you have your topic and outline ready, start writing your friendship essay. When you finish, carefully proofread. Double-check your spelling, the accuracy of the information, and grammar. Make sure to format your essay according to the guidelines.

Ask someone to help you revise the text: a person might notice mistakes you didn’t see. Another great way to revise your paper is by checking friendship essay examples to get inspired and see what you can improve in your writing.

2. ⛔ Essay on Friendship: 5 No-Nos

Writing an essay about friendship can seem less challenging than composing a paper on some uncommon topic. Yet, there are still mistakes that a student can make.

Check the following five taboos that you should avoid:

  • Avoid complaining. Some students use this task as their chance to complain about someone having betrayed them. Bad things happen. Move on and find better ideas to include in your friendship essay.
  • Avoid flattering. Another extreme to be avoided is singing the praises to someone. Even if you badly want to include something like ‘I was blessed to meet Tom who was my best friend ever,’ try to refrain from writing just that and add more exciting details instead to create some context and let your readers know exactly why and how was Tom such a great friend to you.
  • Don’t add too much drama. Focusing on how you can’t imagine your life without your friends from school you left is a bad idea.
  • Don’t be too negative. Sure, you are free to defend any position in this paper. Yet, teachers would like it better if your essay is optimistic (and you might be happier writing it too).
  • Don’t forget to include examples. Examples from your personal life and books will make your paper more sincere and persuasive.

3. 💡 50 Essay Topics on Friendship

Any excellent essay starts with an idea that you can explore in detail. We’ve prepared 50 writing prompts and topics to help you pick the perfect theme for your paper:

  • Three kinds of friendships, according to Aristotle. The philosopher pointed out that there are three different types of friendship: the friendship of utility, the friendship of pleasure, and virtuous friendship. Which one resonates with you? Why?
  • Qualities of a true friend. People like seeing such character traits as loyalty, trustworthiness, and honesty in a best friend. But do all good friends have these qualities? Think of what makes a good friend. Describe the characteristics you like seeing in a person.
  • Is friendship relatable to love and vice versa? It’s suggested that any bond can develop into a romantic relationship. But, can romantic relationships transform into friendship? Write your opinion on the topic.
  • The similarity of interests vs. compatibility of temperaments . Both are equally important in any relationship, and you can discuss this. Do you think that any of the factors play a more influential role in friendship? Why?
  • A friend to everyone is a friend to no one. How do you understand that phrase? Can such people be true friends?

  • The most significant aspects of a friendship. Some people appreciate confidentiality or respect the most in a company. Name and describe the elements you appreciate in friendship.
  • An unexpected friendship. We all know that one person we didn’t like from the start but later became best friends. How did you meet them? What was your first impression? Are you still best friends?
  • Friendship is a treasure. Do you think every person needs a true friend? Can friends be compared to treasures? Are real friends as hard to find as gold?

Importance of Friendship Essay Outline

Introduction.

Thesis: Friendship brings people together in a bond that helps them realize and experience a meaningful life.

Paragraph 1:

A good friend is always available irrespective of the circumstances.

  • A true friend cares for their friends, accepts them unconditionally, tolerates their shortcomings, and encourages them even in the face of hopelessness.
  • A loyal friend makes one to be who they are without fearing victimization or judgment.
  • A good friend can know one more than one knows themselves.
  • A friend can tell one without fear what one does not want to tell oneself.

Paragraph 2:

Friendship is like a partnership since it brings two people together on equal terms that are binding to both of them.

  • Friends give their all and love each other unconditionally and do even more so as to sustain it.
  • The ugly, the bad, and the good should be endured in friendship.
  • A good friend brings out the best in someone.
  • A person in friendship expects their initiatives to be attended to even when they are down with illness.

Paragraph 3:

Friendship can be compared to family and can even do more than a family could do for a person.

  • Sometimes, the friends one has are the family they wish they had or the family they find easier to deal with as compared to their blood family.
  • One’s blood family may ignore, ridicule, judge, or even misunderstand them.
  • One may get from their friends that which they do not get from their family.
  • A true family is not linked by the bond of blood but the bond of joy and respect in each other’s life.

Paragraph 4:

“A friend in need is a friend in deed” is an old cliché that speaks about true friendship.

  • It essentially means that a true friend will always help in times of need.
  • I fully understood the meaning of this saying when a classmate friend of mine once handed in my takeaway assignment in my absence.

Friendship brings people together to form a greater and stronger whole than its individual parts. Friends act and react in ways that show that they love and care for each other.

Importance of Friendship Essay Example

Almost every human being has friends or at least a friend with whom they spend time together. Friendship is about knowing someone better than others do and counting on them whenever the need arises. A friend is like a gift that one gives oneself. It is doubtless that out of friendship, one lives the fullness of life. Some of the qualities that are expected from friendship include trust, honesty, and authenticity. These are qualities that are majorly concerned with remaining true to a friend and providing them a shoulder to lean on all the time. Friendship brings people together in a bond that helps them realize and experience a meaningful life. Gudwriter offers two paragraph essay examples from any topic.

