About Lady Eleanor Holles School

Lady Eleanor Holles School (LEH) is an independent day school for girls aged 7–18 in Hampton, southwest London. It’s one of the oldest girls’ schools in the country, founded in 1710.

The school is ‘a place of curiosity and adventure, where enthusiastic and bright young minds are encouraged to be bold and brave in their thoughts, actions and dreams for the future.’ The school offers over 100 extra-curricular clubs, providing pupils with inspiring co-curricular activities.

Lady Eleanor Holles School has an excellent academic track record. Most results at A level are grade A*–B. At GCSE, most students achieve grades 9–7. A high percentage of pupils go on to their first-choice university destination.

The school is easily accessible from central London. Despite being so close to the capital, it benefits from large areas of green space on its 24-acre site. It offers a huge number of ‘exceptional facilities’ — LEH prides itself on offering ‘boarding school facilities in a day school’. The school also provides its own extensive coach service to families, which it shares with Hampton School.

Lady Eleanor Holles School 11+ entrance exam

All children applying for 11+ entry to Lady Eleanor Holles School sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test. This is an exam created by the Independent Schools Examination Board which is usually taken in the autumn term of Year 6.

The ISEB Common Pre-Test is taken online and consists of multiple choice questions . It is entirely adaptive , which means the questions become more difficult depending on how your child is performing. The questions span four subjects:

Maths: questions are based on the Year 5 national curriculum – although children in Year 6 may find this section challenging. The questions range from arithmetic to multi-step problem solving.

English: questions are split into two sections: reading comprehension, and spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Verbal reasoning: your child will be tested on their ability to reason and solve problems with written information, such as letters, words, symbols and numbers.

Non-verbal reasoning: these questions assess your child’s logic, critical thinking and problem-solving skills using figures and diagrams. They will need to show that they can analyse and manipulate 2D and 3D figures.

The ISEB Common Pre-Test takes around 2 and a half hours to complete. Your child can sit the four subjects together or at separate times. If they are taking all four subjects on the same day, they will be allowed a short break between each section.

In addition to the ISEB, children applying to LEH complete a problem-solving paper. This lasts around one hour and tests linguistic and logic problem-solving. It includes some elements from English and maths.

Children who perform well in the ISEB Common Pre-Test and the problem-solving paper are invited back to the school for an interview with a member of staff in January. The school will also request a report from your child's current school.

Atom’s top tips for applying to Lady Eleanor Holles School

Lady Eleanor Holles School is a selective school, and competition for places can be high. Here are our top tips to help your child prepare for the selection process.

Bitesize learning

It’s important to build a good knowledge base before school entrance exams. Your child should have a good understanding of the content they’ve been taught at school before testing their knowledge with practice tests.

Using a ‘little and often’ approach when learning is key – our brains encode new information more effectively when dealing with smaller ‘chunks’ of information. For children aged 10–11, child psychologists recommend regular study sessions of 20–30 minutes.

With Atom Home , you don’t need to worry about creating a study schedule. When you enter your target schools, you’ll get a bespoke learning plan tailored to your schools’ entrance exams. Know exactly what your child needs to do each week to confidently pass.

Learning plan for Lady Eleanor Holles on Atom Home

Read widely

Entrance exams test children’s ability to analyse and interpret written information. Regular reading is a great way to help your child build these skills.

Encourage them to read books from different genres and by a diverse range of authors. Increasing the variety of your child’s reading will help them understand different styles, tones and purposes. Meanwhile, reading a little every day will help widen their vocabulary, sharpen their analytical thinking, and enhance their imagination.

Looking for reading inspiration? Check out our Key Stage 2 reading list .

Hone curiosity

Selective schools are often looking for children who are interested in learning. You can help by supporting your child’s broader learning, their intellectual curiosity, and their passion for developing an understanding of the world.

Talk to your child about the world we live in and inspire an interest in current affairs with age-appropriate journalism. It’s also a good idea to make sure they’re benefitting from a rich variety of experiences, such as visiting libraries, museums and galleries.

Refine exam technique

When your child feels confident with their knowledge of the exam topics, they’ll be ready to put their knowledge to the test.

Mock tests can help your child develop problem-solving skills and refine exam technique. They’re also a great way to consolidate learning, while highlighting any knowledge gaps they might want to tackle before exam day.

When you set Lady Eleanor Holles School as a target school on Atom Home, your child will get ISEB mock tests as part of their learning plan. Atom’s mock tests mirror the real ISEB – the curriculum, the timings, the controls and even the colours. Know what to expect on exam day.

Celebrate progress

Setting regular, achievable goals and celebrating your child’s progress – no matter how big or small – will help keep their motivation high.

Make sure to encourage a growth mindset. This means celebrating effort, as well as achievement! When your child makes mistakes or struggles to understand a particular topic, help them understand that they’ll improve through practice. Regular praise will help your child improve their resilience when tackling new and challenging topics.

Introduction.

Lady Eleanor Holles School (also known as LEH or LEHS) is an independent day school for girls in Hampton, London. Established in 1710, it features a beautiful 24-acre campus and a high-achieving junior department that centres its ethos on academic excellence. [ 1 ]

In the Junior School, standards are exemplary and girls generally work in advance of their chronological age. Encouraging the cohort to be resilient and reflective in their approach to learning, LEH equips pupils with strong qualifications across a range of disciplines, including science, technology and languages.

The selection of extracurricular activities is impressive. Sport plays an important role in the life of the school, hence girls achieve notable successes at both regional and national level in netball, swimming and gymnastics. Drama and music opportunities are equally popular, developing pupils’ creative abilities and artistic expression as part of the school’s efforts to preserve their originality. [ 2 ] [ 3 ]

Lady Eleanor Holles: Destination Schools at 11+

Most girls progress to the Senior School without the need to take the school’s 11+ exam. However, each girl’s performance and conduct during her time in the Junior Department will be reviewed so that LEH can establish whether or not she’s able to meet the academic standard required in the Senior School.

Accordingly, a girl may be offered a guaranteed place in the Senior Department without the need to take the 11+ test or to be interviewed. Alternatively, if she proves to be an unsuitable candidate for entry to the Senior Department, she will not be offered a guaranteed place and will be asked to sit the 11+ test and attend an interview, just like any other external candidate.

Our practice tests aim to show what sort of questions were included in Lady Eleanor Holles School (LEH) 7+ past papers. The information provided about Lady Eleanor Holles School (LEH) was believed to be correct at the time of publishing. However, please be aware of future changes. We advise you to contact the school directly if you are unsure of anything. School contact details are provided within the post.

Problem solving

Fluffyears · 22/09/2015 20:24

I have an interview this week and have been told it will be competency based (which I've dealt with before) and also problem solving....anyone know what sort of questions these might be so I can practice? Thanks in advance.

Likely to be a "what would you do" scenario? What type of work is it?

Credit control work. I'm assuming they will give me some scenarios and ask me how I would handle them. Have the job spec so will go through it and make bullet points for each bit to make sure I have relevant answers.

"I'm assuming they will give me some scenarios and ask me how I would handle them." If they are half-decent interviewers they won't ask how you would handle them, they will ask you for examples of when you have handled such scenarios previously and how you did it/what the outcome was. Even if they do ask the question in the form of a hypothetical, you should still answer in the form of an example of when you've done it before. Much more credible.

Ah ok thanks it's having to think on the spot that's killing me.

You shouldn't have to think on the spot much, if at all. The questions will be designed to seek evidence that you meet the criteria in the person specification. With that in mind, you should be able to fairly reliably predict what competencies they will expect you to be able to demonstrate previous experience of, and will therefore be able to prepare in advance an example of something you've done which demonstrates that competency. With regard to the problem solving competency, identify a number of problems you have solved in your current job which are likely to be similar to challenges you'd meet in the job you are being interviewed for. That way if they ask you how you would solve x,y,z problem, you can answer with the example you've pre-prepared about how you solved a similar problem successfully in the past.

Thanks I really want this job so I want to come across really knowledgable.

Thought I should update. The exercise was fine it was all stuff I knew anyway. They were really nice and seemed to like me but I won't hear anything until end of this coming week as one of the managers is away on holiday.