A good friend is always available irrespective of the circumstances. A true friend cares for their friends, accepts them unconditionally, tolerates their shortcomings, and encourages them even in the face of hopelessness. Even at that moment when everyone decides to walk away from a person for whatever reason(s), their true friend would walk in and be with them and support them. With a loyal friend, one can be who they are without fearing victimization or judgment because they know the friend fully understands them. A good friend can as a matter of fact know one more than one knows themselves. In addition, a friend can tell one without fear what one does not want to tell oneself. If one is on a wrong path, the friend would tell them as soon as they notice it.

Additionally, friendship is like a partnership since it brings two people together on equal terms that are binding to both of them. They give their all and love each other unconditionally and do even more so as to sustain it. In a friendship, there should be expected to be the ugly, the bad, and the good, all of which should be endured. A good friend brings out the best in someone by encouraging them and prevailing upon them to make the best out of their abilities and strengths. Just like in a business partnership, a person in friendship would expect their initiatives to be attended to even when they are down with illness. This is why it could be true to say that life is partly what one makes it and partly what the friends they choose make it.

Friendship can also be compared to family and can even do more than a family could do for a person. Sometimes, the friends one has are the family they wish they had or the family they find easier to deal with as compared to their blood family. One’s blood family may ignore, ridicule, judge, or even misunderstand them. In such a case, they would get from their friends that which they do not get from their family. However, in the best case scenario, friendship can also develop between or among family members. Normally, a true family is not linked by the bond of blood but the bond of joy and respect in each other’s life. One should consider a good friend of theirs as their greatest relation because just one loyal friend is more than a thousand relatives.

“ A friend in need is a friend in deed ” is an old cliché that speaks about true friendship. It essentially means that a true friend will always help in times of need. I never really gave much weight to this saying until I once had to rely on a friend and classmate for an important favor. I had missed school due to an unavoidable circumstance on a day everyone in the class was to hand in their final takeaway assignment in print format. I tried calling people I had thought were my friends among my classmates but none was willing to help. When I was just about to give up, Jasmine, a classmate who was not so close a friend, called and asked me to email her my assignment. I later learnt she downloaded the assignment, printed it, and handed it in together with hers. From then, I am careful about people I treat as friends.

Friendship brings people together to form a greater and stronger whole than its individual parts. Friends act and react in ways that show that they not only love each other but care for them too. It is akin to striking a partnership in which one partner is always there for the other partner in his or her absence. Friends broaden each other’s horizon by opening new doors for each other. They seek to soar beyond limits as a single determined force. Indeed, friendship guarantees one a meaningful and fulfilling life.

Valley students share their future goals as education essay competition kicks off

university friends essay

PHOENIX — September marks the beginning of college savings month in Arizona. Arizona’s state treasurer Kimberly Yee is kicking it off with an essay competition asking students to write about their dream jobs.

Twenty winners from all across Arizona will get $529 for their AZ529 account.

At the Boys and Girls Club of the Valley, there are a lot of kids with big dreams.

“I want to be a volleyball coach and a teacher of either math or ELA," sixth grader Bellamar Scott-Ramos said.

“I want to be a soccer player and a lawyer. Because I’m good at arguing," Charles Strand-Flores said.

To achieve those goals, these fifth and sixth graders want to pursue a college degree.

Treasurer Yee is telling them about the essay contest they can submit to so they can get a jump start.

“It’s a very short paragraph you need to write about what you want to be when you grow up," Yee said. "That will give you a chance to submit it and give you a chance to win $529 for your future education.”

Yee is trying to reach as many kids and parents as possible, heading across the state again to promote the contest and the savings plan.

“We have seen so much growth in this program. In just 46 months, we have seen 44,500 new families sign up for an education savings plan," Yee said.

Strand-Flores says he plans to take what he learned today and start saving.

“If you save, you have it when you need it. And when you have a lot, you can give it to other people.”

Yee adds if your child eventually decides college isn’t for them, the saved money can be spent on other types of education like vocational schools, trade programs, and workforce development.

The essay contest runs through October 6 and submissions can be made online. Learn more here.

I’m a College President, and I Hope My Campus Is Even More Political This Year

A blue plastic drinking cup and a red ping pong ball sit next to a red plastic drinking cup and a blue ping pong ball.

By Michael S. Roth

Mr. Roth is the president of Wesleyan University.

Last year was a tough one on college campuses, so over the summer a lot of people asked me if I was hoping things would be less political this fall. Actually, I’m hoping they will be more political.

That’s not to say that I yearn for entrenched conflict or to once again hear chants telling me that I “can’t hide from genocide,” much less anything that might devolve into antisemitic or Islamophobic harassment or violence. But since at least the 1800s, colleges and universities in the United States have sought to help students develop character traits that would make them better citizens. That civic mission is only more relevant today. The last thing any university president should want is an apolitical campus.

College students have long played an important, even heroic role in American politics. Having defended the voting franchise during the civil rights movement and helped to end the Vietnam War, they have continued to work for change across a range of social issues. If you went to college in the past 50 years, there’s a good chance the mission statement of your school included language that emphasized the institution’s contribution to society. Like many others, my university’s founding documents speak of contributing to the good of the individual and the good of the world. Higher-education institutions have never been neutral .

The issue that matters most to many activists right now is the war in Gaza, and protesters will undoubtedly continue to make their voices heard. Last spring at Wesleyan, students built an encampment of up to about 100 tents to protest the war and to call for the university to divest from companies thought to be supporting it. Since the protest was nonviolent and the students in the encampment were careful not to disrupt normal university operations, we allowed it to continue because their right to nonviolent protest was more important than their modest violations of the rules.

I walked through the protest area daily, as did many faculty members, students and staff members. I also met with pro-Israel students, mostly Jewish, some of whom felt beleaguered by what their classmates were saying. I made clear that if any of them felt harassed, I would intervene. I also said that I could ensure their ability to pursue their education but that I could not protect them from being offended.

I disagreed with the protesters ’ tactics and some of their aims — and I was often the target of their anger — but I respected their strong desire to bear witness to the tragedy unfolding in Gaza. Before commencement, we reached an agreement with the students that they would clear the encampment and in turn be able to make their case to the board of trustees. They will do so this fall, as will pro-Israel students. I trust the experience will be a valuable lesson in how to communicate with people who may not share your views.

Published september 2, 2024 • updated on september 2, 2024 at 7:10 pm.

Friends and family are remembering a suburban college student who was shot and killed near the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Friday.

According to authorities, 21-year-old Kara Welsh, who was also a decorated gymnast after a remarkable career in suburban Plainfield, was killed following an altercation at an apartment on Friday night.

As the investigation continues, a vigil was held honoring her in Plainfield.

“I just miss her already, and can’t believe that she’s gone,” childhood friend Nicole Conrad said.

Friends and neighbors tied ribbons on trees, and dropped off flowers and balloons at the house where Welsh grew up.

“She was always just the light in the room,” Conrad said. “She always knew how to make people laugh.”

Tessani Foster, a former gymnastics teammate of Welsh’s, described her friend as a “constant” in her life.

Foster said that Welsh earned All-American honors at UW-Whitewater.

“She was just such a role model in and out of the gym for me,” she said. “She would give me rides to and from school and to and from practice and never asked for anything in return. She was just that kind of person.”

That portrayal was shared by those who knew Welsh best in her community.

“She helped me through my toughest times, and she’s just been there,” Conrad said. “She’s been a good friend.”

As the investigation continues, flags will fly at half-staff on campus Tuesday as students return for classes after the Labor Day holiday.

Gwyneth Paltrow Shines a Light on Family Summer Memories With Ex Chris Martin and Their Kids

Gwyneth paltrow proved her summer was all about family time, sharing a look at the moments spent with ex chris martin and their kids apple and moses on social media..

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin ’s summer was a total paradise.

Indeed, the former couple—who share kids Apple , 20, and Moses , 18—enjoyed plenty of adventures as a family this season, as Gwyneth proved in a recent social media post.

The Goop founder wrote in her Sept. 2 Instagram post , aptly soundtracked to “Real Love Baby” by Father John Misty , “Summer was good to us.”

In the video, Gwyneth included highlights with both her kids, former spouse, and current husband Brad Falchuk . In addition to romantic moments with Brad, the 51-year-old shared a few selfies with her 20-year-old daughter, as well as a snap of her son enjoying an art museum and another photo of him sitting on Chris’ lap.

Summer clearly took the Paltrow-Martin family to cloud nine, as Gwyneth also featured several pictures of the family on a plane ride, including picturesque views of Manhattan’s skyline and a selfie with Moses as they both donned aviation headsets.

And while Gwyneth’s family highlights were particularly sweet, she also highlighted some of her own friend moments—including a selfie with pal Reese Witherspoon .

Since their 2016 divorce, Gwyneth and Chris have proved to have a peaceful coparenting dynamic. And Gwyneth has not been shy about supporting her former husband in his own romances, either. After all, she previously spoke out about how much she adores Chris’ fiancée, Dakota Johnson .

“I love her so much,” Gwyneth wrote in an October Instagram Q&A. “She’s an adorable, wonderful person. We’re actually very good friends.”

Of course, the Shakespeare in Love actress has noted before that her friendly relationship with her ex didn’t come naturally—but the couple have made a conscious effort to remain on good terms for the sake of their two children, citing the impact unfriendly exes have on their children.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gwyneth Paltrow (@gwynethpaltrow)

“Chris and I just said, 'Let's just never do that,’” she explained to People in 2023. “‘Let's try to get through the hard part of this and remember our friendship.’” As she added of Chris, “He's like my family.”
